Q&A

o how does an English teacher end up on stage?

What happened: did you fall in love with a text and wanted to see it come to life? > Actually I’ve got my mum to thank for that. She was always very musical and dramatic (I mean that in a good way if you’re reading this, mum).

When I was 16 she invited me along to a Gloc rehearsal. After that I was hooked by the great people as well as the chance to perform. The link to English is a complete coincidence but there’s no denying the two go hand in hand very well. That said, I’m pretty sure my students think I’m a bit odd when I start practising my tapping in the playground.

passionate people, Victoria Jones and Matt Pimm. Vicky’s actually a teacher too. Musical theatre seems to attract us for some reason. You’ll recognise big hits from classics like Top Gun as well as more modern films like Austin Powers and Jersey Boys. Sadly, I’m not making an appearance on stage this time round but I will be enjoying the show from the wings as stage manager. I can’t wait to get back on stage with Gloc for ‘Urinetown’ next summer.

You have a different show, a play rather than a musical, coming up at Questors, don’t you? > That’s right. I’ve been lucky enough to be cast in Theatre West 4’s production of The Merchant of Venice.

It’s one of the most controversial of Shakespeare’s plays. It got a horrible reputation due to the use of it by the Nazis during the 1930s and 40s.

However, looking at it through a modern lens a very different picture emerges. It’s running 22-27 November at the Questors Studio.

Some readers of The_Ealinger will recognise you from our Cricketforfun sessions. You also play rugby, squash, and what else – bowls! When?! > It does sound like a busy schedule, I know, but I’m not sure I could go without any of them. I love teaching, and the rest provide a nice change from that to stop me burning out. A tour of West Ealing

BROADWAY W13 > Weeks of research and preparation by tour director Joanna Dudzinska meant that her twohour Saturday Walk around West Ealing was packed with interesting and lesser-known details about the area. This brought great entertainment to the English first-language members of the group, and lots of practice for the group members still learning the language.

The tour started at the West Ealing Workspace building on St James’s Avenue, carried east and then crossed over through the Green Man Estate into Drayton Green, up into The Avenue, and then back down to Dean Gardens and the Leeland Road Farmers Market before ending at the wall sculpture on the Sainsbury’s building.

EALING TOWN HALL W5 > The Women Matter event last Tuesday commemorated International Day of the Girl Child as well as Ada Lovelace Day, a day to celebrate women mathematicians and scientists, named after the Ealing-based pioneering 19th century computer scientist. Organised by the Ealing Women’s Forum, the event brought together scores of women for the Forum’s Big Conversation, led by Jackie Sear.

THE AVENUE W13 > In last week’s edition, The_Ealinger contributor Joanna Dudzinska wrote about discovering a book called ‘Polish Ealing’, a Polish Ealing historian’s perspective of post-WWII Ealing.

This week, nestled among the local newspapers, the lottery tickets and the cellophane-wrapped sweets in the West Ealing Newsagency, she finds ‘A Little Boy’s War’, Roy Bartlett’s book remembering what it was like growing up in Ealing during the same war, sustaining a leg injury in the 1940 Blitz, and as a hungry child surviving on food rations.

Now in his late 80s, Roy happily comes along on his mobility scooter to meet Joanna and sign her copy of the book, under the kind and watchful eye of Jo, behind the counter of her parents’ shop of 40 years.

“This is my second book,” Roy explains. “The first one was about playing for the Ealing football club.” He remembers playing in Moscow, and changing planes in Warsaw at the time of the Soviet invasion of Prague. That book is sold out but ‘A Little Boy’s War’ is still available.

Bake sale for Haiti MONTPELIER PARK W5 > A group of school mums, led by Naglaa Mrabti, got baking and shopping and put on a cake sale last Thursday to raise money for the victims of recent Hurricane Matthew which savaged the Caribbean country Haiti and left hundreds of thousands of children in urgent need of humanitarian aid.

Within one hour, the sale had raised ÂŁ432.35, which the group will be donating to the charity Save the Children.

Lido Centre: a community hub MATTOCK LANE W13 > With excitement building up over the new West Ealing Workspace coworking space under refurbishment at St James’s House, The_Ealinger went to have a look at another hub in West Ealing – one with a community focus rather than business, at the Lido Centre, corner of Mattock Lane and Northfield Avenue.

Manager Sasha Rhoden showed off different sized meeting rooms, kitchen facilities and shared offices, while explaining how the centre works with voluntary groups and charities in Ealing.
