W
elcome to Ealing Business Expo 2020 – 12 hours over two days to promote and support the local business community in Ealing and Expo director, West London. Carlene Bender We’ve been through a few The Contactus changes of date and format for Network Expo 2020, but here we are at last, 100% online and learning as we go. I’d love to know how you’re using this event – are you just attending the talks, and/or are you here to network, or promote what you do? Email and let me know your feedback and your ideas: info@contactusealing.co.uk
#EalingBizExpo
We’d love to hear about your experiences at the Ealing Business Expo! Include the hashtag #EalingBizExpo in your social media posts (highfives for posts with photos/ videos) so we can join in the conversation with you.
Visitor etiquette
Remember that exhibitors have paid to promote their businesses at the Expo. Visitors may use the speed networking sessions to share their own offers. Some of the sessions have been sponsored, so please expect to hear a short pitch from the people who have helped us to put on this event

How to attend Ealing Business Expo Online 2020
H
ave a look through this gentle guide to ensure you make the most of the time you spend with us at Expo 2020. 1. Where to start The Expo has been set up at ealingbizexpo.co.uk – click through to the special ‘Expo Day’ page to find the list of sessions, alongside the online stands. As we go through the schedule, talks and sessions that have ended will be shaded out and the current part of the event will be highlighted so you know exactly where to click/tap to join in. Most of the sessions will take place on Zoom, and some on Facebook. If for some reason you can’t access the Expo website, the pinned post on our Facebook page @ealingbizexpo will also be regularly updated. The meeting links and passwords will also be sent by email the day before the start of the event. As long as you have registered for the event (via
Eventbrite), you will receive this email. It might be in your spam folder, though. 2. Speed networking There are five (5!) online speed networking sessions of 20 minutes each – but don’t feel pressured to attend all of them. This style of networking is new to most people, but it’s not difficult – just join the session, and after the short welcome, you will automatically be placed in a breakout room to meet a new (or not so new) contact. After one minute you’ll be switched to another room to meet and speak with a different person, and so on until the 20 minutes are up. More tips for online speed networking on page 11. 3. When to engage Some of the sessions will be open Zoom calls, and some are webinars. You are welcome to use the Chat feature to ask questions, comment on what’s going on (please be generous
with your positivity), or reply to someone else’s comment. During the social media breaks, please do post something about the event. Don’t forget to stop by the online stands to connect with local companies that you might like to do business with. Some of the exhibitors will be live at the other end of a Zoom link, others will be available by appointment. 4. In case of trouble It’s unlikely that we will get through 12 hours of an online Expo without any glitches. If there is a problem at our end, we will update Twitter first. If there’s a problem at your end that we can help with, send a DM or quick email to info@ contactusealing.co.uk For information about the speakers, see pages 7 & 9, and about the exhibitors, pages 13-15. Remember to flip over and read the ‘Contactus Ealing’ side of the magazine too!

About our speakers
Who’s who in our event line-up
T
he talks and presentations in this year’s Expo were designed to draw a response from the audience – and the best bit is that you can have your say (i.e. in the Chat feature on Zoom) without having to wait for your turn to speak. So make a note of the sessions you’d like to attend, and be ready to join in when we’re live on the day. MONDAY 12:00-12:20 “Tips for promoting your business in Ealing in 2020” with Carlene Bender, Contactus (Ealing Business Expo) Our event’s opening talk will be expanding some more on the article on the ‘Contactus Ealing’ side of this magazine (see pages 5-7), headlined “40 ways to promote your business in Ealing in 2020”. Pick a number between 1 and 40 and get ready to call it out. MONDAY 12:30-12:50 “Are you really working online” with Alex Pemberton, Tecric Hosting The Tecric founder (who is also founder of Socios Media and Launch Seven – see Q&A on page 4 of ‘Contactus Ealing’ at the other end of this magazine), challenges the ways that we have been working since lockdown started in the middle of March 2020.
MONDAY 13:00-13:20 “Lockdown doesn’t mean you have to stop hiring: How to attract, retain and engage new talent to your business” with Cassandra Hamilton, Edworkation As featured in the Evening Standard (opening lines: “A former HR manager has set up a business to help young people navigate the challenges of the workplace” – read it on the Edworkation.co.uk website), this speaker brings much more than advice about recruitment. What are your plans for hiring staff? MONDAY 14:30-14:50 “Build Your Brand; Build Your Business – How the ‘Do, Say, See’ Model Works” with Sapna Pieroux, InnerVisions ID Watching this multiple-award winning designer, best-selling author, and successful entrepreneur talk about business branding is a lesson in learning to open your eyes and understand what it really means to be “visible”. MONDAY 15:00-15:20 “Is Your Business Prepared for the Impact of Leaving the EU?” with Alan Rides, West London Local Chambers While the whole
world worries mostly about covid-19, some are keeping watch over the post-Brexit scenario and how damaging it is to international trade. Managing director of Hounslow Chamber of Commerce, and the new West London Local Chambers, is here to explain how your business can be affected. MONDAY 15:30-15:50 “Contactus Q&A: surprise guest maybe?” with Carlene Bender, Contactus (Ealing Business Expo) TUESDAY 12:00-12:45 Round Table Discussion: “Can businesses ever truly recover from covid-19?” chaired by Yuri Bender, Professional Wealth Magazine, Financial Times The discussion will focus on what it takes to build back a business after lockdown: where are the ideas and innovation going to come from? which data should we trust? how is recovery going to be different for big companies vs smaller businesses? Panellists to include: Dr Rupa Huq, Member of Parliament for Ealing Central and Acton; Sean Dhadialla, business strategy advisor; Michael Lassman, London regional chair, FSB (Federation of Small Businesses); and April Rudin, founder, The Rudin Group. TUESDAY 13:00-13:20 “Social media for people who don’t have time for social media” with Carlene Bender,

Thank you to all the businesses who completed our most recent survey back in May 2020, assessing the immediate impact of the coronavirus on Ealing’s businesses. Your views really helped us to lobby Government and shaped how some of the grants were awarded. We would also like to offer our sincerest gratitude to our local businesses who provided goods , staff resources and services in particular much needed food, sanitisers and PPE equipment in the aftermath of the pandemic; helping to support our most vulnerable residents. Please look out for our follow up survey due out in the coming weeks, we would welcome your time in completing the survey to capture how you are dealing with the latest challenges and restrictions.

Hello, Danny Kilgannon here from DK Locksmiths in Greenford, hoping everyone attending Ealing Business Expo 2020 has a good event and makes some useful new connections. See you at the speed networking!
Tips for speed networking face-to-face but online
Below: Screengrab from our Zoom call during Ealing Cybrexpo on the original dates of Expo 2020 in March
I
f you’ve never been speed networking online on Zoom, and you’re wondering how it all works, here are some suggestions that might come in handy before you join in any (or all?) of our five (5!) speed networking sessions over the two days of Expo 2020. 1. Practise Until you do it, you don’t actually know what it’s like. If you manage to read this article before the Expo, you can join in our Club Contactus meetups on Zoom on 5 and 12 October, 11am to 12noon. They are both free to attend. Search on Eventbrite to find the booking link. 2. Rename yourself Hover over your onscreen image to bring up the three
dots, and change your name to include the name of your company. For example “Carlene EalingBizExpo”. 3. Watch the time Remember to share the time allotted so that the other person gets a chance to speak. Use the time for a conversation rather than rattling off your one-minute pitch so you really connect.
4. Take notes When you meet so many people in a short space of time, it’s hard to keep track of everyone. Write down their names and businesses. 5. If you get stuck Have some questions prepared e.g. “how did you find out about this event”? If all else fails there’s always the weather.
We love ampersands. We obsess about colours. And we love nothing more than the smell of a newly printed piece. But above all, we are passionate about creating great, problem-solving design. We would love to find out what makes you tick!

Special thank you messages Without the support and investment from exhibitors, sponsors, advertisers and speakers, there would be no Ealing Business Expo. Special mentions to Ealing Council, A2Dominion Group, and Tecric Hosting for headline sponsoring, and to support-sponsors LED Factory, SmartPA and Holmqvist Design – your cash and time investment helped to cover costs for marketing, website upgrading, software subscriptions, magazine and flyer printing, our Ugenie app, sales support, admin help, and various pre-Expo meeting room hire. To all the exhibitors who stuck by this event through every change of date and format: thank you so much for believing in what this event stands for. Proud to extend your stands to 2021. And, thanks to all our visitors for signing up, and then actually clicking through and attending, sharing, and making all the effort worthwhile. Thanks to my folks too: Y, V and V. As they say, the money is in the follow-up. Because while you’re networking, you’re not selling. You’re just talking. If there is going to be a sales process you can usually tell during the conversation. If there is going to be a sales process, it starts after the networking is finished. And remember, getting the other person to talk is still the most important thing. Do you remember the story of a networking experiment where
a businessman was asked to sit next to another man on a plane, but not divulge anything about himself? Everytime the airplane passenger asked the businessman something about himself, the businessman would swiftly redirect the conversation back to the passenger. When interviewed about his flight afterwards, the passenger said it was the best flight ever, the eight hours passed in a flash, etc. They may not remember the words that were said, but they’ll remember the way you made them feel. Keep aiming for the good feeling.

e don’t know yet if in-person live events will be back in time for Expo 2021, but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be planning the biggest business event in the borough of Ealing to take place on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 March. The last time there was a ‘Contactus Ealing’ magazine was Issue No.20 back in Nov-Dec 2016. A painting of the Ealing cinema building site was on the cover, which is interesting because the hoardings from the site have only just come down as we were going to press (see pics above left). But it is coronavirus we have to thank (if ‘thank’ is the right word) for bringing us back here, with the renewed interest in offline marketing like magazines and advertising among local business owners. Happy clicking through this issue and be sure to connect with your favourite biz. Don’t feel shy once you get to the end of ‘Contactus Ealing’, to flip over and read ‘Expo Guide’. Thanks for ‘shopping by’. You’ve been involved with Ealing Business Expo since 2016, when you first exhibited at the Acton Business Expo, and then as an exhibitor and speaker in 2017, and in 2020 as a headline sponsor (see advert on page 22) and speaker. From what you’ve seen, how has the B2B business landscape changed in Ealing? A: I really like the community aspect that the Expo has created and has played a part of in and around Ealing. I have recognised a lot more collaboration in Ealing over the years, with Ealing entrepreneurs and business owners coming together to network frequently.

And lastly, what are your top two tips for making a website work in 2020? A: 1. Consider who the website is for (your target customers) and what you want them to do upon visiting your website. 2. Keep it secure: Get SSL certificates, make sure passwords are strong and have frequent website backups.

40 1. Go business networking. With Zoom, Teams, Skype, Remo and all the rest, there’s been no shortage of opportunities to get networking online. The great majority of business-owners see networking as their most effective marketing tool. Most of us prefer meeting up face-to-face of course, but until government regulations allow, and until people feel more comfortable about crowds gathering in-person, we have to make the most of online. Options for business networking include membership groups, pay-as-you-go networking, and free meetups. Find out about the Contactus Ealing Business Diary at tinyurl. com/EalingBusinessDiary – the Diary is published monthly with links and contact details for several Ealing-based meetups.

2. Tap into Google’s power. Get reviews, get on Google Places, and show off your location as Ealing, West London. Set up your free business listing at business.google.com which highlights your business details in the search results sidebar whenever someone searches for you online. This is a great way to make your business stand out further, and will work to boost you up the Google rankings. Also explore the rest of Google’s business offers, including Google Adwords, Google Analytics and Google Adsense to see how they would direct nearby customers to your business. 3. If you are still saving up for a website (or a website update), you can get away with using your Facebook page in the meantime. Remember to pick ‘Ealing, London’ when saying where your business is located.
There are several dedicated business groups, first and foremost being the ‘Businesses in Ealing – Contactus’ group (over 1700 members), and its baby sister group ‘Businesses in Acton W3 – Contactus’ (over 294 members).

11. Ask fans and followers to turn on notifications for your account. You have to be really confident about your content to ask for this one.
