marriages and departures. I have loved – and continue to love – every minute! Congratulations on 60 years in business: that’s a lot of hard work! Was there ever a bit of luck? Celebrity endorsements? Every business has its ups and downs and if ups are considered lucky breaks then yes, we’ve had a few. We have worked hard to establish a trustworthy, reliable and reasonably priced service. Of course over the years we have had a notable amount of well known customers but to us it’s a privilege to provide a service to all our customers.

A sixty-year run What was Barry Nicoll’s dad Len thinking when he started Burlington Motors in Acton in 1956? Could he have imagined the garage still going 60 years later, looking after the cars of later generations of his original clients? We ask Barry in our Q&A.

urlington Motors is a family-run independent garage, established in 1956 by my father Leonard John Nicoll, who was a tool maker by trade,’ says Barry. “The business’ first home was just below where I and my older brother Colin were born and where we all lived with my mother Sybil (who had also grown up there with her mother) in Burlington Mews. “The garage was located there for 32 years until a developer at

auction bought the whole mews. “We are now just a few hundred metres up the road, next to Acton Central train station, and have been right here for just over 28 years. “I have personally been running the business since 1977. “As you say, we have dealt with and retained many of our customers over the years. “We are very proud to be dealing with second and third generations of the same families, witnessing births,

What’s the family side of the business like these days? My wife Rosemary has been in the Burlington office with me as financial secretary for the last 17 and a half years, and in the last five years we have also been joined on a permanent basis by our youngest son, Henry. For 36 years we have experienced family events alongside many of our customers – we’ve even been on holiday and bumped into customers and suppliers with their children.
