“We are rarely proud when we are alone.” - V oltaire
I chose the above quote because this issue – and the people in it – really do make me feel proud. You see, there’s a sense of patriotism that runs through the pages of Style this time around. It starts with our adorable covers stars, young singers Gaia and Federica, and their tutor Gillian Attard. These three ladies have given us a lot to be proud of in recent months, including wins at the Junior Eurovision Song Content and Ti Lascio Una Canzone. The Style team had a great time meeting with them and learning all about their exciting careers so far, as well as their plans for the future. You can read all about them on page 15. I’m also proud of our feature on priceless Maltese possessions on page 47. This article delves into our history to unearth some truly unique items, all of which have been lovingly returned to Malta by their careful collectors. Plus, we meet three sets of home owners on page 61 to discover the stunning views from their favourite rooms – trust us, these views will also make you feel pretty proud of our island home! Of course, Style is packed with all your other favourites this issue, including our Rocking the Boat fashion shoot on page 35, our easyto-recreate beauty look on page 57 and our see-and-be-seen Papped! pages. Thankfully, the lull of the summer months is pretty much here, once again reminding us of all the good things in life (from days by the pool to BBQs long into the night). I wish you lots of relaxing ‘happy reading’, as well as a wonderful summer with plenty to be proud of! We’re looking forward to hearing about what you think of Style on Sunday. Please send your Letters to the Editor, comments and queries to editor@styleonsunday.com

Although Gillian Attard has only been working in the music industry for five years, her students’ victories at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest (JESC) and Ti Lascio Una Canzone (TLUC) have catapulted her to the forefront of Malta’s media and the collective conscience. Never one to be satisfied or give up, she has many other projects in store, including getting Malta’s representative for this year’s
Junior Eurovision ready to take the stage. Here she tells us what her life has been like and gives us a glimpse into her future endeavours: “I was just four years old when I first started taking singing lessons under the guidance of Doreen Galea and, later, Brian Cefai. I then stopped and still regret that a little, but, in 2009, once I was certified to teach, I launched my academy and never looked back.
“I would say that it’s the bond I have with the children that sets me apart. These children are so talented that it’s easy to train them but I love them as if they were my own and really invest in them, so I think that makes all the difference. “Years ago I could never have imagined reaching this level of success – it all feels like a dream and I don’t want to wake up. What we achieved is absolutely huge and these children have given me so much; I really can’t believe it.
Gillian wears: Raia sterling silver necklace with fresh water pearls and tourmaline stones, €180; Raia sterling silver bracelet with fresh water pearls and tourmaline stones, €80. Gaia wears: Pandora bracelet with charms, bracelet, €80, charms starting from €40.

Federica wears: white Ice Watch from stone sili collection, €155; Thomas Sabo pink quartz bracelets, €34.

ederica Falzon’s win at Italy’s TLUC was an unexpected surprise to the nation. She has since been chosen to represent Malta in this year’s edition of the JESC, which will be held on our shores. “While I was waiting for the results of TLUC, I was really excited and anxious. I realise now that that was a once in a lifetime opportunity. “It was really nice to win, and I would like to thank all those people who came to the airport to show their support. I don’t want to make a fuss about winning, however, and I don’t want people to treat me any differently. “I feel really honoured to be able to represent Malta at the next Junior Eurovision. I hope I can do well as I have a lot to live up to. In fact, Gillian and I have already started working on the song! “Singing isn’t just a hobby to me and I would like to become a fulltime performer in the future. I don’t want to get too famous though!”
“Gaia was one of my first students and Federica came to me two years later. Both of them showed promise immediately and I took them on on the spot. “Since then it’s so hard to pick a highlight from the incredible list of special moments. There was the JESC with Gaia, TLUC with Federica and Io Canto with Veronica Rotin and Shauna Vassallo, another two of my students. It has also been thrilling to work with top international artists and to give singing masterclasses in Italy. Every moment means so much and I still get a thrill from watching the children sing again and again… I cry every time! “The final of the JESC was particularly emotional. As a team we’d been getting votes of 10 and 12 for much of the results and it was down to the last vote – but by that point I already knew that we’d made it! I threw off my heels and ran down from the balcony where we were sitting so that I could get to Gaia and give her a huge hug. It was such a proud moment for all of us. “TLUC was similar in that we were waiting for the results of the last show and I could see Federica in tears on the stage but knew I couldn’t go to her just yet. When she was finally announced as the winner it was both overwhelming and relieving. All her hard work had paid off and I really couldn’t be prouder.
aia Gauci is one of Malta’s most promising child stars thanks to her victory in the 2013 Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv. Her landmark win was even celebrated with a medal from the State of Malta. “The only thing I remember about winning the Junior Eurovision is someone telling me to put my earpiece on. I asked them what for and they said ‘You’ve won!’ It was surreal, I couldn’t even remember the lyrics and my make-up was all smudged. “I’m also really happy I got to perform at the Eurovision and to take selfies with all the singers, including Firelight and Conchita Wurst. My dream is to represent Malta at that contest one day, and to hopefully win! “Being awarded a Medalja Ghall-Qadi Tar-Repubblika was also fantastic, but if it hadn’t been for Gillian, I would definitely have never made it to this point. She’s strict but fun… apart from when we were at the Junior Eurovision – there she was stricter than usual! “In the future, I would like to become a vet because I love animals. I would consider being a full-time singer, but I wouldn’t do it for the fame but simply because singing makes me happy.”

STYLE 18 INTERVIEW
“while I can’t say too much just yet, you can expect to see us taking part in The Voice and X Factor in Italy in the future too!”
“That said, I don’t go easy on them. I am a very strict teacher with a rigorous training regime and tight schedule. I believe I give the kids the confidence and influence to achieve what they want, but I am honest with them that it is no easy ride. This is an academy; my students attend because they are considering singing as a future career. If that’s the path they choose then I will help them every step of the way. “Looking back on the past few years, the success we’ve achieved is very exciting. But I am also challenged by the future. I recently launched a PR and management arm so that we can manage our artists locally and overseas, and I am proud to announce that the academy will now also have its very own orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Joseph Chircop. That will be a huge step forward for us.
“We’ve also got five finalists in Cantagiro – it’s one of my favourite competitions so it is an absolute honour to be part of it. Aside from that, Federica and her singing partner Vincenzo will be holding a big local concert in September and there’s a collaboration planned with Joseph Calleja too. Oh, and while I can’t say too much just yet, you can expect to see us taking part in The Voice and X Factor in Italy in the future too! “As for me, well, my life does revolve around the academy, but it also circles around my fiancé Paul and our twoyear-old son Beppe. Beppe may or may not have the singing gene, but I can tell you that he sings ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ in perfect pitch – although he prefers to belt it out when I’m not there! We are all looking forward to a family holiday in Paris soon and I can assure you that I won’t be singing one note!” ¥

Roberto Cavalli has to be my favourite designer. His work is very colourful and, while I don’t usually wear bright colours, I do like items that stand out. I also like Diane von Furstenberg’s dresses, and Versace, Giuseppe Zanotti and Jimmy Choo’s shoes. My favourite shopping destination would definitely have to be Milan. I love the shops there… and the feeling! In fact, every time I go there I always want to buy absolutely everything – I’m quite the shopaholic. I would say that my style is quite smart. I like dresses, but then again jeans are also a staple in my wardrobe. I have to admit that I like looking a bit diva-ish when I have an occasion and that’s why I love Cavalli. Gillian wears: APM sterling silver necklace with cubic zirconia, €80; matching earrings, €90; Athomie sterling silver bangle, €803.
My social life isn’t very exciting to be honest! I have to work long
hours so it’s very difficult to socialise. However, when I do get the time, I like going to a wine bar to while away a few hours, which makes up for the lost time. I also love the theatre. I’m very passionate about the kids I coach. I live for them and I push them! I’m also passionate about my fiancé Paul and my son, Beppe. The best way to describe my character would be a ‘festa’! I’m all fireworks and craziness. I’m also honest and can be quite moody. In fact, I’m a million different things within the measure of a day – even the weather can affect my mood. I don’t like listening to music in my downtime, not even in the car or at a wine bar. Music obviously makes me think and I like to relax when I’m not working.

“I’d really like to know how I’m going to handle the anxiety once they hit their mid-teens!” ROGER
ROGER STRICKLAND Jr, director and co-owner of Sotheby’s International Realty and director of Europe Entertainment, may be known for his strong business mind set, but his paternal role means the world to him too. His children, Laura, 10, Nicholas, 8, and Antonia, 6, give us a glimpse into the man behind the suit. “A lot has changed since the early days when it was all babies, late nights and early mornings; now my children are more responsive and I love seeing their individual characters flourish. “I think being a father has definitely matured me over the years and it’s amazing to know that there are little people in the world who are an extension of myself, my ways and my character – as well as my wife Paula’s. “My only regret is that I miss out on certain things due to business trips and work, but I do try to spend as much time as I can with them and
to cherish every moment as they’re growing up so quickly. Thankfully we travel often as a family, and we have some great memories together… and a lot of funny stories too! “Last year, for example, we went on a skiing trip to Austria and it was hilarious to watch them tackling the slopes at

to learn to sacrifice and, if one of them is unwell or has exams, our whole schedules have to adapt. But these are little things really, and being a parent has taught me to appreciate what I’ve got. That’s why I’ve stopped smoking and started running, because I want to have as much time with them as I can. What I’d really like to know is how I’m going to handle the anxiety once they hit their mid-teens! “I’m not strict though, and when it comes to their future, I’d like my children to do what they feel they’re best at. My duty as a parent is to give them all the opportunities to get where they want to go; I will definitely push them to go to university and to study, but where they end up in life is completely up to them. “Ultimately, I’ve come to realise that it’s not easy raising children but it is an experience that is second to none. Of course it helps having the support of a dedicated, caring and loving wife and mother like Paula, and I definitely couldn’t do it without her!”
STYLE 26 INTERVIEW
“We’ve come up with an every-evening ritual: with one it’s a few tickles and with the other it’s a dance before she goes to bed.” KARL
KARL MICALLEF is a successful investment advisor and father to Rivah, 3, and Siena, 1. He is married to Dr Michelle Pace Micallef, who, along with Sarah Alamango, founded the Beyond Borders Adoption Agency. “Michelle and I had been married without children for over seven years before we adopted our eldest, and it was quite a big change as we had got used to the lifestyle that came with being child-free. That said, our adoption day was one of the best in our lives and having a child was something that we desperately wanted. Little did we know then that, just 10 months later, Michelle would actually fall pregnant with Siena… what a surprise that was! “Many people ask us whether it was
hard to go through the adoption process, but in reality the most emotional stage was back when we were deciding whether to go down that route or not. Appogg was extremely helpful and I’ve come to realise that the whole thing is not just a bureaucratic process but a way to help prospective parents prepare themselves for parenthood. “Being a father teaches you a lot about yourself, particularly through its challenges. I’ve really come to appreciate the work previous generations put in to see that we were raised well. It’s not easy to set an example, to teach your children values and to instil a level of discipline, but it’s definitely important. “Having said that, fatherhood is
incredibly rewarding and it warms my heart to go home after a really demanding day and see two big smiles on the faces of two little girls. We’ve also come up with an every-evening ritual: with one it’s a few tickles and with the other it’s a dance before she goes to bed. The memories are a big plus too, and I’ll never forget my first Christmas as a father, and their birthdays, and our first holiday with Rivah. “If I had to give advice to other prospective fathers, I would say that they should enjoy the time they have alone with their wives and make the most of it, because once children come into the picture they’ll have to plan for it and pay for it. I would also tell them to be involved in the whole process and to cherish every moment with their children.”
STYLE 28 INTERVIEW
“No one ever prepared me for fatherhood; there is no natural pattern or guidebook.” PETER
As the CEO of BRND WGN and one half of the singing duo Pete & Papps, PETER GRECH is a well-known and popular personality. He is currently training hard for the Ultramedchallenge to raise funds for the Inspire Foundation. Peter is also the proud father of three children: Lily, 5, Andy, 4, and Jamie, who is just five months old. “Being a dad has been brilliant and one of the best experiences of my life. Everyone with kids tells you it changes things completely and I always thought ‘yeah, whatever’, but once you see the miracle of your children being born it’s hard to not be overwhelmed by the whole experience. I think the fact that your love has created another human being is amazing. It’s

also tough sometimes of course; educating them is difficult, the perks are questionable but it’s definitely fantastic! “My busy work schedule means I often get home late, but I always make it a point to go to their bedroom and say goodnight. I think it’s amazing that it’s us, the family, the team – but I do feel like no one ever prepared me for fatherhood; I don’t blame them, though, as there is no natural pattern or guidebook. “Since becoming a dad, I also feel like I’ve started living with more uncertainties. Who knows what the future has in store for us – not just the big decisions, but also things that are out of my hands. Like who’s going to take care of them once I’m not here anymore? I’ve
realised that, from now on, any decision I make is going to have an impact on their lives as well. “We try to spend a lot of time together as a family and recently enjoyed a day on the beach. It was nothing flashy or out of the ordinary, but being there all together made it a picture-perfect moment I’ll cherish forever. We also get to travel to Sweden a lot as my wife Gabby is half-Swedish and that’s always great fun too! “As for their future, I believe that they need to make their own road. There is no ‘must’ for their lives, apart from, perhaps, travelling and respect for others. I just hope they have the right values, that’s all!”
KURT CAMILLERI BURLO’, along with his wife Trinity, owns the Camilleri Burlo’ Architects & Designers firm. His son Sebastian, known affectionately as Seb, was born just two months ago. “One of the things that surprised me the most about becoming a father was how easy it is to adapt to the new routine. Yes, life has changed a lot since Seb was born, but it’s definitely been for the better. I’m also lucky that my wife, Trinity, lets me sleep at night and that Seb doesn’t really cry that much. Bath time is my department, however, and it’s always hilarious. He gets to play and splash about, and I get to spend time with him. “I think we’ve been quite lucky in that, so far, everything’s gone well. It is hard to go to work in the mornings though, as I’d like to stay in with Seb! It’s lovely to head home and know he’ll be there, and to watch his facial expressions as they develop day-by-day.

“I could have never imagined that there would be such a bond or that I would feel such a responsibility towards him. In the future I know I will be worried when it comes to tackling milestones, like his first day of school and his exams, however. It’s those bad patches that concern me. “One thing I get asked a lot is whether I would like him to become an architect as well, but that’s up to him. Of course it would be nice to see him inheriting our family’s artistic streak, but so long as he has a plan in mind that’s fine. “I would also be happy if he turned out to enjoy sailing, as it’s one of my favourite hobbies, and Trinity and I agree that he should take up an instrument or two. We’ll let the future pan out and learn to find a balance. Our dream is for him to do as many things as possible and to focus on the ones he enjoys. Oh, and to stay out of trouble… hopefully!” ¥

“It is thrilling to think how much international attention the islands have received thanks to this beautiful map.” Dr Albert Ganado, a renowned map collector and the founder of the Malta Map Society, has been practicing law since 1947. He published the book Valletta Città Nuova, as well as other key map-related studies. While he treasures so many of the maps in his vast collection, none can quite beat this first draft of Valletta, dating back to 1558. “I have been collecting maps of Malta since 1953, back when I bought 26 double-sheer maps from Francis Edwards on Marylebone High Street in London. In those days there were historic maps of Malta all over the world and I have done my best to hunt down as many as possible! “This particular map is of immense
historical value because it shows what the harbour area looked like in 1558, before Valletta was built. When the Knights came to Malta they immediately understood the strategic importance of Mount Sciberras and wanted to fortify it. “On the order of Pope Pius IV, his personal architect, Bartolomeo Genga, came to Malta and immediately designed this map. Sadly this version of the city was never built because Genga died just three months later so the project was shelved. Then, after the Great Siege, a new map was designed by Francesco Laparelli and later built. “So the design on this map never saw the light of day, but that just serves to make it all the more unique. According to Bosio
Giacamo, a historian of the Order, there were only four copies of this map made by Genga; one went to the Pope, one was sent to the Grandmaster, one was kept by Genga and the fourth’s location remains a mystery. Today it is only this one that is known to be in existence and, due to the pinpricks found on it, it is believed that this is the original. “This beautiful map adorns my study wall and I love looking at it. I have written about it in the Journal of the International Map Collectors’ Society, and was later given the Helen Wallis Award by the same society. This was both an honour for me and for Malta, and it is thrilling to think how much international attention the islands have received thanks to this beautiful map.”

DR ROBERT THAKE
“I feel like I can live vicariously through these authors, and that I get to experience different parts of life.” DR Robert Thake is a young lawyer and the acclaimed author of Patriotism, Deception and Censorship. His unyielding passion for old Melitensia books has brought many rare volumes back to our shores, including this exceptionally rare copy of the 1556 Statvta Ordinis Domvs Hospitalis Hiervsalem. “I started collecting old books on 7 October 2007; I remember the exact date because it is one of the most important days of my life. At that point I had read and re-read John Milton’s Paradise Lost many times, and I felt like I needed to have a closer affinity with the book. “Unfortunately, Milton had been dead for a while so I couldn’t send him an e-mail or go to a book signing, so I decided to buy an 18th-century edition of his magnum opus instead – and it was unbelievable. I felt closer to the author and the book than ever before and the whole rush simply took over. “In time, my particular niche became old books printed in, or relating to,
Malta, and since then I have amassed some 100 volumes. Each of these is special in its own way of course, but the Statvta Ordinis Domvs Hospitalis Hiervsalem from 1556 is particularly interesting due to its captivating history. “This tome contains the statutes of the Order of St John following their expulsion from Rhodes, thereby making these the first statutes of the Order of Malta. What’s even more interesting is that this particular copy was in circulation 10 years before Valletta was built, and nine years before the Great Siege took place. “I am also quite proud of the fact that this is the folio edition; generally more aesthetically appealing and rare than the octavo edition (a common edition that’s smaller in size) which is found at the National Library of Malta. What’s also noteworthy is that the engraved title page has red stencilled into it, which was not particularly common on the Continent and even less so in Malta. In fact, as far as I know, it is the only book in relation to Malta to have this.
“When I won this copy at auction in Rome – just two days before my Criminal Procedure exam – I was ecstatic. One of the most important facets of this book, however, is the fact that it was printed by Antonio Blado, the printer who printed Machiavelli’s Discorsi and Il Principe. This fact almost prevented me from bringing it to Malta from Rome. “Truth be told, I have no idea why I’m so captivated. This may sound pretentious, but I feel like I can live vicariously through these authors, and that I get to experience different parts of life. “I don’t consider myself a collector but a custodian. Books such as these have a life of their own, and I am particularly happy when I manage to acquire a book from overseas because I get to bring it back home. “I also write about these books, so it’s not a passive hobby. In fact, every time I go abroad it’s either for research, to buy a book or to go to a book fair. I am also resolved in my decision to donate the collection to a worthy institution that will care for them properly once I can no longer do it myself.”

JACQUELINE CURMI
“This letter actually travelled from Malta to Pamplona in 23 days – which isn’t bad when you think about the journey it had to take at the time!” Jacqueline Curmi is a mum of two with a fascination for historic Maltese postage items. Having moved over from New York, she was the first woman to exhibit through the Malta Philatelic Society. Here she presents one of her favourite items – a delicate handwritten letter dating back to 1733 and the Knights’ time on the island. “My fascination for postal items dates back to when I was a little girl. My parents had emigrated to New York from Gozo in 1970 and I was born in the States. Of course they always had friends that they would send letters to and I loved seeing the airmail envelopes that came back in return, along with the colourful Maltese stamps that always seemed so much more vibrant than the American ones. “My passion for philately started out as a hobby I shared with my father. We
would remove the stamps by dipping them in water and keep them in a tin box, adding to the collection my mum had amassed from her childhood. I was also a member of the Stamp Club at school and loved exchanging stamps with friends. “Since moving to Malta I have developed quite a collection of historical local postal items over the years, including a piece of ‘disinfected mail’ from 1840, which was fumigated against the spread of disease. “This particular letter, though, is a favourite – not least because it is in fabulous condition and dates back to Manoel de Vilhena’s time as Grandmaster. “I acquired it through an online auction and love how, through it, I can feel connected to the past. Thanks to the Marseilles de Malte handstamp we know that it is precious and written by a knight. In fact, it is probably penned by three knights. It is signed by Xavier, Juan and Manuel, who are
likely to be brothers or cousins because they share the same surname; and it seems they are writing to another family member in Spain. “This letter actually travelled from Malta to Pamplona in 23 days – which isn’t bad when you think about the journey it had to take at the time! It would have been taken by boat to Sicily, and then passed on to a mounted courier who would take it to its destination on horseback. “So far we don’t know exactly what is being said within the letter, though it is likely they are writing about money or something commercial. The watermark ‘CD’ is also visible; this would have related to the knights in question, and their family. “Holding this piece of history in my hand gives me such joy; I know that it is unique and the handwriting is just beautiful. Although items such as this are hard to find, I definitely hope to add more to my collection over the years.” ¥

Seat Leon:
sublime balance between driving pleasure and practicality
PHOTOGR APH Y BY AL AN C ARVILLE
Style on Sunday test-drives the Seat Leon and discovers a refined sports hatchback. “Pay a few thousand euro more and buy a German car instead.” This statement could have arguably been somewhat justified in the past when a potential buyer assessed the prospect of buying a Seat. Today, the statement is indeed very difficult – if not impossible – to justify. Nowadays Seat is a wholly owned subsidiary of the prestigious German Volkswagen Group, together with Audi and Lamborghini, and pitched as a quality car maker with a youthful sporty profile. And perhaps the strongest evidence that Seat is now, indeed, up
there with the leading German and Japanese manufacturers is found in the Seat Leon. The new Leon has been developed on the MQB platform (meaning it shares the same technological platform) as the iconic MkVII VW Golf and the refined new Audi A3. The result is truly impressive. We test-drove the Seat Leon (Style Model) and discovered what is arguably the best Seat to date. What makes the Leon a strong contender in this segment is the fact that Seat has turned the Leon into a refined sports hatchback that provides a sublime balance between functionality
and practicality on one end and driving pleasure at the other end. There are plenty hatchbacks of that size on the market but the truth is… (putting it bluntly) most of them are indeed boring. Drivers are often trapped into buying a hatchback that suits their mind but not their heart. A car that fits the bill in terms of space, size, budget, functionality and perhaps fuel consumption but does not give them a kick, that thrill… the magical spark that makes a car so distinct from others. This is what Seat has managed to offer through the Leon. The Leon ticks all the right boxes
in the functionality and practicality department – adequate back legroom, very decent boot, a hatchback that can suit a young family, very economical and costing as little as €16,900 – which means that in reality it’s not expensive to acquire or to run. But beyond, the Leon is special because it gives you driving pleasure, refinement and style.
STYLE 54 MOTORING
Indeed, the Style model we drove is equipped with all the extras usually associated with the German executive cars or costly sports coupés. It has a media system with a sophisticated touch screen, climate control with two zones air-conditioning, parking sensors, auto lights, coming/leaving home system, rain sensors, electro-chromatic mirror and much, much more. Build quality is also impeccable and this is truly tested on our roads as the Leon holds itself impeccably well, both in terms of noise levels (being smooth) and being solid on the road. It also offers adequate torque and sporty road handling – in short
Verdict
Definitely a strong contender in its segment; excellent value-for-money and concrete evidence that Seat is now up there with the leading car manufacturers of all sorts. A car that gives you plenty of practicality as well as driving pleasure.
it is a car that is eager to perform and to punch beyond its weight. Even the entry level 1.2 TSI turbo-charged engine (the engine of our test-drive model) gives adequate torque and acceleration,
and this is primarily due to technological advances in the engine department as well as to the fact that the body of the Leon is considerably lighter than that of many cars in its segment, which makes the Leon stand out in terms of performance and consumption. The interior and the exterior of the Leon are indeed refined but sporty at the same time – the car features a sharp design that is very distinctive both on the interior and the exterior, rendering the Leon a sportier hatchback than most of its competition – you’re getting a hybrid here… a blend between functionality and fun. And perhaps that was the missing link in its segment. ¥

Next, it’s your cheeks’ turn. Using a really good brush (such as Guerlain’s Terracotta Brush, which is the perfect ally to a smooth complexion), apply a lightweight bronzing powder that will last all day. We recommend Guerlain’s Terracotta Light – a unique combination of five shades warmed with subtly mixed golden particles for a delicate tan.
STEP
Bronze make-up looks great on all kinds of complexions and helps to give the healthy glow we all crave at this time of year. Before you get started, bear in mind that this isn’t a look to go overboard on. What you want is a natural wash of colour across your nose, cheeks, temple and brows; keeping it casual is key.

Once your skin is in great shape, add some colour to your eyes. This season keep things simple and shiny. We love Guerlain’s Duo Eyeshadow (and recommend hue No. 2 – Spicy). This eye shadow makes it easy to make a statement, and with two shades in each box to choose from, you can be as dynamic as you like. STEP

Of course, this look wouldn’t be complete without strong eyelashes – and that’s where Guerlain’s Volume Creating, Curl Sculpting Mascara comes in. This season we’ve chosen to use this product in ‘mocha’, for a softer finish. It is a light-yetdeep brown that makes your eyes naturally irresistible!

BRONZED & BEAUTIFUL
Finally, keep lips light and kissable – even a slick of your favourite lip balm will do. But we do recommend choosing one with an added SPF to keep your lips both hydrated and protected.

STEP
To achieve this, start with cleaned, exfoliated and moisturised skin. Then apply a lightly-bronzed foundation, such as Guerlain’s Terracotta Joli Teint. This new product combines the perfection of foundation, the beautiful effect of a skincare product, and the sun-kissed radiance of terracotta. It helps achieve that radiant, make-up-free look that we’re all after, and even includes the benefits of an SPF 20 - PA++.
Make it look like you’ve just returned from a glamorous holiday in the sun with our beautiful, bronzed make-up look. As seen on the catwalks of JW Anderson and Emilio Pucci, this style is all about sunkissed skin, flushed cheeks and gorgeous warm tones. Style Tip:
Want a bright complexion? Of course you do! Well, there’s only so much that products can do for you, as a really gorgeous glow does tend to come from within. Boost your diet with glow-getting ingredients such as leafy greens and sweet potatoes, which will give you plenty of vitamins A and C, and plant oestrogen.

e have absolutely loved the two years since we moved to Ta’ Xbiex. This development was actually the first one we saw when we started looking, and we then hunted all over for something we liked as much. In the end we came back to it and we’re so happy we did! Even two years in, we really appreciate the view that we have – across the sailing yacht marina to the Valletta bastions. We do make the most of the view and sit out on the terrace whenever we can. It’s lovely to watch the sailing boats come back in to berth on a Sunday evening, as well as to see Valletta all lit up at night. Most of the buildings across from Ta’ Xbiex have also been nicely finished, so we have a good outlook from all angles really.
“It’s lovely to watch the sailing boats come back in to berth on a Sunday evening, as well as to see Valletta all lit up at night.”
Lexi and Kevin Deguara quickly fell for the open views from their seafront Ta’ Xbiex apartment. As the owner of Remax Blue Harbour, Kevin sees all sorts of views on a daily basis – but he instantly knew this was the one for them. Although we love lots of different views, sea views would probably be our favourite. On our travels Santorini blew us away – the mix of white and blue was absolutely dazzling. This view has definitely inspired some of our décor choices. For instance, this beautiful painting by Pawl Carbonaro was a wedding present from Lexi’s mum and brother. Turquoise stands out in it, and that has now become our accent colour for much of the rest of the house.
This apartment is a really social space. Our friends walk in and head straight for the terrace; the fact that it is covered over means we can enjoy it all year round. We even had an impromptu New Year’s Eve party out here last year! Watching the weather change is another highlight. It’s so much fun to sit on the balcony and watch a storm hit. It’s stunning when a wave of rain hits the sea, or the wind changes direction dramatically.
The lifestyle in Ta’ Xbiex really works for us, too. Whether it’s the view, the promenade, or having everything on our doorstep, we love it. We honestly don’t know how we could ever leave!

“It all changes colour through the seasons and is like watching live theatre.”
Our view changes constantly, which is why we could never tire of it. It has a 3D feel to it – the houses, the trees in the valley and the sea beyond. It all changes colour through the seasons and is like watching live theatre.

e first moved to Malta in 2009. We were thinking of buying a winter home here but we fell in love with the island hook, line and sinker, and chose to move here full-time. It was a big decision, especially as we had a baby at the time (and another one on the way!) but we knew it was the right thing to do.
We saw 70 properties before we found this one. We knew what we wanted: a view with a mix of greenery and sea sights, and an overall indoor-outdoor feel. There was no doubt about this house… even Emma, who was one at the time, loved it as soon as she walked in!
This is a great party house – both for children and adults. It’s so practical and we all wander in and out. We throw open the terrace doors upstairs and down, and it feels so open and welcoming.
We definitely make the most of the view. We have a dinner table outside that we use for most of the year and a sun sail that provides shade during the hottest hours of the day. We also set up a comfy seating area around an open fireplace, which means we can sit out here in winter too. It’s fun as the girls grill sausages or marshmallows on the open flame, and the smell of real wood burning reminds us of home. This view also reminds us of the many reasons why we love Malta – the architecture, the countryside, the sea. We really hope that the whole country works together to protect the beauty we enjoy here for future generations.

Waking up to this view means that every day is different, and we believe that once you have something of the sort, it becomes impossible to live without it. We love it when there’s a thunderstorm too, and the full moon is a spectacle.

hen we started our hunt for a home, we had a set idea on how we wanted it to turn out and the outlook we wanted. Both of us had always dreamed of having a house with a sea view, but we also wanted it to be the right size and have the right features. We actually looked at many other properties in Mellieha and Marsascala before buying this one. When we bought this property there was a lovely house already here, but we decided to tear it down and rebuild it to our specifications. We oversaw every single part of the process, and made sure that each and every room has a view. We’ve now been in this house for seven years and we couldn’t be happier. The promenade
goes really quiet after 7pm and all you can hear is the sound of crashing waves… it’s captivating! When we first moved into the house, we used to get foreigners taking pictures of it and we were both really stunned and amused.
We enjoy entertaining in the summer, and to hold barbecues, especially with the kids. Our children, Christian, 16, and Miguel, 14, also enjoy organising parties here and they always turn into quite big affairs!
One of the things we look forward to most is the changing of the seasons, as from summer to autumn and winter to spring, we get to experience a completely different outlook. Most people have a pool at the back of the house, but we wanted to make the most of these dazzling views. We also have to admit that we rarely go swimming in the sea these days. We wanted the house to be appealing to all the senses, and we put a great deal of effort into creating a space that is unique and – if we may say so ourselves – difficult to replace. ¥
“WE made sure that each and every room has a view.”

ROASTED BEEF TENDERLOIN WITH ASPARAGUS, CHERRY TOMATOES AND PEA SPROUTS – serves 4
Ingredients: 650g beef fillet; 5 garlic cloves; 16 asparagus spears; 10 cherry tomatoes; 60ml olive oil; juice of ½ a lemon; 1 sprig of thyme; 1 sprig of rosemary; rock salt; pepper; rucola; pea sprouts; balsamic vinegar; 4 figs. For the chutney: 1 red onion; 1 tbsp brown sugar; 20g fresh ginger; 1 clove garlic; 60ml white wine; 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar. Method: Marinate the fillet of beef in rock salt, garlic, rosemary and thyme. Sear in a pan before placing in a hot oven and roasting until medium-rare. Remove, cover with foil and allow to rest. To make the chutney, place all the ingredients in a non-stick pan on a medium heat until all liquids have evaporated. Remove from heat and leave to infuse. Brush the tomatoes with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic, salt and pepper. Roast for 6-8 mins. Grill the asparagus spears until crisp. Brush with olive oil and lemon juice, and season. To serve, carve the beef into medallions and place on a plate with the asparagus spears, cherry tomatoes, fig halves and some chutney. Decorate with rucola and pea sprouts.
