Since then, she’s sought ways “to heal the body naturally” without commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals. “I’ve changed my life in that I am in control of my health and aging,” she explains.

BETTER CHOICES

Eating well is the first step. “Food is our fuel,” says Suzanne, whose previous books have recommended a low-sugar, low-carbohydrate diet with an emphasis on fresh, toxin-free ingredients and healthy fats. “Imagine putting inferior fuel or sugar into a Maserati?” she asks. “It would not run at peak efficiency. Same with our bodies. We have to put actual good food into our bodies to maintain peak working condition.” Suzanne complements her nutritious diet with a daily yoga practice — an exercise regimen that strengthens the mind as

That’s one of the main things I like about it.” While getting older is inevitable, Suzanne insists that with the right information, it can be pleasurable instead of painful. “People are concerned about the deterioration of life quality; unable to sleep, itching skin, bloating, moodiness and then disease. These all are natural effects of aging that can be rectified,” she promises. When she’s not writing or lecturing on health topics, Suzanne enjoys being at home in Palm Springs, Calif., with her husband of 42 years, Alan Hamel. “I’m not done with acting,” she confides. “But I am very content. Like it was going through me. It was very, very emotional.” Poor Marion Crane met a tragic end at the Bates Motel — but the actress who played her was never anyone’s victim. Despite growing up poor, Janet was already on the way to making a better life for herself when Hollywood came calling. She would go on to star in more than 60 films, including other classics like The Manchurian Candidate. “Her face was undeniably beautiful,” says daughter Jamie Lee Curtis, 61. “She was intoxicating.” In addition to beauty, Janet possessed intelligence and drive, which helped make her one of the hottest stars of the 1950s — but her 18 January 27, 2020 CLOSER

many blessings couldn’t protect her from pain. In 1962, her highprofile marriage to actor Tony Curtis ended in a betrayal. Rather than vilify him, Janet held her head high and found a way to forgive. “[She taught me] to be grateful for the life and gifts that God has given me,” daughter Kelly Curtis, 63, tells Closer. “That compassion, self-reliance, courage and humility are the greatest human qualities to learn and live.”

BIG DREAMS

The only child of a California working-class couple, Janet, who was born Jeanette Morrison, excelled in her studies and graduated from high school at 16. She was doing odd jobs and taking college courses when actress Norma Shearer spotted her photo at a ski lodge where her parents worked. “She brought it back to Hollywood with her,” said Janet.

“They sent for me, I went to MGM and signed a contract that day.” She became a star in 1947’s The Romance of Rosy Ridge, but success came at a price. “Mom and Dad grew more and more apart, and more was lived through me, especially by my mother,” Janet said. “It was heavy on me.” Her life changed again in 1950, when she met aspiring actor Tony Curtis at a party. It was love at first sight. “Her face was exquisite,” he recalled. “It just devastated me to

look at this woman.” Like Janet, Tony, too, had overcome a working-class background to become one of Hollywood’s most promising actors of the period. The pair eloped in June 1951 and made their big-screen debut together two years later in Houdini — although it almost didn’t happen after the studio tried to give Janet, who was a bigger star at the time, top billing. “I said tell the studio I will always take second billing to of the old school. When I got married…it was my husband first and then me.” They made four other films together during their decade-long marriage and had two daughters: Kelly in 1956, followed by Jamie Lee in 1958. But despite the beautiful photographs that appeared of them in movie magazines, Janet and Tony’s relationship began to fray. “My parents’ bond had deteriorated precipitously as their stardom grew,” ex-

Tony upheld his financial responsibilities to his daughters but wasn’t a part of their lives growing up. “He was not a father and he was not interested in being a father,” Jamie Lee has said. “It’s not a slant against him, he was very clear.” Janet remarried in late 1962 to stockbroker Robert Brandt — a union that would last for 42 years. “They had a very similar sense of humor,” says Kelly, who adds that her mom and stepdad also shared a love of fishing, skiing and playing tennis together. “They were both fiscally conservative, too.” Her happy marriage allowed Janet to remember Tony, despite his betrayal, with kindness. “We had wonderful years,” she said.

While raising her daughters, Janet attended school functions, signed report cards and even drove a station wagon in the car pool — all while continuing to make movies. “I think there is a misconception that people who are actors don’t go to their children’s graduations. It’s silly,” says Jamie Lee. “She took good care of me, my needs were always met and she showed up to everything.”

Her daughters remember Janet as a strict parent who insisted they keep their rooms neat and finish their homework before TV time. “She was no-nonsense, but we shared many private jokes,” says Kelly. “She did the best she could with us. Managing to balance her work and her home life was a great accomplishment. She also had a compassionate nature.” Jamie Lee recalls how her mother participated in an annual variety show to benefit SHARE, a children’s charity. “My mother was an early member and would dedicate months of time to put on a real show,” she tells Closer. “I watched her do that my whole life.” When she passed away at 77 in 2004, Janet left behind a legacy of great work, both on the screen and in her private life. “Her humble beginnings made her grateful. It fueled an already strong work ethic to use her gifts to their full advantage,” says Kelly. “I am grateful that she was my mother.” — With reporting by Katie Bruno and Ed Gross

AS HE ENJOYS RETIREMENT FROM HIS FILM CAREER, THE OSCARWINNING ACTOR FOCUSES ON HIS KIDS AND GRANDKIDS n his Hollywood heyday, Jack Nicholson partied like a madman, but these days, he prefers quieter get-togethers. He recently hosted a holiday dinner at his LA home with an exclusive guest list. “It’s pretty small — me, my uncle Ray, my aunt Lorraine, my mom,” reveals grandson Duke Nicholson, 20, whose mother is Jack’s daughter Jennifer, 56. Even though Jack doesn’t get out as often as he used to, “he’s doing great,” says Duke. “He’s 100 percent.” Jack, 82, hasn’t acted in a decade (his last role was in 2010’s How Do You Know), and he’s making the most of his unofficial retirement. “I don’t think many people have a very good understanding of leisure and the importance it plays in our lives,” says Jack, who enjoys watching sports (he’s a die-hard Lakers fan) and keeps up with current events. “He’s long had a thirst for knowledge,” says an insider. “He still reads voraciously and is tuned in to what came before him and what’s going on today.” A special source of pride is Jack’s art collection, which he often shows off to his family. “He loves to tell stories about the paintings he’s collected,” a friend shares with

Closer. “More than anything, his kids and grandkids love to hear his stories and the kernels of wisdom he doles out to them.”

AS GOOD AS IT GETS

In a sense, Jack is making up for lost time by devoting so much attention to his family in his later years. “He’s tried to make a close bond, especially with Jennifer,” says the friend. “Jack carries some guilt that he wasn’t there for her as much as he believes he should have been in her younger years. He just dotes on her two sons,” Duke (who made his big-screen acting debut in last year’s horror hit Us) and his older brother, Sean. Jack also has some regrets about his romantic past. “I’ve had everything a man could ask for, but I don’t know if anyone could say I’m successful with affairs of the heart,” says the star, who was married only once, to actress Sa nd r a K n ig ht (Jennifer’s mom) from 1962 to 1968. What I can’t deny is my yearning.” Still, Jack has found solace with his loved ones. “As he’s gotten older, his family means more to him than it ever has,” says the friend. “He truly believes they are his legacy and tries to be there for them.” Notes Jack, “I’m content that I made a decent effort. That’s what I’ve always worried about: that I wouldn’t try hard enough.” And he’s satisfied with the end results. “Jack is living the life he wants to,” says the friend. “He seems happy.” In other words, he can handle the truth. — Bruce Fretts

He took daughter Lorraine to the Golden Globes in 2007.

BOB HARPER

I Feel Stronger a heart attack, planning his wedding and finding his purpose in life 44 January 27, 2020 CLOSER

With trainers Dolvett Quince and Jennifer Widerstrom, Bob capped his 2004–’ 16 run on NBC’s The Biggest Loser by taking over as host in Season 17.

B

obHarperisatruesurvivor. In2017,justaboutayearafter beingpromotedfromtrainer to host of NBC’s weight loss competition show The Biggest Loser, he suffered a near-fatal heart attack. “It’s been a roller coaster, I’ll tell you that!” Bob, 54, shares with Closer. Not only has he recovered from his ordeal, he’s turned the experience into a positive one by speaking to fellow heart attack victims on the national Survivors Have Heart tour, set to resume later this year. On Jan. 28, he’ll begin hosting a rebooted version of The Biggest Loser on USA Network, and he’s planning a “fun event” wedding with his fiancé, Anton Gutierrez, 34, director of production for the app NEOU Fitness. “My life has changed completely, and the main thing that has changed for me is becoming an advocate for heart attack survivors,” he shares. “I feel stronger — mentally and physically — every day.”

First off, how are you feeling? I feel great today! I’m in my hometown, Nashville, to meet with other survivors. It’s really important to me, because [AstraZeneca and I have] created this wonderful place where survivors and caregivers can get together and talk about their experiences. Feb. 12 will mark three years since your heart attack. How have these years been? It’s been eye-opening. I look at the footage of the first Survivors Have Heart and it’s

Bob with fiancé Anton Gutierrez in November

very emotional for me, because I was still so fresh after having a heart attack. I was there to be the mediator, but found I was really just on this journey, so emotionally and passionately, with everyone else. As more time passed, while it’s important to watch your physical health, it became so much more about the emotional struggle.

How have you changed since your attack? After you’ve survived it, you just want life to go back to the way it used to be. When you realize that maybe it won’t, you know you’re going to find a new normal. I have a strong relationship with my health care providers. I see them twice a year, get my checkups. I’m definitely on top of all that. Has your fitness routine changed? Very drastically. It’s as extreme as it used to be, but in a completely different way. The main workouts I do are hot yoga classes, and they’re intense, but they’re not the super-high-intensity type I was used to, just pushing myself to these crazy limits. I’ve found more of a balance, and I feel really good about that. Has anything else changed? Whenever I’m in a new place, I always look around for the AED [automated external defibrillator]. I’m always assessing people, thinking, “If I have another heart attack, who knows how to perform CPR? Who’d be diligent?” That’s how my brain is now. CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 45

HEART to heart You’ve shot the reboot of The Biggest Loser, debuting Jan. 28. What’s new? As the host, I’ve created a support group for the contestants to talk about whatever we’re going through. We have two new trainers, a new medical team and we’re in a new location: Santa Fe, N.M. There’s a reason why they call that place the Land of Enchantment — that place is magical and so peaceful! I live in LA and New York, and I love New York, but when I got back, I thought, “Why is everyone so loud here?” Do any of the show’s changes reflect what you’ve gone through, like aftercare? We’re giving guests a gym membership and nutritionist for a year, because losing weight is the easiest part; keeping it off is the hardest. If you don’t take what I’m offering and put it into your daily life, you’re going to struggle. And there’s no finish line: You’re going to be dealing with this forever. When you’re able to swallow that pill, you’re going to have more success. Any moment that set you on your path? I grew up in rural Tennessee on a farm and wanted to experience something else. As soon as I graduated from high school, I was on a bus to the closest city, Nashville, and started experiencing life with different types of people. And my parents taught me a strong work ethic. Summer vacations meant getting up at 5 a.m. and working on the farm every day. I thank them for that.

When did you become serious about your body and health? I’ve always taken it seriously — though not as much as when I turned 40. I thought, I want to grow old like a fine wine, to defy my age. I just turned 54 and I feel good, feel strong, still look good. [Laughs]

HIS JOY

“My dogs bring me the most joy!” Bob tells Closer. “Karl (as in Karl Lagerfeld) is about 11, and Vivienne (as in Vivienne Westwood) is 3. And ever since I was little and got a Kodak camera, I’ve loved photography. I have an Instagram page (@bobharpergallery) and try to create human moments.”

What’s your support system? Well, my doctors, but also my friend and assistant, Nicole, and my fiancé [Anton] have been there every step of the way. In the beginning, they never left me because I was afraid to be by myself and have another heart attack. They went through a lot emotionally, too. What makes Anton the one? We met in Laguna Beach, Calif., and just hit it off. He’s one of the kindest, sweetest people in the world. He can deal with me when I’ve got so many things going on and stress. He knows how to calm the storm.

Are you planning your wedding now? I am definitely planning an event. [Laughs] It’s going to be very different. I have zero desire to be walking down an aisle or anything like that. I want it to be fun! Why’d you come out on the show in 2013? People thought that I was hiding something, but that was never the case. I came out in high school in Tennessee —that

Bob has filmed many DVDs (like 2010’s Yoga for the Warrior) and authored books on fitness, food and healthier living.

“As I look back at this photo of me as a little boy with good posture, I realize I haven’t changed much!” the Tennessee native shared.

During his 11 years as a trainer on The Biggest Loser, Bob (seen with contestant Mark Kruger in 2008) helped people lose weight to win big prizes.

Bob was an adviser on The New Celebrity Apprentice in early 2017. “It was exciting to do, and fun to work with [host] Arnold Schwarzenegger.”

“Like that line, ‘I’ve always relied on the kindness of strangers,’ meeting people helped me.” — Bob

was a big deal. I never chose to talk about it on the air, because my job was all about the contestants, until I worked with one, Bobby [Saleem], who was struggling. I thought, “He can learn something from me.” I was really glad I did, because I’ve never been ashamed or wanted to hide it.

Anything on your bucket list? I’d really like to have my own talk show. I like sitting down and talking to people. What are your biggest life lessons? One of the biggest is to not stress the big or small things — being able to say, “Who cares?” It’s important to realize that life is so short. Surround yourself with people you want to, enjoy your life and do things like eating right and exercising to stack the deck in your favor. There’s a stereotype that heart attacks are for people who are overweight, with high stress, smokers. I’m living proof that we’re all at risk. — Reporting by Diana Cooper

On Feb. 12, 2017, Bob had a heart attack after an NYC gym workout. “Not to be dramatic, but I was on that ground dead,” he said, but his dogs Karl (below) and Vivienne helped him recover.

On Jan. 28 at 9 p.m. ET, a rebooted version of The Biggest Loser debuts on USA with Bob as host and a new set of trainers, Erica Lugo and Steve Cook.

In November 2017, Bob teamed with AstraZeneca to coach heart attack survivors with the Survivors Have Heart program, and he’ll be on the road again later this year. For info, visit survivorshaveheart.com. CLOSERWEEKLY.COM 47

They just think, ‘Oh, she’s fun!’” That hasn’t stopped her from seeking a genuine connection. “If I wanted a man in my life, it would be for partnership,” she explains. “It wouldn’t be an arrangement. It would be an actual relationship. And those are pretty hard to come by.”

NO STONE UNTURNED

Sharon’s been married twice before, and she’s not willing to compromise in her choice of a significant other. “Women so often lose their own identity to the identity of the men that they’re with,” she says. “They even change the way they dress and what they do to fit the men they’re with.” 48 January 27, 2020 CLOSER

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT ME

THE FIVE-TIME GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER OPENS ABOUT HER LIFE ON- AND OFFSCREEN I WAS MISS GOLDEN GLOBE IN 1982 “Times have

changed. I remember how simple it seemed, with my grandma driving me up to the Hilton in her gray Toyota Corolla. I changed in the bathroom,” says Laura, 52. “There was something very beautiful about knowing this [Hollywood] community at such a young age and having my grandma with me.” I FOLLOWED MY PARENTS’ ADVICE — GRUDGINGLY

Veteran actors Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd cautioned their daughter to vary the roles she accepted to avoid being typecast. “I gave up financial opportunities, I was pissed off a lot, I was bummed because I wasn’t working,” recalls Laura. “But in the long run, I worked with the directors that moved me and I never played the same part twice in a row.” I’M PROUD TO BE A PART OF GAY TV HISTORY

On a groundbreaking 1997 episode of Ellen, Ellen DeGeneres’ TV character comes out as a lesbian after realizing her crush on Susan, played by Laura. “That was an incredible moment to be part of, one of the great moments of my life,” says Laura. DIVORCE DIDN’T RUIN ME “My amazing children…

came from love despite an ending in a marriage,” says Laura, who won a 2020 Golden Globe for her role in Marriage Story. The mom of son Ellery, 18, and daughter Jaya, 15, split from musician Ben Harper in 2013. “We are so privileged to redefine what family looks like,” she says.

At 15, she handed out awards as Miss Golden Globe.

hampagne, a five-course feast and a red velvet cake were the centerpieces of the early celebration of Kate Middleton’s 38th birthday. The Duchess of Cambridge and her husband, Prince William, recently hosted their closest friends and family at a weekend party at their country estate, Anmer Hall. er, who revealed that all the merrymakers were longtime pals of the pair. “They spent hours reminiscing and laughing about the old times,” the insider says. William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth II also dropped by to wish the birthday girl well. That evening, after Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 20 months, went to bed, the grown-ups dressed in black tie to enjoy a celebratory meal. “Everyone sang ‘Happy Birthday’ and gave Kate gifts,” reveals the insider. “Champagne and wine flowed throughout the evening — they even played a couple of drinking games. There were quite a few hangovers the following day at church!”

TOKENS OF LOVE

Back in London on Kate’s actual Jan. 9 birthday, the children kept up their tradition of presenting their mother with an album of their favorite family photos from the previous year. “George, Charlotte and Louis are also planning to build a new ‘kids’ vegetable garden for their mom as a gift with the help of William. The children have already chosen their own seeds and plants,” says the insider. That night, the duchess received the biggest surprise from her husband of eight years, who insisted on cooking her a romantic dinner for two. “William bought Kate a pair of diamond earrings and a matching necklace,” says the insider. “He also secretly booked a family ski trip to the mountains and put a photograph of the chalet where they will be staying in her birthday card.” Kate was thrilled by the gift. “She loves skiing,” says the insider. “She wants to share the sport with her kids from an early age.” — Louise A. His Life in

PICTURES

“ONEOF my great regrets is that my father never got to see me be successful,” admitted Paul Leonard Newman. “He died when he was 57 years old, and he saw me as a ne’er-do-well.” Of course, the kid from Shaker Heights, Ohio, did do quite well creating such memorable characters as “Fast” Eddie Felson, Hud and Butch Cassidy in over 60 films before his death in 2008. But for Paul, who would’ve turned 95 on Jan. 26, it may have been creating memories for those in need via Newman’s Own products and his Hole in the Wall Gang Camps that would have made his dad most proud. As the actor said, “I hope that the camps last longer than the legacy of my films.”

“I was always a character actor. I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood.Ó — Paul

58 January 27, 2020. CLOSER

1967 KEEPING COOL “They’re having fun, and if they’re having fun, then the actor can have fun,” admitted Paul of his penchant for playing rogues in pics like Cool Hand Luke. “Any character that’s just filled with larceny is always interesting, because you can never tell when he’s telling the truth.”

1961 ON CUE “Good scripts are damn scarce. I recall I wanted to do The Hustler with Bob Rossen from the word go,” said Paul, who’d be more taken by the terminally ill director. “He just pulled himself together. He was incredible.”

1990 MR. AND MRS. “Joanne and I have had difficult, bodybending confrontations, but we haven’t surrendered,” Paul once shared about his 50-year marriage to Joanne Woodward, with whom he’d also made 11 films including Mr. and Mrs. Bridge. “We have had long, really difficult times, but we have enough lust and respect. We’re lustily respectful, respectfully lustful.”

1994

1953 CENTER STAGE Paul’s Broadway debut couldn’t have come at a better time. “On the day I signed for Picnic, I had less than $250 in the bank and [my first wife] Jackie was about to give birth to a second child. If it hadn’t been a good play, if it folded after only a week or two, I don’t know where I would have gone.”

1956

1973 GET AHEAD “I try not to have too much of a fat head about myself,” said Paul, who felt a kinship with Robert Redford on The Sting. “The advantage that Redford and I have had is that it’s a very, very slow process making it up the ladder.” 1995 DRIVER’S SEAT Enamored with motorsports since 1969’s Winning, Paul became the oldest driver to win a professionally sanctioned race at the 24 Hours of Daytona. “When I was a kid, I was not a good scholar, and I really wanted to be one. I was not a good athlete, and I really wanted to be one. I was not a good conversationalist, and to this day I have difficulty talking. The only place I ever felt I had grace was in an automobile.”

1958 HOT STUFF He’d resent the sexsymbol status that came with pics such as Cat on a Hot Tin Roof since “writers create these sexy, flamboyant, aggressive characters…. You don’t always have Tennessee Williams around to write glorious lines for you!”

1977 PUCK IT Paul was the first to admit his roles and real life could be a bit confusing. “There’s a hangover from characters sometimes. There are things that stick. Since Slap Shot, my language is right out of the locker room. And ever since I played Rocky, I spit on the street.” 2003

1987 TRUE COLOR “I’m just now beginning to learn a little something about acting,” he said before winning his only Oscar for The Color of Money. “I don’t say that as a joke…. I don’t think I ever had an immediate, spontaneous gift to do anything right.”

Oversize Coats

1966

This winter, generously cut overcoats, like the one seen here on model Hailey Baldwin, became quite trendy — but this look has got nothing on Harpo Marx! The silent member of the famous Marx Brothers loved to do visual gags like suddenly producing a steaming hot cup of coffee out from the depths of his big coat!
