a word from Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) was founded in 1971 by Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael in the belief that contemporary
artists had new things to say with traditional materials and that they needed wider opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Since then SCC has organized more than 220 exhibitions, created strong educational and community outreach programs, established a satellite gallery and a permanent collection, and developed a growing retail business.

our director Dear Friends, While Pittsburgh’s winters have earned a reputation for being harsh and seemingly endless, many among us find them to be equally inspiring. The still quiet that follows a snowfall, cozy Sunday afternoons spent with a book, and the season’s innate ability to arouse introspection can all conspire to ignite the creative spark. This winter’s Studio courses and workshops at SCC have been designed to nurture that spark and to celebrate the creative process. On February 3, our next exhibition in the Raphael Prize series, Transformation 8: Contemporary Works in Small Metals, opens with selections from 33 artists who are among the most versatile and talented working within the field today. Our enthusiasm for showcasing their creativity is matched by their passion for the medium, and their talent for sharing that passion with others. Within this catalogue are opportunities to work alongside many of them. Through The Studio we offer not only the ability to view remarkable works of art, but also a way to step into the very center of this fascinating world by meeting the artists who produce them. And even if you’re not inclined to make something, you can register for a new series of classes called Meet a Maker. These experiences allow you to talk directly with contemporary artists to explore their creative processes, learn what inspires them, and find out how they go about taking that inspiration into form. Raphael Prize finalist Bob Ebendorf is among the truly exceptional nationally known artists who will be teaching in The Studio this year. Don’t miss your chance to meet him! A seminal figure in the metals and jewelry field, Bob’s relationship with SCC spans three decades, dating back to his earliest days as a maker. He subsequently has taught and influenced a generation of artists, and continues to be a leading influence on the craft field. Many established and emerging artists who have exhibited at SCC have studied under his tutelage including another 2011 Raphael Prize finalist Daniel DiCaprio and our own Store Merchandise Coordinator Sharon Massey. In my opinion, there’s no better use of a winter’s weekend than spending it with a truly original thinker such as Bob Ebendorf, who has the gift of helping us see in unexpected new ways (and is also one of the most accessible artists you’ll ever meet). Whether you are a maker or just an enthusiastic student of the world, this season’s Studio classes offer kindling that will ignite your creative spark and keep those wintry winds at bay. Pysanky: Ukrainian Easter Egg Writing [T031512] date & time: Thursday, March 15 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. instructor: Michael Kapeluck Pysanky writing is the ancient Ukrainian art of decorating eggs using a batik or wax resist technique. An iconographer and member of the Ukrainian community of Carnegie, Michael Kapeluck will teach participants how to create multi-colored Easter eggs with hot beeswax and dye. Tuition: $45

instructor: Sharon Massey Learn to etch patterns, designs, images and text into copper, brass, nickel and steel in this workshop. A variety of resist options will be used to create the imagery and ferric chloride will be used as the mordant. Safer than traditionally used acids, ferric chloride creates a clean etch without undercutting. Etched surfaces can be used in a variety of applications, including basse-taille enamel, jewelry fabrication, roll-printing on silver and more. Tuition: $60
instructor: Lindsay Huff If you've always been curious about enameling, here's the perfect chance to try it. You'll spend an evening in the metals studio and emerge with ready-to-wear enamel art jewelry. Basic enameling history, safety and techniques will be covered. Tuition: $45

Students will make simple PMC projects, such as earrings or small pendants, and fire them in class with an inexpensive butane torch. The workshop will also present other jewelry techniques possible with a butane torch, such as fusing jump rings closed and joining pieces with solder. Both beginning and returning students are welcome.

Champlevé is the process of wet-inlaying enamel into small troughs in the metal. Put your sawing and soldering skills to use by cutting a design in one layer of metal, soldering it to the second layer and then filling in the cells you’ve made with fused glass. Maplewood, New Jersey, also represented in the SCC Store The opposing qualities of fiber and metal— warm versus cool, soft versus hard, flexible versus rigid—draw enthusiasts from both mediums, as well as curious beginners. Learn needle and wet felting techniques to make one-of-a-kind colorful hanging earrings from wool roving. Also learn to use pliers to form French hooks with silver wire and to use a jeweler's saw to incorporate silver tubing to add structural strength and interest. All levels welcome.

First, learn to shape wool roving into beads using needle felting techniques, then to lay down color, lines and other surface treatments, followed by wet felting to full or firm the bead. Creating blends and gradations of color will also be covered. Next, learn the metal skills to punch, dap, drill and wire wrap in order to add internal support and finished end caps to your bead. Using fine silver metal clay, students will learn how to make a simple hollow shape and then transform it into a darling, charmsized whistle with a sweet-sounding note. This workshop will explain how a whistle works, cover troubleshooting tips and tricks, and utilize the instructor’s tested methods for ensuring success. Some metal clay experience suggested, but beginners are welcome. Although this project is complex, Donna’s step-by-step teaching style and individual attention will ensure that even beginners will come away with a successful whistle and troubleshooting tips and tricks found nowhere else. instructor: Donna Penoyer Working in metal clay is a wonderful way to take inspiration from nature, capturing springtime details beautifully and easily. This workshop will utilize two inexpensive metal clays, bronze and copper, used separately or together to make pendants, charms or earrings. Two approaches will be presented: 1) impressing metal clay directly with leaves, bark, etc., to create jewelry with natural textures and 2) taking molds of natural objects such as tiny shells to create raised images and components. No experience necessary.
H instructor: Kathryn Osgood, visiting artist from Wanchese, North Carolina, also represented in the SCC Store Explore color and form in jewelry using nature as inspiration. Learn to enamel on threedimensional forms, creating colorful surfaces by layering transparent and opaque enamels and developing rich surface textures through sugar-firing enamels. Learn techniques for setting your enamel piece to create a finished jewel. We will cover metal forming techniques including shell forming, fold forming and die forming. We will also cover the use of acrylic and watercolor enamels, foils and underglazes to add detail. Techniques for setting enamels will include prong setting, tab setting, pre-soldered findings and frame setting. Previous metalworking experience is helpful, but all levels are welcome.

Explore color through the use of traditional and alternative methods of color on metal including patinas, resin, image transfer, color pencil and torch fired enamel. In this class we will experiment with color as a means of surface enrichment and personal expression. Each student will produce textured color pencil earrings and a color resin pendant.

H instructor: Dauvit Alexander, visiting artist from Glasgow, Scotland A two-day workshop, for young artists ages 12 to 16, to promote creativity and awareness of environmental issues related to craft practices. Each participant will learn some basic jewelry craft skills and will complete at least one piece of jewelry, which can be taken away at the end of the course. The participants will be encouraged to think about environmental issues, especially recycling, in a discursive and non-prescriptive way, leading to the development of creative responses to the issues raised.

The workshop aims to introduce the participants to techniques they may not have tried before, as well as new ways of doing more traditional techniques. This workshop is intended for practicing jewelers of any level, either “hobbyist” or professional, who wish to expand their repertoire of techniques or who are looking to find new ways of working within their existing practices. Participants should bring along examples of their existing work and be prepared to discuss these with the group. Participants will leave this workshop with unusual and unique answers to jewelry design. These answers will be in drawing, writing and primitive model format, acting as fuel for future development. This symposium coincides with the opening of the Transformation 8 exhibition, and participants will include Transformation 8 artists Robert Ebendorf and Daniel DiCaprio. instructor: Brian Ferrell, SCC exhibiting and Store artist Students will construct a small wooden box with either a hinged or slotted lid. A variety of joinery techniques will be taught. Ferrell was honored with a solo exhibition at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater in 2008 and from October 14 to December 4, 2011 had a solo exhibition at the SCC Satellite Gallery at BNY Mellon Center. *Some previous woodworking experience is required.
H instructor: Daniel DiCaprio, Transformation 8 exhibition and SCC Store artist visiting from Richmond, Virginia During this class students will carve rings from blocks of ebony. DiCaprio is known for his compelling combinations of wood and metal. Learn how to make rings fit and how to hand carve your designs with files, rasps and burs. Students will learn how to combine the two approaches in order to go beyond the flat format and expand into the three-dimensional hollow and solid forms. Using damaged 100% wool sweaters in combination with virgin wool will be demonstrated. So, if moths feasted on your favorite wool sweater to the point of irreparable damage, do not despair! Skills learned in this workshop may be applied to future creative projects that are tiny or sculptural in scale. This workshop focuses on learning the foundation of felting and getting a solid grasp on how to construct threedimensional forms with the material. Learn burnout or devoré, a mild chemical process that dissolves or “burns away” certain fibers in the cloth where you print or paint it. On silk backed velvet it leaves transparent areas with no pile. On 100% cotton it will leave holes. With blended yarns it simply thins the fabric and lets light through. In this workshop participants will receive recipes and a variety of techniques for successfully designing and processing cloth, including using amazing dyes that result in two different colors in one simple process! Potter Linda Tafoya-Sanchez, the granddaughter of the matriarch of Santa Clara Pottery, Margaret Tafoya, will demonstrate traditional Southwest hand-built ceramics as her son, Jeremy Oyenque, narrates the process and reveals its purpose and meaning. Puppetry is an art form accessible to artists of all skill levels. Sarver will cover techniques for planning, constructing and performing a portable puppet theater show. This experimental workshop leads up to the Puppet Happening Annual Festival, planned to open at the end of February. On the first day, students will make molds and produce the inside layer of hollow beads, pendants or vessels using their own molds. Different closing mechanisms will be explored. Learn how to use multi-layered stencils in direct-transfer and silkscreening and try transfer methods for both paper and fabric. Students will cut their own spray-painting stencils and learn nonphotographic methods to silkscreen. In combination with the afternoon workshop Ceramic Embellishments [MM030312b], artists and art teachers will be able to use contemporary stencil techniques on a range of surfaces in their artwork and teaching. *Students are welcome to bring their own textiles and/or paper for printing. In this workshop, learn techniques for embellishment on handmade and mass-produced ceramics. Both original and commercial decals application will be demonstrated in conjunction with low-fired accent glazes and lusters. Whether used abstractly or precisely, stringer designs are used in the techniques of raking, feathering, furrowing and ‘spider webbing’. Darlene has been creating glass beads since 1997. In 2009, her Green with Envy Necklace was one of five finalists in the Saul Bell Design Award ‘beads’ category. Both projects will be embellished with relief textures drawn from nature to make surface impressions that can be appreciated by sight and touch. When Lambert, an established painter, unexpectedly lost her sight, she turned to painting in clay. This medium allows her not only to see with her fingers, but also to share her vision in her artwork. The workshop is designed for both sighted and low-vision students to explore new ways of seeing and expressing through pottery. Tuition: $70 Materials Fee: $12

With an emphasis on mixed media, this workshop introduces participants to the basics of encaustic painting as well as a variety of advanced techniques including equipment and safety issues, tools, grounds and substrates, application and painting techniques, fusing, color mixing, incising, sgraffito, creating texture, surface manipulation, image transfer and collage. instructor: Darlene Durrwachter-Rushing, SCC Store artist Using Hot Head torches, a portable and inexpensive torch, this workshop focuses on creating simple but eye-catching shapes with beads, moving beyond the basic round bead to creating tubular, square, asymmetrical, torpedo, disc and other multi-shaped beads. We’ll also explore changes in shape and texture with different marvers, creating grooves and indentations. Darlene created a collaborative piece with fellow SCC artist Donna Penoyer, which was part of an international exhibition tour for over a year, including Japan. New and returning students are welcome, and can expect to create four to ten glass beads.
from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania This workshop takes the exciting combination of fiber and encaustic far beyond straightforward collage to include innovative materials and mark-making techniques. Working on wood, paper and fabric, participants will explore the mark-making possibilities of rust, branding and compost printing. Participants will also combine encaustic with the textural possibilities of heated Tyvek® fabric and papers. The heating of this polyester-based material with an iron or heat gun renders it malleable, thus creating highly textured and sculptural surfaces in combination with encaustic. Open to those with an intermediate to advanced level of encaustic experience, participants are encouraged to step out of their current comfort zone through a series of thought provoking exercises. CLASS INFORMATION •S tudents who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation call within seven days. • It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice. • Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials. • SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.
MATERIALS Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, Materials Fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.
CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded by check. Refund Policy Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks. Week-long Workshops Cancellations with 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a week-long workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a week-long class, there will be a 50% cancellation fee. There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.
