JO WANTS MORE
As massive Gavin & Stacey fans, we were thrilled to chat to the lovely Joanna Page last week. Quizzing her about a new series following the Christmas episode’s cliffhanger, Jo says she’s as keen as we are for a follow up. Tidy! Turn to page 30 for all her goss.
We were gutted to learn Sandi Toksvig is leaving The Great British Bake Off. The star broke the news to fans in typically witty fashion, tweeting, “When stepping down from a job it is quite common for people to say they are doing so in order to spend more time with their family. Unusually I am departing… so I can spend more time with my other work. As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show.” Pint-sized Sandi joined the show in 2017. Her unlikely partnership with Noel Fielding was an immediate hit with fans and we soon stopped pining for former presenters Mel and Sue. But while viewers might be sad at Sandi’s departure, no one sounds more upset than Noel, who reacted to the development by saying he feels like “Tom without Jerry”. Bless! But who can possibly wear Sandi’s apron when Bake Off returns later this year? We can’t help thinking Love Island twins Jess and Eve Gale

And boy did they fulfil their brief! When we caught up with the lads ahead of their big entrance, Connagh confessed his celeb crush is Nicole Scherzinger (look out Thom Evans!) while Finley revealed his ideal woman is Stormzy’s ex, Maya Jama. Here, the ripped twosome share their types on paper, cheesy chat-up lines and their biggest turn-offs…

Connagh chose to date Shaughna
Hi guys! What makes you the perfect Love Islanders?
What’s been your most disastrous dating experience?
Connagh: I’m a good laugh, fun, honest and laid-back. I try not to get involved in too much drama. Finley: I’m a relationship kinda guy so I’m looking for a partner to leave the villa with. I know I’ll make friends with the blokes in there, too.
Connagh: It was a first date and I tipped my drink over this girl and she was wearing white – not smooth at all. Luckily she saw the funny side. Finley: I shaved off my eyebrow an hour before a date once – that wasn’t great. It was an accident. I was trying to shape it.
Describe yourself in three words… Connagh: Goofy, laid-back and compassionate. Finley: I’m loud, outgoing and good looking!
How would you rate your looks on a scale of one to 10? Finley: I’m a 9 out of 10! My eyes are my best feature. Connagh: I’d say 8 to 8½. Best feature? My jawline.
not going to be a homewrecker. Finley: It’ll be great if I come out of the villa with mates, but if I need to step on toes to get the girl I like, I’ll do it.
Will you be loyal?
Finley: I’ve always been loyal. Whenever I start getting the wandering eye, it’s time to break up. Who knows what could happen in the villa? Can you describe your ideal woman…
What’s your best chat-up line then, Connagh?
Connagh: I like brunettes, a girl with nice eyes who takes care of herself. Finley: I want a girl who is fun and outgoing and who can make me laugh. I don’t have a type looks wise, but obviously you want that initial attraction.
Connagh: “Do you feel that? That’s boyfriend material.” It’s a bit of a laugh, an ice-breaker. Chat-up lines never work!

How far are you prepared to go in the villa to get the girl you want?
Connagh: I was in an advert with Anthony Joshua. I’m a big boxing fan, so I was really excited to meet him. It was pretty nervewracking – he’s a big boy! Finley: I’m a semi-pro footballer for Oxford City. GEMMA MCCARTNEY

Former Love Island star Amy Hart on the highs and lows of dating
A
my Hart was one of our favourites from last year’s Love Island so we couldn’t wait to find out the former air hostess’s take on this year’s crop of singletons. When we catch up with her at the European premiere of Cirque Du Soleil’s Luzia, the 26-year-old tells us she knows coffee bean salesman Connor Durman and reveals the pair have “mutual friends”. Despite leaving the villa without a match, Amy hasn’t given up on dating – in fact, she’s been busy filming her latest reality TV project, the upcoming series of Celebs Go Dating. Here, Amy opens up about battling her insecurities, how her life has changed since finding fame last year and meeting dating coach Anna Williamson’s newborn daughter, Eleanora…
Hi Amy. Have you met the man of your dreams yet on Celebs Go Dating? I couldn’t possibly say, but it’s going very well and I’ve really enjoyed it.
How have you found dating on TV again?
PHOTOS: Getty, Wenn
It’s very different to Love Island, but it’s really fun.
You had a tough time with Curtis Pritchard in the villa. Are you going into this with a bit more confidence? Well, I thought I was, but every piece of feedback I’ve had from dates is like, “She needs to have more confidence.” But I’m getting better.
Where does that lack of confidence come from?
Amy is Team Laura
Boys I’ve dated in the past have always chosen someone else. I’ve never been enough for anyone. Hopefully Celebs Go Dating will make me more confident.
Curtis broke Amy’s heart last summer
It’s been educational for you, then… Yeah, and Paul [Carrick Brunson] and Anna are absolutely amazing. I met the baby the other day – she’s so cute.
Do you ever speak to Curtis? I last saw him at the ITV Palooza last year. We’re civil if we see each other.
Is it strange seeing Laura Whitmore hosting the new series instead of Caroline Flack? Not really, because it’s a new villa and a new location. She was the first celebrity I met when I came out of the villa. I met her in the lounge at Palma airport. She’s lovely.
Some fans feel they’re overdoing it with two series a year… The thing is we all love it. Iain Stirling did an interview and said, “Nobody goes up to Dermot O’Leary and says, ‘I hate The X Factor.’” But everyone goes up to Iain and says, “I hate Love Island.” Yet people get drawn in and there are always new viewers.
Do you have a favourite Islander? Connor Durman is from Worthing. My brother knows him and we’ve got lots of mutual friends. The twins are getting a really bad rap, but it’s not their fault because they had to go in there and pick someone.
How has your life changed since leaving the villa last summer? You’re never on your own. Someone always comes and sits next to you on the train. I went to the Toby Carvery last night and the manager started hugging me. People cry when they’re talking to me and I’m like, “Don’t cry, I was an air hostess six months ago!” GEMMA MCCARTNEY

’ s n o m e d y m e v a h l l i ‘I st He may be in a good place now, but Calum Best is still paying the price for his ‘playboy’ past
H
aving trained like a beast in the days leading up to our exclusive boxingthemed shoot, Calum Best is taking no prisoners. As the photographer snaps away, he jabs and ducks his way around the ring like a man possessed, giving his all and looking extremely ripped while doing so. That’s because Calum, 38, is a reformed man. These days the former party boy-turned-reality star is all about working out, both mentally and physically, meaning when we meet he’s level headed, focused and – as he proves when he strips off in the shower – in fantastic shape.
But there’s no question beneath that chiselled, tattooed torso is a serious, somewhat tortured soul, who’s still paying the price for the reputation he gained in the early 2000s, when he practically lived in nightclubs, slept with scores of famous women, drank like a fish and found himself plastered across the tabloids as a result. When we sit down with Calum he’s clearly so over that life – but issues remain. Despite wanting to keep the chat – which we conduct over a cuppa in the caff next to the gym – “light and funny”, Calum can’t help but talk about his dark days and often turns to the subject of his late father, legendary footballer George Best.
If you don’t know who he is or the impact he had on the British game, your parents will tell you George was one of the greatest players of all time. He was also an alcoholic who died of organ failure at the age of just 59, when Calum was 24. It’s clear Calum still struggles with living in his dad’s shadow, and says he turned to partying as a way of masking the pain of both that and George’s untimely death. But with his beloved mum Angie’s help, as well as a few famous women along the way, he’s managed to break away from the party circuit to become a successful businessman and reality star in his own right. Now, his next stop is the beach. This week Calum, who’s been single for four years, joins the likes of Joey Essex in Ex On The Beach, an opportunity he saw as a means of finding love and getting some sweet exposure. Here, we chat to him about famous lovers, his tragic past and why he’d happily raise a child on his own… Calum, you smashed this shoot! Thank you! I train my f**king ass off. Knowing this was coming up, I trained twice a day for 10 days. I did cardio in the morning, weights in the afternoon and six classes in that time. Well, we certainly appreciate it… No worries! Look, I’m nearly 39, I wanna look and feel my best. And I do. I’ve trained my brain to be positive, and I think confidence comes from within. Even if people think it’s cheesy, it’s a f**king game changer. I still have my down days, I still struggle with anxiety and my past still catches up with me. But if you’re healthy in your mind, you’re healthy in your body. Would you say you’re vain? You’d think so if you looked on my Instagram! I don’t like the word vain, but I take care of myself. I moisturise every day, I use an
18
eye cream, I do it all and I have no problem with it. I’m not getting any injections or work done, but I want to grow old gracefully. So I take good care of myself. I’m not silly, I know sex sells. And we’re buying what you’re selling! Seeing as you’re half naked, let’s talk about love. When was your last relationship? I met someone not too long ago and I really thought she was the one for me, but she didn’t want it. That was a kick in the balls. I met her on a dating app, we got on well, I took her to Bali on our third date and we spent two weeks there. I think I went overboard and scared her off. But it wasn’t meant to be. That’s why a show like Ex On The Beach is good for me. MTV has resources all over the world, who knows what they could bring to the table! I’ve been properly single for three or four years. I have faith it’ll happen. I have this reputation for being a playboy but that’s not gonna pressure me into settling down. What about sex? How do you, er, satisfy your needs? I’m a people person and I’m quite confident and comfortable, so I don’t have any problems meeting a girl. It’s not difficult if you want something casual. And that’s how I’m dealing with things at the moment. If I meet someone and there’s chemistry, we can see what develops naturally. And so far nothing has developed further than that initial hook-up. You’re a renowned ladies’ man. Apparently you’ve slept with both Rod Stewart’s daughter and his ex-wife… That’s f**ked up. Is it true? Oh my God, no! I’ve never been with his ex Rachel Hunter and Kimberly Stewart is a good friend of mine. She welcomed me into her home when I was in Los Angeles. Our hanging out consisted of doing tequila shots. But I’m still friends with the majority of my exes.

Even Lindsay Lohan? Look, I don’t actually wanna call anyone out for anything. Most of these people I supposedly dated, I think highly of them now and I hope they feel that way about me. Just to back myself up a bit, I’ve been in the British press since I was 20 years old… so yes, there have been women! Did they throw themselves at you back in the day? I don’t wanna say that, but back then we were in surroundings that were more carefree. Everyone was drinking, whereas now, in order for me to have any potential relationship, we’ve gotta hang out in the daytime, she’s gotta be driven and motivated and have goals. I don’t want someone who wants to go clubbing all the time. You must be all partied out. What was the wildest thing you did? Oh man, I couldn’t even tell you! There’s no way you could print that shit. There was some madness, though. Caprice told us she drank a bottle of vodka a night in her heyday… Funnily enough, Caprice introduced me to the playboy lifestyle. When I first got here I went to the GQ Awards and someone introduced me to her. She was the most well-known
model in the country at the time and we took a photo together and ended up having a night out – and I made the cover of the papers the next day, pictured next to her. The headline was Bestie’s Boy Hits The Town. I absolutely loved it. I was on the arm of the hottest model around, 19 years old and I was buzzing off it. Impressive! Oh, and one night me and my mate managed to blag our way into the Playboy Mansion with fake IDs and a $100 tip to the security guard. I got naked in the Jacuzzi… I was on the tennis court with Miss March 1997 – it was mind-blowing shit. Insane. You’re the original celebrity offspring. What advice would you give to the likes of the Beckham boys? I once saw an article that said Victoria and David were upset that their son was going to be “The next Calum Best”. That was harsh. When you’re young and doors are being opened for you, it’s hard to say no. And everywhere would welcome Brooklyn Beckham in, no doubt. My mistake was I’d be going to these places every single night. It can start to affect your reputation and your health. So I’d always say, just be conscious of the
long-term effects of what the short term can do. But I’m a huge fan of that family and I get it. What do you like about them? I just think they’re incredibly inspirational. They’ve grown and stuck together as a family and that will stand their kids in good stead. With me, it was a different story. My dad was an alcoholic and he passed away while my mum was in the States. When you come from a damaged family, there’s so much trauma that comes with that. When my old man died it was such a big deal that no one thought about the fact that there was a 24-year-old son left behind. Believe me, it’s hard to deal with a family member who’s an alcoholic. In that respect, do you harbour any resentment? As blessed as it is to be George Best’s son – and doors do open for me – you have to work extra hard to keep those doors open and prove yourself. I did hold a lot of resentment, confusion and anger, and it’s only over the past decade that I started to get woke to the universe and spirituality. I stopped being the victim. My mindset used to be, “I’m the son of a legend but I’m not a legend, so what do I do? Well I know how to party really well!” I still drink
and I still enjoy myself, but if I compare it to what my reputation was 15 years ago, it’s completely different. I’m in a great place right now but I still have demons. Everyone does. There are still things I need to work on. But I did turn my life around. What was the turning point? I just hit a real low point in my life. I wasn’t working, my health was bad, I was out every night and my mum came back to the UK from America and suddenly I had a family set-up I hadn’t had in years. It was nice and I realised I deserved to be better for myself. Another big turning point was a documentary I did for BBC3. It was called Brought Up By Booze and it was soon after my old man died. I was quite f**ked up at the time, but I went around the UK and met people affected by alcohol. It was a turning point for me for growth and finding closure and answers. Why did you go out and drink so much, knowing how your father died? It didn’t even cross my mind that I was doing what my dad had done. People put it to me all the time, telling me that seeing my dad die like that must have made me not want to drink. But I was so messed up. When

he died I was on such a downer that I went out every night to mask my pain. People had no idea but I had no family here at that time. I was living in an empty flat with no furniture, but I didn’t choose to live that way. Partying was my coping mechanism. Would you say your life fell apart after your dad died? For a time. When I first came to the UK, my agent at the time took me to the Wellington Club, where the likes of Kate Moss hung out, and I was welcomed in with open arms. Fast forward years later I was in the exact same club – only my agent had dropped me, I was overweight, I was unhealthy and the place had sucked me in. But everyone has to go through these learning processes – mine were just documented for the public. Were you ever an alcoholic? No. I never woke up needing a drink and I swore that if I ever felt like I was developing a problem, I’d stop. When my dad died it did get bad, but I’m lucky that something switched in my mind and I knew it wasn’t the right
path. I’ve been called a sex addict, a drug addict and an alcoholic – but I was none of those things. Do you have any regrets about the way you lived your life? No way, I had a great time – some of the best times of my life! What I do regret is that for a long time I had a victim mentality. I wish I’d learnt quicker that that’s not the mindset to have. But there were some dark days. Your mum Angie must have been so worried about you… She was. She came back from the US to the UK for good because she knew how damaged I was. And that was a huge changing point. I liked her being there and looking after me again after six years of clubbing and living in a flat with no furniture. You’re so close to her – do you ever fight? Oh my God, yeah! I was stuck with her all day, every day on our recent holiday. I wanted to shoot myself by the end of it! We were in the Celebrity Big Brother house together [in 2017], but not by
choice. No one cheered harder than me when she was voted off! But no, I love her to bits. She’s so knowledgeable, so kind, she’s a good woman. I’m fully a momma’s boy. I take good care of her. What about kids of your own? Is it true you have a love child? No, I do not have a daughter. I’m not saying too much, but it’s been proven she’s not mine. To be honest the whole thing got me down. It was f**king horrible and something I don’t want to talk about, but no I don’t have any kids. But you’d like some? Hell yeah, I’d be an incredible dad. I have so much love to give. But I’ll do it when the time’s right. That said, I don’t wanna wait too long – I want them soon. I want to be an active, cool dad. I’ve been thinking about it a lot and if I don’t find someone I love and want to have babies with in the next two years, then there are alternatives. As in… you’d do it alone? Yeah. Or I’d do it with someone I wasn’t in love with, for sure. I’ve discussed it with a couple of close female friends. I believe you can bring up a baby even if you’re not in a traditional happy family. My main goal would be to fall in love, but if it came to it I’d co-parent with a friend to have a child. I mean, what marriage lasts in this day and age? Close to none. But co-parenting a child isn’t necessarily plain sailing… I’ve talked to women about this and they’re the ones who make you think about the different circumstances. But in my head, if the mother is a good person, it can be done.
But what happens if one of you meets someone else? And my kid is around another man? Yeah, that would be tough, but the point there is, in our day and age, marriages aren’t lasting long, people don’t stay together long and it’s becoming the norm to have blended families. I have a very strong paternal instinct, but you know, not yet – I’ve just done Ex On The Beach for God’s sake! Speaking of which, why did you decide to do that show? I’ve done three different types of dating show now and I go in there genuinely with the best intentions. I say no to stuff that doesn’t suit me. But I’m single, MTV’s an awesome brand, so I gave it a go. Did you enjoy the experience? There were points when I was thinking to myself, “Is this right for me?” And MTV definitely came for me. They came for me hard! I’m not silly, with my past and my exes, they asked me for a reason. But it’s a great opportunity for me. Was it weird to be surrounded by youngsters? Of course. I’m 39 next month and it was hard. All of a sudden you wake up and it’s like, “Holy shit! We’ve been drinking for 27 days straight.” I haven’t done that since I was 26. But there’s a pressure to perform and keep up with the younger cast. There were a couple of moments when I knew I shouldn’t have drunk as it doesn’t bring out the best in me – but at the same time the majority of the experience was fantastic. SARAH MORTON
‘I GOT SO MUCH GRIEF’ I’ve had my fair share of trolling, which is why I fully support new’s Turn Off Trolls campaign. People can be f**king horrible. When social media first came out I got so much grief. When my old man died, people wrote things like, “Liver yella, drink some Stella.” Or they’d call me worthless and accuse me of spending his money. Luckily it doesn’t happen so much any more, but there are still people who criticise. If they’ve got the time to sit at home and write horrible shit, I feel for them. I mean, I hate them at the same time, but they obviously have to work on their own lives.

GIVE HER MAJ A BREAK! It’s all getting a bit messy at Buckingham Palace, isn’t it? My heart is breaking for our lovely Queen. Talk about a shitty start to 2020. It was bad enough with the Prince Andrew allegations, without Meghan and Harry opting out! In many respects I feel for Meghan – she’s always been independent, then suddenly she’s in the royal family with no control over her own life. Who knows how damaging that could be to her mental health? But while I wish her and Harry well, I won’t accept them being part-time royals with all the privileges and none of the work. Either you’re fully in or you’re out – you can’t have the best of both worlds.
GWYNETH PERV-TROW
I’m sorry, but the more I read about Gywneth Paltrow, the more I think she’s a bit of a pervert! Apparently she’s selling a candle that smells like her vagina. Sorry, love, but what sort of research do you have to do to come up with that? Swab yourself?! One thing’s for sure, I won’t be burning that in my living room any time soon. I’ve never had a candle out, but I did have a perfume once. It was called Outrageous by Kerry Katona and it smelt absolutely delicious. The bottle did look a bit like an S&M sex toy, mind, so maybe I’m just as bad as Gwynnie!

I DON’T GET BILLIE’S BOND

S Billie Eilish is singing the new James Bond So theme, eh? Good luck to her, but I just don’t get it. Molly, Lilly and Heidi love her, so I’m thinking it’s a generational thing, but her music’s not for me. I’m surprised they haven’t gone for a big diva again – like Shirley Bassey, who sang Goldfinger, or my favourite, Adele. Nothing can beat her Bond theme, Skyfall. And before anyone asks, no I won’t be putting myself forward for the next one. Can you imagine?!
CLAWS OUT You probably saw me have a giggle at the fact that Atomic Kitten teamed up with Kim Woodburn for a recent photo opp. I couldn’t resist poking fun at the picture, writing, “Here’s what I would have looked like if I was still in the band!!!” Well, what do you know, I post that and suddenly everyone’s talking about the Kittens again. That said, I love Tash and Liz. I have no hard feelings about the fact I’m not in the band any more – even though I’m still confused as to why I’m not!
A MESSAGE TO CHARLOTTE I feel I need to apologise to Charlotte Crosby after my comments in this column last week. I said she looked like a cross-eyed fish, but it was all meant to be very tongue-in-cheek. My intention was never to be malicious or cruel – I was simply trying to point out that she should stop messing with her face. She’s said herself that she’s gone too far. I still stand by what I said in that I really do think she was much more beautiful before all the procedures, but the main thing is that she’s happy with herself now. As someone who speaks openly and honestly about mental health, I would never, ever want to make anyone feel bad about themselves. Sorry, Char!

I had the pleasure of standing in for the wonderful Richard Arnold on Good Morning Britain again and then the lovely Andi Peters for the live competition segments. Admittedly, there were a few technical issues during the morning, which saw me being cut off twice while on air. Apparently, there was a problem with
one of the cables, but that’s live TV for you. Speaking of TV, I’m not too keen on the winter Love Island. I had to watch one episode for my entertainment section on GMB. It’s a great show, but it’s back too soon. There are certain programmes that work being once-yearly, such as Strictly, and I feel Love Island is one of them.

BISTA’S IDOL
I had an interesting conversation with Bista last week. I asked her which three people, dead or alive, she’d have over for dinner and she chose Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and – get this – the Queen. But what got me was the fact she said she liked Kylie because she’s pretty and she likes her big lips. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes, but to be fair to the Kardashian/Jenners, they’ve all done very well for themselves. And Kylie’s a billionaire at 22, so she must be doing something right! Good on them I say. I’m confused, though… Why was our poor Queen thrown into the mix? What would they talk about? It would be interesting, I guess!
MY MARY BERRY I think Emily should do Bake Off. She’s great at baking cakes and being creative. What do you guys reckon to her cake above? She said she wouldn’t thinkof doing the celebrity version because she says she’s not a celebrity, but she did seem keen on doing the normal version when I questioned her, so watch this space. I think she’d be amazing! Let’s get a campaign going.
TOO OO MUCH PRESSURE? There have been various debates about whether Meghan and Harry bullied the Queen into allowing them to step down from their duties as senior royals, but I can’t help but feel it’s Harry and Meghan who are being subjected to bullying. Not just by some of the media, but also by some of the general public. I understand the argument that British taxpayers shouldn’t still fund them as it’s their decision to walk away, but the level of hate they’ve been receiving is awful. If I’m honest, I don’t think a lot of people were very nice to Meghan from the start. Even if some points being raised are valid, this is about the pressure that’s being put on them. And I feel like Harry’s being vilified for wanting to step away from the life he was born into. We don’t know the devastating effect losing his mother MY VIE has had on him. It’s common for people who have W ON THE lost someone in the way he did to hold tightly on to NEW S someone they love through fear of losing them, too.

Vegans get my vote Emily and I decided to go vegan for a week and you know what? I actually enjoyed it. I tried a vegan pad Thai when we went to Wagamama and we were blown away by it! Now, this doesn’t mean I’ve converted – I love my Maccies and Aussie barbecues too much – but I’ll probably go meat-free for most of the week. I’m all about eating everything. I’ll become an “Everythingarian” or a “Megan” – (meat and vegan haha!)

Saira Khan on her marriage and changing the world
G
etting a word in edgeways is tricky when we chat to Loose Women panellist Saira Khan on the red carpet at the Cirque du Soleil Luzia European premiere. The 49-year-old talks as passionately about LW as she does about her role as a campaign advocate for the United Nations and the organisation’s plans to abolish female genital mutilation. “Every 10 seconds one girl around the world is genitally mutilated,” she tells new. “I’m so honoured to be asked by the UN to work with them.” Here, Saira, who is mum to Zac, 11, and eight-year-old Amara, opens up about how her hubby, Steve Hyde, is the yin to her yang and the unique friendships she’s made on the ITV lunchtime show…
PHOTOS: Eroteme, Shutterstock
Hi Saira! How will you celebrate turning 50 this year?
on Loose Women. Every day, people say, “Thanks so much for talking about endometriosis” or, “Thank you, Linda, for talking about mental health.” I think the fact she did it on the show hopefully shows everyone what a supportive environment it is.
Are the Loose Women all there for each other? Yes. We have a WhatsApp group and we have a laugh on there, but we also ask each other for advice. It’s not the kind of friendship I’ve ever experienced before. It’s so open. You might go, “Nads, I sneezed the other day and I weed my pants.” And she’s like, “Yeah, that’s happened to me. I’ve got a cure for that.” You don’t feel embarrassed because you’ve known each other for so long.
How does your hubby feel when you discuss your private life?
He married me because I’m his total opposite. If you met I can’t reveal al too much, but Steve, you’d be like, “Why there is a big g get-together with are these tw two together?” the girls coming ming up. because he he’s so calm Are you excited cited and measure measured – I need ur to be in your someone like him. fifties? I once o came I am! I’m glad ad home and ho I’ve got to it ssaid, “I’ve [laughs]. jjust told the You must have ave whole world been proudd about our of Linda sex life.” Robson for And he opening upp didn’t go about her mental, he alth mental health said, “Why oosee battle on Loose did you Saira and Women… have to do husband It’s amazing,, tthat?” We Steve and that’s bbalance each what we do ot other out.
You’re working with the UN on their Draw A Line campaign to end violence against women. Have you met anyone who has been affected by female genital mutilation?
Linda broke down on Loose Women
I have, and when you hear it’s happening from the age of five, it’s horrendous. They use razor blades and there’s no anaesthetic. Because the mothers went through it, they believe their daughters have to go through it, too. It’s misogyny. The reason men don’t want women to have their sexual organs in place is because if you can’t enjoy sex why would you run away? It’s so important to talk about it.
Will you discuss it on Loose Women?
We’re going to bring on a survivor of FGM to tell people what happens to you as a woman. For example, going to the loo and childbirth. As a mother with a daughter, I can’t imagine putting my own child through that. The UN’s objective is that by 2030 we can abolish this worldwide. GEMMA MCCARTNEY

‘There has to be more Gavin & Stacey before we get too old’ Joanna Page on returning to the hit sitcom and how Hollywood stardom hasn’t changed James Corden
A
whopping 17 million people tuned in to the BBC’s Gavin & Stacey Christmas special and the episode left fans begging for more after the cliffhanger ending when Ruth Jones’ character Nessa proposed to Smithy, played by James Corden. Joanna Page, 42, aka Stacey, admits she’s as keen as the rest of us for the show to go on. “You can’t leave it on that cliffhanger,” she tells us when we chat at the London premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s Luzia. Here, Jo, who has had three kids – Eva, six, Kit, four, and Noah, three – with her actor hubby James Thornton since filming the last series, talks about feeling broody and how she stays looking so young…
Hi Jo! So will there be more Gavin & Stacey?
PHOTOS: Getty
I have no idea, but I’m just the same as everybody else. When I first read it I was like, “Oh my goodness – does he say yes?” We were all saying, “Is there going to be more? What are you going to do?” We have no idea.

How often do you get asked about it? Constantly. The last 10 years there was always, “Is there
The Christmas special was a hit
going to be more?” And until there is more I think people will keep asking. They’ve got to do it soon, otherwise we’ll be so old.
You look like you haven’t aged. How have you done it? I don’t know. There was a story about how I’ve aged so well and they said I’d had Botox and fillers. But I haven’t had anything done. It’s good genes because my dad looks young. And it’s having three children in the space of four years, putting on about 2st and losing it, which gives you naturally plump cheeks. And then taking six years off to look after three children, then being in Cardiff for three weeks drinking gin constantly and just having a laugh. I think that’s why I look young and happy!
Would you like more children? Oh, I don’t think so. I don’t think we could cope with another one! With three, my goodness, it’s exhausting. But as soon as I’m in a room with a baby I get so broody and go, “I’d love another one!” At the moment my husband said I can have a Labrador – the next best thing!
How did it feel getting back together with the cast? It was exactly the same! We were all quite nervous, thinking, “Can we still play these characters and is it still going to be the same?”
We walked into rehearsals and within 10 minutes it was like we’d been filming the day before. We all slotted straight back into it. Everyone’s like family. With hubby James
James Corden’s success has been phenomenal…
It’s absolutely fantastic. What was amazing was when we were all working together again, he’s exactly the same. He’s matured because he’s a father and a husband and he’s just a right laugh. When I walked in for the read-through I saw his face and I’ve not seen him for so long I just put his face in my hands! GEMMA McCARTNEY

KEEPING UP WITH THE FERDINANDS Newlyweds Kate and Rio Ferdinand have landed their own TV show, which sees them settling into life as a family-of-five. The BBC documentary, called Rio And Kate: Becoming A Step Family, follows the Ferdinands as Kate becomes step-mum to Rio’s children Lorenz, 13, Tate, 11, and Tia, eight, who tragically lost their mum Rebecca Ellison to breast cancer in 2015. Taking to Instagram, the former TOWIE star, 28, who tied the knot with Rio, 41, in September, wrote, ”We have been on such a journey and we really hope the film will help other step families and those experiencing the journey of grief.”
The singer is gearing up to release her big comeback track, React, with the Pussycat Dolls. But the song, which got leaked online last week, appears to only feature Nicole’s vocals – which is what triggered the group’s split in 2010. Bandmates Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta and Kimberly Wyatt have reportedly since sung on a new version. Awkward…
CYNTHIA ERIVO The British actress, 33, could make showbiz history after being nominated for Best Actress at this year’s Oscars for her turn in biopic Harriet. ‘I FELL IN LOVE IN THREE HOURS’ Ellie Brown, 21, Joey Essex, 29, and Sophie Kasaei, 30, chat to us about bonding in the villa and why this is the best Ex On The Beach series yet…
Sophie: It’s nice. I can finally be like, “Woooo, we’re on Ex On The Beach!” Did many of you knew each other before the show? Joey: I didn’t know Hi guys! Are you Michael, but I knew excited about Ellie and Sophie. taking part in Ellie: I worked for Celebrity Ex On Sophie in her The Beach? boutique when Sophie: I’m just I was 16. sister to us. I’ve seen her grow up. When I heard she was doing this, I was like, “Oh my God, little Ell!” Was it comforting going into a situation where you already knew people? Sophie: One hundred per cent – cos I went in a bit later, so I’d seen in the press who was going in and I was like, “Right, I know I’m gonna have girls there.” I don’t think I could have done the normal Ex On The Beach. To have been with people I don’t know would’ve been too scary. Because it was celebs and we’re all in the same world, it made me feel more safe. A lot of your friends have been on the show before, Sophie. What did they tell you about it? Sophie: Every single one of my

friends has been on Ex On The Beach – Charlotte, Scott, Gaz, Marnie, Chloe, Aaron… When I got the offer, I messaged everyone straight away and they said, “Do it.” They said it’s the easiest reality show you’ll ever film. You literally just sit around all day, so I was like, “You know what, f**k it – I’ll do it!” And I did. I loved it. Ellie: You can’t compare it, though. It’s not the same as the normal one – it’s not about being angry and kicking off. It’s a totally different show, so I think no matter what anyone said, the experience would’ve been different. What was the villa like? Joey: The villa was sick! It sounds crazy, but I would probably do it again. It was actually fun. There were times when we got cabin fever – screaming and running around like lunatics – and wanted to go home. But at the same time, I’d do it again. Ellie and Sophie, was it hard for you coming into the show late as exes? Sophie: I did worry everyone had already had the first pick of the litter, so there weren’t gonna be any lads for me, because I genuinely wanted to find one. I was thinking they’ve probably all bonded. You don’t wanna be the late person, do you? Ellie: I was the opposite, I wasn’t nervous before because Joey and I were never on bad terms. I was
more nervous when I got in there, which you’ll see. Did you stay on good terms? Ellie: At the start of the show it’s a bit rocky. Joey: It’s a bit rocky throughout the whole thing, but on the outside we’re actually cool. Do you think that’s the difference between the celeb version and the normal one? Sophie: They’re brutal on the normal one. We cared about each other. Joey: It’s so real. What you see is what you get – there’s no bullshit. There have been reports about the three of you getting with people on the show. What can you tell us about that? Sophie: I was petrified about
going in there. I genuinely thought I wasn’t going to find anyone and then obviously there was someone in there who I had a thing with. It was really fun. I can’t wait to watch it. What about you, Joey? There have been reports about you and model Lorena Medina who you met on the show… Joey: Well, I learnt something new – that I can fall in love in three hours. I said 24 hours earlier, but that was a lie. I reckon it was about five hours. I would say fully in love in 24 hours, knowing I was gonna fall in love was about four or five hours. How is the long-distance relationship going? Joey: It is what it is. I don’t really
mind, I’m always busy. Lorena What can viewers expect was with me for three weeks, from this series? but being far away doesn’t really Sophie: I just think it’s different make a difference to be honest. to anything you’ve seen on Ex On Sometimes it’s nice to have The Beach before. ‘THE VILLA REMINDED ME OF A PLAYBOY MANSION’ Lateysha Grace, 27, and Michael Griffiths, 28, tell us why their Celebrity Ex On The Beach experience had them in stitches…
How excited are you to be part of CEOTB? Lateysha: So excited! Michael: I’ve been wanting to talk about it for ages. Has it been quite difficult keeping it a secret from everyone? Lateysha: God yeah, especially as I’ve got a big mouth and so have all my friends. It’s so cool to finally be able to speak about it. How was the experience for you? Lateysha: Incredible. Michael: It was a lot of fun. There were so many funny moments on the show that you wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else. Lateysha: It’s comedy value. You’re watching it and you’re constantly laughing. Or crying. How did it compare to other shows you’ve done before? Michael: This one was just relaxed and a lot more fun. I could be myself. I went in feeling quite apprehensive, but I relaxed as time went on. Lateysha: I found this better than anything I’ve done before because you’re in Marbella, you’re in the sun, you’re in this gorgeous villa with amazing people. It just seemed relaxed and nothing felt forced. I loved it – I’ve never really done a dating show before. Michael, you only came into the spotlight last summer on Love Island – was it a bit surreal for you to be in the villa with people who have been on TV for years? Michael: It was. Lateysha: You introduced yourself as a firefighter. Michael: Yeah, I did! I was thinking, “I’ve seen all these people on TV.” I was like, “Oh, you’re Lateysha. Oh, you’re Joey.” I said, “I’m Michael,” and they were like, “I know who you are.” Michael, what can you tell us about the reports that you got close to Ellie? We built quite a good relationship, quite a good bond – and you’ll see what happens on the show! Did you meet anyone you liked, Lateysha? Lateysha: You’ll see! I can tell you I have fun.

What goes through your mind when the tablet of terror goes off and you’re summoned to the beach? Michael: You start to sweat. You’re like, “Is it really that hot out here?” You just wanna get in the pool, but you’ve gotta go to the beach. Lateysha: Sometimes I got excited, though. I loved other people’s exes coming in cos I love the drama.
But when I thought it was mine, I was pooing myself! What was it like living in the villa? Lateysha: It reminded me of the Playboy mansion. It was in the hills, similar to Beverly Hills. Michael: It was unbelievable – such great views. How was it being away from your daughter Wynter, Lateysha? Lateysha: It was really hard, but
I spoke to her whenever I wanted and we FaceTimed. This is my job and I’ve got to remember who I’m doing it for. I’ve done it since she was born, so she gets it. Which three words would you use to describe this series? Lateysha: Hilarious, entertaining and edge of your seat. It’s full of drama. Honest to God, it was so funny.

‘THERE WAS SO MUCH LOVE IN THE AIR’ Georgia Harrison, 25, talks about coming face to face with long-lost exes and her alarming reaction to the tablet of terror… What made you say yes to going on the show? One, I knew it’d be really fun, two, I love a holiday and three, I was hoping to find a boyfriend. So you really went in there to find love? Always! When you go on a dating show, you obviously do go in there with the hope of meeting someone. And it’s easier to meet someone on a celebrity version of a show as you can relate to them more. Were you nervous about which exes would be coming in? Basically, you have a suspicion that your ex could be coming, but no one knew how good the researchers were. I don’t know where they’re finding these people. They’re like Inspector Gadgets because they were popping out people that none of us imagined they even knew we hooked up with. We thought we could go in there, have an easy ride, have a few obvious exes, but they were digging them out of the woodwork. What’s going through your mind when the tablet of terror goes off? Your heart just falls out of your arsehole. Nothing goes through your mind. You just shiver and you have flashbacks of all the terrible relationship mistakes you’ve made and which one could potentially wash up on shore. What was the villa like? It was very Love Island-style. There were a lot of people living in one room and sharing one bathroom. We were really on top of each other – we weren’t living in luxury. Some of the rooms had double beds in them and sometimes it would get to the point where the villa was completely full to capacity and we had to share a bed, so you would end up in bed with a boy or a girl.
Did it get dirty in the villa? Disgusting! By the end of it, it was just eww! Our room looked like devastation – it was like the end of World War II. Was there a lot of romance nce in this series? There was loads of romance, ance, I’m not gonna lie! There was a point in the villa when almost everybody was paired up. p. There was the odd tear-up, butt for once it was completely different. There was so much love in the air. Why do you think there was more love than tear-ups? I think we were specifically chosen because we are all positive, fun and humorous. ous. Was it awkward living with any of your exes? It was bearable. Was that a Stephen Bear pun, Georgia? [Laughs] Nooo! It was bearable. What do you do if one of your friend’s exes comes into the villa and you fancy them? Between the girls, we all had a chat about our main exes before any of them came in and I’m not gonna lie, we said which ones we wouldn’t care if someone hooked up with and which ones we would. There were some that I was like, “If he comes in, I’ll be honest, I do care about him” and there were some where I was like, “He does my nut in, take him off my hands.” So we all knew where we stood with exes and we were as respectful as we could be. Why should people tune in to the show? Because if they want to have a laugh, they’re gonna watch it! They’re gonna see celebrities they’ve probably followed for years in a whole different light and it’s something they don’t want to miss. I‘ don’t have time to date’
Ex-Corrie star Katie McGlynn talks to new about her lack of a love life and following in Michelle Keegan’s footsteps
A
ctress Katie McGlynn has jetted off to warmer climes for a much needed break and is enjoying some sun, sea and… champagne. “I’ve been non-stop for a year and a half without a rest. I haven’t been on holiday for, like, two years,” the former Coronation Street star tells us from her beachfront hotel room. After saying an emotional goodbye to her on-screen character Sinead Tinker last October, the 26-year-old reveals she’s been busier than ever, auditioning for new roles, embarking on a body transformation – which saw her shed over a stone and drop from a size 12 to an 8-10 – and enjoying a brief panto stint playing Tinker Bell in Peter Pan, before she was forced to pull out due to a virus. Although she’s still not fully recovered, Katie tells us she’s feeling much better and has her sights set on Hollywood. “My aim is to get over there as soon as I can,” she says. And with Tinseltown beckoning, it seems romance is low on the actress’s list of priorities. Katie had to pull out of her role as Tinker Bell
Katie’s been single since splitting from long-term boyfriend Benji Roberts in 2018. But apart from her busy schedule, she says there’s something else preventing her from finding a new partner. “I don’t know how people meet people,” the actress giggles, adding that she “doesn’t understand” the world of online dating and would much prefer to meet guys the old-fashioned way. Here, Katie discusses her fears at having to audition for jobs again and why she prioritises being healthy over being skinny… Hi Katie! What’s life been like post Corrie? It’s been non-stop, to be honest. Are you heading to Hollywood? I’m planning to go, but there’s nothing set in stone yet. Is it an ambition of yours to work in LA? Definitely! I’ve auditioned for a cool series, but we’ll have to see. What’s it like auditioning again? The first one I had, I was so nervous. When you play a character for seven years and then put yourself in front of brand new judges, it’s like being a fish out of water. Everything’s changed quite a bit since I used to audition, but you’ve just got to get back on the horse. What would be your dream role? My heart does lie with drama, but I’ve always had comedy in my bones so I’d love to get back into that. Michelle Keegan has just quit her lead role in Our Girl. Would you be interested in replacing her? Oh yeah, 100 per cent. I’d love to do that!
‘You don’t need to put implants in your bum’ 40
You recently revealed you lost a stone after embarking on a fitness programme. Is exercise part of your everyday life now? It is. For me, going to the gym is normal, but because I’ve been ill I haven’t been able to do as much. As soon as I’m fully recovered I’m getting back into exercising. I don’t want to be someone who puts [the weight] back on again and goes backwards and forwards. Is a size 12 the biggest you’ve ever been? I’d say so, yeah. When I put that weight on I didn’t feel comfortable in myself, I didn’t feel confident – I felt like a shell. Losing weight made me feel like Katie again. Do you want to lose any more weight? Leading up to the panto I lost another half a stone, so it’s maintaining that really. It’s more about getting toned. I’m happy with the size I am, but I want to be more defined. I loved the toned physique, but I wouldn’t want to go too thin. So do you live by the motto “strong not skinny”? After the Sinead storyline and then being ill, I really want to focus on my health this year. It’s more about being healthy on the inside than looking good and losing weight. I’m not about that. As a young actress, do you feel under pressure to look a certain way? Definitely, but I try not to let it affect me too much. I think everyone feels pressure because of social media. Everyone edits their pictures. Do you think social media puts unreasonable pressure on young women? Staring at pictures of girls who look perfect – none of it is real. And you can grow a bum in the gym if you really want to. You don’t need to put bloody implants in your bum. Are you still single? I am indeed. Have you been dating? I haven’t had time. My friends from home use apps, but I’m rubbish at stuff like that. Everyone’s doing it, so I might have to! Do you get guys sliding into your DMs? I do, but you need to meet them before you

know if you like them. I can’t be bothered messaging someone I’ve never met. Fair enough! You’ve been shortlisted for Best Serial Drama Performance for your role in Corrie at the National Television Awards. What was your reaction? I’m shocked! My main concern was not to offend anyone going through cervical cancer, so the fact people picked up the phone to vote is such a nice feeling and means so much to me. You’re the only female in the category and joked on Instagram that you’re “slutting it up for votes”… The photo [I posted] did look that way inclined, so I thought I’d say that as a joke, seeing as I’m the only girl! You seem like you’ve got banter… Yeah, I’m always joking around. You’ve got to – being serious all the time is no fun. How will you celebrate if you win? I’ll be having a big glass of champagne and a boogie on the dance floor. But even if I don’t, I feel like I’ve already won. I’m happy with Curtis. It always goes away when I get home.” Spending quality time together is proving to be a bit of a challenge for the pair at the moment as Maura is competing in this year’s Dancing On Ice with professional skater Alexander Demetriou. I have down days, but I just go and get myself a chippie,” she tells new. Charlotte is back on TV hosting the second series of dating show Love Squad, but the 27-year-old doesn’t need any help in that department as she says she’s ready for boyfriend Matthew Sarsfield to pop the question. “I need the next step. I’m a bit annoying really,” she giggles. Over to you, Charlotte…
Is Matthew weight conscious?
How are things with Matthew?
No, when I did Ex On The Beach, I was so obsessed with my weight
He weighs himself every day and if he puts on a pound he’s depressed. I think he sees me as an inspiration because he says, “I can’t believe you’re so chilled about having that belly.” I’d love to come home with a six-pack and see how he reacts.
Do you think he’d like it? No, he loves me the way I am.
Seeing as it’s a leap year, would you propose? I’m the princess of the relationship, but I’m more needy so people probably think it would be me. It’s been four years and he still hasn’t done it.
So you’re ready and waiting? I want everything now. But would I have to buy my own ring? Because I’m not doing that!
You’re very good at making fun of yourself. Have you always had self-confidence?
PHOTOS: Eroteme.co.uk, MTV
Really good. I didn’t drink for the whole of Christmas because I wanted to remember it and we did so many lovely things. We’ve grown from it. We only ever argue when we’re drunk or hungover.
What’s the worst date you’ve ever been on?
What was the turning point?
My first date on Celebs Go Dating. It was with a guy who looked like Pete Wicks and he kept going on about getting back with his ex. I still flaming kissed him!
My friends were like, “Why don’t you embrace how you are with us?” So I did. I make names for my insecurities and it makes me feel better. I want to inspire people. It’s OK to have a belly and bunions.
Too right! Congratulations on the second series of Love Squad… I’m buzzing. I’ve always wanted to be a host. She’s the host of Love Squad
Are you friends with any of your exes? No! When people say they’ve been friends with their exes for years, I think that’s a load of crap.
Do you want to do more hosting? Definitely! I love holding my own and because my dad [Les Dawson] was a comedy host I feel closer to him. I’d love to do stand-up, too.
Is Matthew supportive of you going into comedy?
Have you embarked on a new year health kick? Have I heck! I mean, I’d love to look like Alexandra Cane, but that’s not possible with the amount I eat.
and used to Facetune my pictures. I looked unrecognisable.

‘I’d rather eat kangaroo testicles than go on Strictly’ Rochelle Humes on her reality TV nightmares and family life
T
here have been persistent whispers of behind-thescenes drama at This Morning, so who better to give us the inside scoop than one of its regular presenters? But Rochelle Humes only has kind words for Phillip Schofield, gushing that she’ll “always be in debt” to the silver fox. The 30-year-old, who’s just got home from the studio when we catch up with her, has daughters Alaia-Mai, six, and two-year-old Valentina with husband Marvin, 34. And she tells new that, despite her hectic work schedule, family time is her top priority. “I’ll make one day really busy and then not let anyone touch the next day,” she explains. “That’s a day with my family.” Although questions about her sister Sophie Piper’s stint in Love Island are off limits, Rochelle is happy to talk about life with her adorable girls and working with her other half…
Hi Rochelle! You seem to love being part of the This Morning family…
She shared pics of her girls for the first time last week
Holly was in the jungle and I was filling in for three months with Phil, I owe a lot of what I learnt to that guy. He held my hand and supported me through the whole thing. He was such a generous host and was so nice to me. I’ll always be in debt to him over that.
Would you ever go into the jungle yourself?
The one I really wouldn’t be able to do is Strictly. I did the Christmas special once and I crumbled. I felt sick the whole day and I’m not usually nervous, but it gave me a new respect for people who do it. I said, “I’d rather eat a kangaroo testicle than have to do that!” Rochelle hosts The Hit

were like, “We want you to host the whole thing.” And then we waited for the right thing to come up and that was The Hit List.
We can’t believe Valentina is two now. Has she reached any new milestones? She’s talking so much and she’s just started pre-school. It was a bit of a moment because she had her little uniform on and her dress was touching her ankles. It’s too long because she’s so diddy.
Does she look up to Alaia? She really does, but she’s definitely got her own vibe going on. She’s different to Alaia in that she’s very self-assured. Her sister is her world, which is so cute. But they’re still little – we’ll see what happens when they get older and they’re rowing over outfits.
Talking of clothes, tell us about your latest New Look edit… For me it was about getting back to staples and key pieces. I’ve put in things I love like shirt jackets and trench coats and a lot of denim. You can’t look at a bit of glitter after New Year’s Eve!
You’re in great shape. Do you feel confident? I’ve become a lot more confident since I had children. I’ve become aware of how strong your body can be. I’m realistic and have a level head. I know good lighting is everything. Having said that, at certain times of the month there are days when nothing fits me. GEMMA MCCARTNEY Shop the Rochelle for New Look edit at newlook.com

message pinged up on my phone. “Hey Ginger!” it read. Cheeky so-and-so, I thought, but it grabbed my attention. “I’m blonde. It was just the lighting,” I replied, opening up the guy’s profile. His name was Tim Pike and he was 22. It was August 2016 and I’d created a dating profile on OkCupid two weeks earlier. I’d been single for eight months and wanted to meet someone. My mates had boyfriends and I hated being a third wheel on nights out. Tim and I got talking and it was so easy. We had the same sense of humour and he seemed up for a laugh. Two weeks later, he invited me to stay with him at his parents’ place in Glossop, Derbyshire. I was excited, but also worried he’d be different in real life. But Tim looked as good in the flesh as he did in his pictures – gorgeous and muscley. His dad had driven him to the station to meet me and on the journey back to their house, we all got on so well that my nerves vanished. That night, Tim’s parents went out and we settled down to watch TV. The next day, I didn’t want to go home, but I couldn’t tell if Tim felt the same way. “Let’s hang out again,” he said, smiling, much to my relief. We started dating and at first Tim was fun to be with. But in October, we were chilling on the sofa one night when he casually asked, “How many people have you been with?” When I told him I’d had “a couple of boyfriends” his face twisted. “It’s disgusting that you’re not pure,” he spat. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say. A few days later, Tim broke up with me. “But why?” I spluttered. “Because you’ve been with other men,” he sneered. I headed home, sobbing, but he texted me later that day. “I’m so sorry,” he said. “I don’t know what I was

thinking. Let’s get back together.” I loved him so much I decided to overlook his outburst. But Tim continued to pick fights with me and broke things off several times, only to later say he didn’t mean it. One day, he even smacked me across the face and started to throttle me. I struggled, but I was helpless. I could feel myself passing out, but then he let go and walked silently out of the room. By then I was terrified of him and wanted to leave, but I was too scared. If he put his arm round me, I’d flinch. He got obsessed with the dark web and started sending me and my family pictures on Facebook of skinned and decapitated Tim was fun to bodies that he’d found on be with at first the internet. “This will be you,” he captioned them.
I was so scared of upsetting him that I laughed it off as if it was a joke. “Please break up with him, Nicole,” Mum and Dad begged. “He’s just messing around,” I insisted. “He’s not going to do anything. I know him better than you do.” But I was playing it down so as not to worry them. By July 2017, I’d had enough. I broke up with him and started seeing someone else. But in September, Tim found out and suddenly said he wanted me back. Even though it was madness, I still loved him so I agreed to give it another go. “I promise I’ll change,” Tim vowed. But after I moved in with him at his parents’ house in 2018, he got worse. He’d get so angry if I talked to my friends and family that I stopped calling them.
ISOLATED AND DESPERATE Back then, I worked as a waitress at a hotel in Manchester. After my day shifts I’d spend every night with Tim, gaming online in our bedroom. I barely saw his parents and they never spoke to me about him, so I kept my fears to myself. But as the weeks wore on, I was getting more and more isolated and desperate. I realised I couldn’t live like this any more. One night in April, Tim turned to me and asked, “Do you see a future between us?” I hesitated and then found courage to say no. “Does this mean it’s over?” he said. “Yes, I’ll move out tomorrow after work,” I replied. I held my breath as what I’d said sank in, but he just seemed to accept it. I slept soundly that night, glad it was all over.

said I wasn’t to blame. “I’m so glad you’re alive,” Dad said, hugging me tight. The next day, I gave a statement to the police and spent the next two weeks recovering in hospital. In July 2019, Tim, then 25, pleaded guilty to attempted murder at Derby Crown Court. I went to the trial because I wanted to show him he hadn’t defeated me. He glared at me throughout, but it just made me realise how pathetic he was. The court heard how I survived thanks to the incredible work of the medics at the scene. I also learned Tim had taken a picture of me after the attack and sent it to one of his friends. Judge Robert Egbuna told him he was highly dangerous and gave him an indefinite hospital order as he’d been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. I’d had no idea Tim was mentally ill. I just thought he was eccentric. I don’t know when he’ll get out, but the thought that one day his doctors could decide he’s safe to be released terrifies me. I’ve suffered nightmares and flashbacks since the attack, but I’m so glad I survived. The attack wasn’t my fault. I was manipulated into thinking I needed Tim, but I didn’t – and I’m still standing. REAL LIFE The family will always be grateful to Rupert’s donor
Holly with Rupert and Hector following her charity run for Anthony Nolan
I remember seeing that magic bag of red bone marrow arrive and feeling an enormous sense of relief. Finally, we had what we’d been waiting so long for. I blessed the person who’d given us this wonderful gift, although I knew I’d probably never know who they were.
SWALLOWING PHOBIA But Rupert faced an uphill struggle when he was hit by a post-transplant complication called graft versus host disease, when the donated cells and the recipient’s cells attack each other. He also developed a phobia of swallowing medicine. We so wanted to persuade him, but everything we and the kind nurses said terrified him. The drugs eventually had to be fed directly into his stomach and vein via a tube and Hickman line. It felt like two steps forward, one step back. Poor Rupert even developed steroid-induced diabetes, which meant even more tests and injections. Thankfully, that eventually went away when he came off the steroids and after 88 days – during which time I’d barely seen Hector as Rupert needed someone with him at all times and Toby couldn’t take time off work – we were allowed home. We still weren’t out of the woods, though. We had to keep everything spotless to reduce the risk of Rupert getting an infection. He couldn’t go out in public much or be around crowds. But with regular blood tests monitoring his progress, Rupert began to grow stronger.
We kept in touch and I arranged to meet Billy and Kate for lunch at a local pub in November that year. I agonised over buying a present and settled on a book called How Can I Say Thank You?, which said everything I couldn’t. Rupert made him a little Lego model of him and Kate on their wedding day. Lego was one of the things that kept Rupert busy in hospital, so that felt very touching. Meeting Billy in person was amazing. He’s such a selfless, incredible person, and Rupert, now 11, has his whole life ahead of him thanks to Billy. All I wanted to do was give him a hug, which is a strange thing to think about someone you’re meeting for the first time.

WORDS: Gemma McCartney, Gillian Crawley PHOTOS: Getty
METHOD
■ Trim any fat off the steak and cut into thin strips across the grain of the meat so the beef stays tender when cooked. ■ In a shallow dish, mix together the soy sauce, lime juice, sesame oil and chilli. Add the steak and turn until well coated in the marinade. Cover with cling film and chill in the fridge for several hours or overnight. ■ Heat 1 tbsp sunflower oil in a wok or large frying pan. Stir-fry half of the steak over a high heat for 2 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside. Repeat with the remaining steak strips, reserving the marinade. ■ Add the remaining oil to the pan and stir-fry the mushrooms for 2 minutes. Add the broccoli, stir-fry for 1 minute, then add the pak choi and bean sprouts and stir-fry for another minute. ■ Return the steak to the pan, pour in the marinade and toss together over the heat for 2 minutes until piping hot. Serve at once with noodles or egg fried rice. Recipe from kikkoman.co.uk
Dinner with... MICHAEL GRIFFITHS FOR MY LAST SUPPER I’D HAVE a steak with seasoned veg and sweet potato mash. T THE STRANGEST T THING I’VE EVER EATEN is snails – they’re a little bit tasteless. I had them on Love Island and I had them at my brother’s birthday party as well. They were dead chewy.
MY GUILTY PLEASURE is all chocolate. I can’t not eat chocolate. AS A CHILD I REFUSED TO EAT veg. But now I eat loads!
I DON’T REALLY HAVE A SIGNATURE DISH. I cook like my dad, just a little bit of this and a bit of that and see what works.
THE BEST MEAL OUT I’VE EVER HAD was in Dubai, where a guy ordered loads of food for us.
TO IMPRESS A PARTNER I’D COOK jerk or Cajun chicken. I’d bake it slightly and then pan fry it. I’d serve it with steamed veg.
MY IDEAL DINNER GUEST would be Eva Mendes.

HIV: WHY DO WE IGNORE SAFE SEX ADVICE TODAY? One in five now considers the HIV virus to be a “disease of the 90s” and a quarter don’t know it’s an STI
W
hen Public Health England announced in September that HIV diagnoses in the UK had fallen for the third consecutive year – to the lowest levels since 2000 – it initially sounded like progress had been made spreading awareness and the safer sex message. But read beyond the positive headlines and we still have some way to go when it comes to persuading people to get tested and know their status. According to the Terrence Higgins Trust, the most recent estimates suggest there were 103,800 people living with HIV in the UK in 2018. Of these, one in 14 is undiagnosed so do not know they are HIV positive. In fact, almost half (43 per cent) of the 4,453 diagnoses made in 2018 came late, which creates a tenfold increase in risk of death within a year, compared to those diagnosed promptly. When treated effectively, the virus doesn’t shorten life expectancy and patients won’t infect sexual partners. Now, new research is shedding light on why people aren’t getting tested. A third of us think HIV is no longer a threat in 2019, a quarter are not aware it is sexually transmitted and 19 per cent dismiss it as “a disease of the 90s”.
66
So perhaps it’s unsurprising people have also become complacent about safe sex. Almost three quarters of those questioned have had unprotected sex, with more than a quarter saying this was because they dislike condoms and one in 10 claiming they “don’t worry about STIs”. Louise Ball of home HIV testing company INSTI, which carried out the survey, says, “While it is good news that new diagnoses are in decline, HIV still remains a very real threat in 2019. “People are simply playing the lottery with their own sexual health – and potentially that of others – by not being aware of the very real dangers. While HIV is potentially no longer the death sentence it once was, people are risking lives by not being aware.” The survey also shows that while people have become complacent over the years, the ignorance of the 80s remains, with 22 per cent still thinking you can catch HIV from kissing, 13 per cent believing you can become infected after an insect bite and one in 10 thinking you can get it from a toilet seat. And worryingly, INSTI also found that fewer than 50 per cent of those questioned would tell their current and previous partners if they had an STI – and one in 10 have put off having
a sexual health check for up to a year, despite having symptoms. Isabel Inman, from the young people’s sexual health and wellbeing charity Brook, says, “It’s clear from these findings societal stigma is playing a huge part in limiting people’s ability to stay sexually healthy. This is why we all need to work together to change attitudes. “By promoting and normalising safer sex, healthy relationships and getting tested, we can empower people to take charge of their own sexual health and wellbeing.”

‘When the nurse told me it was HIV I went cold with shock’
Becky, 33, a former teacher from Sheffield, was diagnosed in 2015. She now works for an HIV information and advice service
I’d been with my ex-husband since I was 18 and my new partner was the first person I’d slept with after my marriage ended. We had used protection the first few times and then one time we didn’t have any condoms, but we got carried away in the moment. Neither of us had asked the other about sexual health. A while later, my partner was contacted by an ex who said they had tested positive for gonorrhoea, so we both went for a sexual health check-up. When the clinic
called and asked me to come back in, I assumed it was because I had caught gonorrhoea. So when the nurse told me I had HIV, I went cold with shock. They tell you straight away that you can take medication that means you can lead a normal life and don’t necessarily have to worry about your health or life expectancy. But it’s hard to take in at that moment because when you hear HIV you think the worst. Everyone has unprotected sex – people don’t like wearing condoms – but at the same time they think they shouldn’t hug or use a pen after someone who is HIV positive. I don’t think people were educated [by the early
campaigns of the 80s], I think they were miseducated. People thought you could get HIV from kissing, hot tubs and toilet seats, but it’s not the case and has never been the case. What I took from the campaigns of the 80s was that HIV+ people are a risk and are dirty and I don’t think that’s a unique point of view. People were scared and it was very, very effective at first, but now it is 30 years later and HIV has gone off the radar because it’s not really killing people in this country any more. Everyone should get tested regardless of age, relationship status or sexuality. You can do it in the clinic or take a self-test at home, but be tested.

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Immunodeficiency refers to the weakening of the immune system by the virus. HIV has been passed between humans for many decades but was only identified in the early 80s. In the 80s and early 90s, most people with HIV were eventually diagnosed with AIDS. But now, thanks to modern antiretroviral treatment, very few people in the UK develop serious HIV-related illnesses. The term AIDS isn’t used much by UK doctors. Instead they talk about late-stage or advanced HIV. If left untreated, infection with HIV progresses through a series of stages – from flu-like symptoms, then other infections, leading to late-stage HIV or AIDS. If someone with HIV has a detectable viral load (the amount of the virus in the blood), they can pass on HIV through blood, semen, vaginal fluid, anal mucus and breast milk. HIV is not passed on by spitting, sneezing or coughing, nor by kissing or general social contact. The virus cannot survive for very long once outside the human body. Studies have shown that a person on effective treatment who has an undetectable viral load cannot pass on HIV to their sexual partners.

LOVELY LISBON
or a European city break, Lisbon ticks all the boxes. One of the world’s oldest cities, it blends history with modern life very well – a 100-year-old landmark may sit next to a hip hotel, but not look out of place. ‘GETTING BACK CK TO TRAINING WAS AS HARD’

Kelvin, your former partner Oti can’t do the tour. What’s it like working with Janette instead? Kelvin: Amazing. It’s a joy to dance with her, I’m feeding off her excitement! She’s done this tour numerous times, so she’s been telling me what to expect. Janette: Oti is one of my best mates. I talk to her almost every day so we’ve been chatting all the time. The great thing is I was mates with Kelvin throughout the whole series. It was organic when we started dancing together because we’d already gelled. Has the win with Oti fully sunk in? Kelvin: I guess it’s started to. It was a good chance over Christmas to take stock of everything that happened. It was an amazing way to end the year. Now we have the tour, which will be a great month up and down the country. What was it like coming back after Christmas? Kelvin: I didn’t feel as “dance fit”. The first few days of training were hard. I’d forgotten how physically taxing dancing is. We’ve had a couple of weeks of rehearsals now though, so I feel better. Will your family be coming along to watch the tour? Kelvin: Yes! They’ll definitely be coming to watch in Manchester, which is my home town. Janette: It’s so nice to see all the kids in the audience. They get very excited. Will you miss your children while you’re touring? Kelvin: Yes, I think most working parents find it hard to be away from their young ones, but it’s a great opportunity to be able to dance in front of thousands of people!

EMMA ND BARTON A O GRAZIAN DI PRIMA
‘I CAN’T BELIEVE I WAS THE LAST GIRL STANDING’ What’s it like dancing with Graziano and not Anton du Beke on the tour? Emma: Not many of the girls can say they’ve had two lovely partners, so it’s really nice! Graziano, did Anton give you any tips for teaching Emma? Graziano: The only tip he gave me was enjoy every second. Emma is brilliant, he was right. Emma, was it a nice feeling to take Anton so far in the competition? Emma: I still can’t believe I’ve actually taken part in that show. I was just so happy to get to where we did. It was
a mind-blowing experience to be the last girl standing. What was it like getting back into your costumes after the holidays? Emma: I’m quite lucky – I didn’t have an awful lot of time off because I got to the final. It was, “Quick, sort the family out, have a bit of Christmas, then I went and did a health spa so I was very well behaved. I’m more worried about when this is over! Are you missing EastEnders? Emma: Oh yeah, but I was still watching it. Not long now and I’ll be back!
:
‘MY BABY PLANS ARE ON HOLD’
Are you happy to be reunited? Johannes: Absolutely – I’m with my Catherine! Catherine: We stayed in touch over Christmas. He can’t get away from me. You said Johannes could be your birthing partner when you have your next baby… Catherine: Babes, my husband has got PTSD from the last birth so I said, “It’s fine, I’ll take Jojo.” Has a second baby been put on hold until after the tour? Catherine: Yeah – at some point we will have a second one. I say, “When the time’s right”, but I don’t know when en
that will be because I’m so busy. But I would love to have another one at some point. How did you feel getting back into your costumes after Christmas? Catherine: I texted Johannes over Christmas because he went home to South Africa and said, “Mumma’s had a few mince pies. I might be a bit heavier.” I tried not to go overboard, but by the time I’d finished Strictly all I wanted to do was eat and sleep because I’d worked so hard. We’re straight back to it now so I’m sure we we’llll burn those pies off.
‘I HAD A MINI FREAK-OUT’ How are rehearsals going? Saffron: Good! I remembered a lot more than I expected to, which is always amazing. AJ: I’d say it was my teaching, but you did your homework. Saffron: Although the other day I had a mini freak-out backstage. I was like, “AJ, I can’t remember the steps!” He’s like, “Your muscle memory is going to kick back in,” I’m like, “It’s not kicking back in.” Are you glad you got to be partners for the tour, too? Saffron: So glad because we weren’t sure if we were going to be together. I said to AJ, I don’t want to do the tour with somebody else because I feel guilty.
Have you gained lots of new followers thanks to Strictly? Saffron: I wouldn’t necessarily say my social media, but when I’m out and about people from a different age demographic come up to me now. Before, the people who followed me were either my age or a bit older or younger, but never would I get my nan’s friend coming up to me. What’s next for you? Saffron: My dream has always been to be on the West End stage, so that’s something I would love to take up in the future. AJ: And I’m going on tour with Curtis, so throw that in there!

Comedy legend Jennifer Saunders ers gives us the gossip on her gritty Netflix project
W
e’re used to seeing her hamming it up in comedy roles such as Ab Fab’s Edina Monsoon, but Jennifer Saunders is playing it straight in Netflix’s upcoming must-watch series, The Stranger. The eight-part psychological thriller, based on Harlan Coben’s novel, sees Richard Armitage as Adam, a man whose seemingly charmed life is blown apart by a stranger’s revelation about his wife Corinne, played by Dervla Kirwan. After Corinne does a runner, the mysterious meddler starts dropping more bombshells among the unsuspecting community, including Jennifer’s character Heidi, who discovers a shocking secret about her daughter. Ahead of the series premiere, Jennifer reveals what drew her to the role and her joy at filming in one of her favourite cities… So, Jen, how would you describe your character, Heidi? The last show I binge-watched was Waterloo Road. I never watched it when it was on TV, but they put all of the series on BBC iPlayer and all my friends were like, “You’ve gotta watch it!” Now I’m obsessed with it. I’m on the seventh series, but I only started a couple of months ago, so I think that’s quite impressive. The funniest people on television are Keith Lemon or Ant and Dec, I’m a massive fan. I always watch Celebrity Juice and Through The Keyhole. I love Ant and Dec on everything, but my favourite is Saturday Night Takeaway. I would love to be on one of those shows. If I ever met Ant and Dec, I’d be like, “Right, life completed!” My guilty pleasure is Cake Boss on TLC. If there’s nothing really on, I’ll always sit and watch an episode. My dream co-stars would be my friends Olivia Attwood and Vas J Morgan. I love them both and I loved doing Celebs Go Dating with them – we had so much fun together. I’d love to do another show with them.
The show I never miss is Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. I don’t really like going out if it’s on. I’d rather stay in and watch it. The best films ever made are The Parent Trap and Eloise At Christmastime. I try not to watch them too much so they stay as my favourites, but if I’m having a movie day I’ll always watch one of them.
TOUR
BALLETBOYZ
Forget everything you thought you knew about ballet, these ‘Boyz’ are here to show you there’s more to the art than tutus and pirouettes. The dance troupe is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new tour, Deluxe, kicking off nationwide in March. The show sees Shanghai-based dancer and choreographer Xie Xin making her UK debut
choreographing a new story set to an original score, while other incredible collaborators will also be joining the fun. Deluxe fuses sensational dance with original music in the company’s unique style – and trust us, you won’t have seen anything like it! For more details and tickets, see balletboyz.com

The last song I downloaded was One by Lewis Capaldi. I listen to it all the time. As soon as I get in the car, that’s the first song I listen to. I love him. My karaoke classic is I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston. It was my birthday the other day so I’m gonna be having a karaoke party at mine and that will be the first song that will be sung. The website you would find me browsing would probably be Boohoo, clothes shopping! Amy has recently completed MuscleFood’s Do The Unthinkable diet and fitness programme. FILM
THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD STARRING: DEV PATEL, HUGH LAURIE, TILDA SWINTON, PETER CAPALDI CERT: PG WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
Scottish director Armando Iannucci, best known for satirical fare such as Veep and The Thick Of It, provides a fresh twist on the classic Charles Dickens novel by casting a British-Asian actor in the title role. Step forward Skins favourite Dev Patel, who has come a very long way – much like Copperfield himself, in fact. For those who didn’t pay attention in English GCSE, the story follows David as
he navigates his way through a tricky childhood and into the adult world, sharing his experiences with a variety of eccentric Dickensian characters along the way. This version is a stark contrast to the far darker original tale – instead it’s upbeat, funny and with a fresh new perspective.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
The fact that a traditional white Victorian character is played by a BAME actor
is enough of a reason to celebrate this film – Dev is simply excellent as David and he’s not the only brilliant British actor on the bill. Tilda and Hugh, who play Betsey Trotwood and Mr Dick respectively, are also fantastic. Get ready to be transported to the Victorian era, but not necessarily as you know it!
VERDICT: ANOTHER MAGIC COPPERFIELD
THE GRUDGE
STARRING: ANDREA RISEBOROUGH, JACKI WEAVER CERT: 15 WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
If the name rings a bell that’s because this is yet another spin-off of the iconic Japanese horror franchise that has so far spawned a Hollywood remake, two sequels and now this rather unnecessary reboot. The story hasn’t changed – ”naive human investigates haunted house that curses anyone who enters it” – but a decent cast, including former Oscar nominee Jacki, just about make it interesting. Our advice? Go and watch the Japanese version, Ju-On: The Grudge instead.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
Lots of gore, lots of jumps, lots of random body parts flying about. This is designed for maximum scares, so prepare to hide behind your popcorn throughout. The talented actors probably deserve better than yet another retelling of the same old story but, that said, if you want a cheesy, harmless frightfest you could do a lot worse.
VERDICT: CHEAP THRILLS

You might remember that James Corden isn’t my most favourite funnyman in the world, but I’ll have to grudgingly admit he does have his moments. One being the amazing Gavin & Stacey Christmas special, which seems to be the most popular programme for years, and another is his recent confession that he wears Spanx when he’s presenting The Late Late Show. These unattractive beige undies have hitherto been the preserve of wobbly 30-somethings like Bridget Jones or fans of Hervé Léger bandage dresses, so it’s quite refreshing to know there may be an army of men out there too going about their business with a layer of thick Lycra under their suits. It must get awfully sweaty der those studio lights under hough, James! though,
J.LO’S ITALIAN ESCAPE Doesn’t it rankle with you when Hollywood stars with the world at their ch of a quieter feet profess to be in search life? This time it’s the turn of Jennifer Lopez, who’s claimed all she wants is andscape. a nice view of an Italian landscape. In a recent Vanity Fair article, the actress and singer said, “I would love to find another life where it’s a little bit more simple and organic and where uy bread, and I get to ride a bike, and buy put it in my basket… just eat and paint, here there or sit in a rocking chair where was a beautiful view of ann olive tree or an oak tree and I could just smell.” What a load of rubbish! J.Lo has worked ridiculously hard all her life to get right to the top of the tree. I think she would be bored out of her mind if all she had to do all day was sit under one.

BREAD OF HEAVEN? Give us this day our daily bread – but ideally not a loaf made out of mung beans that costs £5.95 a pop from Amazon. Yes, Victoria Beckham has revealed she does actually eat in an Instagram post and it is something approximating bread, although not the kind you and I chow down on a daily basis. Posh’s snack of choice is a slice of Ezekiel 4:9 bread slathered with – yes, you’ve gue guessed it – smashed avocado. T name comes from a The pas passage in the Bible’s Book E of Ezekiel, which reads, “Take also unto thee wheat, and bar barley, and beans, and lentils and millet, and spelt and put
them in one vessel.” Naturally, some bright spark in the States came up with the idea of making a loaf and selling it to people with more money than sense and a belief that one slice of Mother’s Pride might kill them. Or at the very least, lead to some bloating. I’ve never understood this obsession with the evils of bread. I couldn’t get through the day without some toast spread with lashings of butter and Marmite!
WANTED: A LACKEY FOR LILY
If there’s a candidate for The Worst Job In Showbusiness™ it must surely be this – being Lily Allen’s assistant. In the same week that the singer advertised for a PA, she also posted on Insta to say her boiler had packed up and she had rats in the roof. I doubt Lily’s going to have many applicants now she’s made it clear the role involves rodent removal rather than red carpet events. For most people, the upside of being an A-list dogsbody is that you get to hang around a nice pad and hear all the celeb gossip! Even the presence of Lily’s boyfriend, Stranger Things hottie David Harbour, wouldn’t persuade me to sign up for this gig.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN MY LIFE has to be my mum. I chat to her at least twice a day. If I want to have a whinge about anything, I go to my mum for a little bit of a moan. She puts me straight as well, so if I’m being too negative or hard on myself, she will give me a bit of perspective.
I BELIEVE THERE’S SOMETHING ELSE OUT THERE. My mum always tells me that when I was a kid I saw a ghost. I remember seeing something in the corner and saying to my mum, “Who’s that man?” And she was like, “There’s “There’ no one here.”
