ContentAsia’s latest who’s who of streaming/online platforms in Asia covers 66 platforms in nine Asian markets (excluding Japan and Taiwan, which have at least 18 and which will be profiled in our new directory, The Big List 2017).
clear&presentdata Next time you run into Fetch TV boss, Scott Lorson, ask him for access to the platform’s TV Ratings app. And then be prepared to be amazed, not only at the level of transparency he is prepared to share (a wonder in itself given the prevalent Culture of Opaque among Asia’s video platforms), but at the real-time insights into viewer habits. If you ask nicely, he may also let you see the access-plus version, which breaks down the data even more finely. Why am I telling you this? (a) because it’s real info, and I would choose real info over red roses any day; (b) because it’s really useful for programme providers; and (c) because it shows, in real time, that live free-to-air linear viewing was about 40% (41.7% on 70,157 active boxes at 12:35:31PM Singapore time on Saturday, 29 October 2016) of the activity through all boxes in Australia. Ondemand at the same time was 29.5% (all boxes, 27.9% on Fetch boxes only) and subscription TV was 28.6% (32.4% on Fetch boxes only). A random check on Sunday night at 9.40pm, live free-TV was 55.7% of 81,127 active boxes, live subscription was 18.6% and on-demand was 25.5%. They key point I’m making is that free/subscription linear takes the lion’s share of viewing; dig around the Fetch TV Ratings app and you will find times that free-TV has gone to 60% of the total audience. [Ed’s note: I would, if I could, look at data

of other platforms in other countries, but sadly they won’t share]. This linear-is-strong line may not be the sexiest position to take in a world where shiny new performers with magical stories and a strong customer-isking sensibility are commanding prime headline- and mind-space. But it’s real and it will last for as long as linear operators keep their game up. Some will. Some won’t, and you can be sure the ones who don’t will continue to blame the “environment” rather than their own lack of imagination/innovation/creativity/all of the above. What’s clear is that the video environment has moved beyond the either/

or. The new normal is all about everything, about giving viewers easy access to content they can and will watch above everything else at a price point they can afford. Clearly, a lot of platforms agree. At a moment of high disruption and digital dynamism, many we spoke to for our streaming special are expanding consumer touch points every way they can, including linear. And long may it last. Here’s who they are...
