Ethical Manufacturing & Justice for Workers Demand for cheap textiles has led the apparel industry to allow some of the most unethical trade practices on the planet; worst examples include child labour, excessive working hours, unsafe and unhygienic working conditions. EarthPositive® is manufactured by Continental Clothing Company under the strict Code of Labour Practices independently verified by The Fair Wear Foundation, to promote fair labour conditions in the garment industry worldwide.

Low Carbon Products - EarthPositive® Apparel is made in manufacturing facilities powered by green renewable energy, from low-impact organic cotton. The carbon footprint of the EarthPositive® products has been reduced by some 90% and the calculations certified by The Carbon Trust.

EarthPositive® Apparel The Most Progressive Ethical Clothing On Earth

EarthPositive® takes direct action to combat climate change and to address environmental, social and ethical issues. It demonstrates the highest possible standards in one of the world’s most damaging and harmful industries.

The Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) works to improve labour conditions in the garment industry. By affiliating to FWF, we at Continental Clothing Company have committed ourselves to implementing and maintaining a Code of Conduct designed specifically for the garment industry. Companies that become members of FWF and sign the Code of Conduct take on the obligation to adhere to the labour standards in their own business operations. They also accept the duty to do everything possible to get other companies in their chain (e.g. suppliers) to respect these labour standards.

Our Code of Conduct The Code of Conduct for the Garment Industry is a contract between a company and FWF. Members subscribe to the FWF Code of Conduct and accept independent verification of the implementation of the Code of Conduct. They thereby take responsibility for working conditions in the production chain. The Code of Conduct is based on the Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Code of Conduct for the Garment Industry incorporates the following eight labour standards: 1 No use of child labour No use is made of child labour. Employees must have completed their period of compulsory education and must be at least 15 years old. Any form of slavery or comparable practices such as the sale and trafficking of children, debt bondage, serfdom and forced or compulsory labour are out of the question. Children [in the age group 15-18] may not perform any work that, by its nature or the circumstances in which it is carried out, is likely to harm their health, safety or morals. Conventions 138 and 182 2 No use of forced labour No use will be made of forced labour; this includes forced labour to redeem a debt of work by jail prisoners. Conventions 29 and 105 3 Safe and healthy working conditions Measures will be taken to ensure a safe and hygienic working environment, taking into account the available knowledge in the branch of industry and possible specific risks. Effective measures will be taken to prevent accidents and damage to health resulting from, or related to, the work. Risk factors in the work situation are to be minimised insofar as reasonably possible. Physical violence, threats of physical violence, unusual punishments or disciplinary measures and sexual or other forms of intimidation by the employer are strictly forbidden. Convention 155

42

4 Legal labour contract Employers’ obligations arising from social insurance laws and regulations applicable to a normal labour contract will not be avoided by introducing sham contracts or apprenticeship contracts where there is no intention to enter into a normal labour contract. Young employees must be given the opportunity to take part in programs of training and education.

5 Payment of a living wage The wages and benefits paid for a standard working week will at least match the legal minimum standards or the standards that are common for the branch of industry, and will always be adequate to meet the basic needs of the workers and their families and to provide a certain amount of disposable income. Deductions from wages for disciplinary purposes will not be permitted; deductions from wages for other purposes will only take place insofar as legally permitted. The deductions will never lead to a situation where the employee receives less than the aforementioned minimum wage. Employees are to be informed clearly and adequately regarding their wage specifications, including the basic wage and the period over which it is paid. Conventions 26 and 131 6 Freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining The right of all employees to form or join trade unions and to carry out collective bargaining will be recognised. Employee representatives are not to be discriminated against and are to be given access to all work areas necessary in the performance of their duties as representatives. Conventions 87, 98, 135 and Recommendation 143 7 No discrimination against employees Recruitment policy, wage policy, access to training, promotion policy, termination of employment, pensions and all other aspects of labour relations are to be conducted on the basis of equal opportunities, regardless of race, colour, religion, political orientation, trade union membership, nationality, social background, disabilities or handicaps. Conventions 100 and 111 8 No excessive hours of work The hours of work will correspond to the prevailing laws and standards for the branch of industry. In no case will workers be obliged to work more than 48 hours per week on a regular basis, and they will be given at least one day off in every 7-day period. Any overtime work will be done on a voluntary basis; will not amount to more than 12 hours per week; will not be called for on a regular basis; and will always be matched by additional compensation. Convention 1 Together with the Ethical Trading Initiative, the Fair Labor Association, Social Accountability International, the Workers Rights Consortium and the Clean Clothes Campaign, FWF participated in the Joint Initiative for Corporate Accountability and Workers’ Rights.

EarthPositive® Apparel has reduced the carbon footprint of its products by 90%. The carbon footprint (CO2e) is the total carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and other greenhouse gases emmitted during the cultivation and harvesting of cotton, fibre processing, textile production, packaging, transportation and warehousing in the EU. We have reduced the carbon footprint of EarthPositive products through a combination of innovative product design, low impact organic agriculture, efficiency in manufacturing, and by substituting standard grid electricity with renewable wind power. We do not use carbon offsets. ®

Carbon Reduction Labelling Consumers require an independent verification process and a label to confirm the claims of individual companies. The Carbon Trust is trialling such a label with select pilot partners. Continental Clothing Company was granted the first such label for its EarthPositive® apparel brand. The Carbon Trust’s footprinting methodology has evolved into the BSI PAS2050 specification, and is the basis for the new international standard on product carbon footprinting ISO 14067. The Carbon Reduction Label shown here and printed on the products’ care labels is a way of communicating the impact of each garment on the climate, and also displaying a very clear commitment to carbon reduction. How does the carbon footprint of other promotional apparel compare with EarthPositive® Apparel? Until other apparel brands publish the exact GHG emission values of their products - using the same BSI standard methodology - we can reasonably assume that the carbon footprint of a typical Men’s T-shirt is somewhere in the range of 7-15kg of CO2e, a Woman’s T-shirt is in the range of 5-11kg of CO2e, and a typical hooded sweatshirt is in the range of 40-90kg of CO2e or even more. There are many variables that affect the final value - from the cotton seed through to the finished garment.

Saving the Carbon Footprint together Here are some examples of the amounts of CO2 you will save if you choose EarthPositive® Apparel instead of an identical organic product manufactured without the use of green renewable electricity.

Example 1: Women’s EarthPositive® Classic Organic T-shirt White Size S Product Footprint 600g CO2 Reduction 5.4kg No. of Units: CO2 Saved:

200 pcs 1.1 tonnes

1000 pcs 5.4 tonnes

5000 pcs 27 tonnes

Example 2: Men’s EarthPositive® Classic Organic T-shirt White Size M Product Footprint 800g CO2 Reduction 7.2kg No. of Units: CO2 Saved:

1000 pcs 8.9 tonnes

5000 pcs 44.5 tonnes

Example 4: Men’s EarthPositive® Organic Pullover Hoody Black Size L CO2 Reduction 25.2kg Product Footprint 2.8kg No. of Units: CO2 Saved:

200 pcs 5.4 tonnes

1000 pcs 25 tonnes

5000 pcs 126 tonnes

Example 5: Men’s EarthPositive® Organic Zip-up Hoody Black Size XL Product Footprint 4kg CO2 Reduction 36kg No. of Units: CO2 Saved:

200 pcs 7.2 tonnes

1000 pcs 36 tonnes

5000 pcs 180 tonnes

Conventionally farmed cotton has a greater carbon footprint than organic cotton because of the use of petroleum-based chemicals and artificial fertilisers. Industrial farming in developed countries is heavily irrigated and mechanised, which further adds to the footprint. Larger sizes or heavier weight T-shirts will have a correspondingly greater footprint, and this can be significant. A typical T-shirt might weigh just 200g, and have a footprint of 9kg CO2e; and so the mass of GHG emitted into the atmosphere is almost forty five times greater than the mass of the T-shirt itself. The more raw materials and processing is needed, and the more greenhouse gases emitted to make a product, the higher its carbon footprint. Continental Clothing Company has completed an ambitious programme that has delivered a reduction in the carbon footprint of EarthPositive® Apparel by around 90%. You, the user, can make a further significant contribution to reducing the footprint by washing at low temperatures and line-drying.

44

The values shown here have been calculated and verified by the Carbon Trust. They were last updated in March 2009 to reflect changes in the methodology as prescribed by BSI PAS 2050.

What is EarthPositive® Apparel?

Low Water Impact

EarthPositive® Apparel is made to demonstrate the highest possible environmental, social and ethical standards in one of the world’s most environmentally damaging industries, and to provide the promotional wear industry with a familiar product with which to promote awareness and take action on climate change. Now, the humble T-shirt, the most basic canvas for communicating a brand name, identity, or political slogan, has become the environmental product.

According to PAN UK, it can take more than 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton, equivalent to a single T-shirt and a pair of jeans. That’s why we chose to work in a region that receives up to 95% of its water from the monsoon rainfall. This was an important consideration for us, as the monsoon rain reduces the need for large-scale irrigation normally associated with conventional cotton farming, which often deprives local villages of scarce water resources by draining lakes and rivers, and adds significantly to the product’s footprint.

EarthPositive® Apparel is made in manufacturing facilities in India powered by wind turbines, from low-impact organic cotton. EarthPositive® Apparel is a 100% organic product, produced under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and certified by Control Union and the Soil Association. EarthPositive® is GMO-free. Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) The Global Organic Textile Standard for organic textiles covers the production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labelling, export, import and distribution, to ensure the organic status of textiles from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling and supply, in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer. We offer both natural and colour reactive-dyed organic cotton garments, and to achieve organic certification only azo-free dyes that are permitted under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) are used. Fair Trade Practices Under the organic standard, farmers and agricultural workers are protected by stringent social criteria, total traceability across the entire supply chain, and also by the ban on the use of poisonous chemicals that can severely damage the health of farmers and their families. These standards also free poor farmers from third world debt to chemical companies on the “pesticide treadmill”.

Environmentally Friendly EarthPositive® is certified by the Oeko-Tex 100 Standard, Class I. The OekoTex Standard is a guarantee of the safety of textiles and dyestuffs to human health and to the environment. It also means we take more care in adopting environmentally friendly production methods throughout the manufacturing process. Wind Powered Thirty dedicated wind turbines provide the primary energy source for EarthPositive® Apparel’s manufacturing processes from spinning the yarn through to finishing the garments. The wind turbines turn wind power into clean renewable electricity. Transportation EarthPositive® has No Airfreight policy. We use containerised ocean shipping, thus the carbon footprint generated by transporting our apparel to Europe, Japan and the USA is negligible, more like a fingerprint [less than 1% of the product’s total footprint]. We cannot solve the world’s transportation and energy security issues, but we can ensure that our own methods do nothing to contribute to environmental damage, social injustice or climate change. Biodegradable Packaging EarthPositive® Apparel is packaged in biodegradable PVC-free packaging, and in 100% recycled cardboard boxes. What is “Climate Neutral”?

Justice for Workers To help tackle the social injustice often seen in manufacturing, commonly known as sweatshop labour, EarthPositive® goes further, making transparent the manufacturing supply chain through an independent audit by the Fair Wear Foundation, which promotes fair labour conditions in the clothing industry.

Climate Neutral means our industrial greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced to pre-industrial levels through low-impact (low-emission) organic agriculture and carbon neutral industrial manufacturing achieved by substituting electricity from fossil fuel power stations with clean renewable energy generated by wind turbines.

Pick Your Cotton Carefully We guarantee that we do not use cotton from Uzbekistan while the use of forced child labour is endemic. This follows the recommendations of the Environmental Justice Foundation’s Clean Cotton Campaign. The complete traceability of certified organic cotton allows us to make this guarantee.

46

Choosing EarthPositive® Apparel is a practical and immediate solution for businesses to take direct action to combat climate change and address environmental, social and ethical issues in a comprehensive and meaningful way.
