Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov, also known simply as Misha, was one of the greatest ballet dancers of all times! Ranking high up there with the likes of Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev, Misha was born in the Soviet Union and was my, and my mothers, idol when we lived in Moscow and to this day. My mother has always been the biggest fan of ballet and her love only grew whilst we lived eight years under the spell of the Bolshoi Theatre. My passion was a little more imposed at the beginning {I was forced to pretend to be gracefully good at an art which I was clearly not brought up for}. Being a little more on the chubbier side in those days it was {most probably} the smell of our green friend {the $$$} that got me noticed painfully accepted in one of the top ballet schools in the city. But as I aplomb-ed {sounds very fitting} my way off stage in my later years that is when I seriously took a liking to this fabulous form of entertainment.

So it is no surprise that when I heard that Baryshnikov was showcasing his art work in London that I jetĂŠd myself to the opening. 51

Dancing Away is Baryshnikov’s very personal interpretation of dance and performance; an expert dancer’s reflection upon his own metier. The exhibition celebrates him as a photographer and his work. I was told to pay close attention to Misha being in the unique position of ‘insider and outsider’ simultaneously. Whilst he may step out of his role as dancer, his intuitive dancer’s eye allows him to view every performance from a unique perspective.

Demonstrating that his artistry involves being both photographer and connoisseur, Baryshnikov’s images capture the movement and fluidity of dance, nothing is static or posed, rather they evoke the enchanting image of dancers in flight.

Showing at Contini Art UK until 31 January 2015 53
