Q&A As co-founder of the OPEN Ealing arts centre in West Ealing, Mandie Wilde’s aim is “to introduce a refreshing cultural space and exciting arts programmes to the community”. In our Q&A she explains how she is going about doing that.

ow on earth do you manage to maintain such a packed schedule at OPEN Ealing? > We have a fabulous team of volunteers helping us deliver the workshops, especially the ones for young people. Our small core team goes ‘above and beyond’.

The packed schedule comes from the fact that when we first started OPEN, one of our team used to continually remind us that we were talking about Arts with an S, to ensure we covered all artistic forms and mediums – it is something we shall never forget!

Even though it is busy and can be hard work, we all work towards making the courses and performances sustainable in their own right so OPEN can continue to expand. I believe

We’re both on the steering committee for the West Ealing coworking hub (see p14-15) that will get going in the autumn and I love some of the ideas you’ve suggested for how the hub can be used. Would you outline some of the ideas here? > We share a similar view that the co-working hub should be inclusive. I love the fact that the space is large enough to allow studios, desk space, rehearsal and performance space.

Entrepreneurs just starting out or those changing career

can find a space there and there are some good breakout spaces where you can huddle and brainstorm /network.

What do you like most about West Ealing then? > I love the raw natural talent that you come across, diversity and the number of opportunities there are to celebrate them.

THE AVENUE W13 The garden of The Drayton Court hotel had gone to the dogs by the time we arrived for Top Dogs on Saturday. The show was an extension of the monthly The Avenue Vintage and Antique Market (In West Ealing). With categories like “Pugalicious” and “Look-a-likey”, it was hard to resist getting drawn in – thanks to emcee Tom Harris.

TOP DOGS (continued) Below: “Best in Show” winner Benjecky, with trainer Ilonka, is a TheraPaws pet therapy dog with The Mayhew Animal Home.

Benjecky is a working dog, explains Ilonka: “He meets sick people and old people, and makes them feel better. We work at hospitals, and everywhere we go, we leave people smiling and happy. Patients with dementia especially love him.”

Ilonka, a volunteer at the Mayhew, entered the Top Dogs show with Benjecky to raise awareness about the NW10-based charity. An ex-banker herself, she is based in Greenford and takes Benjecky for walks in Pitshanger Park not too far away. @themayhew

For love of vintage THE AVENUE W13 On the last Saturday of every month, between 9am and 5pm, the white gazebos which have appeared along the pavements of The Avenue in West Ealing get filled up with people looking for antiques and rare objects at a bargain price – picture frames, furniture, clothing, bottles, lamps, etc. The Avenue Vintage and Antique Market is organised and supported by In West Ealing (West Ealing Business Improvement District).

Lorna’s specialist cards THE AVENUE W13 For the cricket memorabilia collector, or the original puppets-with-strings Thunderbirds fans, or for maps, or all sorts of old-time handmade cards and mounted pictures, stop at Lorna Kyle’s stand at The Avenue Vintage and Antique Market in West Ealing on the last Saturday of every month.

“What’s good about this market,” says Lorna, “is that people see me here, they see what I do, and they know they can find my cards at the All Original shop on The Green in Ealing Broadway.

“Quite often, customers come back another time to ask if I have a favourite cricketer or footballer picture to create a specialised card or framed print for them,” she adds.

Being based in West Ealing means she’s a regular at the market. “I’ve been here almost since the first day.” @lornakylecards

Play Cricketforfun South Ealing based cricket club Old Actonians Ladies were thrilled when TV presenter, author and sportswoman Clare Balding stopped by to have a go with the cricket bat while her wife Alice Arnold gamely offered to keep wicket.

Clare had just formally opened the Super Saturday of Sport event in Turnham Green, Chiswick, on 16 July.

Cricketforfun season is on SOUTH EALING Below: Getting the batting underway at this year’s Cricketforfun in Ealing season restart last Friday were Lynsey and Ali, at the Old Actonians cricket ground in Gunnersbury, W5.

Cricketforfun is a Contactus concept, unique to Ealing, which aims to give ordinary people a chance to have a go at cricket. Local businesspeople especially are encouraged to come along and make the most of the break from their computers and mobiles.

West Ealing Hub update THE BROADWAY W13 Discussion, brainstorming and visualising for the new West Ealing coworking space continued last Wednesday at the site of the hub at St James’ House in West Ealing (upstairs the Farah beauty salon).

Local businesses and interested parties were invited by the Ealing Council Regeneration department to contribute ideas and to take part in a hub envisioning workshop led by Oliver Marlow of Tilt.

Accordng to Oliver: “It felt from the workshop that this would become a destination place; people would actively be coming here.”

The plan is for a schedule of activities and events to begin in autumn, developing alongside the refurbishment of the space, and leading to a full opening of the hub in spring. @EalingBlueprint

At the Acton Business Meetup HIGH STREET W3 It was a summer-style meeting last Monday at the Contactus magazines’ monthly Acton Business Meetup, as we gathered in the garden of The Coffee House on High Street in Acton.

After the festivals...

WALPOLE PARK W5 The big tent is gone, the Main Stage and South Stage packed away for another year, and Walpole Park in Ealing Broadway has returned to its usual weekend duties – father and son ball games, picnics and coffees by the bandstand.

After a month of Ealing Summer Festivals throughout July, with thousands of visitors tramping through the site, all that is left to the naked eye is a bit of flattened grass.

Congratulations to the Ealing Council organisers, and to the performers who put on a wonderful show, from the Beer Festival to the Bues Festival, and then wrapping up with the Jazz Festival last weekend. Here’s to summer 2017! @Ealing_Summer
