t feels like the calm before the storm at the moment.

So what is going to happen today, then? > It’s going to be complete chaos! There’s a lot of shouting involved. You see, what some people like to do when they’re volunteering is that they see someone across the other side of the road that they’d really love to give water to, so they creep across the road, and they get in the way of the runners. We’re always shouting “foot on the yellow lines”, and I end up quite hoarse by the end of it.

miles in. And then it’s the mass clearup afterwards. So we clear up all the way down to the end of Pitshanger Lane.

How many volunteers have you got today? > We’ve got a good bunch – I think about 25, 30 people, and then we’ve got the Scouts who are helping us out this year, which is fantastic.

I’ve been doing this now, hmm, this is my third year.

Have you ever run the Ealing Half Marathon, or would you run it yourself? > No, I’m not a runner. I like cycling, but I don’t think I’d get to running it myself.

This is all part of the great Pitshanger welcome, with Pitshanger Lane being Great British High Street and all... > Plus the church is 100 years old this year, so it’s a big year for us. It’s a very community-spirited church, so it’s great to be able to do this, and great to be invited to do this each year.

Does this volunteering activity tie in with your day job at all? > No, I’m a psychologist, so – nothing to do with my day job at all! And just good fun.

Would you do it again next year? > Every year we say this is the last time, and next year we’ll sit outside a cafe on Pitshanger Lane to watch the race go by.

Fifth Ealing Half Marathon PITSHANGER LANE W5 > Since 2012, the Ealing Half Marathon has been starting and finishing in Lammas Park W5, through a course of 13.1miles skirting the centre of the borough via W5, W13 and W7.

With over 30,000 people cheering on the runners (this year roughly 7000 of them), supported by a good 700 or so volunteers, this multiple award-winning is easily the biggest single event of the year in Ealing.

The_Ealinger decided to check out the St Barnabas water stop, the second of five church stops along the race route, at the four-mile point, to see how the people of Pitshanger welcomed the runners.

Bottom: Josphat Kemei sneaks the tiniest of smiles as he leads the race through Pitshanger. Josphat would go on to win in a time of 1:04:14, a good eight minutes ahead of the second-place finisher.

HALF MARATHON (continued) Below: And after the race, the clear-up along Pitshanger Lane – volunteers (St Barnabas parishioners, local residents, Scouts) empty the remains of the plastic water bottles and collect them for recycling.

Surprising that it could all be over so quickly – the volunteers gathered around 7.30am, then the race started at 9am, and had passed through and it was all over and the road reopened and everything back to normal by 11am.

Congratulations to all who ran the Ealing Half Marathon on Sunday; kudos to the volunteers, unofficial helpers, cheering neighbours and general happy people who came out in support.

Next year: Sunday 24 September.

Xtreme it was...

EALING GREEN W5 > With the skate ramp deemed sufficiently gnarly (?) for the teenagers and young men to get up on it and not come down until home time, it was left to the rest of the park to provide entertainment and a bit of learning and practice for the younger visitors, most of whom turned up to Sports Xtreme Ealing with their wheels already attached.

Exceptions to the wheeled brigade were the climbing wall, with its very patient queue, and some of the local keep-fit businesses such as Tribeca Studios and Fit 4 Less gyms.

Another top event from Make it Ealing (the Ealing Broadway Business Improvement District) over two days of a super sporty weekend in Ealing.

Broncos end season in style VALLIS WAY W13 > Featherstone Rovers waited until the last five minutes of the game to score their first try, but Sunday’s game was all the way a London Broncos of Ealing affair. Final score 46-6, to bring a stunning season and an awesome Super 8s series to a close. Broncos will not gain promotion to the Super League after, all so it’s another year at the rugby league Championship level. @LondonBroncosRL

EALING BROADWAY SHOPPING CENTRE W5 > The_Ealinger stopped to chat with Angeer, Martha and Melanie to find out what this new university on Ealing Green was like.

“Arden University has been going a long time,” explained Melanie, “but this is the first year we are actually having classes in a classroom.”

“Even so, most courses you only have to come in twice a week – most of the course material is online, so if you miss a class you can catch up,” she continued. “It’s really good for mature students, or students who have to work at the same time as study. Foundation courses are also available, in case you don’t have the right entry qualifications.”

So what’s the green apple all about? “That’s for you to take a selfie with; you could win a Kindle Fire.”

Wira of Warsaw: a closer look EALING CENTRAL LIBRARY W5 > Acton-based author George Szlachetko, along with wife Jacqui and daughter Emma, took part in a presentation and Q&A last Thursday based around his first book, ‘Wira of Warsaw’, which tells the story of George’s mother, Wira, who joined the Polish underground army during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. She eventually came to live in Ealing as a political refugee.
