BACKGROUND Presenting contemporary art in craft media by regional, national, and international artists since 1971, Contemporary Craft (CC) offers cutting edge exhibitions focusing on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, as well as a range of studio workshops, community outreach programs, and a retail store. With its mission of engaging the public in creative experiences through contemporary craft, CC offers meaningful art opportunities for more than 145,000 people a year through four core values: providing vital support for artists; filling critical gaps in public education; sharing cross-cultural perspectives; and using art to build community.

CEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR JEWELRY Demitra Thomloudis Athens, GA Sat, September 30 Page 6 Demitra Thomloudis is a studio jeweler, visual artist and an Assistant Professor in the Jewelry and Metalwork area at the Lamar Dodd School of Art. She has been invited to exhibit, lecture, and teach at institutions/ fairs/events such as SOFA Chicago, Athens Jewelry Week (Greece) and the Penland School of Crafts.

SUSTAINABLE JEWELRY FROM TIN CANS Bryan Peterson Bozeman, MT Sat, October 7 Page 8 Bryan Peterson is a sculptural artist and metalsmith who is currently teaching at Montana State University. His work has been published in Lark’s book, Fabulous Jewelry From Found Objects, and Hollan Publisher’s book, Creating Collage Jewelry.

INTRODUCTION TO POP-UP BOOK STRUCTURES Colette Fu Philadelphia, PA Sat & Sun, December 2 & 3 Page 10 Colette Fu has been making pop-up books with her own photography for over 14 years. Her work is included in the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art and many private and rare archive collections.

CLAY TEAPOTS Sat & Sun, September 23 & 24 10am-5pm Instructor: Yoko Sekino-BovĂŠ Level: all Construct a ceramic teapot using hand-building techniques. On the second day, participants will create a cup or two for their set.

The workshop will cover soft-slab construction techniques such as stamping, carving, and under glaze painting.

SLIP CASTING Sat & Sun, October 7 & 8 10am-5pm Instructor: Chelsey Albert Level: all Learn the casting process and create a functional object from non-traditional materials.

Participants will craft cups, teapots, bowls and plates using slip casting, mold making and assemblage. Bring along an object to cast to make your pieces more unique! Each set will be dipped in a clear glaze functional.

POLYMER CLAY Sat, October 21 10am-5pm Instructor: Laura Tabakman Level: all Students will learn basic polymer clay sculpting techniques to Techniques used in color mixing including Skinner blend and how to integrate wire with polymer clay will be covered.

SUSTAINABLE GARMENT DESIGN Sat, September 9 10am-5pm Instructor: Jhenny Adams Level: all In this class, students will learn the basics of garment construction that will lead them to the wardrobe of their dreams! The instructor will lead participants through sewing and patterning techniques as well as sustainable habits that they can use to incorporate into their own studio practice.

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING: HEXAGONS Sat, October 14 10am-5pm Instructor: Jodi McLaughlin Level: all Learn basic English Paper Piecing (EPP), a quilt-making technique, to create gorgeous geometric shapes with fabric scraps. Students will work with the hexagon and learn how to use essential quilting techniques such as glue basting, appliquĂŠ, and hand quilting. Each student will go home with a mini quilt.

RUG HOOKING TECHNIQUES WITH T-SHIRT YARN Sat, November 11 10am-5pm Instructor: Kirsten Ervin Level: all Using primitive rug hooking techniques, students will create unique and colorful brooches and ornaments from recycled T-shirt yarn. Students will master techniques for making the T-shirt yarn, designing and hooking the brooch or ornament, and finishing the piece with a handsewn fabric backing.

KREEPY DOLL STOCKING STUFFERS Sat, December 2 1pm-5pm Instructor: Daniel Baxter Level: all Kreepy dolls made with love are perfect stocking stuffers for kids, good and bad! Learn sewing techniques used in kreepy doll making and explore magical design by digging deep into your imagination.

MIXED MEDIA

INTRO TO MOSAIC PROCESSING Sat & Sun, September 30 & October 1 10am-5pm Instructor: Christina Fisher Level: all In this two-day workshop, students will learn about the history of mosaic art and master the techniques used in the creation of this beautiful art form. Technical instruction will include design, shaping, application, and curing.

The instructor will guide students in using the techniques to make a small wall-hanging mosaic.

CEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR JEWELRY Sat, September 30 10am-5pm Instructor: Demitra Thomloudis Level: all SHELTER RELATED ACTIVITY In this workshop, students will learn to create hollow, lightweight objects using cement, and apply these techniques within the format of jewelry. Silicone mold making, resin, and acrylic surface techniques will also be covered. Metalworking skills are encouraged but not required.

CROCHET WIRE & BEADS NECKLACE Sat, September 16 1-4pm Instructor: Kitty Savel Level: all Students will learn how to crochet with wire and create beautiful jewelry. Using a simple chain-stitch technique, students will discover how to connect the wire in delicate and intricate ways. Beads and stones will be incorporated resulting in a colorful, unique necklace.

Tuition: $45 Materials: $15 HAND STITCHED LEATHER BAGS Sun, November 5 & 12 1-4pm Instructor: Eddie Shaw Level: all Design and create a unique crossshoulder leather bag. Techniques of cutting, beveling and hand sewing high-quality oiled leather will be covered.

PERSONAL NARRATIVE SCULPTURES Sat & Sun, November 11 & 12 10am-5pm Instructor: Chelsea Arthur-Succop Level: all Work with a variety of mediums in this workshop designed to exercise creative habits. Through exploring manipulation and assemblage, participants will focus on making one-of-a-kind sculptures out of found materials.

Sustainable practices for the studio will also be discussed.

NATURAL EDGE BOWL Sat, September 9 10am-5pm Instructor: Linda Van Gehuchten Level: all Students will create a beautiful turned bowl with a natural edge and mineral oil finish. Some previous turning experience is recommended.

BOOK-MATCHED SERVING BOARD & WOODEN SPREAD KNIFE Sat, October 14 10am-5pm Instructor: Zak Kruszynski Level: all Make a one of a kind bookmatched wooden serving board with inlay and wooden spread knife! Students will develop an understanding of basic characteristics of wood and woodworking fundamentals including simple joints, panel glue-up, and basic wooden inlay techniques, as well as shaping with a sander.

FIRE WRITING Sat, December 2 10am-5pm Instructor: Dave Betler Level: all Pyrography – “Pyro” in Latin means fire and “Graphy” is loosely translated as writing. In this class, students will learn to write on wood using low-temp electric pens. Techniques used to create color will also be discussed.

SUSTAINABLE JEWELRY FROM TIN CANS Sat, October 7 10am-5pm Instructor: Bryan Peterson Level: all Design your own wearable, sustainable jewelry from your favorite found and vintage tins.

Learn sizing, pattern making, metal forming and low temp soldering in this one-day class. Leave the class with the knowledge to continue making recycled wearables with the purchase of a few simple tools.

Tuition: $100 Materials: $10

8 SESSION GUIDED OPEN METALS STUDIO Thur, September 7, 14, 21, 28 & October 5, 12, 19, 26 12am-3pm Instructor: Melissa Davenport Level: all Would you like to learn something new, refine current metal skills, or explore new solutions? Students will learn a variety of techniques designed to help them with their personal projects including soldering, ring making, and problem solving tactics. Register for one class or the full eight-week session.

Tuition: $30 per session Materials: $5 HANDMADE CHAINS Sat, October 14 10am-5pm Instructor: Katie Rearick Level: all Students will be introduced to a variety of designs and techniques to make chains and explore clasp designs. Participants will learn the basics of sawing, filing, annealing, soldering and forming. Surface design and finishing techniques will also be taught. This workshop is suited for students of all levels.

METAL

TEXTURE, FORM & COLOR ON METAL Sat, October 28 10am-5pm Instructor: Adrienne Grafton Level: all In this class, students will learn to apply texture on metal using the roller printing process.

Participants will create their own plexi die and form metal with the hydraulic press. Color will be added with vitreous enameling to create a finished product.

Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

SILVER RING MAKING Sat, November 18 10am-5pm Instructor: Jim BovĂŠ Level: all Learn how to make a sterling silver ring. Students will learn how to size and use texturing and stamping tools. Soldering, filing and polishing will also be covered as well as a brief stone-setting lesson. Participants are welcome to make as many rings as they desire in class.

Tuition: $80 Materials: $5 lab fee, plus $1035, depending on materials used.

INTRO TO ENAMELING Sat, December 9 10am-5pm Instructor: Jenny Butterfield Level: all Experiment with the versatile process of enameling! During this workshop, students will learn the basics of fusing colored glass enamels to metal while exploring a variety of surface effects and techniques. Each participant will have the opportunity to produce a finished piece of jewelry.

Tuition: $80 Materials: $25

SPECIAL TOPICS 9 METALS BENCH RENTALS

Take advantage of CC’s new bench rental program. Rentals include a locked bench, locker, and use of the metals studio when workshops are not in session.

PERSONALIZED CRANKIES Sat, September 16 10am-5pm Instructor: Katy Dement Level: all View a full sized crankie in action, then create a short story scroll within a personal decorative box. A variety of illustration techniques such as silhouettes, shadow puppets, and black walnut inking will be explored. Please bring a short song, story, or poem that you would like to tell.

FIND “SHELTER”: WRITE YOUR WAY HOME, PART 1 Sat, September 16, 23, 30 & October 7 10am-12pm Instructor: Shelia Kelly Level: all SHELTER RELATED ACTIVITY Students will engage with CC’s exhibition, Shelter: Crafting a Safe Home, and bring the artworks to life with words that engage their visions, dreams, and life questions. There will be an opportunity for students to read work in a group setting if desired. All genres and writing levels are welcome!

FIND “SHELTER”: WRITE YOUR WAY HOME, PART 2 Sat, November 4, 11, 18 & December 2 10am-12pm Instructors: Laurie McMillan & Shelia Kelly Level: all SHELTER RELATED ACTIVITY Continue work begun in the first “Find Shelter” workshop. Students will compose and share in class and write about images from the exhibition artworks. There will be an opportunity for students to read their work December 2, 2017. EMBOSSED & EMBELLISHED Sat, October 28 11:30 am-4pm Instructor: Katy Dement Level: all Students will learn a variety of surface design techniques including embossing, watermarking, and embedding.

With a focus on texture, and composition, students will explore the “wet on wet” collage technique that incorporates plant materials and vintage ephemera from home.

INTRODUCTION TO POPUP BOOK STRUCTURES Sat & Sun, December 2 & 3 10am-5pm Instructor: Colette Fu Level: all In this intensive workshop, participants will learn the basic elements of pop-up paper engineering, and alternative techniques to create complex structures. Students will master how to incorporate their own art into their structures and effectively create unique popup books, cards, and works of art. All levels welcome.

SUSTAINABLE COSTUME ACCESSORIES Fri, October 13 6-9pm Instructor: Ashley Andrews Level: all Don’t let Halloween “creep” up on you! Enjoy this night of endless reclaimed materials and space to work on accessories for your costume. Explore basic hand sewing, costume design, and fabrication!

POETIC WAX Fri, November 3 6-9pm Instructor: Katy Dement Level: all Discover the ancient art of painting with melted wax!

Encaustics come to life when heat is added in new and surprising ways! Students will explore color, texture and depth on wood panels and paint or print with melted crayons to create rust belt landscapes or embed vintage imagery.

Tuition: $35 includes all materials and two complimentary beverages.

UGLY SWEATERS Fri, December 1 6-9pm Instructor: Jhenny Adams Level: all Come and make your own unique, festive sweater and be the envy of your holiday party.

Students will learn iron-on appliqué techniques and basic embroidery skills. You bring the sweaters; we’ll bring the beer!

Tuition: $35 Materials: Students provide sweaters to use as a base for embellishment. All other materials and two complimentary beverages included!

HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS Fri, December 15 6-9pm Instructor: Katie Rearick Level: all Saw, hammer, and finish your own uniquely designed metal ornament in this evening workshop! All levels welcome; basic skills will be taught.

OPEN STUDIOS

Have some studio experience under your belt? Use CC’s studios to work on your own independent wood, metal, and mixed media craft projects. A variety of tools and equipment will be available during the four weekly sessions.

Wednesdays, open until 7pm.

Class and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before start date. If a class must be canceled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.

Instructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

1-2 Day Workshops

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.

• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a confirmation e-mail within seven days.

• It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class on the correct day and time without additional notice.

• Students’ photos may appear in CC’s promotional materials.

• CC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of courses as announced in the catalog, however, CC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

Cancellations, 14 or more days notice: A student may cancel a registration for a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee.

Cancellations, fewer than 14 days notice: If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a 3, 4 or 5 day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee.

There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALS Private lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.

LEAP Award Call for Entries Deadline: September 30, 2017

Lydon Emerging Artist Program (LEAP) recognizes exceptional emerging talents in the contemporary craft field. The LEAP winner receives a $1,000 cash prize and their artwork is featured in The Store for one year. In addition, six finalists will have their work highlighted throughout 2018. Shelter is universally identified as a basic human right, yet refuge and protection is out of reach for millions. How does lack of safety and security affect our psyche and ability to live and flourish? Shelter features artistic responses to issues of shelter—global and local, public and private.
