William Hardman

Q&A Hanwell-based architect William Hardman carries on the tradition of great building design in Ealing. In our Q&A, he explains his influences...

A

mazing architecture and Ealing go together like Sir John Soane and Pitzhanger Manor – how does Ealing’s history influence what you design? > Context is really important. There are 29 Conservation Areas in Ealing and these should be preserved and new buildings in them designed sympathetically to enhance the surroundings. I share the concerns of many Ealing residents that the current scheme for the centre of Ealing threatens the Town Centre Conservation Area.

“The best way to protect historic buildings is have them used and occupied, rather than vacant”

Q&A

On an ordinary day I’m guessing you get your fair share of conservatories and loft extensions. How do you balance those with more creative projects? > Inevitably there has to be a balance, and all architects have had to turn down some domestic projects from time

to time due to commitments to different types of work. However, because of the relatively lengthy time periods involved in Town Planning and construction, it is usually possible to happily combine several projects concurrently. I remember during #EalingHour on Twitter, you shared your concerns about the new Gunnersbury Park designs. What do you think

about the most recent developments there? > English Heritage named Gunnersbury Park as one of the top 12 ‘at risk’ properties in England. There are 22 historic listed buildings in the park and they have unfortunately been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that major repair works are now necessary. I think everybody welcomes the current refurbishment work, but the best way to protect historic buildings is have them used

and occupied, rather than vacant. I believe that instead of constructing various new buildings in the park (like the café) historic buildings like The Stables should be reused, or they will soon deteriorate again. The Stables, designed by Sidney Smirke who received the RIBA Gold medal in 1860, could have provided a great venue for the café/restaurant and also provide a home for the collection of historic carriages that were kept in the mansion. williamhardman.com @1WilliamHardman – interview by Carlene Bender

Pooja at the Ealing Town Hall

NEW BROADWAY W5 > Thousands of worshippers were expected to visit the London Sharad Utsav over the weekend, from Friday to Monday, to partake in prayers and offerings to the Hindu goddess of motherhood, Durga. Sharad Utsav means “autumn festival”, and refers to the local Bengali community’s main event, Durga Pooja which is celebrated every year at the Ealing Town Hall, with traditional ceremonies, cultural performances, food, and prayer. Visitors attend from all over London, the UK and abroad. Besides the Durga Pooja, LSU organises various cultural and community events throughout the year including art exhibitions, a cricket League, and the Harrow Music Festival. londonsu.org @londonsu1 londonsharadutsav

Dr Huq addressed the gathering in Bengali and translated it into English, saying: “I’m especially honoured to be here, as one of only three Bengali MPs in the House of Commons. The Bengali language has given us so much – martyrs laid down their lives for us to speak the language. “Goddess Durga is a symbol of woman power in today’s world,” she added.

‘Polish Ealing’: a history EALING BROADWAY W5 > Local historian Dr Piotr Stolarski met with The_Ealinger contributor Joanna Dudzinska and told her a bit about his life, and his book, ‘Polish Ealing’. Born in Gdansk, Poland, in 1980, Piotr has lived in Acton since 1983 and currently works at the Ealing Local History Centre at the Ealing Central Library. “Ealing has the largest Polish community in Europe outside Poland, with about 30,000 Poles out of a total population of 350,000,” says Piotr. “My latest book is a history of Ealing’s Polish community, from World War Two to 2015. “This is the first book in English to cover the community in any depth or detail.” The book is self-published via Tignarius Publications, price £10. Email for availability: tignarius@yahoo.co.uk, or visit Piotr (below) at the Ealing Local History Centre.
