DAVID BECKHAM PACKS HIS BAGS Trouble in paradise? David Beckham was spotted outside Gare du Nord station in Paris on January 18, with his travel bag in tow. And while Posh was also seen outside the station, she had nothing more than a small handbag. Becks’ head hung low as he kept one hand in his pocket, before looking back to see Posh following behind. Last year marked the famous couple’s 20th wedding anniversary, with Becks posting a throwback photo from their wedding to his Instagram, along with some family snaps. “WOW 20 years, look what we created,” he wrote. “Love you so much.”

With Today host Karl Stefanovic and his wife Jasmine Yarbrough reportedly expecting their first child, the couple would be looking to close friends and family to support them, while also considering likely candidates for godparents. With Karl’s long-time colleague Richard ‘Dickie’ Wilkins still a close friend of the couple, could the entertainment reporter be asked to fulfil the special role? Dickie, 65, has been a confidant to Karl, with the pair working alongside one another for years. When Karl was unceremoniously booted from Today in 2018, Dickie was outspoken in support of his friend, telling reporters at the time that Karl was “fine”. He has also embraced Karl’s wife Jasmine in recent years, even travelling to Mexico with his girlfriend Virginia Burmeister and son Christian ‘Prince’
Wilkins to celebrate the couple’s lavish 2018 wedding. It’s clear Dickie (pictured with his granddaughter, Isabella Rose) has plenty of experience, after raising his own children and now being a grandad. Could he be about to play a special part in the new baby’s life?

The happy couple told the Daily Telegraph their little one entered the world on January 18 at 9.38am. “I can’t explain how I feel. rown Princess Mary and her husband Prince Frederik have sparked outrage after it was revealed the royal couple have secretly owned a Swiss ski lodge for 10 years. The Danish couple are facing the ire of their nation after Frederik announced Mary and the kids will spend 12 weeks at a villa in Verbier, Switzerland. The prince revealed he and Mary have owned the property for a decade and even rent it out when they aren’t using it. The Danish royal family live on a public allowance, which can only be spent on foreign assets with the approval of parliament. Member of parliament Mai Villadsen told Danish press: “I was very surprised when I found out that the family does not just

The statement also said the villa was paid for with the couple’s personal funds. Danish outlet Her & Nu reports the Verbier property was bought for 10 million Danish krone ($2 million AUD) and is now worth 17m DKK ($3.6m AUD) . rad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were in the mood to celebrate at last week’s SAG Awards – and they wanted the whole world to witness their joy! Incredible backstage images captured the intimate moment when the former married couple excitedly greeted each other before Brad appeared to take Jen’s hand and give her a lingering hand squeeze. Body language expert Dr Louise Mahler noted that this brief but personal moment was highly telling. “Jen’s emotion buckles beneath her body. It is genuine and deep,” explains Dr Mahler. “Look how he smiles and she cries. She cries for all he has been through and he smiles at delight for his win and what he has achieved. “And look how he gently grabs her as she moves away. It is like the touch of a surgeon. There is pressure, but no aggression,” adds Dr Mahler. “It is as though there is an extra depth of communication between them.” In the moment, Brad, 56, and 6

Jen, 50, appeared unable to contain their excitement, with both grinning broadly while Brad clutched his newly received SAG award. But an insider tells New Idea that the candid exchange was no accident. Taking place in front of throngs of photographers, fans and showbiz industry figures, it proved definitively that the pair were no longer willing to keep their relationship under wraps. “They wanted to send a clear message to the world: They love each other very deeply, this new connection they share is growing stronger all the time, and they want the world to know their friendship isn’t going anywhere.” The insider adds that the pair’s affectionate exchange was a “planned” strategic move and was captured in a “semiorganised photo opportunity”.
“It all unfolded like clockwork,” the source explains. “It was something Jen’s team took the lead on, but Brad was happy to go along with it and let her call the shots. “Her team tipped off the photographers who covered the event and they were in position for when Brad and Jen walked into the room to greet each other.” Even before their touchyfeely moment, earlier in

the night Brad gave the biggest indication yet that their relationship was well on track. When asked about it on the red carpet, Brad responded on camera: “I’ll run into Jen. The excitement continued when Jen picked up a gong of her own. Mobile phone footage showed Brad backstage watching Jen on a screen as she delivered her acceptance speech. He even appeared to mouth the words “oh wow” while Jen collected her award. Afterwards, the insider says that the pair “had a great catch-up and retreated to a corner of the party
where they talked about everything and congratulated each other on their awards”. The insider even hinted at talk of the two attending the Oscars Vanity Fair party as a pair – and may even throw a joint Oscars afterparty. “Then they’ll be able to mingle with the cream of Hollywood and hang out with their A-list peers.” Meanwhile, the insider said the pair are elated at “the amazing reaction the photos have gotten”. “Jen’s been sharing positive articles and social media comments and Brad’s just laughing in wonder at how much people still adore their chemistry. “Nobody can remember seeing either of them this relaxed and positive.”

KATE & WILLS
TAKE CHARGE WITH HARRY AND MEGHAN OFFICIALLY OUT, EXPECTATION IS MOUNTING ON THE ROYAL COUPLE
eavy is the head that wears the crown – and future leaders Prince William and Duchess Catherine are said to be feeling the burden of royal responsibility. Following the recent shock decision that saw Harry and Meghan opting to step back as royals for a life of freedom in Canada, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge now appear to have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Royals expert Phil Dampier remarks that the parents of three will be expected to take on more royal responsibility than ever before. “There’s now a lot of burden on them,” remarks Phil. “With the Queen nearly 94, Anne is 70 this year and Charles and Camilla also in their 70s, there’s so much now resting on them.” This increased level of responsibility appeared to commence immediately, with Prince William, 37, and Duchess Kate, 38, hosting the UK-Africa Investment Summit at Buckingham Palace just days after the details of Harry and Meghan’s departure were finalised. William and Kate appeared to take the challenge in their stride as they smiled and met dignitaries while acting as representatives for Queen Elizabeth II at the state occasion. The decision to host the summit in January when the Queen is still on holiday was seen as a deliberate move on the part of the royal family meant to increase Wills’ presence as a future king. “William was always a reluctant king in waiting, but now he seems to accept his fate and he and Kate are taking on more and more duties while bringing up three young children as normally as possible,” says Phil. “It’s a difficult balancing act but they are doing a great job and people can see it.” In his address at the formal event, William came close to acknowledging the elephant in the room – that is, Harry’s recent resignation as a royal. While speaking of the

MEGHAN’S FRIEND SPILLS ALL LIZZIE CUNDY REVEALS THE TRUTH BEHIND MEGHAN’S FEUD WITH KATE
As more information comes to light about Meghan Markle’s secret plan to make it big time in Hollywood following the Sussexes’ split from the royal family, her former pal Lizzie Cundy has revealed what really caused the duchess to have a falling out with Kate Middleton. Chatting to New Idea, the English TV personality says the Duchess of Cambridge became increasingly frustrated with Meghan’s attitude towards her privileged position and feels she ruined her relationship with her brother-in-law, Harry. “Kate wasn’t too amused by the way Meghan was behaving,” Lizzie explains. “You never see Kate whingeing and moaning and she’s had a fair bit of bad press herself, but you don’t see Kate going on TV. Kate does it the right way. Meghan should have taken a leaf out of Kate’s book.” According to Lizzie, Kate also blames Meghan for ruining her once-close relationship with Harry. “Before Meghan came on the scene, Harry, William and Kate were so close. Now Harry
seems to be a different guy. It seems Meghan has alienated him from his friends and family.” Lizzie adds that just like the Queen, Kate’s biggest fear is that Meghan will sell out the monarchy for millions. “The Queen is worried Meghan will go nuclear. She’s worried she will go to the Oprah Winfrey talk shows and spill all the beans on the royal family. “I mean look, already her friends have gone and said the royal family is toxic. I think the Queen had to take firm reins and let them have their way, let them go, because she needed to take control.” Lizzie also claims Meghan’s ultimate goal is to turn herself and Harry into global stars like the Beckhams – and she won’t let anyone, not even the royal family, stand in her way. “Don’t forget, I met Meghan a few years ago and Victoria Beckham was there and Meghan was squealing with excitement that Victoria was in the same building as her,” she recalls. “But I don’t know how they’re going to do this.” 9
AR CHELSY THE STUNNING ZIMBABWEAN JETS INTO LONDON TO COMFORT HARRY
W
Chelsy no doubt wanted to support her ex through this difficult time.
hile Meghan Markle spent her days taking her son Archie and her two dogs for walks in the woods in Canada following the Sussexes’ split from the royal family, it seems Prince Harry was being comforted in the UK by another woman – his ex Chelsy Davy. Before the prince returned to Canada last week to be with his wife and son, it appears that Harry met with his former flame Chelsy, in London. The Zimbabwean jewellery designer was spotted arriving at Heathrow airport to be by Harry’s side just days after he and his wife announced their plans to step back as senior members of the royal family. Chelsy was dressed casually as she arrived in London sporting a black jumper and
blue scarf while she pushed a number of suitcases through the airport. The past few weeks have no doubt been a tumultuous time for Harry. Chelsy undoubtedly wanted to support her ex, who revealed he felt he had “no other option” but to step back from royal life. “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,” he revealed during a dinner for his charity Sentebale. “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.” Of course, it’s unlikely that this difficult time will end soon for the couple, with royal biographer Phil Dampier questioning whether Harry and Meghan’s marriage will last. “Harry has given up a lot,”
Harry dated Chelsy for several years.
10
Sophie shares a close bond with the Queen.
Phil explains. “He is giving up his family, some friends and his association with the military, apart from the Invictus Games. What exactly is he going to do in North America – become a house husband? “I’m sure Meghan is happy … but I’m not sure about Harry. I think they will split up within months.” Chelsy, however, who is said to have stayed in touch with Harry after the pair broke up, would have provided a much-needed shoulder to lean on for the prince during these difficult times. The two have remained close friends since their split, with Chelsy even attending Harry and Meghan’s wedding back in May 2018, and she appeared to shed a tear as she watched the love of her life marry the former actress. “Chelsy was quite emotional about it all,” royals author Katie Nicholl told Vanity Fair. “She was in tears and almost didn’t go to the wedding. In the end, she went and promised Harry she wouldn’t try and gatecrash the party.” Meanwhile, earlier this month, Harry’s former ex Cressida Bonas, who is now engaged to Harry WentworthStanley, broke her silence on her former relationship with the prince. “It feels like a long time ago, so when it comes up it feels strange because I’m in a very different place now – I’m getting married,” she told ES magazine. “I’ve learned a lot. I’m much more comfortable in my own skin. I’m growing.”
SOPHIE WESSEX
THE NEW MEGHAN? THIS ROYAL IS GOING TO HAVE TO STEP UP!
Sophie attended the UK-Africa Investment Summit with Kate.
Now that Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle have stepped aside from the royal family, it’s rumoured that the Queen’s third son, Edward, and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, could take over their duties, meaning Sophie would become the next Meghan. Sophie has always been regarded as one of the Queen’s favourites and now that her children are a bit older, she is in the perfect position to take on
a more prominent role in the royal spotlight and take on some of Meghan’s duties. What’s more, Sophie “doesn’t shy away from a challenge”, claims British royals expert Lydia Starbuck. “Whether it’s cycling her way through Scotland and England in support of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (another cause to which she is deeply committed) or travelling around the UK to lend her support to children’s

charities, Sophie’s schedule is consistent and filled with days that add a depth to royal work,” she said. This week has certainly seen Sophie begin to take on a more prominent role in the family, attending the UK-Africa Investment Summit alongside fellow senior royals, Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate. Is this just a taster of what’s to come in the future?

CHARLES & CAMILLA’S SECRET AUSSIE SON
NEW PATERNITY CASE EXPOSED
I
n a series of explosive developments, Queensland father Simon Charles Dorante-Day has launched an unprecedented new legal case against the palace to prove that Charles and Camilla are his parents. In an exclusive interview with New Idea, Simon reveals he has now started legal proceedings against the Duchy of Cornwall – Prince Charles’ official royal estate – in the High Court of Australia, his most determined bid yet to prove he’s the second-in-line to the throne. The 53-year-old has long claimed to have damning evidence that he is the child of Charles and Camilla, born out
of wedlock in 1966 and adopted to a family who had strong, private ties to the Queen. Says Simon: “My grandmother, who worked for the Queen, told me outright that I was Camilla and Charles’ son many times.” And now after three years of legal wrangling, Simon has taken his case to the High Court in what he describes as the most “significant” step so far in his fight for the truth. “This is most explosive thing that’s ever happened to the palace,” says Simon. “It’s definitely the most significant step I’ve taken so far – I’ve had to force a deadline, hold them to a date, because we need answers.” Speaking with his loving
wife Elvianna, Simon tells New Idea they filed the papers just prior to Christmas – seeking damages against the Duchy of Cornwall for “actions they’ve taken and actions they haven’t taken”. “When I initially filed the papers in Queensland, the court staff laughed at me and bluffed me off,” says Simon. “But when they had to seriously consider it, it was sent down to Sydney for a High Court judge to review and they’re now assessing the case.” But while Simon and Elvianna wait to hear of the next steps in the case, they can’t help but be curious about the timing of their legal action against Charles and Camilla
and Prince Harry’s departure from the royal family just a few weeks later. “The government and the palace would’ve learnt about my High Court submissions just before Christmas, and I have no doubt it would’ve caused panic,” says Simon. “Then we hear of Harry announcing that he was stepping back from the royal family, all the crisis talks at Sandringham Estate with the Queen, Charles and William. It’s all a very big coincidence! “While the whole world was thinking they were talking about Harry, we believe this legal battle would’ve also been on the agenda and discussed. In his farewell speech, Harry himself alluded to there

We need answers.” As part of his new case, Simon has asked for a mediation session and a ‘Statement of Paternity’. “When looking into my options, I received advice that led me to believe that it was best to take my case to the High Court,” says Simon. “When you think of the family we’re dealing with, it makes sense for it to be heard by seven of the land’s most powerful judges.” But in a shocking twist, this
isn’t the only court battle Simon is fighting. The determined father and grandfather has another three cases before the courts – all filed at the end of 2019 – in relation to his employment dramas with the Queensland Government. Simon, an engineer, believes he was unfairly dismissed by the Public Service Commission and is fighting to clear his name. Says Elvianna: “Simon’s case has been fraught with errors – he wasn’t allowed to call witnesses to support his claims, not allowed to present evidence to support his case.” Simon and Elvianna, who are facing a heavy legal workload, think that their case against Charles and Camilla will shock
the palace the most. “We just want the truth,” says Simon. “That’s what I’ve always wanted, that’s all I’ve ever asked for. Just answers. “My family and Elvie’s family deserve to know who my real parents are. I hope we don’t go to court and this is sorted out through mediation, and we

LETTER TO HARRYDEAR
WHY HE SYMPATHISES WITH HIS ALLEGED HALF-BROTHER
J
ust days after Harry’s bombshell announcement that he and Meghan would be leaving the royal family, Simon Dorante-Day penned a letter to the man he believes is his halfbrother. Voicing admiration for Harry’s decision to put his family first, Simon also gives some insight into the troubles the couple may have been facing. Married to Elvianna, an Indigenous Australian,
Simon says he can sympathise with Harry’s situation. Says Simon: “We know how hard it is. When I met Elvianna, it wasn’t acceptable for a white man to be with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander woman. I’ve encountered a lot of hate for being with an Indigenous Australian woman, and I can only imagine what [Harry] has copped for being with someone of mixed race.” Read his full letter here…
The young couple have faced rare challenges.
MEGHAN & HARRY
Firstly, Elvianna, the family and I would like to congratulate you on this brave and exciting new direction and wish you every success with your future plans. We sympathise with and understand fully why you have both decided to take these steps, and we strongly believe you have done the right thing for you, your wife Meghan, your son Archie Harrison and your relationship. I personally admire the courage and fortitude it took to take the actions you have whilst facing the personal assaults that you’ve endured. As I stated in our previous communication via New Idea, being in a cross-cultural relationship is never easy and I don’t think for one minute either Meghan or yourself quite expected the treatment you received. It was hard to watch and not defend and both my wife and I compliment Meghan and yourself for the manner in which you have weathered the storm. Personally, we understand and respect the struggle Meghan has faced in her journey just to succeed at university, follow her dreams
to be a successful actress and escape the crab pot that could have too easily dragged her back before meeting you. For years I have witnessed the pain [that] similar actions, statements and disrespect have had upon my wife, Elvianna, and we can truly relate. Facing discrimination and vilification is never a pleasant ordeal and I am sure you have learnt much from this experience, and this will inform your decisions in future years to come. When the ‘Four Generations of Royals’ photo was released, I immediately thought of you and how it would make you feel. Christmas is a time for all the family to be together, and being the first with your wife and son, I feel it would have been more appropriate to have an inclusive family portrait − I can imagine how this image left you feeling excluded at such a special time as it did for me. From a Commonwealth perspective, I am also delighted that you have chosen Canada for your place of residence, and as Dr Elvianna and I have learnt from travelling around Australia, you

will witness and hear much that you wouldn’t have from the UK; some of which you won’t believe until you see it. You never really know how a place works, or doesn’t work, until you reside there for a while and experience the whole package. This can only benefit the people of Canada and yourself and I am sure you will be greeted with much respect and acceptance by the people of Canada wherever you go. The UK will always be my home, too, and whilst I’ve been away from Portsmouth for many years, it never leaves my mind, and I understand the homesickness you will endure. Thankfully these days we have the internet and social media to keep across our home country’s daily activities. This is at least some comfort! We wish you a prosperous and successful 2020, and hopefully this year we will finally get to meet. Safe journey and may God bless and protect you and your family. • New Idea has made a donation to NSW Rural Fire Service on Simon’s behalf

MEGHAN & HARRY’S
NEW LIFE
Just days after Meghan and Harry’s exit from the royal family was made official, the couple have wasted no time establishing a new life in Canada. Meghan has reportedly snapped up a $40 million waterfront dream house as her young family’s home base. The palatial six-bedroom house is in an exclusive region of West Vancouver and boasts panoramic views across the ocean. A friend of Meghan’s told the Daily Mail the pair are ecstatic to be moving on with the next chapter of their lives. “Meghan has been telling her close friends that this is the best thing that could ever happen to Harry,” the friend told the online publication. The friend added that Meghan and Harry were revelling in their new-found freedom from the royal family. “She said that, like her, his spirit was being crushed and she simply couldn’t stand to see him suffer any more,” the friend revealed.

Meanwhile, Karl and Allison’s rapport has come under the microscope. Viewers initially welcomed the pair’s banterfilled hosting style. But Allison’s likeability could in fact be
off-putting for Karl, who is accustomed to being the most popular host. This was apparent during a 3AW radio chat between Karl and host Neil Mitchell, when Ally gatecrashed the interview midway through. “I don’t let anyone talk to Neil, he’s mine,” Karl said on-air. “Not any more, darl, we’re sharing!” Ally piped back. But the spotlight was firmly back on Karl when he opened up to Neil about the aftermath of his divorce from ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn. “I thought, ‘Well hang on, a lot of people go through this, and why is mine such a big deal?’ I still don’t know why it was,” he said. “I got divorced, I did find

F
ive years ago she won Dancing with the Stars in the US, and now Bindi Irwin is no doubt lending her support to Chloe Lattanzi as she makes a bid for the top spot on the Aussie reality show. Chloe has been pals with the Irwin family for many years, with her mother Olivia Newton-John a close friend and long-time supporter of Bindi’s mum, Terri Irwin. ONJ was the opening performer on Steve Irwin Day at Australia Zoo in 2007, then paid tribute to Terri four years later, calling her “such a special woman” when she was honoured on This Is Your Life. And in 2016, Bindi and Olivia joined forces to raise money for cancer research by taking part in Melbourne’s
Wellness Walk and Research Run. The following year, Bindi sent birthday wishes to the US-based star, posting: “Love you so much. Your strength and grace inspired the world.” Last week Chloe also took to Instagram to pledge her support to her good friend amid the Australian bushfires. She posted a picture of Bindi holding a koala, alongside the caption: “I admire and love the Irwin family so much.” Chloe, whose father Matt Lattanzi was also a dancer and actor, is tipped to be one of the show’s fiercest competitors. Already a skilled dancer, Chloe regularly attends pole dancing classes and recently admitted on Instagram that dancing was her “true place”. She added on
another post: “I love to move my body. It is therapy for me.” Until moving to Portland, Oregon, in 2016 to work alongside her partner James Driskill in his medical marijuana business, Chloe was based in LA where she was attempting to carve out a career in acting and singing. The 34-year-old has been very open about her past struggles with drug addiction and anorexia. In 2016 she opened up about her lack of self-worth during an interview with Access
Hollywood, while promoting her debut album. “I just wasn’t enough, simply put. No matter what I did I just wasn’t enough,” she admitted. After Bindi’s stellar win on the American version of DWTS in 2015, the young wildlife warrior could be giving her pal Chloe some sage advice on how to win the popular show. “Completely having to unlearn the way I used to dance: I love pushing myself, and sometimes I have those moments ‘omg can I do this? ONJ and Bindi I’m a freakin amateur at this! have been close I’ve never done any of this for years. style of dance! I’m insane!’,” Chloe admitted on Instagram.

Dr Jones says Nikki, 38, appears to have had rhinoplasty. “This could’ve cost her up to $15,000. It looks like she gets anti-wrinkle injections and a bit of filler to her cheeks and lips.” Dr Jones estimates the actress and presenter spends $3000 yearly on procedures.
CHARLOTTE CROSBY
It’s believed Charlotte, 29, has had eyebrow tattooing, lip fillers, a nose job, breast augmentation, Botox and dermal fillers in her cheeks. Dr Phoebe Jones estimates she’s spent over $30,000. “My old nose was awful, it was so bad,” the reality TV star told Heat magazine in 2016. “No-one ever noticed my nose. I never got one comment in my whole entire life saying you’ve got a bad nose. But I wasn’t happy with it. I got it done for me.”

DEAN WELLS
TO BE NEXT BACHELOR
Will Dean dance his way over to The Bachelor?
After it was revealed former MAFS star Dean Wells would be on DWTS, fans asked whether the controversial star could be chosen as the next single for The Bachelor. Producers might be waiting to see how he goes on the dancing show before signing him up. But if Dean does end up handing out roses, it appears one ex Bachelorette star won’t be too happy. “When did this country start celebrating intolerable, sexist, chauvinistic bigots?” Lee Elliott – who won the heart of Georgia Love – wrote alongside a photo of the DWTS 2020 cast, taking a swipe at Dean. The groom was dubbed the show’s bad boy in 2018 after cheating
on ‘wife’ Tracey Jewel with Davina Rankin. He later admitted he lied about saying he loved Tracey. “Tracey’s a great girl but it was pressure from the situation, the producers. The whole country was hating on me and I felt, ‘I’ve got to say I love you’ here,” he said. After Lee’s public swipe, both Dean and Tracey were quick to hit back. “I am as far from any of those things as a person can be,” Dean said. “The people that know you, know the truth of the great person you are,” Tracey said.

L IS THE BROMANCE OVER?
ERIN BARNETT
Erin, 24, says she spent $10,000 on surgery before Love Island. It’s believed she’s spent an estimated $35,000 on a new smile, breast implants, lip filler and other beauty treatments. “I’ve never been one to hide or lie about getting [treatments],” Erin said.
On last year’s season of Survivor contestants Luke and David seemed virtually inseparable. Now, the bromance could be over between the once close pair – and it’s all on account of their respective roles on the upcoming season of Survivor All Stars. The international model was named among the batch of returning contestants on the hotly anticipated season. But while David made the cut, fan-favourite Luke could potentially have felt slighted by his omission. It also means the proud dad won’t have another opportunity to compete for the half million dollars prize money to support of his young family, who were a driving motivation for him to compete on the show. However, Network 10 has already alluded to the fact Luke will still be involved with the upcoming season of the show. At the recent 2020 promotional event, the network announced that Luke will host a new spin-off series in a yet-to-be-announced digital and social media show.

he played the ultimate TV toughie who ruled the infamous steam press as Prisoner’s top dog Bea Smith – but in real life, actress Val Lehman is a kind-hearted softie who has been left reeling by the fate of our native wildlife following months of relentless fire storms. “To see those heartbreaking and haunting images of our koalas and kangaroos, the livestock, and everything else that’s been incinerated by the bushfires – from people’s homes and farms to businesses – has cut deeply,” confides Val, in an emotional interview from her Queensland home. Now, a devastated Val has decided to make a huge sacrifice to help save the animals – she’s auctioning off a Logie. While she notes Australia has always been a land of extremes, our latest bushfire calamity is unprecedented in terms of size, scope and ferocity. “All states were on fire,” the mum of three and grandmother of seven says. “In my 77 years I have never seen anything like this. And, like millions of Aussies, I sat watching the news and it was ever more terrifying. “To know that certain plant and animal species may be wiped out is unfathomable. Birds were falling from the skies. Livestock reduced to charcoal in their paddocks. When I hear stories of koalas screaming as the infernos 26

But I’ve never guested on Home and Away,” admits the Prisoner icon. “My Logies and my skills as an actress is really all I have to auction off.” Last September Val moved from Queensland’s Macleay Island to Toowoomba with her two beloved dogs, Bogart and Blaze. “I’d been living on the island for 11 years and began to feel isolated,” she says. “Since moving to Toowoomba, which is only a two-hour drive from Brisbane,

or years Colin Fassnidge and Manu Feildel have enjoyed a friendly rivalry on set, but now the two pals are set to take things to the next level as the judges battle it out on MKR: The Rivals. This season there’s a change to the hit cooking competition with five returning MKR teams mentored by Manu taking on five new teams mentored by Colin. With tensions sure to reach boiling point, Colin admits he will do anything for bragging rights over Manu. “Manu and I are best of friends, but when we get into the kitchen it’s like two fighters – the gloves come off,” Colin jokes to New Idea. “In the kitchen, we’re just out to do each other over, but then on the way home we get a lift together and we’re friends.” But with a team of MKR rookies, Colin is worried Manu, who has previous contestants, might have the upper hand. “I was a bit perturbed as Manu has got past winners, grand finalists and people who have done quite well on his team,” Colin says. “I have been given the teams who haven’t cooked before, so I’ve got a harder job.” But not one to take things too seriously, he adds with a cheeky laugh: “Obviously that means I’m the better chef. They gave the French guy that can’t really cook the other group.”
MANU & COLIN
THE GLOVE
THE MKR JUDGES GO HEADTO-HEAD THIS SEASON What’s more, this season will see the contestants live and cook in two Sydney houses, which meant a lot less travelling for the judges. Colin was particularly thrilled with the new set-up as it meant that he could spend more time with his family while filming. In fact, he even brought his daughters, Lily, 10, and Maeve, 8, to the set. “My girls would come to set and raid the cameraman’s lolly stash, empty the place and leave,” he laughs. But despite them having a famous dad, Colin admits that his girls still think he’s a “dork”. “I was cracking some of my best gags on set,” he says. “They were rolling their eyes saying, ‘You’re an embarrassment’.” Colin may have a reputation as a hot-head chef, but away from the stress of the kitchen, he’s very much the calm family man. He even credits his children for helping him get his life on track. “I think the only reason I have been successful is because I had kids,” he says. “I mean, I was a successful chef, I had every award there was to win, but I was very angry, because
that’s the pressure of the lifestyle you live. “Then I had kids and I’m like, ‘I am not going to have a heart attack over someone’s dinner, and I didn’t have kids not to see them.’ “So, I did less work and the business got better. Years ago, I never would have done TV, but I thought, ‘if you’ve got an opportunity, take it’. It’s what I tell the kids.” While Colin never thought he would end up on TV, he wouldn’t change it for the world. “TV pays better,” he jokes. “It’s the same with Pete [Evans] and Manu. We started as kitchenhands, washing pots and pans, then we were chefs, which isn’t a glamorous job, then next thing we are getting three people doing our hair and makeup and it’s like, ‘Look where we are at!’ “It’s a different world, but it’s interesting in TV-land to see everyone with all these jobs and how it all comes together. It’s a little bit like a kitchen.” By Zoe Burrell

hen The Osbournes – an MTV reality series based on the home life of infamous heavy metal singer Ozzy Osbourne and his family – went to air in 2002, few expected it to be such a hit.
The program followed the controversial family as they dealt with various challenges. It’s been nearly 15 years since the final episode of the oddball series aired. So, what are Ozzy, his wife, Sharon, and their children, Jack and Kelly, up to today? Here, we catch up with the Osbournes.
WE LOOK AT WHAT THE FAMILY IS DOING TODAY
JACK’S NEW GIRL
After announcing his separation from ex-wife Lisa Stelly in May 2018 after six years, Jack, 34, debuted his new girl, Aree Gearhart in 2019. “Aree and Jack’s relationship all happened super fast,” a Us Weekly insider revealed. “They are not living together yet but she is trying to mother
his children already.” Following their split, Jack and Lisa openly spoke about their relationship and plans to co-parent their children, Pearl, 7, Andy, 4, and Minnie, 1. “We absolutely still love each other. Our family is the most important thing in our lives, and we tried everything we could for many years to make this work,” the joint statement on Instagram said. “What’s best for our family right now is that we separate lovingly, and remain best friends who are committed to raising our children together. We had 7 beautiful years of being a couple ...”

OZZY’S PARKINSON’S DISEASE HELL
Ozzy Osbourne revealed in a bombshell interview that he has been battling Parkinson’s disease since February 2019. The 71-year-old rock star told Good Morning America he was diagnosed with the degenerative neurological disorder after having a bad fall. “It’s been terribly challenging for us all,” Ozzy said. “I did my last show New Year’s Eve at The Forum. Then I had a bad fall. I had to have surgery on my neck, which screwed all my nerves.” Ozzy’s wife Sharon, 67, also opened up about her husband’s ill health – telling hosts he plans 30
to see a professional in Switzerland in April this year. “It’s PRKN 2,” Sharon explained. “There’s so many different types of Parkinson’s. It’s not a death sentence by any stretch of the imagination, but it does affect certain nerves in your body.” The rocker had previously denied he was struggling with bad health – but came to the realisation he needed to be honest. “I’m no good with secrets,” he said. “I cannot walk around with it anymore ’cause it’s like I’m running out of excuses, you know? … I just hope [my fans] hang on.”

Kelly, in 2008, and (right) in 2019, has made a vow.
KELLY’S SOBER PROMISE Kelly has suffered from alcohol addiction, but after three years of sobriety, the singer recently opened up about her life and what she wants moving forward. “2019 has been one hell of a year. In many ways it has been amazing especially in terms of self-growth. In many ways it has been gut-wrenchingly difficult,” Kelly, 35, shared on Instagram. “However, through all the good and bad it has been incredibly educational for me. “I have come to the realisation that I constantly put the needs of others before my own. I allow myself to be put in situations that make me feel uncomfortable for fear of upsetting someone else. Not forgetting the amount of times I co-sign the bulls–t of others. “It’s time to put myself first, stop taking on other people’s s--t and be the badass sober woman I was born to be.”

OURNES? SHARON’S CHANGING FACE
Sharon has openly talked about her penchant for plastic surgery and in September 2019, she admitted to her fourth facelift during an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! “You know what it is? It’s just
that it’s so popular now for men and women to get facelifts, that there’s very few, really good surgeons and there’s so many people wanting to have it done that, odds are, you’re gonna get a dud,” Sharon said talking
about her recent procedure. “I think, too, a lot of people go in to change too much and then it just doesn’t work.” Sharon explained she enlisted the help of daughter Kelly for support. “Kelly was with me for most
of the time and when I woke up, she told me that I was going, ‘Help me, help me!’. And she’s like, ‘What can I do for you?’,” the mother of three recalled. “I’m like, ‘Just help me’ … I don’t know what I wanted help for!”

tiny bite from a white-tailed spider hiding in an ugg boot changed Naomi Lambert’s life forever. The 38-year-old from Adelaide, South Australia, was putting on a pair of the fluffy slippers in 2008 when the venomous creature nipped her on the foot, triggering a year-long ordeal spent trapped inside her own body.

The seemingly innocuous bite turned into a bacterial infection, which eventually developed into a sinister, paralysing disease. “It’s hard for me to remember that time in my life because it was an absolute nightmare,” Naomi tells New Idea. “I hadn’t been very well, and my immune system was quite depleted anyway. The bite on my foot just wasn’t getting any better. I knew something wasn’t right when I went to get out of bed, and I was just ... so weak. I tried to lift up a bandaid, and it felt like I was lifting 100 kilos.” The charity founder was also struggling to lift her head off

I heard one doctor say to my mum and dad: ‘She may never walk again’. “I was having panic attacks inside, but I just couldn’t communicate. “There’s nothing you can do apart from lie there all day.” After a few weeks of hell, doctors finally diagnosed Naomi with Guillain-Barré
NAOMI HAD NO IDEA A BITE COULD CHANGE HER LIFE FOREVER
It took an entire year of careful rehab before Naomi could get back on her feet. She had to learn to walk again and struggled to perform even the most basic tasks. “I was like a baby learning to walk again. It was so hard. I had muscle wastage as well,” she says. “My feet felt so heavy. I had to learn how to get in and out of the car ... to brush my hair again and brush my teeth or even hold a pen.” Living with the rare Guillain-Barré syndrome means Naomi’s immune system could crumble at the slightest ailment. ‘I DIDN’T THIN WAS STRONG

ooking back on her pregnancy, Kim Tucci can still remember how frightened she was at the thought of having quintuplets and how life would be after their arrival. “I didn’t think my body would be strong enough to carry five babies to term. I didn’t think I would be emotionally or financially or physically ready for the task,” she tells New Idea. “I tried to just concentrate on each day as it came. Because if I looked any further into the future I’d just have a panic attack.” But while the journey has been gruelling, Kim’s five babies – Keith, Ali, Penelope, 34
Tiffany and Beatrix – are about to reach an important milestone. “There are moments when I think, how the hell did I get to this point where they’re 4 years old?” Kim says. “I’m at a point now where I think I’m coming through the other side.” At the time of the quins’ birth, Kim was already a mum to three children, now 12-yearold Kurt, 8-year-old Ava and 6-year-old Indiana. As a result, she’s more than qualified to offer advice to other new parents. Her first book I’ve Had 8 Babies, And If There’s One Thing I’ve Learned… aims to help new parents keep their own sanity in early parenthood because, as Kim half-jokes,
“When I had the quins I had to find the most simple and easy way to raise them without losing my mind”. However, since the birth of Australia’s first ever naturally conceived quintuplets in January 2016, some of Kim’s early worries have played out. She’s experienced postnatal depression and many physical problems that were likely the aftermath of such a demanding pregnancy and led to her undergoing 12 operations, including a hysterectomy. Then, last year, Kim and husband Vaughn separated. “It was a mutual decision,” explains Kim.
“We were arguing all the time and we were both so miserable. We don’t have time for each other. Everything we have we give to the kids.” “But it’s also really emotionally hard, because we still love each other – that’s not the issue – it’s that we don’t work any more.” Vaughn still sees the children most days and at

had the attitude, ‘we’ll be able to do it, we’ll be fine’. But after the quins came along he started to suffer with depression; he found it quite hard to be a dad to so many children and try to balance everything.” Their other children also found the adjustment difficult when the quins were first born. “My eldest [Kurt] is deaf so he really struggles with background noise. He’d go to his dad and cry and say, it’s so noisy. Indiana just hated them – she was going through her terrible twos and any time I’d go near one of the quins she’d go into an epic tantrum mode. Ava is very maternal, she always has been; she has always loved her babies.” Kim says life is now smooth

They boss him around and say, ‘no Keith, we don’t want to play with you’.” Last year, the family faced the tough task of toilet training the quins. “That was the hardest. It was horrible,” she says, laughing. “It got to the point where I just couldn’t cope. Sometimes we’d go through 20 odd pairs of underwear a day. The washing was just horrendous!” Since becoming a mum to eight, Kim has learnt to prioritise her own wellbeing
and urges other parents to do the same. “We’re the front line, we need to look after ourselves before we look after others,” she says. “As much as I love my kids, at the end of the day if I don’t practise self-love I can’t be the best mother I need to be to raise them. That’s been a hard lesson to learn.” By Emma Babbington I’ve Had 8 Babies, And If There’s One Thing I’ve Learned… by Kim Tucci, Plum, RRP $19.99, is out Jan. 28.

HUNTIN INTERNET K THE TWISTED STORY BEHIND NETFLIX’S CRIME SERIES DON’T F**K WITH CATS

urking deep within the darkest corners of the internet is evidence of some of the most sickening and heinous crimes imaginable. While most people log online to watch videos of cute kittens or to update their Facebook status, a new breed of murderers, rapists and animal abusers are using it to boast of their criminal conquests. In the harrowing new Netflix documentary Don’t F**k With Cats, the gruesome crimes of an internet killer are exposed by online sleuths, showing the terrifyingly limitless potential of the World Wide Web. The bizarrely named docu-series focuses on convicted Canadian murderer Luka Magnotta, who killed, dismembered and cannibalised Chinese student Jun Lin, before posting footage of the slaughter online. Like most killers,
Magnotta graduated to murdering humans after first torturing and killing animals. His story begins in 2010 with a grainy video uploaded online. The footage shows a hooded figure suffocating a pair of kittens with a vacuum seal. The footage repulsed and horrified so many internet users that a group of Facebook sleuths embarked on an online manhunt in the pursuit of

Little did they know, the depraved kitten killer would also go on to post another horrific video – and this time his victim was human. In 2012, student Jun Lin, 33, disappeared from his home in Montreal, Canada, after planning to meet up with someone via a Craigslist (an online marketplace) ad. The day after
behind the kitten snuff film – was the same hooded figure in the horrific ice pick footage. Several armchair detectives are interviewed in the series, after they played a huge part in identifying the killer. “You can post porn, violence, somebody getting pushed down stairs, religious statues being defamed … and nobody gives a crap,” says Deanna Thompson, one of the cyber sleuths. “But in this seedy underbelly, there’s an unwritten rule. And rule
zero is ‘don’t f--k with cats’.” Using the video of Magnotta suffocating the cats, the team of online detectives zeroed in on ‘digital breadcrumbs’ to pinpoint the uploader’s personal details. But tragically, they couldn’t track him down fast enough to stop Jun Lin’s death. A few days after Jun Lin’s disappearance, the janitor of an apartment in Toronto found a headless torso in a suitcase. At the same time, Canada’s Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa received a package containing a human foot, and the Liberal Party received a hand. Police linked Magnotta to the crime after papers with his name on it were found in the trash and his apartment was splattered with blood. The body parts were later positively identified as those of missing student Jun Lin. It triggered one of North America’s biggest manhunts. By this time, Magnotta had already fled to Paris and was organising the sick body part packages from halfway across the globe. A red notice alerted police worldwide about the hunt for the sick killer, who was
Jun Lin (left) was stabbed to death in a Montreal apartment.
NG AN KILLER nicknamed the ‘Butcher of Montreal’ by the media. Using fake names and a false passport, Magnotta was able to evade capture as he flitted around Europe and headed towards Berlin. But on June 4, 2012, Magnotta’s luck with evading the authorities ran out. While sitting in an internet cafe in Berlin, scrolling through news articles about his own twisted crimes, police surrounded Magnotta. They had him cornered. “You got me,” Magnotta said, as he was placed in handcuffs. Magnotta’s extradition back home to Canada was a huge military mission, costing $417,000 to fly him to Montreal on a private jet. “How can we bring him back to Montreal on a commercial flight with other people sitting on board?” Montreal police commander Ian Lafrenière said at the time. When he landed, hundreds of members of international press were waiting to catch a glimpse of the runaway killer. In December 2014, two years after he was arrested, Luka Rocco Magnotta was found guilty of first-degree murder. He is currently serving a mandatory life sentence and will be eligible for parole after 25 years. After the release of Netflix’s three-part docu-series on Magnotta, reports emerged about the comfortable life the convicted killer was living behind bars. The Toronto Sun reported Magnotta signed up to a prison dating site in 2015 named Inmates Connect and met fellow convicted murderer

He killed a Halifax teenager who planned to testify against him in court and stabbed another inmate to death in 2003. The couple married in 2017, but were denied time alone in the prison’s private room. In all the fascination over Magnotta’s depravity, there is a forgotten victim: Jun Lin. The murdered student was killed simply so Magnotta could have the attention he craved so much. “It causes me great pain to know that my son’s legacy is to be remembered as a victim,” Jun’s grieving father said. “He not only suffered in his murder but will be humiliated for each time his name is mentioned and it hurts me deeply and will hurt me forever.” By April Glover

crime
I
t was the crime that shocked the nation, when 26-year-old nurse and former beauty queen Anita Cobby was horrifically murdered while walking home on February 2, 1986. More than 30 years later, people still remember Anita’s tragic story, but Deb Wallace has vowed to keep the young woman’s legacy alive. Despite announcing her retirement from the NSW
special
Gary Murphy is escorted by police officers.
Police last month, Deb plans to continue to work where it all started – helping victims of homicide. She was just a few years into her career at Blacktown police station, in Sydney’s west, when she found herself at the centre of the investigation into the murder of Anita Cobby. Anita didn’t usually walk home after work. In her regular routine, once she’d arrived at Blacktown station, s e would call her father from sh thee nearby phone booth and he would pick her up. But on that fateful night after dinner out with friends,
Deb Wallace re-enacts the scene for the case.
Anita discovered the phone booth had been vandalised and decided to walk home instead. That decision would see her life ending in the most horrific way. Anita was approached by an HT Holden Kingswood, which slowed beside her and stopped. Two of the five men inside the car jumped out and pulled her into the vehicle, where she was robbed, bashed and raped repeatedly before her throat was cut almost to the point of decapitation. Two days after she was kidnapped, Anita’s naked body was found in a paddock in Prospect. Her corpse showed horrific injuries. The gruesome murder was quickly solved. Led by Detective Sergeant Ian Kennedy, police took just three weeks to track down, arrest and charge the five men responsible. One of the policewomen at the centre of the investigation was Deb, who had just started her career in the force.
“When I saw the team on the Anita Cobby case and their passion, commitment and dogged determination, I wondered if I could be one of them,” Deb told the The Daily Telegraph. “I was met by the then Station Sergeant Joan Stedman, who was one of the original policewomen,” Deb added. “She pulled me aside and said, ‘Never compromise your integrity or your femininity. Be true to yourself and be proud to be a policewoman, you’re not a policeman’. “It was really good advice that I’ve tried to live up to for the past 37 years.” Deb was part of the team that brought the three Murphy brothers, Michael, 33, Gary, 28, and Leslie, 23, John Travers, 19, and Michael Murdoch, 19, to justice for the callous crime. Travers, the suspected ringleader of the group, had a sadistic history and was known to engage in bestiality with animals before slitting their throats. The trial lasted 54 days and on June 10, 1987, all five were found guilty of sexual assault and murder. Justice Alan Maxwell described the crime as “one of the most horrifying physical and sexual assaults. This was a calculated killing done in cold blood. The Executive should grant the same degree of mercy they bestowed on their victim.
MORE THAN 30 YEARS LATER, MANY PEOPLE VOW TO KEEP HER LEGACY ALIVE
ANITA COBBY: T MURDER OF A B
38
“The circumstances of these prisoners and the circumstances of the murder of Anita Lorraine Cobby prompt me to recommend that the official files of each prisoner should be clearly marked, ‘Never to be released’,” he added. Michael Murphy died last February of terminal cancer aged 66. The four remaining killers remain behind bars, forever remembered for their disgusting crime. More than 30 years after her death, Anita’s husband, John Cobby, still blames himself. “I should have been there with her,” John told The Daily Telegraph. “I rang her on the Sunday morning and I asked if she wanted to be picked up from work but she told me she had already organised going to dinner with some friends and to stay with her parents,” he added. “I blamed myself for her dying and still do.”
Anita Cobby is still remembered by those who loved her, and the officers who worked on the case.
Deb Wallace today.
Her parents, Grace and Garry Lynch, never got over their loss. Left: Anita and husband John.

will become thick. 2. Stand jug in a saucepan of barely simmering water. Stir until gelatine is dissolved in the water. Remove from heat. 3. The mixture should turn clear once you remove the jug and cool slightly (about 1 to 2 minutes).
The trick when adding dissolved gelatine to another mixture is to make sure both mixtures are about the same temperature. Don’t add hot gelatine mixture to cold milk or cream, etc, as it will suddenly set and form lumps. When adding it to a cold mixture, always allow the gelatine mixture to cool first.
STORAGE TIP!
Keep cut watermelon fresh by placing it in a colander over a large bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, then refrigerate it until ready to eat. This will stop the melon sitting in its own juice and going soft. Drink the juice or freeze in ice cube trays to add to drinks and cocktails!

How to lose weight WITHOUT DIETING
5 WAYS TO SHED KILOS: NO DIET REQUIRED
1
VARY YOUR ROUTINE
Making a few simple changes to your daily routine could give you the kickstart you need to lose weight. “Drive home a different way so you don’t go past those fast food outlets,” suggests mindset coach Sue Lester. “Instead of coming home and heading straight for the fridge, go into the bathroom and clean your teeth or go outside to breathe fresh air and stretch. Use smaller plates and eat at the table instead of in front of the TV. Sit down, eat slowly and pay attention to the taste, smell, texture of your food.” suelester.com
2
GET REGULAR EXERCISE
Sounds like a no-brainer, but perhaps for different reasons than you might think, says exercise physiologist Tim Douge, from Studio 99 in Brisbane. “Most people use exercise as a way to
balance out the calories they take in, but exercise has far more impactful benefits for healthy weight management,” he explains. “Exercise helps regulate hormones within the body. That means your stress levels will be lower, your sleep will be better and your appetite will be more balanced, all of which will contribute to a healthy weight. Not only that, but people who exercise have been shown to subconsciously make healthier choices when it comes to their diet.” studio99fitnesscentre.com
3COOK AT HOME
Cook at home rather than eating out as often as possible, says dietitian and co-author of Easy Healthy Tasty, Charity Spalding. “By doing this you have full control over the way meals are cooked and what goes into them,” she says. “Serve yourself half a plate
of vegies (two big handfuls), a quarter plate of rice/pasta/ potato/corn/bread (about the size of your fist) and quarter plate of meat/chicken/fish (about the size of the palm of your hand). If you’re not confident to cook for yourself, grab a basic cookbook to get you started.” easyhealthytasty.com
4
PUT A NUMBER ON YOUR HUNGER
Rate your hunger out of 10 before you eat, suggests Zoe Morosini, a clinical nutritionist, who specialises in non-diet behaviour change for
weight loss. “If you’re less than a five, wait another hour,” she advises. “Eating only when you feel hungry is a simple but powerful way to drop kilos without dieting.” zoemorosini.com
5
RESTRICT YOUR EATING WINDOW
“Time restricted eating (TRE) is a form of intermittent fasting, whereby you consume your calories in one window of time during the day, whether that be 12, 10 or eight hours,” says Dr Michael Mosley, creator of the Fast800 program. “Most fat burning happens six to eight hours after you finish your last meal, and increases almost exponentially after a full 12 hours. The period of fasting allows your body to enter a phase of ‘autophagy’, which literally means self-eat, and puts your body into repair mode. It’s not only good for weight loss, but can help boost brain activity, reduce your risk of heart disease and lower blood sugars.” thefast800.com 59

TO GETT PART-TIME WO THE 6-STEP GUIDE
It you want more flexible working hours, you need to be able to spell out to your employer how that may also benefit them.
L
ooking to rejoin the workforce, change jobs or juggle another job? There are various reasons why people already in the workforce seek to move from full- to part-time work. They may want to scale down and ease into retirement, or are seeking shorter working hours because they need to spend more time with their children or ageing parents. Whatever the reason, if you are seeking part-time or more flexible work, here are some tips from expert Michelle Gibbings.
THINK AHEAD It’s often easier to get flexible work in the organisation you are already working for. If you are keen to go part-time, give your boss plenty of notice so they have time to consider and plan. If they are hesitant about how it may work and its suitability, offer to go part-time on a trial basis so you can demonstrate to them that it can work. If you are doing this on a trial basis, be clear on the trial’s duration and

YOU ARE YOUR OWN RESOURCE security attached to the different options. For example, moving from short-term contract to another shortterm contract has higher levels of job insecurity. The upside, though, is you can decide how much time you want off between each piece of work.

how you are both going to assess whether it’s been effective (or not).
MAKE THE ASK The saying ‘Don’t Ask. Don’t Get’ often rings true. You need to be willing to ‘make the ask’ for flexible working and have your case spelt out as to why it benefits the organisation and how it can work. As you do this, highlight what you bring to the role. If you have the skills, experience and attitude the organisation is looking for, they will be more willing to try and find ways to make the flexibility work. FIND THE OPTIONS There are many forms of part-time work. It may be working fewer hours (traditional part-time), working the same hours but over fewer days (a compressed working week) or working to deliver a defined piece of work for a fixed rate (consulting/contract work). Know what type of work you are looking for as there are different conditions and levels of
SEEK HOT SPOTS There’s a growing number of jobs and professions where flexible working options are available. As well, some industries have more established practices, particularly retail, healthcare, consulting firms, government sector, education, hospitality and other servicebased industries. See where there is a fit between the industry you want to work in and industries where there is availability. BE REASONABLE The more flexible you are, the easier it will be to find part-time work. Where practical, strive to not be too rigid in what you are looking for. If you can accommodate your potential employer’s needs and make yourself highly valued in the workplace, it’s easier to negotiate what you want. For example, you may want to consider being open to taking on more hours during peak periods for your organisation. If that’s the case, make that clear to your prospective employer during the hiring process. STAY THE COURSE Recruiting staff is costly and if you can emphasise to your potential employer your commitment and dedication to the position it will add to your attractiveness as a candidate. Once you are hired, always seek to deliver value and more than what’s expected of you. When you are reliable, productive and a great contributor to the team, your employer will come to rely on you, and that helps with any future negotiations that are needed around working flexibly.
A few years ago I started reading finance books. To be honest, I had to. I’d gone through a separation and while I’d always been prudent with money, I suddenly felt that cold hard fear that I was now entirely responsible for myself. What was surprising about those books is they all had one thing in common: each pointed out that if you wanted more money there was another option other than buying a lottery ticket. In short, you could earn it. Whether taking on a second job or making use of the freelance gig economy, all the authors pointed out that seeking extra income was a worthwhile pursuit. In recent years my industry has been digitally disrupted but I took the advice and started branching out beyond my usual contractors. I sent ideas, brainstormed new outlets and the great thing is I’ve earned a bit more money while also increasing my skill set and my contacts book. It’s advice I recently gave my 19-year-old daughter as she was saving up to go overseas. She had a job working 35 hours a week but through Airtasker, she found other small jobs. At one stage she was earning $15 taking a weekly photograph of the avocado display at a local supermarket for a quality control company. Plenty of teens I know earn money by hiring out their formal dresses and clutches on websites such as Rent a Dress. Likewise, I know plenty of baby boomers who have put their granny flats or spare rooms on Airbnb. With statistics showing that seven per cent of working Australians are finding jobs through the gig economy this is a trend that’s only going to increase. As Queensland University of Technology’s Paula McDonald said: “It’s possible now for a really wide variety of work to be undertaken through platforms from caring to writing and translation, to web design, computer programming, to odd jobs and maintenance and skilled trades work.” For me, seeing myself as my greatest resource has not only improved my bank balance, it’s improved my confidence. 61

et yourself up for your most productive work year yet by re-organising your desk and office area. Home organisational whiz Carmen Strong from Little Strong Home (littlestronghome. bigcartel.com) shares her tips for getting the most out of your work space.
OFFICE DE-CLUTTER Start by emptying everything off the top of your desk. Then work through each bookcase and drawer until you de-clttuer your entire work space. As you go, sort things into categories: things to keep, things to throw out, and things to donate/sell. START FROM SCRATCH Once everything’s removed, you’ll be left with a blank canvas on your desk, drawers and shelves. Put your sorted and culled items back, designating each item its own specific spot.
GO PAPERLESS Where possible, ditch hard copies and scan documents to a hard drive. Otherwise, stay on top of filing with designated file containers sorted by useful categories, such as: bills, warranties, manuals, passports, health, home, car, kids, school, insurance, etc. ORGANISED ESSENTIALS Place a few key organisational items in close proximity. Calendars and diaries are essential for quickly jotting down important notes. Drawers, peg boards and desk organisers are handy for keeping items ordered.

WANT YOUR CHILD TO EAT MORE HEALTHILY? IT COULD BE TIME TO TURN ON THE TV
I
t might be time to switch over from MasterChef to Jamie Oliver, according to a new study from the Netherlands. The study found that children who watched child-orientated healthy cooking shows were more likely to choose healthier food options. Researchers asked 125 students aged between 10 and 12 years to watch two TV cooking shows for children – one focusing on healthy food, the other featuring unhealthy options – then offered them a

snack as a reward for participating. Those who watched the healthy version were 2.7 times more likely to make a healthy food choice than those who watched the show featuring unhealthy food. “The findings from this study indicate cooking programs can be a promising tool for promoting positive changes in children’s food related preferences, attitudes and behaviours,” says lead researcher Frans Folkvord from Tilburg University. The findings come after a
snapshot on the health of Australian kids found that 96 per cent did not eat the recommended five serves of vegetables a day. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report found that while almost three-quarters of kids ate enough fruit each day, just four per cent ate enough vegetables and almost half had at least one sugarsweetened drink a week. “Many people don’t know the size or number of serves they should be
consuming,” says Shaun Lindhe from AUSVEG. “One serve of vegetables is equivalent to half a cup of cooked vegetables, half a medium potato or one cup of salad vegetables.”

START BY BRUSHING
Before you undertake the big wash it’s important to brush your dog to get out any tangles, and cut out any knots. Then grab some towels and run a lukewarm bath.
BATH TIME
What sort of shampoo is best for dogs? Celebrity vet Dr Lisa Chimes (from Bondi Vett and Dr Lisa to the Rescue) e has just
released an all-natural dog g care range called DOG by Dr Lisa. Using only organic ingredients, the range has been carefully created to be gentle and effective on dogs. She says most people don’t realise that over-washing our dogs with harsh shampoos can result in a dull, dry, stinky coat and poor skin health. The range also includes wipes, moisturisers and brushes.
DRYING YOUR HOUND
To prevent any shaking before you walk your dog outside, drape a towel over them as soon as they get out of the bath. Then use another towel to thoroughly dry them – be sure not to forget the ears. An easy method for quick drying is to walk the dog in the sun immediately. If you use a hair-dryer be sure to set it on the cool setting so as not to harm the skin.

Five companies have commissioned new logos. Can you work out what symbol each used for their logo, and what colour and shape they were?
HOW TO SOLVE
Read the clues and place a tick in an intersecting box if you have any positive information and use a cross if you have any definite negative information. For example, you learn that one logo featured a flower inside a rectangle, so we have placed some ticks and crosses in the grid. Using this method, you should be able to fill in the smaller grid. Work out what symbol Ruckus used on its logo, which is the coloured area of the smaller grid.

BATTLESHIP CRUISERS
Find the four submarines, three destroyers, two cruisers and one battleship in the grid! The number next to each row and column tells you how many of the squares in that row or column contain a vessel or part of a vessel. They may be lying vertically or horizontally, but no two vessels are ever in adjacent squares in any direction.
DESTROYERS SUBMARINES
Answer the clues, entering each letter into the appropriately numbered section of the ring. When the puzzle is complete, the letters will spell a cartoon character (5,10) reading clockwise from number 1.

When my boyfriend and I first started seeing each other, he was keen to have children and that’s all I’ve wanted in life. But he shut me down recently when I said I wanted to try for one. Your boyfriend is not on the same page as you. Time is not going to help him re-evaluate his decision, nor is persuading him is the answer. As a couple you have come to a fork in the road. You are going in different directions. Unless this is sorted it could create a major rift in your relationship. If you don’t have a child, you will grow to resent him. He believes a child will disrupt your harmonious life, so I don’t see a happy ending. Perhaps it’s time to consider moving on and finding someone who won’t let you down.

My neighbours are so loud! I live in an apartment which isn’t very sound-proof. They always play music, throw parties and just cause mischief. I’ve taken it up with the landlords and spoken to the residents too – yet nothing has been done. What other alternatives do I have? Or should I just follow-up with them? I’m not getting enough sleep … SHAYNA, VIA EMAIL.

You need to go to the culprits next. Explain that your tiny apartment is not very sound-proof and you would be grateful if they turned down the noise. I doubt you will get much joy as you don’t have the landlords on your side. You could go to the police. It sounds like the neighbours are breaking the law. It’s up to the landlords to protect the residents and the property. Maybe it’s time to look around for a more suitable apartment. EVICTING EVIL
A
s housewarming gifts go, it was hardly ideal. A week after 24-yearold Sophie Tate moved into her new rental on the Mornington Peninsula in 2002, an unknown force wrote ‘DIE’ on her lower leg, in an intricate, old-world style calligraphy. Since this wasn’t Sophie’s first brush with the paranormal, she wasn’t as shocked as you’d imagine. Instead, she and her friend searched for every possible rational explanation, because that’s the kind of person she is. But there was none. Last week, on The Ghost Files podcast, I introduced Sophie, a medical administrator, who tells one of the most extraordinary haunted-house stories I’ve ever heard. Yet as chilling as these tales are, it’s easy to forget that these are no fabulous yarns designed for quick thrills. For Sophie, and others who’ve lived through inexplicable events, the story doesn’t end after the last page is turned, or the cinema lights come back on. As Sophie tells me this week in the conclusion of our two-part interview on The Ghost
Files podcast, she endured four months of relentless mental abuse at the hands of an unknown entity she soon realised was no run-ofthe-mill ‘human ghost’. The bizarre episode with the imprint on her leg was just the beginning. Days later, footsteps and a mocking laughter began, followed by appliance – and electrical – malfunctions. Eventually, it became a showdown between the malevolent force and brave Sophie, who was determined to stand her ground. She liked her house, she tells me. She loved her balcony with a view to the sea, and she was close to her beloved horse, who was on agistment nearby. There were many pluses. At last, Sophie sought help. You might be surprised about who she turned to. Tune in to The Ghost Files this week to hear about who evicted the evil gatecrasher and returned peace to Sophie’s life.

O
ver the past four decades, acclaimed Australian actress Belinda Giblin has brought to life some of our most memorable characters – from Sons and Daughters’ Alison Carr to The Sullivans’ Sister Sue Marriott and Home and Away’s Martha Stewart. And with Belinda now back in the Bay as Alf ’s (Ray Meagher) beloved Martha, she is busier than ever. Through it all, the seasoned star of stage and screen has had a happy constant in her life – her set designer husband, Axel Bartz, father to their two children, Romy and Nicholas. “I was touring 40 years ago with a stage play called Bedroom Farce,” says Belinda. “At the time, Axel was resident designer for the South Australian Theatre Company, and I met him when we went to Adelaide with the play. That’s where it all began.” And, adds Belinda with a laugh: “He was a pretty gorgeous bloke! We had a chemistry from the start – there’s no question about that.” Meanwhile, Axel recalls first meeting Belinda one evening in the bistro at the Adelaide Festival Centre. “I was having a discussion with a friend about marriage and how I didn’t think I would ever get married,” he recalls. “There was a tap on the shoulder. I turned and somebody said, ‘I’d like to introduce you to Belinda’. That was it. She kept touring [with Bedroom Farce] and the phone calls started to become very expensive!” Indeed, from the very beginning, Belinda and

Axel were aligned. “I think we met at a time when we both felt we wanted to settle down,” says Belinda. “We both wanted a family – we both wanted children. We had our daughter, Romy, and then, three years later, we got married under the bougainvillea in the garden of my parents’ house in Tamworth. Romy was a flower-girl. It was so lovely.” Recalls Axel: “Later, Belinda’s father and uncles sang ‘Danny Boy’ beautifully and our daughter was discovered having eaten half the wedding cake. Happy days! It was a delightful all-family get-together.” Today Belinda and Axel – now devoted grandparents – share their Sydney home with kelpie Billie and cat Arlo. “Arlo appears to live with us now. He just walked in the back door one day and stayed!” says Belinda with a laugh. And it’s clear that family ties have always been Belinda and Axel’s top priority. “The most joyful time in my life was having my babies and then my grandchildren,” she says, with a warm smile. “I’m very much a family person, so family is extremely important to me, and I’m a very hands-on grandmother.” That said, the talented duo certainly aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. “The wonderful thing for both of us is that we’re working more than ever,” says Belinda. “Axel goes from film to film to film and I’m doing Home and Away in the daytime and then plays at night. “I absolutely love it. Work is wonderful – and I want to work until the day I drop. I feel utterly blessed all the time.” By Jackie Brygel

HI-5 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? THE POPULAR CHILDREN’S ENTERTAINERS HAVE MOVED ON
NATHAN FOLEY
F
ormer Hi-5 star Nathan Foley’s baby son just couldn’t wait to make an entrance – arriving almost three weeks early as the singer raced home from overseas, desperately hoping he would make it in time. Sadly, despite a nail-biting journey, Nathan was still mid-air over the Tasman when his gorgeous wife Nicolette gave birth to tiny Joel Jackson Foley, just after 4pm on December 19, on the NSW Central Coast. “I missed the whole thing,” wails Nathan, a doting first-time dad at the age of 40. “I was trying to get myself back home, but Nicolette was only in labour for three hours. My flights kept getting delayed or cancelled, so it all just happened too fast. “I was four hours too late!” 80
Luckily, former model Nicolette, 37, is a laid-back Jamaican and very forgiving. With mother-in-law Julie Walker at Gosford Hospital to lend support – and cut the cord – she was ‘chilled’ about his absence. Yet the entertainer is still kicking himself at missing out. “I was really upset about it,” he confides. “I was due back from New Zealand, where I was recording a new album, on December 20, which should have worked out fine because he wasn’t due until January 7. But I guess Joel had other ideas! He was kicking up a storm in there and wanting to come out ASAP. “In the end, my mum pretty much took over while I was away, and my beautiful wife is an absolute natural. It’s just so unfortunate I had those flight delays.”
Since Joel’s slightly premature arrival – weighing 3.33kg and measuring 47cm – Nathan has been making up for lost time, learning how to change nappies and soothe a crying infant. Nathan was part of the original Hi-5 line-up from 1999 to 2008. “It was a beautiful, beautiful job,” Nathan told New Idea last year of his days with the popular group. In 2019, he won a legion of new fans on The Voice. And while he won multiple awards as a children’s entertainer, Nathan’s very much a rookie when it comes to caring for his baby. But it turns out he may well a baby whisperer. “If he’s a little bit sookie I start humming and he just stares and stops crying.” Nathan grins. “Hopefully,
one day he will join my band and that will be one less musician to pay!” Having forged an applauded international career as a cruise entertainer – which is how he met his bride on a Jamaican beach – Nathan’s happy to settle down now and stop wandering. In fact, he’s already trying to persuade Nicolette to have another child! “I’ve travelled the world several times and done everything I can to fulfil myself as a person, so I’m happy to be a more mature father,” he reflects. “And I want to be there. I don’t believe in bringing any child into this world unless you can play a big part in their lives. Support and love are the most important things you can give them.” By Jenny Brown

MEET MY BABY BOY
RETRO
Nathan was devastated to miss the birth of baby Joel but the popular entertainer is catching up on lost time with wife Nicolette and their precious son.
KATHLEEN DE LEÓN JONES Now 42, Kathleen left the group in 2007 to focus on her family. She met husband Daniel Jones − one half of Aussie supergroup Savage Garden − at the 2000 Logies, eventually marrying in October 2005. Queensland-based, they have two daughters, Mikayla, born in July 2006, and Keira, born October 2010.
TIM HARDING After breaking his back in a motorbike crash, Tim was forced to walk away from Hi-5. Today, the 41-year-old entertainer lives in Newcastle, NSW, with wife Tash and daughters Arielle and Beatrix, singing with Sydney-based functions band Soultraders.
CHARLI ROBINSON Gold Coast-based Charli is best-known as a presenter on Getaway. The bubbly 39-year-old welcomed her first child − daughter Kensington Claire Talbot − prematurely on December 28, 2018, with racing driver partner Liam Talbot. Fittingly, the couple got engaged on Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit last October.
KELLIE CRAWFORD During her Hi-5 days, which ended in 2008, Kellie was engaged to Nathan Foley but they called it quits in 2006. She went on to marry video and sound engineer Addam Crawford in May 2008, but her husband sadly died in October 2018, aged 40. Kellie, now 45, is dating musician Rhys Tolhurst. 81

HOME AND AWAY’S
UNMISSABLE RETURN!
W
e’ve been waiting months for this moment to come – and now it’s finally here! After one of the most memorable season finales in the history of Home and Away, our favourite weeknight series returns to our screens this week. And what unfolds is just as unmissable! A shock car accident will leave us reeling – not to mention what happens next in the ongoing siege situation
at the local hospital. Indeed, when we head back to the picturesque seaside town, all hell has broken loose. The armed thugs who stormed the hospital, fatally shooting Summer Bay favourite Mason (Orpheus Pledger), are still holding many of our most beloved townsfolk hostage. And we can also reveal that by week’s end, at least another hugely popular character will have lost their life! Here’s a sneak peek at this week’s must-see developments.
S E U N I T N O C R O R R E T E H T Just as we were preparing to farewell Summer Bay after another year of unforgettable moments, we were truly brought to the edge of our seats. What had begun as simply another busy day in Northern Districts Hospital’s emergency department for nurse Jasmine (Sam Frost), doctor Alex (Zoë Ventoura) and doctor-intraining Mason suddenly became a living nightmare. Without warning, gunmen took control of the hospital – and no-one was safe. What’s more, it quickly became apparent that the thugs were acting on behalf of the deadly Ouroboros gang – and that Jasmine, the young wife of
Robbo (Jake Ryan), was their main target. As the final credits rolled, Mason was killed. And the lives of Jasmine, Alex and many others, including Marilyn (Emily Symons), Mackenzie (Emily Weir) and, of course, a critically ill Bella (Courtney Miller) – who had earlier stolen and taken a bottle of medication in an attention-seeking bid – remained on the line. And by now, says Jasmine’s portrayer Sam, her character “has realised that she is in fact the one that these guys are really after”. Sam adds: “It is absolutely terrifying. She is now thinking ‘There is no way I’m getting out of this alive!’.” Meanwhile, outside the hospital and behind the police barricades,
the rest of the township has gathered and is frantically awaiting news. Desperately worried for his wife Marilyn, John (Shane Withington) sees newcomer Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams) and rushes to ask him if Marilyn is OK. John is hugely relieved to discover that Marilyn has not been harmed. But will that remain the case? Also outside, Willow (Sarah Roberts) whispers to a stunned Ziggy (Sophie Dillman) that Colby (Tim Franklin) and Ziggy’s on-again-off-again love Dean (Patrick O’Connor) have “gone rogue” and taken matters into their own hands. Having crept around the side of the building and forced open a door, the pair are inside the hospital and scaling
their way down the elevator shaft. But we see that Colby and Dean’s gutsy plan goes anything but well, and when Dean’s phone rings, the gunmen are alerted to his presence in the building! “Dean is the only person who has broken into the hospital without a gun,” says Patrick. “Now he gets a phone call from Ziggy, who has found out what’s going on and that he’s gone into this incredibly dangerous situation. “Dean is playing the riskiest game, and anything could happen at this point. It could not be more intense.” In the meantime, Alex – aware that Bella will die without immediate medical attention – is desperate to do whatever she can to obtain supplies to save the ailing teen. But is it already

Robbo is desperate to get to the hospital to help save Jasmine.
ROBBO’S NIGHTMARE With the love of his life, Jasmine, taken hostage at Northern Districts Hospital, Robbo (Jake Ryan) is also anything but safe. Driving down a back road with Scott (Trent Baines) – an AFP officer who has finally revealed himself to be secretly working for the Ouroboros gang − Robbo now tries to appeal to the man he once trusted with his life. “Robbo is desperate to get back and save Jasmine,” says Jake. “Robbo and Jasmine had just got to the point
where they were ready to think about bringing a child into the world together. “He is now trying everything in his power to reverse the situation he has found himself in with Scott.” But just when it seems Robbo may be able to convince the traitor agent to spare his life and help him rescue Jasmine, Robbo mentions Scott’s loved ones. And it seems the Summer Bay favourite may have made a fatal error in doing so! “Scott does an about-face again,”
reveals Jake. Indeed, after demanding Robbo keep driving, Scott eventually insists he stop the car in remote bushland. What will happen next?
G N I N I L R E V L I THE S There will not be a dry eye in the house after this week’s devastating episodes hit our screens. But in the wake of the terror and tragedy, there may also – thankfully – be a reason to smile. Alf (Ray Meagher) finds himself reaching a life-changing realisation following the siege. Life is too short to be holding back, he reasons. After organising a candlelit vigil on the beach for those who lost their lives, Alf drops a bombshell on Martha (Belinda Giblin). How would Martha feel, Alf asks, about marrying him again?? “Alf has recently seen more and more of the woman he fell in d love with all those years ago, and now he decides to propose. But expressing his feelings in that area is difficult for him,” says Ray. He’s definitely not a salesman of his own feelings!” Let’s just say, however, Martha’s response may take Alf by surprise! Will she accept?

RYDER’S BATTLE
Impressionable teen Ryder (Lukas Radovich) fell for the charms of Jade (Mia Morrissey) – only to realise the backpacker was not as she seemed. A vindictive Jade then turned the tables on him, claiming he had posted a sex tape on social media. Now, facing cyber exploitation charges, Ryder is at a complete loss. “His
world has come crashing down and he doesn’t know what to do,” says Lukas. “He’s never gone through anything like this before and feels that no-one can possibly understand what he’s feeling.” Indeed, while Roo (Georgie Parker) urges Ryder to tell Alf about the charges before someone else does, Ryder can’t
bring himself to do so. Instead, he heads to the beach where he runs into Jade – and ends up in a heated argument with her and newcomer Nikau (Kawakawa Fox-Reo), who appears to have taken a liking to Jade. Before long, Ryder is brawling with Nikau – and things don’t go well for the embattled teenager! 85

TV HIGHLIGHTS NEXT IN FASHION WED. ON NETFLIX Alexa Chung and Queer Eye’s Tan France host this new reality series for aspiring designers which comes with a $250,000 prize – a huge sum that could set up the winner’s business. Similar in many ways to Project Runway, Next in Fashion also features challenges that need to be completed incredibly quickly, a runway reveal and critiquing from a panel of experts. You get the impression, though, that the contestants seem to be further along in their careers than on Project Runway, with some having worked for music stars such as Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj. It maybe doesn’t reinvent the genre enough to be truly must-see TV, but Next in Fashion is certainly easy to watch, with all episodes available at once for the ultimate binge.

The actress, who looked chic in a blazer paired with bright pink pants, was pictured grasping Hugh’s hands at one point and laughing at his jokes while promoting the miniseries.
