Hollywood stars including Jennifer Lopez, Scarlett Johansson and Nicole Kidman dazzled on a red carpet awash with colour and couture, but it was the Brits who grabbed the spotlight – and the headlines – as home-grown stars including Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Colman bagged the night’s big prizes. Olivia again reigned supreme as she won her third Golden Globe in four years, scooping Best Actress in a TV Drama for her role as the Queen in Netflix hit The Crown. “I had money on this not happening,” she said on stage at LA’s Beverly Hilton in a red custom-made Emilia Wickstead gown. She also admitted she had got a little “boozy” beforehand because she was so sure she

She also vowed to auction her Ralph & Russo couture black lace suit to raise funds to fight bushfires in Australia.

I couldn’t because every woman I stand next to they say I’m dating and it’d just be awkward,” he quipped in front of the star-studded audience that included his ex-wife Jennifer.

It was the only prize on the night for the Netflix drama, which received six nominations – more than any other film. The glittering ceremony was hosted for a fifth time by Briton Ricky Gervais, who teased stars including Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio and joked about the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, leaving Tom Hanks – who received the Cecil B DeMille award – open-mouthed with shock. She was in her element splashing around in the surf with her dad, who helped her catch waves on her bodyboard while Zara strolled in the sand holding 19-month-old Lena, miles away from gloomy January weather in the UK, where in her absence last week she received a six-month driving ban for speeding near her Cotswolds home. “Mia loves swimming,” Zara said. “Of course, the climate allows you to be able to go swimming all day, every day. When we first took her to Australia, she was 11 months old. We kick-started her love of water.” Mike, 41, added: “She swims twice a week at home, with lessons. If she’s anywhere near a pool, she’d be in there all day. And that came from Australia, when we went for six weeks when she was three and

njoying a fun-filled holiday in Australia, Zara and Mike Tindall couldn’t stop smiling as they made the most of their time in the sun with their two daughters. The family looked happy and relaxed as they larked around on Sur fers Paradise beach on Queensland’s Gold Coast. In fact, the couple feel so at home in Australia, where they first met in 2003, they’re considering moving to the country. Asked by an Australian magazine whether they would ever contemplate the move, equestrian Zara, 38, replied: “Probably not while I’m still competing. It would be a little bit hard commuting. “But after that,” she added. “Yes, I think if an opportunity came up, we’d definitely think about it.” Her former rugby union star husband added: ‘I just think the people over in Australia are so laid back and they have good banter. RACING START TO 2020 The couple have been regular visitors to Australia since 2012, when Zara became an ambassador for Magic Millions Racing Women, an initiative run by Australia’s leading thoroughbred auction house to encourage more women to own racehorses. Such a good laugh and a great start to fundraising for the firefighter’s fund!” Mike wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of him and Zara. This was the first time the couple have taken both their daughters to the event with them and it was clear how much they were enjoying being parents of two. “I think it’s superb,” Mike said in the interview. “Mia is a fantastic bundle of energy and that challenges you as well and keeps it interesting. Lena is just starting to find her feet, but we’ve enjoyed every minute of it. “You hope that’s what kids do to you and it’s been great.” And he added: “I do think that girls look to their dads to be able to get away with things.” H REPORT: TRACY SCHAVERIEN

I quite enjoy it though. “Early January is bleak [back home in the UK], so it’s nice to be able to go and have a bit of sun. on BBC1’s The Greatest Dancer prevent her from doing the tour, but with Strictly veteran Janette Manrara. They will be joined for the 33 shows by six other couples, including runners-up Karim Zeroual and Amy Dowden and Emma Barton – dancing with Graziano Di Prima – and judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli. fter joining Strictly at the last minute to replace an injured Jamie Laing, former Emmerdale star Kelvin ent on to win it. “It’s like a Hollywood script in many ways,” he says. “You ould never have believed it if you read it. I was very much he underdog and I had no real aspirations. I was just elishing the challenge of being associated with such a restigious show. “It’s probably the best job I’ve ever had and will have. t’s so unique in what it gives you – it’s been an amazing experience and one that I will always remember.” Kelvin is in safe hands with Janette, whose celebrity partner on the show was Paralympic table tennis player Will Bayley. “Oti adores Kelvin and spoke wonders about how amazing his work ethic is and how much fun she had with

him,” she says. “She told me to enjoy it and look after him.” Fortunately, the pair got to know each other well during the series. “We were good mates throughout so it wasn’t that awkward when we were put together,” says Janette. Rehearsals are going well, and Kelvin can’t wait to experience life on the road. “The thought of performing in arenas – I can’t sing but I feel like a rock star,” he laughs. “I just can’t imagine what that atmosphere’s going to be like.” After the tour ends in February, Janette has her dancer husband Aljaz Skorjanec’s 30th birthday party to look forward to, while Kelvin will take a breather before what promises to be a very busy year. “There are a lot of exciting projects that I have got on,” he says. “I am very excited.”

arim and Amy are champing at the bit to get on the road. “Everyone keeps saying how amazing the buzz is when you are in these arenas,“ says CBBC presenter Karim. “So to be performing with Amy again and to have that feeling of everyone cheering us on will be great.” While professional dancer Amy has been part of the Strictly tour before, this will be her first time with a celebrity partner. “I am really excited for that,” she says. “It’s going to be so much fun to go around the country and show everyone what we can do.” Karim enjoyed having some lengthy lie-ins over Christmas, but found being out of the show’s “bubble” something of a challenge. “I didn’t have a schedule, which was really weird. And when I left work one day, I couldn’t remember how to get home.” After the tour, Amy will focus her energies on her summer wedding. She and her professional dance partner Ben Jones became engaged in 2018 and will tie the knot in July – with Karim among the guests of course. “There will be no stress,” she says. “At the end of the day it’s a celebration and a really good party.”

ALEX SCOTT AND NEIL JONES here’s no doubt that Strictly T has raised the public profiles of sports presenter

and former England footballer Alex and professional dancer Neil, who had previously only ever taken part in group dances on the show. Alex was his first celebrity partner. “People know my name now and have stopped calling me ‘the ginger one’,” he laughs. Former England Lioness Alex is delighted to have widened her fanbase. “I have been in a football environment so people who weren’t into sport have got to know me a bit more. Now I am known as ‘Alex from Strictly’.”

This year will be particularly exciting one for the presenter. “I have a busy summer ahead with the Euros and then the Olympics. I am presenting on The One Show, too. I don’t want to be boxed in to just sports, so I am trying to branch out and do other things.” Neil will be equally busy. Following the Strictly tour he will be choreographing Graziano Di Prima’s solo tour, which begins in March, and in May and early June will be part of the Strictly Come Dancing: The Professionals tour.

I am grateful for having a ew skill, but to have him in my life now, it’s ust wonderful.” The last series was particularly significant for ohannes, who not only landed his first celebrity artner but also made show history by dancing ith another man, his friend and fellow rofessional Graziano Di Prima. “I loved that my dance was groundbreaking,” he beams. “Am I surprised about the complaints? There were 300 people out of how many millions? We live in a progressive time and it was just beautiful. I was dancing with my brother. What more could one ask for? It was big and it meant a lot to a lot of people.”

ctress Emma was partnered with Anton du Beke on the show but has a new tour partner Graziano, who finds the prospect of stepping to Anton’s shoes rather daunting. “I am so excited and nervous in a positive way,” e says. “I am nervous because I am taking the lace of the king of ballroom dancing. He has ot many years’ experience compared to me but feel so lucky to do it, and Emma is amazing.” For her part, Emma is relishing having the est of both worlds. “I miss Anton – he was the best partner and e had the best fun,” she says, “but I am so lucky hat not only did I dance with the king of ballroom but now I have got the king of Latin, too. Graziano is just amazing and I think we are going to have the best time.” She is thrilled to be finally fulfilling her

childhood dream of performing on a big stage. “I am going to feel like a Spice Girl. As a little girl all I did was hairbrush singing in front of the mirror to Madonna and Bananarama, and now I will be in arenas where the top musicians perform. I am going to cry or wet myself.” Following the tour, Emma will return to her role of Honey Mitchell in BBC1’s EastEnders, while Graziano will spend March and early April doing his solo tour before turning his attention to his wedding. He is to marry fellow Italian dancer Giada Lini in June. “We planned things last summer as we were going to be so busy,” he says. “We found a restaurant in Sicily and I am going to marry her in the little church in my town where I grew up. I can’t believe it’s happening. It was so far away and now it’s getting closer.”

MIKE BUSHELL AND KATYA JONES ike, the sports presenter on BBC1’s Breakfast, M says he is “unbelievably, off-the-scale excited” about the tour. “I have had my taste of Strictly but now it goes to another level with huge crowds in huge arenas. I just can’t wait,” he says. Professional dancer Katya urges him to make the most of it. “It’s very exciting and I would say to Mike to just enjoy it, embrace it. Every night when you stand there and take a bow and the audience goes mental, bottle it up because it really is truly special.” n The pair kept in touch over Christmass, and Katya even joined Mike and hiss family for dinner. “I met Crumblee the dog,” she smiles. “His daughters were there, his in-laws. It was really nice.” Mike feels extremely proud to have been part of Strictly. “It’s so popular because it reaches out to everybody in the family and community. There is something for everyone, whether it’s the contestants or the dancers.”

Launching an environmental prize with broadcaster Sir David Attenborough in December, he said: “The Earth is at a tipping point and we

face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet, or we remember our unique power as human beings to lead… and problem-solve.” Nominations were also announced for Bafta’s 2020 Film Awards last week. SHOOTING STARS The prolific striker now has a lively five-a-side team on his hands. “The kids love playing football with me,” he says. “Finley’s obsessed with it and Sofia gets involved as much as she can, too. “They’ve watched me play and want to do what Daddy does. All we need is a football pitch to let them run riot. “Maybe Olivia will play when she’s older, too,” he adds with a smile. “I wouldn’t push them into becoming professional footballers, though. Whatever any of them ends up doing, I want them to be happy.” With that, the elated new dad picks up Olivia for a cuddle before taking her off to change her nappy, telling us: “Although Becky tells me I’m a typical man and don’t show much emotion, deep inside I’m over the moon with my kids. “I love having a big family. It’s matured me and kept me grounded. The only thing I want is for them to be happy and proud of me. “I’m away a lot but when I’m at home, I try to do as much as I can for them,” he continues, adding with a laugh: “I gave Olivia her first bath last night. I’m not sure if she liked it, though – she kicked off a bit.” Becky, 37, met Jamie, who she calls the “most amazing husband and father”, in 2014 and they tied the knot two years later, in a lavish ceremony featured exclusively in hello!. “I’ve discovered there are two Jamie Vardys, the one on the pitch and the one at home – and they’re both so different,” she says. “On the pitch, he’s driven, determined and aggressive. But at home, he’s so chilled. “When I’m tired, he makes dinner for us all and no job is too big or too small for him. Every night, he baths Sofia and Finley and will sit on the floor with Sofia to blow dry her hair. “Now he can’t wait for me to express milk so he can bottle-feed Olivia.” Jamie was also by Becky’s side when she gave birth three days early. In the run up to her due date – 1 January – “it felt like a countdown”, she says. “I’d been very ill with anxiety and stress and was panicking that she might be born on Christmas Day, while Jamie was training and I was on my own with the kids. “The last thing I wanted was to miss Christmas Day with our children. “I thought that if I could get past Boxing Day, I could relax a bit,” she adds. “Luckily, I think my body knew it wasn’t time.” Becky had already been taken to hospital in the late stages of the pregnancy after suffering agonising pain. “Jamie had to rush me into hospital straight after a game because I was very unwell and was in agony,” she says. “I was kept in overnight and doctors discovered that kidney stones had formed during the pregnancy, but I had passed them.” Following persistent cramps, pain and high blood pressure over the festive period, she was eventually admitted to Leicester General Hospital on 27 December to be induced. She was in labour for 16 hours. “Jamie was brilliant – so supportive and encouraging,” she tells us. “He even tried to crack a joke about the epidural needle to take my mind off it and the painful contractions.” As well as Jamie’s support, Becky used the breathing techniques she’d learnt in yoga to

When he wakes up every morning, he asks: ‘Where’s baby?’ and comes into the bedroom to give her a kiss on the head. He’s so gentle with her.” Olivia’s sisters are thrilled with the newcomer, too. “Sofia wants to hold her all the time,” says Becky. “And Megan’s like a second mum. The little girl was placed straight on to her mum’s chest while her happy dad cut the umbilical cord. “When she gave a little cry, I welled up,” Becky says. “I was so overwhelmed by the life we’d produced that all the pain I’d been through melted away. “She looked so perfect and Jamie and I were in awe of her. We couldn’t stop marvelling at her tiny hands and feet, her fingers and toes. She was born with soft dark hair and olive skin like mine and she was the spit of Sofia and Finley when they were babies.” In order to bond with his brand new daughter, Jamie took off his shirt for skin-to-skin contact and held Olivia against him while Becky sipped a cup of NHS tea with toast and jam. “It tasted like the best meal I’d ever had,” she says, laughing. HIGH FIVE While Olivia is the epitome of perfect calmness throughout our shoot, her mum tells us she underestimated the adjustment required in having baby number five. “I was a bit naïve,” she says. “I thought it would be a walk in the park; that everything would slot into place because I’ve done it four times before. “But as well as ending up with mastitis and conjunctivitis and having to go on antibiotics, I panicked about getting the balance right – of looking after Olivia and giving the other children my attention, too. “As women we put too much pressure on ourselves to be perfect, but we have to remember that perfection doesn’t exist. That goes for criticising ourselves about our bodies after we’ve given birth, too. “We need to stop beating ourselves up about the wobbly bits and the weight we’ve gained and learn to enjoy the moment, and those precious times with our babies that we’ll never get back. “Motherhood is the most exhausting, challenging, but rewarding job in the world,” she says. “Nothing compares to it, nothing can beat it and it’s what I’ve always wanted.” Becky is full of admiration for fellow mothers in the spotlight such as the Duchess of Cambridge and businesswoman Tamara Ecclestone. “Kate’s three children are so cute and wellbehaved,” says the new mum. “And Tamara is a great mum. Nothing deters her from bringing up her daughter Sofia the way she thinks best, even if she gets criticised for breastfeeding her for too long. “I admire a woman who stands firm for her beliefs,” she adds. As far as Jamie is concerned, Becky is the one deserving the title of perfect mum. “She’s amazing,” he tells us. “When I come home and see how happy and smiley the kids are, I know that it’s because of all her hard work and affection. “Walking through the door at the end of the day is brilliant. “Finley and Sofia rush to see me and want to play and there’s always a lot of activity going on. It’s like a circus and I love it.” “We wouldn’t have it any other way,” Becky says. “I love a busy house and having a big family has always been important to me. The best thing in the world is being a mum. “I couldn’t wait to see the back of 2019. But with a new baby and a new year ahead of us, it’s like a fresh start.” Would she and Jamie consider trying for baby number six? Becky pauses. “No,” she smiles. “I think we’re done. SPEAKING FROM THE HEART

KATE FERDINAND

ON HOW HUSBAND RIO, FAMILY AND FITNESS GAVE HER A NEW OUTLOOK ON LIFE her 1.1 million Instagram followers, Kate Ferdinand is sharing the secrets of her fitness and lifestyle with husband Rio in a new book, dedicated to her ready-made family. “When I met Rio and the children and became part of their lives, I figured out what was important and what wasn’t and it gave me a new outlook on life and a sense of purpose,” she tells hello!. “They’ve been through so much and it made me realise what is important – and that is being happy.” Kate, 28, shot to fame on The Only Way is Essex, but stepped back from the ITV Be show after meeting 41-year-old Rio. The couple married last September, four years after the former England football star lost his first wife Rebecca, 34, to cancer, and Kate became stepmother to his three children: Lorenz, 13, Tate, 11, and Tia, eight. She describes them as “my absolute world”. It is through the love of her family and the help of therapy that Kate has learnt to accept herself after battling anxiety and body dysmorphia. “I’ve struggled with anxiety for a long time, but I’ve found ways to manage it,” she says. “I always thought I looked fat, even though I wasn’t, and I would binge on food then not [eat]. There was no stability. “Therapy has helped me a lot. It was amazing to have Rio there supporting me and giving me the love I need, but it was my own journey. Because however amazing he tells me I look, it’s an internal

journey that has helped me understand why I am the way I am – what makes me happy, what makes me sad, when I’m feeling anxious, what can I do. “I think I’ve put too much pressure on myself to be the perfect stepmum, the perfect wife,” she adds. “Even just taking that label away helps. I’ve learnt to accept my faults and to stop trying to be someone I’m never going to be and to accept myself for who I am and love who I am.” In Fitter, Healthier, Happier, Kate writes about how exercise and healthy eating has helped her mental and physical health. It features healthy recipes and simple workouts that can be done at home, as well as tips on avoiding temptation. OUT OF HARM’S REACH “I love food and one thing I’ve learnt is that if I’m not enjoying the food, I’m not going to stick to a healthy diet,” she says. “I’ll have a Chinese now and then and we still love chocolate and sweets, but we put them in a high cupboard with a lock on it so if I’m tempted to climb the ladder, I have time to think about what I’m doing. “Rio and I work out together and motivate each other and the kids are very active and sporty. The boys love football and Tia loves horse riding and we love walking our chihuahua Ronnie. “Mine is a simple regime you can do at home,” she continues. “It’s not about being on a strict diet. “It’s a lifestyle plan and it’s about allowin yourself to have your nd not being too strict on yourself.” After spending Christmas in the Maldives with her new family, Kate is looking for ward to 2020 – and possibly expanding their umbers in the future. “At the moment, e’re just enjoying arried life and I’m etting back to work and njoying that. But at the start of what was to become a week of high d drama for the House of Windsor, rumours began to swirl that they were, in fact, preparing to move to the Commonwealth country. Theyy cconfirmed their decision to change their role a day later, in a “personal message from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex” sent to media via a Buckingham Palace email account and posted to their @SussexRoyal Instagram page. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” said their statement. “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”

‘A DIFFERENT APPROACH’ The announcement sent shockwaves through the Palace. It quickly emerged that senior royals had not been consulted on the statement or its timing, with one source telling hello! it had been “a bolt out of the blue”. In a brief official statement, Buckingham Palace said discussions with the Duke and Duchess were “at an early stage”, adding: “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.” It is understood that Harry, 35, and 38-year-old Meghan had been discussing the potential move for several months, but only finalised their plan during their Christmas break. They informed the royal family slightly more than a week before going public. “Members of the royal family were made aware of the decision over Christmas, when they were still in Canada, and there was an expectation that there would be meetings and more meat on the bone in terms of their plan before it was

Harry also told staff: “The warmth and hospitality that we were shown while [in Canada] was unbelievable and that’s exactly why we chose to go out there. So thank you” made public,” a senior royal source told hello!. The couple returned to the UK on 6 January without Archie, who stayed in Canada in the care of his nanny and Meghan’s close friend Jessica Mulroney, and summoned their closest aides to their home at Frogmore Cottage, in Windsor, to share their decision with them.

TEA AND TALK The Duke and Duchess began the next day with a private visit to London’s Hubb Community Kitchen to “check in” with the women with whom Meghan had worked on the best-selling charity cookbook Together: Our Community Cookbook, helping people affected by 2017’s Grenfell Tower fire. They appeared in good spirits as they arrived at Canada House in Trafalgar Square, holding hands while greeting the crowd that had gathered to see them on their first public appearance since November. Inside, they chatted to Canada High Commissioner Janice Charette over tea, oat biscuits and Nanaimo bars – a chocolate, coconut and custard confectionery from Vancouver Island. Among the discussion were areas they could work on together, such as climate change, gender equality and female empowerment. In addition, they toured an exhibition of work by the indigenous artist Skawennati. Speaking to Janice, Harry said:

“There is a hell of a lot of work to be done and things to be talked through.” He also told staff: “The warmth and hospitality that we were shown while there was unbelievable and that’s exactly why we chose to go out there. So thank you.” Meghan, dressed casually in a Massimo Dutti top and skirt, added: “My goodness, it was just such an incredible time we were able to have there and with our son, too. “And just to be able to take in the warmth that we experienced from the people, but also just to walk around and just see the beauty of Canada. “To see Archie go: ‘Ahhh,’ when you walk by and just see how stunning it is, so it meant a lot to us,” she added. As they left, Harry’s parting words were tellingly: “We had a useful conversation. We hope to see you all again soon.” But it became clear something major was happening behind the scenes and last Wednesday, exactly 599 days after Meghan joined the royal family with a fairytale wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, the Duke and Duchess published their decision to step back from their full-time royal roles. They also shared lengthy details of their vision for a “progressive new role” on a slick new sussexroyal.com website, which was registered last March and created by the same Toronto agency that set up Meghan’s

lifestyle blog The Tig, which she ran when she was an actress. The announcement made headlines around the world and prompted a swift response from the Queen, who directed aides from Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Kensington Palace and the Sussexes’ team to come up with a “workable solution” that would resolve the situation “within days, not weeks”. Sources tell hello! the court wants to help the couple pursue their vision, however complicated. “They want to try to do something different and the family is resolved to help them see if it can be done,” said an insider. “There is a lot to do, but people are calm and focused on making this work.” MIXING THEIR ROLES Courtiers have been liaising with governments and authorities overseas and examining how the couple might be able to combine holding a public role with earning a private income. “The royal family are famous; they’re not celebrities,” said one insider. “They try to use their fame not for their personal benefit, but for the promotion of their causes and charities.” Another source told hello! that while there was “disappointment” among other members of the family, there was no anger. “The Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge will try to make this work as best they can,” they added. “They [Harry and Meghan] are asking them to think differently about their role. “They will, of course, endeavour to do everything they can to help them with that, but it’s not straightforward.” After making a private visit on Wednesday to the National Theatre, of which she is patron, and as negotiations continued, Meghan flew back to Canada later in the week to return to Archie. This was “always the plan”, said a source close to the couple, adding: “It was a quick working visit for her and she was anxious to get back to him. It didn’t make sense to bring him, given the jet-lag factor.” The Palace has yet to announce any engagements for the Duchess for the coming weeks, suggesting she will remain in Canada for the foreseeable future. Harry has remained in the UK, but is expected to join his wife and son after hosting the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draw, which takes place at Buckingham Palace H on Thursday. REPORT: EMILY NASH

A whirlwind courtship culminated in a picture-perfect engagement announcement in the grounds of Kensington Palace; a few months later, the newly anointed Duke and Duchess of Sussex said “I do” in a fairytale ceremony in St George’s Chapel, Windsor, as an international TV audience of millions watched. Harry and Meghan were seen as a breath of fresh air, the couple vowing to make the most of their positions by helping the causes and charities closest to their hearts. Close ties with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge seemed to be the jewel in the crown of the royal family, while the Sussexes embarked

on international tours and made inroads into changing people’s lives, visiting charities and organisations up and down the country. The arrival of son Archie last May last year looked like the icing on the cake of a blessed life. However, cracks were beginning to show behind the scenes and, eventually, Meghan and Harry bared their emotions in a TV documentary during their tour of Africa. Those fractures grew into a chasm when, after an extended Christmas break in Canada, the couple last week announced they would be stepping back from senior royal duties. hello! looks at the highlights of their time in the royal spotlight and answers the big questions their decision has raised…

Although it is thought they finalised their plans on their seven-week holiday in Canada over the festive season, Prince Harry and Meghan had been thinking about making this move for several months previously. They now want to put plans in place to ensure their son Archie, who turns one in May, can have an established base as he grows up and experiences both his parents’ homelands. Where will they live? Harry and Meghan intend to keep their UK home at Frogmore Cottage, Windsor, which they moved into last year, after it was extensively renovated for around £2.4m. They made their first official public appearance as a couple at the city’s Invictus Games in 2017, while Victoria, British Columbia is one of the potential host cities for the 2022 competition. Los Angeles, where Meghan was born and raised, could be another option as her mother Doria Ragland still lives there.

How will they fund their own lives? It is estimated that Harry and Meghan have a combined fortune of more than £30m. The Duke inherited around £7m from the Queen Mother and more than £20m from his mother Diana, Princess of Wales. Meghan’s net worth following her time on Suits is estimated to be around £4m. The couple plan to work to enhance their fortunes and have stated they want to give up their income from the Sovereign Grant – the money given to the Queen by the Government to fund the royal family’s official duties – which currently funds most of the Sussexes’ official duties, travel arrangements and staff.

The Sussex Royal website explains: “This provision has been in place since Prince William and Prince Harry first established their offices in support of The Queen, and is the responsibility of The Prince of Wales.” Prince Charles gave his sons £4.9m via his Duchy estate in the past year, with Harry thought to have received just under half of it. royal family seemed the last thing on his mind. How things have changed. When I heard the news that Harry and Meghan were taking a new path, I couldn’t help but reflect on the fun-loving kid who has always worn his heart on his sleeve. The past three years have been unbearable for him, torn between duty and following his heart. By “stepping back”, Harry is boldly stating what many of us have known about him for years. He simply doesn’t want to be royal, owned by the public and judged by how successfully he toes the line. People should think twice before blaming Meghan for this decision. Far from being the woman who stole the People’s Prince, the Duchess of Sussex has merely given her husband the courage to face his demons and follow his dream. But by walking away, Harry is taking the biggest gamble of his life and the early signs are that large swathes of the public are angry to see him go. Only time will tell whether Harry’s only hope of finding true happiness is to escape shackles of royalty. I hope for his sake this bold step works for but at the moment it is far too early for the s in line to the throne to pull out the brandy an light the cigar in celebration…

or not they are going to keep their HRH titles, or whether the Duke will be removed from the line of succession, although they do say they want to “carve out a progressive new role within this institution”. They signed off their initial statement announcing their move with: “Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” indicating they will continue with the titles for the time being at least. Sources suggest the royal family do not want to strip them of their titles. Do any other members of the royal family operate this way? Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Harry’s cousins, both have jobs while maintaining HRH titles and support the Queen at family events such as Trooping the Colour and Royal Ascot. They are also patrons of a number of charities. However, they do not carry out official engagements on behalf of their grandmother. In the early years of their marriage, the Earl and Countess of Wessex ran their own businesses – Prince Edward in TV production and Sophie in PR – alongside their royal roles, but they decided to give up their careers in 2002. How will this news affect their charity work? Will Harry continue to support the Invictus Games? According to their statement last week, Harry and Meghan will continue “to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth and our patronages”. Their website continues: “Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have chosen their patronages to support charitable organisations that represent causes important to them and that honour the legacy of Her Majesty The Queen.” Meghan has four solo patronages: the National Theatre; Mayhew, the animal charity; The Association of Commonwealth Universities, and Smart Works, which helps unemployed women in need with full outfits and training for interviews. Harry’s patronages include the Rugby Football League, children’s charity WellChild, and Sentebale, the HIV charity he co-founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. The Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style event for wounded and sick servicemen and women, is a particular passion project for Harry and one he is likely to remain committed to.

Harry and Meghan have made n no secret of their desire to bring up Archie away a from the spotlight and decided not to acceept a royal title for their son. He is the third of seven children, who all play an instrument to a high standard, with the six oldest reaching the semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent in 2015. They not only help keep Sheku’s feet on the ground but share the same focus. “They’re very proud as well,” he says. “We all have the same goals, musically, and the things we want to pursue. So [the MBE] is significant in a way that it’s motivating.” Are there any pinch-me moments, considering how much he has achieved at such a young age? “Not really, because my main focus is always to develop as a musician,” he says. “I have my own private goals for how I want to play and that’s what I focus on. I try not to get distracted from what I really want to achieve.” HOOKED ON CLASSICS Those achievements now include Elgar, a new album of pieces centred on the composer’s Cello Concerto, one of the best-loved works in the classical music canon written for a cello soloist. “This is my favourite piece of music,” he says. “I grew up listening to it and loving it, so the opportunity to record it was a joy for me. “It’s such a personal piece of music when you come to play it because it feels like it’s very intimate, in the sense that you’re not shouting or telling the world something, but that you’re speaking to one person. That’s why it’s such a moving piece of music.” But the young cellist is not overwhelmed by the challenge of taking on such a famous piece of music. “I feel I’ve loved it for so long and played it a lot, so I feel confident,” he tells us. “Of course, there are many amazing recordings of this piece and it’s loved by so many people. But I feel more inspired than intimidated.” As a bonus, Sheku got to work with one of his heroes, Sir Simon Rattle, who conducted the London Symphony Orchestra for the piece. “I was very lucky to work with him as he’s such an amazing musician and someone I’ve admired for many years,” he says. “He’s so open to ideas, but also ver y creative, constantly interested and searching for new things. That’s how I want to be. Dec, also 44, agreed it was “really lovely” that the TV duo still had the public’s support.

which is hardly surprising given she comes from a family steeped in horses and racing. “Horses have been a part of my life since I was born,” she tells hello! in an exclusive interview as The Jockey Club Cheltenham names her 2020’s fashion ambassador of The Festival, one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious sporting occasions. “My

mum is a keen rider and so we were lucky enough to have horses growing up to learn to ride on.” Frankie’s father Harr y runs Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, one of the largest racehorse ownership agencies, and her grandfather the 7th Earl of Carnarvon – known as “Porchie” – was the Queen’s racing manager. He would surely be proud of his granddaughter’s new role. The 24-year-old model will be making a

stylish appearance at day two of this year’s Cheltenham Festival, which starts on 10 March, with the final day, featuring the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup, on 13 March. “I’m so excited,” says Frankie. “I’ve always loved going racing and to polo matches. With my modelling career and family racing history, it’s a really authentic collaboration.” Despite her historic connection with horseracing, she doesn’t see herself taking over the family reins.

“I’m enjoying carving my own path and being able to mix my modelling day job with my enjoyment of the races,” she says. O f h e r g r a n d f a t h e r, w h o s e connection with horseracing has featured on Netflix’s hit royal series The Crown, Frankie tells us: “I was six when he passed away so I have vague memories of him at Christmas time with me, my siblings and cousins clambering over him,” she tells us. “He was an amazing man who knew

I understand the Queen respected him very much and vice versa. “It was devastating when he died as he was such a loved man,” she adds. “My grandmother Jeanie was totally devoted to him. “I would be so lucky to find in another person what they had between each other – true love.”

STABLE MATES Now living in Hammersmith, London, with her rescue dog Chicken and two of her friends, Frankie’s childhood years in Hampshire sound idyllic. She grew up the middle child of three at the family home, Clanville House. It is near Highclere Castle, owned by her uncle the 8th Earl of Carnarvon and known worldwide as Downton Abbey. Despite having links with two of TV’s most loved programmes, Frankie says she hasn’t seen either. “I don’t watch that

‘I try as much as I can to buy second-hand or rent clothes for events and to avoid fast fashion’

RACING COLOURS When it comes to her own wardrobe, Frankie is passionate about sustainable fashion. “I try as much as I can to buy second-hand or rent clothes from companies like Hurr for events and to try avoid fast fashion,” she says. “I’m aware there is a lot of waste that goes into every photoshoot, but the industry is really waking up to it and change is starting, which is a big positive.” While she lives in “baggy jeans and T-shirts”, Frankie loves an opportunity to dress up so was in her element shooting at Cheltenham. “Princess Diana is an eternal style icon of mine,” she says. “I’m very tall so high heels aren’t really what I wear, even when I dress up. I enjoy finding ways to be able to wear flats while still looking racecourse chic.” And while she may be a winner in the style stakes, Frankie tells us: “I’m rubbish at choosing winners. I always seem to bet on the horse that comes last. I’ll just enjoy the atmosphere of the day and watching the beautiful horses.” H INTERVIEW: JANE DOWDESWELL PHOTOS: NEALE HAYNES/JOCKEY CLUB STYLING: KATE BYRNE HAIR: JADE AT SIMON SMITH CHELTENHAM MAKE-UP: ALEXANDRA AT SIMON SMITH CHELTENHAM

much TV,” she tells us. “But, it is wonderful to see a special family place being loved and known by so many people.” In a roundabout way, Frankie also has the sport of kings to thank for her modelling career. “I was actually scouted for the first time when I was 13 at the races,” she says. “Then I was scouted again by Select about two and a half years ago, so I’ve been doing it since then. “My first paid job was for Dolce & Gabbana. I was flown to Milan for a show.” Other career highlights so far include walking in front of the Queen at the Richard Quinn show during London Fashion Week 2018. “I couldn’t see very much through the face mask I was wearing so I had no idea she was even there,” she says. “A friend said to me after that she saw the Queen sitting front row and I thought she was winding me up. I refused to believe her. “The Queen to me is a bit of an icon. Whether you’re a fan of the monarchy or not, I feel there is a respect for what she does. She is 93 years old and is out meeting people, hosting world leaders and keeping a smile on her face. I think most people at 93 would have been long retired, but she’s incredible.”

Meanwhile, Randy introduces us to their pets. “That’s Olivia,” he says of the bigger dog, who has come to say hello, “and Elliot” -– named after the leads of Law & Order: SVU, in which Kathy appeared in 2010. The pair balance each other, her exuberant energy complemented by his easygoing nature. “Randy has too many great qualities to count,” she says. “He’s not a Hollywood ‘d-bag’ guy. PRESIDENTIAL POST Three years ago, she moved into this light-filled home, which backs on to a sprawling garden, infinity pool and serene canyon beyond. This picture of domestic bliss conceals the hardships Kathy has known of late. She lost her older sister Joyce to cancer; her mother, Maggie, is living with dementia; and for the past two years Kathy has been climbing back from the fallout resulting from an infamous photo she posted on social media, of herself pretending to hold up the disembodied head of US President Donald Trump. “It was a mask with ketchup,” she has reminded critics but she issued a

public apology. This didn’t stem the backlash, consisting not just of hate mail, death threats and cancellation of her shows but also, she maintains, a federal investigation. It could have ruined her. Instead, it encouraged a comeback: if she couldn’t book gigs at home, she would do so abroad. It fuelled a hit 2017 tour overseas, another in North America in 2018 and, this year, the film Kathy Griffin: A Hell of a Story (out on YouTube), which documents the whole thing, complete with raw, emotional behind-the-scenes moments and laugh-out-loud performance footage. She’s proud she fought back. “I am the first person in history that this particular thing has ever happened to. So that’s one of the reasons I made the film – hopefully, it’s funny but it really does have historic value. But don’t worry, it’s got Kardashian jokes, too.” When we sit down with her, she’s in her element, still basking in her recent successes and ready to share stories and, naturally, a few laughs. What made you fall for this house? “I didn’t think I’d be a gatedcommunity girl but this is the

tour manager, my marketing manager. And it just works for us.” Why do you think your relationship works? “It’s a little bit of the classic tale of opposites attract. Obviously, I’m extremely extroverted and don’t have a filter and he’s extremely introverted, to the point where sometimes he feels selfconscious about it. I was like: ‘You’re in luck. You’ll never get in a word edgewise with me.’ “I did make him one promise when we started dating: ‘There’s only one promise I can stick to besides being faithful – you’ll never be bored. I’m not saying there won’t be problems but you won’t be bored.’” You split for a while and announced the break-up… “We broke up for four months. I honestly thought we weren’t going to get back together. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have done that. And so I’m sort of laughing now because we both thought: ‘Oh boy, it’s over.’ One month, two months go by and we’re living separately going: ‘Hmm, I wonder what the other is doing.’ “Then it was easy breezy. It wasn’t even dramatic. We had one of those eight-hour conversations… Then – something we never do – we went away for five days, just the two of us. We talked and talked and rediscovered each other.”

s

one that checked off every box. I wanted a place that represented a little sort of sanctuary.” Which is your favourite part of the house? “I call it the chamber. It’s really the master bedroom that has a sitting room, the parlour, and a bathroom and the walk-in closet. Once I close that one door, it’s like having an apartment inside my house. There are often times when I’m in bed watching my news, the door’s open and Randy’s right there in the sitting room watching sports. Or we sit in bed together and watch silly shows. It feels like a sanctuary. And the view is beautiful.” Tell us about Randy… “We’ve been together for eight years. The first year, he worked at the Los Angeles Times in marketing. After about a year, it was like a longdistance relationship [because she was touring]. So Suze Orman, the financial guru, said to me: ‘Girlfriend, you’re never going to see him. He’s got a master’s degree – why don’t you make him your tour manager and you can be together! Unless he can’t do the job.’ I’m like: ‘Okay, the last line’s the most important thing.’ “So Suze, in my last house, sat him down – I wasn’t allowed in the room – and interviewed him for the job. And she was tough! “So it works. Seven years now he has been my

Where does your fighting spirit come from? “My parents, one hundred per cent. I mean, the fighting Irish, what can I tell you. My dad was the type of guy who could be funny on cue, like comedian-funny. And my mom was just funny but wouldn’t know why. Like she’d say something outrageous and everyone would laugh. And they were from the Depression, so I grew up in a Depression-mentality household: use it up, wear it out, make it do. No nonsense. My dad was in the Second World War. My mom worked my whole life. She always worked at least part-time while raising five kids.” It must be gratifying to know that your parents witnessed your success… “Yes. The best part, if I may say, of my success, from when I had three lines on ER with George Clooney – and I don’t know where I got the [nerve] because nobody knew me, I was there for a couple of lines – every single gig I’d do, whether it was a commercial, whether I had one line or more, I’d always ask: ‘My parents – may they please come? They’ll be really respectful.’ They had two folding chairs in the back of their car at all times and came to almost every single set. Model Hana Cross looked sensational at the British Fashion Awards with a slicked back ponytail and a silver-lined eye. When applying her own make-up, the 22-year-old face of Bershka Beauty prefers to use her fingers instead of brushes. “I feel it goes on the skin nicer and makes it look more natural and less cakey,” says Hana.

BE YOUR OWN BOSS Are you a budding beauty entrepreneur? The website mybeautybrand.com – from make-up brand ByMe – is inviting customers to open their own “store” on its site, where they upload photos of their looks that use ByMe products. If an image inspires people to buy the product, the e-store owner earns a commission. Tipped as a new-gen Avon, it is the brainchild of Robin Derrick, a former creative director of Vogue, and Max Leykind, the founder of British make-up brand Eyeko. “We wanted to create a place of innovation and entrepreneurship to empower people,” Robin tells hello!. As well as stocking ByMe’s highly pigmented, creamy eye shadows, lipsticks, glosses and blushers, the platform has collaborated with queen of nails Marian Newman on her debut line of nail polishes.

“Gritty scrubs can be too aggressive for skin in winter and can increase inflammation,” says Linda Blahr, education and science manager at SkinCeuticals. The new SkinCeuticals Glycolic Renewal Cleanser, £30 (visit skinceuticals.co.uk), buffs away stubborn, dull skin cells and, with aloe leaf juice, it’s mild enough to use twice a day. “The cleanser alone will be enough to refine the skin’s texture and make it feel super smooth without causing irritation,” says Linda.

Tim shin Fan of the b y blow-dry but fed up with a frizzy finish and arm ache from holding a heavy hairdryer? This month sees the launch of GHD’s lighter Helios dryer, with a contoured nozzle to concentrate the air and speed up your styling, a slim handle and even weight distribution. “It’s no good just getting water out of your hair, it’s about how you mould and shape,” says Zoe Irwin, GHD’s UK brand ambassador. “Minimising drying time also limits damage to your hair. And remember to use the cold shot button when drying – this blast of cold air helps to lock your style in place.” Helios accessories, including an Afro pick to sculpt curls, will be available later in the year. THE SMELL OF SUCCESS Huda and Mona Kattan, sisters and founders of Huda Beauty, are launching a new scent in their Kayali collection – Déjà Vu White Flower. “Tuberose is one of my favourite ingredients, so it was important we got it right in this fragrance,” Mona tells hello!. “It can be kind of mature, so we mixed in top notes like nectarine and pear to create something special. Then we added vanilla – because we add it to everything. It’s so addictive.” Which scents remind the fragrance aficionado of the UK?

“Something peppery with bergamot. I have a few from Penhaligon’s, Jo Malone London and Jo Loves.” Reflecting on the success of Huda Beauty, Mona says: “I love being able to take ideas and execute them and then see it all come to life. It’s magical. But the most exciting part is our team and being able to create careers for people. I think that’s very special. For the first two or three years it was just us, and it was hard to convince people to work here and pass up opportunities at Estée Lauder or

L’Oréal. We would say: ‘You have to believe in us, we’re onto something.’ Now our team say they’re doing their dream jobs and we’re able to pay them well, which excites me.” Mona, 36, is used to comparisons with her entrepreneurial peers, the Kardashians. “They’re great girls. And seeing what Kylie [Jenner] has done – being so young and so driven – she has done a lot with what she had. We have to appreciate and give credit.”

Health Matters Keep your fitness going with the help of a Hollywood hero, Chloe Madeley’s weight-training guide and some fit kit

Discipline and challenge are what drive Chloe Madeley’s fitness routine. The personal trainer works out at least four times a week, making weights her focus. Chloe has just released a new book, Transform Your Body with Weights (Bantam Press, £16.99), which sets out how to weight-train correctly and effectively from beginner to advanced, guiding you through the appropriate exercises for your level. “Weight training has changed my life,” says Chloe. “From the inside out, my entire life has been greatly enhanced by this one specific discipline.” So how does she make it fun? “Simply keep setting yourself goals – can you implement a new lift or new form of HIIT [high intensity interval training] into your plan?” If you’re having a hard time committing, Chloe advises: “First understand the science behind training, nutrition and the body. Once you get your head around the basic facts, you can figure out how to implement the behaviours that will best work for you.” Her favourite workout moves are big compound lifts, such as squats, deadlifts and hip thrusts. “It’s fun to challenge your entire body, and I like working on my glutes.” And to get her abs of steel? “Fat loss. It’s that simple.” But fitness for the 32-year-old is not just about physical strength. “Having an outlet like training and a discipline like healthy eating is imperative to my mental state,” says Chloe.

TRAIN LIKE THOR “I feel so fortunate to have worked with incredible experts in the fields of mindfulness, nutrition and training, so I thought: ‘Why not share that?’” says Thor actor Chris Hemsworth (left), explaining how his health and fitness app, Centr, came about. Fronted by Chris and wife Elsa Pataky, plus fitness professionals including Chris’s personal trainer Luke Zocchi, the app offers training sessions, meal plans and guided meditations.

If your motivation is wavering, Luke advises: “Commit to training twice a week, even if it’s 20 minutes. Once you start getting into a rhythm, it becomes second nature. “And don’t put too much pressure on yourself,” he says. “Being inspired by someone like Chris is great, but you have to remember that everyone is different. Focus on making your body the best it can be.” Centr is available for Apple and Android and at centr.com.

Nothing beats whole food according to Louise Parker, but the right supplements can give a welcome boost

We use a light touch with supplementation at Louise Parker, encouraging clients to consume their vitamins and minerals through diet as much as possible. We prescribe only what we feel is clinically effective. The supplement industry is booming and it’s had a bit of a glam-over. But beware: beautiful packaging does not equate to quality, and sound supplementation should not cost a fortune. Seek evidence and if you’re paying for expensive formulas and infusions, more questions. Ensure you ‘If the ask take advice from a registered packaging professional and that it relates to lifestyle and health history. makes big your We should be at our most promises, discerning when it comes to what we swallow.

◆ INGREDIENTS

FIRST

If the packaging makes big promises, proceed with caution. Most credible brands simply list the ingredients and rely on the expertise of the clinician to prescribe the product accordingly, based on a lifestyle examination or blood tests. The individual ingredients will have been subjected to numerous clinical studies, but the combined supplement? Probably not. ◆ DOUBLE

TROUBLE

If you do take a combined supplement (such as a “skin, hair and nails” formula or one for

pregnancy), avoid doubling up with other vitamins and minerals. Vitamin B is one to look out for; it features highly in most blends and taking too much can cause side-effects. ◆

INFUSION CONFUSION

Proceed with even more caution when it comes to vitamin infusions – given by IV drip – as you must understand what is being injected into your system. If the company won’t disclose the ingredients or can’t explain why you, as an individual, will benefit from the treatment, walk away. (The same applies to teas marketed for weight loss.) ◆ LESS

By streamlining your supplements, your regime becomes more sustainable and you are more likely to see and feel the difference. Keep it simple and doable. I doubt you need more than three supplements per day anyway. ◆ STAY

I review my personal combination of supplements three times a year with a dietitian. At the moment I’m taking a multivitamin – for insurance, really. My diet is balanced but my lifestyle is stressful. I’m also taking a probiotic and vitamin D (400iu/day). Before Christmas I was taking 800iu, to help tackle seasonal affective disorder, but I’m now tapering off towards spring. Before bed, twice a week, I use a topical or bath-soluble magnesium supplement, too. Once you discover a good night’s sleep with magnesium, you won’t look back.

FOOD

GREAT TASTE, LESS WASTE

Making sustainability delicious, Melissa Hemsley shares her latest tempting recipes, which not only save time and money but are good for the planet, too

B

ack with her latest cookbook Eat Green, Melissa Hemsley – one half of food duo Hemsley + Hemsley with her older sister, Jasmine – is passionate about healthy food and reducing our negative impact on the natural world. “If we can think more about our food – where it comes from, how it’s packaged and how we cook it – and use it all up, we can have a better impact on our health and the planet,” she tells hello!. Here, Melissa shares her passion – and some recipes – for planet-friendly eating… Melissa, tell us a bit about your new book… “Eat Green teaches you how to be flexible in buying, cooking and using up food so that you put a wider variety of UK-grown, seasonal vegetables – which tend to be more affordable and tastier – at the centre of your plate, eat less but better quality meat (if you eat meat at all) and reduce food waste.”

So what can we do to reduce food waste? “A third of all food produced ends up in the bin, but it’s not just the edible product that’s wasted. It’s also the energy, labour, water and land to grow the food, the energy to transport it to you, and then the energy, labour and land to dispose of it. Next time you’re cooking, grab a bowl and throw in everything you’d normally put in the bin, from veg scraps to the final leftovers. Could you make stock with those peelings? Could you blitz those greens into a pesto or creamy sauce? Could you make extra and freeze the rest?” You and Jasmine have a Hemsley + Hemsley cafe in London’s Selfridges. Do you have plans to open more? “We feel very lucky to have the most fantastic cafe team, with inspiring and brilliant suppliers. If we do expand, it has to be just right.” You support The Felix Project. Tell us more… “It’s a UK charity that rescues surplus food from

the food industry and delivers it to people suffering from food poverty around London. If any hello! readers can spare a day or just a few hours, they could use your help. I love helping to spread love through food.” What’s next for you? “I recently wrapped up my first series of Sustainability Sessions – a series of live panel talks in London, where I brought together inspirational women and experts to talk about how we can bring about more sustainable changes in our lives. Speakers included June Sarpong, Fearne Cotton, Grace Dent, Anita Rani and Madeleine Shaw. One third of the money raised went to various charities, including The Felix Project. “I hope to take these sessions nationwide. Above all, I hope to show people that buying, cooking and using up food in a way that is beneficial for the planet, for our communities and our health really is within everyone’s reach, and most importantly, the food tastes delicious.”

RESCUE NOODLE SOUP WITH LEFTOVER CHICKEN Serves 4 Preparation time 15 minutes Cooking time 25 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp ghee or butter • 1 large leek or onion, diced • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped • 1.2ltr/2pt vegetable stock or bone broth • 1 big handful of a mix of fresh herbs, like parsley and dill, leaves and stems chopped • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves or 1 tsp dried • 1 bay leaf (dried or fresh) • 2 celery sticks, diced • 2 carrots, thinly sliced • 2 handfuls of 2cm/¾in chunks of veg like sweet potato, squash, pumpkin, potato or courgette • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 400g/14oz noodles or spaghetti • 1 tsp olive oil • 300g/11oz mix of cabbage, rainbow chard and/or chard, stems finely chopped and leaves shredded • 300g/11oz leftover chicken, shredded

• Juice of ¼ lemon or 1 tsp apple cider vinegar • 2 big handfuls of frozen peas or sweetcorn • Fresh herb leaves to serve 1. In a wide lidded pan, heat the ghee

or butter and fry the leek or onion over a medium heat for 8 minutes. Add the garlic and fry for 1 minute. 2. Add the stock or broth, mixed herbs, thyme, bay leaf, celery, carrots, root veg and some seasoning. Pop the lid on and cook for 15 minutes, until the carrot is almost tender. 3. WAR ON WASTE Eat Green by Melissa Hemsley is a collection of recipes to help us shop smart, waste less and make a difference. Vegetables are the star ingredients in each of the 100-plus recipes and, where meat and fish are used, Melissa suggests easy swaps so vegetarians can enjoy the dishes, too. The book includes ways to reinvent leftovers, timesaving batch cooking and quick midweek suppers. Eat Green by Melissa Hemsley, with photography by Philippa Langley, is published by Ebury Press, £22.

QUINOA CAKES WITH CHIMICHURRI YOGHURT “These are a great way to use up leftover quinoa, but if you make them from scratch, just remember to cool the quinoa right down. Don’t try to cook these with hot quinoa. Serve with a refreshing green or tomato salad.”

102

INGREDIENTS • 1 small onion or 4 spring onions, finely chopped • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 big handful of fresh coriander, parsley or basil, leaves and stems finely chopped separately • 2-3 tbsp butter • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • A pinch of chilli flakes • 2 eggs • 50g/2oz flour, such as chickpea (gram) • 540g/18¼oz cooked cold quinoa (which is 200g/7oz

uncooked quinoa, rinsed well and drained, and ideally soaked first) • 100g/4oz feta, crumbled, or a hard cheese like Parmesan or Cheddar, grated For the chimichurri yoghurt • 100ml/4fl oz full-fat natural yoghurt • 1 big handful of chopped fresh coriander, leaves and stems • 1 big handful of chopped chives, spring onions or onion • 1 big handful of chopped fresh parsley, leaves and stems • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juice • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1 fat clove garlic • 1 tsp dried oregano or thyme • Chilli flakes, to taste To serve • More fresh coriander, parsley or basil leaves • Finely grated lemon zest

1. In a wide frying pan fry the

onion, garlic and herb stems over a medium heat in 1 tbsp of the butter with a good pinch of salt (less if your cooked quinoa has already been seasoned), pepper and chilli flakes for 5 minutes, stirring from time to time. 2. Meanwhile, whisk the eggs in a large bowl, then mix in the flour, followed by the cold quinoa and crumbled feta. 3. Add the onion and herb mix to the bowl with the herb leaves. Mix well and shape into 12 cakes (or 24 bite-size), about 1cm/½in thick. If you find it tricky to form them, add a touch more flour. If the cakes aren’t firm, pop them in the fridge for 15 minutes – you can use this time to make the chimichurri yoghurt (see Step 4). 4. To cook the cakes, heat the remaining butter in the original

pan. Once hot, add as many cakes as will fit without touching in a single layer – I can fit 4 in my pan. If they touch, they’ll steam instead of fry. Let them sizzle for about 3 minutes on each side to get nice and hot throughout. Repeat for the rest of the batch. I turn the heat up as I add the cakes, then lower to a medium heat to fry. Put your cooked cakes in a low oven to keep warm. 5. To make the chimichurri yoghurt, combine all the ingredients with some salt and pepper and blitz in a food processor. If you like it saucier, chop all the ingredients, then thin it out with a few tbsp of water. 6. Serve the quinoa cakes scattered with herb leaves and a sprinkling of lemon zest, with the chimichurri yoghurt in a bowl on the side.

n her trademark buff-coloured mac and floppy green hat, DCI Vera Stanhope is hardly the most glamorous heroine to grace the small screen, yet actress Brendaa Blethyn has turned her into one of the nation’s favourite sleuths. ITV’s detective drama Vera began its tenth series this month, with four feature-length episodes. As the crime-cracking cop, its star has won a legion of admirers – around eeight million, in fact – and d even a marriage pro oposal. “Vera receives fan n mail from all over the world,” Brenda tells hello!, “but one of the strangest was a love letter from a man on n a farm in Australia asking h her to marry him. I think h he thought she would h have been good at mucking out his cowshed or someething. “Although Vera’s not looking for romancee, who knows what’s around d the corner for her? When you meet someone you don’t know much about, you’re keen to find out more,” adds Brenda, whose pairing with handsome sidekick DS Aiden Healy, played by heart-throb Kenny Doughty, has brought crime writer Ann Cleeves’s best-selling novels to life. DON’T MISS THIS WEEK… TELEVISION SEX EDUCATION The comedy drama makes a welcome return for a second series. It continues the adventures of Otis (Asa Butterfield), who doles out advice at school that he himself has been given from his sex therapist mother (Gillian Anderson, right). This series sees him navigate his relationship with his girlfriend while new kids in town threaten to challenge the status quo. On Netflix from 17 January.

BOOK NOW PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL The Broadway musical adaptation of the hit film Pretty Woman struts into the West End next month, with Aimie Atkinson and Danny Mac (together, left) leading the cast as unlikely soulmates Vivian and Edward. Brenda as her on-sscreen character Vera with sidekick DS Aiden Healy, played by Kenny K Doughty (above). While her portrayal of the detective has attracted an offer of marriage from one fan, the actress, who tu urns 74 next month, is more than happy with her husband Micha ael Mayhew (together, below left)

FITTING G THE BILL Compared to her on-screen persona, Brenda is fitter – she ran the first of her three marathons in 2002, aged 56 – and far more stylish. “It’s the clever design of the costumes that makes me look bigger. Everyything Vera wears has pockets, and because she doesn’t carry a bag, her pockets are stuffed with all sorts of th hings, which makes her look even wider. “Mind you, I am m growing into the part. Seriously, though, you’ve got to be in shape to play Vera. It’s a 15-hour day, so it’s pretty full-on. You can’t burn the candle at both ends.” With a penchan nt for comedy as well as hard-hitting drama, Brenda’s next starring role will be in the new six-part ITV sitcom Kate and Kolo, in which she plays the owner of an old-fashioned café in a neglected British seaside town who becomes friends with an asylum-seeking African doctor, played by Jimmy Akingbola. Would she ever consider doing a reality show? “I enjoy watching them, but I think if I tried Dancing on Ice, I’d die, and I don’t really want to go yet. And if I was asked to do the Argentine tango on Strictly, I might take someone’s knee out. “I consider myself blessed in that I have no ambition. I’ve never been one to want the moon and the stars.” INTERVIEW: SALLY MORGAN
