Kenneth Goh and his mum, Teresa Ooi

It’s always a tricky thing to talk about ageing. So much time, money and effort spent at aestheticians and doctors’ offices, not to mention the vitamins, supplements and anti-ageing potions we take or slather on, all in the pursuit of that elusive fountain of youth. If you, like me, fight the daily fight against gravity and wrinkles, then our annual Spa Awards will be a godsend: It’s the ultimate guide to the most pampering, age-defying and youth-imparting treatments and programmes to have you looking and feeling on top of the world.Turn to page 74 to see how you can battle the odds Father Time has stacked against us. But before you start thinking of the scalpel and needle as lifesavers, read our piece,“Old or Weird?” on page 104.The last thing you want to do is drastically alter your face and emerge with a trout pout or a mien that resembles a lioness.Take a moment to think of the women (and men) who’ve had cosmetic surgery done and you’ll know what I mean. One lady I’ve worked with many times, and whom I now call a friend, is our cover star, Cindy Crawford. I marvel at how spirited and youthful she looks in our cover shoot on page 108. I’ve shot and featured Cindy on our cover three times; the first took place more than 15 years ago, when she was 38, for our December 2005 issue. Of that first encounter, Cindy says, “I remember doing my first cover for Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore. I was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and had arrived to shoot at Carcosa Seri Negara, a beautiful colonial hotel. I instantly connected with Kenneth Goh, the Editor-in-Chief, as well as Simon Upton, the photographer. It was such an elegant story.” In this issue, the 53-year-old recounts some special moments with her family, talks in depth about who her heroes are, and how much she loves being at the forefront of daughter Kaia Gerber’s supersonic modelling career. Cindy still wears fashion so beautifully, and with the revival of everything from 19th-century panniers to ’90s slip dresses, could we see yet another comeback? Read our trend report on page 42 to get the low-down on “Vision 2020”. Perhaps nostalgia has even seeped into my professional life. The last six months has seen me sharing a lot more on social media, with videos and photos of me and my mother,Teresa Ooi. As the saying goes, the apple never falls far from the tree, so it’s no surprise that I followed in her footsteps and became a journalist. In her 60s, she still writes and edits today with a skill and a flair for words that I marvel at. And don’t even get me started on her youthful looks—the result of a daily regime of exercise, brisk walks, stretching, and a healthy diet of fish and vegetables. No fillers, no botox, nothing has been done to her face or body, except what good food, daily exercise and God has provided.Watch our chats in a special series titled Peranakan Diaries, which sits both on our website and my Instagram. It is precious moments like these that make me realise that relationships are what we all strive for. If Mum can be that fabulous at every age, there’s hope for me still.

Few trends can truly stand the test of time like minimalism does, and for good reason. At its core, minimalist fashion is reductivism, so pare down your closet to timeless basics and key essentials that can easily be put together. This season at Givenchy, Clare Waight Keller made a strong case for romantic minimalism, melding the classic cool of ’90s New York

11

with the dreaminess of Parisian couture— best captured in a bowed bustier dress with a single winged puff sleeve (#2). Channel that same sensual confidence with an Ellery cropped top with voluminous sleeves (#5) and a 5 6

high-waisted skirt from Balenciaga (#4), or throw on a Jacquemus dress with bold sculpted shoulders (#10). Add flair with lapis and gold double-link earrings from

10

Bottega Veneta (#9) and a chunky ring from Pomellato (#6), then 7

slip into a pair of luscious mules from The Row (#8). The finishing touches: a flick of eyeliner (#7), a slick of a rosy-hued lippie (#11) and an oversize nappa leather

This rounded collar was made popular by the costume worn by actress Maude Adams in the 1905 Broadway production of Peter Pan, where she played the titular character. More than 100 years later, the demure lapel has been refreshed with an edgier touch this spring. Louis Vuitton’s oversize styles are splashed with vibrant ’70s prints while over at CELINE, lace-trimmed collars peeked out from varsity sweaters. Like its namesake, the boy in the fairy tale who wouldn’t grow up, this timeless style injects youth and innocence to any outfit.

The piece to covet

Some might say don’t fix what ain’t broken, but Paul Andrew subscribes to the adage that to improve is to change. For spring/summer 2020, the footwear maestro turned creative director of Salvatore Ferragamo decided to reimagine the brand’s beloved Vara flat, designed 41 years ago by Fiamma Ferragamo, daughter of the House’s founder. With lightness and modernity in mind, the shoe now has a sleeker pointed toe, a supersized bow and sculptural block heels informed by the work of American contemporary artist and sculptor Richard Serra. When Andrew began work on his new collection, he filled his mood board with images of Italian summers in the ’80s, when days were long and languid, basking under the sun, surrounded by sand and sea. His new Viva shoes reflect that breezy summertime spirit, with the hues of blue skies and clear seas rendered on denim, suede and leather—get ready to be whisked away on a sweet escape. ■ The Viva is $990 and is available at Salvatore Ferragamo, #01-40 & #02-42 Paragon (tel: 6738 3206). 38

Marine Serre has been seeing dystopia. Her show last season was staged in an underground bunker, and though she moved outdoors this season, the unrelenting rain lent the proceedings a foreboding vibe that was reinforced by the clothes. Titled “Marée Noire”, which refers to oil spills but is directly translated as “black tide”, the show opened with inky blacks and oil-slick surfaces, accessorised with clanking belts and chains. Models had pouches, backpacks and reusable water bottles strapped around their bodies. Combined with the rugged materials and protective silhouettes, they had the air of survivalists in an apocalyptic aftermath—an unmistakable commentary on the climate crisis. Serre confronted the issue by working mostly with upcycled fabrics, recycled plastic and reclaimed metal hardware. Alongside her distinctive scarf dresses, Serre also flexed her tailoring muscles, cutting lean, mean suits that she layered over her signature crescent-moon bodysuits. The range of Serre’s output was amplified by the diversity of her casting; women and men of varying ages, shapes and colours stomped down the runway—beacons of hope for a new tomorrow.

An iconic look made new again with high-shine textures and shorts

Yves Saint Laurent broke all the fashion rules and caused a sensation when he unveiled Le Smoking in 1966. More than half a century later, the tuxedo suit is firmly ensconced as a wardrobe staple for generations of chic women. For spring/summer 2020, Anthony Vaccarello served up endless iterations of the look, rendered in snakeskin, sequins and pinstripes. Accompanying the pieces were sheer shirts, pussybow blouses or nothing at all; on the bottom, they were paired with everything from hot pants to bermuda shorts and skinny, high-waisted trousers. To drive home the agelessness of Le Smoking, Vaccarello enlisted Juergen Teller to shoot the collection on a timeless cast of supermodels that included Stella Tennant, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.

Christian Dior was famously a gallerist before he turned to couture. So it’s only natural that art runs in the veins of the Dior maison. For the fourth edition of the Dior Lady Art project, the brand enlisted 11 artists from around the world to put their personal spin on the iconic bag made famous by Lady Diana. Marguerite Humeau blended art and science, transforming the shape into a wave using 3D printing. Kohei Nawa padded his with PVC pockets and filled them with coloured gel, creating magma-like patterns, while Raqib Shaw printed, embossed and embellished the Lady Dior with dreamy floral scenes.

GOOD LIVING

Hedi Slimane is the kind of d designer who commands a loyal army of obsessives. b i For F those where head-to-toe CELINE is not enough, the brand has released a capsule of lifestyle accessories. Launched in tandem with the recent haute parfumerie collection, the pieces are stocked in the dedicated space on Rue Saint-Honoré that houses the fragrances. Like the perfumes, the objects are conceptualised as a tribute to the idea of ritual—be that of grooming, smoking or leisure. In true Slimane style, these seemingly everyday accoutrements are crafted in ultra-luxe materials such as leather, crocodile skin, python skin and lizard skin.

Leather Elephant phone cases, $690 each, Loewe

BY JEFFREY YAN

TA K E COVER The Loewe Elephant lephant bag was a hit the moment it was introduced by Jonathan Anderson. Now, the brand has given it a new twist, transforming it into a phone cover for the iPhone X, XS and XS Max, in standout colours such as yellow and pink as well as neutrals. Not just an ornamental accessory, the phone cover is functional, with the ears and trunk of the Elephant case serving as a stand to prop up the phone both horizontally and vertically. There is also a tonal strap that enables the phone to be carried around the neck or wrist.

Clockwise from top left: Louis Vuitton x League of Legends bucket hat, $995; bag charm, $710; Boite Chapeau Souple bag, $3,600, Louis Vuitton

Nicolas Ghesquière’s love for futurism is a well-documented fact; his collections often reference cult sci-fi films such as Akira and Blade Runner, and he was one of the first in fashion to venture into the use of digital avatars, with Final Fantasy’s Lightning fronting one of his earliest Louis Vuitton campaigns. This season, he takes his passion for future fashion to the next level with the release of a capsule designed in collaboration with Riot Games’ hugely popular “League of Legends”, customising the French house’s iconic Monogram with a special League of Legends motif that was splashed across ready-to-wear as well as brand sics such as the Neverfull and Speedy bags, and his hit Archlight sneakers.

R AV E N E W WORLD e spring/summer 2020 ection of MCM marks the debut of Global Creative Officer Dirk Schönberger, who is best known for elevating adidas from sportswear giant to fashion power player through the strategic partnerships he has masterminded with the likes of Raf Simons, Yohji Yamamoto, Stella McCartney and Kanye West. For his first collection, he collided rave and disco cultures— the former is a vital part of Berlin today while the latter soundtracked the era when the brand was birthed, in the ’70s. The result was glamour with a dash of street edge—think long lines and oversize silhouettes, tailoring paired with streetwear, and bold primary hues clashing with neutrals and metallics.

This season, designers zeroed in on the trench coat, reinventing the wardrobe classic in many fabullous ways. The most ingenious and compelling propositions came from Junya Watanabe and Maison Margiela, who chopped up and deconstructed the trench to form entirely different John Galliano at M garments. At Balenciaga and Michael Kors Collection, shoulders were the focal point, blown up huge at the former and romantically ruffled at the latter. At Hermès, leather harness details harked back to the House’s equestrian DNA while Burberry went soft with trimmings in crystal and eyelets—ensuring that trench codes will never be the same again. Tailoring mounted a full-forced fu comeback last year, but for spring/summer 2020, designers put a new spin on power dressing that will prove popular and practical for summer months and warmer climes. The season’s most alluring suits were worn with shorts; specifically, the longer, roomier bermuda variety. Colours ranged from monotones to cool greys and violets. At Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello updated the House’s iconic Le Smoking with plenty of leg on show. Ian Griffiths of Max Mara sent out an army of Bond girls and boss women in cropped, monochromatic suiting while Virginie Viard fashioned shorts suits out of tweed for a more youthful take on Chanel’s new brand of French chic. The long and short of it: It’s the season to be making strides in reworked workwear. 44

0 ...or perhaps,“undressed” would be more apt.The biggest trend of the season served as a palate cleanser f r s of h ’70s sepia-tinged nostalgia, exuberant ’80s maximalism and the increasingly homogenous streetwear today. The revival of the ’90s took its cues from the bare-skinned, slip-dress sensuality of Calvin Klein and the anti-fashion fashion of Helmut Lang. Daniel Lee led the charge with his ongoing refresh of Bottega Veneta, while at Givenchy, Clare Waight Keller revisited her Klein years and the New York of her youth. Even Alessandro Michele, ever the maximalist, felt the change in the air and presented a more stripped-back vision at Gucci that nodded back to its Tom Ford years, marking time to rewind and hit refresh. AC T I I After going the traditional route as celebrated creative directors at fashion’s biggest houses, these designers have left the system and returned with something a little more personal. By Jeffrey Yan

HARPER’S BAZAAR FEBRUARY 2020

creative directorship at a heritage-steeped house used to be the holy grail of fashion, with young designers gunning for top positions at brands owned by conglomerates such as LVMH, Kering and Richemont. Scoring one meant an instant stamp of approval from the establishment, and provided a shortcut to stardom and huge paydays. Designers who made their name helming heritage houses include John Galliano and Alexander McQueen at Givenchy, Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga, Christopher Bailey at Burberry andTom Ford at Gucci. In the past decade though,as fashion and media changed beyond recognition, cracks started showing in the system. Both Galliano and McQueen experienced falls as dramatic as their ascensions.Galliano’s successor at Dior, Raf Simons, burned out from the intensity and was later unceremoniously ousted from his next job at Calvin Klein. Alber Elbaz suffered the same fate at Lanvin, despite turning the fortunes of the French brand around. Ghesquière left Balenciaga embroiled in an ugly spat while the stint of his successor,Alexander Wang, was marked by lacklustre showings and an abrupt exit. Perhaps burned out by the increasingly sped-up and corporatised fashion world, a whole host of star designers have left high-profile positions in recent years and have so far opted out of rejoining the industry. The most notable absence of Phoebe Philo, who left Celine after transforming the once-forgotten brand into a moneymaker and critical darling for LVMH, had Philophiles clamouring for an eponymous label. But the famously reclusive designer has so far remained mum. Others have pivoted into charity work: Frida Giannini, ousted from Gucci in 2014, now sits on the board of Save the Children. Bouchra Jarrar, who left Lanvin after only 16 months, is currently working with the Musée des Art Décoratifs to create programmes that benefit disadvantaged young women. Some have explored different branches of design—Jonathan Saunders, who led Diane von Furstenberg for 18 months, is now designing furniture while Alessandra Facchinetti, who was last atTod’s,most recently designed costumes for the Don Carlo opera at Switzerland’sTheater St.Gallen. While the industry waits with bated breath to see how Elbaz’s joint venture with Richemont would take shape, a small group of designers are rethinking the way they want to play the fashion game. Having clocked in time at the most hallowed houses in Paris and Milan, from Schiaparelli to Saint Laurent and Sonia Rykiel, they realise that the old way of doing things is no longer feasible in a rapidly changing landscape. As the world literally burns around us, these visionary minds are finding new paths forward by promoting thoughtful consumption and smaller-scale productions, rejecting excessive consumerism, instant gratification and throwaway culture.

RANDOM IDENTITIES by Stefano Pilati From the tulip skirt to theTribute heels, Stefano Pilati’s eight-year tenure atYves Saint Laurent yielded plenty of commercial hits and an alluring take on French chic. He followed that up with three years at Ermenegildo Zegna, bringing a softer, more languid elegance to the Italian menswear giant. Disillusioned with the corporate fashion system, Pilati retreated from the public eye in 2016; he finally resurfaced in late 2018 with the launch of Random Identities—a label inspired by the energetic club culture of his new home city, Berlin. “Being out of the fashion mainland is a conscious decision,” said Pilati to Angelo Flaccavento for Business of Fashion in April last year of his new label.“Berlin is a city with a modern mentality—a free place for free thinking, where I can operate in my own bubble and do my own thing the way I want to do it, at my own pace.” From the get-go,Random Identities stood out for how different it was from the old luxury model in which Pilati used to operate. During his hiatus, the designer has come to see luxury as something defined not by pricing, but by quality, scarcity and its value to its intended audience. As such, the brand does not play by conventional fashion rules. Prices hover around the relatively attainable $100 to $800 mark and there are no seasonal collections, lavish runway shows, splashy campaigns, flagship store, e-commerce or even delineation between the sexes. Instead, Random Identities pieces are genderless and released in thematic drops—way before Rihanna adopted the model for her LVMH-backed Fenty label—with distribution limited to SSENSE online, and the Dover Street Market network offline. What connects each capsule is a distinct mix of the utilitarian and militaristic undercut with a touch of subversion and kink—clothes that would fit right in at Berlin’s iconic techno club Berghain. What you won’t find are clichéd streetwear tropes, Insta-baiting graphics and brash logos; it speaks volumes that the brand’s logo is a plain blacked-out bar. In a sign that Pilati’s game-changing gambit has caught on with the industry at large, Random Identities was invited by the world’s largest menswear trade show,Pitti Uomo,to show as a special guest at its recent January edition—giving the designer a larger platform to broadcast his radical message and proving that one doesn’t have to conform in order to win.

Romantic silhouettes cut with a sense of contemporary ease by Marco Zanini for Zanini Collection

ZANINI COLLECTION by Marco Zanini Marco Zanini’s claim to fame was resurrecting the dusty Rochas brand in 2009 after Olivier Theyskens’s departure in 2006 left the label adrift and drowned out by bigger competitors. Staying on for five years, Zanini led Rochas from strength to strength before he was poached by Diego Della Valle of Tod’s Group to head the revival of the long-dormant Schiaparelli name. His vision for the iconic Parisian house was delightfully madcap and utterly glamorous, but Zanini found himself let go after only a year. “It became increasingly difficult to work with big brands, and I realised it didn’t represent a creative challenge anymore. We were all experiencing this fashion fatigue. Everything feels so corporate,” Zanini said to Dana Thomas of The NewYork Times in September last year. Zanini stayed away from the industry until early last year, when the designer heard the call of fashion once more. With the launch of Zanini Collection, he was determined to do things differently. For one, the landscape is now vastly altered—everyone having woken up to the harmfulness of the excess and disposability that runs rampant through fashion today. Zanini’s response to that is to place thoughtfulness at the heart of his new brand, deliberately keeping every aspect small and highly personal. Operations at Zanini Collection are practically a one-man show. For his debut fall/winter 2019 collection, Zanini shot the lookbook, presented the collection in his own Milan apartment, invited buyers, and fielded orders all by himself. In the spirit of keeping things small, the designer will only be releasing two 50

HARPER’S BAZAAR FEBRUARY 2020

collections a year, with each clocking in at less than 30 looks. The pieces themselves are made in limited quantities—to preserve a sense of specialness, but also because the designer works with fabrics produced in small-batch runs. Instead of trendy, throwaway pieces, Zanini designs with an eye towards timelessness, resulting in pieces that feel like modern heirlooms—precious things to love, keep and pass down. He achieves this with his uniquely romantic yet contemporary take on historicism—a poet sleeve referencing 17th-century dresses, jet beading that nods to the flapper era, duchess satin that evokes mid-century couture, and lustrous kimono silks that bring to mind ’40s boudoir dressing.Tailoring has also emerged as a strong suit; his stands out for their powerful proportions given hourglass shapes via silk ribbons that tie at the back. Furthering the aura of exclusivity, Zanini is keeping distribution tight. For now, the designer is bypassing e-commerce—preferring the clothes to be discovered in stores and for clients to fall in love with the way they feel—and partnering with only 10 retailers worldwide, which includes esteemed names such as Dover Street Market, Club 21 and Ikram; a convincing argument for thinking small but aiming high.

JULIE DE LIBRAN

Julie de Libran elevates straightforward shapes with textural details and intricate embroideries, crafting precious keepers

PHOTOGRAPHY: COURTESY OF DOVER STREET MARKET (RANDOM IDENTITIES)

by Julie de Libran Julie de Libran’s CV is chock-full of the most illustrious names in fashion. She first cut her teeth at Giorgio Armani, then headed up the celebrity-dressing division at Prada, eventually ending up as Marc Jacobs’s right-hand woman at Louis Vuitton, directing his womenswear studio. When Jacobs left Vuitton, de Libran was recruited for the top job at Sonia Rykiel. In her five years at the brand, she brought the one-time beacon of liberated Left Bank cool back into the thick of the fashion conversation. De Libran added a contemporary edge to the Sonia Rykiel signatures of striped knits, exposed seaming and easy ’70s silhouettes. However, there was a tension between heritage, creative energy and commercial viability that proved tricky to resolve; the business side never seemed completely aligned with her vision. Sales suffered, de Libran left, and soon after, the much-loved brand filed for bankruptcy and liquidated its US business. In a conversation with Dana Thomas of The NewYork Times in September 2019, de Libran said of her time at big brands:“I think of Louis Vuitton, where I was for six years, and then Rykiel; it’s about quantity and selling, and you lose the knowledge and appreciation. I learned so much, but I’ve done that school. I can do it on my own now, properly.” And what de Libran wants to do on her own is quietly radical in its way.Towards the end of her Rykiel tenure, she introduced an haute couture collection and started nudging the brand towards sustainable materials. It is these two tenets that form the core of the eponymous brand she launched last summer. Presented during haute couture fashion week in a highly intimate showcase at her own home, de Libran looked to the couture model by selling her pieces made-to-order only to avoid overproduction and wastage. On the sustainability side, she committed to using deadstock fabrics. Due to the limited nature of her raw materials, the resulting products are similarly exclusive, with some pieces existing only as one-offs and others produced in extremely small runs. The designer has also adopted the practice of doing one thing and doing it well. Her collections consist only of dresses, a garment she says “has a strong personality” and “reflects how a woman feels and sees herself ”. Hers range from streamlined sheaths and billowy babydolls to fringed party numbers and pailletteencrusted goddess gowns— giving new meaning to the adage “dress for success”. n

Silk devore dress featuring the statues of the Fountain of Neptune. The charming locale complemented the collection perfectly. Sophisticated leather-framed sunglasses. Overalls and a scarf cap in a print reminiscent of that on Paul Andrew’s childhood beachwear

There is a sense of lightness and joyfulness to Creative C Director Paul Andrew’s fourth show for Salvvatore Ferragamo. His inspiration for the Italian house’s spring/ summer 2020 collection springs from a photogrraph of a summer vacation he took with his family in n Sicily during the ’80s. Andrew wanted to capture the carefr c ree spirit and sun-drenched innocence of that idyllicc islannd getaway of his childhood. With that in mind, he blaanketed the collection with resort-ready looks and swimw wear— —a refreshing sight to behold. In the photograph, “we were wearing Ber muda prints and smiles,” said Andrew, who translated these se into the abstract prints on some of the pieces in the colleection. Another print that featured prominently on shirts and dresses d was inspired by the marble and bronze statues of the Fountain of Neptune in Florence, a 16th-century monument reccently restored to its former glory with the support of o the Ferragamo family. While the eye-catching prints were notable aspects of the collection’s story, it was the overarching colour palette reminiscent of a summer sunset, the choice of materials and the fuss-free silhouettes that made us linger for a closer look. “I wanted to start the season with a clean slate, a ppalate cleanser of sorts,” explained the English designer as he walked w the press through the collection, starting with the first look: a full-white ensemble comprised of a bubble-hemmed leeather skirt and a bare-backed knit top. It set the tone for thhe rest of the looks that followed: lightweight leathers in su ummery hues and peek-a-boo knits, worn with a youthful dispposition. Silhouettes and styles were kept classic and minimaalistic, but skewed to the spirit of modern times; a more casual annd “street” take, if you’d like. Oversize blazers were worn with drawstring d trousers and a relaxed tank top; buttery leather hoo odies were casually thrown over almost anything; knit tops were paired with matching mini shorts that are all the rage this season.Eaasy, one-piece

won nders such as overalls and anklee-grazing shirt dresses sealed the deaal for an effortless wardrobe. Andrew reimagined r the brand’s iconic Vara pum mps with a sleeker, sharper shape in n monochromatic hues. Ch i iing it Christen i thheViva, he sent this new iconn down the t runway. With his eye firmly on the W futurre,Andreew still paid tribute to Ferragamo’s leather-making heritage with many separates craafted in the softest hide— an unu usual choice for a spring/summer collection, which typically features lighterr materials. Even the sunglasses were framed in the same leather that is usually used for shoes. With his emphasis on craftsmanship, he imbues W the coollection with depth, dimension and character. As he told Harper’s BAZAAR Australia:“My A moother was an executive at a computer company aand dressed up every day. My father was the upholsterer to the Queen. I was raised in an environment where there was a huge focus on technology on one side and artisanship on the othher. At that time, I didn’t realise the effect it had on me.It aligns with Ferragamo’s values: hi-tech meets high h craft.” Andrew went on to wax lyrical about the t intricacy of the weft and warp yarns in a dress specially hand-crocheted by a Florentine woman, how the ends of the crepe de chine ribbons of a Raschhel knit tank dress and top were deliberately left raw to ddraw attention to its handcrafted quality, and the hand-taccked leather sleeves of a tailored linen blazer. Presenting a collection that is modern and experimental, yet true to the brand’s roots,Andrew has made great strides in revolutionisinng a heritage leather house into a multi-faceted luxury maison for 2020 and beyond. ■ HARPER’S BAZAAR FEBRUARY 2020

STYLE

MURPHY’S LAW

Carolyn Murphy tells Windy Aulia about her life as a model, her secrets to success and her passions beyond fashion. Photographed by Hong Janghyun. Styled by Lee Jinsun ON THE MAKING OF A MODEL It was the summer of 1990 and my mother had put me in a finishing school because I was a tomboy. During the graduation ceremony, they made me look pretty and I was very grumpy about it. A lot of people from the modelling agencies were there and the next thing I knew, I was going to Paris. I was only 16 and my parents let me go only if I could live in the house of the agent. I had never been away from my family before this. I was miserable. Long story short, I cried so much as I couldn’t understand the industry. They wanted me to wear short skirts and tights, and that wasn’t my thing. I hung out a lot at Les Halles, which was one of the roughest areas in Paris. I wouldn’t say that fashion really set in for me until the early ’90s in New York. I was still trying to go to college then. I was intrigued by the grunge look of that era. It was how I dressed normally, and the music was what I was listening to, so the whole thing was really relatable. I saw Kate Moss in NewYork and I thought,“Oh, she’s shorter than I am.” And this was after I had been told that I wasn’t tall enough. So I thought if I plucked off my eyebrows, I would look weird and could work more! That was my first memory of trying to get into fashion: plucking my eyebrows and dressing grungy. UARY 2020

O N B E I N G A C R E AT I V E F O R C E Mario Testino once said at a shoot that I looked like actress Romy Schneider, whom I had never heard of. I started to learn about fashion through him and other photographers that I started to work with from 1993 onwards. My fondest memory in fashion was when I got the contract with Estée Lauder because I grew up with the brand and its products were part of my youth. At that point, I’d been modelling for a few years, but the contract made me feel like I’d arrived. And this was even after I had walked 17 shows during Milan Fashion Week, which was a really big deal. But I can’t say that I love doing shows anymore. I still get really nervous although I love the energy in the room, I love the process and what the designers created. Talking about fond memories, I love John Galliano—the performance and the set, they were just epic. And he gave us the freedom to move around, to act and even sit on people’s laps! Pretending I was in a ’20s cabaret was very exciting. I still love doing photo shoots. Having Steven Meisel show me references from old films and books, and telling me to watch Cat on a Hot Tin Roof—these parts of fashion make me feel the creativity and the artistry of the industry, which is what I love. did

IN HER WORDS MORNING CALM

I did a lot of shows in Milan around 1995 or 1996, and I booked the Max Mara campaign a year later with Meisel. It was such a big deal. I remember I was nervous about it. But the team made me look and feel beautiful. As a woman, I can relate to the sensibility of Max Mara. And as a consumer, there are pieces that I want to have in my wardrobe. I still have a Max Mara coat from the ’90s and I still wear the coat that was given to me from the campaign that I did in 2014. ON THE SECRET TO SUCCESS I have to give credit to the great team behind me for my long-lasting career. They believed in me and saw things in me that I didn’t see. I’ve been with my agency for 28 years. (She’s now 45.) There are not many models who do that. You have to find people that you really love because they’ll support you in whatever you do. It’s also really important to take some time off and take a step back. I don’t live and breathe fashion. I appreciate it and I respect it wholeheartedly, but I have so many other interests. It’s important to do things that you love outside of the industry. Because here’s a quirk about the fashion industry: People like to miss you. They love a comeback. I don’t know how many comebacks you can have, but they love a comeback.” n

I start my morning with a cup of hot water with some collagen, glutamine and probiotics. And then I let my dogs out and feed them. Meditation is important to me, even if it’s just five just to centre myself.

Iman graced the cover of Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore two years back (flanked by her equally handsome brothers, Irfan and Ikhsan) and continues to make waves as a fitspo model and influencer with major fashion and beauty brands. Here, BAZAAR talks to the dynamic mother-daughter duo on what makes their relationship so special, and how bonds are formed beyond good looks and a blessed genetic pool.

MAKEUP: MELISSA YEO USING SHISEIDO. HAIR: KEN HONG/EVOLVE SALON. MANICURE: AUDREY WEE. STYLING ASSISTANT: CHARMAINE TAN

Tell us about your relationship. Wendy Jacobs: When she was younger, Iman was very

shy and kept to herself. I was afraid that she and I wouldn’t have that special mother-daughter bond. But I’m so glad that that phase has passed; we hang out and talk about everything now. I am happy and grateful that she’s in my life. Iman Fandi: Being the only women in the family and working in the same industry, my mother and I are pretty close. We do girly things like getting our nails and hair done, go shopping, attend events together. Sometimes, she feels more like a big sister. Use three words to describe each other. Wendy: Dedicated, professional, goofy. Iman: Strong, loving, adaptable. In modelling and life, what are some of the most important things you’ve learned from her? Wendy: The industry has evolved tremendously from when

I first started. For social media and the fast-paced digital realm, I rely on Iman to guide me and help me with anything I’m not familiar with. That said, some principles stay the same: discipline, punctuality, appreciation and professionalism. Iman: My mother has always taught me to respect everyone on set, no matter what their title, and to be professional at all times. Coming from a different generation of models, she taught me how the industry used to work and instilled some aspects of the “old school” approach in me.The modelling industry is competitive and ever-changing; we’ve got to adapt and reinvent ourselves constantly, but still remain true to ourselves.

How would you describe each other’s style? Wendy: Unlike me, who prefers matching sets, Iman is very

versatile and is able to put stylish ensembles together effortlessly— she even looks good at the gym! Iman: Her style is chic, timeless, comfortable. We are very different yet similar at the same time. Growing up, I’ve seen her use pink and red lipsticks, and now I find myself trying out the same colours too.We both like experimenting with new styles; I don’t limit myself to certain trends. I think I got that from her. I love borrowing her shoes as she’s got a great collection of boots and heels. On the subject of great accessories, you both carry the Fendi Peekaboo. Complete the sentence: the Fendi Peekaboo is... Wendy: ...the perfect everyday bag! Iman: ...equal parts stylish and versatile. While the large version

is great for busy days, I’d wear the mini version as a cross-body bag for a hands-free day out in town.

How did this shoot go? Wendy: We had a great time! There were lots of smiles and

laughter. I loved that we could just be ourselves. Iman: I have not done a shoot with my mother for a while now, so it was really fun to have the opportunity again. We both have quite similar working habits, so it was quick, easy and comfortable.

On Wendy: Cotton blazer and matching pants; suede Mini Peekaboo bag. On Iman: Leather jacket and matching pants; leather Peekaboo bag OPPOSITE: On Wendy: Cotton blazer; cotton t-shirt; silk skirt; Karligraphy boots; leather Peekaboo bag. On Iman: Silk shirt and matching skirt; leather boots; leather Peekaboo bag. All clothes and accessories worn throughout the shoot are by Fendi

BEL LA D ONNA Screen goddess Monica Bellucci is proof that beauty and allure has no age. Photographed by Thiemo Sander. Styled by Barbara Baumel

BOLD BEAUTY

Monica Bellucci wears Cartier’s Magnitude high jewellery, which showcases the Maison’s flair for experimental design in the unexpected pairing of precious gems with ornamental stones. BREAKING BOUNDARIES Now 56, Bellucci is still a regular fixture on both international magazine covers and the cinematic world. Age has not diminished her luminous beauty or ripe sensuality. Entering her 40s and 50s has not stopped her from popping up on “Sexiest of the Year” lists, skinny-dipping in a swimming pool for Paris Match in 2016, or walking the runway for Dolce&Gabbana’s spring 2019 show during Milan Fashion Week. She has defied the career trajectory of her acting peers, taking on parts that are typically proffered to nubile starlets half her age, the most notable being the role of 007’s love interest in the 2015 film Spectre. When director Sam Mendes approached her, she thought at first that he was considering her as a replacement for Judi Dench, who played Bond’s steely boss, M. Never did she imagine that at 50, she would be heating up the screen opposite Daniel Craig. For now, she still holds the distinction of being the oldest Bond girl, or “Bond woman”, as she calls it. 68

HARPER’S BAZAAR FEBRUARY 2020

OLDER BUT BETTER With age comes experience, and Bellucci believes that that has etched another kind of beauty on her face and body, one that transcends the ephemerality of youth. It has even helped her get under the skin of some of the most complex characters she has played. Shaped by the choices she has made in her art, relationships and life, Bellucci is truly a woman of many facets: a talented actress with a wide-ranging filmography, a muse to designers and luxury maisons such as Cartier, a beauty icon, a doting mother—all in one fabulous package.

BY JOYCE LIM. PHOTOGRAPHY: COURTESY OF CARTIER

added that she was much happier than when she was younger. “You have to discover who you are, who you’re going to be, there are so many insecurities.Today, I know the things that I need, the things that I can live without.” What she can live without, in case you’re wondering, is hitting the gym in the wee hours of the morning and watching everything she eats, even though her profession as an actress and model pretty much demands that she has to look a certain way. Yet, the Italian bombshell appears to take a nonchalant attitude to such expectations. “I accept who I am and that perfection doesn’t exist,” she has declared.

BENEATH THE SURFACE Although it is undeniable that she struck it lucky in the genetic roulette, Bellucci has pointed out that her looks would not have helped her sustain a career spanning three decades. “As Oscar Wilde said, ‘Beauty is just five minutes long if you don’t have anything else to sustain that curiosity.’ I don’t think that I would have made this kind of career if I were just beautiful. Directors don’t call you for your beauty but for your talent.” To her, growing older means not so much a loss of beauty but mortality—her greatest fear is not being there to see her children grow up. (Family has always come first for Bellucci and in interview after interview, she continually asserts that everything she does revolves around her two daughters, Deva, 16, and Leonie, 10, with ex-husband, French actor Vincent Cassel.) “There’s nothing you can do about getting older, you just have to deal with it,” she has said. Acupuncture and facial massages help to maintain her youthful mien, and she credits pilates and swimming for keeping her fit and trim.

The moon never ceases to inspire Hermès, and its new, limited-edition Arceau Ronde des Heures is the latest watch to pay tribute to it through a poetic approach to telling time. The batonshaped hand points to the minute while the rotating carousel of sloping Arabic numerals indicates the hour when it passes over the mother-of-pearl crescent moon—the number that touches its lower tip represents the hour. Only 300 pieces of the watch, which features a bezel set with black spinels and a matching polished alligator skin strap, have been made.

leviating human-wildlife con l a n i flict, conservationist ork w r named by Role r he aranth was x as o o ne of its Laureates in the F thi K f s o d r r Enterpri i se. lex Awa Kr o R 9 1 armaine Ho 20 By Ch

PHOTOGRAPHY: YATHIN S KRISHNAPPA

Tell us more about the work you do. I’ve spent the last 21 years being a scientist, a conservationist and an educator. Four years ago,Wild Seve was founded to manage the conflict between humans and wildlife. It’s as simple as a toll-free number that people can call when they have a leopard on their roof,or an elephant destroying their crops. Our field staff will look at the damage to build the documentation and file the claim to submit to the government for compensation. While we were doing this, I also noticed that the kids living on the edges of our wildlife parks were either indifferent to the fact that they live next to one of the world’s highest population of tigers and elephants,or lived in fear.So we designed a conservation education programme, Wild Shaale, which we bring to rural village schools across India. We get the children excited about wildlife and build empathy. We also provide tips on what they should do if they are in a conflict situation. Both programmes can be implemented in any country with big animals. What was the moment that you decided Wild Seve was something that needed to exist? The first 10 years of my career was spent on getting recognised for doing good research, but frustration started to creep in.Does the science really matter? Does it change reality? Because the problems continued to persist. That’s when I decided that the science has to translate to change. I spent about seven years travelling across India, speaking with people. I realised that we have very high densities of people living right next to our wildlife parks and it gave rise to serious problems. We are fortunate that the Indian government has set up a compensation fund to help people. It just wasn’t delivering its services as efficiently as it could. Compensation is not the only way to go [about this], but it’s one way to, at least in the short term, stop people from killing the animals because they’re frustrated and angry. That’s when I said we’ve got to start coming up with simple solutions that can assist millions of people and not just five people in one place.

How has life changed for you since you were named a Rolex Awards for Enterprise Laureate last year? For me, the most valuable part is the Rolex community. You have a set of people you can reach out to and do new exciting things with for the rest of your life. Has the award made a tangible difference to your work? It has definitely put it on another level in terms of visibility and awareness, and I hope this will bring about collaborations and partnerships in other parts of the world. It’s a working model. We’ve tried and tested it, fixed all the issues—especially the school programme—so we can move it.We’re building more curriculum because we want to work in places where there are different animals. You can’t be talking about tigers and elephants to kids who see wolves and bears. You have to adapt it and customise it, and that takes a little bit of time. But overall, it’s very doable. ■

A massage that boosts microcirculation follows, after which a customised, concentrated dose of glow-boosting, lifting or hydrating elixirs are delivered directly into the skin. This is topped off with LED light therapy and yet another round of SK-II skincare products.

BEST REJUVENATING FACIAL

BEESPOKE HONEY

$425.86 for 90 minutes, Porcelain Spa The queen bee of facials, this harnesses the rejuvenating prowess of honey to re-energise and brighten skin. What to expect: a gentle exfoliating shiatsu face massage with almond honey scrub; Electrophoresis Cryotherapy, which pushes the nutrient-rich Bee Propolis extract deep into the epidermis to boost microcirculation, cellular oxygenation and detoxification; the Milk+Honey Firming Masque and Revital Eyes Multi-Peptide Silk Mask; and finally, red light therapy to encourage collagen production and skin healing.

$180 for 60 minutes, Facia Ginza Developed with a team of osteopathic doctors, this Japanese facial treatment is like a deep-tissue massage for the face. Kneading, rolling and pinching techniques are used to boost blood circulation, engage—and strengthen—facial muscles, and encourage lymphatic drainage for an overall reshaping and rejuvenating effect, from forehead to chin. Promising an instantly more contoured, symmetrical mien, this also reportedly helps boost the skin’s cellular activity, for healthierlooking complexions in the long run.

BEST SOOTHING FACIAL

Salmon DNA extract, also known as PDRN, is slated to be the next big ingredient, thanks to its compatibility with human skin. Working with the skin’s natural rejuvenation and healing processes, it stimulates microcirculation and new tissue growth to repair damaged skin.

ONSEN-MIST CALMING INFUSION

$188 for 45 minutes, Skin Inc Harnessing the healing powers of onsen waters, this facial is meant for skin that is often exposed to the sun, or is sensitive, dehydrated or blemishprone. Nourishing Japanese onsen thermal water is used to cool and moisturise skin, while a Blue LED Anti-Pore Power Fix Mask is combined with the Licorice Serum to calm any redness caused by inflammation and sun irritation.

BEST TIGHTENING FACIAL

KOREAN NEEDLE-FREE FACE THREADLIFT

$500 for 90 minutes, Kosme Aesthetics Yes, there is such a thing as a non-invasive facelift. While this Hifu (high-intensity focused ultrasound)-meets-facelift hybrid involves surgical threads, they function as markers rather than sutures. Laid out on top of the skin, they indicate where the aesthetician will apply a collagen concentrate that will then be delivered deep into the skin via the heat from the Hifu machine. And yes, if you’re looking at getting that coveted V-shaped face, this one’s great for that too.

SPECIALISED SOLUTIONS High-tech, high-performance clinical treatments that zoom in on every skin concern

BEST ACNE-REDUCING FACIAL

BEST BRIGHTENING FACIAL

$737 for 60 minutes, Privé Clinic At the heart of this facial is polynucleotide, a biopolymer molecule highly compatible with the human body. Delivered into the skin via a series of micro injections, it reportedly helps repair damaged skin cells, boost collagen synthesis, reduce sebum production and even out the skin’s moisture-oil balance. The miniscule punctures in the skin also trigger its natural wound-healing response, boosting cellular turnover. Some light swelling may appear post-treatment, but it goes away within 24 hours. Meanwhile, skin is visibly suppler, and looks smoother and healthier.

$1,888 for five sessions, The Aesthetics Medical Clinic Combining two laser machines—Q Switch and yellow laser—that work in tandem to give you radiant, glowy skin, this also removes dirt, dead skin cells, oil and superficial hair, so skin is not only brightened, but also clearer and cleaner. The laser also helps to regulate oil production and reduce pigmentation, while the potent 80 percent stem cell-derived serum delivers proteins, growth factors and cytokines into skin to help boost regeneration and repair.

The eyes may be the windows to the soul, but the eyebrows are an integral part of the architecture. Immaculately groomed brows frame the eyes and highlight your features. Well-defined brows can also visually lift droopy eyes, and make you appear more alert and fresh. Even sans makeup, neat brows can confer instant polish. Getting a shapely bod the quick way is often a case of squeezing yourself into some Spanx to fake that sleek silhouette. Did you know that the skin around the eyes is about six times thinner than that on the rest of the face? This area also has fewer sebaceous glands that produce sebum, the natural lubricant that keeps skin moist. Add to that the thousands of repetitive muscle movements that occur in the eye area daily, and it’s no wonder that it is often one of the first to show signs of ageing. And while laugh lines are indicative of plenty of happy times, they can age you—never a good thing.

This generates a pulsating pressure that promotes lymphatic drainage and reportedly increases cellular membrane permeability, so nutrients are more effectively transported between and within cells. BEST BRIGHTENING FAC I A L ( M E N ’ S )

WHAT IT IS

Porcelain’s CO2 Skin Renewal face treatment uses a method that is less aggressive than other treatment modalities yet delivers maximum results. It works by creating an abundance of carbon dioxide on skin, triggering the Bohr effect, which causes red blood cells to release oxygen. This rush of oxygen floods skin cells, stimulates microcirculation and improves cellular function.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The treatment begins with a thorough cleansing. Next, the therapist applies a layer of specialised gel all over the face before laying a carboxy sheet on top. When the sheet comes

into contact with this gel, carbon dioxide is released; you may feel a warm, tingling sensation that lasts a few minutes. This is followed by a cryoprobe facial massage that lowers the surface temperature of the skin while infusing it with a customised concoction of antioxidants and skinloving ingredients. The cryoprobe also emits microcurrents to enhance the penetration of active ingredients. As a last step, your skin is treated to a Hydrocare Bio-cellulose Mask, which contains humectants that replenish moisture. It is left on for 15 minutes before specially chosen skincare products are applied.

WHO IT IS FOR

Suitable for all skin types, but particularly beneficial for dull and tired complexions, this facial is perfect for those seeking immediate results. Those with drier skin might experience a more intense tingling sensation. For mature skin, the Hydrocare Bio-cellulose Mask will be swapped for a Honey Milk Mask that has greater moisturising and healing properties. In just one hour, you can see improvement in your skin texture-your complexion becomes noticeably brighter, more even-toned and smoother.

CO2 Skin Renewal ($298.50 for 60 minutes) is available at Porcelain Origins, #04-48 Paragon (tel: 6850 5161); Porcelain Signatures, #01-02 Guoco Tower (tel: 6386 5388); Porcelain Aesthetics, #03-13 Orchard Gateway (tel: 6844 9660); and Porcelain Face Spa, 15 Cantonment Road (tel: 6227 9692).

We all know the importance of building a robust skincare regime that involves thorough cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. With age, many women—and men—start to think about supplementing this basic skincare regimen with advanced aesthetic treatments. If you’re looking for a medical facial treatment to supercharge your self-care, PicoWay Resolve may just be the one for you.

VERSATILITY IS KEY

B E S T R E J U V E N AT I N G FAC I A L

Designed to reach different layers of the skin, PicoWay Resolve can be used to tackle multiple skin conditions, such as hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and acne scars, and even remove tattoos. It uses picolaser technology, which fires rapid and ultra-short energy pulses to break up pigmentation more effectively. These quick bursts of energy also mean that less heat is emitted during the treatment, which translates to less pain and a faster recovery. Compare this to other types of rejuvenating lasers that work by delivering heat energy; with the latter, there is a possibility of overheating and injuring the surrounding tissues, and as a result, involve a higher level of discomfort and pain, not to mention a longer period of downtime. With PicoWay Resolve, each quick pulse of laser energy delivers a photoacoustic shockwave to the skin, breaking up the melanin clusters that cause uneven pigmentation, without damaging the top layer of skin or surrounding tissues. It can target a variety of pigmentation problems, ranging from small, surface-level spots to

deep-seated discoloration. At the same time, it triggers collagen synthesis, which improves the look of large pores, pimple scars and wrinkles. If these are your skin woes, PicoWay Resolve could be the solution you need.

QUICKER AND SHORTER TREATMENT

Each session is fuss-free and quick, taking only about 20 minutes, which makes it the perfect lunchtime fix. While you may experience some redness, this usually subsides within a day or so, and you can go about your daily activities. Slight improvements in overall skin texture can be expected just a few days after the first session, although the treatment should be repeated every six to eight weeks for at least four sessions for optimal results.

PicoWay Resolve ($650 per session) is available at Dr Kevin Chua Medical & Aesthetics, #03-05 International Building (tel: 6694 6700). For more information, visit kevinchua.com.sg.

What do flaunting strappy espadrilles and snuggling in bed with your significant other have in common? Having soft, smooth, pretty feet make both that much better. So whether it’s a pretty pedicure or a sole renewal that you need, trust the team at Nail Palace to take the extra step with tender loving care.

BEST PEDICURE

GOING THE DISTANCE

Unlike your traditional pedicures that, more often than not, just focus on the toenails, the Classic Pedicure here takes a more holistic approach, incorporating steps that make you feel like you’re at a foot spa. Your treatment starts off with a foot soak, to which the therapist may add an antifungal pill, should you have any infections in need of treating. The warm soak helps to cleanse feet, and soften rough spots around the heels and balls of your feet, which are then gently but thoroughly exfoliated. You can also add a Sole Renewal Treatment that helps to smooth out thickened, callused areas, and repair dry and cracked heels.

PRIMED AND PAINTED

The work on your toenails begins with pain-free, precise cuticle trimming, then careful cleaning, cutting and buffing to avoid ingrown nails, leaving them shiny and healthylooking. The nail technician then delivers a quick but

effective massage to condition the skin and relax the limbs as you pick out your perfect shade of lacquer.

BEST FOOT FORWARD

With 21 outlets conveniently distributed across the island, Nail Palace is often able to accommodate last-minute bookings. Its nail technicians also boast swift fingers that complete the pedicure session in 60 minutes tops, even for more elaborate nail art. Speed, however, doesn’t affect the quality, with paint jobs here remaining vibrant and chip-free for at least two weeks—something that doesn’t happen often for nongel nails. It reflects the level of service and care you can expect at this 18-year-old salon chain, where attention is lavished on your feet and nails to ensure they are primped to perfection.

Classic Pedicure (from $42.80 for 60 minutes) is available at Nail Palace, #B1-64 Ang Mo Kio Hub (tel: 6555 2526); #03-01 Bugis+ (tel: 6634 0018); #02-17 Eastpoint Mall (tel: 6789 7672); #02-33 Junction 8 (tel: 6397 5901); and #03-26C Jurong Point (tel: 6794 7953). Living in the humid tropics has its benefits when it comes to the skin—we don’t lose as much moisture as those living in cold climates or arid zones, which means our skin tends to be more resilient, and less prone to wrinkling and sagging. There’s a catch though: Living on the equator exposes us to 12 hours of sunlight year-round, increasing the risk of hyperpigmentation. Add to that overactive sebum glands, which can lead to congested skin that breaks out easily, and we’ve got a problem.

NO PAIN, MORE GAIN

THREE-IN-ONE ACTION Combining the benefits of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), E-light (which incorporates radio BEST ANTI-BLEMISH frequency) and SDL (Super FAC I A L Diode Laser) technologies, the SPECTRA+ IDPL device uses twin flash lamps that allow the light energy to cover a wider surface area for a more efficient process. The device is also said to allow the light to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin to target the pigment-producing cells while dispersing sunspots and freckles on the surface. Instead of sharp pulses of light energy, the temperature of the treatment area is gradually increased for a comfortable and safe experience.

To combat these issues, many women (and men) are willing to try radical solutions. While there are several aesthetic procedures that are effective in preventing and managing hyperpigmentation and acne, some of them can be rather aggressive and require downtime. If you have a low pain threshold, Beaute Hub’s SPECTRA IDPL Pigmentation Treatment may be an alternative. Using the SPECTRA+ IDPL device, it combines multiple technologies to target hyperpigmentation, minimise the appearance of acne scars and refine skin texture.

SUPERCHARGED RESULTS In addition to the SPECTRA+ IDPL device, this facial treatment uses tranexamic acid, a powerful anti-spot ingredient, to enhance its effectiveness. Also included in the treatment is a dark-spot-correcting step that utilises vitamin C, another five-star ingredient that helps inhibit the excessive production of melanin, a pigment that causes brown spots to form on the skin. It takes just one session to see a noticeably brighter skin tone and more refined skin texture.

SPECTRA IDPL Pigmentation Treatment is available at all Beaute Hub outlets. For more information, please call 6735 6883 or visit beautehub.com.

It is a dilemma that previous generations did not she says. eo light on my ’re on a Zoom chin is always ame thing on skin back in a faux nip-and-tuck to excavate the jawline I seemed to have lost 18 months ago. Prior to this, I’d never really worried about my neck—I have plenty of other issues. But when you turn 55 or so, your neck (loose skin, jowls, marionette lines, muscle bands, salivary glands) drops one Sunday evening during Big Little Lies. Then it’s all anyone talks about: what to do, who’s done it, how it works and how soon you can book it. A friend in LA recently had her neck done. I FaceTime her two days after to see the reality. She looks puffy and bruised, and shows me the staples on the back of her head. Staples. She was cavalier about the surgery before but not after, admitting that it was “a much bigger deal” than she had realised, including five hours in the OR. I keep asking, if it was just her neck, why did she have staples on the back of her head? She doesn’t know. I go with her to Pasadena for her post-op appointment to ask her plastic surgeon, Dr Michael Schwartz—and have my own consultation. Dr Schwartz says he performed both a necklift and a facelift, explaining that for most people, a necklift alone does not remedy the disappearing-jawline problem. “A necklift sounds more minimal, but you’re left with the same jawline,” he says. In Beverly Hills, I visit plastic surgeon Dr Gregory Mueller in the hopes of finding a less invasive way to solve my sagging. His minimally invasive Ellevate procedure creates a permanent suture support for the “bands and glands” that drop as we age. “It’s like a corset,” he says. “The suture is threaded from behind one ear to the other, using a 1mm needle, so there are no incisions, only needle punctures.” Dr Mueller combines this with collagen-stimulating radio frequency FaceTite and lipo (cost: US$8,000 to $14,000, with bruising for up to 10 days). I’m a candidate for Ellevate, but he says I‘ll need actual surgery as well to deal with the excess skin. Total cost: US$24,700, with two weeks of recovery. Still on my quest for an easier alternative, I meet with Dr Haideh Hirmand, a plastic surgeon in New York. “The neck is the holy grail of facial rejuvenation,” she says. “We don’t have the non-surgical answer to it yet”, meaning that the non-surgical technologies for the face-suture lift, FaceTite, Ultherapy-don’t work as well on the neck, unless it’s at

It seems nothing is simple (or straightforward) when you head south of the face. By Martha McCully a super-early stage. Creams can be helpful in maintaining skin integrity, but they won’t do what a doctor can do. I’d also heard about Kybella, an injectable that dissolves fat in a double chin, but experts say it wouldn’t fix my neck issues. For the first signs of ageing, Hirmand offers a face-and-neck suture lift (US$4,500 to $6,500, with “minimal recovery and less bruising than injectables,” she says), or the radio frequency NeckTite, with a seven- to 10-day recovery and visible results after four months (from US$6,500). Ultherapy, an ultrasound treatment that works via heat stimulation, is another buzzy procedure. But doctors say that you’ll see a 20 percent improvement at best (after three months). It costs US$3,500 to $6,500 and needs to be done every year or two. “You’d benefit most from a lower-face and neck lift,” Hirmand says. I’m relieved these doctors have confirmed that I’m not just imagining it: My face and neck are indeed falling. As it turns out, you can’t really disconnect your neck, jawline and face. My issue isn’t just my neck after all, but my lower face too. If there’s loose skin, jowls and marionette lines, a facelift with a necklift is recommended, but unlike our mothers’ lifts, they’re performed more strategically and look subtler. Three doctors’ visits later, I’m convinced -and planning my return to Instagram. n HARPER’S BAZAAR FEBRUARY 2020

awford announced she was intending to move on from modelling ahead of her 50th birthday three years ago, it made front cover news. Such is the power of this beauty with the trademark mole. The rumours turned out to be somewhat exaggerated. She’s back on our cover looking as fit and fabulous as she ever was. She is possibly the first of her supermodel coterie (ie Supers Naomi, Christy, Claudia and Linda et al) to have successfully parlayed her modelling fame into Cindy Inc, building an empire ranging from skincare to home design. The matriarch of her own modelling clan—her two children, Presley, 20, and Kaia, 18, are fashion superstars themselves—now has the freedom to pick and choose her projects. The OG Super takes a few minutes out of her busy schedule to answer our questions. Tell us about your first cover shoot for Harper’s BAZAAR Singapore. It was in December 2005. I was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in my role as an OMEGA ambassador. The watch brand asked me to do a shoot as part of my schedule there. I remember arriving at Carcosa Seri Negara and I instantly connected with Kenneth Goh, the editor-in-chief, as well as Simon Upton, the photographer. It was such an elegant story and we loved shooting together! How do you keep looking and feeling fabulous after more than 30 years in the business? Thanks—I do try! I exercise, try to eat right and take care of my skin, but the most important thing is having gratitude and doing things that make you feel good: like living your work, connecting with friends and family, and giving back.

What is your advice to new models? This is such an exciting time in the modelling industry and I have a front row seat watching my daughter Kaia’s career. Some of my advice is the same as it would be for any job—be on time, be prepared and stay off your phone! But specifically for modelling, authenticity is even more important now than ever.As the fashion industry embraces diversity, social media gives everyone a platform to speak their truth and share what’s important to them. Is there one thing that you want to forge in this new decade? My focus will be more and more on balance and being of service. My children are nearly grown, but I know I still have a lot to give. Finding new ways to share my gifts is what excites me! Who are the fabulous women who inspire you? Who is your real-life hero? More than anyone else, my mother inspires me and is my hero. She lost a child, my little brother Jeff, to leukemia and also went through a bad divorce from my father. But she remains the type of woman who chooses to see the best in everything and everyone.

For actress Elisabeth Moss, a little bit of mystery is always in fashion. By Christine Lennon. Photographed by Yulia Gorbachenko. Styled by Miguel Enamorado Elisabeth Moss’s face, which is pale, line-free and animated, reveals everything she wants you to know and little else. Even in the ridiculously dim early evening light of the bar at the Sunset Tower hotel in Los Angeles, her blue eyes are bright with attention. “I find that I’m very, very good at, like, I guess some people would call it compartmentalising,” says Moss, 37, with a laugh and a lilt in her voice that makes that admission sound like an apology. Moss, who introduces herself as Lizzie, has arrived fresh from a meeting with the writers of The Handmaid’s Tale, the dystopian Hulu drama that she both produces and stars in. Her shoulder-length, bleached-blonde hair is in a pretty tangle, and she’s wearing a black leather moto jacket, a white t-shirt, and trackpants. “I’m really good at turning it off, going home and texting my friends, having a glass of wine and putting it aside,” she tells me after ordering a Moscow mule and sinking into the cushions around a corner table. “It’s not unconscious. I need to be able to do that to treat my work with joy and enthusiasm.” Anyone who has seen Moss as Peggy Olson, the advertising copywriter who repeatedly crashed into a succession of low glass ceilings on Mad Men, or June, the enslaved procreator–slash–agent of chaos on Handmaid’s, knows her face and all the quicksilver emotions it conveys. She can communicate more with a raised eyebrow than most people can with a paragraph of dialogue. In Moss’s latest film, The Invisible Man, a modern retelling of the H.G. Wells sci-fi novel of the same name, that canvas of a face is on full display, panicked and paranoid as she plays a woman terrorised by an abusive ex-boyfriend who no one else can see. It’s worth noting that many of the characters in the Moss oeuvre seem to be fighting against a pervasive destructive masculine presence, but in The Invisible Man, this theme is anything but nuanced. “It’s that universal feeling of not being seen, of not having a voice, the fear of being invisible,” she explains.“We live in a patriarchy. If you’re telling a story about a woman, part of it will be about living in that patriarchy.” Moss also has zero fear around playing the anti-hero. “I’ve had to remind people who love June about all who have died

either directly because of her or because she has let them die,” she says. “June can be shitty. She can be selfish. She makes the wrong decision all the time. She cheats on her husband. She’s not the best heroine a lot of the time. Then again, she is so human, and so us, and tough and strong, and she does have this love for her daughter. People have many different facets. All the good stories are very murky. Big grey areas are more interesting.” Moss, who was born in LA to musician parents and raised in Laurel Canyon along with her younger brother, started acting at the age of six. “I don’t remember not wanting to do it,” she says. “I was a dancer at the same time; I always loved performing. I loved ballet. But I kind of ended up choosing acting because it seemed like a better choice long-term. My mum just kept asking me, ‘Do you still want to do it? Do you want to audition?’And I kept saying,‘Yes.’ It was really that simple.” Moss’s taste for complex characters was evident early on, dating back to 1998 when she was cast, at 16, in Girl, Interrupted as Polly “Torch” Clark, a teenager disfigured by self-inflicted burn wounds. The film, about a group of girls in a psychiatric hospital, starred Winona Ryder and then-newcomer Angelina Jolie, who won an Oscar for her performance.“I remember it all very vividly,” Moss says.“There I was with Winona, who was already a legend in her 20s. She was so nice to me.Angelina wasn’t necessarily the Angelina Jolie we know now, but everyone knew who she was. She was still this force. I didn’t talk to her really, but it was more of a character thing. We’re friendly now. Clea DuVall was in it, and now she’s in Handmaid’s.We were shooting in this mental hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and it was so cold. It was this really fun, amazing experience.” On screen, Moss can appear raw and exposed, but off-screen, she’s guarded. “You have to be careful,” she says. “Once the information is out there, you can’t take it back.” She offers Holly Hunter, her co-star in the 2013 miniseries Top of the Lake, as an example of someone who has managed to retain an air of mystery. “Broadcast News is one of my favourite movies, and she’s one of the coolest people, but I don’t know anything about her. I think she lives in NewYork?” Moss says.“Meryl Streep does it well. I was listening to an Oprah podcast where she was interviewing Julia Roberts, and here you have arguably the biggest female star in the world, and she has managed to maintain a good amount of privacy. I don’t think it has to do with your level of stardom but in how you conduct your life.” Moss, though, appreciates the impulse to delve into the lives of actors. “I totally understand why people want to know that stuff,” she says. “I see a story about Olivia Colman, whom I love, and I want to devour it. I dissect it, like,‘Where does she live? What does her kitchen look like?’ I want to see Olivia’s kitchen. But I never want to get to the point where someone’s watching something I’m doing and thinking about what my kitchen looks like.” From a neighbouring table at The Tower Bar, Jameela Jamil and Tracee Ellis Ross wave hello, and Jamil scrambles over to introduce herself before showering Moss with compliments. A producer comes by to thank her for a Q&A session she’s attending that evening. Moss greets everyone with the same wide grin.“This place really is the belly of the beast,” she says with a shrug. “You don’t come here if you don’t want to be seen.” n

Ingredient-driven plates take centre stage at Preludio, a sleek, contemporary restaurant that unfolds a new culinary theme every 12 to 18 months. Executive Chef Fernando Arévalo serves what he calls an “author’s cuisine”, where the ingredients’ provenance meld with his experiences to result in unconventional but well-balanced flavours that will keep you both guessing and marvelling at what’s placed on the table. The 56-seater debuted its dining tome with a “Monochrome” chapter featuring dishes presented in starkly minimalist forms—think Iberico pork with whiffs of coffee and port, and a pure white Strawberry Milkshake dessert—and its new concept “Time”, starting this month, promises to continue an intrigue that you can both unravel together. Lunch consists of four- and seven-course sets from $58, while a Complete eight-course dinner menu costs $238 per person. Those feeling less peckish can go for the Abridged dinner of six courses at $188. Visit preludio.sg.

O O 20 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

24 AUGUST – 23 SEPTEMBER

Quite rightly, you’ll feel pleased with yourself for having developed some splendid ideas. However, if you talk about them endlessly, everyone will tire of listening. So give your plans a greater chance of success by saying little about them until they’re well under way. A certain person loves the kind of surprises you often produce.

Have you been waiting too long to tackle a delicate or difficult topic? If so, it’s because you’ve wanted to appear sensible and thoughtful. But you can’t afford to be seen as someone who indulges in pussy-footing around. You’re reaching a point where you really must feel brave enough to say what needs to be said.

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

Accept that a recurring dread or concern must be confronted head-on; refuse to go along with the suggestion that you should ignore it. Revisit the situation and sift through the facts until you’re convinced you’ve nothing to fear. One individual can be of enormous help.

21 APRIL – 21 MAY

Discussions about how much you’re expected to support loved ones cannot be delayed any longer. Make sure you allow a Mercury-Uranus connection to help you state your views on the matter without seeming mean and penny-pinching. Others might be surprised there’s a limit to how much you can help them, but they must face facts.

Not everyone will agree with your plans involving foreign shores or individuals you barely know. But don’t be dissuaded from broadening your horizons after a period during which you felt forced to do the same old thing. Find the courage to respond to fresh breezes about to blow in your direction.

24 SEPTEMBER – 23 OCTOBER

You’re right to adopt a conscientious attitude towards your commitments to the home or family. However, in the second half of February, a Jupiter-Neptune link might persuade you to become so self-sacrificing that nothing else matters apart from the well-being of others. And that isn’t true. You count for something too.

24 OCTOBER – 22 NOVEMBER

People will invite you to participate with them in something that smacks of freedom and daring. But you must be able to trust them and their judgment. It should feel as though they want you to be enriched by the experience. But if you have any doubts about their intentions or motivations, you must steer clear.

22 MAY – 21 JUNE

23 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

Gossip or misinformation revolving around your profession or reputation will prove irritating, but it needn’t be a deal-breaker as far as important negotiations are concerned. With Mercury retrograde from mid-February for three weeks or so, you must rise above the actions of mischief-makers who are not powerful enough to stop you in your tracks.

A touch of luxury you bring to an occasion meant to be enjoyed by all may be perceived as a waste of money. Pluto tussling withVenus towards the end of the month means you must be sure you can justify your spending. Bickering about finances can be demoralising, but somebody’s on your case. Be prepared.

24 JULY – 23 AUGUST

Much as you might want to bring vim and vigour to a joint project, you should curb your enthusiasm in front of loved ones.Yes, it will be gratifying to be perceived as a magnanimous human being, but you wouldn’t want to deal in broken promises. Before making 22 JUNE – 23 JULY 22 DECEMBER – 20 JANUARY grand-sounding statements, be sure of your ground. Heed the warnings of someone suggesting Try not to be irritated by those wanting you to you’re talking in a rather cavalier way. You’ll know you’re remain calm with regard to certain activities. You’ll putting on a front to avoid letting your nervousness want to be where the action is during the coming show. But at least make it obvious that you’re aware weeks, but that’s no reason to take chances on of how things could go wrong and you’re taking the unfamiliar territory. And there is one rather structured necessary steps to ensure that any fallout will be minimal. area of your life that really does deserve your attention.
