Welcome to the Maltese islands!

I

recently came across a Maltese proverb which just about sums up the beauty of the beginning of summer – ma’ Ġunju, il-ġurnata titwal u s-siġra titqal (loosely translated to Come June, the day becomes longer and the tree heavier).

I simply love this time of year – the longer days allow us to fit so much more into the day and the sunshine breathes life into everything we do, while the countryside is still lush and the trees are laden with a wonderful variety of sun-ripened fruit. During your stay I suggest you buy some local fruit to savour the genuine flavours of the Mediterranean and that you make the most of the long days… and nights!

CA L E N DAR OF E V E N T S 2 0 1 4 JUNE 01 June Hedkandi Sundays Launch – Hedkandi, one of the biggest house music brands on the planet, has landed in Malta, now forming part of Hedkandi’s global residency circuit. Every Sunday, throughout the summer months, Hugo’s Terrace (the chosen venue for all 18 events), on the outskirts of Malta’s entertainment hub and flanked by St George’s Bay, will feature Hedkandi’s most exciting international line-up, supported by some of their hottest local DJs and dancers. 01, 08, 15 June In Guardia Parade – The In Guardia Parade is a re-enactment that portrays an authentic event that took place regularly inside important military fortifications in Malta and Gozo. During the re-enactment, the soldiers and knights of the fort’s garrison – some 55 re-enactors – are kitted-out in their finest uniforms and perform a military drill demonstrating to the Grand Bailiff the garrison’s state of readiness in the event of a military threat. The show starts at 11am and lasts 45 minutes.

Malta – The Great Story of a Small Island-Nation Through 100 Objects – Explore the history of Malta from its geological formation, 35 million years ago, to the more recent EU accession through 100 objects. The story is told almost exclusively through objects: artefacts – things that humans have made and ecofacts – things found in nature. 07 June Sette Giugno – On the 7th June every year, Malta commemorates the tragic events of 7th June 1919 known as the Sette Giugno. This is in remembrance of the riots of 1919 when the Maltese people revolted against the British administration and demanded some form of representative government for the island.

Four people died on that fateful day. A commemorative ceremony will be held at St George’s Square in Valletta organised by the National Festivities Committee. A similar commemoration will take place in Xaghra, Gozo. www.maltaculture.com

21 June Reflex ‘80s Party – For those who grew up in the 1980s, singing to Duran Duran’s Wild Boys or Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, and miss going to 1980s discos and dancing to Madonna and Depeche Mode, Reflex Party is the answer. Venue: Gianpula, limits of Rabat. www.reflexmalta.com

25 June Isle of MTV Malta Special – The annual Isle of MTV music event in Malta is an MTV Networks International (MTVNI) production. A world class line-up of artists will play in a free live concert on the Granaries in Floriana in front of a crowd which annually tops the 50,000 mark.

28-29 June L-Imnarja – This feast is one of the oldest to be celebrated in Malta, commemorating two important saints in Maltese religious lore, St Peter and St Paul. This feast has somewhat moved away from the traditional village festa style and has developed a different type of merriment, held in Buskett Gardens on the eve of June 29. Liturgical services are held in the Mdina Cathedral. In the late afternoon, numerous horse and donkey races are organised in a country lane situated just below and at some distance from Mdina. www.maltaculture.com

14 July-02 August Malta Arts Festival – The ninth of this festival will feature, among others, a video opera where film and reality mirror each other mysteriously, a circus which brings together poetry and humour, and a film festival under the stars. This year, artists from Croatia, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, South Africa and Russia will join some of the best Maltese artists in a festival with 18 performances and a separate programme of workshops and master classes. Most of these events will be held in some of the island’s most prestigious historical venues, such as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Pjazza Teatru Rjal and the newlyrestored Fort St Elmo, bringing a layer of history to the festival’s already rich narrative. www.maltaartsfestival.org

Malta Jazz Festival – Now in its 24th edition, the Malta Jazz Festival has helped raise the profile of jazz locally from a fringe festival to one of the most-awaited musical events in Malta’s artistic and cultural calendar. Organised in the open-air setting of Ta’ Liesse, contemporary music comes together with a sense of history, setting the backdrop for high-calibre performances.

25 July-03 August The Farsons Great Beer Festival – With over 13 bars, 60 draught installations and 14 local and international awardwinning beer brands, the Farsons Beer Festival, Malta’s largest outdoor event of the year, is truly a celebration of the best beers on the island. This year’s edition promises another 10 days of the best in local and international awardwinning beers and Malta’s best line-up of musicians and artists. here is far more to the Maltese islands than beautiful beaches and endless sunshine – although we can never get enough of both. Martina Said rounds up a varied list of the top 10 events to attend over the next two months, which should certainly make it to your to-do list while holidaying in Malta.

➓ 10. Café del Mar This popular hotspot is relatively new to Malta’s clubbing scene, having only opened its doors to the public last year. However, it ticks all the boxes for a great afternoon and night out – gorgeous views of St Paul’s islands, a crystal-clear infinity pool to party and dance around with a cocktail in hand, and an all-round great summer vibe. As the afternoon heat begins to subside and the sun starts to set, the Café del Mar Afternoon Live Sessions gain momentum. A live DJ gets the crowd going every Sunday, starting from 3pm till late at night, for the whole summer season, making Sunday afternoons that much more adventurous and exciting, somewhat redefining the term ‘lazy Sundays’.

9. Patches Market For a truly authentic artisan market, you needn’t look any further than Patches Market. This one-day event showcases some of the best local talented artisans around and the products they create by hand are available for purchase, such as jewellery items, home ornaments, wearable items as well as authentic food. The event is made that much more unique thanks to its location – held at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, one can enjoy a stroll through the gardens while observing the items on display and catching sight of the stunning view of Malta’s Grand Harbour as well as the old cities of Isla and Birgu.

The event will take place on 27th July from mid-afternoon to late evening.

Earth Garden This three-day festival is one-of-a-kind – it voices care for the environment through the arts, music and culture in a holistic way, also teaming up with the Environment Ministry to come up with this year’s theme, Our Environment, Your Wellbeing. Held between 6th and 8th June at Ta’ Qali National Park, Earth Garden celebrates innovation and creativity, whereby a host of artists and performers come together to share in the experience of living in harmony with the environment around them. Be sure to stroll around the Open Village, which is the heart of Earth Garden, and visit the ethnic garden, jamming area, holistic area, the Smiley Fun Park and Moroccan Shisha chill-out area. 7. Kinemastik International Short Film Festival The Kinemastik International Short Film Festival (KISFF), now in its 10th year, is the culmination of a year-round cultural programme based around film screenings, talks, exhibitions and concerts related to the world of film and cinema. NGO Kinemastik collaborates with international festivals and filmmakers to bring to the island a selection of incredible film directors, also helping to link up-and-coming Maltese filmmakers to the world of cinema. The festival will end with the official international short film competition, on 26th and 27th July at several venues around Malta, with the highlight being the open-air screenings held at the Valletta and Floriana bastions, overlooking the Grand Harbour. 6. Sliema Street Art Festival For one exciting weekend in July, between the 18th and 20th, the Sliema promenade is transformed into a colourful canvas that celebrates the talent of a number of local and international street artists. A variety of installations, blank canvases and easels are set up along the promenade inviting artists to let their imagination run wild, and the resulting artworks remain on display for the rest of the summer. This year marks the second edition of this festival – although still in its infancy, it attracts scores of visitors eager to witness true creative geniuses in action. Among the impressive list of guest artists are MTO, French artist Antoine Stevens, Telmo Miel, Steve Locatelli and Smates. Live painting, live musicians, food, dance and entertainment make this festival a true celebration of art and creativity, and surely one to attend.

5. Bedouin Bar If you’re after a stylish do on a Friday night, Bedouin Bar at the Westin Dragonara Resort in St Julian’s might be just the right spot. By day, it forms part of the Reef Club Lido, and members can lounge around and work on topping up their tans. By night, however, it transforms into a chill-out bar where guests can either kick back and enjoy a drink or two by the water’s edge, or hang up their heels and dance the night away to the music set of a renowned DJ. Hosted by Privé, the bar’s unique seaside location makes it immensely popular during the summer months, and attracts just the right crowds who know how to enjoy their Friday nights. Bedouin Bar opens at 10pm till the early hours until mid-September, weather permitting.

4. Malta Jazz Festival For jazz aficionados, this festival is a dream, although the spectrum of artists performing at the event could certainly be enjoyed and appreciated by most music lovers. This year marks the 24th edition of the Malta Jazz Festival, a three-day event held between 17th and 19th July, hosted within the open-air setting of Ta’ Liesse in Valletta, which provides a stunning historic backdrop for contemporary music. This festival has played a significant role in raising the profile of jazz music at a local level, and this year, musicians will be raising the bar even further by intersecting jazz music with other music genres. One of the most hotly anticipated performances, for instance, is that of Mehliana, featuring Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana, mixing jazz with electronica, creating tranceladen music. ➌ 3. Isle of MTV This is without doubt one of the most popular and energetic events of the year. Now approaching its eight successive year being held in Malta, the Isle of MTV open-air music concert draws crowds in the thousands each time, and entertains locals and tourists of all ages with a fantastic line-up of world-renowned music stars. Previous editions included performances by Rita Ora, Jesse J, David Guetta and Lady Gaga, and were filmed by MTV and broadcast a month later across over 20 MTV channels throughout Europe.

It will be worth your while to think ahead and beat the crowd in order to secure a spot that is not too far away from the stage. Farsons Great Beer Festival The beer festival has been a fixture in our calendars for many years, and continues to be as popular as ever. Held over 10 days at Ta’ Qali grounds, this festival is probably one of the most diverse and suitable for people of all ages and interests, and makes for a great family outing too. A host of talented local musicians and artists entertains crowds which flock to one of the different stages of their liking, while enjoying a refreshing beer from the Cisk range, including 18

1. Malta Arts Festival The Arts Festival is possibly one of the largest and widest arts-related events held on the island, during which a range of local and international artists perform side by side, enhancing local artistic development on the islands.

The festival’s programme is incredibly diverse, so there’s sure to be one display or other that appeals to the culture vulture in you, including dance shows, theatre productions and music ensembles. This event, which will be held between 14th July and 3rd August, is a highlight in Malta’s cultural calendar – seeing as it takes place in summer, it enables most performances to be held outdoors, and a number of unused or exclusive venues are opened up especially for this event, such as Argotti Gardens in Floriana. Whether you’re the sort of traveller who bounds out of bed at the crack of dawn eager to hunt down an adventure, or the type who likes to laze in bed until the afternoon and then see where the rest of the day takes you, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Malta.

You see, despite its modest size, Malta is a treasure trove of options for enthusiastic holidaymakers.

For starters, no summer holiday here is complete without a jaunt out to sea, and it’s your call whether you take the ‘relaxation’ or ‘all-action’ route. If you do fancy injecting a fast-paced adventure into your holiday, then check out which water sports are offered at your hotel or the nearest lido.

Of course the history trail is also a must. Get your energy with breakfast in Sliema, and then take the ferry over to Valletta to start your tour here. Wander through the backstreets and pop into the museums on the way (our favourites include the Grandmaster’s Palace and the Museum of Archaeology), before heading down

(via the Barrakka lift) for lunch on the waterfront. Then, take a dinky boat over to the Three Cities, where you can meander through the back streets and stop by the Inquisitor’s Palace, or just stroll along the marina and take snap shots of the super yachts.

Finally, be sure to set aside some time in Gozo. Malta’s littler sister island is bursting with charm and opportunities, and it’s worth

spending a whole day here, or even more.

Jump aboard an open-top bus to get your bearings and stop by the sites that interest you most – we recommend the prehistoric temples, the shrine and church of Ta’ Pinu and the Azure Window.

After all that activity, nothing beats watching the sun set over Ramla Bay, or heading for a dinner of freshly-catch seafood in picturesque Xlendi or Mġarr Bays. ➜

I love to while away a few hours listening to music and watching the sun set here, followed by a noisy dinner with friends nearby.

Francesca Balzan is the well-known curator of the Palazzo Falson museum in Mdina, as well as an author and historian. Here she shares her tips for your time in Malta.

Which is your favourite spot in Malta?

I love to spend time at the Biblioteka in Valletta and pouring through its vast archive. Researching there feels like taking a trip on a time machine.

I usually stop for a breather and go for a quick caffeine fix at the coffee shop across the square. The few metres that cover the Biblioteka to that coffee shop represent bliss to me.

What is your favourite summer activity?

It is hard to top an evening swim in Għajn Tuffieħa, in the north.

Which is your must-see historical space?

The temples of Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra are just perfection. The walk

the sun set and then hanging out until early morning. It’s absolutely beautiful.

Where do you head to for a good night out?

Although I am no longer a fan of big clubs there are some great venues in Paceville and further afield. Nowadays I prefer Muddy Waters, a laidback bar on the edge of St Julian’s.

Which is your must-taste local dish?

Grilled swordfish, definitely.

What would be your insider tip?

Mingle with the locals. The true gems that we have to offer won’t be found on your average tourist route.

Now in its 24th edition, the Malta Jazz Festival has become one of the most-awaited musical events in Malta’s artistic and cultural calendar.

Running from 17th to 19th July in Valletta, in the open-air setting of Ta’ Liesse – where the Grand Harbour bastions meet the sea – contemporary music comes together with a sense of history, setting the backdrop for highcalibre performances which delight jazz aficionados and lay persons alike.

This, however, is only one of the many intersections running through this year’s festival. Another is that created by the musicians themselves as they cross jazz with other types of music.

Mehliana (featuring Brad Mehldau and Mark Guiliana), for instance – which is set to be one of the festival’s hottest

tickets – mix jazz with electronica to create a trance-laden music while the French-born musician Laurent Coq combines Caribbean/Creole influences with modern jazz piano in his Laurent Coq Dialogue Trio.

Other rising stars include vibraphonist Warren Wolf and Kneebody, a band which crosses genres with ease. Tom Harrell with Colors of a Dream and the Brecker Brothers Band Reunion will also be gracing the stage at The Malta Jazz Festival. Local talent will be represented by Paul Abela Quintet featuring Gabriele Comeglio on Thursday 17th, Joseph Camilleri Trio and Dominic Galea Trio on Friday 18th, and Francesca Galea on Saturday 19th.

Tickets for the Malta Jazz Festival 2014 cost €30 for a single-day ticket (seated) or €75 for a three-day block ticket (seated). Standing single-day tickets are also available for €20 (free seating available) while a three-day block ticket (standing) can be bought for €40 (free seating available).

Running from 14th July to 2nd August, artists from Croatia, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, South Africa and Russia will join some of the best Maltese artists in a festival with 18 performances and a separate programme of workshops and master classes.

Most of these events will be held in some of the island’s most prestigious historical venues such as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Pjazza Teatru Rjal and the newly-restored Fort St Elmo, bringing a layer of history to the festival’s already rich narrative.

Palazzo Falson An extraordinary collection of art and antiques, ranging from paintings to furniture, silver, armour, jewellery, coins and more is displayed in this house.

The collection was put together by the palazzo’s most recent owner and resident, Captain Olof Frederick Gollcher OBE (1889-1962) who was an artist, philanthropist and avid collector.

This ancient palazzo, situated on Villegaignon Street just off Cathedral Square, is open to the public all week except Mondays up till 5pm (last entries at 4pm).

The facilities include audio guides (in a choice of six languages), a scenic roof-top cafĂŠ and a gift shop.

Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum in Mdina is the only Mdina home open to the public. It is one of the oldest medieval buildings still standing in Mdina, with origins dating back to the 13th century.

arah Micallef learns how sometimes, objects can be the best storytellers, giving insight into the reality from which they originate – the premise behind Heritage Malta’s current exhibition: ‘Malta, the great story of a small island-nation through 100 objects’.

Heritage Malta’s exhibition, ‘Malta, the great story of a small island-nation through 100 objects’, inaugurated in March, presents a timeline of Malta’s history from geological inception to more recent major political achievements via a selection of representative artefacts.

Head of Curatorial Affairs Godwin Vella explains that although the exhibition was initially conceived as a way of celebrating Heritage

Malta’s 10th anniversary last year, a request from the Office of the Prime Minister led to its postponement. “We were requested to organise it as part of the national celebrations commemorating the four anniversaries in 2014 – Freedom Day, EU Accession, Independence Day and Republic Day. We decided to postpone by a few months and have it inaugurated for Freedom Day – 31st March.” ➜ 37

IDENTITY MALTA The emphasis of the exhibition, according to Mr Vella, is mainly insularity – Malta as being a small island within a prevailing insular context, the centre of the Mediterranean. The exhibition is divided into two main parts: the first showcasing the 100 objects proper, which runs until 1st February 2015, as well as a succession of small, temporary exhibitions which focus on the respective anniversaries. “The idea is to keep the exhibition going with something new, giving people a reason for a second and third visit, apart from the fact that, since the area covered is so extensive, it would have been overkill if we tried to squeeze everything in with the inauguration.”

succession following the arrival of the first Neolithic settlers right up until the concluding phase which deals with post-independent Malta.

“These 35 million years of history are represented by 100 objects.

The most interesting aspect of this exhibition is rather than taking out or putting on display the most spectacular or popular exhibits, we first set out the storyline, identified the 100 most salient and representative points of these 35 million years of history, and then identified an object to personify every aspect,” Mr Vella maintains.

The objects have been carefully selected from the National Collection, comprising works of art and exceptional memorabilia as well as documents and artefacts sourced from the Office of the Prime Minister, the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,

the Central Bank, the National Library, the Notarial Archives and the Akkademja tal-Malti.

Speaking about the way in which these objects are representative of Malta’s history, Mr Vella explains, “the object, more than telling a story, acts as a spark. It is personifying an event or important aspect of Maltese culture.

Objects can narrate different stories, and their appeal tends to vary with the viewer. The object represents a theme, and the viewer can actually enjoy the object and see what it stands for, going on to delve into more detail using a mix of interpretation modes – there is extensive use of audio-visuals and multi-lingual access to a website with further information. The idea is to make the object accessible in different ways, and to instil a sense of discovery and curiosity in the visitor to get to know that particular object better.” ➜

IDENTITY MALTA Moving on to the types of objects included within the exhibition, Mr Vella asserts that the mix is very varied, in terms of age as well as material, composition and the respective collections from which they came. “Apart from some of the most popular and representative objects, such as the Venus of Malta, the suit of armour of De Vallette, the George Cross, the medals awarded to the Maltese insurgents who participated in the two-year struggle against the French, and the Maltese flag that was used in the signing ceremony of Malta’s EU accession in 2004; we also have a number of other objects, like one of the skulls found in the Hypogeum which has never been on display, as well as very humble remains of carbonised broad beans which were retrieved from the cemetery layers of Ħal Tarxien Temples which are over 3,000 years old, as well as a tooth from one of the dwarf elephants that lived in Malta several thousand years ago during the ice ages.”

Pressed to pick his favourites, Mr Vella mentions the ‘mashrabiya’: “a stone superstructure which was put within the facades of buildings up until the late medieval and early modern period, though some examples still survive in the Maltese context today. These were extensions of windows, almost like the prototype of louver windows through which you can peep out without being seen from the street.”

Apart from this architectural feature, he is also particularly fond of a rather indicative late 18th century map of Malta: “it is quite peculiar, because apart from the map of Malta, it has a number of insets which include a view of Valletta and

Floriana and part of Fort St Angelo from the Birgu side, and another of the fortifications of the Grand Harbour area, as well as an inset of Victoria in Gozo. In just one map, you actually have the Maltese reality during the Knights of Malta period, which was divided into a very hectic cosmopolitan harbour versus a very backwater rural, quiet land – this reality is portrayed in a single object.”

Eight more international awards for Delicata wines

In the last few months, Delicata have received eight more international awards for their wines from wine competitions held in Verona, London and Bordeaux, bringing the winemakers’ total medal count up to an impressive 92 awards.

The wines awarded are the 2013 Gran Cavalier Sauvignon Blanc D.O.K. Malta which has won two bronze medals at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) and the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) held in London, and a Gran Menzione at the Concorso Enologico Internazionale in Verona, Italy.

The 2013 Medina Rosé Grenache picked up two awards – a bronze medal at the Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux, France, and a Commendation at the DWWA. Another I.G.T. Maltese Islands Rosé wine to pick up a Commendation at the IWC was the 2013 Pjazza Regina Rosé made from a blend of Syrah and Carignan. Finally Delicata’s sweet liqueur wine 2012 Grand Vin de Hauteville

Moscato D.O.K. Malta wine picked up a bronze medal and a Commendation at the DWWA and the IWC respectively.

ritish nationals Tara Hayward and Darren Melton, who tied the knot in Malta on 10th May this year, share their memories with Guide Me. “We met back in 2001 when we were both young college students.

We started off as friends but a few years down the line our relationship flourished. We discovered that we shared many interests including travelling, wildlife and history.

“When we came to choose somewhere to get married we both knew that it wouldn’t be at home in the UK as we wanted a setting which was unique and breath-taking. We looked at many different countries and options but Malta had everything that appealed to us: stunning scenery, very friendly people and a lot of history.

Saying Gozo is an idyllic location is absolutely no exaggeration. It is actually more than just ideal – it is a precious gem that has retained much of its character and charm for many years. In fact, for Maltese and tourists alike, Gozo is a splendid escape from the ordinary routine of day-to-day life. It’s as though time stood still there for a number of years, preserving local traditions, natural wonders and a truly simple means of living.

One of the biggest attractions of this miniscule island is its remarkable natural beauty – it is predominantly made up of green hills and fields, but also surrounded by the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean. Whichever location in Gozo you choose to visit, you are never too far from the island’s mesmerising coast. It is therefore of little surprise that, earlier this year,

Trip Advisor ranked Gozo third among the top 10 islands in Europe, based on reviews and opinions of millions of travellers, preceding Santorini in Greece, Capri in Italy and Orkney Islands in Scotland.

All these factors combined, among others, have convinced many to purchase property in Gozo, albeit for different purposes. Gozo’s property offering is generous and varied, and while farmhouses and houses of character are widely sought-after and ever popular, they are not the only property options available.

Estate agent Frank Salt’s Gozo Branch Manager, Marie Grech, says the property market in Gozo is healthy and stable, with an ever-increasing interest in holiday homes, especially in several newly built apartments and residential complexes that are being sold at very attractive prices.

“Maltese nationals like to buy property in Gozo to have a holiday home, to get away from the hustle and bustle of Malta. Alternatively, they also buy property there as a buy-to-let investment, which offers very lucritave returns, particularly for short-term holiday rentals. Houses of character remain popular, offering a more rustic and colourful residence, with each being a unique architectural gem,” explains Ms Grech. ➜

“Foreigners, on the other hand, are mesmerised by the beauty and charm that Gozo offers, which becomes their favourite holiday home destination or even their retirement hotspot.”

The average price for a farmhouse with a pool is €300,000, although prices steadily escalate depending on the size and location of the farmhouse. One such property in the popular high-end village of Għarb, for instance, with a large swimming pool, ample deck area, a lounge and dining area, kitchen, four bedrooms and three en-suite bathrooms, a wine cellar and open sea and country views will set you back €750,000. You could, however, splurge even further – a 300-year-old farmhouse situated on the outskirts of Għarb, with a kitchen/ dining area, living room overlooking a pool, four bedrooms, two en-suite and another two bathrooms, a wine cellar, garage, storage room, garden and olive orchard, among several other features, hits the €1,000,000 mark.

“Seafront apartments and newly built developments, such as Ħal Sagħtrija and The Hillock are also available in Gozo – apartments with sea or country views start from around €175,000, while a good number of exclusive residences and villas are also available,” says Ms Grech. As with all property, the prices of apartments can keep on increasing.

One high standard apartment in the village of Żebbug, for instance, which 50

is fully furnished and includes three bedrooms, one en-suite, a bathroom, a large living and dining area, a kitchen and spectacular country and sea views, costs an impressive €407,999.

Are certain areas of Gozo more popular than others for purchasing property? “All of Gozo is good for buying property, because the sea and the countryside are never too far, and each village offers its own features and attractions,” explains Ms Grech.

“Victoria is the the capital of Gozo – it offers many tourist attractions and is considered to be the main retail and entertainment hub. Seaside apartments are very sought after in Marsalforn and Xlendi, due to their attractive seaside promenades.

Apartments and penthouses situated on hilly tops in Xagħra and Żebbug, on the other hand, offer breath-taking views of all of Gozo, although some of the loveliest farmhouses available can be found in the village cores of San Lawrenz, Għarb and Għasri.”

Patricia Piazzi together with her Italian husband, Giuseppe (pictured right), was first introduced to Gozo 22 years ago.

“My husband brought me here on a surprise weekend – while he was busy exploring and looking at property I was reading and relaxing. Little did I know that he was planning on purchasing a farmhouse located in the rural village of Munxar.

Giuseppe gradually restored the

farmhouse and only recently we added a new wing to our little haven.”

Patricia says the island’s slow pace enables one to forget about time, to rest and live in simplicity, which was always a luxury for the couple due to their frantic careers, encouraging them to settle down permanently on the island, which is where they now live.

“Gozo offered the peace and quiet we needed, people smile and are genuinely helpful, and it is safe too. At the same time, we are at the fingertips of Paris, Rome or Milan – it is a treasure.”

Asked about her experience of living in Gozo so far, Patricia says it’s been interesting and enchanting, although a little difficult at times. Marianne Day, a hotelier in Paris as well as a popular singer and songwriter in her native France, first visited Gozo with her husband, Franck Monbaylet, (pictured above), in May last year, and incidentally resided at Patricia’s guesthouse for the duration of their stay.

“We fell in love with the island,” says Marianne. “We came back in September and bought a house in Għarb. The first time we were back, Patricia and Giuseppe took us everywhere, and we

discovered lots of hidden places on the island, including great restaurants in Ta’ Ċenċ, Mġarr Ix-Xini and Xlendi.

We returned many times since.”

She says there are lots of things about Gozo that delight her, one of the main ones being the people.

“People in Gozo are very helpful – it’s not easy when you buy a house on an island you know very little about, including the language. But everything is so easy here; even the person who sold us our house made it all very easy – it’s been lovely.”

hoosing and cooking the right fish to eat, be it at home or in a restaurant, is not always the easiest of tasks.

Martina Said discusses summer fish, cooking tips and restaurant tricks with chef David Darmanin.

There is way more to summer cooking than barbecued meat and sausages. For the most part – in a bid to get through long, sweltering days without slowing down and overheating – we opt for lighter and fresher meals, just as we do with our clothes. One of the best sources of food that fits the bill is, without doubt, fresh fish or seafood.

There is no better time to enjoy a tasty fish dish than during the summer months here, when the variety of available fresh fish

is absolutely fantastic. David Darmanin – a Maltese chef and former journalist now based in central Italy, where he works as a culinary consultant – says June and July are undoubtedly very special months of the year for foodies into locally sourced fish.

“The start of summer is a time when much of the tastiest fish peaks and also the time when sports fishermen get their boats back into the ➜ 73

water, therefore spiking availability and lowering prices,” explains David.

“My personal all-time favourite of this season is albacore (alongi) – an underrated, low-cost, pale-fleshed tuna which is among the ‘tenderest’ of its kind and price-range. Cooking it through would be a mortal sin, but eating it raw without knowing its provenance or freshness could be downright dumb and dangerous.

You’re likely to find other variants of tuna at this time of year: for marinating and searing go for bonito (plamtu) or amberkjack (aċċola).”

The barracuda or, as David puts it, “the so-ugly-it’s-cute carnivore king of the Med,” starts to show up on our plates again at this time of year. He says it seems very readily available in Maltese waters, and so will not send you on an environmental guilt trip if eaten young. “Then there’s swordfish of course, but we get that almost all year round. You could also splash out on dentex (denċi) or redbream (pagru) – but finding honest and locally sourced fish of this kind may need you to have deep and blind trust in your fishmonger, besides deep pockets.”

If you’ve got an affinity for fishing and could spend hours at

sea, you will likely also find groupers (ċerna), but David advises against capturing them, that is unless you are accompanied by an apnea diver who can tell a male grouper from a female one. “Reckless fishing could lead to a situation where our children won’t be able to enjoy grouper by the time they’re our age.” In fact, one’s approach to fishing at large should be an overall responsible one, he says.

“It’s high time we enforce and regulate.

With a Mediterranean fish stock that is depleting in alarming ways, we need to ensure that our ingredients are sourced and used sustainably – these days more than ever.

Local restaurants often provide a range of Maltese fish dishes. David recommends the dorado (lampuki) if you’re on the islands after the feast of

the Assumption of Our Lady on 15th August. “If you’re visiting earlier, you would probably find the quality of our different types of tuna superb and the price more than convenient compared to any place north of Sicily.” The secret to best savouring its flavours is to ask for your tuna not to be cooked through.

The various ways in which fish may be cooked makes it a truly versatile source of food and the way it is cooked really depends what you want out of the fish. David explains some fish are best grilled, others best baked or sautéed, stewed or even poached, although most fish can be cooked in as many ways as you like. “Your options are endless,” he says, “and the way we cut, prepare or marinate the fish could make it suitable for what you’re after.

The ultimate aim is to make fish taste delicious without applying violent temperatures to the core of the meat.”

For the less discerning restaurant customer who is simply after a pleasant, appetising plate of fish, and who is not adept at differentiating between fresh and not-so-fresh fish, choosing the best one from the variety on display may be a little tricky. There are certain characteristics to look out for which will likely improve your choice such as a shiny skin, bright red gills, flesh that bounces back when poked, shiny eyes and that fresh sea-smell.

tips In 2012, David left his Maltese-style restaurant in Birgu to accept an internship at Noma in Copenhagen – at the time ranking as the best restaurant in the world.

He is nostalgic of the island’s local quirks, pastizzi above all. Here he shares some tips for cooking fish.

Albacore – Make sure it’s super fresh or freeze it for a couple of days before getting your teeth into it. If you fish it yourself or know the fisherman, gut it on board and you should be OK to leave it for a couple of days to settle in a controlled and refrigerated environment before eating (especially if it’s a large one). Blast freezing it when clean would still be the safest option. Enjoy raw with a sprinkle of Gozo salt, finely-ground white pepper, a splash of lime and a bit of fresh marjoram, without overdoing it with the herb.

Barracuda – This fish is not one of those kinds that can be just seared and eaten. It must be cooked through, but overcooking it may make it rather inedible. My take on this is to section and fry it when it’s large, and oven-bake it in juices and under a lid when it’s still young, but watch your time and temperatures.

Swordfish – Cooking swordfish properly is not easy. It needs to be cooked through without going a second over.

It might take some practice, but we all get there eventually.

Malta’s largest outdoor festival

The Farsons Beer Festival is the largest outdoor beer and musical festival organised in Malta. A national calendar event, spanning a full 10 days, the open-air festival caters for all tastes and preferences, making it a great night out with family and friends.

Running into its 34th edition, the festival is set to take place at Malta’s National Park in Ta’ Qali from Friday, 25th July to Sunday, 3rd August, where locals and tourists can appreciate a variety of local, international and specialty beer brands, including the award-winning Cisk range of beers and Farsons’ classic brews, Hopleaf and Blue Label.

Malta’s biggest open air entertainment destination

A firm favourite with both locals and the thousands of tourists who visit the Maltese islands, Gianpula complex is the essence of Maltese nightlife. The ideal Mediterranean climate allows for this open air complex to be enjoyed during the extended summer months, and with a capacity of 7,000 people, the party masses certainly take advantage of this.

The complex comprises five venues – the Gianpula Main Room, Groove Gardens, Marrakech, The Roof Top and Gianpula Fields. The original building is an old farmhouse with extensive grounds spread over 30,000 square metres of land. alta’s after-dark calendar springs into action once summer starts, and there’s something for everyone! Here Jo Caruana takes a look at the must-attend events of the season.

What’s not to love about nightlife in the Mediterranean? All-day beach parties, sunset pools parties and late-night dancing under the stars.

And despite Malta’s ‘traditional’ reputation, the island is a great place to party. In fact, as our calendar of events highlights, it will be hard to beat the incredible line-up of events and performance that the Maltese islands have to offer over the next few weeks.

This particular event will kickstart 18 consecutive Sunday parties, with a line-up that includes Lucy Stone, as well as top local DJs and dancers. Organised by Privé, a company known for attracting a top-quality crowd, this is easily one of the island’s most sophisticated open-air nightclubs. Following on from the success of last summer’s run, Gringos is back with another incredible line-up of DJs, highprofile acts and parties. Held in the picturesque surroundings of Gianpula, this is the must-attend party to follow on from your Sunday by the sea. So far the organisers have stayed silent on what exactly we should expect, but this is definitely one to watch!

As part of the week-long Malta Music Festival, this event is held at one of the islands’ most popular outdoor venues. If you want to party with the locals, this is the place to do it, and a night at Gianpula promises a mix of the biggest dance tunes and dancefloor fillers, along with the latest dance cuts. Doors open at 11pm and close at

4am – at which point you should head straight to Crystal Palace (just outside Mdina) for a couple of late-night pastizzi (cheese- or pea-filled pastry parcels) and a cup of sweet tea. Remember to book your taxi ahead of time, too, as it will get very busy here.

Fancy discovering Gozo’s wild side?

Well, held at Gozo’s iconic club, La Grotta, and with the dramatic backdrop of the Xlendi Valley behind it, this is one special place to party. In fact, it is known to be one of the most beautiful open-air clubs in the Mediterranean. This event will feature Bo Bruce, as well as other top local DJs. Doors open at 10.30pm and tickets are €8. Check the ferry times before you head over by visiting the Gozo Channel website, or book overnight accommodation on the island so you can relax here the following day.

This stunning outdoor venue is celebrating its first anniversary, so expect an event with plenty of attitude! This bash is being organised by popular party people G7 Events, in collaboration with Sunglasses At Night. It will feature the French DJ duo Klingande (best known for the massive summer hit Jubel) as well as other local performers. This party starts at 4pm and will go on till 2am, so be sure to take your swimwear and sunhat (trust us: you will want to lounge by the infinity pool and enjoy the view). Tickets start from €20.

Isle of MTV has become synonymous with the Maltese summer. Held under the stars, last year’s crowd topped 50,000 people – all of whom were drawn by the incredible international line-up (and free entrance). Although this year’s stars, other than superstar DJ Hardwell, are yet to be announced, past performers have included Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, Flo Rida, Nelly Furtado, Enrique Iglesias, Black Eyed Peas and Jessie J. Make the most of this event by wearing comfy clothes and getting there as early as possible (some people start queuing at 6am, although 4pm is usually good enough by our standards). ➜

Expect an OTT Ibiza-style, pool party. This event is being held at one of Malta’s most sought-after and luxurious venues, with open views to pretty St Paul’s islands. It will be headlined by one of the biggest house DJs in the world - Dirty South. The crowd will be chic and international, with guests flying in from all over the world (thus making it a great networking opportunity as well as a brilliant party). The dress code is stylish – so bring that designer swimwear! Tickets start at €60 and rise to a whopping €4,000. Book early.

This is one of Malta’s top gay boat parties, and this year it’s set to be better than ever. The ‘boat’ part of the party will be held on the Tip Top One – a catamaran with a flat and shaded surface. To beat the success of last year, there will also be an after party in a private villa by the pool (between 6.30pm and 11pm) – the location will only be disclosed on the day. Be sure to book ahead as tickets are limited and demand is high.

This annual event may not be for the faint-hearted, but it is a treat for anyone with a genuine love of clubbing. The entertainment will be in the hands of local techno and electro legend Junior B, as well as other top Maltese DJs.

Malta has sometimes been described as ‘The Cradle of Civilisation’ on account of its many ancient Megalithic temples consisting of Ħaġar Qim, Ġgantija Temples, Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum, Mnajdra Temples, Skorba Temples, Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples and Tarxien Temples, to mention the best known examples. Indeed the temples at Ġgantija are among the oldest freestanding buildings in the world, dating to approximately 3,700BC. Granted, Malta’s appeal to many is its sunny temperate climes, crystal-clear blue seas, varied nightlife, delicious cuisine and friendly people. But for those who, like myself, are interested in history, Malta is a veritable trove of fascinating historical material.

See the imposing bastions which the legendary Knights of St John constructed to protect Malta’s ports and cities from attacks by the Ottoman Turks, the most furious of which came in 1565. Queen Elizabeth I remarked at the time: “if the Turks should prevail against the isle of Malta, it is uncertain what further peril might follow to the rest of Christendom.” Of course we know that the attack was successfully repelled, but the fear and anticipation that prevailed before the onslaught must have been almost tangible.
