EDIT NOTE Can you remember your favourite festival memory? Was it the time when you helped clean the house unwillingly, or was it the time when you polished off tons of mithai and never gained a single pound? If it is the latter, then we sure are sailing in the same boat. It is quite easy to indulge in a few extra slices of the leftover chocolate cake at night, but if you go to the gym or a 5K run the next morning, then you, my friend, have already won half the battle. Now for the other half, we have got you covered with the best tips and tricks from experts around the world, on how to control your diet, even without compromising on taste. Yes, it is possible. We have also curated some sensational cocktails and food spreads that you can prepare for your house party. Trust us, you will not waste your morning planning and prepping for it, and actually get to enjoy your holidays. Our FHM Fit cover star for the month of October, Neil Nitin Mukesh loves to play the bad guy, and quite rightfully so. His versatility is well-known in the entertainment industry, and now his new role as a father keeps him occupied, but he isn’t complaining. His belief is that having six-pack abs is a great accomplishment, but doing so with the help of steroids is something that he absolutely despises. To second this thought, we collaborated with celebrity coach, Mike Ryan, who’s trained celebrities like Hugh Jackman, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and our very own Aamir Khan. His idea about fitness is that, he wants everyone to leave their ego at the door and pursue fitness with an open mind. To keep your face looking always fresh during the festival season, we’ve come up with an all-inclusive regimen that will take care of all your acne woes, for a long time to come. Finally, we explore the ultimate gym equipment, Swiss ball, which you would have never believed can give you rock hard abs; and if you want to take the supplement road, then we have a complete feature on how to take the supplement, L-arginine that can make a real difference to your muscular development, and much more. We also talk to IFBB Pro, Bhuvan Chauhan, who tells us everything one needs to know, to get the most out of a gym and a good diet – and start a satisfying fitness journey. There’s no shortage of great experiences to be had with the pages of this issue. Enjoy. — Mrinalini Singh

M

en are believed to have uncomplicated skin regimens, however, acne is an enemy that doesn’t spare anyone. Defying the confines of age and gender, acne breakouts can occur to anybody at any time, especially the night before a date with that special someone. Be it the clogging of skin pores, or an unhealthy diet, there are countless reasons for getting those ugly looking pimples. To get to the root cause, it is necessary to identify your skin type. Furthermore, there are distinct ways in which acne manifests on your skin. It may be in the form of a pimple or a blackhead, you need to delve deeper to get to the crux. Though acne appears similarly in different individuals, its treatment varies profusely. The reason being that every skin type is unique, and every man has a different medical history. With the seasonal drift, our skin starts showing the first signs of change. As the festive season is in full swing, it is crucial to achieve that ideal flawless look. The good news is that we have got you covered. Use the knowledge provided here to pave your path to an acne-free spotless glow. DRY SKIN Acne is often associated with oily skin. Acne proliferates when the skin produces a large amount of sebum (oil), which clogs the skin pores leading to acne breakout. But the scenario is entirely different for people with dry skin. Dryness leads to an accumulation of dead and flaky skin debris, which traps oil in pores and triggers acne growth. While the market is brimming with products which

“Regular cleansing rinses out dead cells and gives you healthy and rejuvenated skin.” focus on oily skin, most never address harsh skin. Our advise is to engage in a regular exfoliating regimen. Opt for a medicated or natural cleanser, and get yourself a quality moisturiser which is oil-free. OILY SKIN While the obvious reason for an acne breakout in people with oily skin is the oil trapped in the pores. However, there are plenty of other factors that contribute to a face with acne blemishes. Did you know that in hopes of preventing that incessant discharge of oil from your face, you can overdo exfoliation? Regular cleansing rinses out the dead cells, and gives you a healthy and rejuvenated skin. Indulge in buying grease-free face wipes, which can efficiently prevent oil accumulation. Ideal for people with tight schedules, these cleansing tissues are a quick way to blot out the extra oil. Their portability makes it easy to fit them in a desk drawer or gym bag. NORMAL SKIN With a good balance of oil

and moisture, this is a combination of the above two skin types. People that fall in this category are less prone to experiencing acne. However, skin blemishes are inevitable, and acne can also be triggered due to weather changes. A balanced diet, adequate hydration and a proper skincare regimen can control their growth to a great extent. The best part is that you can experiment with different products, as the pores are not regularly exposed to oil and dust that can seep through. Make sure you avoid chemically treated products and over-exfoliating your skin. COMBINATION SKIN A super common category, combination skin type is a blend of oily and dry skin that exist together. Often mistaken with normal skin, in this skin type, the T-zone of the face, comprising of the forehead, nose and chin tends to produce relatively more oil than the cheeks and facial periphery. Those who fall in this category have more open pores and shiny skin texture. Also, blackheads tend to occur more often to such individuals. Dual skin type needs a dual action. Focus on spot treatment by using cleansers which are gentle on your skin. Moisturise when necessary and blot away areas which tend to release more oil.

FOOD TO UPGRADE YOUR SKIN DEFENSE GARLIC: EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-MICROBIAL PROPERTIES, GARLIC IS IDEAL FOR ELIMINATING THE BACTERIA WHICH CONTRIBUTES TO DANDRUFF AND CAN LEAD TO ACNE BREAKOUTS. LEMON: LEMON HELPS BALANCE THE PH LEVELS OF YOUR SKIN, WHICH, IN TURN, PREVENTS PIMPLES AND ENCOURAGES HEALTHY SKIN. BERRIES: ANTI-OXIDANTS AND VITAMIN C PRESENT IN BERRIES ACT AS A COMBO ATTACK AGAINST PESKY DARK SPOTS, THESE STOP THEM FROM EVEN FORMING IN THE FIRST PLACE. PAPAYA: THIS WONDER FRUIT HELPS IN EXFOLIATING THE SKIN. IT ALSO FADES ACNE SCARS AND PREVENTS FURTHER ACNE BREAKOUTS. SWEET POTATOES: A GOOD SOURCE OF VITAMIN A, SWEET POTATOES ARE IDEAL FOR FIGHTING ACNE AND WRINKLES.

Celebrity personal trainer Mike Ryan is a health and fitness expert that walks the walk, demonstrated by the amazing physical shape he maintains in light of his allencompassing position as consultant to both Hollywood and Bollywood’s elite. Mike also runs a thriving training business in California, where, in addition to his celebrity clients, he assists busy executives in getting into their best shape, by hitting the gym. He has effectively used the knowledge gained over his 25 years of experience in the health and fitness industry. The results are often seen on the big screen. Getting his start in the early 90s as a consultant to major sporting stars, Mike is an old school bodybuilder at heart. Here are some edited excerpts of our conversation with him, on his approach to getting the best results. Tell us a bit about yourself and how did you get involved in the business of health, wellness, and personal training? Growing up in America, there

fhmindia.com

was always a fascination for sports, fitness and training. As a young boy I was very athletic and into sports. I realised that in order to train and compete at the highest levels, I needed to learn how to work out with weights. I studied anatomy, physiology, and nutrition from learned weight training experts in America. So, basically I got involved in fitness and personal training through athletics at an early age. You have also been a model. Could you share your experience in both the modelling and fitness industry. Also, how did it begin for you? I was actually lucky enough to be discovered while training at the gym. A famous photographer approached me and asked if I was a model. He asked to do a test shoot with me, and I submitted the photos that he had clicked to numerous fitness publications. A day later, I was called and offered the AA Marlin contract with IAS and Muscle Media publications. That was the beginning of my modeling career. I feel I’m very lucky to model in the fitness industry. Unlike most modelling gigs where health is not a concern, in fitness modelling your health and wellness is a priority. Fitness is emerging as one of the fastest-growing segments in the healthcare sector. Do you think there is enough scope for fitness experts globally? I have been fortunate enough to travel the world, and in those travelling experiences, I have noticed a dramatic shortage in

fitness experts globally. I have been to numerous places where there is a lack of knowledge, gym equipment as well as certified trainers. I’m hoping in the near future this trend will change for the better. We imagine training and work take up a lot of your time. What hobbies and interests do you have, to balance out your life? I agree that being a trainer and working in the fitness industry definitely consumes a lot of my time. Whenever I get some free time to relax, I enjoy reading a good book, visiting museums, as well as

“Preparation, knowledge and leaving your ego at the door will help you enjoy fitness, for years to come.”

local art galleries. Living on Venice beach, I see a wide arrange of graffiti artists everywhere, and it’s very cool to see their work. My other activities range from ice hockey, surfing, to basically chilling out on the beach. Are there any precautions that should be taken while doing strenuous workouts, in order to avoid muscle injury? Before I engage with a client, I make sure that they have been properly checked by their physician. The best way to avoid any injury while training is to have proper knowledge before you actually enter the gym. Preparation, knowledge, and leaving your ego at the door will help you enjoy fitness training for years to come. Fitness is an integral part of our lives, and as a trainer you always have to stay at the top of your game. What major exercises would you suggest for muscle building? When it comes to shaping one’s physique, I believe you have to train every muscle efficiently and strenuously to get the desired result. There is no specific set of

exercises that you can just do. When a client engages in my services, he has to be prepared to work hard and efficiently. We aim to train everyone and anyone, with no exceptions. What are your views on supplements? Which ones do you use? I’m a huge fan of supplements. The thing to remember though, is that supplements are made to add to a proper diet and training regimen. I use protein shakes, multi-vitamins, and BCAA’s for connective tissue and joint repair. There are a whole host of supplements that one can try. I recommend you to first define your goal, as in what do you want to accomplish, and then proceed by using the supplements that will help you achieve those goals. Basically, supplements do work and I recommend people to try them. Judging by your popularity, you have a physique that is in demand. How do you work on improving it consistently? In my profession, my body is my

12

business card. Working in Hollywood and Bollywood, my clients want to see what they can achieve, and I like to be a living example. I motivate and challenge myself daily. For me it’s an inner desire to work on perfection everyday. I try to encourage everyone I work with to do the same. To challenge yourself daily is a great goal to have. You are a trainer to the stars, be it in Bollywood or Hollywood. What is your approach to their fitness regimen? Do you design each programme based on the individual’s personal requirements? When I embark on a fitness journey with my clients, it is all based on one simple thing; what is the goal? Often it is a scene where you will be shirtless or showing a lot of body. So the program will be designed according to what the actor has to portray. How was your experience training Hugh Jackman for his role in Wolverine and Dwyane

“In my profession, my physique is my business card. My clients want to see what they can achieve.”

“The Rock” Johnson for his onscreen roles? I believe I’m extremely fortunate to have worked with Hollywood and Bollywood’s biggest stars. It was an amazing experience working with guys like Hugh, The Rock, Aamir Khan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and John Abraham as they love to engage in physical activity. They love training, and they push themselves to endless limits. Again I feel I’m blessed to work with such cool, fun and dynamic people that really make my job a blessing rather than work. The fact that you train so hard for your physique is quite inspirational. Do you consider yourself strong-minded? How does this mindset influence your life? Sometimes I wonder if I am strong-minded or just stubborn. Whenever I put my mind into something, I go at it at a1000 miles an hour. I take the same approach when it comes to fitness. Every time

fhmindia fhmindia

I train, I try and lift as heavy as I can, as hard as I can, with as much grit and determination as possible. I believe when my clients see me work this hard they know they can’t make any excuses or give less than a100 per cent effort. As I mentioned before, I like to lead by example. Speaking of champions, who do you admire in the world of bodybuilding and fitness, and why? During my fitness journey, I have come across many individuals, but my idol is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Crazily enough, we have become dear friends over the years. He has been a mentor, friend, coach and training partner. He invites me to parties, dinners, and I spend the holidays over at his house. It has been a wonderful and amazing experience for me. What is your approach to nutrition, and how should someone struggling with muscle gain improve by eating right. Any tips? Nutrition is a science. When you are looking to achieve physical perfection, attack your nutrition like you would with your training. Know exactly what works for you and your body type. A lot of times it will be a trial-and-error method, which can be very frustrating. Don’t quit. Find what works for you, be it high carbs, low carbs or the common no-carbs, high protein formula. Find a diet that works for you and stick to it.

Swiss Ball Shoulder Press

BOUNCE

Sitting on a Swiss ball can be fun. Now take a medicine ball and get that blood flowing all over your body by practising shoulder presses. It will actively engage all the muscles in your body and tighten your core.

To sculpt a rock hard physique and work those core muscles, you don’t have to do much. This simple equipment is just what you need. By MRINALINI SINGH

Swiss Ball Decline Push-ups A lot different (read difficult) than a regular push-up, this exercise takes bodyweight training to another level.

W

hen we think about fitness, the aspect of stability usually takes a backseat. But did you know that stability training has the potential to extend your lifespan and improve your athletic performance? The answer is yes, it can. Thus, to follow up on our BOSU ball feature, we have another fun and effective equipment for your perusal, the Swiss ball. This big ball is not just to kick around at the gym, and only sit on when you’re tired of lifting weights. You can use it in different ways to build up a core like never before and increase your chances of developing greater strength.

fhmindia.com

A great tool for stretching, the Swiss ball reconditions the back, pelvis, hip muscles, and knee joints. Furthermore, a 2006 study revealed that a Swiss ball is an excellent way to get back into form after an injury as it reduces muscle strain and improves spine mobility. Thus, it will help you develop an improved posture, core stability, and muscle balance. Not just these elements, but you can also improve your cardiovascular system by adopting a lower-impact exercise with it. However, a word of caution, “to reap all the benefits of the Swiss ball, you must know how to use it accurately. Otherwise, you will see zero improvements and might even injure yourself,”

says Dushyant Singha, a fitness coach working at a premier gym in Abu Dhabi. The versatility of the Swiss ball is such that not only first-timers but even experienced people can benefit from its use. “The ability to correct bad posture and improve the spines’ health is just a few reasons why you should definitely incorporate it in your workout routine,” Dushyant adds. One easy way to utilise a Swiss ball is as a replacement for a bench. If you’re habitual to exercising with a bench, switch it with a Swiss ball. It will fire up your workout in a completely new fashion. However, be sure to start with a lesser weight as opposed to what you would use with a bench to avoid any injuries.

fhmindia fhmindia

Try to balance your legs on the Swiss ball and do as many push-ups as you can, that simple.

Swiss Ball Crunches Improve the range of motion in your lower back and get those abdominal muscles on fire with Swiss ball crunches. Just remember to not put too much stress on your neck while attempting this exercise.

Swiss Ball Bent-over Row Similar to bent-over rowing on a bench, here you need to balance your body and row on the ball. This will not only workout your back, but the effort to not fall will keep your core active at all times.

TRAIN SMARTER, FUEL BETTER

Celebrity personal trainer, fitness expert, and the creator of BodyProCoach, Maahek Nair demonstrates how nutrition and fitness go hand in hand. By TEAM FHM

You have trained celebrities like Kartik Aaryan, Maniesh Paul, and now Shraddha Kapoor. Do you find yourself learning from your students? My trainees have taught me how to be disciplined and focused. On a regular day I push myself beyond 16 hours of work, and when I am tired I always think about them and push myself further to give my best. Another thing I learnt is, despite being so popular and having such big market value they are always grounded and polite. What is the most common fitness goal of your celebrity clients? Although there are several different requirements of my clients, as far as a celebrities are concerned, most of them come with the fitness goal of having a flat abdomen, lean face and a pleasing aesthetic look. I aim at helping them achieve the same.

Each body has its own potential and limitation. How do you make sure each person’s training plan is truly personalised? We do a detailed fitness assessment with every person, which is based on their muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, as well as flexibility and core strength. The workout plan is programmed around that. A detailed assessment of their food history, and past or current health requirements, helps in programming the nutrition plan. There are many fitness and dietary trends that are discussed in detail on the Internet these days. According to you, how can one decide what suits them best? It all depends on the goal of the person and the current phase they are in. However, if fitness enthusiasts want to explore more

to a variety of effective classes, there are so many options available here to help you reach your individual fitness goals.

Fitness is a constantly evolving process. What changes have you seen in the health industry so far? I believe fitness has no bar and no age restrictions for beginners. It is something that can be done by anyone, from10 years to 90 years. There are various programmes such as TRX, ViPR, Piloxing, Strong Zumba, CrossFit, Pilates and more, which have evolved in the last five to eight years. I believe it’s growing year by year. We at BodyProCoach believe that no single training regimen is perfect. We combine weight training with core strengthening and high-intensity training programmes for our members to help them evolve into the fittest version of themselves. From personal and group training,

What is that one thing that makes your fitness regimen complete? Strength and conditioning along with Reformer Pilates make my fitness regimen complete. What training principles do you live by, in your personal life? Discipline and consistency is the key to success in my opinion. Fitness trainers are often seen recommending supplements, but nutritionists are against the practice. Since you are involved on both sides, what is your take on building a body with the help of protein powders? FROM EXPERT’S CORNER I personally believe there

Your perfect treat is ready. is no need to have protein supplements if you have a really well calculated organic macro dense nutrition plan. In the case of people who are vegan, I do advise plant-based protein powders as their sources of protein become extremely less and it thus becomes challenging. Furthermore, protein acts as an immunity booster and helps faster recovery.

Maahek Nair with her husband, Shraddha Kapoor and others

“Fitness has no bar and no age to start. It is for anyone, from 10 years to 90 years.” These days, social media is an influential but timeconsuming platform. How convenient do you find it for your business? I feel social media is a great platform. We have our own BodyProCoach channel on YouTube, where we have posted more than 250 videos on training and nutrition. Apart from YouTube, other mediums like Instagram, Twitter etc., help you connect with like-minded people, which is very important for overall well-being. What kind of diet plan would you suggest for the foodies, especially during the festive season, so that they can eat good and look good at the same time? I highly recommend intermittent fasting and Keto diet. It does not restrict you from eating any of your favourite snacks or desserts. One such dessert recipe is Keto Chocolate Mousse, you should definitely try it, festive season or not.

Supplements

FAD OR FAB?

With every fitness enthusiast vouching for supplements, we look for the real deal and focus on one at a time. By SHIVPRIYA BAJPAI

R

ecently, dietary supplements have taken the fitness industry by storm. From athletes to bodybuilders, everybody seems to swear by them. With social media having a major role to play in our lifestyle shift, health conscious people are popping pills and drinking shakes in an attempt to look like their fitness role models. From protein powders, multivitamins to amino-acids, the

16

October 2019

market is flooded with supplements known to be catalysts in the process of muscle synthesis; and we are here to throw some light on the one that is trending these days–L-arginine. L-arginine is a semi-essential amino-acid that helps in the build-up of protein and performs various other physiological functions, as well. It is further known as a precursor of Nitric Oxide, a property beneficial in circulation. However, arginine is

not naturally synthesised in the body, therefore, it is crucial to consume foods that are rich in it. Nuts, seeds, red meat, fish, dairy, and eggs are known to contain L-arginine that can replenish the body’s requirement. Since it is a building block of protein, fitness enthusiasts have started consuming L-arginine supplements to aid muscle building. In an attempt to expedite the process, they tend to go overboard with the consumption of the same. We spoke to Dr. Shikha Mahajan, Holistic Nutritionist, and founder of Diet Podium, to understand the pros and cons of this supplement. On being asked about her opinion on L-arginine as a muscle synthesis supplement, she says, “This component is projected in studies to promote muscle gain. However, this should be taken with a pinch of salt as most of these studies are funded by supplement companies. There are much healthier, safer, and provenly effective ways of gaining muscle mass, and L-arginine is not really

fhmindia fhmindia

worth the hype. Talking about the pros and cons of the supplement, Dr. Shikha explains, “L-arginine is an expensive drug used to treat angina, hypertension, peripheral arterial disease, and chronic kidney disease. Any drug as potent as this can have serious repercussions on the body, which does not have these diseases. Side effects like low blood pressure, fainting, cirrhosis or even heart attacks are quite common in people taking unmonitored dozes of these.” She further explains that it is advisable to go for natural sources of L-arginine, and the best course of action is to consume a supplement that is proven to be more safe and effective. Dr. Shikha concludes that, “Not only is consuming L-arginine for a long duration hazardous, even using it for a short duration is not advisable. This type of a drug should only be consumed under the expert advice of a nutritionist or a doctor, and regular monthly blood tests should be done to monitor any repercussions.”

eil Nitin Mukesh embodies virtues which are fast disappearing in today’s world. Versatile in his professional approach, he focuses on pushing limits and raising the bar for every feat that he undertakes. Our Bollywood actors have always endorsed fitness and the importance of having a fit body. While six-pack abs are synonymous with almost every actor now, there are few who still stand out of the lot and are termed the fittest of the fit. Neil epitomises what it means to be one of those actors who are ready to burn the midnight oil, and stay in shape while keeping the healthy and natural route in mind.

With a family lineage of music and melody, Neil can also be called a boy with the golden spoon. But destiny was set to make him known amongst the masses as a diligent actor, who is versatile with the roles that he takes up. Amidst his busy schedule and an intense workout at the gym, Neil opens up about turning into a producer, creating his own content and being the best bad guy onscreen. Edited excerpts... You come from a family of singers, yet you chose to be an actor. What made you bypass the musical route for the theatrical and commercial aspect? I like to don one hat and add many feathers. I’m an artist and that’s the umbrella brand, and all of the rest are just offshoots. After cinema, I guess it’s music and production that are my stress busters. Music anchors me and helps me connect with my emotional side. Becoming a producer was a long awaited dream and something I worked towards for many years. I happened to meet Madan Paliwal of Miraj Group and he was kind enough to back my vision. I think everything I do compliments the other and it just polishes that multi-faceted tag. Someday I’d like to launch my own restaurant chain because I dig quality cuisine and can cook up a storm. I’m actually a pure-bred romanticist, when I make a commitment, I endorse it a 101 per cent.

I’m a pretty culturally rooted man and I like to try my hands at different things, that I don’t do 365 days in a year. Cinema for me is an adventure where I get to create, evolve, and yet have fun all along the way. Every hero is incomplete without a villain. The grey shades and negative roles attract me. I am constantly building my empire even if it means putting smaller blocks together first. I’ve never felt the need to be answerable to a multitude of people, the selfassurance needs to come from within and that happens only when you believe in your roadmap and you’re not constantly seeking approval. There have been a lot of ups and downs, but life has to have a graph; it can’t be a straight line.

I have worked with some fine filmmakers such as, AR Murugadoss, Vishal Bharadwaj, Sriram Raghavan, Madhur Bhandarkar, Sooraj Barjatya and more. I’m grateful that I’ve sustained so far. Initially, people said that I would probably not last too long because a singer’s grandson and son becoming an actor is a major question mark. I’m glad I’ve been able to carve a niche for myself, no matter how small it is. At least people know of my existence and I am happy and proud of that.

How did Saaho come about? What was it about the role that appealed to you? Saaho is one of the most exciting films of my career. When I heard the script for the first time, I just knew I had to be a part of it since it felt like larger than life cinema. Today young directors like Sujeeth, Ali Abbas Zafar, Siddharth Anand, Aditya Dhar are booming and that’s why working on films like Saaho and Bypass Road is interesting because there is so much you can learn from these young minds.

When I signed the film I had a much leaner body. But the character demanded me to gain a couple of kilos and bulk up to give a mature feel to my character. Since the past 3 years I’ve been trying to maintain this weight so that it looks ideal on screen. As luck would have it, for Bypass Road, I also needed to put on a few extra kilos and we were shooting for both the films simultaneously. Being a multilingual film, I had to learn Tamil. I am familiar with Telugu since I had done Kaththi with AR Murugadoss. There was a huge take back home element with Saaho as I learnt immensely. I had to constantly be at the top of my game and make my on-screen presence felt since I was being pitted against some fine actors.

“EVER SINCE I’VE BECOME A FATHER, I AM MORE RESPONSIBLE. NOW, I KNOW THAT I NEED TO CREATE A LEGACY FOR MY DAUGHTER. ” What kind of a workout are you following these days, given that you have to constantly work on transforming your body for every role? I follow a six-day workout routine along with cardio every alternate day. Sometimes, I do cardio daily, depending upon the body type I’m trying to achieve. I spend around an hour and 15 minutes every day on my workout. I concentrate on one body part, with three sets of six exercises, 15-20 repetitions per set, after which I do cardio for approximately 45 minutes to an hour. I love running, swimming, playing squash, tennis and aerobics. The entertainment industry comprises of hectic schedules with unending working hours. How do you remain so dedicated to working out? I think being fit is an indispensable ingredient for holistic well-being. Being in the business of entertainment, fitness plays a more imperative role because there is a corporal representation to constantly cater to. It’s all about how you emerge on the big screen at the end of the day and being fit is an important criterion for being termed as desirable. I’m fit largely because I enjoy being fit, so its 90 per cent free will and 10 per cent compulsion. Judging by your popularity, you have a physique that is in demand. How do you work on improving it consistently? I come from a family with the tendency to put on weight, so I kept my eye on fitness from as early as class eight. I associate fitness with contentment. You should be fit so that you stay happy. Fitness is not a quest for a six-pack. Achieving six-packs is a good feat but if one has acquired it by consuming steroids then it is absolutely of no use. I prefer going the natural way. How do you plan your diet with such rigorous workouts?

I start loading myself with carbohydrates like sweet potato and bananas because I work out from five in the evening. Post workout, I have a good protein shake that comprises of 40gms of protein. ndia has had a fascination with bodybuilding that goes back more than a century. This unique profession is practised informally by millions of men and even some women in our country. Yet in all that time and amongst all those people, there wasn’t a single one who reached out and touched the title for themselves, until there was one. The title is the prestigious IFBB Pro and the man is Bhuvan Chauhan. He is not only the first Indian to win an IFBB Pro show, but has also achieved the distinction of being the first one to qualify for the legendary Mr Olympia competition. In addition to all the titles, he also juggles the life of a professional trainer who helps other people and athletes achieve their own goals through dogged determination. With such accolades under his belt and a humble head on his shoulders, we caught up with Mr Chauhan at the UFC Gym, to learn

what makes him stand out from the rest. Every man is a bodybuilding enthusiast to some degree. Tell us what led you to this turning point of being a professional from an enthusiast? I was always an enthusiast, but it took me some time to turn it from a hobby into a profession. Once I delved into learning about what goes into building a good physique, I just fell in love with the entire process. My first win gave me the confidence that I do have the genetics for it, and if I work hard enough, I could one day turn my passion into my profession. Being an IFBB pro is the goal of every person who considers themselves a bodybuilder, but you were the first Indian to achieve it. How does it feel? It feels great when you are the first to achieve such a big achievement. It feels great to know that you are setting the bar for every other athlete that follows. Becoming an IFBB pro was my goal, and I feel great that I can motivate and inspire others to reach their goals as well. My next goal is to become Mr Olympia and that’s what I am going to focus on next. Fitness athletes are known for their extreme dedication and regimented schedules. Tell us something about a regular day in the life of a Mr Olympia trainer? As a professional Olympian & an athlete my day starts with morning cardio. I do some abs training and some stretching because of my injury. After that, I work on my client programmes for

three to four hours and then take a nap. Following that, I go to the gym for a full training session, after which I work for another two to three hours. I get a chance to read a book or watch some TV before I have to go for cardio again. This is my third and last trip to the gym, after which I eat my dinner and watch some more TV before going to bed. Bodybuilders often spend more time feeding than they do in the gym. Give us an idea of what kind of diet it takes to build a Mr Olympia worthy physique? Are there any foods that you are fed up of eating? What is the one thing you wish you could eat all the time but can’t? For a professional athlete diet is the most important thing, and I like to eat clean foods such as chicken, egg whites, fish, and whey protein for protein intake. For carbs, I stick to rice, oats and also some bread. For fats, I prefer avocadoes, nuts and peanut butter. Since I enjoy eating clean, my favourite cheat meal is sushi because it is still a clean food while also being a good change from my regular diet. You have a company that provides coaching to upcoming bodybuilders. How has your view on fitness evolved after making the transition from athlete to coach? I enjoy mentoring and coaching other athletes and regular people as well. My position allows me to motivate others and help them transform their body. There is no better

It gives them confidence and makes me happy as well, since I am doing something for others and in a way making their life better. You recently signed on with Mon Ethos Pro. How do the company and their goals fit into your bodybuilding plans? Mon Ethos Pro is an athlete management company which I recently signed up with. They are helping me develop a coaching app, as well as with managing everything because so far I have been a one-man army. It is getting to the point where it is too much to handle everything, so they will be handling my sponsorship and also my plans. Who inspires you to keep going in this field? Have you gotten the chance to meet any of your idols so far? If so, what was the experience like? I am a self-motivated individual, and I try not to rely on others to inspire me or keep me motivated. I haven’t gotten a chance to meet him yet but it is my hope that it will happen someday, as he has been my inspiration since before I started bodybuilding.

You can adopt some easy weight loss strategies during the festival season to keep your weight under check. Start with increasing your daily water intake. It will improve your body’s metabolism, and reduce your food intake as you will feel fuller. Secondly, the festive season comes with the best weather in India, so you can go for a few days of morning walks to enjoy it even more.

The main reason behind putting on weight during the festival season is undoubtedly the sugarloaded, delectable, and highcalorie snacks. Mindless eating and snacking unnecessarily during festivals does nothing but takes your diet plans for a toss. The only way out is to be watchful of your snacking habits. You can satisfy your hunger pangs by choosing healthier alternatives.

Festive season comes along with high-calorie food that tends to degrade your diet plans. The season adds on to the uncontrollable cravings as well. Sweets filled with ghee and sugar contain a lot of calories and sticking on your diet chart is nothing less than a task. But keeping some tips in mind such as following your diet chart, and consuming plenty of water can help you stay strong.

Festive season is well known for being the destroyer of peoples’ fitness and health regimens. The best thing to manage the weight is plan and prepare for it. Keep training or at least stay as active as possible. Get it done early in the day before things get festive. Take responsibility for what you consume. Also, don’t just sit around doing nothing, get up and help people in the kitchen, dance or take the stairs.

YANSHUI BEEHIVE FIREWORK FESTIVAL, TAIWAN Many of us think that sky lanterns and pyrotechnics bring good luck and charm to a new year, while locals in the Yanshui district of Taiwan believe that the more you’re hit by the rocket, the better. launches millions of fireworks directly into the crowd. With motorcycle helmets, protective gear and a swig or two of liquid courage, thousands of people take to the streets just to be battered by explosions. Just make sure your expensive belongings are safe.

KONAKI SUMO, JAPAN Two giant sumo wrestlers step in the ring, looking threatening and ready to attack. This might be the general definition of sumo wrestling or so you would think. As tough as these wrestlers look, each of them holds a baby, and the goal is to make the opponents baby cry. This may seem like a setup for a comedy show but to the Japanese, it is a representation of good health and warding off the evil spirits from the body.

MONKEY BUFFET EATING, THAILAND

THAIPUSAM, INDIA

If the previously mentioned festivals do not make your body cringe, this one surely will. The mother of all crazies, Thaipusam, celebrated in India, majorly in the state of Tamil Nadu, can be interpreted as a cruel mutilation of human flesh. This daunting ceremony is an act of devotion, demonstrated by suffering from painful piercing of hooks and skewers on the body. The event celebrates the mythical moment when Goddess Paravati handed a spear to Murugan (SouthIndian deity) to fight against the demons. So, if you are ready to see people mutilating their own flesh, don’t forget to check out this festival.

When you visit an animal sanctuary, you are asked not to feed the animals. Well in Lopburi, Thailand, the case is quite the opposite. Here, massive banquet tables with over 4,000 kgs of fruit, candies and various other Thai dishes are gorgeously arranged for the monkeys to feast on. People in Thailand believe that the monkeys are descendants of the Monkey King, a divine character from Thai mythology. Thus, honouring these creatures will bring both good luck and fortune in life. Well, whatever the case is, one thing is clear that Thailand is certainly taking care of their wild animals.

Host and chef Rishim Sachdeva cooks with us a delectable conversation, exhibiting the idea that “we are what we eat.” By AKANKSHA ARORA

journey towards fuelling the brain with recipes, specially curated for the mind. How can we achieve mental fitness via food? Does our method of cooking also play a role? Yes, we can. We are what we eat. Incorporating minor changes to your food habits may go a long way in achieving brain health. Consuming the right ingredients at the right time is the key to a healthy, active, and alert mind. Cooking techniques help you create the best from the ingredients you have at hand. The goal is to extract the best flavour from humble ingredients and work with them, in order to create the best version possible. My vision is to keep food simple and fresh. The bottom line is food should taste good and wholesome. The relationship between the man behind the cooking and the eatery is inseparable. According to you, does the restaurant make the chefs, or do the chefs make the restaurant? Both go hand in hand. Chefs need to understand the business aspect and the restaurateur needs to be on-board with the chef’s perspective, which involves encouraging the creativity and simplicity of the cook.

Throw some light on the concept of your debut show, Fit & Fast - Fuel Your Brain. What made you choose this show as your television debut? It was the concept that made me choose this show as my TV debut. Plus Living Foodz was a great platform being a leading lifestyle channel. There is a lot of information available around, on how to stay fit, but brain health often gets ignored. So we wanted to really dive deep down and pick up everyday ingredients that promote mental health. The show includes various superfood-heroes, some

Masters of the cookery world often end up writing books with the aim of sharing their cooking experiences and techniques. Are you planning one too? Many share their journey, but I believe that it is a little too early for me. Some share recipes, which I don’t believe in. But few like me are really good at teaching how to cook. So yes, I am also working on a book that does exactly the same.

Spain, Vietnam, France, and London for 16 years, you are back home in India. According to you, what sets Indian cooking apart from the world? India as a country is blessed with all the seasons. Our demographics are so varied, from coastal regions where seafood is in abundance to the desert, which is home to some incredible cactus recipes; going up to extreme weathers where preservation is the way to survive. All of this put together really sets us apart. The vast array of flavours we present as a country is an inviting opportunity. The minute you feel that you know Indian food, that’s the time to pack your bags and travel across the country to delve deeper into the hyper local cuisines and explore. This exploration provides you with a fresh perspective of how rich and diverse our food habits, ingredients, and methods are. Lastly, what is more important while experimenting with cooking techniques; maintaining the authenticity or putting your own mark on it? Every person, chef or not needs to find their own distinctive style. Being a chef, that mark should be present in his or her food. Techniques can be learnt, flavours can be developed, but it is the individual style and their love for what they do which sets the tone.

After learning a wide array of cuisines from across the world;

CLASSIC

Redefined There’s nothing like a well-made cocktail, but when rum is involved, the spirit instantly takes the drink in your hand to the next level. By CHITMAN KANWAR AHUJA

I

f you could bottle the taste of the tropics, it would taste exactly like Reserva Ocho, an eight-year-old golden sipping rum from the house of Bacardi. Created in 1862, Reserva Ocho is one of the oldest private rums in the world, enjoyed for seven generations by the brand as their personal reserve, and has now been introduced to the world. A spirit aged under the Caribbean sun in American White Oak barrels and filtered through charcoal for a smooth finish. The unique taste of this rum has inspired cocktail pioneers to invent some of the world’s most famous recipes. But, the one that we have our hearts set on, is the ever so timeless Ocho Old Fashioned. Let’s travel back to the mid 1800s, and rewind to a time when life was slowly enjoyed while sipping on a cocktail. Once you pour in 60ml of the Bacardi Reserva Ocho in a chilled old fashioned glass, it exuberates a rich mahogany tint, making it an enchanting drinking experience. It has warm tasting notes of prune, apricot, nutmeg and vanilla. This simple yet iconic drink incorporates 5ml of sugar syrup and a dash of angostura bitter. The spirit is then garnished with orange essential oils from the orange zest, which is dropped in the cocktail; to complete it’s robust journey, cubes of ice seal the deal. The flavourful secret lies in the special, rich, super-aged rum—the kind you see people savouring on a sprawling patio filled with Latin bomba music, on a breezy street near the beach.

1OAK, NEW DELHI But first, cocktails. This bright eclectic pink signboard is one of the first things that you will notice when you step into this recently renovated café and bar, 1Oak. The spirit of cocktails is high with this one; and as our nights get colder and days become darker, it is time to say farewell to the cheeky fruity drinks of summer, and welcome some grown-up cocktails. 10ak offers an array of scrumptious cuisines such as Japanese, Lebanese, Thai, and Chinese, which are also revamped from scratch. Starting from what we ordered in cocktails, our heart was set on the Oak Smoked Negroni, which delivered on its name, by being smoky and sexy. This spot is also well known for its creative cocktails, such as The Berry That Cran, Hibiscus Tropical, and Rob Roy. We sat at the bar which was quite suitable for a Saturday, as the place was fully packed (hint:

We tried the Sicilian Arancini, Mushroom Stroganoff, and Roasted Chicken Dumpling, which were indescribably delightful. For dessert, the Italian Tiramisu stole the show and was a delightful ending to our hearty meal. There is nothing that we could find a fault in, except for the Salted Caramel Brownie shake that was loaded with sugar like there’s no tomorrow. 1Oak embodies a classic chic, after-dark innovative vibe, with high wooden chairs and plush leather sofas, to steep the place in the modern aesthetic feel. GIFT OF

TIME

This festive season, save your budget with these beautiful yet pocketfriendly watches. By PANCHAM BHARDWAJ

CITIZEN ECO-DRIVE PERPETUAL CALENDAR WATCH - BL8144-89H

A Swiss brand that made a name for itself in Japan, Citizen has grown over the years into one of the most recognisable watchmakers with a host of advanced movements to their credit. One of the most unique ones is the eco-drive, which uses light to recharge the movement of the timepiece. In this model, it also gets a perpetual calendar feature that highlights information about the day, date, and month along with hours (including AM/PM), minutes and even seconds. All of this is protected by a sapphire crystal glass that hosts the elegant and a bit crowded face, which is decorated by careful use of gold, grey, and black. The hands feature streaks of a luminous white paint that helps you see at night. The watch will cost you about `28,800 to own.

EMPORIO ARMANI AVIATOR WATCH - AR11104

. . . 14

The name Armani carries with it a legacy of fashionable designs and high-quality construction. This is reflected beautifully in this Aviator inspired model that is made from a polished stainless steel case, which features rounded lugs and smooth crowns. The strap is equally intricate with a shiny stainless steel mesh bracelet design that ends in a polished buckle clasp. The silver provides a great contrast to the all-black face of the watch that is protected under a domed mineral crystal glass. The rest of the face retains a clean look, with simple and thin markings for the hours, and an equally sleek look for the hands. The sub-dials for seconds and hours are recessed, just like the cut-out for the date window located near the bottom. All of this is powered by a quartz movement that features a two year warranty and will set you back around `24,495.

October 2019

FOSSIL TOWNSMAN NAVY WATCH - ME1138

Watches from the Townsman Twist series combine the look and feel of an automatic with the reliability of a quartz movement. In this particular model, the hour and minute hand run off a replaceable battery, while the second hand is powered by the natural motion of your wrist. You can even see most of the internals thanks to the exposed dial design that resides in a stainless steel body. The steel has been given a brushed rose gold finish to contrast nicely with the deep blue colour of the dial and the strap. The face features multiple sub-dials that show information about the date, hour of the day, and the day of the week as well. The strap is made from high-quality calfskin leather and can be switched with any other 22mm strap made by the company. This certainly makes for a versatile and unique gift, at a starting cost of around `16,195.

T

he festival season is upon us. This month alone is packed with everything from Dussehra to Diwali and even Karva Chauth. This means a month full of gifting opportunities and obligations that we simply can’t ignore. Thankfully, gifting doesn’t have to be a budgetbreaking activity, with these luxury watches that promise elegant designs at an affordable price. We have found a half a dozen options for all your celebratory needs, so have a look to see if something catches your eye.

HUGO BOSS CONTEMPORARY SPORT GRAND PRIX WATCH-1513475

Even though it is a huge brand in the fashion industry, Hugo Boss is still a relatively new name in the field of watchmaking. This particular model was inspired by the Grand Prix, which is evident in the perforated leather strap design that is reminiscent of driving gloves. The dial is equally functional and beautiful, with multiple sub-dials to indicate time intervals of 24 hours, a minute and even small seconds. The hand indicators have been pushed inwards to make space for a Tachymeter, with a separate box in place for indicating the change of date. All of this is controlled by a quartz movement, which is hidden within the polished stainless steel case and mineral crystal glass. The silver of the body is a nice contrast to the gold look of the hands and indexes, as well as the rich brown colour of the strap. You can get this fashionable timepiece at a cost of about `22,000.

TISSOT TRADITION CHRONOGRAPHT0636173603700W

A subsidiary of the biggest watchmaker in the world, Tissot is a well-reputed brand with a vast history, and technical mastery in the art of watchmaking. They often celebrate the journey that led them down this path by creating modern watches that feature design cues from decades ago. In this model, the company pays tribute to the simple yet elegant designs of the 1950s, with a classic white dial decorated by rose gold hands, and indexes that are complemented by the use of guilloche decorations. This simple looking watch gets a Swiss quartz movement, which supports the subdials that feature time information in intervals of 30 minutes, 60 seconds, and even 1/10th of a second. The structure is protected by a clear sapphire crystal glass, which makes the watch mildly water-resistant up to 30m/100ft. You can get this throwback to a bygone era for a cost of around `22,250, with a two years warranty.

SEIKO ANALOGUE WHITE DIAL MEN’S WATCH - SSC560P9

A home-grown player from Japan, Seiko has made a name for itself in the international market by being credited for producing the first quartz and automatic quartz watches, with all the components being made in-house. Since then, they have only upped the ante, with this model featuring the latest eco-drive technology that boasts six months of operations just by charging through sunlight. Also, the watch gets a perpetual calendar feature, with information about the day, date, hour, and seconds on display, in addition to an alarm clock and stopwatch. These details are highlighted through a simple contrast between white and black colours on the dial, with the use of rose gold to enhance the bezel, hands, and hour markings. The body and strap are both stainless steel with a polished look, while the dial features a sapphire crystal glass for protection. This competitive setup will cost you around `29,200, with a two years warranty.

SLIDE TO THE SIDE

SAME IN RANGE

A great example of how to turn a gimmick into a standout feature, we unravel the story behind pop-up cameras.

I

By PANCHAM BHARDWAJ

t’s unclear who fired the first shot in the bezel wars, but soon the whole smartphone market devolved into a deluge of form factors; from hideous notches to complicated slider mechanisms that hide that pesky selfie camera we can’t live without. Now that the users have had enough of weird cut-outs throwing their UI out of whack, it seems that most manufacturers have made peace with hiding the front camera inside the phone itself. This has led to a new skirmish about the best way of getting the camera out to take pictures. Most manufacturers are going with sliders while a few more expensive models try their hand at under-display cameras. Oppo is going to a whole another level with their Reno model, which has a one-of-a-kind side slide module that lifts from only one side. It is a lot bigger than vertical sliders, but that seems to add to the perception of sturdiness. In its new version, in addition to the more refined slider, the phone also features three cameras on the back that are interestingly placed under the Gorilla Glass that covers the entire back. The cameras combine to offer a 5x hybrid/20x digital zoom setup that is surprisingly usable in good lighting conditions. The slider mechanism does sacrifice the possibility of stereo speakers, but the single downward firing unit is loud enough to make up the difference. However, what all of this leads up to is the 6.5” AMOLED display that covers the entire front of the phone. It is great to look at with enough brightness for outdoor use. The rest of the specs are pretty standard; with a 4000mAh battery, 8GB RAM, 256GB

fhmindia.com

storage and a capable Snapdragon 730 chip. For a phone that costs `36,990, it is a good enough deal for multimedia users and selfie fanatics.

ONE PLUS 7 PRO This phone comes at the higher end of the price range at around `52,999. However, you do get more bang for your buck, with a Snapdragon 855 processor, UFS 3.0 storage and 12GB of RAM. There are three cameras on the back, one of which is the popular 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor. Rounding it up with a 90Hz 2K AMOLED display and a quite fast under-display fingerprint sensor, this phone is a strong competitor in the slider camera category.

REDMI K20 PRO At a lower starting price of `27,999, the phone is a tough contender for Reno2 and One Plus. With a 20MP front camera in a vertical slider, and a triple camera setup on the rear that also features a 48MP unit, the phone takes a straight shot at the competition. It even ups the ante with a Snapdragon 855 processor, which is a lot of performance at that price.

RAISING THE BAR As digital entertainment finally floods our smart TVs, get a soundbar to enhance the experience.

T

V’s have been the main source of family entertainment for decades now, with technology evolving to allow for a better quality audio-visual experience. However, even though the visual quality has improved by leaps and bounds, the audio delivery is

By PANCHAM BHARDWAJ

still quite limited due to the shape and size of the device, which has only shrunk as more and more models adopt the razor-thin look. This has forced customers to invest in secondary audio hardware if they want to enjoy a fuller sound. These audio devices come in all shapes and forms, going from traditional 2.1 speakers to ultra-sophisticated 7.1 home theatre systems. However, there is one type of sound system that has been specifically designed to address the space as well as the aesthetic issue involved with these types of TV-centric setups, i.e., soundbars. Today we take a closer look at a few affordable yet impactful offerings in the segment.

ZOOOK ROCKER STUDIO ONE This is easily one of the most affordable options available in the market, with a surprisingly deep and bass-heavy sound. The design adds a refreshing slanted look to the traditional box shape chosen by many. The integrated LED display is easy to read and uses large lettering to be more legible. The subwoofer packs a similar edgy look for the cut-out, with a side-firing design that helps create a nice sound profile. Between the two, the system packs a total

18

October 2019

output of around 130W that is supported by integrated digital sound processing. You also get lots of connectivity options, such as Bluetooth, AUX, Optical-in as well as HDMI ARC. This gives it the versatility to connect with thousands of devices, including but not limited to, smartphones, smart TVs, gaming consoles, and even PCs. For a base price of just `8,500, this is a great option for people looking for a high-end experience at a low price range.

PHILIPS HTL1510B Philips is a respected name in the electronics industry and they are known for offering quality products at an affordable price. The same holds true for this model as well, which comes in a front-firing box shape that looks imposing and can even be mounted on a wall. It comes paired with a reliable 2.1 channel subwoofer that uses a 4.5” low-frequency driver to deliver the sound, with a max output of 15 x 2; with

70W being delivered from the bar, and an additional 40W from the subwoofer. Like most models in this category, you can connect to it through Bluetooth or the still popular 3.5mm audio port. The setup works for any number of devices, including gaming consoles, and the output is consistent throughout the sound range. This is great for a device that only costs about `12,990.

BLAUPUNKT SBWL-02 The German brand is a solid contender in any sound system segment, and this holds true for this product as well, which packs a big punch in a super affordable package. The look is similar to the Philips unit, with an integrated display in the middle as well. The bar pulls off the piano black finish quite nicely without being too distracting. This new version is a definite upgrade over the SBWL-01 and also sounds

way more premium, thanks to Dolby Digital processing and a side-firing subwoofer that packs a huge 6.5” driver. The result is an impressive total output of 160W that sounds great. You can opt for multiple ways to connect with the system, such as Bluetooth, AUX, and USB as well as a much appreciated HDMI ARC port. This makes for a versatile package at just `9,990.

WK LIFE REMAX RTS 10 This wireless soundbar was created by a lifestyle company from Hong Kong, which is now looking to build its presence in the Indian market. The design reflects the lifestyle aspect perfectly, with a rounded body that is just wide enough to prevent any accidental rolling. The look is clean, with a minimal integrated display in the centre and a brushed colouring on the front that isn’t too reflective. In addition to the bar itself, the system also has a capable

fhmindia.com

fhmindia fhmindia

subwoofer that uses 5” drivers and a built-in digital signal processor to produce a good clean sound that holds clarity in the midrange and beyond. You can connect to the speaker through Bluetooth, or even an AUX cable, which certainly makes for a more uncompressed playback. We can’t comment on the long-term performance of the device but for a starting price of `16,599, it is still something worth considering.

We’ve seen you on screen since you were an eight-yearold, but how was life offscreen? Tell us about your most cherished childhood memory? My childhood was pretty much just like most kids. Apart from the fact that I got to do Kuch Kuch Hota Hai at a very early stage of my career and I did rise to fame at a very early age, everybody at my school and especially at home treated me just like they would treat any other kid. My parents kept me very grounded, so, acting and working at that age almost felt like it was a hobby. My favourite childhood memory would be of playing Anjali in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, especially the summer camp schedule because that was one of my favourite times, it felt like I was on this crazy holiday with a lot of amazing people.

I don’t treat that part of my life as a different part of me. I did Kuch Kuch Hota Hai when I was young and the fact that I am still working in the entertainment industry is just a step forward. I would definitely say that it is challenging but not in a fearful way. Fantasy have done your best, you shouldn’t let anything, any numbers or any opinions make you feel like a failure. If you took up something and gave your best, then you have already won. I don’t think that the box office number would ever make a difference to me, and that kind of failure does not bother me at all. A film role you would give up everything to be a part of? I absolutely loved the role that Natalie Portman played in Black Swan. It is one of my favourite movies, and her character and role would be my first pick. You have also been a part of the television industry for a while, how different is it from

working in a film? My work on television mainly revolves in the reality TV genre, and what that has in common with films, is that you need to invest a couple of months, give it your all during the shoot, and then move on and explore other new projects. I love this aspect of reality television and films. You get to explore different roles and various genres in a short span of time. For instance, I get to judge my own style show on MTV, but at the same time, I can shoot for a more acting-oriented Amazon Prime show. At the end of the day, it all depends on what kind of person you are, and the kind of things you like to do. If you weren’t a part of the

entertainment industry, what career would you have chosen for yourself? If I wasn’t in the entertainment industry, I would definitely be running an NGO for lions and tigers, or doing something for the felines because I absolutely love them. Even though I am in the entertainment industry, I am pretty sure that in the near future I will be investing my time in that field. Dance is a form of art which

When we talk about fitness, it is inevitable to talk about food. So, are you a conscious eater or an absolute foodie? I am an absolute foodie, but I am also somebody that makes conscious food choices. I really believe that health is everything. comes quite naturally to you. How did it feel to impress the audience with your moves in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa? I would say that Jhalak Dikhla Jaa was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, where I got to discover myself as a dancer. I always loved music, and I used to dance in front of the mirror but was never trained. Thus, the show helped me put my skills to test. Moreover, it is always amazing to get appreciated for the things you love to do. The audiences’ response was great, and even the contestants were always encouraging. We got some great remarks and compliments from the judges and that’s something very dear to me.

Fantasy health. I absolutely love exercising and I try to eat food that is nutritious. I also indulge. It is all about creating a balance between nutrition and health. It is just about making the right choices at the right time when your body needs it. Do you enjoy being single, or are you someone who wants to be in a committed relationship? I think I would say both, because I am really not somebody that doesn’t enjoy being single. I love the single life, I love that I get to do what I want, go where I want and I am not tied down to anything. But having said that, I would also assume that not being single and having companionship is also good

because you need to be in a relationship where you can have all the fun you have, whether you are single or not. Besides good looks, what are the three important things you are looking for, in a significant other? The first thing I would look for in someone would be kindness, somebody that’s kind always attracts me. Second would be compassion for all beings, nature, and animals. The third quality would be someone who is motivated to fulfil their purpose in life and is always thriving to be better every day. What’s a perfect date

I love swimming in the ocean. A great lunch or dinner would also do, but it should be by the beach. It is said that the key to a man’s heart is through his tummy. What we’d like to know is, what would a man have to do to impress you? I am genuinely very attracted to people that are kind. If I see somebody that is genuinely caring, I am always humbled and super impressed with them. Thus, the key to my heart would be kindness. What are you like when you are not in front of the camera and away from the glitz and glamour of the reel world? I am a super relationship-oriented person. I love spending time with people that are close to me, which definitely puts my family and my friends first. I also love spending time with my two beautiful cats. When I am not shooting, I usually go and play with my friends’ babies or take my niece out. I absolutely love the people in my life.

KING FOR A DAY Live your own fairy tale for a day with these luxury rental cars.

By PANCHAM BHARDWAJ

T

he word luxury has been synonymous with cars ever since the first automobile was invented. In fact, until very recently, even owning a car was considered something of a luxury for most people. However, as more and more cars are launched at more and more affordable prices, the concept of luxury cars has undergone a transformation as well, with it now representing the heights of automotive engineering and creature comforts. Depending on the kind of money you are willing to spend, you can get luxury vehicles in all sorts of shapes and

sizes, with almost unlimited customisation options. Unfortunately, these high levels of quality and performance come at an increasingly premium price, which makes most of the models unaffordable for the majority of the population. Thankfully, in the modern world of rental and self-driving startups, even if you don’t have the budget to buy one of these vehicles, you can still enjoy the experience of being in one. Even we were surprised at the number of choices available in various cities, so we decided to whittle it down to a few select options that top our luxury car dream list.

HUMMER The Humvee remains one of the most versatile and well known off-road vehicle used by the U.S. army, and its civilian version is equally infamous. Made at the insistence of Arnold Schwarzenegger himself, the Hummer completely changed the way people thought of SUVs. The over-the-top presence of the vehicle has a certain charm to it, and even the somewhat conservative interior has enough space and character to make you feel like a king as you effortlessly manoeuvre all sorts of terrain in this capable off-roader. One of the few luxury SUV’s with a military origin, this vehicle retains its value even after all these years. Thankfully, even though it is discontinued now, you can still rent it through Kings of Car Hire, located in Mumbai. At an average price of `75,000 for eight hours, it will be an expensive ride though.

ROLLS ROYCE GHOST II For more than 100 years now, the name Rolls Royce has been the ultimate example of luxury and engineering prowess. These machines were made to carry barons of

industry and royalty alike, thus there is a strong focus on combining the best of all worlds to provide the ultimate travel experience. The Ghost II enjoys the benefit of this rich

legacy as it brings together the latest in performance and technology. The bespoke interiors transport you to another level of indulgence, as you barely feel the road

beneath while travelling in the lap of luxury. You too can enjoy all of this by renting it from KTC India in Delhi. Even at an average price of around `75,000 for eight hours, it is still worth it to feel like a king for a day.

JAGUAR XJ L For more than 50 years now, the XJ has excelled as the flagship full-size sedan from Jaguar. It not only represents the best that the brand can be, but also the best British engineering has to offer. The model combines the highperformance legacy of Jaguar sports cars with the comfort associated with high-end luxury brands. In the XJ L avatar, the car has been stretched even more to convert the rear section into a lounge. While it isn’t

This aspiration is not just based on the looks, but also the promise of blistering speed and ridiculous performance specs that justify the need for such a specific body type. However, owing to the exclusivity of the brand, the car remains

inaccessible to a majority of people who can barely get a test drive. Thankfully, a luxury mobility service called Go Hype is ready to make this dream come true, as they provide a Lamborghini as a self-drive rental car. The car seems to be

fhmindia fhmindia

as customisable as some of the other cars that it competes with, yet the design and build quality carry forth the same level of attention to detail. Considering all this, it is easy to guess how expensive these models can be and how exclusive this price tag can make them. Thankfully, Self Drives from Delhi can help you get that exclusive access, since they provide an XJ L as a self-drive rental car for just `50,000 a day.

located in Hyderabad and comes with a hefty rental charge of around `2 lakh for a day. This might seem extreme, but then again, there aren’t a lot of places that would rent you one in the first place, even with a driver. So it’s best to make the most of it while you can.

AGEING WITH

GRACE

SAME IN RANGE Mercedes S Class

The German carmaker refines its top of the line offering with a new avatar. By PANCHAM BHARDWAJ

E

very car company is known to follow a specific hierarchy in the models they manufacture depending on the price range as well as the target audience. Most manufacturers reserve the top of this line for their full-size sedans that feature a combination of all their technological advancements and performance prowess. In the case of BMW, the top tier is the 7 series, and it just got an update that brings a lot of subtle changes to the flagship sedan. The first and the most noticeable change is the grille, which is now bigger and even more accentuated thanks to the smaller Laserlight headlights that provide a nice contrast to the size increase. The bonnet has been redesigned to match the new look, which has resulted in the front-end being raised by about 50mm. These readjustments continue throughout the body, as the body lines get a bit more defined, while the chrome gets a bit more overused. The

30

October 2019

interior touches are even more subtle, yet they carry forward the new design language, which trims any unnecessary fat from the body. The highlights of the interior are the ‘Executive Lounge’ rear seats which are heated, ventilated, multi-way adjustable and feature a massaging component as well. In addition to all these aesthetic changes, the 7 Series also gets a host of engine options, with the BMW 730Ld getting a 265BHP diesel motor and the BMW 740Li featuring a 340BHP petrol unit. However, the real stars of the show are the BMW M760Li xDrive model with an M performance engine that produces 609BHP, and the BMW 745Le xDrive with a hybrid unit that produces a combined output of 384BHP and a claimed average of 39.5Kmpl. These variants will cost you anywhere between `1.22 crore - `2.42 crore, which might feel quite a bit, but is certainly worth it considering the level of luxury and performance you get in return.

Mercedes has been the traditional competition for BMW for quite some time now. It even features four different models across the range; with the S350d and its 286BHP diesel unit, the S450 and its 367BHP V6 petrol, the Maybach S560 with its 469BHP V8 petrol and the Maybach S650 with its 630BHP V12 petrol respectively. All this, along with all the creature comforts you can imagine can be yours for a price range of about `1.56 - 3.09 crore.

Audi A8

Audi is another brand that has given tough competition to both BMW and Mercedes. Just like the other two manufacturers, it even comes with four different models that feature different engines; like the smaller V6 petrol unit that makes 340BHP and a V6 diesel that makes 286BHP. On the higher end, it features a twin-turbo V8 petrol unit, as well as a W12 and a plug-in hybrid. The starting price is around `1.20 crore, which is quite competitive considering the others.

OUTCLASSING THE COMPETITION Hold your head high and enjoy the wind in your face as you roar around on these modern classic beauties. By PANCHAM BHARDWAJ

A

s offerings from the superbike segment have gotten more and more angular and edgy in their design, they have begun to alienate many grown-up riders who are looking for something a bit simpler. It’s not just about the looks either, as the

32

October 2019

aggressive stance of these bikes often contributes to the discomfort that is already associated with wrangling such high-performance machines for an extended period of time. On longer routes, this discomfort can lead to pain in the wrist, ankles, back and other parts of the body. However, that doesn’t

mean that riders want to give up the performance aspect of their bikes just for more comfort. This is where a new segment of two-wheelers is making a name for itself, as it combines the power and technological advancements of modern bikes, with the laid back and nostalgia-

fhmindia fhmindia

laden design language of classic motorcycles from a bygone era. It is in this modern classic segment where most motorcycle manufacturers have begun slugging it out, with new offerings that do their best to reinvent the word cool. Here are a few of the top contenders.

fhmindia.com

Torque

HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET ROD Harley enthusiasts take the name of the Street Rod in hushed tones, lest they are accused of blasphemy. Not only does this bike feature the smallest engine on any Harley, but it also bastardises the Street 750 by converting it into a retro racer bike which has a body type that is nowhere close to the cruiser company’s iconic image. However, the motorcycle still manages to achieve the carefree yet powerful riding experience it is aiming for,

thanks to a familiar 749cc V-Twin motor that churns out 68.4BHP of power and 62Nm of torque. The six-speed gearbox tackles the power output well, and you feel comfortable at almost any speed, even though the vibrations from the body become quite noticeable despite the beefed-up suspension. For a starting price of `6.53 lakh, it is still more than enough motorcycle to live up to the Harley name.

TRIUMPH STREET TWIN When it comes to British engineering, Triumph is easily the biggest name around. In recent years, this brand has come back in a big way by merging old school design with the latest in technology. The result is a motorcycle that looks like a beautiful relic of a bygone era but packs a mean 900cc parallel-twin motor that churns out a solid 64BHP of power and 80Nm of torque. It also features a lot of modern safety and monitoring features such as

switchable traction control, a slipper clutch and even an optional tyre pressure monitoring system. This makes for a safe riding experience that is a lot more hi-tech than it looks. The only thing that does bring back memories of less advanced times is the heat that comes off the engine, which can become a bit uncomfortable on long trips and hot days. For a starting price of around `7.45 lakh, it is quite an advanced throwback to olden days.

KAWASAKI W800 STREET The W series from Kawasaki has a long heritage that goes back more than 50 years, and it honours that legacy by sticking pretty close to the original, unassuming design that made the bike popular. At the same time, in the newer avatar, the bike comes with a bigger 773cc V-Twin engine that creates up to 51BHP of power and 62.9Nm of torque. The engine features the latest fuel-injection technology, yet remains air-cooled even though most of the competition has moved

on to liquid cooling. Other than a LED headlamp cluster and LCD display, there is hardly anything else that gives off the impression of being modern, although once you push the throttle, you feel like it is an entirely new beast. Thankfully, you have the support of the massive 310 mm-270 mm front-rear discs to make sure things don’t get out of control. At a starting price of `7.99 lakh though, this will certainly be an expensive investment to get the retro feel.

ROYAL ENFIELD INTERCEPTOR 650 You can’t have a conversation about classic motorcycles in India without mentioning Royal Enfield. Even though it is one of the most prominent Indian brands, it wasn’t a contender in this category until very recently. This changed with the launch of the Interceptor 650, which brought the fight to the market with a brand new 648cc parallel-twin engine that produces a relatively decent 47BHP of power and 53Nm of torque. The

fhmindia.com

fhmindia fhmindia

rest of the bike is new as well, as the company has tried to do everything in its power to address almost every problem associated with past Enfield’s. Even though the power delivery is quite linear and the suspension feels a bit floaty at high speeds, it never seems underpowered and is quite refined; which is great since it is also one of the most affordable options, starting at just `2.5 lakh.

AN INDIAN OFFERING

The 125cc commuter segment gets its first home-grown, all-electric motorcycle. By PANCHAM BHARDWAJ

T

he concept of electric vehicles is inherently fascinating to most tech and automobile enthusiasts since they offer to combine high performance with low operational costs. This is why we get excited over the launch of every new vehicle, irrespective of the segment. However, segments do matter; since the reason electric two-wheelers aren’t dominating the industry is

Super Soco TS1200R

34

October 2019

because most offerings are limited to the low-end scooter segment. This has changed with the launch of the Revolt RV 400, India’s first electric motorcycle from a company called Revolt Intellicorp. This is the first product from the company and will compete in the highly popular 125cc commuter segment. The bike features a sporty yet bare-bones design, with an

LED headlight and digital display. The stance is aggressive, with most of the weight located in the fuel tank, which houses the battery. Since it is electric, you can control its functions via an app, which can not only start the bike, but also give you access to diagnostics, navigation, and GPS monitoring. You can also keep an eye on the amount of charge left, which at 100 per cent claims to deliver around 156kms of range. Although, the figures drop rapidly as you ramp up the speed. The power delivery is quite linear, which is a good thing considering how instant electric vehicles are with their torque. You get three riding modes to help you

ease up the learning curve, as well as limit the speed. The top speed is around 70-80kmph but the sweet spot will be between 50-60kmph if you want the full range. You can charge the bike with any conventional 15A power socket. It will take around four hours to achieve full range, or you could go with the option of battery swapping, which will be supported by an entire network of locations promised by the company. You can get all of this by paying monthly EMIs of `3,499 - `3,999 for 37 months, which includes the cost of insurance, registration and service. This is certainly a lot of money to pay in the commuter segment but is still quite cheap for an electric vehicle.

SAME IN CLASS With a similar starting price and an astonishingly similar design, this offering from Super Soco is the closest thing we can consider as competition from the international market. The bike even has a similar range of around 160km, even though the company had to lock the speed at 45kmph to achieve it. The charge time is around 6-7 hours, which is a bit longer than the Revolt.

With its scooter style 12-inch tyres and 50-65kms of range, this bike can easily be confused with a low power electric moped. However, thanks to its low weight and small size, it is also quite nimble and can achieve a top speed of around 75kmph with ease. This makes it a great option for people who require an easy to manoeuvre vehicle for inner-city travel, even though the price is closer to the longer-range Revolt.

Classical MODERNISATION Brought up in a haven of musicians, Akriti Kakar tunes vintage to her own chords of symphony. By AKANKSHA ARORA

You seem to have hit the right notes with almost every song sung by you from 2004 until today. Still, it took so much time for you to get recognition. What do you think was the reason behind it? I don’t think I ever had a benchmark that I had to cross to call myself recognised. When I entered this profession, I just wanted to sing to my heart’s content. I just wanted to work with the best people in the business and the ones that I looked up to. My journey has filled me with gratitude because I’ve got the opportunity to work with the most generous and talented people in the fraternity. So, whether it took time for me to get my recognition or not, I don’t think about that at all. I’ve not gotten type casted yet and that’s a big achievement. I believe my music is my calling card. You are often seen reviving old music tracks for your YouTube channel. Does your soul connect more with the classics or do you believe that today’s music does not have that essence? The practise of reviving old classics whether they are film tracks or folk songs, comes from a nostalgic chord in my heart. That fire also got fanned because of my audiences constantly requesting songs from that tangent. I started a series called “You choose I sing” across my social media, and I got many requests. I choose the

36

October 2019

ones close to my heart and bring them out through organically produced music and simplistic videos on my YouTube channel. The response that those tracks have got has been unreal. Every track crossed millions of views without any paid promotion. Just the power of music and word of mouth. You have sung in languages such as Hindi, Punjabi, and Bengali. How similar or different do you find the transposition in terms of accent, vibe, and rhythm? I’ve sung in Hindi, English, and many regional languages including but not limiting to Marathi, Gujarati, Sinhalese, Telugu, Punjabi, and more. It’s basically understanding the emotion in the lyrics and then focusing on the dialect. I pay special attention to getting it right. All my composers have worked very hard with me to make sure no one hearing the song ever says, “Oh this is a Punjabi girl singing in another language that she doesn’t know.” Your sisters Sukriti and Prakriti are also popular

“Insecurity only leads to destruction. Turn it into the fire in your belly that makes you work harder. ”

names in Bollywood now. They are often seen performing as a duo, but we have never witnessed the trio. Any particular reason? Is it going to happen anytime soon? My sisters and I have done numerous performances together. We keep it exclusive and don’t expose that act everywhere. To name a few, we played at the Melbourne Film Festival, Gaana Music Festival, Stree Shakti Awards, and many more. We believe in giving a competely different experience to the audience every time we play together. We have some big plans lined up that you’ll know more about in the coming months. These days, there is a new wave of talented artists in the industry in terms of music, acting, screenplay and more. Do you feel the competition coming your way? How do you manage it? As far as the competition that’s cropping up around all of us these days is concerned, I’m someone who is hopelessly optimistic, and I feel I only want to be better than my own previous performance. If I perform a song today, the next time I sing it, it has to be better than the last time. That’s my only competition. I would rather look up to all the bigger talents in our industry, who have been sitting undisplaced for so many years. There is so much to learn from them. We have got to keep supporting each other and show the way. One should turn the insecurity into the fire of the belly that makes them work harder.

If you hadn’t become a musician, what would you be doing right now? If I wasn’t a musician I don’t know what I’d really be doing. Honestly, I never really gave it a thought. Even if I didn’t crack playback singing, I was sure I’d probably be back in Delhi teaching music or something. No other profession for sure. What is the best song you’ve ever released and why? Best song? I don’t know about that. A few of them are really close to my heart and I believe that’s what matters the most. Do you think you could get any better as a musician? If so, how would you achieve that? My guruji from whom I learnt music in Delhi said that, no one is perfect when it comes to music. He says that he is still learning at the age of 75, and I was10 at that time. Clearly there’s an ocean of music out there and I’m just a drop. Any art calls for inspiration. Who is your role model and why? For me, it is my mother. She is the woman who fought to learn music and take it up as a profession, when it wasn’t looked upon as a career choice, especially in a normal middle class family. She bought her own tanpura from her scholarship money, and I use it even now. Apart from her, Lata Ji and Asha Ji have been a constant inspiration, as well as an encyclopaedia of music that I’ve heard on repeat. I have tried to emulate them, and notice the bareekiyaan in their art from the time I was five years old. They’re truly impeccable. If you could have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be? I don’t like to call them fans, I call them fam. If they have to remember anything about me, it should be what they keep telling me all the time on social media. They say my voice tells them the kind of person that I am, and how positive, real, relatable, and inspiring I am for them. They can hear it in my voice when I sing. They provide the fuel for all that I do and I am grateful for them.

ithun Chakraborty’s and Sajid Qureshi’s kids are all grown up. Namashi Chakraborty and Amrin Qureshi are stepping into the intriguing world of Bollywood and how. Before the spotlight comes on them with a full-force, brace yourselves for the stars of the upcoming film, Bad Boy, in their very first look. The two talk passionately about their craft, the meaning of success for them, and so much more. Here are some edited excerpts from the interview.

Excited, nervous, anxious; what all is going in your mind, now that your debut film, Bad Boy will be hitting the silver screen soon? NC: Firstly, I’m extremely thankful and grateful that I got my first film. Getting to work with a producer like Sajid Qureshi and a director as prolific as Rajkumar Santoshi was a dream come true. I could’ve never asked for a better debut. But, as the release date comes closer, I’ll be a bit more nervous; people are actually going to watch me on the silver screen. Anxious? No, because when you have such a great team support, there is no need to be anxious. But excited? Oh my God, yes, I’m going to have butterflies in my stomach or in my head. Maybe all over. AQ: I am super excited for everyone to see Bad Boy because we have put in our blood, sweat, and tears into this film. I am also nervous at the same time, because this is our everything and it is going to be out for the world to see in just a few months. It is definitely overwhelming, but also thrilling at the same time.

How was the experience working with the ace director, Rajkumar Santoshi? Any favourite memory you have while shooting with him that you’d like to share with us? NC: Raj Ji is the best. He blessed me the first day when we signed the film. The trust he had in me to play Raghu Verma, my character; and the way he wrote the scenes, the lines, everything was just incredible. AQ: Working with Rajkumar Santoshi Sir was truly a dream come true, because I am personally a big fan of his work. I

am really grateful and blessed to have worked with him. I don’t have a favourite memory because whenever he was around, there was never a dull moment. He is so passionate and energetic that he never fails to create magic. Being star kids, how familiar were you with films? Were you ready for the good, the bad, and the ugly that the industry brings with it? NC: Being a star kid and a famous person’s kid doesn’t really change anything. It depends on how you look at it. I come from a

very grounded family. We lived like normal people. The good, the bad, and the ugly are of course present, but I’ve already faced the bad when I was rejected and wasn’t getting any work. The ugly has yet to come, but it will come at some point. The good didn’t come, the best came, with Bad Boy. As I mentioned, I will never, ever, in my life, look back and say, ‘Was I good enough?’ It couldn’t have been better, and it’s been a once in a lifetime experience. NC: This is an interesting story. Back when I was a five-year-old lazy kid, I saw my dad in a police uniform. I ran up to my mom and asked, “Why is he dressed up as a cop?” She said, he is going to work. I was curious because at night, he had a different costume. I asked mom again, “Why does he change clothes so often?” My mom said, he is just acting. He can live as many lives in one day. I asked, “Does that make him rich?” and she said yes. So, I again asked, “Does it make him happy?” She said yes to that too, and since that day I was clear that I was going to act. AQ: Growing up, I didn’t even consider acting as a career choice, but subconsciously I always saw

myself living this life. I remember so vividly that my father and I were on a flight to Delhi and were sitting next to each other. He just looked at me and said, “I think you should try out acting,” and I feel like nothing has been the same since then. It was truly a moment that changed my life. What kind of movies do you like watching? Any particular genre on your bucket list, that you would like to take up professionally? NC: I watch films almost every day. I recently watched the movie Joker, which I loved. I’m a fan of old movies and I’ve seen all my father’s films. Moreover, I’ve seen all of Shah Rukh Khan’s and Govinda’s films too, who I am a big fan of. I also love watching old American classics. If I have a day off, I will watch classic films from Peter O’ Toole or Albert Finney with a box of pizza. I would say, that’s a perfect day for me.

AQ: I love good old rom-com films. They are light, fun to watch, harmless, and cute. But, talking on a professional stance, I think I would like to try out all the genres. Amrin, it is said that the key to a man’s heart is through his tummy. What we’d like to know is, what should a man do to impress you? For a man to impress me, I think chivalry is the key to my heart. In this digital age, how important do you think is it for actors to interact with the audience and maintain the virtual relationship? NC: I’m not a big fan of the digital aspect of promotion because I feel it’s really taxing. But, that’s the trend, and you have to go with it. There is a bit of an overdose of digital platforms and should be a little more restrained. AQ: To reach out to the audience, we as actors must strike a balance between social

media and real relationships. Some people will connect with you instantly on social media, and some will connect with you face-to-face. It is all about making the right impact. With social media, there comes appreciation, but criticism is also a major part of stardom. What’s your take on internet trolls? NC: To be honest, I’m not a star yet. I have been liked by a lot of people on Instagram and Twitter, and some people have abused me, and that’s alright. It’s a part and parcel of life, and they are just jealous. When you abuse someone you don’t know, it’s coming from frustration. It’s not a positive space to be in, and you should not give any importance to trolls. AQ: Definitely, with the good comes the bad, and with appreciation, I know that hatred is going to come our way. Internet trolls exist and they have always been there. It is something that I have realised that we can not change or control. But, we can control how we face it. Sometimes it may be hard to not take everything seriously, especially when you are bombarded with so much hatred. But, I think at such times, it is best to find comfort in people that are there for you.

Other than your fathers, Mithun Chakraborty and Sajid Qureshi, who do you look up to, and why? NC: Other than my dad, I look up to my brother, Mahaakshay Chakraborty, also known as Mimoh. I think he is a wonderful actor and an extremely patient person. As an actor, he is really underrated and deserves another shot. AQ: I don’t think there is any person who I look up to more than my father for inspiration because his morals, values, ethics, and work are so commendable. He is the most hardworking man in my life, and he really sets a commendable example for me to follow. The festive season is in full swing. What is your idea of a celebration? Do you go all out, or prefer keeping things simple? NC: Firstly, Diwali aa rahi hai. Pataka wataka phodo mat. Pollution pehle hi bahut hai. Have a nice peaceful Diwali with your family and

friends. For me, celebrations are perfect when you have your family around and some really good food, of course. AQ: I like to keep things simple and celebrate it with my loved ones, and lots of good food. 2019 is going to bid us goodbye shortly. Anything new and exhilarating on your plate that you’re looking forward to before the year ends? NC: 2019 has been the year when I got my first film. That’s the highlight of the year, and I’m never going to forget it. I am also looking forward to a great 2020 because my film, Bad Boy releases next year, and I hope the New Year is lucky for all of us. AQ: I am really excited for my October cover in FHM magazine for starters. Also, I am really looking forward to promoting my film, Bad Boy, and eagerly waiting for what 2020 has in store for me.

If you weren’t in the film industry, what profession would you have selected for yourself? NC: I would still be in the film industry. If not an actor; I would write, direct or produce. I like the magic of movie-making. AQ: If not for the film industry, I think I would have been a businesswoman.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, MEXICO

If you fancy spooky themes and gothic backgrounds, then Dia De Los Muertos aka The Day Of Dead is just perfect for you. Celebrated in the month of November, this festival is a deep-rooted tradition in Mexican culture. The main purpose of this fiesta is to honour the deceased, but its iconic symbolism and colourful commemoration practices have taken a life of its own. Every year in Mexico, people paint their faces with detailed yet stylised skulls, as well as make altars in their home. People decorate the central plaza with artworks, and a grand colourful parade runs along the capital’s main Reforma Avenue to hail the Dia De Los Muertos. The locals believe that through this festival, they forge a connection between the present and the afterlife with both sombre and celebratory activities.

LOI KRATHONG AND YI PENG, THAILAND

Several lanterns floating in the sky lighten up the entire area and weave magic in the atmosphere. On every12th full moon of the year, the magnificent beauty of this light celebration is witnessed throughout Thailand in the month of November, known as Loi Krathong and Yi Peng. Thai people honour the start of a new season and the end of monsoon by setting Krathongs down the river and releasing the paper lanterns up into the sky. It symbolises the blessings for a good harvest and great fortune in the new year. The whole experience is so magnificent in itself that it will make you feel like you are floating in the identical vista of the cosmos.

RANN UTSAV-KUTCH FESTIVAL, GUJARAT

The thing that makes the white desert in Gujarat stand out is the monumental Rann Utsav, which is synonymous to the festival of souls, a gala of music and warmth, as well as vibrant and eminent Gujarati traditions. Every year in the month of November, Rann Utsav welcomes thousands of visitors from across the world. The festival provides you with a multifaceted experience. You can satiate your taste buds by relishing the authentic Gujarati flavours, sway to the tunes of mesmerising folk music, and bear witness to the beautiful landscape of the glimmering desert. The zest for gaiety and oneness will leave you overwhelmed as this celebration binds multiple generations together; be it families, friends, couples or even those travellers who enjoy solo sojourns.

HORNBILL FESTIVAL, NAGALAND

One of the biggest cultural extravaganzas of North East India is the Hornbill Festival of Nagaland. It is a week-long event held every year in the month of December. This is the time of the year to revive, sustain, protect, and promote the rich heritage and traditions of the Nagas. In the starting phase of the celebration, you will witness all the tribes of Nagas come together in one place. A vivid display of cultural dance, indigenous sports, and folk songs are the key highlights of the festival. Further, you will find remarkable warrior log drums, eccentric headgears, soulful war cries, and exquisite costumes that are special in their own way. However, the excitement does not stop here as the visitors also get to taste the delectable local cuisines served with their finest rice beer.

BONDING OVER BEER The idea of creating a unique brand was ingrained quite early in Prabhtej Singh Bhatia. Later, a spirit that will resonate with everyone in an instant was born, with a roar. By MRINALINI SINGH

Founder and CEO of India’s first home-grown, family-run craft beer, Simba Brewery, tell us about the idea behind the brand. I was surprised to see such an enormous beer market that offered different styles and variants of beer when I was studying in the UK. It thrilled me to explore all the different variants. I felt that the culture was highly missing in India, which instantly fuelled my interest and gave birth to Simba in my head. Back home, the only difference between the beers were the labels. Since every beer was providing the same style and similar quality, beer consumption by people was reasonably low because they weren’t trying anything new; that acted as a foot-in-the-door moment for us. Even before I decided to start a brewery, I had my heart set on the name Simba. I loved the name already, and it fits perfectly with the image we wanted to create for our brand – authentic and something the millennials could resonate with. What obstacles did you have to overcome in order to make your dream brand come into existence? We face challenges every single day. India is a difficult country when it comes to alcohol because of the regulations. One of the biggest challenges was that we had about 20 products we felt would be great for the Indian market but choosing between which ones to launch was challenging. So, rather than launching 10 products that are good we instead decided to launch two brilliant products. Initially making that choice was extremely tough. The bigger companies had a lot of distribution control and that acted as another

roadblock for us. We actually had to work really hard in breaking that and reaching the consumer with a product that was missing in their lives. Beer consumption has been declining in India in the last decade. Do you consider the beer market is under threat from other drinks, for instance, wine? I completely disagree. I don’t feel the beer market is facing a downfall. Globally, yes, it is declining, however, in India, the beer market is ramping upwards. Even if there were a few dips here and there, overall the market has grown phenomenally in the last seven to eight years. Also, a couple of dips witnessed in a few quarters were beyond the control of the industry. They were either due to the highway ban or demonetisation, but definitely not due to lack of consumer demand. The beer market is not at all under any kind of threat from wine or any other poison. I think India is still a very nascent market. Globally, 70 per cent of the alcohol consumed is in the form of beer, but in India, that’s still 30 to 35 per cent, so there’s a long road ahead for us. Home-brewing alcohol for commercial purposes is illegal in India. What is your take on this matter and how do you wish to change it in the future? Yes, home-brewing is illegal in India, but I am completely against that. It should become legal, and when I converse with any of the higher authorities, I make sure

Zoook products worth upto `5,000/Personally signed FHM merchandise by your favourite celebrity.

that I communicate my sentiments to them. Having said that, I am not encouraging commercial production going on in the name of home-brewing, but a litre of beer for consumption-purposes has never harmed anyone. People have become extremely creative and I believe in encouraging that. Just like people who enjoy making home-made dishes, cakes etc., there are other people who love brewing home-made beer and it’s very personal to them. We, as a country, should encourage and support that; it’s about respecting someone’s freedom and not curtailing it. It doesn’t just help the brewing industry but the nation as well. So, if cooking or baking at home is not illegal, or making your own clothes or shoes is not illegal, then why should homebrewing be? Is there really much of a difference between a premium and non-premium beer? Or is it just marketing? World of a difference.

Marketing is only a tool that helps brands with their positioning but that can never let a non-premium beer overpower a good premium beer. What advice would you like to give to entrepreneurs who are new in the beer brewing industry? The advice I’d like to give new entrepreneurs is very simple, ‘Just Start’, nothing else. Wherever you are and whatever it is, if you are passionate about your product, it’ll work out. If not, at least you won’t regret not trying. Call up people for help and never shy away from asking questions, and learning from other people’s experience. Even if you get five responses, you have a very good start. Finally, what’s your favourite beer, and, if you don’t drink beer, what’s your choice of poison? I love Simba Stout hands down. But outside of that, I love BrewDog. I think it’s a mindblowing beer that has changed my perception about beer big time. At other times, I prefer sipping my favourite Silver Moon green tea.

Tell us about your journey. How has your father, the celebrated gastronome and food columnist, Jiggs Kalra, inspired you? Hailing from a family of food aficionados, food was always the centre of all dining table conversations and anecdotes while growing up. It always had me intrigued, and thus began my initiation into the world of food from a very young age. While growing up, my father had been consulting wth some of the biggest hospitality brands globally. I had the opportunity to experience some of the leading hotels and restaurants across the world. I saw him create such wonderful concepts and that’s what fascinated me to pursue this industry. While I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, the love for hospitality and an affinity towards Indian cuisine was the only natural progression for my own entrepreneurial venture.

You have introduced molecular gastronomy in Indian food. Do you travel extensively to learn more about such concepts? The concept of molecular gastronomy has been received quite well by guests across different demographics and age groups within India. We witnessed an explosion of restaurants adapting and showcasing the use of molecular gastronomy in various forms across the country last year. This has confirmed our belief in the concept of pushing the envelope in culinary innovation and being at par with international trends and experiences. Having said that, while the diners find the concept fascinating, there is still a lot to explore and a long way to go before they become aware about the nuances of the process. At TYGR and KODE, we have extensively used a combination of modern presentation styles as well as modern cooking equipment like the Freeze Dryer and Josper Grill. The techniques work best with Thai, American, and Mediterrean cuisines, while retaining their traditional essence, which has been well received by our patrons. Aspects of molecular gastronomy, if used correctly and in moderation, truly adds value and an element of surprise to the dining experience. By employing modern culinary techniques, latest technologies, laboratory style equipment, and cutting-edge styles of presentation, the progressive cuisine at our restaurants aims to showcase food from around the world in a truly contemporary manner. In a country that heavily relies on the traditional forms of cooking, you have launched a lot of fusion food. What challenges have you faced there? We like to call ourselves a ‘progressive cuisine’ company. Progressive food is highly creative, not limited by geography, and imbibes the best of multiple cultures. I feel it is the present as well as the future. I am not saying traditional meals are going anywhere— we just like to be cuisine agnostic. Even Indian fare has global influences, but is still authentic in flavour. For foreign cuisines, we pay homage to the original recipe, but also play around with the ingredients and do something creative. I feel

that is important. “How long can you keep on eating the same food? Why not innovate a bit, but without losing the essence?” It is only human nature to push the envelope. It is vital to educate people about the difference between progressive cuisine and fusion cooking. The future of any cuisine is that of progression; staying true to its roots, while using contemporary techniques to present a whole new dimension, which we at Massive Restaurants refer to as version 2.0.

outside the confines of five star hotels or standalones, this trend is likely to gain traction. Indians are travelling all over the world and their palate has become quite refined. They want some of that food back in India. If you enjoy a good risotto, why should you have to go to Italy? I’d say the days of going to just Indian or Chinese restaurants are gone. People want to be surprised. They like innovation and are rewarding it in a big way. So, a lot of restaurateurs are taking risks that

“Hailing from a family of food aficionados, food was always the centre of all dining table conversations.”

Since you started your company in 2012, how have you seen the Indian palate evolve? Today, diners are looking for exceptional experiences not just at a premium restaurant but also in the confines and comfort of their own homes as well. Thus, a concept such as gourmet food delivery has emerged. The components of most gourmet dishes are complex and are presented with innovative plating so as to increase its aesthetic appeal. But actors such as Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh inspired me to keep on learning more about the field.

I delve deep into its psyche and bring out small details to make the performance more rewarding.

did this phase come to be? Social media kind of just happened for me. The audience has been very supportive and kind all through.

“I am not looking for the perfect man. Rather I seek an ethical, loyal and honest man who isn't afraid to be his true self.” his sister’s wedding reception. I met his mother there and when she saw me, she told me that I was prettier than his girlfriend. That was extremely awkward for me. I remember the awkward silence that followed after it. If a genie granted you 3 wishes right now, what would you wish for and why? 1) World peace and a better ecosystem 2) A trip to the moon 3) An opportunity to work alongside Shahrukh Khan What’s meant to be will always find a way to meet you. What qualities do you look for in your perfect man? I don’t want a perfect man, rather a man who is comfortable being his true self and shows his flaws and scars to the world. A true and ethical man who is kind, loving and honest, is what I seek.

It is said “fitness is like a relationship, it won’t work if you cheat.” How do you manage your fitness regimen despite your busy schedule? I follow different activities to stay fit such as kickboxing, dancing and cardio. I can dance for hours on end and stay upbeat. I am also a foodie and prefer eating home cooked meals. When Karishma unwinds, what does she indulge in? Whenever I return back home after a long day, I always have my little puppy Charlie, waiting for me. Just by spending time with him, I can often feel a sense of calm. I also occasionally watch comedy shows or movies on Netflix whenever I am in the mood for it. I also go out with my girlfriends for a girls night out, which is always fun. When I want to unwind for a couple of days straight, I go back to my hometown and spend quality time with my mother. dream celebrities and vice-versa. But how do you deal with Internet trolls? We often forget that the most important things in life are love and respect. Just by hiding behind a digital platform people more often than not, take undue advantage of someone by mistreating them publicly. I used to get affected by them initially, but now when I think about it, I’ve come to the conclusion that, whoever is trolling me don’t know my journey and I should not let their comments harm my mental peace. Tell us something about your future projects? I am currently working on a web series called Fixerr, and a music video with Tony Kakkar called Kanta Bai. I am also pursuing a web series with Rannvijay Singh called Sumer Singh Diaries, and also a film that I am not suppose to disclose the details about, yet. I am extremely thankful for all the love and appreciation that I have received in my professional journey. How was your experience of shooting with FHM India? It was such a lovely experience; I loved all the looks and the team is so much fun. I have worked with the photographer, Amit Khanna before as well, and it’s always a joy to work with such an engaging team.

TAKING THE

PLUNGE Six gold and three silver medals at the Indian National Games, one Olympic trip and now preparing for his next. Without a doubt, Sajan Prakash is one of the best swimmers in India.

By MRINALINI SINGH

Tell us a little about your life and your first tryst with swimming. I was born in Thodupuzha, Kerala, but I was brought up in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu as my mother accepted a job there. She was also an athlete and thus brought me up in a sporting lifestyle. I participated in many games and at last, my interest took me to the swimming pool. â—? When did you start taking swimming seriously, and who played an important role in helping you realise your potential? I started taking swimming seriously when I was 14 and it was my mom who took efforts for me to reach this level. Moreover, my coaches Joy Joseph Thoppan and Saji Sebastian identified my potential and coached me till the age of 17. After that, I moved to Bangalore to train under the top coach of the country, S. where my life completely changed from average to amazing. Currently, I’m on a scholarship from FINA to train in Phuket under Miguel Lopez. I consider myself really lucky. The first Indian swimmer in 32 years to qualify for the 200m butterfly final at the Asian Games. How does it feel to create history? It feels good to comprehend what all I have achieved, and that I have helped give a platform to many other upcoming athletes. However, it is imperative for us to realise why we took so many years to catch up with the world, and accordingly find insights on how we got lost in the middle, and fix it immediately. How would you sum up the whole Olympic experience in Rio? Was it everything that you had imagined? The reality only hit me once I entered the athlete’s village, where I saw top-class players from different sports, from all over the world. It felt awesome to be a part of that, and to learn from them. Is there anything that happens behind the scenes that you think most people do not know about the Olympics? It is where you meet the world’s best of the best, and it felt great. I ate my meals with Micheal Phelps and many other athletes, and we eventually spoke and shared our thoughts on the sport. In India, many people aren’t well-versed with swimming, and it is indeed a rare sport. Tell us a little about the challenges you faced in your career. As Indians, we need to build awareness about this sport and the culture it involves. We further need multiple coaches and instructors to take up swimming coaching professionally, and be knowledgeable about how well this sport operates. When you have an “off” day and motivation seems to elude you, how do you push through it? Usually, when I rest, I take things easy and focus on my well being. It is not only about what you

Relaxing for your next hectic training session will definitely help you build up for the next level. Walk us through your typical day. How often do you practice? I do about 10 swimming sessions and four weights and dryland sessions per week. In an off session on a Sunday, I enjoy sleeping or watching a movie. The trend is such that most swimmers retire by the time they are 30, and take up coaching and/or diverse roles. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? I see a good five years of swimming until the next Olympics. But many aren’t able to do that, since we do not have a system or option for jobs to support the athlete financially if he/she wants to continue the sport. I find myself lucky as a swimmer, because the police department in Kerala is supporting me in all ways to

achieve more. However, it is definitely a myth that if you’re 30 you cannot be a swimmer anymore and you have to retire. What advice would you give to amateurs who want to be able to swim at the level you do? It’s simple; believe in yourself, come out of your comfort zone, make use of the opportunity, and do not stop or step back when you feel it’s painful. Just push through the pain. I still remember what my coach said during the transformation period of my career; “Attack

every day with an enthusiasm, which is unknown to mankind.” The thought has stuck with me for long and will be a part of my life forever.

bonafide daredevil, Aishwarya Pissay is a well-known name in the world of motorsports. With four national championships under her belt, her claim to fame was when she participated in a World Cup and came first. Truly, representing your country on an international level is an ecstatic feeling, and then winning the title is the cherry on the cake. Since there aren’t many women in the field of bike racing, we talked to Aishwarya to understand what kept her motivated during her journey and how she prepared herself for the obstacles henceforth. Here are the edited excerpts from the interview.

Tell us a little bit about your upbringing, what was 8-year-old Aishwarya like? I come from a conservative family where doing anything apart from a nine-to-five job is a taboo. However, I had different dreams, and the eight-year-old me was adventurous; always outdoors, seeking new opportunities to learn. Moreover, as a kid, I wanted to become a pilot. What was it about getting on a bike that made you consider it as a career option? How did you get into competitive racing? I started riding motorcycles as a passion. It gave me a sense of freedom and I felt alive every time I was on a bike. Over a period when I had travelled a bit on motorcycles, I started training at Apex Racing Academy for circuit racing after which I started racing and won a couple of championships. Thanks to my performance in 2017, TVS Racing signed me on as a factory racer, which helped me pursue racing professionally. Motorsports has typically been male-dominated, do you see that changing now, and how so? Motorsports has always been considered a maledominated sport due to the lack of participation of women. It has evolved from the time I started participating in the sport; from being one woman on an all-men grid, to having an all-women grid

“My ultimate goal is to be at Dakar, it is the most gruelling race every rally athlete dreams of participating in.” now, the situation has improved for good. You are the first Indian woman to have won six national road racing and rally championship titles. What is next on your radar? I feel extremely happy to bear the Indian flag on international platforms, and be the first Indian athlete to have won a World Championship. My ultimate dream is to be at Dakar, It is one of its kind and the most gruelling race every rally racing athlete dreams of participating in. How do you prepare yourself for racing? I have a training regimen that I follow which includes three days of a week at the gym, where we work on physical strength along with mental conditioning. Over the weekend, I spend time training on a motorcycle, and equipping myself physically. You have suffered severe injuries during your tenure

as a professional racer. Were you ever afraid that it could hamper the pursuit of your passion? Being a motorcycle racing athlete is a way of life for me, which means a never give up attitude no matter what the situation or injury. Every time I have been injured, my team and I have always looked at how we would work on recovery, and moving towards the next goal. Tell us about your greatest achievement and your biggest regret in your career thus far. There are no regrets about anything. The biggest achievement is the FIM Baja Rally World Championship, wherein I was placed first in

Women’s, and second in the Juniors category. Since you’re a petrolhead, what advice would you like to give to amateur racers who wish to walk on your footsteps? I would like to say that along the way of following your dreams, do not let the naysayers stop you from achieving your dreams and goals. Also, safety first, please use the right safety gear, and never forget to strap your helmet. What’s next for you as far as the sport is concerned? I am training for my upcoming national and international championships next year before I go to Dakar in 2021.

hat do women want?” Men are always unable to answer this age-old question, and during the festive season when it comes to buying her something; unfortunately, they fail spectacularly yet again. Surprisingly or not, men also wish to get their mothers the ideal present to thank them for everything she has done. They also feel like overawing their sibling with a gift that proclaims her sisterhood, and the love between the two; and of course, pampering their lady love tops this list. But the struggle starts and ends at the same point, as for them, gifting something to their women is synonymous to anxiety and tension. In order to answer this persistent question, we have curated a list of few exceptional gifts that she will adore, and will not stop praising you for a lifetime.

FOR THE SUPPORTIVE ONE Give a clear indication to your mom, sister, girlfriend, or best friend that she is truly your strength with an elegant neckpiece. The pretty little piece can be either crafted with a special gemstone, or can even be customised by getting their names engraved on the same. Such a unique gift will undoubtedly make them realise that they are truly your backbone. Make sure that she likes accessorising and will adorn it with grace. FOR THE WORKAHOLIC There is perhaps no better gift than a neck support that you can give to someone who is constantly busy with her work, and travelling across the globe because of it. A neck pillowcase is not only comfortable, but it will also protect the sleeper’s skin from creasing due to excess stress. Also, for someone who does not take care of herself, in the long run, the pillowcase will

“With the potential to inspire creativity all year long, a journal is the perfect present for someone who loves to read and write.” help in preventing split ends and broken hair. So, why not add to her beauty with this relaxing gift. FOR THE READING AND WRITING LOVER With the potential to inspire creativity all year long, a journal is the perfect present for someone who loves to read, and jot down her thoughts on a piece of paper. Be thoughtful and pick a diary with lots of pages, so that it does not fall short when writing any thought, artwork, idea, or adventure story that pops in her mind. This will make her feel that you value her thoughts. Add a bit more to this gift by writing a heartwarming personal note, or maybe adding a hand-made bookmark. FOR THE FITNESS FANATIC If the significant lady in your life is a fitness enthusiast, then there’s no better gift than an annual membership to a gym or any other fitness programme she would love to be associated with. Treat her athletic side with a membership card so that she can burn the extra calories she might have gained during the festive season. This will help her get back in shape, and enjoy herself at the same time. Not just this, you may also present her a pair of flattering leggings. A comfortable pair of joggers

which are sweat-wicking, quick-drying, and of the perfect fit. FOR THE AVID TRAVELLER Whether or not the woman you are shopping for has any holiday travels planned, the passport is one of the most important document, which should always be in safe hands. You certainly do not want her to lose it while on a vacation, so how about a customised passport cover? It will keep her passport safe and will work just like a book jacket by protecting it from wear and tear. Another point which will help you filter the options is the appearance. If the important woman in your life is a little careless, then vibrant colours will help her locate it easily amongst all the luggage she will carry. Otherwise, a diary look cover is a classic option. FOR THE FRAGRANCE LOVER Giving the gift of scent is a truly personal affair. After all, every time she sprinkles it on herself she will certainly

remember the one who gave it. This season, gift the special woman in your life a fragrance of your choice that matches her personality. This will give her an idea of what you think about her. Furthermore, diffusers have been long loved by women of all ages. If your woman is someone who loves to fill the home with fresh aromas, a gift crafted with small additions like flowers embedded into the wax is perfect. FOR THE ACTIVE LISTENER Diamonds are a woman’s best friend, right? We say, wrong. This time, think beyond diamonds and buy your special lady something that will be her true companion through good times and bad. We are referring to a portable speaker, along with pre-loaded songs from different genres. Music is an emotion, a memory, and so much more. An assortment of various melodies will help her unwind after a tiring day, or dance to the tunes on a party night. Being portable and multipurpose, such a gifting option might even become her partner in crime, you never know.

For us fashion-forward folks, fall is an opportunity to step up our style game in more ways than one. We have all your needs covered, to sport this season like a pro. By CHITMAN KANWAR AHUJA

T

he season of fall is upon us, which also means that we can finally wear the clothes that have been stacked up in our wardrobe for months. But, with fall also comes the season of fashion weeks, where we get a glimpse at what men would be wearing next fall. With all that and more, we have a few ideas as to what to expect this season. Utility gear, luxurious outerwear, and strange pants are just a few of our style predictions; but who better than the masters of mens’ fashion themselves to decode their thoughts on the best style statements to ace like a pro. In the world of womenswear, animal prints don’t exactly qualify as breaking news. But for men, a tiger-striped coat or leopard button-down still feels like a risk. We’ve seen a few daring men such as the likes of Ranveer Singh, wear leopard and zebra motifs on the street, but thanks to the animal prints on major runways, we have a feeling they’ll catch on in a bigger way this season. But what impact do colours, prints, and unique elements have on ones dressing? “From classic grey, black, and blue suits, to rendering eccentric and unconventional designs in a rich profusion of colours, is what our collection entails. They bring out the best in a man, be it an old school soul or one who is vividly flamboyant. Colours help in breaking the monotonous fashion sense, and lets them feel like a new man. The style and look one

carries says a lot about a person; somebody who is more outgoing and jazzy would usually go for bright colour options, rather than the muted tones carried by people who like to be in their comfort zone. There are so many elements that designers are incorporating in their collection that evokes the young spirit of our modern generation. In fact, in our designs you may find a fruit printed shirt, embroidered

patterns, or numbers, to hand painted animal motifs on ties and accessories. Adapting these trends is all about feeling good and boasting of your idiosyncratic interest,” shares Saggar Mehra, Managing Director, House of Sunil Mehra. While menswear evolves much slower trend wise than womenswear, fashion designer and the king of kitsch, Manish Arora says, now is an exciting time for men to build and transform their wardrobes. As he puts it,

more men are becoming experimental on how they choose to dress themselves, thanks to a plethora of options recommended by their friends, social media, and the Internet. This creates a variety of large and small changes every season. Gender fluid clothes are the biggest trend this year and he thinks the trend will last in the coming years as well. Being yourself, while standing out in crowd, and not being shy of what and how you want to represent yourself is the new trend he supports the most. He further adds, “My work is all about colour and I have tried to create an impact as deep as possible with my collaboration with Koovs. The range has been inspired by Tuzki, a Chinese emoticon, a special rabbit that had been customised to represent my personal lifestyle. Subtly embedded within the collection are elements of the rainbow signifying a celebration of the idea of ‘Life is Beautiful’ and ‘Love is love’. Through this collaboration, we aim to spread messages of love, happiness, and hope for a brighter future.” For those who pay attention to what’s in style and what they can adapt into their own ethos, designer Gaurav Khanijo, recommends looking at what’s happening in the larger picture and figuring out how to pair it into your everyday life. “Every man should have a well cut suit whether its black or blue; it should be sharp, and of their perfect size. For Indian men, a black bandhgala is like an asset, to invest in. For summers, keep some linen suits. They go a long way in your life. Footwear sure makes or breaks your look; its again important to have good pairs that are there to stay, in both comfort and design. Today we all have so much knowledge of what’s happening around us that we have grown out of our conservative side. It’s the same with our clothes; our ideas and our individual identities are helping fashion grow in this country.”
