Q&A

Pamela Redrup Pam Redrup is the founder of Tea Darling vintage tea room. Pam is also involved with The Questors Theatre, initially as a stage manager and now as a director. Here she talks about cakes, china and pop-ups...

S

o often we hear about why cakes are bad for us (physically). Tell us about the times when cakes are good for us (soul-wise). > Well, cakes are only really bad for us if we have too many! The good thing about a home baked cake is you can use wholesome ingredients and control what’s in it. At Tea Darling people love the real china and cake fork experience – so I think a delicious slice of home baking tastes all the better when you have time to enjoy it in a relaxed setting.

“I am very excited to be holding a vintage fair on 3 Dec – look out for details of that soon”

Q&A

This was your third Tea Darling pop-up event – how come it took place at The Questors? > The Questors café area is always very quiet in the summer months as there are no shows on in the theatres (there’s a 300 seat Playhouse plus a

100 seat Studio). So Tea Darling took the space to see if people would come to the theatre ‘out of season’ just for tea and cake. It was part of my research to see if Tea Darling could be a destination. Tea Darling brings new people into the theatre and promotes the upcoming season of plays – all our furniture is from Questors prop store. I am thrilled that I have been offered the contract for Tea Darling to stay on at The Questors!

Where do you get all these amazing antique china pieces? > I have collected them all over the years from boot fairs, eBay, online sellers – particularly local Facebook ‘friends’ pages, and a few donations. I love everything vintage and I am very excited to be holding a vintage fair on 3 Dec – look out for details of that soon. What do you think of the pop-up concept overall? > I think it’s great, especially for businesses that want to test out the market without the worry of

major financial commitment. It certainly helped me understand how to bring Tea Darling to life and attract visitors. What would you like Ealingers to know about Tea Darling? I’d like people to feel as enthusiastic as I am about my china and home-made cake! I play vintage music too – and I really want people to feel a teeny bit nostalgic and relax from the 21st century buzz for a few minutes. teadarling.co.uk @Teadarling87 teadarling87 – interview by Carlene Bender

Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure is set in a city where justice takes a disturbing new shape after the ruling duke steps down. Under the puritanical regime of his deputy Angelo, Claudio is condemned to death. His sister Isabella is called from her convent to plead with Angelo for his life. This powerful drama raises challenging questions about the power of the state over the individual, as Isabella wrestles with the choice of saving her soul or her brother’s life.

Reasons to join our walk The_Ealinger supports the South Acton Walk and Talk scheduled for Sun 6 November, with tour director Joanna Dudzinska. Here is a testimonial from Tony, who attended the recent West Ealing walk: “The[se walks] are not your usual kind of walks with a knowledgeable person expounding on the history of perhaps quite well-known sights. They are walks with an interesting enthusiast going round places that may not be your normal places for sight-seeing but places that still have an interesting past and an interesting and sometimes controversial present – for example, have you heard of ‘community cleansing’? And what better way to both improve your knowledge of today’s London and today’s English! Please come and join us on the next walk.” Ealing Walking, Talking and Exploring Group

Local biz, have your say in the Ealing Council Ealing Business Survey www.ealing.gov.uk/ebs

South Acton Walk and Talk Sunday 6 November – 11am to 1pm Start: Acton Town station; finish Chiswick Park

This friendly tour will take you to another part of the West London borough of Ealing. We will stroll through the changing area, look at the street art and take in as much as possible. Join in whether you want to improve your English, meet new people or do some sightseeing off the main tourist routes. During the walk you may find out which of the famous graffiti artists is called STIK and why; and see the unique abode and vehicle of the celebrated English craftivist, Carrie Reichardt and maybe even bump into her. We will probably also see the place hit by a German bomb, more street art, some wildlife and some gentrification, not to mention Soapsuds Island! The tour costs £10 per person payable by Eventbrite or on the day (children free but your responsibility).
