Rory Thomas Butler

Q&A West Ealing based book lover Rory Thomas Butler is training to be a writer and journalist. He manages to turn this week’s Q&A into a neat sample of his writing...

I

“I had to be close to language in some way, and the call to absorb into my identity this strange alchemy stayed throughout my life like a song.”

The Ealinger

Q&A

began writing at an early age, perhaps nine. I recall the sensation felt as a young boy, perched at my father’s computer with a kind of guileless determination, my little fingers poised above the keys, baiting me in their patient silence for that first line. I had not yet begun reading seriously, and sought to emulate no-one. I knew nothing of Tolstoy or Shakespeare even, and syntax, for all I cared, was a fantastical creature from a fairy tale, like the Jabberwock, only less thorny and terrible perhaps. I was not particularly good (and perhaps a proof of that still remains to be seen), however, it mattered very little to me. I had to be close to language in some way, and the call to absorb into my identity this strange alchemy stayed throughout my life like a song.

A

At times I was complacent, neglectful, yet its loyalty to me remained constant, faithful, enduring. At fourteen I read Crime & Punishment and The Border Trilogy, and it was this, like some seismic shockwave through my being, that awoke in me a deeper love affair with literature commanding my entire spirit like one hopelessly wed to alcohol.

Today I still write, essays and articles mostly, and I work for Waterstones as a book seller whilst studying Journalism at the London School of Journalism. rorythomas.london@gmail.com @rorythomasb – interview by Carlene Bender

Fun on the bus EALING BROADWAY W5 > The Rolling Base bus pulled up to the Ealing Town Hall forecourt last Wednesday as the final activity lined up in the Ealing Council Regeneration sponsored summer timetable of free events for children and their adults. Last week’s Pop-Up Beach on Ealing Green was also part of the timetable. The Bus held four sessions across the borough.

ROLLING BASE (continued) Below: The_Ealinger chatted with Tracey-Lee of the Barnet-based Rolling Base mobile children’s activity centre “We’ve had a really good response here,” said Tracey-Lee, who was supervising the day’s activities as proect manager Jennie Saunders was away. “Although the activities are for children, quite a few adults stopped to take part.” “We’re supported by the John Lyon’s children’s charity, and would love to come back again to Ealing,” she added.

THE AVENUE W13 > Dick Esmond, co-founder of the Ealing Jazz Festival 30 years ago, staged his own Jazz in the Garden event at the Drayton Court hotel on Sunday. Held in response to Ealing Council cuts earlier this year which saw him removed as the organiser of the local summer festival, this event was billed as “live jazz – back to the roots” – a welcome addition to the local live music calendar.

Delights of Brentham BRENTHAM ESTATE W5 > There is a road off the north side of Pitshanger Lane – Denison Road – that has won its fair share of neighbourhood garden show awards for its delightful flower-filled front gardens. So much so that the green-fingered gardeners must have decided to extend their talents to beautify the patches of soil around the trees spaced along this stretch of pavement. As we head into a mini-heatwave this week in London, we revel in signs of a summer to remember, and thank the gardeners of the Brentham estate for creating this patch for us to enjoy every summer.

Cricket in South Ealing

For more information see the Eventbrite page, or our Facebook group.

GUNNERSBURY DRIVE W5 > It started off as a wet and rainy Friday but Cricketforfun braved the weather and we had a wonderful session, with the standard of play boosted by regular Old Actonians CC members. Below: this week’s attendees. Below right: Game sponsor Isabelle MorleyFletcher of Isabelle Scott design and build drops by.

No previous experience of cricket is necessary. Attendance is free as costs of the game have been covered by our sponsors.

What happens at a Cricketforfun in Ealing game - 12.45pm meet and warm-up; players assigned into batting pairs - 1pm quick introductions - 1.05pm game starts - each batting pair faces two overs (6 balls each). If a batter gets out (bowled, caught or run out only), batters exchange ends so the other person gets to bat. There is no scoring, and no ‘winner’. - 1.50pm game ends - 1.50pm-2pm warm down, drinks and teas - 2pm-2.30pm stay on for relaxed networking
