Seventeen years ago, Ed persuaded me to quit a perfectly good job as an executive chef to cook these homemade frozen meals. All I had to do was figure out how to make them taste great (which took rather longer than either of us imagined). In the kitchen was me with my first employee, Spencer Reader. Aged just 16, and deaf since childhood, Spencer struck me as a smashing lad who needed a chance. I had to promise his parents I’d look after him. From the off, Spencer threw himself into cooking. I worked him hard (the two of us did everything), and we had great fun. In many ways, Spencer is what COOK is all about. Our remarkable food is made for you by some amazing people I’m proud to call my colleagues. When you see their names on our labels, you can be sure they’ve put their hearts and souls into making great-tasting food. And Spencer? He’s still with us today, cooking up a storm.
