EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
-3-
ELECTROCHEMICAL ACTIVITIES IN LITHUANIA AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO THE ISE Electrochemical science has a long and storied tradition in Lithuania. It is a key field of study at the Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC) in Vilnius, which houses a large electrochemical research facility where numerous specialised techniques are taught and practiced. In addition to this institution, significant electrochemical tests and studies are conducted in the Faculty of Chemistry and the Center for Life Sciences at Vilnius University. Other universities, such as Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and Kaunas University of Technology, also use electrochemical methods in a number of applications.
E L
P M
Lithuania has had a regional ISE group for more than 20 years. Well-known electrochemists like Professors Algirdas P. Vaskelis, Eimutis Juzeliunas and Rimantas Ramanauskas have all served as Regional Representatives of the ISE. Currently, the Regional Representative is Professor Rasa Pauliukaite. Lithuanian scientists are not only active ISE members who take part in ISE-sponsored meetings and conferences, they are also regular contributors to the renowned international journal “Electrochimica Acta”.
A S
Lithuania has significant experience in organising international conferences related to the field of electrochemistry. In addition to the 1986 edition of the Annual ISE meeting in Vilnius, the city has organised and hosted the ISE’s “Theodor Grotthuss Electrochemistry Conference” and the “Chemistry and Chemical Technology 2016”, dedicated to the 200th and 210th anniversaries of the publication of the first theory of electrolysis by Theodor Grotthuss - a world-famous scientist who spent most of his life in Lithuania. Special issues of “Electrochimica Acta” were entirely devoted to these conferences, which were both considered great successes. With these events in mind, it seems as though the 2019 Topical Meeting would be a good occasion to meet in Lithuania again. Local Organising Committee Chair: Members:
Prof. Rasa Pauliukaite - Regional Representative (FTMC, Vilnius) Prof. Rimantas Ramanauskas (FTMC, Vilnius) Prof. Albertas Malinauskas (FTMC, Vilnius) Prof. Eimutis Juzeliūnas (KU, Klaipeda) Prof. Gintaras Valinčius (VU, Vilnius) Prof. Arūnas Ramanavičius (VU, Vilnius) Prof. Eugenijus Valatka (KTU, Kaunas) Dr. Jurgita Juodkazytė (FTMC, Vilnius) Dr. Asta Grigucevičienė (FTMC, Vilnius)

WELCOME TO VILNIUS
- 10 -
WHY VILNIUS? Accessible Central Location Lying at the crossroads of East and West, being the geographical centre of Europe - Vilnius is never more than three hours away from any European destination by air, with an airport less than 15 minutes away from the city centre. The Railway and Bus Stations are located centrally with a fast and efficient public transport or taxi connection to the main city spots and hotels. The public transport system is both reliable and affordable.
E L
P M Up-and-Coming
A S
Lithuania is among the ‘fastest growing innovators’ in Europe. Vilnius is internationally recognized as one of the most knowledge-intensive and innovative cities – a city as ambitious as you are. Vilnius and Lithuania in general is proud of record scientific achievements in the ICT, electronics, life sciences, shared services, manufacturing and clean-tech sectors.
First-Class Meeting Facilities
Vilnius, with its first-class business infrastructure along with unique cultural riches, has become an attractive option for international meeting planners and event organisers. A refreshingly diverse choice of hotels, modern and the most up-todate conference halls as well as non-traditional venues, including centuries-old mansions, castle halls, rebuilt royal palaces, modern glass towers, big arenas and large open-air squares are ready to accommodate needs of any meeting or event.
- 11 -
Fast & Open Whether it’s launching a business, organising an event, getting online or meeting up. With average WiFi speeds of 16.1 Mbps, Lithuania beats its northern neigbour Estonia, Singapore, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Being the world’s best-connected city, Vilnius offers free WiFi hotspots in hotels, venues and public spaces.
E L
Compact
Vilnius charms with its labyrinthine, UNESCO renowned Old Town, sleek business district, an elegant city centre with many open squares and parks, as well as historic suburbs. It is a compact, pedestrian friendly city where major meeting facilities, hotels, cozy restaurants and important city sights are all within easy reach.
P M
A S
Safe, Peaceful & Green
Lithuania is one of the safest countries in the world. According to the Global Peace Index, it is safer than the USA, the UK and France. There is less than 3 % risk of being harmed by an earthquake, storm, flood or drought here. Vilnius is rated as the safest capital in the Baltic States with relatively low levels of noise. Nearly half of Vilnius is green space - about 3 times more than Amsterdam, Berlin and Warsaw. Drinking water is among the cleanest in Europe and Vilnius can boast of the cleanest air of all major EU cities.
An Open History Book Vilnius is like an open book, leaving vivid illustrations of the history of European styles – from the Gothic to the Empiric. The Old Town of Vilnius is among the largest in Eastern and Central Europe, included in the UNESCO world heritage list. Heavy stone streets, letters of tiles, stained glass illustration, massive metal gates – the title pages. It is really hard to put the book aside… maybe because the history of Vilnius is still living.
