Trends & Outlook 2022

Individual territories will continue to step up on their acquisition of first-run international content now that former big pan-regional pay-TV players... are more focused on expanding their OTT services. We foresee increased appetite for formats amongst Asian and regional OTT players moving beyond scripted and venture more into nonscripted and reality titles. Technology and innovation will provide unique opportunities to grow digital presence and revenues for our localised formats in the region.”

Across Asia, Fremantle distributes formats and finished tape in all genres – Drama & Film, Documentaries and Entertainment.

Original Production/Co-Production

All of Fremantle’s formats, including our biggest entertainment shows, are licensed across Asia. Despite the complexities of producing in 2021, Fremantle delivered an outstanding success with China’s Got Talent on both Jiangsu TV and Tiktok, with over 890 million views across the series. Negotiated and produced during the height of the coronavirus outbreak in China, it was a testament to the strength and resoluteness of the Chinese market.

Partnerships

Fremantle has many partnerships across the region, where broadcasters license finished content as well as formats. Fremantle is moving into high-end factual production and is looking to partner with Asian platforms to co-produce and cooperate on such projects.

Top shows are…

Like Me, I’m Famous!

Like Me, I’m Famous! is the gripping next-generation reality show where popularity is everything. But here, there are no adoring fans. No social media kudos. No fancy editing apps. Successful influencers are placed into the ultimate in-real-life popularity contest, far away from the glamour of their digital worlds. Relying solely on their ability to win friends and influence people, they battle through physical and mental tests to win immunity from elimination by bagging enough ‘likes’ from their peers. Can the influencers really stay likeable 24/7 when the game is this personal? Genre: Formats

The Responder

The Responder follows Chris (Martin Freeman, The Hobbit; Sherlock; Breeders; Fargo), a crisis-stricken, morally compromised, unconventional urgent response officer tackling a series of night shifts on the beat. Whilst trying to keep his head above water both personally and professionally, Chris is forced to take on a new rookie partner Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo, Unsaid Stories; Timewasters; The Capture). Both soon discover that survival in this high pressure, relentless, night-time world will depend on them either helping or destroying each other. Genre: Drama. Episodes/length: 6x60 mins

Patagonia

Exploring the most extraordinary region on the planet, this prestigious documentary series celebrates the diversity of landscapes, exuberance of wildlife and fascinating human stories spread across more than a million square kilometres at Earth’s final frontier: Patagonia. Over six stunning episodes, expert local crews join an international team of the world’s best wildlife filmmakers to explore uncharted territory, discover new species and tell an urgent environmental story. Genre: Factual. Episodes/length: 6x60 mins
