“Watching my X Factor audition get over five million views left me speechless.”

ichela Pace strides into our photo-shoot with an air of confidence well beyond her years. She smiles broadly, introduces herself to the people she doesn’t know, and warmly embraces the ones that she does. Fresh from her return from Israel, she admits to being a little tired (although quite relaxed after a weekend in her beloved Gozo) but she’s enthused about the response to her performance and eager to keep up momentum. Of course this isn’t a journey that started with her X Factor win. Michela’s love for music can be traced back to when she was a very little girl, and she remembers going to choir practice with her mum when she was about three, before joining the choir herself at eight. “Music runs in the family,” she smiles. “My mum used to play the flute, my dad played the French horn, and my grandpa still plays the euphonium with a local band. I have played the piano on and off, and hope to start again soon – and I also just got a beautiful mintcoloured guitar which I can’t wait to start writing my own songs on.” But although Michela has always had an affinity for music, it wasn’t until X Factor that she decided to take it seriously. “It’s not that it didn’t occur to me before,” she says, “but working with the incredibly professional people around the production showed me what a wonderful sector it is, and made me think of music as a profession and a craft. I couldn’t believe what I had achieved in such a short time and knew I wanted to be part of that world.” Looking back, Michela says she was with a friend overseas when she first heard about the competition that would go on to change her life. “I thought she was joking at first,” she giggles. “But when I saw it was real I knew I had to enter, as I have always loved watching the international version of the show. I couldn’t believe there was going to be a local production and that a record contract was up for grabs.”
STYLE interview 15
Little did she know then that she was not only in with a chance of winning, but actually would. She breezed through many of the rounds – starting with the producers’ auditions and moving on to the judges’ auditions. “I think it was during those judges’ auditions that I first felt X Factor would be special,” she says. “It was quite a moment – singing in front of four professional people and seeing their positive reactions, as well as watching how my rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart moved Ira Losco to tears. To then have that video go viral with over five million views literally left me speechless!” Michela then moved into the Boot Camp round, which she says was the toughest part of all. “But I learnt the most from it,” she says. “And it gave me confidence for the Six Chair Challenge, and the Judges’ Houses round. I think it all helped prepare me to sing in front of Mike Hedges, one of the world’s top record producers, and eventually for the live shows, which were like nothing I had ever experienced.” All of this led to the nail-biting X Factor finale in which Michela was pitted against fellow finalist Owen Leuellen. “I approached that final round in the same way I approached every round,” she continues, “as if it were my last time on stage. Of course, this really was to be the last time, so I was determined to give it my all. Still, I couldn’t quite believe it when I heard my name called and I was announced as the winner. I was so overwhelmed but, of course, very happy. It hit me that all my hard work had finally paid off.” Winning X Factor was only one step into a major two-part journey for Michela – and that next step was to prepare for Eurovision. “We literally got cracking the next day!” she recalls. “I loved going through the various songs we could have sung and deciding on the staging. We all worked so hard, 24/7, so there was little room for over-thinking things. After a selection was made through a local and international jury, we settled on Chameleon as the song and shooting the video for it was a highlight – followed by watching it surpass millions of views. Oh, and sharing a bath with some real, live chameleons is likely to be something I won’t forget either!”

And with her next stop being the incredible Eurovision stage in Israel, things certainly haven’t calmed down since, in what has clearly been a non-stop year for the singer. “Our staging was one of the most complex in the competition this year, with multiple projectors, huge props, overlay graphics and the challenges of lighting vs projections. “Unfortunately, we faced a number of technical difficulties regarding sound, camera shots and lighting, so there was a lot to contend with. I also didn’t really expect them to forget to lock our main prop on stage, so it was moving about during the performance! That was a terrifying moment, and I can see from the video how pale and panicked I looked. It left me with a nagging feeling throughout the performance as I kept wondering what might go wrong next, and that did take away some of the fun. Still, that’s show business!” Nevertheless, Michela has nothing but love for her memories of this experience, especially when she considers how many talented people she got to meet from around the world, while watching them up their game and try their best. “It was inspiring,” she says. “But nothing could surpass that moment when I heard ‘Malta’ called in the semi-finals, securing our place in the finals. I thought I was going to have a heart attack!” And while the ultimate result didn’t reflect the general sentiment on social media and betting odds, (even though the European Broadcasting Union has since revised the final tallies and Chameleon went up two places in the ranking), Michela is on a high with the news that her first single was recently at Number Three in the Global Viral Spotify charts – a huge win for any performer. It certainly bodes well for all that is to come considering her first single has surpassed five million streams on Spotify and 12 million views on Youtube. “If I think back over the last year, I could never have dreamt this could happen to me and I have loved every moment of it. Now it’s time to shift focus, work on my new songs, and prepare for my next single and – hopefully – a full album. With everything that has happened, I am confident to say that things won’t stop here,” she adds with a smile. n

STYLE interview 21
Renowned stylist Carina Camille sadly lost her beloved dog Cody earlier this year, but soon found the courage to adopt another pup who needed rescuing from the sanctuary in Ghammieri. She introduces Doby the Doberman. “I wasn’t over Cody’s death when Doby came into my life. I was at Għammieri discussing a photoshoot to raise awareness for dogs to be adopted, and was taken around. I ended up in the recovery section when I saw him for the first time. He was depressed and not eating, walking or looking at anyone who spoke to him. I sat in his pen with him, with his face on the palm of my hand, and cried like a baby. I went home and spent 48 hours thinking about him and crying. “After that, I decided to foster him for the weekend while trying to find someone to adopt him. I took him home, then to the spa to get washed. Of course, after spending time with him (even though we had someone coming from Germany to see both him and a brown female Doberman who was also at Għammieri) I was reluctant to part with him and decided to keep him on the same day that the German lady arrived. She ended up adopting the brown female and I ended up keeping Doby! “I have to admit that I didn’t plan to get another dog but he found me, and now I absolutely love spending time with him. We go out for a walk three times a day, and he loves to play (whereas I prefer hanging out on the sofa cuddling him). He is a gentle giant and very chilled, so I take him everywhere and he is always well behaved.
CARINA & DOBY
PETER-JAN & SCOTT
Carina is dressed by Max Mara
“Having said that, it hasn’t all been plain sailing. Early on, he got hold of a brand new Max Mara coat I had just bought and ripped it apart. Then, when I bought a replacement, he did it all over again! Thankfully that one was saved by my dear friend Louise, and Doby has been forgiven. I forgive him for anything he does, really, as I love him dearly. “Dogs are always great company and that’s my favourite thing about Doby. I feel at peace when I am with him and believe having a dog makes me a better person. I would certainly recommend getting a dog, but it is so important to look into the breed you are thinking of adopting, and committing to taking care of them at all costs until they go over the rainbow bridge. Adapt as you would with a child because it is exactly the same thing.”
BRND WGN founder and outdoor fitness fanatic Peter-JAN Grech recently adopted Scott, who is still a puppy. He is named after ‘Scott of the Antarctic’ because his mum is a Huskie. “I originally wanted a Labrador because I think they are a fantastic breed, but we opted for a rescue dog and I am glad we did. We got Scott from the Noah’s Ark sanctuary and the kids fell in love with him. He was just three months old at the time. “I’ve never actually had a dog but always wanted one, and was sad not to be allowed one as a child. One day we dog-sat Kurt (Arrigo’s) dog Dazy and realised that having a dog suited us as a family, so we went ahead. Scott fits in with us because we’re outdoorsy. We have even found that our kids are less interested in electronics since he came into our lives.
“I consider the natural connection between humans and animals to be fascinating – there’s the companion side of things, and the fact they don’t judge you and are always willing to please. Scott is a work in progress because he is so timid and scared of everything, but he is getting better. He’s a fast runner, loves to climb and is always ahead of everyone on our hikes. He has blended right in! “If you are thinking of getting a dog, be sure to discuss it as a family and to spread the chores so everyone has some responsibility. Oh, and buy an extra sofa – if your pup is anything like ours, you are going to need it!”
22 STYLE interview
Justine Pergola’s Labrador Romeo is the ‘love of her life’. Brought over from Italy, he is now seven years old (and actually featured in a past issue of Style when he was just a puppy!). “I made friends with a stray Labrador when I was in Italy a few years ago and knew I had to get one of my own. I grew up with my mum’s Dachshunds, but my uncle always had bigger dogs – and I wanted a larger dog for myself. When I knew the breed I wanted, I researched breeders very carefully and found a good one in Tuscany. Romeo actually ran away from me the first time we met, however, once he was placed in my arms, I was in love. “I chose his name because I am a hopeless romantic and have been waiting for my Romeo for 40 years! Since he hasn’t shown up yet, I decided to name my dog Romeo. I love dogs in general for so many reasons – they give you unconditional love, are genuine, loyal and sensitive, and it is very
JUSTINE & ROMEO
MARILU & OLIVE
rare that they will turn against you. I admit I have an ‘over love’ for Romeo; he protects me, calms me and completes me. “Romeo’s favourite thing is to jump into the swimming pool or a puddle, although he’s also very cuddly and carries his blanket around with him. On the flip side, he does chew my shoes… and a few other things. I once had a few guests coming over for dinner and everything was prepared. I then turned my back for a few minutes to welcome them and returned to find all eight fillets had disappeared! That wasn’t a great day. “Nevertheless, the only thing I don’t love about having a dog is knowing they aren’t eternal. No one can give you as much love as they do.”
Marilu Vella, of Pastizzi Gourmet fame, had always wanted a Pharaoh Hound. She came across an advert of someone giving puppies away, and her husband, Sean, got Olive for her as a surprise. “When my previous dog, Popeye, passed away, I was devastated and vowed to call my next dog Popeye too – but since she was a girl, Olive (Oyl) worked better. “There is nothing better than coming home to your dog – they are always so happy to see you. If you get angry, they forget in a minute. I have an affinity for Pharaoh Hounds because they fit their nickname as the ‘cats of dogs’. Olive is very clean, loves cuddles and adores people. She’s so gentle, and sleeps next to me and my husband every night. “We have lots of fun together – going for walks, to my father’s field in Siggiewi, and going for
a run. She doesn’t have many bad habits, although she does bark a lot when she’s on her lead and spots another dog. “But I love everything about her, and the day we got her was one of the happiest of my life. She is a huge priority in my life and I am so lucky that my parents pet-sit when Sean and I travel, so I don’t have to worry about her so much. She’s a great companion. I recently had surgery and she sat next to me day after day as I recovered. Of course, the hardest thing about loving a dog so much, is knowing she won’t always be around. It’s heart-breaking!”

LUKE & BUTTONS
KURT & DAZY
SARA & ROYCE+ BENTLEY Actor and FM Theatre producer Luke Mercieca and his family adopted Buttons one festive season, and he has slowly inched his way into their hearts ever since. “Buttons first came into our lives on New Year’s Eve, when – as a family – we were involved in producing the pantomime Cinderella at the Manoel Theatre. When we found him wandering around near our house, we called a friend for advice, and she helped get him settled. We called him Buttons after the comic character in Cinderella, and it really suits him. “He’s got such a great character and is fantastic at cheering anyone up. When I get home, he is the only ‘person’ to show me some love and always makes me feel better. We sing together a lot – at the moment we’re practicing We Will Rock You ahead of our show at the Mediterranean Conference Centre later this year. Sadly, Buttons can’t actually take part… “He is quite a theatrical dog, though. As one of his worst habits, he sneaks pieces of material from our costume room and rips them apart. He also loves destroying tinsel – another common material used in a Christmas pantomime! “If you are thinking of getting a dog, then it will probably be one of the best decisions of your life. Just make sure to be there for them, because they deserve all the love in the world.”
Property entrepreneur Sara Grech has huge affection for dogs, and takes her three-year-old Shih Tzus Royce and Bentley everywhere with her. She is also Founder and President of the Service Dogs Malta Foundation.
Top photographer Kurt Arrigo, whose work was recently featured at the Oscars in LA, grew up with Labradors. Dazy has been part of the family since she was just a few weeks old, and is now seven.
“I have often had dogs in my life, and have missed them so much when they passed away – so much so that I didn’t think I would get another dog. But when my children left home a few years ago I thought the time was right – and it was. I adore these two, and they follow me wherever I go, from the office to overseas. “Originally I only planned to get one dog, but when I saw these two I fell in love and couldn’t decide. They’ve got such different characters, and are actually from different families, so I took them both! “My daughter has a Shih Tzu too, called Aston. So, in keeping with the car theme (and the fact I love cars) I followed suit and came up with Royce and Bentley. “I think the relationship between dogs and humans is very special, and I am in awe of the fact that we can somehow communicate without talking. They are obedient, careful and attentive, and they understand me to a tee. I just like hanging out with them, whether we’re on a walk or out to lunch. They always have their own order and usually have what I am having… so if it’s salmon for me, it’s salmon by three! They mean the world to me and I thrive on making them happy.”
“My kids were desperate to get a dog, and persisted and persisted. They had ideas for other breeds, but I thought to myself that if I was going to get a dog, I wanted it to be the type I was most familiar with. “We were given Dazy by a friend. She spent the first 12 weeks of her life with her mum, which is important for a puppy; dogs that get to stay with their mothers very early usually learn a lot from them and are calmer, which was great for us as a family. Of course, Labs are often like that as they are such a gentle breed. “I spend a lot of time with her outdoors, and it helps that she loves to swim. So she is with me by the sea and with my wife at the tennis club she runs; she’s actually the mascot there! Dazy loves doing tricks too – like rolling over, and has learnt to stay right by us even off the lead. That said, we did have one incident when she was younger and she ran off while my daughter was holding her, and ran my daughter into a glass door – thankfully no one was hurt. Today, the only thing I don’t absolutely adore about her is the fur she leaves behind!” n

H
aving burst onto the hairdressing scene nine years ago, hair stylist Karl Brincau has since become a household name to people from all walks of life – from business people to celebrities, from working mothers to fashionistas. At the salon, one can opt for basic haircuts and understated styles, or lean towards more elaborate hairstyles and hair treatments, such as different colouring techniques, extensions and complete hair makeovers. In relation to the latter, Brincau has become synonymous with more creative hair treatments, such as balayage, but is also well-known for cutting-edge haircuts for the more daring clients. At the same time, the salon offers hair services for special occasions, such as weddings. In fact, whatever the occasion, the Karl Brincau Salon is highly adaptable to the needs and wants of clients, satisfying and executing services efficiently and
creatively. Indeed, for the stylist Karl Brincau himself, the aim is to push the envelope of creativity and innovation. The ensuing styling looks are youthful, but can also be bold and daring, fun and vibrant. The techniques and products used for mixing colours are well-thought through, and the process is not incidental but carefully studied, so that client satisfaction is guaranteed. Clients can enjoy a custom-made service that is tailored to their tastes and ideas, while receiving expert advice from the stylist himself. Brincau suggests that the best way forward, especially where hair colour is concerned, is to start with an assessment of the hair’s condition and natural base colour, up to and including specific recommendations on a client-by-client basis, to ensure that hair care is safeguarded. While very much geared towards satisfying the client’s preferences, Brincau also provides a vision of what can be
done for the intended hair colour or treatment, both short- and longterm, which means that hair care tips post-hair treatment are proffered. On this note, the salon is well-stocked with products of the highest quality, all of which are sourced carefully by the stylist himself. Additionally, you can find interesting accessories, such as hairpieces, to diversify your look. The Karl Brincau salon, which officially opened its doors a year-anda-half ago, has been designed with a minimalist, Scandi-inspired décor in mind. Tastefully done, well-lit and boasting a spacious interior, the salon enables clients to feel comfortable immediately. The mood is predominantly professional, while the ambience offers clients an opportunity to unwind and escape from the fast-paced contemporary life beyond. For, at the Karl Brincau salon, it definitely feels like home. n

The one-stop concept beauty studio
DEA is a one-stop concept beauty studio, offering services ranging from customised facials to non-invasive treatments for clients of all ages.
“O
ur specialised team is here to share our expertise and give our best to our clients,” explains founder Denise Marston. The studio offers an extensive list of beauty services, including laser hair removal, semi-permanent make-up, eyelash extensions, professional makeup and make-up courses, nail and hair treatments, nutrition advice, massages from fully-qualified massage therapists, laser teeth whitening and spray tanning. DEA is particularly renowned for its custom facial programmes, which can combat anything from uneven skin, acne and scarring to ageing and fine wrinkles. “Our technology is laser-based with radio frequency. We also provide microneedling and pen, as well as the famous Red Carpet facial, using aqua gold needle and mesotherapy vials to nourish the skin from within. We try to provide facials
here that you couldn’t simply replicate at home,” Ms Marston explains. “We also provide information to our clients about home care – the treatment doesn’t simply stop once the client leaves the studio.” And when the standard beauty treatments are not enough for what the client needs, they can turn to Dr Giovanni Scornavacca, DEA’s friendly med-aesthetic doctor, who visits from Catania every two weeks and has over 20 years’ experience in his field. He specialises in non-invasive treatments for the face, such as peeling, Botox and hyaluronic acid to correct wrinkles, and micro-Botox, which is used by over-60s to lift the face without resorting to surgery. DEA’s services also include thread lifting, which can be used to revitalise the face and body. “Soft thread lifting can be done without local anaesthetic, while hard thread lifting requires some anaesthesia for the patient’s comfort,” Dr Scornavacca explains,
adding that changes become visible between a week-to-10 days after treatment, while the collagen stimulation lasts for two months. At DEA, Dr Scornavacca also offers body treatments such as mesotherapy – which uses chemical injections to destroy cellulite, and gives more oxygen to the tissue – and micro-lipocavitation, which uses ultrasound techniques on small areas of the body, destroying cellulite and burning fat immediately. The clinic is now planning to introduce other treatments, including advanced new treatments for skin laxity, especially for arms and knees, as well as Sculptra, an injectable cosmetic which restores shape and smoothness to parts of the body which are sagging and ageing. “Looking good is no longer a luxury these days, but a must,” Ms Marston says. “At DEA, we try to offer our clients the best and most efficient beauty services under one roof, at affordable prices.” n

Take a brow Beverly Hills-trained make-up artist Diandra Mattei takes us into the life-changing world of modern, natural-looking, permanent make-up.
W
hen you think of permanent make-up, chances are your mind immediately conjures up images of dark, blocky eyebrows and lip-liner that looks like it’s been drawn on with a marker. In fact, that’s the reason why so many people are still wary of permanent make-up to this day. But exaggerated eyebrows and cartoonish lips are trademarks of the old-fashioned way that, thankfully, seems to be going the way of the dodo. Modern permanent make-up can be used to make a woman’s face look better and more natural, rather than drawing attention to the make-up itself. Award-winning beauty guru Diandra Mattei, who trained with renowned eyebrow artists in Beverly Hills, offers her expert permanent make-up services from her salon in Swieqi. “In the last couple of years, permanent make-up has really evolved. Nowadays, it’s all about enhancing your features, and making it all look natural. You don’t want something to look like it doesn’t belong to you. If it looks fake, it’s failed – that’s the beauty of the art.” Diandra talks about the latest techniques to apply permanent make-up for your eyebrows. The first is microblading, where the beauty practitioner draws each individual eyebrow hair on by hand, stroke by stroke, using a hand-held tool. “The needles are very fine, so each stroke looks just like it’s your own hair.” However, microblading may not be suitable for everyone, particularly if you have sensitive skin, or oily skin, as the excess oil tends to blur the strokes. It may also not be an option if you have previous permanent make-up on, because old pigments tend to stick around. In this case, Diandra says, the other option is the ombré brow. “Ombré still provides a very natural look for your eyebrows. It’s darker on the bottom and on the tail, but the higher the eyebrow goes, the lighter it gets, hence the name. We can also combine ombré with microblading. The ombré procedure creates a full brow and makes hair look denser, while the microblading strokes make it look as natural as possible. It’s a beautiful result.” If you’re interested in a permanent make-up procedure, Diandra recommends booking a consultation first and foremost. Once the con-
sultation is carried out and the appropriate method is determined, it’s time to get those eyebrows on. The treatment takes a maximum of two hours, the longest part of which is the eyebrow design aspect. “I always work on bone structure, and try to work with the natural shape of the eyebrows, and until the client is 150 per cent convinced and happy with their look, we don’t do anything.” Diandra also says that she uses a numbing cream, so the nearest you’ll get to feeling pain is the sensation of tweezing. “Many of my clients are people who have lost their eyebrows over the years. The fact that they suddenly have eyebrows again after the treatment really gives their self-esteem a boost and makes them feel good about themselves. When a client looks at their new eyebrows and gives me a big hug – that’s the best part of my job,” Diandra smiles. Besides her marvellous permanent eyebrow make-up services, Diandra also offers another service in the salon – lip tints. “They’re not nearly as abrasive as the old-style lip tattoos. There’s very little trauma to the skin, so it’s practically pain-free. The beauty of this technique is that it’s not a very harsh look – it just provides a very soft, subtle glow to the lip, evening out the texture and the shape.” n
“If it looks fake, it’s failed – that’s the beauty of the art.”

San Anton School: from revolution to 30 years of achievement
The original San Anton School in Attard
Behind every successful venture lies a determination not to stop until the vision is brought to fruition. San Anton School, a leader in local education, is just such a venture. Dr Joe Gauci, Head of School, and Dr Max Ganado, Co-Founder of the Parents’ Foundation for Education and San Anton School, talk about what makes San Anton a 30-year feat. “Thirty years on, we are proud to say that our school’s pioneering efforts have changed the face of education in Malta,” says Dr Joe Gauci who, as Head of San Anton School, lives and breathes its revolutionary spirit. Set in Malta’s rural heart, San Anton has been a trailblazer in Maltese education since 1988. As the first in Malta to have adopted a holistic approach to teaching and learning, the school remains synonymous with
forward-thinking education on the island. True to its founding ethos, the school couples academic excellence with the development of independent thinking and the vital ability to articulate one’s thoughts and beliefs. “We place the student at the centre of education,” beams Dr Gauci. “Factors such as the co-ed setting all the way up to the end of secondary schooling, mixed-ability approaches to learning and an inclusive mind-

set were introduced locally by San Anton.” Learning for life is what the school is all about, emphasising broad-based curricula, goal-setting and authentic academic achievement over mere drilling to pass exams. When looking back at why the school was initially set up, it is easy to understand why this approach has developed. “Our country benefits when parents realise the importance of voluntary dedication to what’s important in life: our children’s future,” explains Dr Max Ganado. “Rather than focussing solely on stress-inducing exams, we wanted children to enjoy school and to learn by participating in as many activities as possible. We prioritised the multi-dimensional development of children and fostered a community spirit in learning.” Spearheaded by Dr Max Ganado and Notary Pierre Attard, the school started in 1988

San Anton alumni Many San Anton students have gone on to achieve success across a variety of spheres, including on non-traditional career paths, and within scientific, corporate and creative industries. “Our teachers’ commitment, engagement and enthusiasm at San Anton were instrumental in helping me develop the skills needed for a scientific career. Parents formed the non-profit, non-governmental movement after Maltese church schools introduced student selection by lottery. Contrary to the lottery system and sitting for secondary school entrance exams at the age of 11, the collaborative parent-teacher structure implemented a new standard: transparency in applications and continuity in schooling from the ages of four to 16. “These parents had a far-reaching vision for their children to receive a better education than what was available at the time,” says Dr Gauci. “And they were right. Our students have gone on to become leaders in diverse spheres. They are also now parents themselves, a good number of them with children enrolled here with us. This pays tribute to the remarkable success of San Anton.”
Today, the school boasts many achievements, including state-of-the-art educational, sports and performing arts facilities, a multi-level car park and a professional sports programme in tennis and athletics. Looking ahead to the next 30 years, San Anton vows to remain at the forefront of education in Malta. “We will continue to empower students; by nurturing their talents and assisting them to maximise their potential, academic or otherwise,” says Dr Gauci. “And, we remain determined to prepare students for 21st century global realities and real-life challenges, forging dynamic, knowledgeable, creative, articulate and compassionate leaders, who give back to society and lead by example.” n San Anton School, L-Imselliet l/o Żebbiegħ, T: 2158 1907 E: admin@sananton.edu.mt W: www.sananton.edu.mt School tours are conducted on a weekly basis, by appointment.
“San Anton taught me how to approach life. The academic programme was great but, as a non-academic pupil, I still benefitted tremendously because I was encouraged to believe I could succeed. The school’s holistic education supported me along the path to achieving my career goals.” Dean Gera, entrepreneur. “I only joined San Anton for two short years from Grade 11, but it was one of my most formative experiences. I relished the creative teaching approach and the school’s countryside location. I wasn’t particularly academic, but San Anton gave me the tools to think outside the box and discover what I could be good at. Our teachers were wonderful and we still talk about the education we received today – mostly in a WhatsApp chat group shared by our whole grade. We talk especially fondly of our incredible teacher, the late Ms Maggie Borg, who inspired a generation of keen environmentalists. I still treasure the friendships and the incredible networks the school opened up to me.” Jo Caruana, magazine editor, businesswoman and actress.

Sowing the seeds of dance dreams Marisha Bonnici, founder and artistic director of Seed Dance Studios, is continuing to pave the way for the blossoming of Maltese dance careers. Having grown up in her mother’s dance school, the stage is Marisha’s second home and the dance studio a place of memories. Now ready to nurture the dance memories of the future, Seed Dance Studios presents an evening of talent with its dance showcase on 22 June.

W
hen Marisha Bonnici founded Seed Dance Studios, she did so with a vision: to show young artistes that to dream is to live and to work hard is to make those dreams come true. Living this vision through dance, the well-known school is where budding Maltese talent flourishes. “At Seed, we take dance a step further,” beams Marisha. “I want students to spread their wings and fly.” With local and international achievements under its belt, the school is now set to impress on 22 June, when its dancers take to the stage for a one-off, one-hour-long performance. The dance treat is an opportunity for dance enthusiasts and those interested in joining the school to behold high-level contemporary and Spanish dance, classical ballet and street jazz. “The show is a celebration of years of hard work and a send-off for our graduating group of international vocational students,” explains Marisha. Many Seed dancers have already been accepted into prestigious academies worldwide, including the Royal Ballet School, English National Ballet School, Princesse Grace Monaco, Rosella Hightower Cannes, Paris Opera, American Ballet Theatre, Ballettschule Theater Basel, DAF, Elmhurst Ballet School and Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance for summer intensives. Marisha herself is no newcomer to the perseverance a career in dance demands. “Whatever our students set their hearts on, they must do it with passion, love, dedication and enthusiasm, remembering that obstacles are opportunities to push themselves further.” Growing up, Seed’s artistic director witnessed the dance grind first hand as her mother co-owned one of Malta’s leading dance schools. “Dance came very natural to me, giving me such energy and joy,” reminisces Marisha. “Watching my mother’s classes and all the behind-the-scenes work – which often goes unnoticed – I realised that dance extends beyond just movement and the conventional dance exam system. I fell in love with the costumes, stages, lights, ideas and performances. Sometimes I’m not sure where dance starts and ends for me – it’s one whole bubble,” she chuckles.
Seed lives and breathes lifelong artistic and professional development. Striving to lead by example, Marisha recently completed a six-part, teacher-centred seminar at the Royal Ballet School. “As a teacher, I constantly pursue my own development,” she explains. “Learning and absorbing new skills and knowledge are vital.” This is why Seed expects commitment to learning from its dancers and promises the same commitment to teaching in return. The June showcase follows Seed’s recent success at the Young American Grand Prix, the world’s largest competition for dancers aged nine to 19. Impressively, 14 dancers made it to the final in New York by winning their way through regional semifinals held worldwide. Marisha explains that competition dance is a great training tool for young talent. “Performing on a world-class stage alongside other wonderful dancers and highly-esteemed judges is a dream for many children. It’s surreal to think that for our students that dream is now a reality. They got a taste of what’s on offer if they work hard and shoot for the stars.” Like its dancers, Seed has trailblazing ambitions, too. The school was the first in Malta to hold Street Jazz ISTD and American Ballet Theatre examinations, and it is also home to a Royal Ballet School International Scholar – one of just 10 dancers selected for the special programme globally. “We will continue to commit to young dancers and to dream beyond the studio,” asserts Marisha. “International guests will continue to visit and we will continue to strive for good results. Above all, we will continue to believe that children deserve to experience the beauty of the stage. Nurturing young dancers is what I set out to do and I will continue to do this tirelessly.” n
Seed Dance Studios is where budding Maltese dance talent flourishes.
Seed Dance Studios’ showcase is open to the public and will be held at St Agatha’s Auditorium in Rabat at 6pm on 22 June. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance. Details can be found on Seed’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Seedancestudios

‘Culhat al Belt: Sette Giugno 1919-2019’ A fantastic new exhibition by Heritage Malta celebrates this milestone in Maltese history.
T
here comes a time when people have to stand up and fight for their rights. Although described as “a much enduring and patient race”, on 7 June 1919, the Maltese people were led to a point of no return. The riots which took place on that eventful day saw “the bloodiest street confrontations during the entire British period”. This unprecedented and unique episode between colonisers and the colonised in Malta is vividly presented in the latest exhibition by Heritage Malta in collaboration with the National Archives – ‘Culhat al Belt: Sette Giugno 1919-2019’. The exhibition aims to investigate the circumstances that led to the Maltese uprising against the British colonial government and its consequences, in a unique event of national unity when the leaders deliberated,

and the people operated for one objective. Enthusiastic declarations after the First World War, which stated that the Allied victory was in actual fact the success of free people and national selfdetermination over autocracy, brought with them a time of great expectations. Colonialism had started to turn full circle. Europeans had conquered most of the globe with the excuse of spreading Western culture, supposedly superior to that of the conquered territories. This was, in fact, so successful that conquered territories adopted Western values and principles such as self-determination and human rights. Then, during the 20th century, they started claiming equality with their conquerors in the name of those very values. This new movement also reached Maltese shores. An increasing sense of patriotism among the Maltese bred a need for more political rights and a demand for a self-government constitution. Yet the British rulers were not ready to let go of their ‘fortress island’ that easily. Revolutionary messages that urged people to claim their rights, the arrest and court martial of leading figure Enrico Mizzi, censorship of the press, the strike and protests of university students, a strong feeling of exploitation and disregard by the foreign authorities, the different treatment and salaries between Maltese and English workers in the dockyard, dismissals from

the dockyard, the great scarcity and inflated prices for essential foodstuffs such as bread, and the imposition of new taxes were bringing the Maltese to a boiling point. As Dr Giuseppe Mizzi had observed in the newspaper ‘Malta’ following the first meeting of the Assemblea of 25 February 1919, “only a spark is required for the fire to break out”. Heritage Malta’s exhibition ‘Culhat al Belt: Sette Giugno 1919-2019’ follows the intriguing factors that eventually led to the revolt of the Maltese people against their British rulers and those considered as their sympathisers on 7 June 1919. It also highlights some of the consequences that emerged once this decisive action was taken. n The exhibition will be held at Parliament House in Valletta up to 31 August 2019. It will then move to the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta until the end of the year.

ARMS: When knowledge With the launch of its new portal at the end of last year, ARMS has made it even easier for customers to have all the knowledge they need at their fingertips – from paying bills to organising new services. Jo Caruana chats to COO Nikita Zammit Alamango to find out more.
I
have to make a confession: I have never properly sat down and studied my ARMS bill in great detail. On the contrary, I have glanced at it, felt overwhelmed by the information in it, and wondered what it all meant. The upshot? I am one of the many clients not arming myself with the knowledge to know how best to use the services that ARMS offers. However, as I chat to Nikita Zammit Alamango, ARMS COO, it becomes clear that I am putting myself at a disadvantage. Instead of running like a headless chicken away from my bill, a few minutes spent going through it would make it much easier for me to understand it. And, as we all know, knowledge is power. “I understand that many people are so busy that they don’t have the time to

go through their bills,” Nikita tells me. “But it is so important – and easy!” And this goes beyond bills. People often head to ARMS without having read through the forms required for the service they need (like moving a meter or paying a bill on someone’s behalf) and then get annoyed when progress can’t be made. “Of course we understand that our services can seem complicated and they aren’t usually very popular. After all, here we’re dealing with things we take for granted like water and electricity, not handing out holidays!” Nikita smiles. “But we want customers to know that we are here for them. Our advice is to always go through the information on the website (where all the necessary forms are available) or to give our Customer Helpline a call.
We don’t want people to have to queue here unnecessarily any more than they do; we hate it when people take time off work to come here and then can’t complete the task at hand. If everything is aligned before they get here – or even completed online or by post – our clients get the job done while saving themselves time, and that is the perfect solution for all concerned.” Nikita explains that many of ARMS’s services are available online without the need for registration, whereas others require clients to log in so they can gain useful insight to their own bills and other facilities. “Here you can log in to calculate and pay bills, read up on tariff prices and FAQs, submit and view readings, and go through all of the possible e-forms and applications that you might need for any of our services. You

can also sign up for E-Billing, to receive your bill directly into your inbox, which is both convenient and good for the environment.” In essence, ARMS have put everything in one place so that their customers can go through everything at their leisure – be that at 9am on a Monday or at 11pm on a Sunday – before taking the next step. “Making things as easy as possible is our predominant goal, and we have listened to clients to be able to make that happen,” Nikita continues. Technically speaking, there isn’t actually any need to visit the team in-person at ARMS, although the company understands that some people still prefer face-to-face contact. “But all the services we offer can be completed remotely,” Nikita says. Beyond that, there’s even an app (available
on both Apple and Android systems) that makes it easy for people to check certain information on the go. “It’s a cool gadget that is really very simple to use,” Nikita continues. “You simply scan a copy of your ARMS bill and it can populate all the necessary fields. You can then view your bills, run through parts of the portal, and even pay a bill for someone else.” Rounding up our chat, Nikita underlines that the main thing she would like people to know is that ARMS really does want to make life easier for its clients – and to put them in the driving seat. “When people are informed, the processes are easier and everything runs more smoothly. If something doesn’t look right to you – like your bill is suddenly €10 when it is usually €100 – don’t shove that under the carpet, get in touch.
Want to save money on your bills? Sign up to direct debit, and automatically qualify for a 2 per cent discount on your domestic or residential bill.
“So the key thing for people to understand is that knowledge really is power. The more you educate yourself about your bill, our services and how to use them, the more time you can save on getting things done. And what could be better than that?” she adds. n Find out more: Freephone: 8007 2222, E: customercare.arms@arms.com.mt, ARMS.com.mt

e Maltese are no different to anyone else in the world: we have realised that spending more time outdoors is what we look forward to, especially over spring and summer when entertaining and meeting up with family and friends, or simply for personal enjoyment such as reading or relaxing on a veranda, in a pool area, garden, patio, or in any other available outdoor spaces. Bliss! Our Outdoor Collection at Form includes a new range of sofas and chairs featuring hand-woven rope that is weather-resistant. We also have a range of glass-topped and extendable table models, as well as
new stackable chair designs from our Belgian supplier Jati & Kebon, as featured in the pictures here. We will once again have a range of outdoor furniture from Zuiver, featuring the Albert Kuip garden chairs and their latest innovation, with the Albert Garden bistro table to match. The chairs are sturdy enough to withstand winds, yet light enough to be picked up and moved around your garden/patio/veranda following the gorgeous sunshine. This round garden table also doesn’t require any significant maintenance and even fits in the smallest of outdoor spaces. The design and finish of your outdoor furniture will play an important part in your home, not only to complete the design in a harmonious way, but because the overall look will reflect your personality in the same way your interiors do. Start by thinking about your priorities, comfort and a dash of style definitely, but consider the flexibility and the benefits of lightweight stackable chairs and extendable tables in terms of daily use and winter storage space. Consider quality if you want durability. Outdoor furniture will be affected by the salty, Mediterranean air and the strong sun. Narrow down from there based on what is more important to your lifestyle and your expectations. GARDENS
These two beautiful outdoor spaces may be completely different in style, but both provide stunning settings for the upcoming season and are beloved by their owners. Here, we take a closer look at how these gardens grow. Editorial by Jo Caruana

Michele O’Reilly, who owns The House Shop, and her husband Tony transformed their stunning Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq home from a traditional 70s villa into the sophisticated contemporary space you see today. With six children between them, their outdoor space is much-loved by all the family, and they spend summers here entertaining, dining, relaxing and recharging. Photos by Bernard Polidano
“We bought this house 13 years ago and it looked very different back then! It was traditional in style and just didn’t work for us as a family. So we opted for a complete renovation. I think the biggest change was that we excavated the garden around the house, so that we could
bring light into the bedrooms downstairs; they were in the basement back then. We also shifted things around so that the kitchen and living room (which used to be a bedroom) would lead out onto this pool deck. I love bright properties, so I wanted to get as much light into the rooms as possible.

“As a whole, I think it is the perfect place for us to just ‘be’.”
“Our six children were all quite little when we moved in, so we needed the house and garden to work for our growing brood. One of the key spaces was the lawn at the back of the house, which we rehashed into a sports pitch for them to play football and other games on; it’s the ideal size and worked perfectly. It does take a lot of maintenance to keep it looking like that though!
“As we live quite internationally now – with Tony commuting overseas a lot and the children at school, college or working in different parts of the world – we love to enjoy our time together as a family when we have it. Our large outdoor dining table is central to that, and we have many happy memories sat around it with friends, or relaxing in the evening by the fire pit. “Personally, I am not a big fan of swimming, so I am rarely in the pool – but the children and their friends adore it. I, on the other hand, prefer to sit here in
this shaded area with a book or glass of wine. The neighbourhood is very quiet, so it’s a great space for cutting off and just recharging. “I would say we all have our own favourite spaces and use them in different ways. My favourite thing would have to be the colour scheme, which is minimalist and makes the most of the contrast between the wood, stone and greenery. The kids love the pool, of course, and Tony loves to sit overlooking the chapel, just taking in the view. As a whole, I think it is the perfect place for us to just ‘be’.”

Angela and James Arrigo, who both work within decades-old family businesses, have steadily transformed their traditional Attard garden over the past 30 years – and it is a haven of beautiful flowers, exotic plants and unusual fruit trees. They are both passionate gardeners and spend plenty of time working hands-on across the various spaces within the grounds. Photos by Alan Carville
Angela: “My father found this house 30 years ago and it has been in our family ever since. Back then it was in a terrible state, having been dilapidated since the end of World War II (during which time refugees from Senglea lived here). “I wasn’t always a natural gardener, but I was inspired by James’ father – Major Arrigo – who had very green fingers. James’ family home was in Żejtun, and his father was well known for his gardening talents
and miniature rose collection. He helped me to understand how gardens work and I fell in love with the process. My father also had a passion for gardens, as he had a lovely garden and excelled at growing roses in a house by the sea in St Paul’s Bay. I think it helps that I am quite a patient person, as gardening takes up a lot of time.” James: “When we moved in here there was a lot needed to bring the garden back to life – including pruning back the fruit

trees, and adding many more trees and plants. We have a huge variety now, including avocado, pear, apricot, mulberry, kiwi and papaya. There’s nothing nicer than going out into the garden to pick fruit and then using it in a recipe. I love having fruit from our garden for breakfast. “It’s hard to pick a favourite part of the garden because we use it a lot. On weekends, Angela and I spend hours out here planning and pruning; it’s a weekly tradition. We also regularly entertain friends and have people over for dinner, and I also like to have a swim before work in the summer months.” Angela: “If I had to pick a favourite plant in the whole garden, it would probably be our avocado trees. Most were bought as saplings and planted here, but the largest (which sadly blew over in the horrible storm we had earlier this year but was saved, thanks to an
intervention by Italian gardeners) was grown from a stone years ago. They bear a lot of fruit and it is always delicious. “I do love growing plants from seeds in general, actually. It’s such fun to watch them develop and to re-pot them. The flowers are my domain too, and it’s glorious to see them in full bloom. The garden changes so much throughout the year depending on what’s in season, so there is always something interesting to look at or work on.” James: “If anyone is thinking of getting into gardening, I would say go for it – it’s very rewarding, although it does take time and patience. Healthy gardens are absolutely crucial for our world today and we should be doing so much more to protect them, so if you have a passion for growing plants and flowers, don’t hold back. There’s nothing lovelier than having a green space all of your own.” n

Ta’ Qali gets more public recreational open space The Planning Authority has concluded a three-month-long direct action operation in Ta’ Qali, making way for a new public recreational area as part of a much bigger national project.
A
50,000m2 site in Ta’ Qali that is approximately the size of seven football pitches, has, over the past three months, been entirely cleared from tons of illegally-dumped construction material and an abandoned factory. Following this direct action operation carried out by officers within the Planning Authority’s Compliance and Enforcement Directorate, the site will now be given back to the public for recreational purposes as part of a much bigger project, namely, the establishment of the Malta National Park. The operation got underway after the Authority received and investigated various reports that illegal dumping was taking place in this abandoned area in Ta’ Qali, at a site which, in the past, served as an industrial area but today was easily accessible to the public who frequented it for recreational purposes. From investigations it was found that the area was turned into a dumping site and was posing a significant danger.
72 STYLE LIVING
Malta National Park
Initially, the direct action consisted of the removal of the dumped material, abandoned heavy machinery and large amounts of precast waste. During the operation, the PA established that the two large abandoned concrete manufacturing plants, also within the same area, were structurally unstable. To eliminate any danger within the site, the 8,100m2 factory structures were demolished. Following consultation with the Superintendence of Culture Heritage, a number of World War II Nissen huts were retained and are to be protected due to their historical importance. Over 1,200 truckloads of dumped material were removed from the site and transported to a licensed landfill. Inert material was brought in to homogeneously level the site and leave the area in a safe state for the public. This 50,000m2 site is being added to other disused and derelict zones around the existing Ta’ Qali Park, with the purpose of considerably increasing the area of the national park. The Malta National Park project will see the current park enlarged to 450,000m2 by freeing disused and derelict tracts of surrounding land. n
The new Malta National Park will be framed by a recognisable green belt and linked to its surrounding villages by means of dedicated pedestrian and cycling lanes. A drastic reduction of tarmacked surfaces and vehicles accessing the green zones is being proposed, with a number of new facilities that will help enlarge the recreation network already in place. As a result, the homogenisation of all the various sites and elimination of abandoned areas will make the park feel safer to families and will be easier to navigate within. The park will include a new, green-roofed building to house the national archives, which will be located close to the current basketball facilities. Nearby, a botanical archive is also being proposed as an educational extension to the research facility. Existing leisure areas shall be retained and have their infrastructure upgraded, while new ones (event spaces, an art park, skate garden and playgrounds) will be integrated within the new national park. A number of roads crisscrossing the park will disappear entirely, while others will be grass-paved for service vehicles entering the park.Â

“Even with the brightness of summer upon us, lighting still plays a major role in our homes. Layer your lights by having a variety of arrangements including overhead, wall and table lamps,” says designer SABRINA CAMILLERI, from Maison and Lumiere. “Our statement pieces are all about diversity in lighting, promising an elegant summer glow.”

LIFE GETS Brighter 1. Golden Glow
Every home should be radiant in gold. Warm and mellow, we love this hanging lamp for its candlelight effect. The gold finish is trendy and versatile. Whether you lean towards a modern or classic design style, this light will blend well in any interior space.

stunning pouch, bespoke jewellery, vivid digital art, striking acrylic paintings and colourful ceramics are just a few of the numerous entries submitted in the open art competition launched by Campari to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the iconic cocktail Negroni. Launched earlier this year and organised in collaboration with Allura – Malta Open Art Studios, the competition called for established and up-and-coming artists to design an original, eclectic and inspired artwork that encapsulates the spirit of Negroni – balance and simplicity, but with an original twist. After a lengthy process, the judges – all experts in their respective fashion and art backgrounds – selected Gabriella Lukacs’ tailored pouch as the winner of the competition. and aptly named ‘Revive’, the shape and colours reflect the stylish elegance and panache Negroni symbolises. Christine Porter Lofaro scooped second place with her exquisite painting ‘As They Flow’, while JAD Jewellery came in third with their masterful neckpiece that exhibited all the different elements that complete the Negroni. The fourth place was awarded to Jana Frost who combined photo-collaging and digital vector illustration to present a classic-yet-modern take. The fifth finalist was Zack Ritchie whose digital interpretation ‘The Dance of Negroni’ is a call to connect, socialise and celebrate in true Campari fashion. The Campari Malta Artist 2019 winner, together with the other finalists, will have their work used for Campari Negroni promotional material throughout 2019, besides being prominently displayed during
Jana Frost – ‘The Taste of Negroni’
various major art and fashion events happening in Malta during this year. Considered to be one of the most famous Italian cocktails in the world, Negroni was invented in 1919 by Count Negroni, who asked to add a touch of gin rather than soda to his americano, in honour of his last trip to London. Negroni’s fascination stems from the fact that it is an equally balanced drink, made from three equal parts: one part gin, one part Campari and one part Cinzano Vermouth Rosso. Described as a ‘long drink in a short glass’, every Negroni created is an artwork in itself, made to be enjoyed and shared with others. n For more information, visit the Campari Malta Facebook page. Reduce to the desired consistency. In a clean pan, add 25ml olive oil and fry two cloves of garlic. Add the whole herbs, half the cherry tomatoes and throw in the clams. Splash with white wine and cover. Cook for a few minutes and then remove from heat. Repeat the process with the prawns. Strain the liquid and add to the sauce. Pick out the whole herbs and add the shellfish to the sauce. Cook the pasta until just crisp to the bite. Strain and retain some cooking liquid. Add the pasta to the sauce and toss. Add the butter to thicken the sauce. Finish off with the fresh, chopped herbs and adjust seasoning to taste. If too thick, loosen the sauce with some cooking liquid from the pasta.

Charred Iberian pork Ingredients: Iberico pork; olive oil; salt. For the Romesco sauce: 200g red peppers; 40g almonds; 30g hazelnuts; 2 garlic cloves; 4g paprika; 10ml sherry vinegar; 60ml olive oil; salt and pepper. For the chimichurri sauce: half a bunch of parsley, chopped; 20g oregano, chopped; 20g marjoram, chopped; 8g chilli flakes; 4 cloves garlic confit; 20ml red wine vinegar; 150ml olive oil; salt; cracked black pepper. For the spiced aioli: 150g mayonnaise; 20g sriracha; 4g smoked paprika; pinch of cayenne pepper; 10g Dijon mustard; 2 cloves garlic confit; 1 lime, zest and juice; salt.
Method: For the Romesco sauce, preheat the oven to 160°C. Toast the almonds and hazelnuts in the hot oven. Cook until golden brown, remove from the oven and allow to cool. Place the peppers, nuts, garlic, paprika and vinegar in a food processor, and blend to a coarse paste. Add half the olive oil and pulse the mixture until the oil has been incorporated. Transfer to a bowl and fold in the remaining olive oil. Season to taste. For the chimichurri, mix all the ingredients together except the vinegar. Only add the vinegar before serving. Adjust seasoning to taste. For the spiced aioli, whisk all the ingredients together and season to taste. Depending on personal taste, heat can be increased with additional chilli flakes and sriracha. For the charred pork, drizzle the olive oil on the pork and rub with salt. Allow to come to room temperature before grilling. Char the pork on both sides and cook until the core is 60°C. Remove from heat and allow to rest before carving. Serve with a selection of sauces and a seasonal salad that can be jazzed up with edible flowers for both colour and taste.

Knickerbocker glory Ingredients: a variety of chopped fruit such as strawberries, bananas, melon, grapes and peaches; vanilla ice-cream; fruit syrup, traditionally peach puree; whipped cream; cherry compote; cherries; ice-cream wafer; nuts (optional).
Method: Prepare a tall glass (like the type traditionally used to serve milk shakes). Dice the fruit into small pieces.
