“I SAID TO THE

I thought I knew all about Kleinfeld from years of watching TLC’s popular series Say Yes to the Dress. That is, until I got engaged and booked an appointment at the iconic bridal boutique, becoming one of the 19,000 brides a year who pass through its doors. Not only did I find the dress, but I also discovered so much about the magic happening behind the scenes. For instance, there’s a back room the cameras don’t capture where hundreds of gowns hang from a giant conveyor belt on the ceiling. One thing that didn’t surprise me: Randy Fenoli is as amazing as he appears on TV — and his advice is pure gold. No Kid Hungry, which works to ensure that every child in the U.S. has access to healthy food, is the latest charitable organization to earn the Good Housekeeping Humanitarian Seal. And since we stand behind it, you can feel confident supporting it. It’s a sobering statistic: One in seven children in the United States doesn’t have access to enough food to thrive in his or her daily life. Enter No Kid Hungry, a campaign launched by the nonprofit Share Our Strength that’s aimed at ending child hunger in America by making sure kids get three healthy meals a day. Why children go hungry The problem isn’t a lack of food in the country; it’s the fact that some kids lack access to food. In many cases, children get smaller portions than they need or their parents aren’t able to afford nutritious foods. How No Kid Hungry helps The charity partners with local organizations like schools, community centers and corporations to provide school breakfasts, after-school meals and summer meals to kids who would otherwise go

without food. If a school needs certain resources to get food to kids, No Kid Hungry can assist with that as well. Sometimes all a school needs is a cart to carry meals down its hallways. Incredible impact “We see the difference we’re making,” says Serena Williams, chief people officer at No Kid Hungry. The organization has raised more than $700 million and connected kids with more than 1 billion meals since its 2010 launch. How you can join the fight Even a little donation goes a long way: $1 can bring up to 10 meals. You can even support No Kid Hungry while shopping online — when you place orders on smile.amazon.com and choose No Kid Hungry as your charity, a small percentage of your purchase price goes to it. Win-win!

how charities earn the GH Humanitarian Seal Our experts at the GH Institute rigorously evaluate charities to confirm that they are delivering on their missions and that they manage your donations responsibly. Here’s what we review:

1

Transparency

We look at financial health, accountability, upholding of legal rights and governance.

2

Integrity

Our evaluations include detailed reference checks and assessments of the integrity of a charity’s organizational structure and administrative elements.

3

Alignment

A few weeks ago, I drove from my home outside New York City to the outskirts of Washington, DC, all the while internally debating going away on a Saturday — one of the few days when I have uninterrupted family time and can get things done around the house. I was actually excited about this trip to catch up with a good friend. But my practical side questioned driving four whole hours for, essentially, a dinner party. Ultimately, when I arrived, it felt like a seasonal hug. My friend Julie’s home is always so warm and inviting, and I’m often pleasantly surprised to see her creative decor ideas and eats right from the pages of the most recent Good Housekeeping! The dinner was delicious — and the company was even better. I’m so glad I went! As Julie sent me on my way with an unbelievably scrumptious healthy homemade Mmmorning Muffin (right), I realized how much I’d needed that short escape to rejuvenate. As star Chrissy Metz shares on page 53, sometimes you need to keep the “self” in “self-care” and do something that’s really, truly all about you! And no need to hop in the car and take a road trip, because tons of ideas on how to inspire or indulge yourself this year are packed into this issue. Here’s hoping you’re good and ready t the best 2020 ever!

Can eating sugar age your skin?

APRIL FRANZINO BEAUTY DIRECTOR

— KATIE L .

april says: Yes, it can. Research shows that too much sugar in your diet can accelerate skin aging due to a process called glycation. “Glycation happens when excess sugar speeds up the breakdown of collagen and elastin, which keep skin firm,” explains Whitney Bowe, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. “When these fibers in skin connect with sugars, they become weak and less supple, resulting in wrinkles, sagging and a loss of radiance.” The best way to mitigate the skin-aging effects of glycation is to limit your sugar intake, says Marnie Nussbaum, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. Start by nixing sweet beverages like soda and juice (top sources of sugar in the U.S. diet), suggests GH’s Nutrition Lab, aiming for no more than 24 grams (6 tsp) per day.

CICA SKIN HEALING Tigers are said to rub their wounds in the Asian herb centella asiatica (a.k.a. “cica” or gotu kola) to help them heal — hence its nickname, tiger grass. Now skincare brands are using cica in products like moisturizers to restore skin compromised by sensitivity or redness. LAB LOWDOWN “Cica has been shown to fight free radicals, regulate collagen synthesis and prevent damage from environmental stressors, thanks to antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties,” says Ava Shamban, M.D., a dermatologist in Los Angeles. “It’s well tolerated by even sensitive skin.” For best results, opt for a formula like a serum or moisturizer that’s left on skin (rather than rinsed off), advises GH Beauty Lab director Birnur Aral, Ph.D. — Reporting by Paige Stables GH BEAUTY LAB PICK: NO7 LABORATORIES CICA-RESCUE SKIN PASTE, $23, WALGREENS

The Science of LIP CARE Your lips can lose plumpness, appear thinner and develop lines with age. Here’s why — and how to kiss up to a more youthful mouth

Tried + Tested BEST LIP ENHANCERS

ANTI-WRINKLE BALM

In a Beauty Lab test, this treatment lip balm was the best at reducing testers’ lip lines in four weeks, thanks to line-filling hyaluronic acid and nourishing jojoba and grape-seed oils. FRESH SUGAR LIP TREATMENT ADVANCED THERAPY, $26, SEPHORA

FULLNESS BOOSTER

“Lips get their shape in part from collagen, and as we age, we produce less of it,” explains Gretchen Frieling, M.D., a dermatopathologist in Boston. “UV damage, genetics and lifestyle factors such as smoking can also be culprits.” (To prevent sun damage, apply a lip balm with a broadspectrum SPF of 30 or higher daily, especially when outdoors.)

How can I make my lips look youthful and feel their best? Just as you do for your face, exfoliating, which removes the outer layer of dry, dead skin to promote cell turnover, can help your lips instantly look and feel

32

G H JA N / F E B 2 0 2 0

smoother and plumper. Buff lips daily with a clean toothbrush, a damp cloth or a lip scrub to remove flakes and boost circulation. Finish by coating them in a thick layer of a hydrating lip balm, serum or cream with anti-aging benefits (see the GH Beauty Lab’s picks at right) to lock in moisture plus fill lines and boost fullness with treatment ingredients. “Look for hyaluronic acid, peptides and fatty acids like ceramides,” Dr. Frieling advises.

Any makeup tricks? Many lip-plumping products are made with ingredients that temporarily swell lips and can irritate. Instead, the GH Beauty Lab recommends lipcolor formulas, like the pick at right, that moisturize to even out

fine lines and minimize their appearance. A dab of highlighter on your Cupid’s bow or on the center of lips over lipcolor will also catch light to create a pillowy effect.

VENEFFECT ANTI-AGING LIP TREATMENT, $85, VENEFFECT.COM

What about in-office procedures? For immediate results, a dermatologist can inject fillers of hyaluronic acid (a substance that occurs naturally in the body), such as Restylane or Juvéderm, to help restore structure and shape as well as fullness, Dr. Frieling says. (The cost: $500 or more, depending on location; results last about six months to one year.) Resurfacing lasers, which stimulate collagen formation, can also help diminish lines around lips.

PLUMPING LIPCOLOR

The balmy, hydrating texture and slight sheen of this lip crayon, made with plant butters, help soften the look of lip wrinkles. Use the tip to line lips first to fake fullness. GH SEAL STAR NEUTROGENA MOISTURESMOOTH COLOR STICK, $6, DRUGSTORES

So what causes signs of lip aging?

This peptide and antioxidant treatment is like an anti-aging cream for lips: In the Beauty Lab’s test, users reported noticeable lip plumping after four weeks of use. Worth the splurge!

Built for speed, the BaBylissPro tool dried hair fastest of all those tested. Expert Note “It is elegant-looking, not too loud yet powerful, and it works wonderfully!” an evaluator marveled. Lab Lowdown In calculations of drying time of standardized prewashed hair samples, it earned a perfect score, outperforming every other hairdryer tested. It also got high marks for strong airflow and easy-to-use buttons and attachments.

With a dial that lets you customize the heat level, InStyler also had the most powerful airflow of the test winners. Expert Notes Two “loved” this, and it was “easy to hold and change settings.” Lab Lowdown The powerful airflow translated to fast drying speed, and it came out on top for being comfortable to grip and having easy-to-navigate buttons. Decided on a new one? Here’s how to dispose of your old blowdryer.

If a beauty appliance like a blowdryer you no longer use still works, first try donating it to a shelter, Goodwill, the Salvation Army or a similar organization, says GH Sustainability Director Birnur Aral. Not in working order? Hairdryers, flat irons and curling irons fall under electronics, so if your municipality doesn’t have clear recycling rules for them, call the manufacturer to see if it will take back your old or broken product or visit earth911.com to locate a facility or retailer that will accept it. It’s well worth the effort, considering that electronic waste is one of the most polluting types. #RaiseTheGreenBar

Cricket’s model emitted the highest heat to quickly dry even dense or coarse hair. Expert Note “Cute and compact, yet powerful and well made,” one said. “It’s also light [1.5 pounds] and nice to hold.” Lab Lowdown At 150°F, it had the highest air temperature of the top dryers, making it a good option for thick hair. It also rated high for all-around simplicity.

No fear of arm fatigue when drying with featherlight Formawell Beauty, also the least expensive of the test winners. Expert Notes They liked that the tool wasn’t bulky. “The perfect at-home hairdryer,” one reported. “The heat and the airflow are strong, but it’s still compact.” Lab Lowdown Analysis found it quiet and the lightest of the winners at 1.3 pounds. It dried hair samples quickly, and the attachments were easy to maneuver. A caveat: The short cord could be difficult to use.

INSIGHTS •Each of the top-tested blowdryers has a cold-shot button, which helps set your hairstyle, and a nozzle attachment that can be used to concentrate airflow. •Almost every one of the hairdryers evaluated claimed emission of negative ions or far-infrared radiation for smoothing benefits through an ion generator or ceramic or ceramictourmaline materials. While there is general research on these technologies, little data is available on their benefits in the context of hairdryer design.

STEP 1: Clean & Sand Remove shelves, drawers, doors and any hardware, then dust and wipe with a multi-surface cleaner. Use a fine-grit sanding block to remove the previous finish. We found this desk for $150 at AptDeco.

STEP 2: prime & PAINT Paint a layer of primer (we used Stix Waterborne Bonding Urethane Primer, $15) and let dry completely. Roll on a coat of your desired color (ideas below) and let dry. pieces of shredded foam can often be machine-washed and -dried: Select a delicate cycle and low heat, and add a second rinse. Dense pillows of solid foam, though, should be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth and mild soap, and air-dried. Every other month, machine-wash and -dry the removable cover and go over the foam with your vacuum’s upholstery tool to zap dust. To nix odors, work baking soda into the pillow and, after 15 minutes, vacuum; solid foam can tear and crumble when wet, so avoid immersing or scrubbing it. To help keep any pillow cleaner longer, place it into a liner, like one from GH Seal star Protect-a-Bed, before slipping it into a pillowcase.

Dye from my jeans has turned my leather car seats blue. Help! — DENISE D.

A: I just had the same problem! Here’s what worked for me: Apply a leather cleaner, like the one in the GH Seal star Furniture Clinic Leather Care Kit, to a damp sponge. Squeeze it into a lather and rub the upholstery in a circular motion. Apply more cleaner if needed. Wipe away the stain and excess cleaner with a clean, damp cloth. Then apply the protection cream from the kit to condition the leather and make future stains easier to remove. This also works on purses and boots stained with excess dye that has rubbed off of denim.

A: Some are machine washable, but not all. Soft pillows filled with

pile is very dense, air may not pass between the carpet and the vacuum nozzle, causing the suction to seal some vacuums to the carpet. This makes them impossible to push and could even damage the carpet tufts. If your vacuum nozzle is adjustable, raising it will make the machine easier to push. But before investing in new carpet, call the manufacturer or check its website to see which vacuum brands and models are recommended. With luck, your current vacuum may be among them. Some new vacuums, like GH Seal star Miele Complete C3 for Soft Carpet Powerline, have settings to raise the nozzle to the correct height so pushing them across plush carpeting is easier.

Happy YOU Year! Meet Chrissy Metz. You might know her from This Is Us. She’s a soon-to-be music sensation too, thanks to her 2020 vision plan that will also help you get exactly what you want in life. BY KAYLA KEEGAN

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALLIE HALLOWAY

Selfishness can be a good thing, Chrissy Metz has discovered lately. “I am always putting other people first, to my own detriment,” she says. With the mantra “What’s in it for Chrissy?” cemented in her mind, the 39-year-old is ready to channel her newfound confidence into producing her first movie and creating an upcoming album. “I don’t want to compromise a sound or a note or a word. I want it to be on my terms, which is new for me,” she says. Standing strong about the direction she wants to go is a “big, big goal” this year. She’ll be leaning on what she’s learned so far about how to prioritize yourself to make 2020 another breakthrough year.

1

DO-YOU INSIGHT

YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE IN AN HOUR OR LESS. Your wake-up routine makes a huge difference in your day, so have one and stick to it. Every morning, before reaching for her phone to check her email, Chrissy reads over her gratitude list and meditates for at least 25 minutes. “This causes me to have to go to bed at a good hour to get up in time. There’s such a different feeling around waking up knowing there’s an intention I’m setting for the day,” she explains. From there, she’ll try to make the rest of her a.m. as zen as possible. “I will make sure I’m eating what’s going to be good for me and not, like, eating in the car and rushing. I didn’t realize how much an extra 35, 45 minutes would change my life, but it sets the tone for the whole day. It’s like, whatever happens, I’m going to figure out how to react to it in a sane way and not from a place of harried chaos.”

3

DO-YOU INSIGHT

2

DO-YOU INSIGHT

DON’T LEAVE THE PAST BEHIND YOU. Even the hardest times serve a purpose—but you won’t know what it is if you don’t talk about them. Chrissy’s poverty-stricken childhood was filled with hardship. Her father left her mother, Chrissy and her two siblings when Chrissy was a child. A few years later, her mom married her stepfather, whose nickname was Trigger, as she recounts in her 2018 memoir, This Is Me. Trigger physically and emotionally abused Chrissy growing up, often because of her weight, though they now have a relationship. Therapy, she says, has been key to her emotional growth and health. “We have to talk about our feelings, and I physically have been stuffing them all my life, so to have someone listen to me, without judgment…It was like, Oh, OK, this is different.” Over time, the actress has come to view her difficult past as a vehicle for positivity in the present. “My upbringing was very different and often tumultuous, but all those things shaped me to be who I am,” she says. “I realized those things served me in what I wanted to do, in being vulnerable and having the ability to be very emotional…[I] think [to myself], There’s a reason I went through all these things: to become the person I am and to accept myself through it all.”

SERIOUSLY, NO-BO-DY IS PERFECT. One day is not going to make or break anything — you don’t have to forgo all your hard work over one “Oops!” Tough love doesn’t work for Chrissy, especially when it comes to her body. “I’ve battled weight issues, but I realize that I don’t have to beat myself up if I have XYZ food,” she says while reflecting on what she’s learned about her eating habits. “Instead, I change my perspective and think, What is it that I’m angry about? since we tend to want crunchy foods when we’re angry or ice cream when we soothe ourselves. All these things I’m just trying to be cognizant of.” The key, she has learned, is not to lose your spirit when you stumble. “If a waiter takes a tray of food and a glass falls and the drink spills, they don’t just throw the entire tray on the ground. You get another cup of whatever you spilled and you keep going,” Chrissy explains. “So often if something isn’t perfect, we go ‘I quit!’ That’s not conducive to forward progress, and it’s really about progress, not perfection. If we were perfect, we wouldn’t have anything to attain or achieve.”

4

DO-YOU INSIGHT

NOT EVERY OPINION MATTERS. When you realize whose input is really important, negativity becomes easier to ignore. Chrissy finds inspiration all over, be it from self-help books, podcasts or speeches. When it comes to coping with negative feedback online in particular, one message from Brené Brown, a University of Houston research professor, is the actress’s constant saving grace. Paraphrasing Brown’s sentiments, Chrissy believes “those people [the haters] are in the cheap seats; they’re not in the ring

with the blood, sweat and tears, and they have no idea what my daily life is like. Let me know when you’ve walked in my shoes, but oh, you’re in the cheap seats. That, to me, is how I sort of reconcile whatever you want to say. It’s absolutely your opinion and your perspective, but it’s not the truth.” As for whose words can be considered the truth, it’s close family and friends and, most important, Chrissy herself.

5

DO-YOU INSIGHT

SCROLL OUT OF NEGATIVITY. Tailor your social media accounts to serve you in a positive way.

“Evolution” is the word Chrissy uses to describe her relationship with Instagram. Over time, she has created her own mental checklist that helps her determine whether she should unfollow someone: What is this person or page making me feel? Why is it making me feel this way? Is it about me? “If it’s really not helping me, it’s hurting me,” she says. Asking herself these questions has relieved a lot of unwanted pressure and led her to follow only folks who genuinely make her feel good, like cookie decorators, yogis, musicians and actors. She uses a similar approach when deciding what to share on her own account. “Every single time I post something [I think]: What is my intention? Am I seeking validation? Do I want somebody to think I look pretty because I’m feeling bad about myself today? ” she says. “I always start with that. Sometimes people come to my page to look for positive encouragement… but the only thing I can do is be myself, and hopefully that inspires people.”

DO-YOU INSIGHT

BE THE BOSS INNER YOU’D LOVE PEACE IS TO HAVE. HARD WORK. Taking charge can be scary, but it can also be a major confidence booster.

Being happy starts with being truthful with yourself.

At moments when Chrissy is second-guessing herself or feeling anxious, she turns to her best friend, Donnie Berry. From eating ramen noodles and accepting pay-nothing acting gigs here and there to attending the Emmys together, she and Donnie, whom she calls “one of the most talented people I’ve ever met,” have been through it all. Now Donnie works as Chrissy’s assistant, a dynamic that has come about just as Chrissy is learning how to balance being nice with asserting herself: “I don’t like to make other people feel uncomfortable, because I know what it’s like to be incredibly uncomfortable or picked on or bullied, and I don’t ever want to hurt anyone,” Chrissy explains. Knowing that they genuinely want the best for each other has made it easier for her to ask Donnie for things as his boss: “I can draw my boundaries, he can draw his boundaries, and that’s been really cool.”

Mental contentment isn’t just about treating yourself to a bubble bath or an expensive yoga class. It’s also holding yourself accountable for the ways you cause your own unhappiness and making changes, explains Chrissy. “It’s peace of mind knowing that I can’t blame other people or make excuses if I’m not happy. Knowing that I feel good because I am being diligent about taking care of myself mentally, physically and emotionally creates self-esteem. Staying consistent and rigorously honest is hard; it’s a daily practice. But no one is going to do for me what I need to do for myself.”

CHRISSY D I S H E S on THIS IS US She and her character have a personal tie “Season 2 was the hardest for me, because of [Kate’s] miscarriage story line. But what was really amazing was, someone dear to me went through one, and while I wasn’t able to talk to her about it while we were doing it on the show…it was nice to understand, maybe in a different way, what she went through — obviously not completely, but to sort of have that conversation and ability to understand more.”

You’re not the only one crying “Sometimes I just want to be alone, or I’ll cry on the way home because I didn’t quite get everything out [on set]. I’ll take a bath, I’ll listen to music, whatever is going to bring me joy and get me back to that balanced place. But there are times when it’s very cathartic for me, when I’m dealing with something I’ve never dealt with personally… I have to sort of dig deeper, and sometimes that means being emotional on the way home or for the next couple of days.”

What’s coming in 2020?

THE BACK(STAGE) STORY Kelly Clarkson’s music director was inspired to help Chrissy make her singing aspirations a reality after they met at the Billboard Awards.

“There are some episodes where I’m not in them and we have hiatus breaks and fortunately are able to pursue other projects… With season 4, there is some stuff coming up that we’re going to discover that a lot of people are going to relate to and hopefully be changed by… It’s going to be very emotional, but I think it’s going to bring some empathy and understanding.”

Sharing catchy phrases — spoken by everyone from Albert Einstein to This Is Us patriarch Jack Pearson —has become a go-to form of communication. There are over 5 billion Google search results for “quotes,” 87 million posts with the hashtag #Quotes on Instagram and dozens of groups dedicated to quotes on Facebook and Twitter. Our obsession with quotes may seem to be driven by the rise of social media — where being short and pithy makes it easier to grab attention and likes — but it’s almost as old as time, says Matthew McGlone, associate director of the Center for Health Communication at the University of Texas at Austin. “You hear people talk about proverbs being handed down from generation to generation as wisdom. Sayings have long served as a way to communicate wisdom in teaching and conversation,” he says. But we don’t just use quotes as a quick way to pass on values and life lessons; we also use them to connect and commiserate with one another. “I think that’s the brilliance of a quote — its brevity,” says Today host Hoda Kotb, author of I Really Needed This Today:

moved by a quote — inspirational, sorrowful or otherwise — therapist and coach Jacqueline Socastro, L.C.S.W.-R, says it’s important to get curious about what exactly the words are making you feel, because they can be pointing to a good opportunity for change. She recommends asking yourself, Why does this quote resonate so much with me? What value does this quote honor or support? How can I apply this to my life in a small, actionable way? “Sparking reflection and awareness is very important, but a quote in and of itself is not going to change anything without its being connected to some action,” she says. If you rarely come across sayings that feel likely to inspire that level of introspection, we highly recommend Googling “Jack Pearson quotes.” Seriously, that character is a quote gold mine. — Michelle Manetti Find more quotes to kick off 2020 at goodhousekeeping.com/new-years-quotes.

Words to Live By, a book inspired by the incredible feedback she received from her Instagram fans when she posted a quote. “It’s so short, but all of a sudden it hits you in a space and way that you didn’t know it could. There’s nothing worse than feeling isolated and like no one understands you. Often you can feel an emotion but can’t put it into words. Then all of a sudden you read eight words strung together and you say, ‘That’s it. That’s exactly what I’m feeling.’ ” Right now there’s a big focus on inspirational quotes, ones chosen to motivate us to do or feel something positive. And while this can be very powerful, experts say that sometimes it’s the quotes that relate to sadness, pain and struggles that stick with us most. (Kotb’s most-liked quote on social media is one from author Jamie Anderson about grief.) “Positivity can be off-putting if you’re down and

Easy Ways to Take Better

care of yourself

If your sweeping resolutions (Slash sugar! Exercise every day!) never stick, we have good news for you: Smaller goals add up to big impact. Use these strategies to improve your well-being — mind, body, heart and soul

Cover your sofa with a sheet. Especially if a sick family member takes over the sectional. The flu virus can lounge around on fabrics for hours (hey, it’s a comfy spot!) and on a hard surface, like a coffee table, for days. When your kid (or spouse) is back on his or her feet, throw the sheet in a hot laundry cycle.

Spend 20 minutes clearing clutter.

Mind

Engage all five senses when you eat.

Experts say the practice of mindfulness —being fully aware of your thoughts and feelings in a nonjudgmental way—can help lower your stress responses, improve focus and cognition and fight pain. And if you do it while you eat, it can also help you make smarter choices about what foods you consume, and recognize a sense of fullness before you overdo it. Try this: When you sit down with your meal, focus on how it looks, smells, tastes and feels in your mouth. Don’t watch TV or look at your phone — simply pay attention to your food and your surroundings. Go slow and pause mid-meal to check in on how hungry you are.

Take a course in something brand-new. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try dancing, painting or photography. Active learning exercises your brain — and you may meet new friends.

Plan a play date for yourself. It’s time for margaritas and a movie, so go ahead and book that girls’ night. Researchers aren’t sure why, but having a strong social life seems to be protective against cognitive decline. In fact, studies have found that people with more positive social relationships than their peers have better brainpower as they age.

DONATE YOUR TIME. Volunteering gives people purpose, which raises their self-esteem and lowers loneliness. One study of folks with social anxiety found that those who lent a helping hand felt less anxious about social situations than those who didn’t.

Take a lunchtime stroll. Research shows that a 15-minute midday walk boosts concentration and energy throughout the workday. It’s also a long-term boon: In a recent study, older adults with mild cognitive impairment who completed a regimen of moderateintensity treadmill walking performed significantly better on cognitive tests than before they started working out. MRI scans suggest that exercise may regulate blood flow to the portions of the brain that are associated with memory, cognition and language/ speech processing.

Getting rid of that stack of mail, the pile of shoes by the door and the overflow from your closet may improve your sense of well-being. Studies have linked cluttered environments with stress and lower self-control (say, around food), which can put a damper on your physical health. Try snapping a photo of a messy area of your home, then devote 20 minutes to picking up. When the timer rings, pause for at least 10 minutes (or the rest of the day if you like!). Replacing open-ended cleaning sessions with a time window makes the chore less overwhelming, says Rachel Hoffman, author of Unf *ck Your Habitat: You’re Better Than Your Mess. And comparing the “before” and “after” photos will give you a sense of accomplishment.

Throw open your shades! Better snoozing starts in the morning: A study in Sleep Health found that people exposed to a.m. light fall asleep faster at night. Let the sun in first thing, and leave your shades open at the office to keep your circadian rhythms in sync. Sleep doesn’t just curb grumpiness: Getting less than six hours a night can put you at risk for heart disease and stroke, especially if you have a risk factor like diabetes or high blood pressure.

PLANT SOMETHING. One study found that adults who garden were more likely to eat vegetables than those who didn’t. On top of that, other research shows that people who get their hands in dirt are generally happier and healthier.

This simple habit can ensure that you’re drinking enough water. One in five kids and young adults reported not having a single drop on a given day, according to a JAMA Pediatrics report, and adults often don’t get enough either. Your body needs fluids to maintain proper functioning, and dehydration may lead to constipation, dizziness, confusion and low blood pressure.

The risk of cardiac events like heart attack and stroke was up to 70% lower for people who lifted weights twice a week than for those who never did, a study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found. Weight training also improves bone density and balance. Buy a set of light dumbbells (3 to 8 lbs), and while you watch TV, do moves like bicep curls and lunges. If you don’t have weights handy, drop into a plank and hold it: Start by setting yourself up as if you’re going to do a push-up: Plant your shoulders over your hands, engage your core and your glutes as you keep your body in a straight line and hold for as long as you can. A pound of muscle burns four times as many calories as a pound of fat does, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll torch.

Be picky about evening parties. A study in Sleep Health found that 41% of parents said too many late activities—their own and their kids’ — kept them from getting a good night’s sleep. Disrupted sleep causes ghrelin, the hunger hormone, to increase, and leptin, the “stop eating” hormone, to decrease, leading to overeating. Extra ghrelin can also make you crave high-carb, high-calorie foods. Plus, when you’re exhausted, deep-dish pizza is much more appealing than steamed veggies and exercise is less enticing than hitting the snooze button. Aim for seven to eight hours, and keep the thermostat at 67°F for the best dozing environment. Remember, “No, thanks, let’s do brunch!” may be the healthiest solution to too many afternoon and evening get-togethers.

Stash the cookie jar. And set out a giant fruit bowl instead — you’ll be more likely to reach for an apple or a banana. There really is something to the old adage “Out of sight, out of mind,” according to Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D.N., author of The Superfood Swap. In your pantry, move healthy staples like quinoa, nuts and canned beans to the front of shelves at eye level and put less healthy snacks and sweets on a high shelf. JA N / F E B 2 0 2 0 G H

What that stat really means is that we each have enormous ability to control our own health.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE.

Heart + Soul

Being in nature — especially in motion — boosts mood, sharpens thinking and makes you feel calmer and more generous. Time outdoors may also reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol, says clinical exercise physiologist Paul Innerd, Ph.D., of the University of Sunderland in the U.K.

66

Schedule time to breathe.

Moms (and women in general) tend to put their own needs on the back burner, but even just a few minutes of “me time” will help you reboot. Pausing to savor your favorite hot cuppa and taking a few deep breaths enables you to warm your hands and unwind — and it benefits your heart as well. In fact, one study found that choosing to be alone for even 15 minutes could lead to more relaxation and less stress.

Steep up your morning routine. Adding tea to your a.m. can help support a healthy heart. Research shows that drinking green tea regularly may lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. Studies have also found that people with a habit of drinking black tea have a lower risk of developing heart disease. Tea is a major source of naturally occurring, heart-healthy flavonoids, and taking in a daily dose of at least 200 to 500 mg of these flavonoids can help keep your ticker ticking efficiently. We love GH Nutritionist Approved Lipton Tea, which contains 150 to 170 mg of flavonoids per serving, in the unsweetened regular black and green versions. And contrary to what you may have heard, tea does not dehydrate you, but rather counts toward your healthy water-consumption goals. Proper hydration is important to circulatory functions, so sip away and embrace the day.

PROBLEM

I’M RAVENOUS MID-WORKOUT.

Q: Is soy good for you? I’ve heard that it’s not. A: Some people trash-talk soy because of its potential to be an endocrine disrupter —

meaning it can mimic estrogen in the body, which may lead to hormone overload. But while whole soy does contain natural plant estrogens, they’re much weaker than the human hormone — not worrisome, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, R.D.N., a dietitian in Chicago. Moreover, whole-food soy, such as tofu, tempeh, edamame or miso, is a source of complete protein. The possible problem: soy protein isolates, a highly processed form of soy used in cereals, protein bars and snacks among other foods. These may contain more soy isoflavones, high levels of which may be endocrine disrupters, and thus are best limited. And if you have had estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer, your doctor may advise that you’re better off avoiding soy, says Stephanie Clarke, R.D.N., a dietitian in Washington, DC.

I want to cut back on salt, but my cravings are not cooperating. enjoy salt. That’s because more than 70% of dietary sodium comes from processed and prepackaged foods and restaurant meals, not from salt we add to food. If you avoid the American Heart Association’s Salty Six, which include burritos, pizza and cold cuts, says Blatner, there’s nothing wrong

Solution: Eat a snack 45 minutes to an hour beforehand that combines some carbs for quick energy with a bit of healthy fat or protein to keep you satiated, says Wendy Bazilian, DrPH, R.D.N. Try an apple with nut butter or a wedge of cheese. Apples have a health bonus: They’re rich in fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants (eat the peel!). In fact, one study found that folks who ate at least one small apple per day required fewer doctor visits and Rx meds. Plus, an apple will survive in your gym bag! PROBLEM

MY PRODUCE SPOILS BEFORE I CAN EAT IT. Solution: Use this cheat sheet to avoid food waste. Unripe avocados, bananas, melons, peaches, pears and they ripen, put all but bananas in the fridge.

Leafy greens do best rinsed, wrapped in a towel and refrigerated in a bag. Potatoes and onions need to live separately in a release moisture, which causes them to spoil faster. Carrots and celery can be cut and stored in water in the fridge.

PROBLEM

A smoothie is my go-to breakfast, but it doesn’t hold me until lunch. Solution: Toss in some protein — it takes longer to digest than fruit, giving you energy until your next meal, says Bazilian. The ideal amount of protein at breakfast is about 30 grams, according to a recent review published in Advances in Nutrition, but 15 to 20 grams is a good goal for hunger management. To make a smoothie that can function as a meal, add nut butter, Greek yogurt or walnuts, which pair well with smoothie staple bananas and also have other benefits. The antioxidant-rich nuts have omega-3 fats, which other nuts don’t have. In a study in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, people who drank a daily smoothie with walnuts reported less hunger than those who drank one with similar macronutrients but no walnuts. GH Nutritionist Approved Pick: The plant-based omega-3s in California Walnuts are linked to better cognition, and the nuts have lots of fiber too.

Q: Everyone is cutting out dairy. Should I? A: If it agrees with you and you have no specific medical reason to nix dairy (a good source of protein, calcium, vitamin D, potassium and magnesium), then no. That said, the National Institutes of Health notes that a whopping 65% of us have some lactose intolerance. The not-so-

— often yogurt and hard cheeses — without problems, so get sufficient vitamins, minerals and protein from other sources.

Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) go in the fridge. Put fruit in a separate drawer, because the ethylene gas some give off as they ripen can cause veggies to spoil.

Sneezing the Science of

That little tickle in your nostrils that puts you in a mad scramble for the nearest tissue box is more complicated than you probably realize by DEBORAH SKOLNIK

The Basics

Illustration: Andrea Mongia.

Though sneezing may seem like a fairly straightforward nose-only phenomenon, it’s actually a complex interaction between your nose, your brain and various muscles throughout your body. “The main cause of a sneeze is some kind of irritation in the nasal lining that triggers the body to expel this foreign substance,” says Satish Govindaraj, M.D., director of rhinology and vice chairman of clinical affairs at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. Sneezing is just one of the reflexes that protect the body from potential invaders. So while that loud “Achoo!” may be embarrassing, it’s actually a sign that your body is in healthy fighting mode.

74

G H JA N / F E B 2 0 2 0

PRO M OTIO N

GOOD TO GO The 5 Stages of Sneezing

1

3

first, Something Goes Up Your Nose… Your nasal mucosa, the tissue that lines the nasal cavity, recognizes an intruder such as a virus or an allergen, dust, pepper or perfume. It sends a message via the trigeminal nerve (which carries sensation from the face to the brain) to your brain stem. A series of nerve signals travel to parts of the body (including muscles of the chest, throat and face) to start the sneeze, says Jamie Kiehm, M.D., an allergist and immunologist in New York City.

Your brain gears up your mouth The nerve signals from your brain stem direct the soft palate and the uvula to move down a little. The tongue comes up to block the mouth so the majority of what you sneeze out will exit through your nose. Your eyes involuntarily close, and your diaphragm thrusts upward simultaneously as your chest muscles contract and push air out of your lungs.

2

…Or other weirdness happens Inhaling intruders isn’t the only sneeze trigger. In fact, up to 35% of us sneeze when suddenly exposed to bright light — a phenomenon called the photic sneeze reflex, or ACHOO (Autosomal Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst). It isn’t fully understood, but ACHOO may be caused by sensitivity to stimuli within the part of the cerebral cortex that processes the eyes’ sensory nerve impulses. Having a full stomach, breathing in cold air and feeling cold are also potential sneeze starters.

4

Thar She Blows! Air is expelled through your nostrils at roughly 100 mph. The tongue doesn’t seal off the mouth completely, so some people expel a mixture of snot and spit from there too (you can thank us for the mental image later). Each sneeze can produce up to 40,000 droplets, which can travel up to 10 feet.

5 Bless You! And Bless You Again It isn’t at all uncommon to sneeze multiple times — that’s the body working extra hard to get rid of what’s bothering it.

Timberline® UHD Shingles with StainGuard Plus™ Timberline® UHD Shingles offer a thicker, ultra-dimensional woodshake look for your roof and may increase your home’s resale value, too. NEW RESEARCH AREAS

HOW OLD ARE YOU

Really?

The rise of epigenetics (a complex field of study that examines specific changes in gene activity) and the identification of biological age have been regarded by some as the holy grail in understanding how we grow older. “Previously we assumed that the genome, our entire DNA library, didn’t change throughout a person’s life. That’s been proven wrong — it can be modified by the environment,” says Elaine Chin, M.D., founder and chief medical officer at Executive Health Centre and author of Lifelines: Unlock the Secrets of Your Telomeres for a Longer, Healthier Life. Scientists have now identified biomarkers (chemical changes) in an individual’s DNA that correspond with aging. These changes can help predict how well you’re going to age, how long you’re going to live and even if you’re at increased risk for chronic disease.

ROBUST HEALTH TOOLS

By NICOL E SAP ORI TA

IN OUR CULTURE, WE’VE ALWAYS NOTED MAJOR MILESTONES BY AGE—

voting at 18, being legally allowed to drink at 21 and retiring at 65 (or so). All these are based on how long you’ve been alive, and of course that can’t be changed. But our chronological age doesn’t account for how we interpret or feel about that number. For many, 40 is the new 30 and 60 is the new 40. Much of this shift in mindset can be attributed to the ever-expanding field of aging research and its perceived infinite potential. “There’s a hypothesis that if you can manipulate the aging process, you could possibly forestall the development of chronic disease and get people living longer and healthier,” says Marie A. Bernard, M.D., deputy director of the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of

Health. “That’s an exciting development since I began my medical career in the 1980s,” she adds. The other development is that some scientists today are less interested in the date on your birth certificate than they are in a different marker: your biological age. Biological age is a measurement that, instead of tracking years, looks at chemical marks on DNA that show how our biological systems are actually aging. “People are very diverse in terms of their aging rates. The level one person hits by 50, another may not hit until 60,” explains Morgan Levine, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology at Yale School of Medicine. She’s also head of bioinformatics at Elysium Health, a life sciences company recognized with our GH Innovation Emblem for its commitment to scientific rigor and research. So the real question is, how can we change our biological age?

Over the past decade, people everywhere have benefited from tech’s influence on health — from wearable trackers and smartwatches that monitor activity, heart rate and sleep to testing kits that provide info about ancestry, gut microbiome and fertility. A new category of at-home tests is now emerging that goes beyond ancestry to assessing aging and more. For about a year, Levine has been working with Elysium Health to create Index, an at-home test that evaluates over 100,000 epigenetic biomarkers on a person’s DNA. As with other kits, all you do is provide a saliva sample. Four to six weeks later, you receive your report, in which you’ll learn your cumulative rate of aging and find out whether your biological age is older or younger than the number on your driver’s license. “About 68% of people will have a biological age within five years of their chronological age, but you can also find individuals who are a decade or more older or younger,” she explains. The most important thing to keep in mind is that if your rate of biological aging is less than one, you’re aging more slowly than your actual years.

DEFY YOUR AGE So what does one do with that information? According to the researchers, take charge. “More than 90% of our longevity in terms of life span and health span — the healthy years of life — is determined by our environment, not genetics,” stresses Eric Verdin, M.D., president and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.

Getty Images.

For years, health researchers and entrepreneurs have been studying aging down to the cellular level to see if it’s possible to slow, stop or even reverse the factors that influence how getting older affects us. Now their findings have the potential to shake up everything we thought we knew about aging — but the burning question remains: Can we actually change how we age?

OUTSMART AGING

“What you eat, what you drink, how well you sleep and the quality of your relationships all have a real impact.” If you see room for improvement in your biological age, think of it as a chance to reevaluate your choices. That is especially true for people whose biological age is much older than their chronological age. On the other hand, a lower biological age could serve as validation and reinforcement of your current practices. While aging researchers are still identifying proven adjustments that can move the needle, a number of behaviors are often linked with a lower biological age. These include eating well, getting enough sleep, exercising, not smoking and avoiding too much alcohol. “We don’t have a definitive intervention for aging yet,” says Dr. Bernard. But people can turn to actionable lifestyle choices. And while getting into good habits at a younger chronological age is best, she stresses that it’s never too late to start. We have also reported on new science-backed supplements that move beyond standard nutrition, like Elysium’s Basis, which is designed to increase levels of NAD+ (a critical coenzyme that declines as we age). Dr. Verdin says that one of the biggest positive changes to reduce deterioration is doing more physical activity. Even as little as 20 minutes of exercise a day (walking counts!) can dramatically improve your health.

PRIORITIZE TRUSTED CARE Knowing your biological age can be a great resource for taking control, but it shouldn’t replace medical care. The same goes for all at-home kits. “A false sense of security can be a widespread issue with these products,” cautions Matthew J. Ferber, Ph.D., director of the Mayo Clinic GeneGuide laboratory. Whether you’re screening for the BRCA gene or assessing heart health, even good news does not mean you have zero risk. Also, it’s vital to remember that results from these tools shouldn’t negate age-based medical recommendations or doctor-administered tests. Even if your biological age is younger than your chronological age, you should get a Pap smear every three years from age 21 on, annual mammograms starting as soon as age 40 (depending on your risk factors) and colorectal screenings starting at 45.

“ 90% of our longevity IS

DETERMINED BY ENVIRONMENT.

WHAT’S NEXT? Dr. Verdin imagines a future when biomarker-based tests will become part of your regular doctor visits and create a sense of empowerment. “Aging by itself is a risk factor for a whole range of conditions like heart attack, stroke, certain cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease,” he says. If we could identify our risk before a major event occurred, could we prevent it? That’s the next question researchers are working to answer.

4 WAYS YOU CA N WOR K TO PU T TI M E O N YOU R SI DE Spend 20 minutes outside. Stress can impact all aspects of life, including cellular health. New research suggests that spending time in nature each day can lower stress hormones by over 20% per hour. Whether you stroll in the park or sit in your backyard, you’ll get the benefits of a daily “nature pill.”

Turn down the temp at night. Over one-third of us aren’t getting enough shut-eye, and the effects go beyond feeling tired — a study found that just one night of sleep deprivation could negatively impact biological aging. Aim to snooze for seven to eight hours a night by keeping your bedroom in the mid- to high 60s. Cooler temps can help you doze off and sleep soundly.

Pencil in a brisk walk. Moving for 30 minutes daily may help you shave nearly a decade off your biological age. One study found that highly active adults had a nine-year aging advantage over people who were sedentary and a seven-year one over those who were moderately active.

Eat fish twice a week. A Mediterranean diet, rich in omega-3s, has been linked to lower aging rates. Not a fan of seafood? Focus on limiting sodium, saturated fat and added sugar and go heavy on 100% whole grains as well as fruits and veggies. You can also get plant-based omega-3s from walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseeds.

• Had perfect scores for fit, support and cushioning. • Ideal for runners; gel absorbs impact of strenuous steps. • Testers unanimously wanted to continue wearing them.

• Got high scores across all categories in consumer tests. • The lightest pair. • A nice price!

• Scored highest for comfort. • Cushioning absorbs and returns energy for less strain. • Testers said the knit top helped them “fit like a glove.”

• Great cushioning and support. • Impressive traction. • Dr. Metzl suggests these to help “development of ankle and leg stabilizing muscles.”

• Heaviest of all the winners. • A tester said she found them a bit slippery on a wet surface.

• Not enough support for those with ankle or knee pain, says Jordan Metzl, M.D., a sports medicine physician at New York City’s Hospital for Special Surgery. • Slip-on; tongue doesn’t move.

• The most expensive pair. • One tester said, “I felt like they made my feet look huge.” • Soles can be squeaky on indoor flooring.

• May be too rigid for everyday wear. • Slip-on; tongue doesn’t move.

ASICS earned top scores in nearly every category. After examining cross sections of all the shoes, Emily Splichal, D.P.M., a podiatrist at the Center for Functional & Regenerative Podiatric Medicine in New York City, was wowed by the control and stability this one offered.

This pair was Splichal’s top pick, since the knit top offers stellar freedom of movement. Part of what makes the shoes so versatile is the lightweight foam in the midsoles and plush insoles. “Right when I put them on, they started molding to my feet,” said one consumer tester.

These clinched the title of Most Comfortable, and testers said they felt like “walking on a cloud.” Dr. Metzl liked the midsoles and would suggest these to someone “complaining of joint aches.” This was the only pair other than our winner that all testers said they’d keep wearing!

If you’re planning to hit the trails or walk on uneven surfaces, these are for you. Testers were shocked to find such great traction in shoes that didn’t look awkward or bulky. Splichal also liked the knit uppers, which can stretch to better fit wider feet or issues like bunions and hammertoes.

Stop your cutting board from slipping.

You use your cutting board for everything from chopping veggies to carving meats, but if it doesn’t have grips on the bottom, any little mid-cut slip could be dangerous. Here’s a quick safety fix our Kitchen Appliances Lab pros learned in culinary school: Place a single dampened paper towel (like GH Seal star Bounty) under your wood or plastic board to prevent it from moving. This is such a simple, yet successful, solution that during our Lab’s tests of cutting boards, we didn’t knock off points for lack of grips.

Family Game Night

FAST FUN Our kid testers loved this sped-up, voice-activated Monopoly.

Playing board games with your kids can help them build social and cognitive skills. Games “teach children to work as a team, negotiate, follow rules and use spatial reasoning and logic,” explains Ellie Dix, a former school behavior specialist and author of The Board Game Family: Reclaim Your Children From the Screen. They also improve kids’ response to delayed gratification. Many digital games provide a quick hit of the “happy chemicals” dopamine and oxytocin, which is why they’re so addictive, says Hanna Bogen Novak, M.S., a director at the Center for Connection family therapy practice. Board games are a slower burn, and regular play can retrain brains to get the same buzz from a delayed release of chemicals. That helps kids focus on long-term projects like schoolwork too. If you’re having trouble getting children to sit down and play with you, Dix recommends a little subterfuge: “Get out a game and ignore your children for a bit. You’ll be surprised how fascinated they’ll become by what you’re doing.” Especially if you’re playing one of the Little Lab– approved board games on the next page.

SPEEDY SPACE CLEANUP MISSION

Practice colors, taking turns and more with this sneaky teaching game. Little ones will love showing off their own belly buttons as they try to match their button and teddy bear pieces with the ones on the board. Lab Results Parents said younger kids had so much fun (and stayed so engaged) that they asked to play over and over again. Peaceable Kingdom Button, Button, Belly Button, $16, two or more players

Race to clear your planet’s mess first. Roll the dice to see if you can off-load trash to a neighbor. But watch out—everyone else is giving you their junk. It’s fast-paced and doesn’t stop until someone wins. Lab Results The more people you play with, the more fun (and hectic) it gets. Kids and grown-ups shared tons of laughs. TECHED-OUT MUSICAL CHAIRS

You want to find the head and body cards that match to make one animal. But the real thrill starts when you don’t get a pair: Flip a dog’s head to go with a horse’s body, and everyone has to bark as they gallop around. Lab Results We like that this is a game in which it’s more fun not to win. It’s also a great chance to teach kids about animals. ThinkFun Heads Talk Tails Walk, $15, two to five players

The classic game just got an upgrade. One person reads something from the gadget like “Butts up if you’ve ever had a dog.” Those who have, get up. Anyone standing has to run to claim a chair before the music ends. Lab Results You can play this almost anywhere — indoors or outside — and there are no small pieces that could get lost. PlayMonster Butts Up, $23, three or more players KEY SKILL-BUILDERS

HUNGRY DRAGON ADVENTURE

8+

VOICE-CONTROLLED MONOPOLY SET

Kids will have a blast reaching into the dragon’s belly for a trinket. If it matches the color of his glowing nose, they keep it. The first person with one of each figurine wins. Lab Results Preschoolers went nuts for the sounds, lights and “magic” look into his belly. It’s challenging enough to keep their attention, but doesn’t feel impossible to win. Goliath Dragon Snacks, $25,

Mr. Monopoly’s hat doubles as a speaker to track players’ bank accounts and properties. All you have to do is roll the dice, press your token’s button and say “Buy Park Place.” Lab Results Testers loved that this was a faster-moving version of the original that also prevented cheating. Caveat: It didn’t always recognize commands right away. Hasbro Monopoly Voice Banking, $30, two to four players

TEACH YOUR PET GOOD MANNERS

A tasty treat you’ll feel good about giving

Address these common pet behavior problems so your animal kingdom can live in peace and harmony

SOLUTION: First, know that chewing helps prevent dental disease, boredom and stress-related behavior issues, according to Andrea Arden, trainer and Animal Planet pet expert. But you need to redirect it to a better target. Make sure your dog has lots of chew toys, and rotate them to stave off boredom. If you catch him chewing something he shouldn’t, certified dog trainer Colleen DemlingRiley, owner of Pawtopia Dog Training in San Diego, says to take it, calmly say “No” and replace it with a toy. Praise him as he grabs it so he’ll understand the right targets. When you are out, use a crate or an exercise pen to keep pets away from hazards. PROBLEM: YOUR CAT PEES OUTSIDE HER LITTER BOX SOLUTION: Check with your veterinarian to rule out a medical issue causing frequent urination, says

Arden. If she’s healthy, consider possible stressors. Urinating in places they shouldn’t is one way cats express displeasure. Your cat also may dislike the litter box. Clean it often, move it to a quieter location, change the type of litter or get a new box. PROBLEM: YOUR DOG NIPS SOLUTION: Young pets nip because that’s how they engage with their own species, Arden explains. Games like fetch can actually teach them not to bite. Demling-Riley suggests putting your puppy on a 10- to 15-foot leash and tossing a toy two feet away. When he grabs it, praise him and guide him back with the leash. Once he gets close, calmly say “Drop it” and show him a treat. When he obeys, praise him and give him the treat. Lengthen the distance gradually, stopping while he is still engaged to keep him excited about the back-and-forth. —Lizz Schumer
