Her work is exhibited internationally and is in numerous collections, including the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She is on the faculty at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington, D.C., where she teaches courses in bookbinding and book structures.

Brittany Søndberg Material Arrangements: The Brooch June 28 & 29, page 6 Brittany Søndberg is a metalsmith from Greensboro, NC where she owns her own jewelry company, Copper Chameleon Jewelry, focusing on vitreous enamels, uncommon stones, and responsibly sourced precious metals. Through her work in jewelry design and small fabrication, she also creates emotionally charged, aesthetically surprising installations and sculptural objects. Her work is in a variety of galleries and boutiques throughout the Northeastern United States and has been shown in a number of national exhibitions.

Jessica Todd Kinetic Jewelry July 12 & 13, page 6 Jessica Todd draws inspiration from suburbia and the American values of homogeneity, stability, order, and self-discipline. Conceptually driven, her jewelry often transforms into sculpture. She is a Jewelry/Metals TA at Kent State University and has exhibited work at American Craft Today in North Carolina and Step Gallery in Arizona among others.

c l ay Textured Tile Mosaics 4 Tuesdays June 3, 10, 17 & 24 6—9 pm instructor: Alix Paul level: all Create textured tiles of all shapes and sizes from clay slabs. Add found objects – such as stained glass, mirror bits, gems, shells, beads, and metal – to your glazed and fired tiles to create a photo frame or mirror. Tuition: $200 Materials Fee: $10

This workshop will expose students to the tricks of the trade and versatility of ceramics. Suitable for beginners just starting out in clay or those with a little more experience. Summer of Ceramics In conjunction with Transformation 9: Contemporary Works in Ceramics, the Studio is celebrating a summer of ceramics! Each month features a different series of clay workshops led by some of our favorite ceramic instructors. The season culminates with a special weekend focusing on porcelain paperclay. Join us in exploring this irresistible medium!

Hand-Built Lidded Container 4 Tuesdays August 5, 12, 19 & 26 6—9 pm instructor: Michael Smithhammer level: all Construct two lidded containers while learning approaches to surface treatments that enhance the tactile beauty of your ceramic forms. Tuition: $200 Materials Fee: $30

Porcelain Paperclay at Cone 6: Hand-Built Vessels of Expressive Freedom Saturday & Sunday August 9 & 10 9 am—4 pm instructor: Danna Eve Rzecznik level: all Explore the expressive possibilities and technical advantages of hand-building with cone 6 porcelain paperclay. Students will learn the practical process of converting commercial porcelain into the easy-to-use and versatile material of paperclay. The instructor will demonstrate hand-building techniques with an emphasis on pinching, soft-slab construction, application of texture, and glaze application in the dry state. Students will create their own unique functional or sculptural vessels. Tuition: $160 Materials Fee: $15

Saturday & Sunday July 12 & 13 9 am—4 pm instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten level: all In two fun sessions, design and build your own cutting board set with a selection of different species of lumber. Learn how to use a jointer, planer, and table saw to surface prep raw wood, as well as procedures to adjoin boards. Enjoy finishing your board by sanding, shaping edges, and using other tools. Saturday & Sunday July 19 & 20 10 am—5 pm instructor: Robert Bishop level: all Make your own lidded keepsake box while getting acquainted with various wood species and selection of stock. Half-lap and dowel joinery; wood grain orientation; design; proper sanding; and wood finishing techniques will be covered. Both woodworking machinery and hand tools will be used to complete this project. Tuition: $160 Materials Fee: $60 (Payable to SCC upon registration)

Learn to crochet three-dimensional objects, including garments, with SCC Fashion Show artist Rae Gold. This workshop is best suited for students who have already mastered the basics of crochet. Natural Dyes: Start to Finish Saturday, August 23, 12—4 pm & Sunday, August 24, 10 am—4 pm instructor: Jennifer Moss level: all Learn everything you need to know to make your own natural dyes from locally sourced plant materials. On day one, students will prep materials, gather dyestuff, and cook dyes. Day two will reveal the wide range of colors available from the natural world. Safety procedures and processes for dyeing in your own home will also be covered. Tuition: $100 Materials Fee: $45

Introduction to Modern Quilting Saturday & Sunday August 30 & 31 9 am­—4 pm Jodi McLaughlin instructor: Jodi McLaughlin level: intermediate Learn the basics of quilting with a modern twist and discover why this beautiful, traditional craft is experiencing a contemporary revival. Led by Jodi McLaughlin, one of the cofounders of the Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild, this workshop covers the fundamentals of modern quilting. Students will complete a table runner, set of placemats, or mini-quilt while learning about tools and techniques such as piecing and straight-line quilting. Learn simple techniques to make jewelry that spins, cranks, springs, and rotates. Vitreous Enameling Sunday, July 20 10 am—5 pm instructor: Adrienne Grafton level: all Spend the day learning the basics of vitreous enameling using techniques such as sifting, firing, basse-taille, and sgraffito. Sunday, July 26 12 pm—4 pm instructor: Carol Scheftic level: all Capture the joy of summer butterflies in “metal clay.” A variety of basic techniques will be covered allowing students to create their choice of charms, earrings, beads, pendants, bookmarks, or a sun-catcher. Saturday, August 23 10 am—5 pm instructor: Samantha Skelton level: all Make uniquely forged jewelry using a variety of hammers and texturing tools. Students will have the option to make earrings, rings, or pendants using different patinas to showcase the jewelry’s texture. Tuition: $80 Materials Fee: $30

Enameling on Formed Metal Saturday & Sunday August 2 & 3 10 am—5 pm instructor: Sarah Loch-Test level: all Join former Studio Apprentice Sarah Loch-Test for a weekend of enameling. Metal forming and enamel can be combined in endless ways to create visual information, pattern, and depth. In this workshop students will experiment with applying enamel to sheet copper that has been pierced, dapped, and chased. Creative methods for setting and attaching enameled components will be covered on the second day. Tuition: $160 Materials Fee: $20 Samantha Skelton

What Lies Beneath Our Feet: Hunting & Foraging for Mosaic in an Urban Landscape Saturday & Sunday June 7 & 8 9 am—4 pm instructor: Rachel Sager level: all Discover the magic of transforming raw material into tesserae, the building blocks of mosaic, with award-winning Pittsburgh mosaic artist Rachel Sager. This two-day workshop will include a field trip along the Allegheny River to source material, an introduction to cutting stone, guidance in working in high quality thin-set mortar, and Rachel's unique approach to contemporary mosaic philosophy. Sogetsu Ikebana Saturday, July 19 10 am—1 pm instructor: Reiko Nakajima level: all Explore the Moribana style of Japanese flower arranging with a flat container and pinpoint holder. Students will learn Ikebana techniques including cutting, trimming, and bending branches and flowers to create structured lines in their arrangements. Introduction to the Art of Bonsai Sunday, July 20 10 am—4 pm instructor: Daniel Yobp level: all Explore the art of bonsai through a slide presentation and demonstrations. By the end of the day, participants will begin to transform a garden shrub into a bonsai. Guidance about after care, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and overwintering, will be provided. Thursday & Friday June 26 & 27 9 am—4 pm H visiting artist: Carol Barton, Glen Echo, MD level: all Creative magic awaits you in this workshop! Learn basic on-the-fold pop-up structures, and then progress through a series of more complicated three-dimensional glued constructions. Props, platforms, spirals, V-folds, and straddle pop-ups will be covered. Emphasis will be on developing an understanding of the simple mechanics involved in the art of “paper engineering.” This is an ideal class for artists, teachers, graphic designers, and anyone who loves to play with paper. Chroma-Sewn: Colorful Paper Stitching Sunday, June 8 10 am—5 pm instructor: Karen Krieger level: all Create a "memory bouquet" and celebrate the change of seasons with a day devoted to color and floral imagery. In many cases, the finished sculptures can be lit from inside. The instructor will bring examples of her work to introduce design possibilities. Tuition: $160 Materials Fee: $30

Carousel & Tunnel Books Saturday & Sunday June 28 & 29 9 am—4 pm H visiting artist: Carol Barton, Glen Echo, MD level: all This two-day workshop will introduce students to paper engineering related to books. A “carousel” or “star” book consists of several accordion-fold sheets bound together to create stage-like pages. Learn the basics of constructing this book form and start to develop layered imagery around a theme or text as content. A “tunnel” or “peepshow” book is a set of pages bound with accordions on two sides and viewed through a central opening. Students will learn the basics of constructing a tunnel book by building structural models and will then explore options for adding text and imagery. Tuition: $200 Materials Fee: $30

Friday, June 6 6—9 pm instructor: Laurie Trok level: all Turn your breath into a sculpture! Using your breath to manipulate India ink, create abstract works on paper that will be cut and collaged into unique sculptures. Tuition: $35 (includes materials and two complimentary beverages)

Friday, August 15 6—9 pm instructor: Katy Dement level: all Craft brewing has stepped into the visual arts realm! Using the grains, fibers, and vines reclaimed from the manufacturing of beer, students will create golden handmade papers. Embellish your paper with hop flowers and wet-on-wet collage with vintage ephemera. Tuition: $35 (includes materials and two complimentary beverages)

Basic Beaded Necklace Friday, June 20 6—9 pm instructor: Netti Palmieri level: all Designing your own jewelry can be fun and easy! In this workshop students will learn basic stringing techniques to create a beaded necklace. Tuition: $35 (includes materials and two complimentary beverages)

Fun with Polymer Clay Friday, July 18 6—9 pm instructor: Laura Tabakman level: all Assemble a pendant, a pair of earrings, or a magnet while getting a little taste of the endless possibilities of polymer clay. Many basic techniques, including simple canes, textures, and stamping, will be covered. Tuition: $35 (includes materials and two complimentary beverages)

Adjustable Rings Friday, August 22 6—9 pm instructor: Anya Weitzman level: all A simple introduction to metalworking, this workshop yields a take-home wearable piece of jewelry for every participant. Make an adjustable ring and learn the basics of ring sizing, sawing, filing, stamping, annealing, and forming. Tuition: $35 (includes materials and two complimentary beverages)

CLASS INFORMATION

• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials. • SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

MATERIALS

Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS

Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded. Refund Policy Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks. 3-5 Day Workshops Cancellations with 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a three-, four- or five-day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a three-, four- or five-day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

One-on-One & Studio Rentals

Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. Also, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
