Formats Outlook: 1H2021

Format commissions in Asia continue to drop, plummeting to 43% in the six months to end June compared to the same six months last year. ContentAsia’s ongoing Formats Outlook counted 124 formats on air or commissioned during 1H 2021, compared to 218 in 1H last year. Here’s a look at what else emerged in the latest research.

The number of formats commissioned or on air in Asia has fallen 43% in the first half of this year compared to last year, according to ContentAsia’s latest Formats Outlook. We’re blaming Covid-19 for much of the devastation, but it’s also difficult to ignore the gentle slide in volume that preceeded the pandemic every year for the last four years. The drop in volume from 2017 to first half 2021 was 56%; that’s 161 fewer formats this year than we counted four years ago. The good news is that interest in scripted formats has never been higher, driven mostly by streaming platforms fastracking time to screen, and India has overtaken traditional leaders such as Thailand and Vietnam as the top formats market by volume. India, which mostly ranked third/fourth the last four years, had 23 titles/seasons aired/commissioned for the first six month of this year.

1H 2017: Vietnam 1H 2018: Thailand 1H 2019: Thailand 1H 2020: Vietnam 1H 2021: India

The country was also almost consistent, only slightly down from 2020’s 24 and 2019’s 23 (see table). On average, India had about 24 titles in the first six months of 2017-2021. 4
