Seaside fun: Costa del Ealing EALING GREEN W5 > Whether you’ve already been on your summer break, and were hankering after the chorus of seagulls and breaking waves, or you actually haven’t been anywhere at all (there are still some of us like that in Ealing), the Ealing Council sponsored Pop-Up Beach on Ealing Green last Friday and Saturday brought a welcome excuse to sit in the sun in deck chairs and eat ice cream while building sandcastles. Timed perfectly with a mini-heatwave of late-20s sunshine, the “giant sandpit” as one young visitor called it, also came with a seaside-strength loudspeaker pouring out the sounds of wind and waves just like if we were down at Brighton. The only thing missing, sadly, was just a bit of water. Pop-Up Paddling Pools next year maybe?

A day for Hanwell community HANWELL COMMUNITY CENTRE W7 > The annual Hanwell Community Centre Fun Day took place on Saturday at Westcott Crescent, with the usual stalls, tours, live music, displays and West Indian barbecues. Visitors were invited to try out a new sport or activity – there are over 30 activities listed on the centre’s weekly timetable – and see how the facilities have been improving over recent years.

Rakesh on duty in Hanwell HANWELL COMMUNITY CENTRE W7 > Rakesh Karia has been duty manager at the Hanwell Community Centre for the past three years, and seen the Grade II listed building, built in 1865 as a Poor Law School, go from the threat of being turned into flats, to one even more embraced by the community, and now run directly by Ealing Council. The Fun Day is part of that outreach into the community, explains Rakesh. “Ninety-five per cent of the people who come here, and who live close by, and who use the facility, are happy with what we’re doing,” he says. “At the end of the day, this is a community facility, and the Fun Day is a way for Hanwell people to find out more about what’s going on at the Centre, and is also an opportunity for local businesses to advertise and promote themselves.” Look out for the cafe opening in September, he adds. hanwellcc

Football season ahoy DRAYTON BRIDGE PARK W7 > Time, once again, for parents standing on the sidelines, shouting coaching tips to their onfield offspring and trying hard not to challenge the referee – just like during this weekend’s Pitshanger FC under-13s friendly against Wembley. Coach Mo Soudy has a bright crop of youngsters, and I’m not just talking about their orange-coloured kit...

Supporting the indie EALING COMMON W5 > Shop local supporters were horrified to see another big coffee chain store open on the Ealing Common parade of shops, just across the road from beloved Mugi cafe. The cafe, which specialises in home-cooked East European dishes, alongside the usual cafe fare, is bracing itself for competition from the giants. Below: Sanja, from Croatia, has been working at the cafe for two years. “It’s still summer holiday season,” she says. “But soon we’ll see what effect the new cafe has on our business.” Bottom: Mugi signage everywhere (the cafe is named after owner Zelko Mugosa) Bottom right: soup with salted pork
