Foggy days in the park MONTPELIER PARK W5 > It’s been a long hard lonely winter; here at last comes the sun, upping temperatures into the double-figures and giving us an early boost through to the spring. There wasn’t very much by way of snow in Ealing in January, but there were a few misty and foggy mornings.

What The_Ealinger did in January

EALING W5 > Here’s a week-by-week overview of what one local person, ‘The_Ealinger’ (we’re just a typical Ealing resident and worker), was up to this past month.

Week 1: Before The_Ealinger had even battened down the hatches on January 1 (we are not the earliest to bed), reports started coming through of a huge fire at the award-winning Aeronaut pub in Acton.

Heartbreaking it was, considering how much work the owners and staff had put into changing the image of the pub from what it had been in the 1990s, to a multi-entertainment family hub on the High Street.

Ealing Christmas officially ended when we saw the lights coming down on Eccleston Road, West Ealing (the scene was featured on our Christmas cover).

The_Ealinger stopped to chat with Stan and Marie Eltham as they were packing away the light-up Santa and his magic helper figures for yet another year.

“We started [these outdoor Christmas lights] 20 years ago, to delight our Aeronaut new year fire: within days, scaffolding had gone up around the building – a good sign!

p u nd grandchildren,” explained Marie. “This is the second year we’re doing it to raise money for charity.

“Our youngest grandchild is now nine weeks old. It’s nice to see the reaction of the children when they see the lights.”

Speaking of the grandchildren, it was back to school in the first week of January; for us at The_Ealinger going through the switch to a monthly rotation, it was interesting for the first time in a year not having a magazine to put out every seven days.

Week 2: Many business-owners waited until the second week or so to get back to the grindstone, but not the networking community, who came out in numbers to kickstart the year with a bit of evening networking with Anita Wong’s Ealing Connect group on 9 January.

We had good news emerging from the new West Ealing Workspace – and a new name! The coworking-hub-to-be would officially be called Ealing Works, fitting the theme of working and coworking in the borough.

The_Ealinger sat in as the hub designers/architects, Bethan Kay and Meghan Charnley from Projects Office, presented their 10-point Manifesto to guide the refurbishment of the hub.

We especially like point number four on the Manifesto: “This is an exciting Continues on page 4

place to make locals proud and tempt newcomers in.”

Week 3: By the third week of the year, Christmas was but a gentle memory, and anyone announcing that they were only just returning to work was given ‘the stare’.

The_Ealinger’s little red diary (more people than you realise still use a paper diary ok) was full of meetings and events and networking and training, including a full brain-frying day of learning the ins and outs of WordPress for websites with Bommie Media.

On Tuesday 17th, we were delighted to join in a fundraising Walk for Syria in Montpelier Park, organised by Naglaa Mrabti and a team of parents from nearby schools.

Children and parents together walked or jogged several laps around the park, and at the end were rewarded with steaming cups of hot chocolate – with marshmallows melting in it ooh.

Naglaa happily reported the next day that a sum of over £1000 was raised by the after-school event, and would be donated to the Save the Children fund for Syria.

Week 4: Probably the hlighlight of week number four was the first Ealing Tweetup of 2017, organised by local PR guru Michael Greer and warmly hosted

It was also time to say goodbye to the Christmas season according to the Gregorian calendar (which runs roughly two weeks after the Julian calendar), as followed by the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox church on Newton Avenue, Acton, where The_Ealinger looks in from time to time.

The occasion was even more special because Archbishop Daniel was in attendance.

As the month drew Squeezed in a to a close and the day’s WordPress local self-employed and website training freelance people totted up their earnings and other calculations and presented them to the tax-man, the temperatures crept above 10 degrees, and the sun shone a little longer. n this issue we feature Pauline Gilbertson, who is festival manager for the Ealing Music and Film Festival.

The EMFF is in its fifth year, and is set for 8 - 12 February at various locations around Ealing.

Pauline is a former director of the English Chamber Orchestra. She is now a freelance music consultant.

I love the fact that they are so well used by a wide variety of people doing all sorts of different activities – family outings, jogging, cycling, dog walking, tai chi, community gardening and bee keeping, bird and bat watching, moth monitoring, pond dipping. Free fun and fresh air right on our doorstep for all age groups!

Everything I possibly can!

What’s the most Ealing thing you do? > I walk a lot in my local parks, often with our dog, visiting Walpole, Lammas, Pitshanger, Hanger Hill, Montpelier etc.

For me Ealing’s parks define the borough; they are its heart, soul and of course lungs!

Sport to start the year right > Indoor or outdoor, on astroturf or grass (mud), sporting activity continues throughout the borough during the winter.

Actonians Ladies cricketers – formerly known as Old Actonians Ladies – have planned a few indoor pre-season games at the Twyford Sports Centre in Acton (see advert on page 12) where it’s nice and sheltered. On New Year’s Day morning, the traditional Pitshanger FC ‘Dads & Sons’ football game saw the Sons win on “penalties”.

ARTification in Acton NORTH ACTON W3 > The_Ealinger’s freelance contributor, Joanna Dudzinska, is also a volunteer at the new ARTification project (formerly Acton Arts Forum), working with director Rachel Pepper. The project describes itself as: “Continuing development of better communications, marketing and promotion of the arts.”
