Sustainable Transformation Poverty is complex and requires a holistic and integrated programming approach.
This is why Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment, Children’s Feeding, and Agriculture initiatives are key to our strategy. Our international programs are designed to work together to address poverty from multiple fronts. When we partner with women to build on the capacity and resources they already possess, it positions them to make more strategic, independent life choices that benefit the entire family. When the needs of a family are addressed, the resilience of an entire community grows.

The
Motivation Why Women? 821 million+
More than 821 million people are food insecure globally. The majority are women and minors. Many are making less than $1.90 per day.
60-80%
Women produce between 60% and 80% of the food in low- and middle-income countries.
150 million
If women had the same access to resources as men, the number of hungry people in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million people due to productivity gains.
90%
Women invest up to 90% of their earnings back into their households and manage it toward nutrition, food, health care, school, and incomegenerating activities. This helps break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
70 million
There are 70 million child brides in the world, equating to 1 in 3 girls within developing countries.
20%
A girl’s income increases up to 20% for every year she stays in primary school. Continued education delays marriage and is a deterrent to women becoming victims of violence.

Women’s
Empowerment The Mission
• Encouraging women around the world to realize their value and reach their potential through job training and education. When women are given the opportunity to generate income, they impact their families and their country’s economic standing. We want to empower women to make strategic, independent life choices through community-based training and nontraditional, microenterprise development.
• Reaching at-risk girls aged 10 to 18 who live in impoverished communities. Teens receive education in areas of self-esteem, body image, gender-based violence, and more.

Our
Approach
STRATEGIES
ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT
Provides women with seed capital and the tools to start their own businesses.
Convoy of Hope partners with local churches and communities around the world to empower the vulnerable. One way we accomplish this goal is by addressing the health, diet, income, education, and societal status of mothers — areas that have a direct impact on the overall well-being of their children and are often the root causes of undernourishment.
We want to see women and girls reach their God-given potential, recognize their value, and know God’s love for them.
GIRLS’ EMPOWERMENT
Educates girls in the areas of self-esteem, positive body image, and more.
FAMILY HEALTH EMPOWERMENT
Exists to support and resource families.
Dorcas runs a successful jewelry business in Tanzania. 07
Economic Empowerment Economic Empowerment groups equip women with financial education, vocational training, cooperative saving groups, and startup capital. After receiving training and the distribution of capital for small business startups, women participate in incomegenerating activities as they launch their own small business. Every activity is monitored by Convoy of Hope team members to ensure support and success. At the onset of the program, all women engage in self-esteembuilding activities along with education in basic literacy and numeracy, family health and nutrition, family planning, and the prevention of communicable diseases (HIV, in particular).
Personal health includes hygiene, nutrition, self-esteem, and life skills. Training in financial skills incorporates market analysis, budgeting, saving, and both profit and loss. Vocational training encompasses hands-on small business education, seed capital for startup businesses, and follow-up to ensure success.
Tsegay ETHIOPIA Economic Empowerment
Tsegay has always been an entrepreneur at heart. However, without the right direction and education, her business began to fail. “It was a tiresome job,” Tsegay said, thinking back to when she used to sell injera, an Ethiopian flatbread. “There was no demand.” After participating in Women’s Empowerment, market research led Tsegay to start a lucrative new dairy farm.
“By selling milk and butter, I am living well now,” she said. “I am feeding my four children well and sending them to school. I am also saving money in a bank.” Tsegay’s goal is to continue expanding her dairy farm so that her children can take over when they are older.
“I would like to thank this organization and its supporters,” Tsegay said. 08

Family Health Empowerment In Family Health Empowerment groups, women attend educational sessions where they are trained in nutrition, health and hygiene, literacy, small-scale community agriculture, craftsmanship, and cooking. Participants who display consistent attendance receive a month’s worth of food to help supplement their diet at home. This provides incentive for women to come and learn, and it helps Convoy address the nutritional deficiencies of children not in school. Caretakers, especially those who are pregnant, are provided with vitamins for both themselves and their children. All of the participants’ children under 5 years old are monitored through their Body Mass Index to strive toward a reduction in malnutrition and protect healthy development.
Linnette EL SALVADOR Economic Empowerment
At an early age, an accident robbed Linnette of motor function in one leg. “I did not feel I had anyone in my life to look out for me,” she said. Linnette began participating in Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment program and learned important skills and values to help her start a business and realize her self-worth. Now, she is the proud owner of a successful pupusa stand and is an inspiration to her entire community.

Through Women’s Empowerment, Sima learned how to run a business and manage finances. Sima soon opened a store, which provides well for her and her family. She learned important values, such as self-esteem and the importance of community, and found others who could relate to her story.
“Sometimes it seems like a dream,” Sima said. “Many sleepless nights, endless tears, fear, and anger all gone away. I feel like I was born again.” 11

Girls’ Empowerment Girls’ Empowerment brings educational programs to schools and communities. Sessions include contextually appropriate topics on self-esteem, gender-based violence, and harmful beliefs and practices.
Jadi
TANZANIA Girls’ Empowerment
In places like Tanzania, girls hold the lowest place in society. This often exposes them to domestic violence and harmful societal practices.
But she joined Girls’ Empowerment, stayed in school, and even became the leader of her group. Now, she is in college and is active in her community.
Jadi was raised by a single mother who passed away when Jadi was in high school, so she knows how hard it can be to overcome those challenges.
Because of Girls’ Empowerment, hundreds of girls like Jadi are realizing their value and reaching their full potential.

Alexa HONDURAS Girls’ Empowerment
When the fruits and vegetables Alexa raised were devoured by bugs, she and her family had to pay high prices to replace the food they lost. Thankfully, her school had both a Girls’ Empowerment group and a Convoy of Hope Agriculture program.
“I’ve learned to see myself with love, to respect myself, to see myself with value, and to love myself just the way I am,” says Alexa. Empowered with that knowledge, she learned how to make an organic pesticide. Her crops are thriving, and she’s excelling at her studies, tutoring classmates, and serving as student body president — all because of the security she feels within herself and about where her next meal will come from.
