The family’s sense of stewardship is expressed through their generosity, and they don’t make a distinction when it comes to communities in need. “If [the war] was happening in Russia, we’d try to do the same thing,” said Tim Martin. Getting a quarter-million pounds of rice to Eastern Europe is no small feat. Missouri Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe said the Martin family contacted Governor Mike Parson’s office with an offer to donate the rice, but they needed a way to get it to hungry people in the region. Kehoe knew Convoy of Hope could do the job. The lieutenant governor was on site when Convoy picked up the first of several truckloads.
“Convoy of Hope has just been an inspiration in helping us fix this piece of the puzzle,” Kehoe said. “We’re watching them help the people in Ukraine today, but the reality is, the millions of people they’ve helped from here in Missouri is something we should all be very proud of.”

Doree Donaldson, Vice President of Convoy:Women and wife of Convoy of Hope President Hal Donaldson, has dedicated her life to helping those in need. Doree visited recently with Hope Quarterly and offered her perspective on how Convoy is empowering women around the world.
2525 see unity and partnership at the heart of Convoy.
HQ: How are you seeing Women’s Empowerment change lives?
Doree: Early on, we were working multiple jobs to support our family and the work of Convoy. We learned that walking hand in hand was important and that being united in mind and heart for the mission was critical. The organization has grown exponentially, but 28 years later I still
HQ: How did your vocational experience prepare you for your current role? Doree: I was a college professor for 19 years, and before that I taught for 10 years in public schools. Teaching creates daily opportunities to help people bring positive change into their lives, and it constantly calls for collaboration. I can see how those experiences equipped me to spearhead Convoy:Women and work with the team to create the exciting opportunities we are seeing today.
Doree: I have met so many women who faced loss and poverty, and the opportunities created by Women’s Empowerment have helped them turn their lives around. I remember talking with Dorcas, a graceful and humble Maasai woman, in Tanzania. She had lost her husband in a tragic plane crash and was thrust into poverty with her children when her larger family disowned her. She entered Convoy’s job training program, and that’s when I met her for the first time. I returned to Tanzania 18 months later and hardly recognized her. Dorcas radiated joy and walked with confidence. She now owns a successful jewelry business, supports her family, and believes in herself again. I think of her often and pray for her continued success.
Q&A
HQ: You and Hal have been with Convoy from the very beginning. What stands out to you about that first chapter in the organization’s history?
HQ: Dorcas’ story is representative of so many others who are finding renewed hope. What are your hopes for Convoy:Women in the future? Doree: I want to see a movement of compassion that crosses all barriers and connects women from all walks of life — women who are compelled to use their voices on behalf of those who have been silenced. Awareness is growing each year through events like International Women’s Day, and I believe we will continue to see more women linking arms than ever before.
HQ: Can you start by giving us an overview of Convoy:Women? Doree: Convoy:Women is a group of advocates for the women and girls that Convoy serves through the Women’s Empowerment initiative. We provide a variety of opportunities to empower women and girls. Whether you want to attend an event, pack baby care kits, leverage social media, or collect spare change, there’s an avenue for you to make a real difference.
