Welcome to Meetings Africa 2020 WHAT BEGAN AS A SMALL GATHERING of role players in the African business tourism market has turned into a premier business event that is attended by notable exhibitors and delegates from Africa and beyond. It’s been 15 years of growth, 15 years of learning and listening in order to get even better. My sincere gratitude goes out to everyone who has put in the hard work of ensuring the phenomenal growth of Meetings Africa. I am equally grateful to all stakeholders; exhibitors and buyers who continue to put Meetings Africa on their annual calendar of events to attend. Without jointly working together, Meetings Africa would not be celebrating 15 years this year. It’s been 15 years of championing a singular message – that Africa’s interests are better advanced when we adopt a common vision, when we speak with one voice. Tourism is a huge booster of economic growth. The number of visitors and exhibitors keeps rising, a sign that we are definitely headed in the right direction. More importantly, the growth in numbers is an indication that African stakeholders are willing

to come together to learn from each other and strike partnerships that are mutually beneficial. Exactly what Meetings Africa is all about. Given the event’s impressive growth over the past 15 years, I’m optimistic that Meetings Africa 2020 will go on to surpass last year’s event, which is our biggest so far. Last year, there were 343 exhibitors – 37 more than in 2018 – and 86 of whom came from fellow African countries: Botswana, Namibia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Africa brims with promise. It’s a wonderful continent of diverse people and vibrant cultures. With many African countries making remarkable economic strides in the past few years, the global meetings industry has come to regard the continent as a dynamic, sought-after destination. Tourism is a crucial sector that can help the continent continue its inexorable march towards its destiny. So, collaboration, rather than competition, is crucial to assist all African countries realise their potential. For this reason, Meetings Africa goes out of its way to showcase Africa’s diverse offering of services and products where African associations and African meetings industry professionals can partner to help transform our continent’s fortunes. It’s all starts with that one fateful encounter at Meetings Africa stall. That exchanging of business cards. That handshake. The rest soon becomes history. MEETINGS AFRICA’s consistent trajectory of excellence as a showcase of Africa’s world-class MICE industry continues in 2020 with a growing focus on the continent’s environment and its people. Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) is proud to partner with this leading industry event for the 16th year, and to welcome all participants to a successful Meetings Africa 2020. Meetings Africa is once again ensuring a responsible approach to the event, reflecting the importance of local economic development and staying abreast of international trends, and the Green Stand Awards will again recognise exhibitors who the extra ‘green’ mile. Sandton Convention Centre is maintaining a strong focus on environmental sustainability at every level in order to reduce the venue’s carbon footprint, and as part of the Tsogo Sun Hotels, we adhere strictly to our environmental policy and integrate best practices into our core business strategy. Our policy ensures compliance with legal requirements; prevention of pollution; waste 6 Exhibition Catalogue 2020

management; conservation of natural resources; encouraging of co-operation from suppliers, contractors and visitors; and implementation of an environmental system that trains staff members, manages risks and impact, sets objectives and plans, and measures and monitors for ongoing improvement. Waste management starts on site with a fully manned waste area, separating waste into recyclable and non-recyclable material, with a specialist outsourced company collecting the waste. Electricity and water usage is managed to ensure reduced consumption throughout the building, and discarded furniture and furnishings items are donated to ensure re-use. Bottled water for conferences and visitors is being provided in glass. In the kitchen, various practices are implemented that include sustainability-focused purchasing and menu development, biodegradable packaging, reducing wastage, avoiding over-catering, oil management, Bokashi system, power and water-saving measures throughout the kitchens, and more.

ABOUT SANDTON CONVENTION CENTRE Johannesburg’s beautiful Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) is ideally located in the heart of Johannesburg’s vibrant business and commercial hub with direct access via skywalks to upmarket malls, restaurants, bars and hotels. The multipurpose world-class venue has 22 000 m2 of flexible event space comprising two exhibition halls and 15 venues of varying sizes, and a highly professional team that is always on hand to assist with client needs. SCC hosts more than 600 events annually, including large-scale banquets for up to 2 200 guests in the luxurious Ballroom, 4 500 cocktail guests in the Pavilion,

from 10 to 250 people in a range of smaller meeting rooms, and a total of over 10 000 people can be accommodated in the centre per day, with more than 500 000 exhibitors, visitors, delegates, businesspeople and staff passing through its doors annually. SCC’s renowned food and beverage services offer a wide range of new menu options in line with global consumer food trends, and cater for any occasion, event and dietary preferences, consistently ensuring that modern and healthier food options are available. The refreshed range of creative menu options guides customers in their choices, while also offering flexibility.

These initiatives are ensuing that our collective mindset is increasingly aware of the need to be on the lookout for better ways to reduce our footprint. Reflecting on last year, Sandton Convention Centre had a successful year, with several signature events returning as well as new international and local events on the calendar. For consumers, the Arnold Sport Festival took place in May for the fourth consecutive year, featuring close on 100 sporting codes with 20 000 participating athletes, more than 70 000 visitors and spectators, and a trade expo with 300 exhibitors. The third Design Joburg, recognised as Gauteng’s premier contemporary and decorative design show, highlighted Africa’s rich combination of both traditional and modern styling that dynamically impacts global design culture. Others included the Unlimited Wealth 20/20 Summit in June and the Wealth Master Tour in September, the highly acclaimed Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival, also in September, as well as RMB WineX, South Africa’s largest wine tasting under one roof in October and Whisky & Spirits Live, featuring a wide selection of whisky and other premium spirits in November. A key government event was the Presidential Investment Summit in November, which attracted more than 2 000 delegates from South Africa and around the world to discuss investment opportunities in the country. Sandton Convention Centre was also the proud national five-star winner in the Conference and Exhibition Venue category of the prestigious 2019 Lilizela Tourism Awards hosted by SA Tourism
