A look at the highlights and what’s new on the Great West Way

Carvers Hill Farm: A new vineyard offering a unique wine experience in Wiltshire

Shalbourne is now home to a new vineyard, Carvers Hill Farm, which promises to provide a unique experience for wine enthusiasts. Owned by the Smith family, the vineyard sits on a picturesque spot, surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful countryside.

The vineyard, which spans over 16 acres, is planted with a variety of grapes, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The grapes are carefully selected to produce high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

Vineyard and winery tours will be bookable in the Spring/Summer season, when visitors will be able to join in the fun of various cultural events throughout the season. Visitors to the vineyard will also be able to enjoy a guided tour of the estate, which includes a walk through the vineyards and a visit to the winery. The tour provides an insight into the wine-making process, from grape to bottle. Carvers Hill Farm also boasts a tasting room, where visitors can learn more about the wines and the vineyard's history as well as sample a range of wines, including the vineyard's signature Chardonnay, which has already received critical acclaim.

Lucknam Park, near Bath

There's some great news for those who love luxury and comfort. Lucknam Park is all set to bring an exciting year ahead with the introduction of a newly refreshed restaurant, two new cottages, spa enhancements, and a brand new events space – one to watch!

Hotel Gotham Bristol

The new Hotel Gotham Bristol is on track to open late 2024 with 75 bedrooms, a restaurant, spa and even a rumoured rooftop terrace bar.

Described by the Guardian as ‘glitzy, ambitious, unapologetically opulent’ and offering ‘pizazz and pampering’, Hotel Gotham Bristol will be centrally located in the Old City part of Bristol so visitors can expect luxury and history with stylish twists, following in the footsteps of Hotel Gotham’s success in Manchester.

Beckford's Tower to reopen after multi-million pound refurbishment

This historic landmark in Bath, will reopen its doors to the public in spring 2024 after undergoing a multi-million pound renovation. The refurbishment to Beckford's Tower, includes a redesign of the tower's interiors, restoration of original features, and new roof and vault access. The restoration project also incorporates digitalisation of the interpretation and installation of solar panels and a greener heat pump – changes aimed at improving the visitor experience and making the attraction more sustainable. The tower, which was built in the early 19th century, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and is home to a rich history.

The Pig and The Village Pub

Just a short detour from the Great West Way route a new little piggy is being opened near Cirencester. Formerly Barnsley House Hotel and the village pub, THE PIG-and The Village Pub will be the latest reataurant-with-rooms, opening this summer.

National Garden Scheme to showcase joy and well-being benefits through show garden at the 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show

The National Garden Scheme will have a show garden at the 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show next May. Designed by eight times RHS gold medal winner, Tom Stuart-Smith, and sponsored by Project Giving Back, the garden will exemplify the joy and associated health and wellbeing benefits of garden visiting that have been at the heart of the National Garden Scheme since 1927.

The Store, Oxford

50 years on The Thames for Thames Rivercruise

Tim Deaton and Dave O’Neil, Thames Rivercruise has come a long way from its humble beginnings with a single wooden cruiser. Today, the company is home to a fleet of modern steel boats and a heritage fleet of 1920s and 1930s vessels. Tim, one of the oldest and longest-serving skippers on the Thames, still runs Thames Rivercruise hands-on with his son Ben. Together, they offer an exceptional cruising experience to guests, showcasing the beauty of the Thames and its surroundings.

Orangery Renaissance at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

The Orangery at Blenheim Palace has reopened after a two million pound restoration project carried out in collaboration with Historic England. The restoration work involved replacing the glass roof with timber and slate, and restoring the interior of the building. The Orangery offers afternoon teas, Sunday roasts, corporate meetings, and weddings. The new dining experience features locally sourced ingredients and a harmonious mix of contemporary and classic design. The Orangery has a rich history, having served as a greenhouse, theatre, gallery, and offices over the centuries. Thanks to information from the Blenheim Palace archives, it has been restored to its original design before a fire in 1861. MY GREAT WEST WAY

Discover the Beauty of RHS Garden Wisley through the eyes of Garden Manager Peter Jones, responsible for some of the most beautiful parts of the garden, from Oakwood, the historic heart of the garden, to the recently completed Oudolf Landscape, a newly developed garden showcasing a complex and diverse range of perennials and grasses.

RHS Garden Wisley is a world-renowned garden located in the county of Surrey, east of the Great West Way route.

Covering an area of 240 acres, the garden is a horticulturist's dream, boasting a diverse

range of plant collections, themed gardens, and experimental displays. For many years, Peter Jones has been an integral part of Wisley's team, leading the Hardy Ornamental department as the Garden Manager. In this interview with Peter we learn more about RHS Garden Wisley, its history, and its unique features that make it a must-visit destination for garden enthusiasts from around the world, along with Peter's favourite places to visit on the Great West Way.

Please tell us about your journey in becoming Garden Manager for Hardy Ornamental at RHS Garden Wisley?

I started my journey at RHS Garden Wisley as a student, studying on the 2 year diploma course. While I was studying, the RHS celebrated its 200 year anniversary with the opening of a brand new 3000m² Glasshouse. I was lucky enough to be on placement in this area during the build-up

to opening, and developed a love for gardening under glass. After completing my course, I stayed on, working in the glasshouse looking after the temperate section, specialising in tree ferns. After a few years I became the team leader for the glasshouses at RHS Garden Wisley and managing this section. The glasshouses here are such an inspirational part of the garden, displaying many, many different and wonderful plants that most people would have never have seen and giving our visitors a small sense of what it may be like to walk in a rain forest or see fully grown cacti. After about 5 years I was ready for a new challenge, and the opportunity to venture back outside was presented. I became Garden Manager for Hardy Ornamental, my current role. This remit sees me managing 3 of the garden teams at RHS Garden Wisley that look after some of the most beautiful parts of the garden, from Oakwood, the historic heart of the garden, an old oak woodland garden that predates Wisley itself, to our recently completed Oudolf Landscape, a newly developed garden designed by Piet Oudolf showcasing a complex and diverse range of perennials and grasses. The exciting thing

about RHS Garden Wisley is that it is such a dynamic garden, which displays so many different types of gardening, so there’s always something new and interesting to see.

What does your role involve and what does a typical day look like?

My role is an interesting mix of horticultural development and managing people. I work closely with my garden teams to maintain and develop the gardens at RHS Garden Wisley, to create an exciting and engaging experience for our visitors. My typical day varies greatly, from area walks with team members planning the upcoming work to planning long term garden projects and the resourcing required, to preparing plant idents for our horticultural students and giving guided tours to our RHS members. No two days are the same.

What do you love most about your job?

RHS Garden Wisley is quite unique as a garden as it changes and evolves quite quickly in gardening terms, and we get to experiment and demonstrate a wide range of gardening

styles. I also love seeing my teams develop and “grow” in their roles, and creating some wonderful horticulture.

Do you work with a wider team and what achievements are you most proud of?

One of my proudest achievements to date is the creation of Clear Lake, this was a 2 year project to create a large lake that acts as a rain water store that we use during the summer to irrigate parts of the garden. This project involved working with many different teams and was a great collaborative effort. The new lake holds roughly 9000 m³ of

rain water which is harvested off our recently built Hilltop science and learning facility. As well as having an important water resource to help safeguard the garden against our increasingly dry summers, it was an excellent opportunity to create something beautiful. I was lucky enough to design the tree planting schemes and two beautiful oak framed lakeside shelters. It’s a part of the garden I’m truly proud of.

What do you find most inspiring day to day?

I find inspiration from seeing the garden change with the seasons, as plants come into growth this can be noticing a new

flower for the first time, or our visitors enjoying a part of the garden and learning something new to try in their own spaces.

Are you a city, town, or country person?

I’m very much a country person, I’m originally from north Shropshire, and spent most of my childhood outside playing on my grandparents small holding.

What’s your favourite food or drink along or within easy reach of the Great West Way?

One of my favourite places to visit on the Great West Way is Iford Manor Gardens in Wiltshire. It is hidden away at the bottom of a peaceful valley, just 15 minutes from Bath, it’s the most beautiful and characterful garden. Dating back to the Domesday Book, the gardens were largely designed by renowned Edwardian landscape architect Harold Peto, and blends Italian, Byzantine, Ancient Roman and Oriental garden inspirations, together with architecture and classical sculpture. As well as this beautiful garden, Iford Manor has a superb restaurant, which is linked to the estate farm, serving

some of the nicest food I’ve ever eaten!

What do you think makes the Great West Way special?

The Great West Way is a wonderful route to experience some of the best attractions this part of the country has to offer.

Please describe your perfect adventure on the Great West Way?

Hopping in the car with the dog (Freddie) and finding one of the many excellent gardens which can be found on the Great West Way like Cranbourne Manor or South Wood farm, then heading off to a country pub for a peaceful lunch.

Cheddar Gorge

Situated in the depths of the Mendip Hills and within easy reach of the Great West Way, Cheddar Gorge is one of England’s most spectacular natural landmarks. The stunning gorge boasts awe-inspiring cliffs, holding fascinating secrets of prehistoric times. The gorge has a large variety of attractions within it, accompanied by plenty of trails to explore on foot and a twisty road to discover by car. Venture up Jacob’s Ladder with your furry friend, a 274-step climb offering rewarding panoramic views of the Somerset Levels. Here, you can continue your hike along the Cliff-Top Walk, a 3-mile circular route. You might even be

lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Cheddar’s famous goats along the cliffs!

Horse-Drawn Boat Trips

For a truly authentic dog-friendly experience, the Kennet Horse Boat Company offers relaxing boat trips down the famous Kennet and Avon Canal. Their horse-drawn boat tours offer a unique and environmentally friendly journey as you explore Berkshire’s beautiful countryside. With few left in the UK, this historic experience showcases horses walking alongside the canal, slowly guiding you downstream.

The tradition of horse-drawn boats dates back as far as 1760, when it was commonplace for horses to pull boats. While some may be able to drift on their own, the boats would often come upon stretches of water that required an extra bit of power to sail through. As such a simple and effective method of transportation, horse-drawn barges continued well into the 1960s, speaking to its popularity. Dogs can be brought along providing they’re well-behaved and kept on a lead, but it’s worth noting that they admit them at their discretion.

Stonehenge

The fascinating monument that keeps on giving. Every few years we seem to learn something new about its mesmerising history, and it continues to puzzle even the greatest minds. The world-famous stone circle is a truly wonderful sight to behold and will certainly get you thinking about its purpose and history. You might ask yourself how the stones got from their original location to the circle just outside Salisbury, or how they managed to balance the huge stones so perfectly that they’ve remained in place for thousands of years.

When you’re out in the field admiring Stonehenge’s construction, the good news is that your furry friend can be right by your side. While they’re not allowed to be present in the Monument Field itself, they are permitted throughout any of the National Trust’s Open Access fields, with the exception of certain designated areas where sheep may be grazing.

Vale of Pewsey

If you’re looking to visit quaint historic villages and majestic landscapes, the Vale of Pewsey in Wiltshire is an excellent

destination. The history of the fascinating vale dates back to the 6th century, with some settlements thought to be even older. There are plenty of authentic local pubs, shops and cafes to choose from as you explore its vast network of ancient footpaths. Or perhaps you’d prefer to head straight to the most well-known attraction in Pewsey – the White Horse carvings. Your dog is sure to appreciate the natural paths and will certainly be tired out after your day of exploration.

Windsor Great Park

Part of the Windsor Estate, Windsor Great Park offers 4,800 acres of ancient Royal landscape, featuring forests, grasslands, lakes, and gardens. Here, you will discover 1,000 years of history with the company of your furry friend.

And, we like to think of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead as ‘London’s Country Estate’ – a relaxing haven, near enough to enjoy the hustle, bustle, sights and sounds of the capital.

Windsor Castle dominates our skyline and a visit should be top of your list. It’s a breath-taking place to explore – no wonder it was the recent setting for two royal weddings.

You can’t say the word Windsor without conjuring up images of the world's oldest and largest inhabited castle, royalty, horse racing, Changing the Guard, the River Thames and Eton College. Windsor thrives on its royal patronage, rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture and beautiful natural scenery. Add to this an abundance of quaint oneof-a-kind shops and culinary scene headed by the likes of Heston Blumenthal and you’ll have a reasonable idea of the treats in store for you in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Windsor Castle is one of the official residences of His Majesty The King as well as a venue for ceremonial and state occasions. The castle spreads over the equivalent of 269 tennis courts and is more like a fortified town. It contains magnificent State Apartments furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection and St George's Chapel, a Royal Peculiar and one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings in England. It is the burial place of 11 monarchs including Queen Elizabeth II, Henry VIII and Charles I.

Windsor is the only place outside London where you can watch Changing the Guard, the process where a new Castle guard exchanges duty with the old guard. Usually

accompanied by a band, it takes place throughout the year, weather permitting and except Sundays (check the schedule which changes month by month). Outside of the castle, the best viewing point is the Corn Exchange at Windsor Guildhall at around 10.50am. From inside the Castle, you can watch the actual changing ceremony outside the Guardroom in the Lower Ward at 11am.

The Royal Borough is a truly tasty destination with a wide range of fabulous restaurants, bars and cafes. The village of Bray may be small but it packs a culinary punch as it is home to a selection of restaurants and pubs boasting seven Michelin stars between them! Think of the Roux family and Heston Blumenthal and you’ll find them both here in the Waterside Inn and the Fat Duck respectively.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is also home to not one but two famous racecourses – Ascot and Royal Windsor – putting racing very much at its heart and soul. Queen Elizabeth II had a lifelong passion for horses and so it follows that racing and other equestrian events are hugely popular in the Windsor area.

While out riding, Queen Anne (subject of the recent film The Favourite) noticed the potential that the open heathland around Ascot, not more than 5 miles from Windsor Castle, would be ideal for “horses to gallop at full stretch”. She subsequently founded the world-famous racecourse here in 1711. Today Royal Ascot, is a national institution and centrepiece of the British social calendar. The royal party attends each day, arriving in horse-drawn carriages.

There is yet more to discover just across the bridge in Eton. Famous of course for its boys’ school which dominates the north end of the town, there is much to discover. Take a stroll along the High Street and back and

you will find hidden gems such as an original marker for the first-ever modern marathon route from Windsor to London from the 1908 London Olympics, Sir Anthony Gormley’s Edge II statue attached to Common Lane House and Timbralls where James Bond creator, Ian Fleming, lived during his time at Eton. Coincidentally the lamp post outside the house is numbered 007!

Marlow is without a doubt one of the loveliest locations on the River Thames. Situated on a broad sweep of the river between Henley and Windsor and alongside the woodlands of the Chiltern Hills the charming Georgian market town is made up of historic streets, boutique shops and plenty of character. Visitors will recognise Marlow for it’s iconic suspension bridge which, originally built in 1832 spans the River Thames and provides a grand entrance in to the town.

Further north, don’t miss the learned university city of Oxford. Of course, it’s not all lounging around in the Bodleian Library, pretending to study. Discover some of the city’s more unexpected attractions too, like the Pitt Rivers Museum, full of alarming anthropomorphic artefacts, or The Eagle and Child pub, where C.S. Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien used to meet and swap stories. There’s also bikes, board game cafés and strange sculptures to find – including a curious headless shark.

Next stop from Reading taking the north west route is Swindon, home to STEAM, the Museum of the Great Western Railway. Here you’ll see famous locomotives from throughout the railway’s history, drive a train simulator and work the signals in the interactive GWR signal box. Armed with your new skills – and perhaps a souvenir or three to take home – head next to Chippenham, a historic market town in the rural county of Wiltshire. On the banks of the River Avon, Chippenham is a flourishing small town, with an enticing market to explore on Fridays and Saturdays on the High Street and plenty of proper English pubs.

If you’re in the mood for more city sights, Salisbury, just off the touring route is a city that embraces everything arts and culture. Visit Mompesson House, the 18th-century property featured in the all-star film version of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility (1995).

There’s also Salisbury Playhouse, Salisbury Museum and Salisbury Cathedral – or pop into the Old Sarum Airfield Museum where you can sit in more aircraft cockpits than anywhere else in the UK! And of course those sacred stones aren’t too far away…

In between and around the big cities sit lots of other interesting towns – their smaller size making them easy to explore on foot in a spare morning or afternoon.

Be sure to stop off at the Bridge Tea Rooms in Bradford on Avon, double winner of the UK Tea Guild's 'Top Tea Place', and one of the UK's finest spots for afternoon tea with a list of regal afternoon teas including the Queen Victoria.

WEST OF THE GREAT WEST WAY ROUTE BERKSHIRE

The next stops from Reading taking a directly west route are Newbury and Hungerford. You’re travelling through the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty here so press that nose up against the window and pick out the perfect place for a stroll.

There are several short loop walks from Hungerford (an ancient town also known for its antique shops) or you could walk the nine miles to Newbury along the canal.

Once you’re in Newbury you could stop for a flutter –there’s a world-class racecourse here.

BATH AND BRISTOL

Your final calling point en route to Bristol is the beautiful city of Bath. Only around 15 minutes apart by train, Bath and Bristol are very different. Bath is known for its Roman Baths and Georgian architecture, while Bristol is famous for its street art and music scene. You’ll want plenty of time in both cities. In Bath, take a stroll past honey-hued Georgian buildings and a dip in the natural hot springs that bubble up from the ground. Don’t miss the original Roman Baths, too, not to mention the Jane Austen Centre, where afternoon tea is served Regency style.

Bristol, where the Great West Way starts or ends is a vibrant city where you can climb aboard the last Concorde ever made (built right here in Bristol) at Aerospace Bristol, and discover the ship that changed the world at one of Brunel’s other famous creations, the SS Great Britain, the world’s first great ocean liner.

Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge is here too, beckoning you on along the River Avon and out to Avon Gorge. Set foot atop this world-famous bridge and quietly thank Brunel for the journey he made possible – along the Great West Way by rail.

HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA

Taking place in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, the Henley Royal Regatta is one of the world's most prestigious rowing events and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The regatta

is held over five days, and features over 200 races for rowers from around the globe. The event is known for its strict dress code, with rowers and spectators alike dressing in traditional boating attire – so be sure to dress to impress!

BRISTOL PRIDE

▶ 29 June–14 July

Bristol Pride is an annual festival that celebrates LGBTQ+ culture and diversity. It features a variety of events, including live music, performances, art exhibitions, and a parade. Pride Day will take place on Saturday 13 July, last year scissor sisters front man Jake Shears was the headline together with international icon Natalie Imbruglia making a performance. Headliners for 2024 are yet to be anounced.

KEW THE MUSIC

▶ 9–14 July 2024

The stunning UNESCO World Heritage site, Kew Gardens hosts six nights of laidback picnic concerts, from big names in every genre of music from pop and rock to classical and jazz. The first artists have been announced, with Mika headlining

the concert series 9 July, Passenger 11 July, and JLS on 12 July. You can enjoy an evening in conversation with Monty Don and see multi-award-winning Irish singer-songwriter Ronan Keating, who first rose to fame as part of the iconic boyband Boyzone in the early 1990s.

Established as one of the most spectacular summer concert venues in the UK, the shows are a hit amongst all generations of music lovers. Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drink or can enjoy the open-air bars and street food stalls.

THE BRISTOL HARBOUR FESTIVAL

▶ 19–21 July 2024

This cultural celebration is one of the largest free festivals in the UK, taking place in Bristol it attracts over 250,000 visitors each year. The festival features a variety of activities, including live music performances, street theater, dance, circus acts, and other outdoor performances. Visitors can also enjoy a variety of food and drink stalls, as well as a range of family-friendly activities such as face painting and storytelling – and of course the habour itself, watching the boats and ships, and enjoying water-based activities, or taking part in boat rides.

More than just an airshow, The Royal International Air Tattoo is a three-day event that will overwhelm your senses. From the roar of jet engines ripping through the air to the cheer of the crowd line – it’s an experience like no other with sights and sounds that will leave your heart racing and raise the hairs on the back of your neck.

One of the world’s greatest airshows, over 300 aircraft typically take part in the flypasts and aerial acrobatics.

WOMAD FESTIVAL

▶ 25–28 July 2024

Global fiesta of music, dance, art and food taking place in Charlton Park, Malmesbury. Line-up for 2024 includes Young Fathers, Amadou & Mariam, Gogol Bordello, Sampa the Great, Alison Goldfrapp and Baaba Maal. Wander through the festival and discover little known gems to musical legends. With over 50 countries represented at WOMAD, you never know who you will find. Once the sun goes down head to one fo the late night venues, the d&b Soundscape, Molly’s or Disco Bear and keep dancing ’til dawn.

BRISTOL INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA

▶ 9–11 August 2024

This iconic event has been a steadfast in the UK’s event calendar for more than four decades. With the city of Bristol playing the best matched host as the birthplace of ballooning in Europe, and now the capital of the sport worldwide. The fiesta is a free to attend three-day event that celebrates the city and its heritage links to the remarkable world of hot air ballooning. The rolling hills of Ashton Court on the outskirts of the city of Bristol are home to a temporary playground of entertainment, and a stage set ready and waiting for over 100 hot air balloons to take flight.

One of England’s biggest and best-loved music festivals, featuring big-name acts from around the world. The festival will return to Reading's Richfield Avenue (and Leeds' Bramaham Park) with Liam Gallagher, Blink 182, Gerry Cinnamon, Lana Del Rey, Catfish and more.

THE WINDSOR FESTIVAL

The Windsor Festival was first held in 1969 and has since become one of the UK's leading cultural events, attracting top musicians, artists, and performers from around the world. The festival takes place in the town of Windsor featuring a wide range of events, including classical music concerts, jazz performances, literary talks, art exhibitions, and more. Many of the events take place in Windsor Castle and St. George's Chapel, making it a unique and special experience.

DEVIZES CONFETTI BATTLE AND COLOUR RUSH

A celebration that dates back over a century, no one can remember the first official battle but its roots date back to the old Devizes Carnival in 1913, where confetti and rose petals were thrown by the crowd at people in the procession. Devizes Carnival’s Confetti Battle is surely the most fun you can have with torn up bits of coloured paper. Colour Rush, a friendly charity raising fun-run takes place on the same day.

HERITAGE OPEN DAYS

England’s largest festival of history and culture takes place across England, celebrating the country's rich cultural heritage and history. During the event, thousands of historic buildings, heritage sites, and landmarks open their doors to the public for free, giving visitors the chance to explore and learn about England's past. The event is held over four days and features a wide range of activities, including guided tours, exhibitions, talks, and special events. Highlights along the Great West Way include Reading Synagogue, Sevington Victorian School in Wiltshire and the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust in Bristol - with many more besides!

BY BIKE AND FOOT

Hiring a bike and cycling along the canal, countryside paths and trails, taking a walk through picturesque villages and visiting our three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and three UNESCO World Heritage sites by foot is a beautifully scenic experience.

Whether you’re up for a lengthy hike in the Cotswolds, a cycle ride racing down the 13.7km (8.5 miles) steeply twisting Swinley Red trail with its berms, drops and white-knuckle descents, or just fancy a potter around some village antique shops, walking and cycling is a wonderful way to explore.

You can cycle the entire length of the Great West Way via National Cycle Route 4, which links up regional cycle routes such as the Thames Valley Cycle Route and the Kennet & Avon Cycle Route. The National Trails website gives details of longdistance walking trails along the route: The Cotswold Way, The Ridgeway and the Thames Path.

Go to Sustrans for more (shorter) cycle routes on the National Cycle Network, in and around the touring route. There are also some excellent routes along the Wiltshire Cycleway, including a picturesque 15.3k between Corsham and Bradford on Avon.

BY BOAT AND ON WATER

The Kennet & Avon Canal is a wonderful way to travel along part of the Great West Way. This ribbon of beauty and history stretches between Reading and Bristol and is looked after by the Canal & River Trust. Slow down and enjoy all 87 miles of the Kennet & Avon Canal as part of your Great West Way adventure, using our Kennet & Avon Canal map

Hire a boat or hop on a barge tour for the ultimate experience in slow travel. Multiple companies operate along the River Thames and the Kennet & Avon Canal. Visit Thames and The Kennet & Avon Canal Trust are useful places to start.

You can canoe, kayak or book one of the numerous boat trips. Passing through countryside, market towns and picturesque villages, the canal offers an abundance of natural beauty, fascinating wildlife, outstanding canal structures, fabulous vistas and heritage galore. The lazy pop pop pop of the engine while you travel slowly through attractive towns like Hungerford, quaint villages such as Wootton Rivers and architectural masterpieces like Bath.

Of course, the famous Caen Hill Lock Flight in Devizes is a real wow – look up from the bottom of the 16 locks that form the main ‘staircase’ – now that’s one way to get boats to travel uphill.

Ways to travel the Great West Way

A road trip adventure along the Great West Way allows you to linger as long as you want in each destination, and even venture off on a complete tangent if the mood takes you – take a look at our suggested itineraries to help you make a start.

The main road between London and Bristol is the A4 Great West Road, based on an ancient horse track and later, one of King Charles I’s Great Roads, which facilitated the establishment of the British postal service – The Royal Mail.

The A4 cuts a fairly direct path between the two cities, allowing you to travel the distance in less than 2 hours 30 minutes if you wanted to. Of course, if you’re travelling by car, half the pleasure is being able to pull off and explore whenever you like.

Wherever you decide to base yourself along the touring route, there’ll also be charming country lanes and winding rural roads to enjoy. Jump in the car and see where you end up.

You may find the AA’s Route Planner tool useful for planning your road trip. Also, our pages on car hire and travel tips could be of interest – especially if this is your first time driving in the UK.

Making tracks on the Great West Way can point you at endless amounts of history and fun facts to be discovered along its length from London to Bristol. In one go the journey is just 1hr 40min, but by stopping off you can explore the route in your own time turning it into a holiday adventure of a lifetime.

Relax and journey along the Great West Way using the Great West Way Discoverer pass. It includes unlimited Off-Peak train travel from London Paddington with Great Western Railway along the route to Bristol Temple Meads via Reading and Swindon, or Newbury and Pewsey, with options to branch off towards Salisbury via Westbury (or London Waterloo to Salisbury with South Western Railway). It also includes unlimited travel on listed bus services along the routes. The rail route is marked on the map with a green line. Choose from an East, West or Global one-day or seven-day ticket to enjoy your Great West Way adventure.

You can purchase the Great West Way Discoverer pass online at GWR.com or from your local station. They come in the form of a standard orange ticket, clearly showing the route you have purchased and whether it is valid for one day or seven. If you are travelling from overseas, international passes (similar to a BritRail pass) can be purchased online at ACPRail.com or via your travel agent, where discounted international rates apply and with no offpeak travel time restrictions.

BY BUS AND COACH

If you’d rather someone else was driving, or aren’t able to drive, the extensive bus and coach services along the Great West Way will come as a relief. They can also be a very cost effective choice, useful for budget travel.

There are multiple coach services between London and Bristol by companies including National Express, Megabus, Stagecoach and Eurolines. Once you’ve reached your destination, you can access various local bus servicessome travelling to fairly remote rural locations.
