Her heart was a secret garden and the walls were very high.

MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

Who inspires you and why? My mom. She is the hardest working woman I know and she came from nothing but yet gave my family a life that we never could have imagined. She is constantly looking for ways to better herself and her family and she is truly so inspirational Do you have a charitable cause you care about? I have several I care about a couple of them are: stopping sex trafficking, epilepsy awareness, and creating equality for everyone through LGBTQ+ causes & groups and non-radical feminism Do you prefer selfies or camera shots and why? It really depends on the photo, I think sometimes a good selfie can be just as good as a camera shot, just depends! What do you think is wrong with the world? In short, the hatred that so many hold in their heart- how someone lives their life, who someone loves or what they do shouldn’t be anyones business as long as nobody is getting hurt in the process. Nowadays people are to concerned with everyone else’s lives and not their own.

Do you have a favorite number? Not really but I am drawn to 5, 25 & 17

Interview “As much negativity as there is in the world there is also so much love and sometimes we forget how much love can be spread.”

What’s right in the world? As much negativity as there is in the world there is also so much love and sometimes we forget how much love can be spread.

Who is your favorite role model and why? I don’t really believe in making someone my “role model” because putting someone onto a pedestal isn’t fair, everyone has struggles and everyone has accomplishments but the people I look up too are as far as my career goes is: Ashley Graham, Jessica Alba & Rachel Zoe

14 | Jan-February 2019

Thoughts on city life versus country life? I love the country but I also love the city, something in the middle would be perfect for me. Where will you be in exactly one year from this moment? I don’t really know but I know I want to be happy, healthy and surrounded by love Is it ever okay to cheat at anything, why or why not? No, if you aren’t happy with someone why would you stay? And if you ever loved that person at all why would you want to ruin their trust, security and self-esteem for one night of selfishness? What would you wear on the perfect date? Depends, my idea of a perfect date is just being with someone I love so whatever I feel best in that day One thing you’d change, if you ruled the world? Definitely more than one thing to change.... My story in less than 5 minutes... I am born & raised from Calgary, Alberta, Canada which is also where I live part-time, the other time I am travelling all over the world for modelling. Throughout my high school experience I was bullied pretty severally and transferred high schools for my graduating year. I have been modelling for 5 years but prior to that I got 3 diplomas in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Safety & Personal Training. I am a business owner of Boss Babe Movement- a fitness company, a partner of Anonymous Assholes Apparel- a clothing line and I am launching a new business in the next couple of months, I am also a huge advocate for mental health as I suffer from PTSD, Anxiety & Depression. I live my life hoping to help others in any way I can.

Should books be determined to be outdated and no longer functional? Absolutely not, I love reading and books are so inspiring, educational and in a world consumed in social media they are some of the only things that will take you off your phone.

Favorite teams Hockey- Calgary Flames NFL- Kansas City Chiefs Baseball- Toronto Blue Jays Basketball- Toronto Raptors

Do you care at all about Astrology? Yes, I look at it religiously

ICELAND I

FIVE AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL THINGS TO VISIT

bounded down the steps of the plane, desperate to take refuge from the brisk Icelandic chill in our awaiting bus. It wasn’t a conventional week-long holiday, far from the shining sun of Spain or the cute cafes of Paris, but it would turn out to be the greatest trip of my life. Iceland has the population of just over 300,000, around the same as Leicester, but that seems to only add to its mystery. In recent years, hotels and travel has become expensive, but if you search for cheap hotels, group deals and excursion deals, it can be affordable. This isn’t a blog about transparent commercialised landmarks you must visit in order to validate your trip, but a quick guide into the five things I loved about this mesmerising country and cannot recommend highly enough.

MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

The Blue LagoonThe first stop on our brief tour of Iceland, the famous Blue Lagoon. My expectations had actually been fairly low for this section of my journey, as I couldn’t help but picture a glorified heated swimming pool, but I could not have been more wrong. The entrance price itself was rather steep, with tickets starting from around one hundred pounds, but if you’re travelling in a group I would still highly recommend it. Most of the best sights in Iceland won’t cost you much money, so this is definitely one to fork out for. As with most locations in Iceland, you need to drive to reach the Lagoon, as many major cities and landmarks are separated by miles of desolate wasteland. If money is no object, I would recommend investing in a tour guide for your trip. For directions, check out this link. 18 | Jan-February 2019

Once I emerged from the changing rooms and made the short walk outside to the Lagoon itself, I realised how wrong I had been. In that moment, what had been the least exciting attraction in my head became one of the best. The translucent milky-blue water stretched out as far as the eye could see, bordered by huge rocks. Plumes of steam poured from the surface of the water, evaporating into the biting chill on the Iceland air. I dipped my toe in and warmth spread through my foot, the shocking difference between the brisk chill in the air, and the pleasant heat of the water was an experience. As we jumped in, I could only really describe it as the largest and best hot tub I have ever been in. For the next hour we swam around, exploring every nook and cranny of the Lagoon, from the mini waterfalls, to the pots of clay left to paint your body. We were told

that the clay and water were supposedly good for your skin, but in all honesty, it was just good fun. If you want to eat/drink here, there is a lagoon-side bar for drinks, and places to purchase snacks indoors. The Northern LightsSadly, this is the one part of my list that you have no control over. I’m sure most people travel to Iceland purely for a short glimpse of the stunning aurora borealis, but the elusive beast doesn’t always appear. There is no guarantee you’ll see it if you visit, but all I can say is it’s worth the risk. Organise loads of other things to do, and then give yourself the best chance to see it, that’s all you can do. There are a few different ways to enhance your chances: Pick a good spot- always research the best places to see the lights before you go and plan accordingly.

No light pollution- Don’t expect to be able to see the lights from your hotel window in Reykjavik. An abundance of light pollution from street lights and houses will mask the phenomenon completely. Pick a good timeNo, I don’t mean night time, I’m hoping that’s a conclusion you’ll come to without my help, but the time of the year does matter. The lights appear far more between October and March, so if possible, plan your trip between those months. Be prepared to wait- The one thing you simply must have is patience. You might not see the lights straight away, you may not even see them in the first hour, or first day. Be patient and hopefully you’ll be in luck. I have to admit, I’m typing with a strong sense of hypocrisy at the moment, as I did give up on rule four myself. Our little party trekked away from our hotel to a quaint hillside spot, famed for being a decent place to view the Northern Lights. We were away from any light pollution, at the perfect time of the year, and there was nothing. Not a glimmer of green in the sky at all. The first hour ticked by, then the second and third. It was freezing cold, our hands were numb, we were cold and miserable. Half our group decided to give up and call it a night as we headed back to our hotel, disgruntled at our horrible bad luck. We arrived back home and got ready for bed, drawing the curtains on a disappointing day, and that’s when we saw it.

“IT’S HERE!” The rest of my room leapt onto my bed and pressed their faces to the window in joy at the faint colourful waves. We sprinted outside, forgetting even to put any shoes on, and ran away from the hotel towards open ground. The sky was now dancing with colour, greens and purples and blues flowing together in such contrast to the black canvas behind. It was, and still is, the most natural and beautiful thing I have ever seen. EyjafjallajokullNo, I haven’t just mashed my keyboard, this is in fact the name of a famous Icelandic volcano. You may remember it from the 2010 eruption, after which 600 people were evacuated from their homes and the resulting ash caused air travel disruption for weeks. But don’t let that put you off, when Eyjafjallajokull is dormant, it really is a unique place to visit.

It wasn’t hot. In fact, after the hours of trekking and climbing to the very top of the mountain, we were met with a barrage of snow (Sam was not best pleased). The view from the summit was staggering as we looked down on the landscape below, a mix of white snow and black lava fields, constantly contrasting each other. We were able to look down the mouth of the volcano too, it’s innards hollowed out by past eruptions. I can’t say I’d trekked up many volcanoes before that, and I doubt I will get the chance again, but I’m very glad I did. The volcano is situated around 90 miles from the capital Reykjavic, so you will either have to rent a car, or take advantage of some online excursion packages. Nordic Visitor offers a three-day volcano tour, two nights’ accommodation, airport transfers, guided superjeep tour and entrance to the

We packed food and water into our backpacks and met in front of the hotel bright and early ahead of our climb to the summit of the volcano. My friend Sam emerged in an Arsenal shirt and Hawaiian swimming trunks to a chorus of laughs from the rest of the group. “What?” he asked. “It’s a volcano, it’s going to be hot at the top, right?” MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

Blue Lagoon for just over £400 per person. The climb itself is free, and you are allowed to take as many pictures as you like, the only thing you have to sort is the travel there and back. The GeysersPossibly the strangest item on our agenda was the geysers. Geyser basically means “gusher” in Icelandic, and has been a natural phenomenon for the past 10,000 years. The Great Geysir, the most famous of all, has become sporadic in recent years, but you shouldn’t have to wait too long to see some action. Strokkur, another nearby geyser erupts every five or so minutes, so you’re guaranteed to see something very quickly. We had only been standing next to Strokkur for a few minutes, desperately trying to remove our gloves in order to get our cameras at the ready, before it went off. A huge two metre wide jet of powerful water erupted from the ground, shooting up twenty metres into the air before plummeting back down to earth. For a ‘natural’ phenomenon it was one of the strangest things I have ever seen and definitely well worth a look for any travellers. Tickets and tours around the geysers start at around fifty pounds, which I would say is affordable and worth it. Just exploreI cannot express this enough, please, if you do visit Iceland, just explore the landscape. Some of the most memorable moments I had on my visit came from just travelling around the country via tour bus. Whether it was driving through the jet black, molten lava fields, or climbing hills and mountains, just appreciating the natural beauty this 20 | Jan-February 2019

place has to offer is a privilege. I have listed a few quick examples of easy things you can see for almost no money at all. The lava fields- Driving between major towns and cities, you will spot miles and miles of old molten lava fields. While there isn’t much to actually explore, it’s well worth a look as you drive through. Glacier walking- You can book glacier walking tours, in which you strap spikes to your boots and walk across icy plains with a local guide. It’s an interesting, unique and fun experience, so if you have some money spare, do it.

Waterfalls-Iceland is famed for its hundreds of waterfalls, and while you may not want to visit many of them, I would definitely take the time to see at least one or two. They are popular attractions due to their beauty, with some even featuring their own mini rainbows within the waterfall itself. Iceland is still my best ever holiday to date, and I can’t wait to return there in the next few years. I cannot recommend it highly enough and urge you to make it your next holiday. My list is by no means an instruction of what you HAVE to do, but merely a bunch of stuff I whole-heartedly enjoyed, I hope you enjoy them too.

Hosted by, and named after the Adult Video News magazine, the AVN show is a wild party that celebrates all aspects of the adult entertainment industry. Dubbed the “Oscars of Porn”, the AVN Awards show recognizes the performers of the adult entertainment industry. The upcoming show will be at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, NV, from Jan 23rd to 26th, 2019. The Adult Video News magazine is the trade journal of the porn industry, and the main sponsor of the Las Vegas show. While the “AVN show” gets the most name recognition by far, the event is actually three shows combined into one. The Adult Novelty Expo (ANE) is the place for various vendors display their lubes, toys, lingerie, etc. This is open to the general public, of course. All sorts of intriguing products are displayed and sold, ranging from natural supplements for testosterone replacement, bath soaps shaped like body parts, to full-size, very realistic sex dolls, and a large selection of vibrators, stimulators, etc. In addition to the products, numerous colourful characters can be found here, such as leather-clad dominatrix, giving demonstrations on the finer points of flogging and bondage. Expect to see all manner of leather goods, whips, paddles and flogging gear available. The Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE) is where the per-

formers and general public get a chance to meet. This takes place at The Joint, a 4000 seat concert hall at the Hard Rock. The porn stars sign autographs, pose for photos, and sell DVD’s, etc. This is, without question, the loudest, most popular part of the entire event. This portion of the show really must be experienced to fully understand it. With many, many gorgeous young women dressed in their finest lingerie just waiting to talk to you and pose for photos, the pheromone level is off the chart here. With the porn performers here in the flesh, it certainly has a party atmosphere. Many performers will be here, signing posters, selling DVDs, and chatting with and posing for photos with fans. The Hard Rock goes all out for this event. No surprise, as the AVN brings a lot of visitors to the hotel and casino. Total attendance for recent years has been about 30,000 or more, over the four days. It all culminates with the actual AVN Awards ceremony, held on the final Saturday evening. This is where the performers are recognized for their on-screen talents. The 36th annual AVN Awards takes place on Saturday, Jan 26, 2019, at The Joint. As with the Oscars, this is closed to the public, being by invitation only. For those that appreciate beautiful women, the AVN/ANE/AEE is the place to be! Numerous adult stars, most just barely dressed, and willing to pose for photographs makes for a truly astounding time. 04 Sometimes I notice the younger generations not respecting their parents or elders, and this makes me upset. I don’t have the privilege of seeing my mom on a regular basis and this hurts to see. I think if we had more respect for everyone in the world it would be a better place.

05 I think people are more open minded then they use to be. This can create Greta change for the better. For example with modeling, girls with tattoos have opportunities to do well now unlike in the past.

mit it or not, fall in the high fat diet category, and thus finding something to combat it, is a major win. Pectin and polyphenols are the main substances found in lemons, and there is a number research available, that shows those having weight loss and appetite suppressing qualities. Pectin gives a feeling fullness much like other soluble dietary fibers. This may help reduced your calorie intake. If you find yourself struggling with always being hungry, then this is worth looking at. I think is a great (and easy) idea to add lemon water into your diet without changing much else around. Good luck everyone let me know how you feel after this :-)

LEMON WATER

I

BY RANIA GAMAL

am sure we all heard about it, but not many of us did it. We need a reminder from time to time to remeber this, please drink lemon water in the morning. I recommend replacing your morning coffee with lemon water for at least 2 weeks. I am going to start doing it again also... tried it for two or 3days and stopped... but I really did feel better in the morning than when drinking coffee...so this time I am definitely going to try it for longer time and I hope you will do it with me:-) I am sure you’ll see lot of positive benefits to your energy, mood and health. Here is why: I have read that in cases where toxins have built up in the body, the lemon juice and peel have cleansing properties. Lemons are

high in Vitamin C which is essential for normal growth and development. A single lemon contains around 30-40 mg of Vitamin C. Vitamin C has been studied extensively and shown to have a myriad of health benefits from protecting against prenatal problems to cardiovascular disease, eye diseases, skin wrinkles, and immune system deficiencies. It acts as an antioxidant and helps protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. And that is not all. Less Appetite & Weight Loss One of the other things that I have read about drinking hot water with lemon or cold for refreshment is that it significantly reduces the weight gain associated with a high fat diet. Most people, whether they want to ad-

Stop comparing yourself to others and learn how to love yourself instead, learn how to accept compliments from others. There is nothing wrong with admiring someone’s figure or look, I do it all the time, it helps me to build my motivation to be as fit as that person. Stop the negative self-images and unhealthy habits, compliment yourself instead!! Each day compliment one new thing. For example today I have great fresh looking skin. Wear clothes that make you look and feel great about your body. If you feel amazing in what you wear then go for it and wear exactly that. Find confidence in strength. Learn how to appreciate the things you can do. Dance, run or weight lifting... whatever you are fabulous at. There are so many options and choices of workout classes, so ladies no excuses! why you are not in the gym, doing your body & your mind good. Give your self-credit for what your body achieves everyday single day :-) Walk to words what you want achieve...don’t give up and eventually you will get there. You will be very happy with the achievements and your new rocking body. MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

he people that inspire me the most are the people who are selfless. People who put a lot of time, energy and care into saving and helping animals/children etc....around the world.

Martha Stewart of course! The Woman knows how to do everything!

My favorite charity is my local animal shelter. Warren County Humane Association in Ohio.

Number 5

I prefer professional camera shots, but filtered selfies are fun too! Xenophobia is a major problem with our world. Beautiful cultures, iconic scenery and people who make the world a better place. Yes, I do believe books will be outdated at some point in the future, but for now, I prefer holding a book and turning pages.

I always root for the home team! Ohio State, Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals

No I don’t really care about Astrology but I do find it interesting.. I definitely choose to live in the country. I’m a country girl! It’s private and I can walk around nude lol, but the city life every now and then is so much fun. One year from now I want to be overseas shooting with a couple of my favorite photographers in my 3 favorite destinations ... Santorini, Cape Town and Maldives. It is not ok the cheat on a significant other. But, cheating on a diet every once in a while is OK. Lol

Sexy sundress. I know this sounds a little cheesy, but I would end war. I’d love to live in a world where everyone gets along and treats each other with kindness and compassion. I was born and raised on the outskirts of Cincinnati Ohio. I attended college in Dayton Ohio and got a degree in Occupational Therapy. I’ve been working in the occupational therapy field for years, and I just recently pursued modeling. I’ve been traveling a lot modeling and really enjoying it! Well the only actress tall enough to play me would be Nicole Kidman but I would prefer Margot Robbie. For my leading man I’d like someone who’s extremely talented and has a great sense of humor, so I’m gonna go with...Tom Hanks!

INTERVIEW.. IVY FERGUSON

Photography by Jonathan Perez

Ivy defines the Southern California look, but her way started in Canada. “I grew up in the middle of nowhere, close to Alaska! Mountains, glaciers and moose everywhere.” Ivy recognizes herself not as a “country girl” - rather the “small town cutie”, as the eldest of 4 children Ivy was born on December 9th 1992 in the small Town of Smithers. She was raised in the beautiful, rural surroundings of northern British Columbia. That backed her up with a confident, easy going, nature loving, down-to-earth personality. WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? Myself, I never had someone to look up to. I took it upon myself to travel and pursue my dreams. DO YOU HAVE A CHARITABLE CAUSE YOU CARE ABOUT? I care deeply and passionately about animal rights and veganism. I hope someday to represent Peta! DO YOU PREFER SELFIES OR CAMERA SHOTS AND WHY? I prefer camera shots because my happy place is in front of the camera! WHAT DO YOU THINK IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD? The way animals are treated unfairly for mass consumption.

GAMBLING

Omair Abbas, 18 was found dead in the River Ely in Cardiff almost 2 weeks after being reported missing, April 13th. Gambled away more than 5k which led to him taking his life, an inquest heard. A coroner raised concern about the ease with which young people can access online gambling. He had confided in friends about depression and suicidal thoughts. £5,445.

hat is potentially the most worrying for parents is the fact that their children seem to be able to gamble before they even reach the legal age of 18. GamCare, the national organisation for gambling, released the figures that 40% of under 16’s who gamble do so in betting shops, and a further 33% of those aged between 16 and 17 follow the same trend. The rate of high school gambling problems has surpassed adults 2 to 1, as teenage gambling is rising in Britain. The birth of internet gambling in the 90’s has created an ease of access for young teenagers wishing to gamble online. Gambling has evolved into a common pass time among a generation of young adults. 2007-201040-50% increase in young person gambling, showing that 16-24 had the biggest increase in gambling problems. 2013- over 2000 1115 year olds surveyed from over 100 UK schools. 15% had engaged in some form of gambling in the past week. turned 200 to 300 before I lost it all, including £100 of my dad’s money. When I could finally have my own account, I deposited part of my wage every few weeks that I made from working. Again, I would build it up and then lose it again. My mum found out through my bank statements that hundreds of pounds were going back and forth. At university, I would gamble the last of my allowance on betting, meaning I couldn’t always buy food. I put all my accounts on a 6 month ban when I realised that every time I win money, I end up losing more. I put £5 on every now and then but apart from that I’ve stopped. The most I’ve lost is around £300. I think I have an addicted personality and when I’ve got nothing else to do I can always gamble. I think the adverts on TV have a big impact, especially the football ones. I don’t think I would gamble anywhere near as much if there weren’t adverts on TV. When you turn 18, gambling is one of those things you’re allowed to do and when your friends are all gambling it makes you really want to. I learned to play poker at 8, and I was 10 when I first played online.

The first time I gambled online was with my dad, after he taught me how to play Texas holdem. He thought I was good enough to play by myself but he would still watch over me.

GRAHAM V. WEIRHead of Responsible Gambling

A couple of years later I would log into his account while he was at work and play £2 tournaments with the money in his account which was about £20. He was never that bothered, unless I lost it all. I would continue to win and lose money, build up the account to £200 then lose it all. Years later I started online sports betting, getting my mum to make me an account to get the bonus sites usually give you. When I thought I could beat the roulette system I used my dad’s card, it worked to start with and I

Young males 18-24 have a higher risk from developing gambling problems than others. Gambling sites should all have age verification (AV) procedures and checks in place to ensure that people that open new accounts have their details checked to prevent underage access. We know that some people get into difficulty gambling when they spend more time or money than they should. We think it is important that when someone starts gambling they understand that it’s not a route to getting rich quickly. Gambling is

not a subject that is on the school curriculum, so young adults may not understand that they should only look at gambling as something they should do in moderation. It’s important to provide support and funding for groups that are identified as a risk, so this was something that aligns with Ladbrokes responsible gambling policy principles of providing tools and information to keep gamblers safe. We want young gamblers to understand that something like chasing losses is not something they should do. If they lose £20, they should not spend another £20 trying to win it back, invariably that just leads to bigger losses. I would like the next generation of gamblers in the UK to understand that gambling should be a fun and exciting leisure pursuit, while understanding the potential dangers of spending too much time or money when they do so. If we can educate people correctly, then we can have a positive impact on future rates of problem gambling. DR JEFFREY DEREVENSKY INTERVIEWGambling has become normalised in our society and it is viewed as a socially acceptable pass-time now. I think teens believe they are smarter than most adults and can easily win. Once they start to lose, they want to catch up. There is this false illusion of control. Mobile gambling is a huge concern due to the accessibility, availability, and relatively low costs to play. TV adverts provide triggers for teens to gamble. Registered sites require some form of ID check but there are hundreds of sites that just ask how old you are. These games build upon video game technology, implying that the more you play, the better you get but this is not true.

GAMCARETwo gambling operators have donated towards GamCare’s work with young people, enabling the creation of three new regional ‘youth hubs’ in Bristol, Birmingham and the North West, as well as the expansion of youth education services in London. These donations will provide resources for additional regional youth outreach workers to provide free of charge workshops and training in their local areas, as well as materials and screening tools to assist local youth services and teachers in identifying young people at risk. Each youth hub will also provide a structure for referrals to treatment for young people who are experiencing or vulnerable to gambling related harm. Dirk Hansen, CEO at GamCare, says: “Our work aims to ensure that young people can access honest, accurate and relevant information about gambling and make informed choices about whether they choose to gamble. As a result of this programme, young people will also be able to access help and support tailored for them should they need it.” •

Education - Raising awareness of problem gambling amongst young people themselves, as well as key individuals working in the youth sector

Advice – Providing advice and support to young people affected by problem gambling or at-risk, in engaging and interactive formats

Treatment - Providing treatment to young people affected by problem gambling, or impacted by someone else’s gambling

Communication – Evaluating our work and communicating our knowledge of problem gambling and young people

8AM TO MIDNIGHT, 7 DAYS A WEEK “Young people may have trouble differentiating between the concepts of: luck, fate, chance and probability… Young people are motivated to gamble for a number of different reasons including: for entertainment, to win money, the sensation of winning, the thrill of the game, or to escape stress/problems. Much less is known about why some individuals become problem gamblers while for others gambling remains a casual activity without harmful consequences. Key social risk factors which may increase the likelihood of a child or young person developing a gambling problem include: having parents who introduce them to gambling at an early age; having parents who are heavy gamblers themselves; having friends who are problem gamblers.” MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

DRINK SPIKE Buying a drink for someone in a club or bar should be a fairly innocuous gesture, however the issue of drink spiking has slipped under the radar as an epidemic in Britain. A crime survey by ITV in 2014 showed that one in ten people has had their drink tampered with, and Swansea University claim that one in three of their students have endured the same treatment. Although it is impossible to be sure on the numbers and statistics around drink spiking, it is clearly a huge problem which needs to be dealt with. Grace was nineteen years old and out in London celebrating with her friends when she was the victim of a drink spiking attack. Her night went from sharing drinks with mates, to drifting in and out of consciousness, covered in blood. This is her story.Grace arrived at Tiger Tiger in London, already merry off a few drinks and ready for an enjoyable night out. She wriggled through the crowd towards the bar with a group of her friends. The girls ordered their drinks before Grace noticed four men staring at them from a few metres away. The men wandered over and started to make conversation. “Can I get you a drink?” one of the men asked a few of the girls, who all turned him down and moved away. The man then turned to Grace, who was slightly more drunk than the rest of her group, and hassled her to accept the beverage. 90 | Jan-February 2019

IT IS DIFFICULT TO EVER IDENTIFY SPIKING DUE TO THE NATURAL VARIATION IN FLAVOURS OF SERVED DRINKS.

“Go on, let me get you a drink,” he repeated to Grace. Before she could think or decline the offer, a straw was placed into the drink and ushered towards her mouth. In a sober state she would usually refuse such an offer from a stranger, but drunk and slightly intimidated, she took a sip, hoping that he would leave her alone afterwards. The girls quickly moved away from the man and his friends, instead heading over to the main floor and dancing together. It looked as if the night was back on track, and Grace was beginning to have a good time again. Grace awoke, tired and confused, lying on a cold, damp floor with her friend Jess looking down at her. She looked around, her vision blurred. The bathroom of the club came in and out of focus before she turned, vomited on the floor, and then slipped out of consciousness once more. Pitch black turned to light again as Grace came to. “Let’s go get you some food, it’ll make you feel better,” Jess shouted to her friend, with panic etched into her voice. The two girls left the club and stumbled down the road, with Jess doing her best to keep her friend upright. “Looks like you slags can’t handle your drink!” a stranger shouted from across the street. “My friend’s drink was spiked!” Jess yelled back in anger.

“GRACE AWOKE, TIRED AND CONFUSED, LYING ON A COLD, DAMP FLOOR WITH HER FRIEND JESS LOOKING DOWN AT HER. SHE LOOKED AROUND, HER VISION BLURRED. THE BATHROOM OF THE CLUB CAME IN AND OUT OF FOCUS BEFORE SHE TURNED, VOMITED ON THE FLOOR, AND THEN SLIPPED OUT OF CONSCIOUSNESS ONCE MORE.”

The man continued to laugh to himself, making a few comments about the girls’ clothes before striding off into the night without a single thought for their safety. Once again, Grace slipped out of consciousness. Darkness. She woke up inside Burger King, with an employee talking urgently to Jess. “She can’t stay in here, not in that state, I’m sorry.” Darkness again. “Grace your nose is bleeding!” Jess said, wiping up the blood now streaming from her friends’ face. Darkness. “Ooh someone’s been doing cocaine, tonight haven’t they?” a random drunk woman who claimed to be a nurse exclaimed. Darkness. “Grace the ambulance is here!” Darkness. Grace awoke in a hospital waiting room, unable to remember almost any of the night. A nurse came by to tell her that her pulse was normal. Two of Jess’s friends had arrived to drive them home. This kind of drink spiking in clubs is not as uncommon as people like to think. It is near impossible to determine how often it happens, simply because it is difficult to distinguish between someone who has genuinely been spiked and someone who has just had one too many. Dr John Douse works at OGT Forensic Ltd and has been a forensic expert for over a decade. He has particular expertise in alcohol and drug related crimes, including drink spiking. “Alcohol is likely to be the number one agent used for spiking drinks often in the form of vodka, which can have little or no distinctive taste. “Any drug can also be used to spike another person’s drink, with sedatives likely to be prevalent if control of that person is the desired aim. Therefore, the benzodiazepines have a rich history of use for this purpose.”

Within a couple of minutes of our chat, I already get the sense from Dr Douse that clamping down on spiking is not an easy task, but it is something he feels passionately about. “Spiking is carried out as a prank (for “fun”), for malicious reasons (jealousy), to embarrass or incriminate (drunk driving), or for taking advantage of an individual while intoxicated for a variety of purposes whether it’s theft, assault, sexual gratification or even murder. “Young people especially need to keep themselves safe out there, now more than ever,” he warns. The Guardian conducted a survey of 750 people, across 16 cities to determine how prevalent the issue of drink spiking and date rape was. One in four women interviewed claimed to have had their drink spiked in the past, and according to the survey there were around 30 female victims per week. This was over a decade ago, and still nothing has been done to crunch down on this hidden wave of abuse. I talked to Grace about her ordeal and how she believes drink spiking should be tackled. “When the paramedic and a staff member of the club asked who did it I pointed out the man who was putting the straw in my drink and they kicked him out, but the other men he was with were allowed to stay. The main thing that affected me was what little was done by the people in the club and the hospital to help me.” So maybe this is the crux of the issue. Grace was fine and healthy in the end, and was able to go home, but hat steps were taken by anyone with authority to prevent this kind of thing happening again.

The man who Grace herself pointed out was merely told to leave the club. Why was he not detained? Why was he not searched? Why were the police not called? I contacted Tiger Tiger who declined to comment. It seems clear that the biggest issue with drink spiking is the lack of taking claims seriously. Police guidelines state that ‘drink spiking is illegal, even if an attack has not been carried out. It can result in a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison for anyone found guilty’. Despite the potential punishment, there doesn’t seem to be any fear or likelihood of being caught. Grace said: “To prevent this kind of thing I think people should be searched more thoroughly by security, not just doing it quickly to get the job done. I do think more should have been done to punish the guy as he was only asked to leave the club, meaning he could just have easily gone on to the next club and done it to someone else. “In my opinion he should have been investigated and be banned from clubs and bars in the future. It shocked me how easily he could do it again.” Since researching this topic, I’ve come across people who doubt the very existence of the problem of drink spiking. Women who have their drinks tampered with often show almost identical symptoms to someone who has simply had one or two too many. This is actually one of the biggest issues we face, as so many attacks slip under the radar, written off as just another boozer who has overdone it again.

“ALCOHOL IS LIKELY TO BE THE NUMBER ONE AGENT USED FOR SPIKING DRINKS OFTEN IN THE FORM OF VODKA, WHICH CAN HAVE LITTLE OR NO DISTINCTIVE TASTE.” MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

To try and prove this theory wrong, I contacted a Facebook group asking for any victims of drink spiking in my nearby town to come forward with their stories. Within a few hours I had multiple women sending private messages about their own experiences and their disgust towards them. Kylie Louise was 25, and out drinking at a bar in Rochester with her friends. After a couple of glasses of wine, Kylie started to feel strange. She never felt ill off small amounts of alcohol so she knew immediately that something wasn’t right, and proceeded to call herself a taxi. That was the last thing Kylie remembered of her night. She woke up on the floor of her hallway, violently shivering. She climbed the stairs, still shaking from the freezing cold, before climbing into bed and drifting back off to sleep. Kylie woke up hours later, still experiencing these frightening cold flushes. She wandered downstairs to find her glasses on the front doorstep, and her keys still hanging from the lock in the door. “I live in a dodgy area so I’m very lucky no one took the keys, or came into the house. It could have ended so much worse,” she said. Emily Wallis was 44 when her drink was spiked. Her name has been changed for the purposes of this story. Emily was attending an event at a local pub in Rochester where she was also looking after two autistic children. After a couple of glasses of wine, she began to feel dizzy and light headed. She thought she saw a man lurking around her drink, but her vision

92 | Jan-February 2019

was blurred and she had lost control. Her friends put her in a taxi and sent her home. “I called the police, and they weren’t interested at all. I could have been so much worse,” she said. These stories are just the tip of the iceberg of a problem we choose to ignore. The fact that clubs and police do very little to follow up of these incidents just throws the issue into a vicious cycle. If police don’t attempt to crack down on it more, then attackers have no fear of being caught and victims have no reason to report it. I contacted five local clubs to Emma and Kylie in Rochester. Out of the five, only one of them mentioned that they would call the police as part of their protocol in a drink spiking incident. Two refused to comment, and the others explained that they would provide attention to the victim, calling an ambulance if needed. One club even stated that they would “provide water, free of charge”. This epitomises what little interest is shown in spiking and how seriously clubs take it. There have been various products launched in the last ten years to prevent your drink from being spiked. Special test strips can be purchased, which will turn a certain colour if a drug is found in your drink. However, this does not combat alcohol spiking which is the most common form of drink tampering. Bottle caps and drink stoppers can also be bought online which seal the top of your drink. This ensures that no one can slip extra alcohol or drugs into your beverage while you aren’t

looking. Dr John Douse explains that young people out drinking, especially girls, should take care and be as safe as possible in clubs. “You should always remain in a group of friends who can take care of each other and ensure no one is left behind. One person becoming separated leaves them vulnerable to exploitation if they are inebriated, especially if they become stranded without a way home. “If someone you know is spiked, then putting them to bed can be a death sentence. This is because the gag reflex is prevented from working, and aspiration of vomit into the lungs can result in death by asphyxiation. Someone must put the victim in the recovery position and sit with them until they wake up.” It is without a doubt that everyone should be as careful as possible when out drinking, and take every precaution against spiking, however more must be done to proactively combat the problem rather than reacting to it. Putting the onus on victims to prevent attacks only normalises drink spiking and implies that it is their fault for not being responsible enough. Instead we should be combatting those who are doing the spiking itself, enforcing the laws in place and stamping out this vicious trend once and for all. Grace, Kylie, and Emily have all had their future nights out soured by the ordeals they endured. It appears that the only people who are truly punished in drink spiking situations are the victims themselves, with no repercussions for the attackers. Grace said: “Since then, I’ve been more suspicious of guys in clubs when accepting drinks and I always make

sure I’m the one taking it straight from the bar. I also drink a lot less so I’m less likely to be in that situation again.” Although they seem like sensible precautions to take, at what point are the victims sacrificing their own fun and free will to accommodate the risk of being spiked. Kylie admitted: “I haven’t drunk wine since and I hardly drink at all now.” Emily also agreed that she doesn’t drink much on nights out anymore, saying that “instead I drink at home mostly, or if I’m only with people I completely trust.” Grace in particular was fortunate that her friend Jess was there to keep her safe, and to fill in the blanks, but not everyone is that lucky, and until Police clamp down on drink spiking innocent victims are going to put in danger time and time again. I spoke to Jess Sharp to get the frightening chain of events from her perspective. Grace suddenly fell to the floor, her eyes rolling back in her head revealing chilling blank whiteness. Jess ran to her friend, desperately trying to pull her back to her feet, but to no avail. A couple of the girls haul her limp body into the toilets where they try to make her throw up whatever had been forced into her system. She couldn’t. The bathroom attendant called security who then told the girls they would have to wait outside. They urged Jess to give Grace as much water as possible and then get her some food. The police were not called. No help was given. “I can’t see! I can’t see!” Grace cried as her and Jess staggered down towards Burger King. They walked past crowds of people but not one stopped

to help. As the girls entered the restaurant, Grace sprinted off towards the toilets. As Jess burst through the door after her, Grace was being so violently sick that blood now poured from her nose.

Dr John Douse’s ten tips to preventing drink spiking: •

Jess desperately grabbed as much tissue as she could, trying to stem the blood flow as much as possible. Grace drifted in and out of consciousness, with Jess splashing water on her face to keep her awake as best she could.

Bang!

“Open the door please!” security called from outside the cubicle. Bang! Bang! The door smashed open and security forced the girls to leave. Jess looked up and down the street in panic. The coach home was about to leave but she knew that Grace wasn’t well enough. Not knowing what else to do, she called an ambulance and waited with her unconscious friend. “The hospital were rubbish. They didn’t do anything to help really, they just kept coming over to check Grace’s temperature. They didn’t really seem concerned at all,” Jess said. “The security got rid of the guy who spiked her straight away, but then they just literally left us on the street with no idea what to do.” By 5am Jess’ friends turned up to take the girls home. They helped Grace into the back of the car, covered her shivering body in blankets, and started the two-hour drive home.

Do not charge up before leaving home on litres of cheaper wine or spirits. This will initially give you a euphoric high and lower your inhibitions, but then unexpectedly “bite you” as your blood alcohol level later rises. Do not mix energy drinks with alcohol in any form especially spirits. These have been shown to cause “false sobriety” encouraging you to drink more. Do not gulp drinks, especially spirits, memory loss can occur at significantly lower alcohol levels than usually required to be achieved by heavy drinking. Do not exceed a modest level of total alcohol consumption especially if you are not a regular drinker. Remember that females, simply due to their physiology, suffer higher blood alcohol levels than males for a set alcohol consumption. Drink as low alcohol drinks as you can, slowly over prolonged periods and intersperse with non-alcoholic drinks. Always witness your drinks served by bar staff, maintain visual control of your drinks at all times, take your drinks wherever you go (including the rest room) and ruthlessly discard any drink left unattended or left out of you sight for any period. Never drink premixed “punches”. Stay in control of your behaviour and do not indulge in drinking games. Drink sour bitter tasting cocktails that can only be sipped in small quantities.Sweet luscious tropical flavoured cocktails (described often as “Alcopops”) invite rapid consumption due to the pleasure of the flavour and are particularly risky.

F WE WANT TO PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY IN THESE AREAS OF OUR SOCIETY, THEN WE MUST RECOGNIZE THAT THE STEREOTYPES ABOUT GENDER AND VIDEO GAME PERFORMANCE ARE NOT ONLY FALSE BUT ARE ALSO HARMFUL OUTSIDE OF GAMING CONTEXTS. By Michelle SportsX

W

hen it comes to marketing we often hear the phrase “sex sells” but could it be that gaming is a more preferred past time for men? Chris Wong, who writes for The Social Man, says some men prefer gaming to sex. In fact he shared findings of a recent study which “analyzed behavior and preference with dealing with stress of a sample population of 108 men and 211 women and discovered that nearly 29% or men preferred to engage in interactive virtual entertainment compared to having sex or watching porn.” Wait, did that say men prefer to use video games to relieve stress more than they prefer to use sex to relieve stress, or that they prefer to play video games to sex? Silly survey, sometimes they actually appear to say something but when examined more closely, say nothing of the sort. Okay so men prefer video games to sex (for relieving stress), what about women? Could it be that women, have found more satisfaction with the joystick of a video game than the one attached to their man? Could be.Back in 2011, researchers found that when it comes to satisfaction, women may actually prefer gaming to sex. Or at

least that’s what the survey appears to have found. Believe it or not Forbes shared Doritos commissioned the study and findingssuggest, “Women enjoy video games more than sex.” In an article that appeared on Forbes.com, Tracey John advised that out of 2052 people 49% of women play video games online, compared with 50% of men. “Of these female gamers, 84% said they “enjoy” gaming, 75% enjoy taking a bath, 71% enjoy shopping.” Yet only 70% of these women gamers say they enjoy sex. Only men need not fret because it’s not just sex that takes a backseat to fulfillment from a joystick, but other favorite past times such as working out, shopping and taking a bath may have all fallen to the wayside, in favor of video gaming. Do we tend to think of men when it comes to opting for video games and see women more inclined to shoe shop? Additionally, are we more likely to think that men are better at video games than women? We may think men have the upper hand when it comes to gaming onlyit’s really not true. In fact, in a recent study conducted by researchers Rabindra Ratan, assistant professor in the Department of Media and Information at ComArtSci, along with first-author Cuihua Cindy Shen at the University

of California, Davis, and other co-authors, findings showed that the myth behind men out-performing when it comes to video games over females is simply not true. Rabin believes that we often perpetuate falsehoods by believing in them and thus can actually have an impact on the overall reality so according to Rabin; we ought to get educated about the facts. Men are not superior when it comes to the battle of the sexes in gaming. “If we want to promote gender equality in these areas of our society, then we must recognize that the stereotypes about gender and video game performance are not only false but are also harmful outside of gaming contexts,” Rabindra Ratan, assistant professor in the Department of Media and Information at ComArtSci said after she completed research to determine whether men and women differ when it comes to advancement in video gaming. Read the full case study and learn more about the research findings. So what does all this mean? Well, one thing’s for sure researchers’ sure do a lot of research on gaming and sex. Studies can only tell us so much. One way to set the record straight could be to challenge your mate to a video game and incorporate sex acts into the mix. That’s surely going to allow you to reach new levels! MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

ow do you deal with difficult situations? Often men have found themselves in dire need of some sort of relief from the work and family life. The expectations put on them by society over their daily life leads to stress and if not handled, could escalate to depression. So in a bid to get their relief, men have turned to pornography, besides the normal bottle and sports games. Sadly, life always gives us lemons and sometimes, the sourness becomes too much we no longer need to make lemonade. The only option for ‘sweet relaxing’ relief, therefore, becomes watching porn. Seeing the results, the once in a while form of relief takes root in our minds and it turns into an addiction. Any time when faced with difficult situations causing negative emotions, you just get your laptop or phone and get searching. And oh, that’s another reason why men have become porn addicts. The digital era has paved way for over 300 million porn sites. That is quite a collection to browse before you run out of anything to watch. Apart from that, watching porn releases oxytocin, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and testosterone which give off the brief good feeling. After all, who doesn’t want to feel good? After this habit becomes an addiction, most men fail to recover. Why? This is because, as men, there is an image to protect and it does not involve being a porn addict. The outcome, therefore, becomes a secret life hidden from family and friends. A life full of shame that even if you wanted help you wouldn’t risk how others would react. Also, the constant self- assurance that others are doing it and men are wired to react to such stuff, only makes it worse. In fact, men choose to believe that porn is made for their own gain. And that is definitely wrong!

THE DOWNSIDE

• TAKE NOTE OF WHAT TRIGGERS THE URGE Watching porn never happens miraculously. There is something that triggers the thought which leads to men watching it. For example, stress, being alone and having sexual fantasies can be the reason why the urge to watch porn is insatiable. The next step will be finding alternative solutions to these triggers.

Other side effects of watching it are erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and long hours doing nothing but poisoning your brain with more porn. Now, given that sex and intimacy in a relationship is important, men should abstain from watching porn and if you have already started you should stop for the sake of your marriage.

Take the stress situation, one can take a walk, go to the gym or gather the guys and play some poker to relief the stress. If you have a lot of free time at your disposal, find something to do.

Watching porn has its own effects and unlike the brief moment of pleasure, they are horrifying. And even though you will not be blind or grow hair on your palms, pornography could be the reason your marriage is failing. It reprograms the brain to weird sexual fantasies and to the extreme, your wife will not be enough to satisfy you.

HOW TO STOP

Regardless of how many videos and images you have watched, you can still come back from this dark abyss through these easy to follow steps; • COME UP WITH A RESOLUTION Making a resolution to stop watching pornography is a way men can prepare their brain for another reprogram, this time without the porn parameter. Moreover, it is a way of accepting it is a problem and the first step towards redemption. However, for those men who have tried several times to quit and have failed, they can attest to the fact that making resolutions won’t be your final answer as it may be hard to follow through. Ideally, you must take this step before proceeding with other ways to end this bad habit. • BLOCK THOSE SITES Seems extreme don’t you think? Well, not really. Being here, reading this article means that you are already fed up with how pornography has taken control of your life. Meaning, extreme measures could be your way out. There are software developed to block this sites but they still give you control over which site to access and which one to block. Being a man, it is only fair to believe that once you set your mind towards cutting off this habit, it is easier to avoid sliding back. So get yourself freedom software, the Cold Turkey or any other software within your reach and start the porn detox process

Essentially, do not give in to the thought that only porn will cure the triggers. Just find alternatives and gradually, it will get out of the system. • JOIN A GROUP Just like drug addicts have support groups, you can also get help in the same way. Open up to your friends or join a group. The aim is to achieve accountability. If you still find it hard to speak to people face to face, there are online communities that are just as effective. Such communities are like the NoFap which is a forum to help people quit masturbation- which comes as a package deal to watching porn. Unfortunately, it’s not in men’s nature to open up and it will take a lot of courage and motivation to make the effort. • UNDERTAKE NEW HABITS Replacing porn addiction with a positive habit such as meditation or exercising isn’t a bad idea. It will be the easiest way to counterattack the porn addiction and will yield positive fruits. You can even try to socialize with other people and allow the conversations to steer you away from the porn. Additionally, take up a hobby with some sense of accomplishment or can be renewed to help you remain on track. Summing up, many men have tried to win against this habit but have had no luck due to lack of commitment or failure to open up about it. Therefore, take the leap of faith and let people hold you accountable so that they can help yourself to emerge victorious in addition to the above ways.

INTERVIEW Q: Who inspires you and why? A: My parents inspire me with everything that they have sacrificed for me and have gone above and beyond for friends and family. Q: Do you have a charitable cause you care about? A: National Organization for Rare Diseases (NORD) Q: Do you prefer selfies or camera shots and why? A: It truly depends on the day, but I usually like camera shots better because I can usually take twenty selfies and none of them turn out. Q: What do you think is wrong with the world? A: I truly believe a lot of people are soft with their feelings nowadays. I am not saying we all have to be robots with our feelings. Everyone just gets so “hurt” by certain things that back in the day and even when I was growing up we just got back up, wiped it off, and kept on going. Q: What’s right in the world? A: One thing right is the technology that has come along way especially with medical. Which has saved so many lives and has helped in so many ways. Q: Should books be determined to be outdated and no longer functional? A: No. I believe that books can be so magical. There is something about physically having a book in your hands and sitting outside or anywhere really that takes you to a different place rather than just reading it off of your phone. Q: Who is your favorite role model and why? A: My favorite role model would be my grandfather is who was my best friend who just passed away this past Christmas. He was always there for me and still worked when he was over 80 years old. Q: Favorite Teams A: Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Cowboys, Colorado Rockies.

Q: Thoughts on city life versus country life? A: I grew up in both so I don’t really prefer one over the other. I love the aspect the aspect of the city life and the pace of life there in the city. I also love the country life where you can do what you want essentially. The country will always have a place in my heart since I visited by grandparents every weekend. Q: Where will you be exactly a year from now? A: Wherever the path of life takes me. I realized that when you try to plan your life out, it never ends up going that way. Q: Is it ever okay to cheat at anything, why or why not? A: I believe that cheating is not okay, especially in relationships or anything major. Q: What would you wear on your perfect date? A: It depends on what we would be doing but if we went to a fancy dinner, you can’t go wrong with a little black dress. Q: One thing you’d change, if you ruled the world? A: There is so many things that I would change but I just prefer not to say. Q: My story in less than 5 minutes... A: I grew up in indiana where I played soccer all year round. I started modeling when I was a freshman in high school when I lived in Florida for a year then continued to model after I moved back to Indiana. I love to travel and see and experience new places. I am in my last year of bioethics and biomechanics from Harvard/MIT. Q: If your life was made into a movie, who would play your part and which actor would you want to be your leading man? A: If my life was made into a movie I would definitely want Blake Lively to play my role and have Nick Bateman as the leading man.

Q: Do you care at all about Astrology? A: Not not really. I will look it up every now and then but I do not pay that close attention to it. MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN EXTREME SPORTS AS A MAN By Natalie What sport do you participate in, basketball, cricket, swimming? Or do you consider yourself as not having an athletic bone? Generally, men are full of energy and they should find a way to channel it towards the sport of their choice. It could even be working out at the gym. (And boy don’t a majority of women love ripped men). It doesn’t matter if you are athletic or not, there is something you can always do. However, most haven’t found their satisfaction in other sports except extreme sports. Skydiving, rock climbing, bungee jumping, snowboarding excite quite a large number of men and recently women too are trying out some of them. 120 | Jan-February 2019

THE MOTIVATION

For a ‘normal person’ it’s always confusing why one would take on such sports with high risks- after all, doesn’t the name just fill you with horrifying thoughts? Anyway, the motivation comes from the respect they get after completing these sports. Having a portfolio that includes the completion of Ironman, another excruciating sport with a combination of three activities: 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run, will definitely make you a hero among your colleagues and other men. In addition, the adrenaline rush that comes

through diving off a plane thousands of miles from the ground gives these athletes something to look forward to.

THE GAIN

Apart from feeding the danger driven persona in men, what else can one gain from extreme sports? • CONFIDENCE BOOST Lack of confidence in men is a turn off for women and is a trait that shouldn’t be exhibited. In fact, lacking confidence makes your life unbearable in all aspects from the workplace to hanging with the guys. Essen-

tially, you might end up the center of roasts and teases that will do a number on you. To avoid such situations, participating in any extreme sports will be the solution. How do you ask? Once you are able to complete the treacherous sport, there is a sense of accomplishment that comes with it. Given that the experience takes a toll on your body emotionally, mentally and physically, you can’t help but feel proud. The challenge, therefore, boosts your confidence knowing that you were able to conquer the task. • OFFER GREAT CAMARADERIE AND SOCIALIZATION PLATFORM For us men, there aren’t many platforms where we can meet and vent without any judgment from society. If we are not meeting over cold ones, where else do we come together and just talk? Extreme sports gives us an opportunity to meet new people and create a bond over the extremities of the sport. From there, you can arrange for other daring sports together and even get to let out whatever it is, weighing on you on a manly level without criticism. As hard as it is to believe, we need such socialization avenues to drive each other towards personal growth as men. • CALORIE BURN AND INCREASES FITNESS No matter how we try to hide it, we are image conscious especially if we fall short of abs. Truth is, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Different women are attracted to different body types. But if you want to shed some weight, trying rock climbing or paragliding. The former helps burn about 820 calories while the latter burns approximately 230. These are just two examples. Imagine what the others will do to aid your weight loss efforts. Besides burning off calories, some extreme sports will increase your fitness levels as they provide a full body workout and also improves the core strength. Basically, if do not feel motivated to go to the gym, why not try an extreme sport that will work out your muscles at ago while giving you an adrenaline rush as a bonus? • YOU GAIN THE ABILITY TO FACE YOUR FEARS Fear is not part of our male complex, or so we believe. However, there never lacks something to fear. For extreme sports, say bungee jumping, the thought of jumping over a cliff not only makes one anxious but also allows the fear to take hold. That’s why the not-so-

daring people just do away with the idea. So in seeing it through, one is able to conquer the fear and repeating it over and over enables you to master it. From there, fear can never hold you back even when it comes to other things. • IMPROVES BALANCE Men should have balance and great stamina for so many reasons including during sex. Skateboarding, battling the waves during surfing, mountain biking, and so many other extreme sports hence improve your balance. Participating in these activities conditions the body to balance to prevent falling off through facilitating leg strength and joint mobility. Continuous involvement in extreme sports thus reduces injuries due to falls thanks to the boost in stamina.

THE RISKS

Regardless of the benefits of extreme sports, it’s good to face reality. A single mistake might lead to a fatal accident. A few broken bones, deep scars can be a sign of ‘true heroism’ but still not worth ignoring the safety concerns. Death can occur if the right measures are not taken. For that reason, if you want to try extreme sports, don’t let your ego lead you to an early grave. Take it slow and know your limits. There is no rush. First of all, know the environment and the conditions favorable for conducting the sport. Then give yourself time to perfect the skill. For instance, start by skateboarding on a flat land before moving to grinding over rails and such. Also, refrain from attempting something that is beyond your capabilities or fitness. This way the risk is minimized. To cope with extreme sports, be committed. All the hard work that goes into becoming a pro in extreme sports does not happen overnight. So be patient and keep pushing your limits until such a time you conquer your fear and are able to do daredevil tricks. Additionally, be in the right condition. Stretch out your muscles prior to attempting these sports to avoid muscle cramps that could lead to loss of control. In conclusion, extreme sports are just like any other sports but with an amplified taste of danger. If you can handle it, go for it.

Extreme sports gives us an opportunity to meet new people and create a bond over the extremities of the sport. From there, you can arrange for other daring sports together and even get to let out whatever it is, weighing on you on a manly level without criticism. MANCAVE PLAYBABES EDITION

Who inspires you and why? The person that has inspired my life is my mom, because she is the one that keeps me going. She has done a lot of things to help me get to where I am today. She always encourages me to never give up on my dreams and reminds me that in life we will experience failure before we achieve success.

Text messages have become more important than face to face conversations. If you don’t post about our life events on social media “they didn’t happen” and our self-esteem is managed by the amount of “likes” on our posts and statuses. Sadly, we live in a world where nobody holds the door open for you because chivalry is gone.

Do you have a charitable cause you care about? The Joyful Heart foundation is very near and dear to my heart. The Joyful Heart’s mission is to help sexual assault survivors heal and reclaim a sense of joy in their lives. Joyful Heart goal is to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing, and end this type of violence forever.

What’s right in the world? Every day I see things that make me want to celebrate the world we live in. I have discovered that there is far more right with the world than there is wrong with it. I choose to celebrate what’s right with the world. It’s a simple yet powerful idea that encourages me to look at our world through a more positive light. I find that this perspective allows me to see more of the possibilities and the very best the world has to offer.

Do you prefer selfies or camera shots and why? I prefer camera shots because they’re more artistic than a selfie. Self-portraits are thought to be works of art, either by an artist or photographer. Selfies are not considered art. The reason camera shots stand out is because they’re different. They’re creative.

Should books be determined to be outdated and no longer functional? There is just something about reading a printed book that I can’t give up. Holding a book in your hand and the visceral act of physically turning a page that, for me at least, can’t be matched with pixels on a screen.

They were designed to invoke a feeling and make you remember it well after the fact. Camera shots allow people to remember your work and enhance your storytelling.

E-books are slowly subsuming the printed format as the preferred vehicle on which people read books but to me books as physical objects matter, because they evoke the past. When I open a book up and read a message that my grandpa wrote inside, I’m transported back in time and get to relive that enjoyable memory.

What do you think is wrong with the world? We live in a world where turning on the news every day means getting updated on the latest tragedy and not just finding out what the weather will be like tomorrow. People feel more afraid of someone with a gun than protected. We live in a world where you get a participation trophy for merely showing up instead of teaching the value of hard work.

Who is your favorite role model and why? My mom is one of the most inspiring people in my life and what makes her so special is that she seems to have no idea how motivating she is. She has led our family and guided my brother and I simply by being herself. She leads by example, showing us her val-

ues and making sure we live by our own. She carries out this example by pushing us to believe in ourselves. Her goal is to make us independent, successful, and competent in the world and challenges me to push my limits and work through struggles, all without being critical. She is there supporting me whether I win or lose or fail. She is my role model because I want to instill a similar message in others that one must focus on our strengths, not your weaknesses to find success. Favorite teams? I’m a Texas girl from Houston. The Houston, Texas sports teams are the best! The Astros, the Texans, and the Rockets share a camaraderie between teams that isn’t seen in other cities. This has been extremely meaningful in Houston, since Hurricane Harvey. Last year our teams played for the people who could take inspiration at a time when inspiration was badly needed. The best example of how our Houston teams support each other is when the World Series champi-

on Astros wore Houston Rockets attire when they played against the California Angels. All three of the Houston, Texas teams define what it means to be a Houston athlete. Do you have a favorite number? Lucky Number 1! I once read that people with the lucky number 1 are independent, ambitious, and creative. Do you care at all about Astrology? I am a practicing Christian, so I do not believe in astrology. The idea that the significance of my life can be explained by constellations makes me feel irrelevant. I think horoscopes demystify life’s inscrutability and that makes me feel stripped of my unique qualities. When people ask about your astrological sign, they are making snap judgments about your character, whether they realize it or not. I don’t want people to respond differently when I tell them I’m a Libra. I want to be allowed to reveal myself, with all my eccentricities, one step at a time. On a social level astrology can become a game of compatibility but on the surface, it’s just harmless fun.

Thoughts on city life versus country life? There are advantages to both country living and city living. I grew up in the country and at the time I couldn’t wait to get out! Now I’ve come to see the beauty country life has to offer. There’s more privacy and less noise in the country. The fresh air makes being outside enjoyable. It’s amazing to me how much more affordable the land/space costs in country than in the city. Living in the city is the perfect situation for me at this time in my life. It offers the advantage of shorter travel times to auditions and photoshoots. I find that I get out more because I have easier access to more people, friends and colleagues. I love being within range of unique restaurants… especially ones that deliver! Where will you be in exactly one year from this moment? A year from now I will be cast as the female lead in several major motion pictures. I will have earned full-fledged star status for my performances in box office hits with my name near the top on every list of Hollywood’s sexiest actress, and firmly established as one of films hottest properties and most sought-after actresses, appears to possess everything necessary to become one of the super stars of the new century. Is it ever okay to cheat at anything, why or why not? My Cappaw used to say one should never cheat, because you have to be able to get up every day and look at yourself in the mirror. With so many negative influences surround-

ing us today, it’s more important than ever to be strong and stick by your convictions. I believe integrity is our most important quality. Not only does Integrity impact our personal relationships but our professional ones as well. Integrity is the only thing we have that lets people know that we are genuine and can be trusted. It’s not easy to live with integrity. The temptations are great and with integrity come responsibility. People need to trust that you will always do the right thing. If you stand up for doing the right thing, people may not always agree with you, but they will respect that you stand up for what you believe. Lastly, with integrity, you’re perceived as being authentic. I make it my goal to be a person of high integrity so that I can look myself in the mirror each day with no regret. What would you wear on the perfect date? I love dressing up. Especially if it’s a date with that special man. I want my guy panting at first sight, so a leather pencil skirt paired with an airy tank and strappy sandals (the strappier, the better!) is the way to go! One thing you’d change, if you ruled the world? Our dogs would live as long as we do! If your life was made into a movie, who would play your part and which actor would you want to be your leading man? I would to have Sharon Stone or Scarlett Johansson play me and David Spade would be my leading man.
