ungle queen Jacqueline Jossa is ignoring the critics and is determined to show that her marriage to Dan Osborne is stronger than ever. The defiant star insisted in a TV interview with Lorraine Kelly that she wanted to “hit a restart button” following shocking claims about her husband’s infidelity. “Jac’s making it her mission to prove everyone wrong and make a success of their marriage, but she’s not an idiot,” an insider told new. “He’s not 100 per cent off the hook.” Dan, 28, and Jac, 27, have been at the centre of cheating rumours after Chloe Ayling, who was on Celebrity Big Brother with Dan, claimed she had a threesome with him and another CBB housemate, Natalie Nunn. Despite denying the accusations, Dan took to Instagram to apologise for any previous “mistakes” he’d made in his two-year marriage. It was also reported Jac asked Dan to change his number to prevent more women from contacting him. Now, Dan is pulling out all the stops to please his wife. “Dan’s been treating her like a princess,” continued our mole. “He’s been showering her with gifts, encouraging her to make plans for a girls’ holiday and, basically, trying to show her that he’s a changed man.” But Jac – who has daughters Ella, five, and Mia, 18 months, with the former TOWIE star – isn’t making things easy for him.

On a family shopping trip to Lakeside

“Jac’s going to be keeping check of everything Dan gets up to,” our source added. “He’s turned over his phone and has done everything she’s asked since she got out of the jungle.” And while it looked like Dan’s hard work was starting to pay off as they enjoyed a date night recently, those close to Jac have encouraged her to keep her wits about her. “She’s vowing to make things work, but her pals are urging her not to let any bad behaviour slide this time,” explained our mole. “She’s taking it all on board and knows she’s taking a risk, but she’s doing it for the girls and for her family.” We hope you get your happy ever after, Jac.

aroline Flack ended 2019 on a low when she was arrested following a row with her boyfriend Lewis Burton, but it looks like she’s wiping the slate clean this year. Just days after her shock arrest, Caroline announced she was stepping down as host of the winter series of Love Island, saying, “In order to not detract attention from the upcoming series, I feel the best thing I can do is to stand down for series six.” As well as taking a break from the show, Caroline, 40, is also said to be pausing her other work commitments. A source revealed that she had been lining up a “six-figure advertising deal” with Polaroid, but it’s now been put on hold. And in a bid for a fresh start, she’s set to move out of her £1.1 million north London home – to which the police were called following a “domestic disturbance”. EXCLUSIVE

’ ! t t u b g i b y m ‘I love Davina McCall on her changing body as she gets older and why people think she’s a “lunatic”

S

he’s the queen of fitness DVDs and has released at least one a year for the past 14 years. But Davina McCall hasn’t filmed one for 2020 – instead she’s trying her hand at a new fitness website, Own Your Goals. “It seems like nobody has a DVD player any more and we all download everything. So I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have somewhere where you could bank all of the workouts, collate the DVDs and trainers in one place, and offer something different to what’s already being offered online?’” the 52-year-old tells new. Davina is always in incredible shape, so we’re surprised when she confesses she occasionally has the odd day off from exercise. “Of course I like a duvet day,” she says. “I will do that if it means I can fit in workouts on other days. If I’ve got a crazily long day, I won’t work out that day. I sometimes do some toning just before bed, so I’m nice and tired.” Here, the presenter, who’s mum to Holly, 16, Tilly, 14, and Chester, 13, reveals why she loves her bum and her tips on how to shape up... How fit are you feeling at the moment? I’m feeling good! I cannot imagine there ever being a time when I won’t exercise, no matter how

old I am. I took a bit of a step back in the summer and relaxed, which I often do, but since autumn I’m back in a routine. What types of exercise do you like? I love going to spin classes, running and doing toning exercises at home. I’ve just brought out a range of exercise equipment with Amazon, so I’ve got all this lovely new stuff to use. I also do this thing called euphoric running. It’s very funny. I run along with my hands out and my fingers spread so I can feel the air on my palms. I smile away at people. Some people smile and wave back and some people must be thinking, “This woman is a lunatic, avoid her at all costs.” I call it euphoric running because it makes me feel so good, buoyant, bouncy and happy about life. I’ll often run from meeting to meeting. It’s like a one-person party. What are your current fitness goals? I set myself one the other day, actually. I’m doing a 30-day challenge on my new website. I’ve decided that I want to tone up my legs a bit. As I’ve got older my skin is a little bit different on my legs. It’s looser and I’m realising that I need to build a bit of muscle under there again, because in your fifties it’s really hard to maintain muscle. I’m having to work quite a lot harder and I’m

making sure I don’t leave out protein in my meals. I don’t massively feel like eating meat any more, so I’m getting protein from other sources like beans and chickpeas. It’s just a delicate balance to make sure I’m eating the right stuff so I can maintain my muscle mass. You’ve got great legs! They are probably the bit of my body I worry about most. It’s funny because when I was younger I spent my life wishing I had a smaller bum but now, God bless the Kardashians, I feel socially acceptable with my big butt, so it’s good. There’s a Twitter account called Davina’s Bum! When I feel low I go and look at it and feel better about myself. Do you work on your bum a lot? I don’t do anything bum specific, but if you’re working on your legs, you’re working on your bum, glutes and hamstrings. Squats and lunges are going to be good for your bum, but running is the only thing that shapes my legs in a way that I like. It elongates them. I do squats and lunges for strength because if you want to run well, you need the strength in your legs to be able to carry you. I want to feel that power.

Davina has launched a range of exercise equipment

Her fitness website includes yoga

14

How do you give yourself a kick up the backside to do exercise when you just can’t be bothered? I want to feel good. It’s literally that simple. The mental health benefits of working out are amazing and that’s huge for me. It’s massive. It’s like the difference between whether I feel sluggish or I skip out of bed. On a Saturday morning, I always set my alarm to get to spin for eight o’clock, and I don’t want to do that. Saturday is a lie-in day. I don’t want to wake up at seven and go to a class, but afterwards I’m buzzing and I always have a great Saturday because I’ve kicked it off in the best way possible. What’s your take on the skinny jab trend? I can’t tell you on how many different levels that is so dangerous. The idea of anyone injecting themselves to lose weight is horrific full stop. It’s like the vitamin drips – it’s got to be wrong. You should be getting everything you need from your food intake. There are no short cuts to losing weight. What advice would you give to people who want to drop a few pounds post Christmas? If I want to lose a bit of weight I will up my exercise and eat less. Ignore everything anybody else says, that is what’s going to work. Just exercising more is not going to do it. Food is a huge part of meaningful weight loss and I keep sugar to a minimum, but I don’t cut out any food groups. If you’re trying to be healthy, eat loads of veg, and try new veg and experiment. Get adventurous in 2020! So you’re not still sugar-free? I have it occasionally. I’d love never to eat sugar again, but I keep doing it. Actually, I think I should just say, “I’ll do it every now and again,” otherwise I’ll just beat myself up about it when I do eat it.

You always seem to have so much energy. Can you get by on very little sleep? No, no, no. I need seven or eight hours’ sleep. On a school run day I wake up at 6am or 6.30am. But given a choice, my perfect time frame would be midnight to 8am. All my kids lie in a bit more now, which is such a treat. Chester is 13 and he will fall asleep anywhere. He got out of bed this morning then fell asleep on the kitchen table, and he falls asleep in the car on the way to school. He’s exhausted all the time because he’s growing. NEW YOU

W

Hypnotherapist Adam Cox shares his advice on how to beat your vices this year

hether it’s drinking more booze than we should, splashing cash we don’t have or putting off an

important task, we’re all guilty of having bad habits. Here, Harley Street hypnotherapist Adam Cox tells us how to conquer them in 2020…

Reduce drinking “Cutting down on alcohol is great for your health. Some people find it helpful to introduce boundaries when it comes to drinking, such as only drinking at social events, having a glass of water in between drinks or only drinking at the weekend.”

Improve your sleep “Many people have interrupted sleep due to checking social media late at night. For a good night’s sleep, keep your phone in a different room. Waking up earlier rather than having a lie-in will also allow you to sleep better the following night.”

Stop procastinating

Curb your spending Avoid the junk “Watch out for the three white poisons – sugar, salt and flour – as these are mainly found in processed foods. A good hypnotherapist can genuinely make you believe these ingredients are poisonous and you’ll then find it easier to reduce the quantity you eat.”

“Procrastination is normally caused by a form of perfectionism – the idea being that you won’t be able to do the thing to the required level. The other reason is that the thing itself – for example, doing your tax return – is an undesirable thing to do. “To beat feelings of perfectionism, be willing to start with the resources you have, knowing that you can always improve on things later. If a task is challenging, then the best strategy is to do “Just as we spring clean our the most undesirable homes, it can also be useful to thing first so that the rest spring clean our friendships of the day will be easy and and evaluate whether the key enjoyable in comparison.” people in your life support you.

Figure out your Face your fears friendships “Go through the contact list in your phone and add the primary emotion you feel when you’re with them to their surname. This will help you work out who makes you feel good and who makes you feel bad so you can limit the time spent with them.”

16

Quit smoking “Breaking this habit is a very positive step. Your body isn’t addicted to smoking, it’s addicted to nicotine. Once your body is over the nicotine addiction, which takes less than a week, then it’s the psychological addiction you have. Hypnosis and CBT [cognitive behavioural therapy] can be particularly effective for overcoming this.”

“Fears can stop us from living the best life possible. Whether that’s a full-blown phobia or simply anxiety around certain things, making a decision to overcome your fears is one of the most positive decisions you can make. Check out my free video at phobiaguru. com to help beat fears and phobias.”

“The key to being clever with money is twofold. Firstly, create a budget and break it down into different parts of your life. For example, a budget for food, clothes and entertainment. There are apps that can help you work out your spending. “Secondly, give yourself time before making a purchase. Most reckless spending is on impulsive purchases. If you delay before buying, in many cases you’ll realise you no longer want the item.”

Stay positive “Most people don’t consider negative thinking a habit, but if we define habits as something you’re able to do frequently without being consciously aware of what you’re doing, then it’s definitely a habit. CBT techniques can help with this – one is to have an elastic band around your wrist. If you catch yourself thinking negatively, you can sting your wrist to create a pattern interrupt. Another approach is to use NLP [neuro-linguistic programming] techniques, such as the swish pattern, where you quickly replace negative thoughts with a positive and motivating alternative.”

S

Bag your dream date! Celebs Go Dating love coach Anna Williamson tells us how how to find The One in 2020

truggling to find your perfect match? Well, you’re not on your own. There are millions of eligible singletons in the UK, so we asked Celebs Go Dating relationship guru Anna Williamson to give us her top tips on exactly how to track them down…

Get quizzical “It’s important to remember both of you will be feeling the same first or second date nerves, so prepare a couple of interesting facts or stories that say something about you. The aim is to show off your true personality and depth of character. If the conversation goes a bit stale, have some open questions ready – ones that require more than a yes or no. Make sure you have your own answers lined up so you can keep up the flow.”

Don’t play games

“I don’t like game-playing because you get caught up in wasting time and emotional energy. Use your common sense – don’t bombard someone with message after message if they haven’t replied to you. Think of it as messaging a friend or a family member. Don’t obsess over the reply. If it gets too much, put your phone on flight mode, stick it in another room and do something to occupy yourself.”

Take your time “It’s a very personal decision, but if you’re looking to date someone I wouldn’t recommend jumping in the sack hours after meeting them because it can send out the wrong impression – even if you’re both up for it! The anticipation of what’s to come can be exciting and sexy. Have a handful of dates, really get to know someone and gradually let the barriers down on a personal and sexual level.”

Body language is key Have fun

COMPILED BY: Karmel Doughty PHOTOS: Getty

“Body language is something I spend a lot of time making people aware of. Crossing your arms and legs, hunching over and not making eye contact all subconsciously scream, ‘I’m not available.’ If you want to engage with someone and build rapport, which is a key part of dating, make sure you have open body language, hold your head up and look your date in the eye.”

“Dating can be fast and furious and you can lose interest, especially if you’re not meeting the right people, so don’t say yes to dating just anyone. If you’re feeling a bit jaded with the dating scene, only go for it if you’re doing it for the right reasons. If you go in with a positive attitude, you’re much more likely to enjoy yourself and have fun.”

Scrub up “Alway present a true, “Always version of yourself. You wouldn’t turn up best ve to a job jo interview looking like a scruff and expect expe to get the job and I feel the same about abou dating. If you take pride in yourself it translates, so we feel better, we become tran more mor confident and have more self-esteem. A great gr benchmark to start off a date is to dress up in the same way you would if it dr were a special occasion or you were going out for a nice dinner with friends.”

Ditch the ‘types’ “Everyone talks about a type, but I always encourage people to think outside the box and go for someone who isn’t who you’d normally go for, whether that’s in terms of looks or personality. It’s good to try to experience dating as many different people as possible. It takes confidence, but see what happens.”

et’s face it – most of us overindulged over the festive period, but who better to motivate us to get fit and fabulous than Chloe Madeley? The personal trainer is full of energy when we catch up with her, despite the fact she didn’t get much sleep the night before. “I’ve surprised myself that I’ve managed to be fully functioning on just two hours’ sleep!” she tells us. When it comes to her training regime, Chloe says she doesn’t have to force herself to work out as she always feels up for it – and says that it’s almost cured her battle with anxiety, which she previously suffered “all day, every day”. Fitness aside, Chloe’s goal this year is to find her forever home with her husband, former England rugby ace and I’m A Celeb star James Haskell. And she admits they’re hoping to try for a baby within the next couple of years. Here, the 32-year-old opens up about giving advice to her famous parents Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, her guilty pleasures and her third book, Transform Your Body With Weights…

I’d quite like to have two kids, but we won’t know until we start trying how likely it is and if we’ll be able to do it. Tell us about your new fitness book, Transform Your Body With Weights… It’s for beginners, intermediates and advanced. The differences between the three is that I want beginners to learn the exercises unweighted and get them right. I give intermediates quite a good weight-lifting plan they can stick to for a few months and advanced is a little bit more of a push in terms of your

Yeah, I had a bit of a backlash from my audience asking where my weight-lifting plan was! How to co-parent successfully

NEW YEAR

NEW YOU

Kieran Hayler has two children with his ex Katie Price, so he knows a thing or two about compromise

K

ieran Hayler split up with Katie Price in 2018, but with two children between them – Jett, six, and Bunny, five – they still remain in each other’s lives. So how does that work when there

are new partners on the scene? Kieran, 32, who dates Michelle Pentecost, shares 50/50 custody with Katie. Here, he gives his advice on how to keep the peace when co-parenting...

Be flexible... within reason

“I FaceTime every night I’m not with the kids. Obviously that’s to talk to Jett and Bunny, but it’s a good opportunity to get info from Kate about dates, times, or whatever else needs to be discussed. Otherwise it’s voice notes or texts and it’s very regular. Everything we talk about is to do with the kids. We always keep it on that level. I don’t need to know the ins and outs of her personal life and vice versa, so in a sense it’s a well-oiled business arrangement.”

Manage your cash “We pay our own separate ways when it comes to the children’s upkeep, which is unusual, as normally one parent pays the other support. But if it’s something like the school uniform or a school trip, which I think we should go halves on, I tend to pay the whole lot. I was bullied as a child and I want to make sure my kids are never in a situation where they don’t have the right uniform or miss out on trips. I don’t want them to be a target like I was.”

20

new Always be civil Include partners

“Despite the problems we’ve faced before, we always put on the best possible front when the kids are around. It’s not healthy for them to see us arguing so, despite our differences, we’ll always be civil with one another. “I couldn’t bear for my kids to witness animosity. No matter how we feel about each other, we stay friends for the sake of our children.”

“When you separate from someone and enter into a new relationship, it’s always difficult. Michelle is an incredible role model for Bunny and Jett and I think Kris [Katie’s on-off boyfriend] is a good guy, but it’s hard for them to understand that Katie and I have to stay in touch. “Sometimes the decisions we make aren’t necessarily the best for our romantic relationships, as it’s all about the children. But so long as I keep Michelle in the loop and communicate with her about it, she copes.”

Communication is key

“We have the children on a 50/50 basis, two days each on, two days off. It was important for me as a dad to have as much contact as possible with them after the separation and Katie agreed to that. Of course, with Katie’s lifestyle it means I end up having them so much more. Sometimes she has to work so it’ll mean I have to have them on a day that’s not scheduled. That’s fine – I’d drop anything for my kids – but she has to make sure she gives me some notice!”

Apprentice star Thomas Skinner gives us the lowdown on impressing the boss

H

e may not have won, but Thomas Skinner was undoubtedly the fan favourite of The Apprentice in 2019, thanks to his cheeky-chappy charm and boundless enthusiasm for every task. And it was clear Lord Sugar was fond of him too, firing him “with regret” and claiming he’d even take Tom, 28, into the trenches with him!

Although Tom’s departure was the saddest moment in the latest series, the entrepreneur had the last laugh, with his pillow and mattress company thriving as a result of his newfound fame. So who better to offer wise words on how to wow in the workplace? Here, Tom reveals how to land your dream job, win over bosses and make more money!

Get that promotion Nail that interview “Impressing in an interview is all about confidence. Don’t be too cocky, but do make sure people know you’re in the room. Shake their hand and look them straight in the eye. Make sure they know who you are. Fake it until you make it – even if you don’t feel confident, pretend. People have always responded well to me as they know what they see is what they get.”

“If people like you, they’ll work with you. I go out of my way to get on with people because I know if I gel with them they’ll be back for more business. At the end of the day you have to be a good guy. I’m never gonna work with someone I don’t like, it’s as simple as that, so to get ahead it’s simple – be nice, be good and be honest. Bosh!”

COMPILED BY: Sarah Morton PHOTOS: Ray Burmiston

Spruce up your CV

“ I’ve never actually had a CV because I’ve always worked for myself. So when I went on The Apprentice I just told them what I’d done and they liked it. But if I was recruiting someone, I’d want that CV to stand out. Don’t be shy about your achievements. Big yourself up and try to be a little bit different. Much like with an interview, you have to make sure they remember your name.”

Deal with difficult colleagues

“You’ve always got to know your worth. Once you’ve proven you can do the job and can do it well, you’ve met your targets, or you’ve gone above and beyond, you are well within your rights to ask for more money – and don’t be shy about it! But you know what? If they say no, that’s an incentive to work harder. There’s a fine line, though. If you haven’t proved yourself, you can’t be asking.”

Negotiate a pay rise

“I had a right time of it on the show dealing with Lottie Lion. She was bloody difficult. But you can only fall out with people so many times. It gets to the point where you have to let them make their own mistakes. Give them enough rope to hang themselves. I’ve had situations with colleagues before where they don’t listen to me, don’t take my advice, but they come back later and apologise, because they realised I was right all along.”

hat a difference a year makes. In November 2018, Vicky Pattison was mending a shattered heart after breaking up with her fiancé John Noble. Then, on 21 January, she was pictured kissing former TOWIE star Ercan Ramadan, 26, on a date night in east London. Three weeks later, Vicky, 32, revealed they were official and since then things have gone from strength to strength for the gorgeous couple. In August they moved into a two-bedroom London flat together. “This time last year everyone saw us PDAing in a doorway. Classy! You can take the bird out of Newcastle,” Vicky jokes as we chat about how different her life is a year on. “We’ll be in Dubai in January, a lot more classy!” Along with a successful year on a personal level, Vicky has also been busy with work. “I did Celebrity MasterChef, Coach Trip, my own show Vicky Pattison: The Break Up and worked with some lovely brands. I found my stride and my voice across social media. I’m a much happier bunny,” she tells us. Here, Vicky opens up about being a cougar, why she’s in no rush to get engaged and how Ercan is bringing out the best in her… Hi Vicky. What’s it like living with Ercan? It’s so nice. He’s not going anywhere any time soon. With an arse like that… Things seem so blissful between you, but do you ever argue? We’re like any normal couple. I’m not going to say we haven’t had cross words in the year we’ve been together, but it’s very minimal. He’s a really kind and measured person. He’s bringing out the best in me. If you’re with someone who’s very placid, you can’t row. It’s just like shouting at yourself! There’s a lot of love between us and a very relaxed vibe. Even if we do have a little bicker, I fall about laughing soon after, because he’s just got the cutest, cheekiest little face. But remember, we’re still in the honeymoon period! You did a fertility test on your TV show, which showed your eggs are healthy. Would you advise others to do it? After going through the process and speaking with a specialist, I would urge any woman in her thirties, who’s thinking about having kids and who isn’t in the position to have them in the next year or so, to just find out. It’s good to have some knowledge and understanding of what’s going on. You could

be worrying over nothing or you could take action immediately. It’s important to be taking positive steps to get to where you want to be eventually. Have you frozen your eggs yet? No, I’m looking to start the process. I have a contraceptive implant in my arm, so if I did go ahead I’d have to take that out. It’s going to take a long time. It’s not just a case of whipping the eggs out in my lunch break! The doctor mentioned drinking heavily could affect your egg count. Have you cut down? I have. I feel like I’ve grown up. As you get older, wild nights on the town and drinking Jägerbombs have been replaced with nights on the sofa watching Netflix and eating Haribos. But I have been more conscious since getting that information and also about eating well and exercising. I want to create a healthy environment for a child to grow up in. It means looking after myself more and watching what I put in my body. Tell us about working with Hartley’s 10 Cal Jelly… I feel so lucky to work with brands I’ve grown up with. Psychic Chris Riley tells new what the next 12 months have in store for some of our fave celebs

EX FACTOR “We will be seeing more of Cheryl Tweedy this year and, although she finds it hard to open up about her emotions and personal life, she will start to become more and more comfortable in her own skin. This year is a good one for Cheryl romance-wise and she may reunite with a past love and try to make a go of it again.”

RECONCILIATION “Katie “K i Price P i has h had h d a roughh 12 months, but 2020 looks set to be a year of freedom where she’ll have the chance to travel. Florida could offer a key opportunity. Katie will make progress in her love life, letting go of the past, but will she go on a romantic break to try to reconcile a relationship? Let’s see!”

BABY NO 5 “Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s relationship will continue to blossom this year. They will be talking about having another child around mid to late 2020 and there’s a strong possibility of this happening. However I feel this may be via surrogacy again.”

CAREER-MINDED “Mark Wright and Michelle Keegan have faced some difficulties, but they have a stable marriage and make a good team. Mark is very strong-willed and doesn’t give up easily and through 2020 he will be encouraging Michelle as she is offered a new acting opportunity on TV.”

DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS “Gemma C “G Collins lli will ill bbe more or lless ready to have a baby, but James Argent will be focusing on building other things in his life and career, which may bring disappointment for Gemma. The GC will be pursuing her singing and music in 2020 and may be seen on TV, perhaps competing in The X Factor: Celebrity.”

BABY GIRL “Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash have a very happy relationship, so there could be talk of another baby as they may start feeling broody around the time their son Rex turns one. Stacey’s a family woman and I feel she’d love to have a little girl in the future.”

BUSINESS BOOM “Victoria Beckham has a strong mind for business and 2020 is showing several opportunities for her to flourish, especially in creative areas. Both Posh and David are settled and content in life and will continue to enjoy all that it has to offer them.”

NEW HOME “There’s a potential move for Coleen Rooney over the next 12 months, but it may not go as planned. There could be another baby, too, but she will need support. She has talented children and one in particular will come out of his shell.

NEW LOVE “Louise Redknapp has taken a break from love, but 2020 is showing a good chance of her finding a partner she is fully content with. Louise may revisit one of her past career ventures. Also, expect more new music from her.”

MOVING FORWARD “Vicky Pattison will focus on herself and what she wants to achieve. A past love may return and apologise in the hope of reconciling, but Vicky has moved on with Ercan Ramadan and could even be contemplating marriage. But, around the middle of the year, romantic sparks could fly with someone new on a trip away.”

NEW YEAR, NEW START H Happy N New Y Year you llovely l llot! t! One of my big resolutions for 2020 is to try to give up smoking, but I just need to do it in my own time when I’m ready. What I know I can do is raise awareness for mental health issues. I’m working with the It’s OK campaign. We’ve got lots of celebs involved, we’re doing seminars up and down the UK and it’ll be huge. Improving mental wellbeing is a passion of mine. I can’t wait to tell you more when it’s up and running!

LITTLE VOICE

After seeing that she quit Love Island, I reached ry for out to Caroline Flack as I just felt so sorry her. Women are treated so differently to men in this industry and I just hope ITV have her back like they do Ant McPartlin’s. I love Ant and I’m thrilled for him and his recovery,, but I feel like the industry has treated eated Caroline very differently to the way it treated him and it’s wrong. I’m a survivor of domestic violence so I’m not condoning it, but we’ve all had heated moments with our partners and we all make mistakes. It feels very unfair what’s happened to her and I don’t think Love Island will be quite the same without her.

I’m sure you’ve seen stories about my Heidi taking part in The Voice Kids. I can’t say much as I don’t want to take anything away from her own achievements and I don’t want anything hindering her because of who I am. I can’t tell you if she got through or not, but I’m so proud of her. She’s following her dreams, she’s being brave and she’s been amazing. It was fantastic to see her audition but to find out exactly what happened, you’ll have to watch in August!

PANTO DAME

26

You all know how much I love doing my pantomime and this run in Sleeping Beauty has been fantastic as always. Don’t get me wrong, it’s bloody hard work, but I’m with a fabulous cast, incredible producers behind the scenes and the audiences have been brilliant. I can’t thank everyone enough for all the effort they’ve put into making this one a cracker. Just looking out at the kids’ faces when I’m on stage makes the hard work all worth it. And it’s still on until 12 January, so come down and check it out in Ilford!

DRAMA QUEEN Obviously I adore Katie Price, and I have a theory about why her reality show My Crazy Life has been renewed. People love watching drama! And the fact is there’s so much drama around her – it’s like watching a soap opera so people are intrigued. I’ll always be there for Kate, so I’ll be tuning in, but her life is all over the place at the minute. That said, I know the public are rooting for her to turn it around and there’s no question she’s great entertainment, so good luck to her!

Be organised “Know your income but, more importantly, know your outgoings. Don’t be an ostrich and stick your head in the sand – manage your finances, not the other way around. Look carefully at how you spend your money. Even the smallest changes can make a big difference overall.”

“I’d advise everyone to put money aside for savings. Whether it’s £5 or £100 a month, keep putting something aside. Even saving a small amount is worth it because small amounts lead to bigger amounts. All those coffees you don’t buy could pay for a slap-up meal instead, or saving for something you really need on a rainy day. “Even if you only have £5 a month to save, go risk free by investing in Premium Bonds or National Savings. he Greatest Dancer was one of our favourite new shows of 2019, so we can’t wait to arrive at London’s swanky Soho Hotel to sit down with the dance captains and get a sneak peek at the new series. We’re pleased to report the first episode did not disappoint, and neither did the arrival of the four perfectly polished dance captains in the flesh – Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse, 29, singer Cheryl Tweedy, 36, former Glee star Matthew Morrison, 41, and, new to this series, RuPaul’s Drag Race choreographer Todrick Hall, 34. Super busy Oti, still competing on Strictly when we meet, has to dash off to rehearsals after we watch the first episode, but gives us her thoughts before she legs it. “The only thing I was thinking is, ‘What an honour to work with an amazing cast!’ I get to work with them and that’s my job. I feel like the luckiest person,” she said of the hopefuls. The first round of auditions sees dancers of all ages and from all genres perform on stage behind a mirror before learning whether at least 75 per cent of the audience want to send them through to the next round. If they don’t, the mirror won’t turn and the act won’t even get to speak to the dance captains. Brutal!

Contestants trying to impress the dance captains

28

In an exciting twist, each week a randomly selected dance captain gets to choose their Greatest Dancer of the day who is then catapulted through to the live shows and on to their team. Here, the captains talk fierce rivalry, dirty tactics and belly laughs…

Hi guys! Congratulations on series two. What makes this show stand out from other dance shows such as Strictly? Cheryl: Strictly is Latin and ballroom and our show is about variety, from tiny kids to 98-yearolds. Also the genres, the fact the audience get to choose whether or not they go through the audition process – I just feel warm and happy when I watch it back and I was part of it. It’s a feelgood Saturday night show everyone should sit down with their families to watch. The first episode is emotional and there are a lot of tears. What was it like watching it back? Matthew: It’s so funny watching it, because you see all these performances that you saw on that day and you get the same emotions and you’re like, “I remember how I felt in that moment.” And it still rings true, the show is so authentic that way. Do you all get competitive? Cheryl: There were some rows. Matthew: When we get to the final audition, there was a moment where we all confer with each other. Cheryl: You were very sure this year, weren’t you? Matthew: I learned a lot from you last year. Todrick: It was an odd negotiation process

The new line-up

for sure. Oti was stealing all the headshots. Cheryl: She tries to hide people so you forget about them. She’s a dirty player. Matthew: You get a little dirty, too. I have to say. You were just grabbing them. Cheryl: I was just honest, “I want him, I want her. Don’t touch them, I want them!” Matthew: You’re not honest. You play some games like, “I want this one so bad.” But you actually don’t… Cheryl: He [points to Todrick] told me to do that! Todrick: Do I look like someone who would play those types of games? Cheryl, what was it like having Todrick next to you on the panel? Hilarious. I got the front row seat and they couldn’t fit [all the laughs] in the one hour show. I had belly laughs all the way through. Did you get a lot of ribbing for your moustache, Matthew? I was filming a show called American Horror Story and it was part of my character. I’m doing something else right now, so I will be growing it back to keep the continuity back for the live shows… No I won’t.

What was it like to pick the Greatest Dancer of the day? Cheryl: I didn’t know who I was going to pick. When my name came up I was like, “Shit!” to be honest. Oti went into full meltdown! Matthew: Cheryl definitely had it the hardest, because she was first. And it was actually a lesson to all of us what not to do. It was really challenging. Todrick: It was very stressful. I was on a reality competition show [American Idol in 2009], so I think that I have a little PTSD when I’m about to choose someone and I realise what a life-changing experience it is. But in comparison to Oti – she was acting like Mufasa had just died, twice. She was going through it! Todrick, did you use your experience on American Idol to influence how you are as a judge? Absolutely. In this day and age there are so many things you can take from the show. As we’ve seen from shows like American Idol or The X Factor, the people who win the show aren’t necessarily always the people who make the biggest splash. I think as dance captains, the best thing we can

do is give everyone the tools to ise how be successful and to realise much of a star they are, no matterr w. what happens in the show. Some of you have been on n reality shows yourselves.. How do the contestants cope with rejection? Cheryl: One of the beautiful ul things about this show is nobody does feel rejected.. It’s a different process to the he one I went through. Dancers ers are already competing in the he he dance world. They know the ut drill, they put themselves out cers there for that reason. Dancers ey’re in particular, that’s what they’re ting. doing all the time – competing. As performers yourselves, do you have any rituals before e you go on stage? Cheryl: I can’t do with ore emotional, big-up talks before I go on. I like to be focused and quiet. EY GEMMA MCCARTNEY The Greatest Dancer launches on 4 January, 7pm, on BBC1

‘WE’RE ALL COMPETITIVE!’ The show’s presenters Alesha Dixon, T 41 41, and Diversity star Jordan Banjo, 27, on weird rituals and egos Hi guys! Could it be any more awkward than when the mirrors don’t open for the dancers? Jordan: Yeah, it’s not that awkward for us because we’re in front of it and they stay behind it and it’s all good. But you do feel for them. The difference with this show is that everyone who comes on The Greatest Dancer genuinely believes they’ve got a shot at getting that mirror opened. They don’t just come for a day out. Alesha, run us through the format... After the initial stages, we go to the live challenge shows. They get three acts each and it’s tough. These guys have become more competitive. Since Todrick’s come along, they’ve upped their

competitive spirit in a great way. There’s a great chemistry between them and they love and support one another and they all want to win, which makes it entertaining for us. Who wants to win the most out of the dance captains? Alesha: All of them. Everyone wants to win but, at the same time, they want to make sure that they get the best out of their act. Jordan, last season you had an operation and couldn’t dance. What about this series? Yeah, definitely. It was weird last time being involved in a show that celebrates so much dance and seeing all these guys up there and not being able to do anything. This time I’m definitely going to dance and hopefully bring my boys from Diversity and do something special.

‘I want to feel ’ ! r e v e r o f d o o g s i th Love Island’s Alexandra Cane opens up about her body and mind transformation and why she’s not looking for a man

A

PHOTOS: Shutterstock

lexandra Cane admits she’s struggled with her mental health since appearing on Love Island in 2018. So six months ago, in a bid to improve both her mind and body, the 28-year-old embarked on a fitness journey that consisted of HIIT workouts and cutting back on treats, such as chocolate. The former make-up artist has lost 2st and dropped two dress sizes and says she feels her best ever. Now, wanting to inspire other women with her improved sense of confidence, Alex has devised The Happy Body Plan, an app packed with workouts and motivational blogs. Here, the star, who was coupled up with Dr Alex George in the villa and who previously dated estate agent Adam Theobald, tells us she’s now single and gushes about her newfound body confidence and the fact that she’s had to buy a whole new wardrobe…

32

Hi Alex. You look amazing! Tell us how you’ve done it… HIIT training. I tried going to the gym so many times, but it was months of membership fees going down the drain and not really having a clue what I was doing. So when I met my trainer I started doing interval training – short bursts of exercise to spike my metabolism and get my heart rate up. It’s as effective as walking on a treadmill for two hours. I’ve been so busy since I left the villa in 2018 that I needed something not too time-consuming, but still giving the benefits. I do it for

my mental state as well. I really lost myself earlier last year and I couldn’t get myself out of the rut. Why did you feel like that? It was a combination of things. When you’re projected into the limelight after a show like Love Island it’s such a fantastic opportunity, but it can be really overwhelming. Your schedule is crazy. Then there are comments made about you and so many eyes watching you when you’re walking down the street. You start thinking, “Is anybody trying to take a picture of me from a bad angle?” You end up a bit paranoid. And I had a few family health scares. I got into a place where I just wasn’t happy. I knew I had to get out of it and that’s why I got into exercising. It’s been amazing. Did you consider therapy? I’ve never been the sort of person to do that, because I think the power is in ourselves. You need that little bit of self-belief. My trainer has motivated me so

With Dr Alex on Love Island

much. For me, exercise is the best form of therapy. How do you feel now? Genuinely, hand on my heart, I can say I feel the best I’ve ever felt in my life. I walk down the street with a spring in my step and I see the beauty in everything. I’m so happy all the time and I’ve got so much energy. I wake up in the morning before my alarm. I just feel so energised and my brain is so clear. I used to find it hard to sleep and now I sleep well at night. My anxiety has disappeared and it’s such a beautiful feeling. I want to put it in a bottle and share it with everyone! Did you ever feel like giving up with your regime? So many times. It’s been a real struggle. I was in a really bad place when I first started doing the HIIT sessions and I felt like quitting so many times. It was quite daunting and I suffered some panic attacks during training. But I pushed myself

through that and got myself back every day. Now I’m so much fitter and stronger and I’m gobsmacked by how far I’ve come. You’ve included your workouts on the Happy Body Plan app, but what about nutrition advice? The meal plan is the one I’ve followed. You can have a little bit of what you want, but it’s about understanding calories, intake and portion control. Do you have cheat meals? Oh, 100 per cent. I love chocolate, desserts and ice cream, but I have them in moderation. That’s the key. You’ve lost 2st, but what other changes have you noticed about yourself? I’ve tried not to look at the scales too much because I don’t want to become obsessive. I’m very happy at 9st as I’ve still got my curves. But some of the outfits I wore on holiday this year actually fell down – that’s pretty crazy. I’ve thrown out three bags of clothes and I’m spending so much buying a new wardrobe. Does that make you feel good? In the past I definitely had some negative comments about my body. Unfortunately, despite the positive comments, we do hold on to the criticism over the positives. I got called a whale that had been harpooned and that made me really upset, so finding a way to make myself feel better was important. I want to feel this good for the rest of my life. What’s your favourite part of your body? My arms. I used to really dislike them, but I’ve fallen in love with them now. My heart-shaped face

‘Love isn’t on my agenda right now’

She’s lost 2st in six months

has come back, too. It’s nice to feel like a teenage version of me! Are you dating at the moment? I’m not in a relationship. I needed to take some time out to focus on myself. I’m an all or nothing person and my mental health had to take priority. So love isn’t even on my agenda right now. I’m in such a good place and no one is going to come in and mess up my aura and energy! What advice would you give the new batch of Love Islanders? Take every day as it comes and embrace every opportunity that comes from it. If you make every opportunity the best possible that you can, it will be a great time for you. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me and I hope others can share the same experience. Find your inner NEW YEAR happiness NEW YOU This Morning’s resident agony aunt and uncle Eva and Nik Speakman reveal how to bring more joy into your life

T

he new year is the best time to make a fresh start if you’ve been experiencing negative feelings. But how do you focus

Practise gratitude Eva: “Each morning, set your alarm 10 minutes early, press the snooze button and practise gratitude by thinking about all the things or people you are grateful for – things like your health, your family, your friends. You can’t foresee what the day is going to throw at you, but you can at least start your day from an elevated position.”

Choose your circle wisely

COMPILED BY: Hamaiz Iqbal PHOTOS: Getty

Eva: “Look closely at the people who you hang around with. We’re very influenced by people who are in our social groups. Look at your friendship circles because negativity is contagious. You should try to keep away from people who aren’t positive.”

Leave your comfort zone Eva: “Fear of the unknown is what makes us anxious, stressed and nervous. Imagine yourself taking on a new challenge really well, almost as if it’s a rehearsal. Once you actually get round to doing it, it will feel like second nature.”

on making yourself feel more positive? Here, This Morning lifestyle gurus Nik and Eva Speakman share their top tips on how to get happy…

Get some fresh air Nik: “Go outside and take some time out, so you’re in a different environment. These days a lot of people have lunch at their desk or while they’re working, but actually get up, go outside and get some fresh air. Going out at midday when it’s brightest gives you the perfect break.”

Change how you communicate Eva: “If someone asks how you’re doing, instead of saying, ‘Yeah, not bad’, even if that’s all you’re feeling, try changing your reply to, ‘I’m amazing!’ or ‘I’m brilliant!’ Just saying those words will start to lift your mood because your words dictate everything around you, including your feelings.”

Take a detox from Make small changes social media Nik: “A lot of people fall into the trap of waking up, picking up their phone and looking at Instagram or Twitter. But not opening up anything on social media for a few hours will make a massive difference to your mood. We spend too much time looking at our phones or computers and deciding whether to like this or that. But we should get things straight in our own lives before reacting to others.”

Nik: “If you don’t plan your life, you’ll become a part of somebody else’s plans and that means you’re not fulfilling what you really want from your life. Make a new year’s resolution to do one new thing a month, as opposed to doing lots of new things in one go. If you aim for smaller changes, you’ll succeed. If you have one massive resolution, as soon as it looks like you’re not going to make it, you’ll stop pursuing it and give up.”

Start a good news journal Eva: “Document any good news by writing it down in a journal. It could be something that’s made you laugh, something you bought, or something you thought was amazing. What you’re actually doing is training yourself to look out for positive things.”

‘Gemma Collins will go down in history!’ Dancing On Ice hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield open up about past contestants and reveal who they’re most looking forward to watching this year

F

rom Todd Carty’s hilarious stumble to Gemma Collins’ epic fall, Dancing On Ice has created a lot of iconic TV moments. In 2020, it’s making history by having the first ever same-sex partnership – and Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield say they’re extremely proud to be part of it. The duo, who first presented the show together 13 years ago, also admit they think it is so successful because it has the perfect mixture of humour, glamour and danger. “You’re constantly thinking, ‘Wow – someone could hurt themselves here and it’s live!’” says Phil. “So that’s why it worked so perfectly because we think at the same speed, we’ve got the same sense of humour.” And Holly agrees, “January is a bit cold and rubbish. Suddenly, you’ve got this explosion of colour, entertainment, glamour, glitz and ice. I think it comes at a really good time of year.” Here, Holly, 38, and Phil, 57, reminisce about their first live show, reveal what music they’d skate to if they took to the ice, and tell us why John Barrowman will make a great judge…

36

Hi guys! Did you ever think the show would come this far when you first presented it? Holly: For me, Dancing On Ice was the first grown-up telly I had ever done. Even if I had dreamed the best possible outcome, I would never have expected this. Phil: The success of the show was a surprise for us. When it first started it was such a big and bold thing – I don’t think anyone quite knew what to expect. That first show was so huge. We were terrified! Have you got any standout memories from your first live show? Holly: It was such a blur. It was primetime and I was stood next to Phillip Schofield! It

was terrifying. I can’t remember any of the show apart from getting through it. It was about getting through the links on autocue without messing up. It could have been so catastrophically bad. To watch it now, I’d probably cringe the whole way through it. Phil: Any show evolves and looks change. I can’t even remember what we looked like. Holly: I can remember exactly what I was wearing. I was wearing a pair of shoes that were black satin and they had crystals all over them. I had seen Emma Bunton wearing them once and I’d said I wanted those shoes. What was your favourite moment from last year’s series? Phil: I think it’s got to be the wonder of Gemma Collins. She gave more than we possibly imagined she could have. It was exciting to have Gemma on the show – she was good fun. Holly: And also, we don’t want anyone to get hurt, but that fall is replayed over and over again. It’s going to be in every montage for the rest of time now.

Dance partners Ian H Watkins and Matt

Phil: She could have easily knocked her teeth out or broken her nose! That would have been absolutely horrific. But she’s laughed about it as well. It sits in along with the moments like when Todd Carty skated out and was pushed back on. There are a number of moments in DOI history and Gemma has now entered the hall of fame. Who are you most intrigued to see this year? Holly: I think Matt Evers and H because that is groundbreaking. A primetime show has a same-sex couple skating together and why shouldn’t they? It should have been happening a long time ago. For that reason, I’m very proud of Dancing On Ice. What do you think new judge John Barrowman will bring to the show? Phil: He is literally fabulous! He used to be a guest on Going Live! when I was doing Saturday morning telly, so I’ve known him for years. He is the all-round showman. Holly: I love him! I love working with him and I love hanging out with him. He’s obviously really good fun but he knows his stuff. This is an industry he’s worked in for a long time – not skating specifically but entertainment, showbiz, performing, dancing and putting on a show. He’s going to be brilliant. If you were to take to the ice, what would you skate to? Holly: Frozen. Coming out like Elsa. Not that I have thought about this! I’d love to do the training but, truthfully, the thing that stops me is that I would be so nervous to do it in front of so many people, which is mad when I can stand there in front of people and talk. But it’s a completely different skill and the ice has its own life – you can’t control it. Phil: As this is hypothetical, I would skate out to The Greatest Showman. I would sing it as well! I would be the first person to sing it as I was skating it. Holly: I want this to happen now.

Gemma’s epic tumble

Phil: It isn’t ever going to happen, but in my head that is how I would triumph. Which routine from throughout the years has stuck in your minds? Phil: Suzanne Shaw flying was amazing. Holly: That’s exactly what I was going to say! And Hayley Tamaddon doing Jai Ho. What do you think is the scariest aspect of doing this show? Phil: For a period I was presenting the show with Christine Lampard. At the end, we both agreed we would learn to skate. I thought we did quite well, but when I watched it back I could not have been going any slower. It was singularly unimpressive. So any one of those skaters who comes out and skates the way they do, in my eyes, because I’ve tried it, is impressive. Are you both adrenaline junkies? Phil: I am, big time! Holly: I’m really not. I’ve done bungee jumping and a skydive, but nowadays I’m not interested in anything like that. I like skiing but not fast. Phillip: I’m not as scared as I was when I was younger. I sort of don’t care now, let me have a go! Why do you think DOI is so successful? Holly: It’s just spectacular. It’s got so many different elements to it. It’s got the danger and it looks beautiful. Phil: Also, we pulled the show forward. It used to be on a bit later. Families can now sit down and watch it and that’s made a big difference. You’ve got people who are inspired to learn how to skate. Rinks up and down the country are saying they’ve run out of space because everyone is coming in and having a go. So I love the fact that every year we encourage people to take it up. Who knows, one day we might find out that we’ve inspired TURN a future Olympian! The good thing is, no one expects me to be a dancer, so I’m just going to do it with a smile and enjoy it without any pressure. Stacey’s stepmum is actually a skate teacher. These things fall in my lap sometimes. Are you scared about falling over during the live shows? No, I’ve come to terms with it already. I just don’t know whether to style it out or what.

I fell the other day and I literally pulled every single person down to the floor with me! How good are you at taking criticism? I’ve taken it quite a lot over my life. It’s like water off a duck’s back, so I’m alright with a bit of criticism. I think it’s good for you. Is Stacey worried about the Dancing On Ice curse? Not really. No one’s showed any interest in me! I don’t think she’s got anything to worry about. We’ll leave that to Perri! Stacey said she had to Photoshop you into the family Christmas card because you’ve been so busy… She did get a bit of the hump but she understands that it’s really tough and if I don’t do it properly I’ll kill myself. Are you still pulling your weight at home with the night feeds? Of course. I do about 70 per cent of the night feeds! [Laughs] No, we share them.

ow’s training going with Alex Demetriou? We have a really good relationship. We have such a laugh and we take the piss out of each other, but we still get the work done. If I come to rehearsals in a mood, he’ll just be like, “Shut up!” I give it back to him, though. We bicker, but we have a laugh. How are you feeling g about the lifts? I trust Alexx 100 per cent. The pins and stuff haven’t lifts and spins been scaring ing me. I’ve been fine with all of that. It’s the steps I’m struggling with. ervous about Are you nervous performing g live? It’s terrifying! ng! I keep forgetting all the steps. I go into rehearsals every day and I mess it up every ot a performer. I’ve time. I’m not never done e anything like this in my life, so it’s petrifying. Are you worried orried about getting rom the judges? criticism from I want to know what I’m not doing use it will make me right because er for the following work harder week. But if I disagree, I’m not e afraid to say so. going to be Has Curtis given you any ps? dancing tips? No, I think it’s very different on She trusts Alex with the lifts

the ice. Training is already hard enough without going home and practising in the evenings. You want to take your mind off it when you go home. Do you feel any pressure after fellow Islander Wes Nelson did so well last year? Yes! He was incredible. But I haven’t asked for any advice – I’m just going to go out and do the best I can. Do you think you can get the public behind you? It’s hard for me because in Love Island d it was all about my mouth – that’s what got me to the final. On this show you’re not talking, you just keep your mouth shut and smile.

‘IT’S REALLY INTENSE’ Caprice Bourret, 48, says skating for the first time has been hard

H

ow are you finding the experience so far? There’s so much training! When I’m skating, I feel like my legs aren’t straight enough, my toes aren’t pointed and my arms are all over the place. I’ve never skated before and we’re doing some crazy

stuff. It’s really intense training. Skating is hard. Has it affected your body? Right after training, I go into the [cryotherapy] freezer in minus 110 degrees for three minutes – it really works! You feel your body totally dying and shutting down and then you come out and the bruises are gone in two days. It heals me and it makes me sleep better. I don’t think I’d survive without it. Are your sons excited that you’re doing the show? So excited! They want to go on the ice and skate Doing “crazy stuff” with me but I’m with Hamish Gaman like, “Not quite yet, guys!”

‘I WANT TO BRING SOMETHING FRESH’ Diversity star Perri Kiely, 24, will bring his dance skills to the ice

D

o you think your dancing skills will give you an advantage? I thought some things would play to my advantage, but my trainer said to me, “I would rather work with someone who has never skated or done anything like this before.” Everything I think I’m doing right, I’m not. It hinders me. Can we expect backflips on ice? I really want to. Before I started I was like, “You know what, I’m going to push it and see what I can do.” But when I turned up on the first day, I was like, “I don’t think I can push it!” But honestly, I really do want to switch it up a bit and bring something fresh. Are you worried about injuries? I am. I don’t want to push it too much, but there’s no knowing when you’re going to fall. There’s sessions where you go in and you’re like, “I’ve got this!” And then 10 minutes later you stack it.

Do you think judge Ashley Banjo will go easy on you? There no chance he’s going to go easy on me. I’ve been dancing with him for the past 12 years, so if there’s something out of place, he’ll tell me. He knows what I’m capable of. He’s about to have his second baby, so maybe I’ll be like, “I’ll babysit if you give me a high score!” You’ve also been doing the Diversity tour – has it been full on? It’s been tough. All my training sessions end up being at 5am and then I go and do the show. I’m just trying to fit it in. I’m just getting on with it at the moment, but it’s been nonstop. I didn’t think I’d be that busy, to be honest. There’s so much to do, but I’m taking it a step at a time.

Celebrity personal trainer Jessie Pavelka from TV’s Obese: A Year To Save My Life shares his wisdom

F

eeling the post-festive bloat? Want to get in shape and give your diet a healthy makeover? It can be difficult to know where to start, but trainer to the stars Jessie Pavelka says improving your lifestyle is a lot easier if you follow a few simple guidelines…

Get your five a day First steps

“The first thing to do when taking on any challenge is to become aware of what your world is. How do you react if you’re feeling overwhelmed? Pay attention to that. “If you reach for chocolate when you’re stressed, go for a walk instead, do some deep breathing or talk to someone who can help you stay on the right track. This brings consistency in changing habits for the long term.”

40

“Fill your fridge with lots of fruits and vegetables with different colours and textures. We need vitamins and nutrients from quality sources, not from pills and potions. Most of us are living in a high-stress survival state, burning up our vitamin and mineral stores. Fruit and vegetables help keep your body and mind in a more efficient and peaceful state.”

Cheat meals are a myth “I don’t like the word ‘cheat’. If you want to give yourself a treat or enjoy different types of food, then go for it. These days, most restaurants have healthy options – even fast food chains.

“I’m more concerned on social occasions if someone is drinking. If the next day’s hangover means you eat food that’s unhealthy or makes you feel uncomfortable in your own skin, then address that.”

Ditch the scales Exercise doesn’t cancel calories “Yes, you can allow yourself a burger after a good workout if you’ve been eating healthily the rest of the week, but you don’t do one to get away with the other. Don’t sabotage all your hard work by eating junk food.”

“People who use scales are often left wanting more. What happens when you get to your ideal weight? People who rely on scales often put weight on so they can chase that journey again. “Instead, focus on how it feels when you do an extra rep or an extra minute on the treadmill, so you can look at these moments as a contributor to the value of your journey.”

Get lifting “It’s not true resistance training makes you bulk up or turns you into a bodybuilder. Lifting weights is a good way to increase bone density to combat osteoporosis and it promotes lean muscle mass. “Weights are good and cardio is great. When it comes to mental health, cardio workouts such as HIIT training, running and cycling are like meditation in motion.”

Jessie has launched a training programme app that takes you on a journey of incremental change through four elements – Eat, Sweat, Think and Connect. To find out more, visit pavelka.co.uk/JP4

‘I’d date absolutely anyone!’ D

avid McIntosh, aka Tornado in Gladiators, hit the headlines with his now infamous relationship with Kelly Brook, which ended on a sour note five years ago. Since their break-up, he’s stayed largely out of the limelight, but returned to our screens in 2017 for ill-fated reality show Bromans. Now David, 34, is back, and while questions about his “toxic” relationship with Kelly are off-limits, the dad-of-one tells us he’s very much single and would love to have a lady by his side. Here, he discusses his newfound path in life and why he now prefers his mind over his body…

Hi David. What’s the biggest misconception about you? People think, “He’s just a model, he’s a womaniser, he’s not smart, he’s not clever.” But that’s not true because I put my mind and body through tests no one knows about.

With his ex Kelly Brook

You previously slammed the show as “trashy”… I did, but I was judging it by the people I’d seen on there and I stand by those statements. The next series could be full of fabulous, delightful people!

Such as your pal Calum Best! It must be full of extremely talented gentlemen and luscious ladies, then!

Are you single?

Are you vain?

I am, but I’m looking for love.

I love myself and you’ve got to love yourself. Other people like seeing pictures of me, so why not help put smiles on their faces? [Laughs]

Are your bad boy days behind you?

What’s your favourite part of your body? I’ve got a stern jawline, but it’s got to be my mind. Without it, you’re nothing. Abs are a close second!

w o n d e v r e s e r e r o ‘I’m m ’I ve got a girlfriend!’ The Voice UK coach Olly Murs on finding love and feeling fit again

W

e can barely believe it’s the ninth series of The Voice UK. And this time, the show has US star Meghan Trainor on the coaching panel. Megs joins veterans will.i.am, Tom Jones and Olly Murs – and host Emma Willis – as they sit down with new to discuss scouting for fresh talent. First up, we chat to Olly, 35, about his girlfriend Amelia Tank, the audition songs he hates to hear and why he struggles to make it down the stairs after his recent knee op… Hi Olly! What’s the talent been like this year? Incredible. Every year, you always have that little apprehensive feeling of, “Is the talent going to be as good as last year? Is it going to be as fun?” But every year, the talent has been fantastic. How is your team shaping up? The blind auditions went very quickly for me. It was my first time back at work after my knee

Coaches Olly, Tom, Meghan and will.i.am

surgery. And then we went back to the battles recently, that’s when I went, “Oh my God!” because f**k me, the talent is great. That’s when I started to look at my team in a different way, sizing them up against everyone else. Are there any audition songs you’re sick of hearing? Bridge Over Troubled Water. It’s one of those songs that has been sung so much. Do you have a mental checklist when you’re listening to someone’s voice? It’s really hard because if you’re

not in the chair and you’re at home – we all see through our eyes what we want to see. You think, “This person is amazing. Why is Tom not pressing his button?” But when you’re actually sat there… I don’t think there is a criteria as such, it doesn’t have to be perfection, because we’re coaches and we want to make them better. How’s your recovery going after your knee surgery in June? When I came back for The Voice, it was four months after surgery. I was literally walking down the

‘THE BOYS GET COCKY!’ Emma Willis, 43, on girl power and supporting the families…

Hi Emma! How hard is it with the family when no one turns round? Really horrible. But most of them deal with it. The initial reaction is quite hard and then we take a little bit of time and give cuddles. Do you ever want to have a go at the judges? No! But there have been points where I have just gone, “What the f**k are they doing? Can they not hear what I can hear?” But I don’t have their proper

musical ears. They know what they’re doing and I have to remember that I’m not in that chair. Nor can I sing! If you auditioned, which coach would you pick? Meghan. I always pick the female who’s in that chair. They get cocky, those boys! Would you like another female coach on the panel? Yes, that would be lovely. But I also think the people who are in those chairs, they all deserve to be in those chairs. I think it would be great if it was even.

stairs in agony. It wasn’t good for me. But the training is going well, physiotherapy is going well. I’ve got another six months of rehab and I should be alright. It’s weird because me and Tom have both gone for big operations over the past couple of years. He had his hip done and I had my knee done. We’re all falling apart here! Tom’s nearly 80! Are you hoping to be as popular as he is with the ladies when you’re approaching his age? One hundred per cent. I’ll say it again, if I’m sat here when I’m 80 having the same career that Tom’s having, I’ll be over the moon, because he’s an inspiration. There aren’t many artists who can sit here and say, “I’ve had a song in every decade of the last 60 years and I’m still doing albums, still touring.” It’s incredible. He’s still at the top of his game! We love your new hair. Do blondes have more fun? I’d like to say they do, but I’ve got a girlfriend now so I’m happy to be a little bit reserved.

INTERVIEWS

‘I’M ALREADY WINNING!’ US pop star Meghan Trainor, 25, on being competitive and her love of British shopping… Hi Meghan! As the newbie, how badly do you want to win? So bad! I’m very competitive. When you’re new, you’re like, “Oh no, I don’t have as good a chance as the legends,” but I think I’m already winning! I’ve got this one contestant and I’m going to hang on to her forever. Was it an easy yes when you were approached for the show? It wasn’t even a yes from me – I had to audition! My entire team and my agents and my family, they’ve known this has been a bucket list moment for me. I said, “One day I’m going to be in the red chair!” We videotaped the moment I got to sit in it for the first time and I was crying. This is everything. How are you settling into British life? Have you had a cheeky Nando’s yet? Oh, yes. That was the first thing we ate when we got back. It’s so fun here and I love the shopping. I love Harrods and Harvey Nichols.

Will.i.am, 44, opens up about the show’s newest coach and why it pays to be determined…

‘ I’LL GET PISSED ON MY 80TH!’ Coach and Welsh legend Tom Jones, 79, on birthday plans and the importance of a strong voice… Hi Tom! How’s your team looking? Strong. I think I’ve got a very strong team. What are you looking for when you’re listening to someone’s voice? To feel the person coming through. Some singers put on a front and think they should sound like this or that, but it doesn’t sound natural.

Does that make a big difference? When somebody does sound natural you can feel it come through and they don’t sound like the person who did it before. They have their own thing on it. Sometimes somebody comes up and does a great performance, but it’s got to be in the voice as you can’t see them. How will you be celebrating your 80th birthday next year? I’ll get pissed, actually.

Hi Will! How does it feel to have a new coach beside you? It feels awesome. If I didn’t know Meghan I would have been uncomfortable, but I know how talented Meghan is and what her true gift is in terms of a composer. That attribute she brings to the contestants is priceless, because there aren’t that many awesome female singers and composers in our industry. How would you describe yourself as a coach? I ask, “What is it you’re trying to accomplish? Let’s try to find who you are.” I try to make the singer feel as comfortable in their own skin as possible, and then when they leave The Voice they have this “f**k that shit” mentality, which is, “I’m not going to wait for anybody to hand me my career. I’m going to knock that wall down, get over it or around it.” That’s the only way to make it.

The Voice UK starts Saturday 4 January at 8.30pm on ITV

Off the back of hosting Miss World 2019, which was seen by around two billion people, my biggest audience to date, I’ve had some amazing offers come in – everything from presenting to performing. I’d love to host some of TV’s big shows. There’s also talk of me doing more stuff with Thriller: Live, but I’m not sure what I’ll do. I’m already getting booked up for different projects, so I want to make sure I’m saying yes to the right things. But all of this isn’t possible without everyone’s support and I’m forever grateful.

Taylor Swift is set to make her Glastonbury festival debut this summer, joining the likes of Saturday night headliner Sir Paul McCartney and Diana Ross, who will play the legends slot on the Sunday afternoon. Everyone would love to headline Glastonbury as it’s the holy grail of festivals, but I’ve never actually been. I have performed at V Festival and that was amazing, so it’s close, I guess?

I have to swap hands if I’m texting a lot or taking videos because it aches after a while. I think it’s because we’re the first generation using phones so much that our hands aren’t used to being in those positions.

I know we all do it every year, but there’s one resolution I would really like to stick to in 2020 and that’s to make baby steps towards going greener. My plan is to turn all my cars to electric by the end of next year. Now that’s not me preaching because I’ve still got a carbon

footprint. I admit I still fly on planes, but at least I’m doing my bit to try to get closer to being green. Looking at the year ahead, I can’t say there’s anything I honestly need, but speaking as a parent I would love for Junior to do well in his GCSEs and for Bista not to turn 13 – a dad can only hope!

‘I lost 10st to help my autistic son’

Jamie certainly didn’t part of a packet of biscuits, I told myself seem bothered. “I love you no matter what,” I deserved it. he would say. But as I adjusted to life with an autistic son, I found myself turning to sweet snacks and treats more than ever. Finding out the best way to deal with Jake’s moods as he grew into his personality was a learning curve, as was knowing when to respect his personal space.

Then, when Jake was six, our family of three became a family of four when baby number two, little Evie, now eight, arrived. Being a full-time mum to two children, I found myself busier than ever and once again I turned to food to deal with the stress. Opting for quick and easy meals I could grab on the go became normal for me and eventually it started to catch up. “What’s wrong, Mum?” Jake, then 11, asked as I struggled to heave myself off the couch. “Oh, nothing,” I replied. “It’s just Mum’s joints. They’ve been rather stiff lately.” I said “lately”, but it had been going on for a long time now. In fact, I was struggling to do a lot of things I used to find easy, such as climbing the stairs and taking the kids to school. I generally felt unwell. I knew deep down it was because of my weight, but I kept ignoring it.

HEAVIER THAN EVER By 2016, I was squeezing into a dress size 24. I didn’t dare weigh myself, but I knew I was the heaviest I’d ever been. I still did nothing about it, though. Then, one day that June I was in the local shopping precinct when a young man handing out flyers for a gym stopped me and asked if I’d ever thought of joining. “I’m not sure I’m a gym kind of lady,” I told him, feeling my cheeks flush. “Well you won’t know until you try,” he smiled, offering me a free day’s membership. As I slipped the voucher into my purse, I vowed to give it a shot. Even if it was just the once.

REAL LIFE

Sue and Jamie with Jake and Evie

Before I knew it, I was becoming quite the gym bunny, working out three times a week with a personal trainer. I was doing circuit training and HIIT one day, weightlifting the next. I felt the best I had in ages and the hard work started to show almost immediately. “I can’t believe it,” I beamed as I slipped into my old size 16 jeans, a year into my fitness regime. “I haven’t fitted into these in God knows how long.”

DIET OVERHAUL

The same week, steeling myself for what was to come, I stepped through the doors of my local Total Fitness gym. As I walked out of the changing room I felt like the biggest person in the place. In fact, I’d have said I was the biggest by at least 5st. There were some scales on the gym floor and I tentatively stood on them. Twenty stone flashed up. I couldn’t believe it. But seeing those numbers was the push I needed. As I nervously walked around the complicated looking machinery, a gym assistant smiled at me. “Don’t worry,” she said. “Everyone is a little shy at first.” “Is it that obvious?” I laughed. “Why don’t you start with some light cardio… the treadmill or bike?” Taking her advice, I hopped on a treadmill and worked up a sweat at a quick pace. After 20 minutes, I jumped on a bike and before I knew it, I was being shown how to use the weight machines, too. I stayed in the gym for over an hour and I couldn’t believe it – I actually felt good!

And it wasn’t just working up a sweat at the gym that saw my waist size shrink. I also overhauled my diet. Porridge to start my day, steamed fish with veggies for lunch and grilled chicken with brown rice for dinner soon became my staples. I even kicked my biscuit addiction, opting for rice cakes with peanut butter or a filling Sue weighed protein bar instead. 20st when Three years on, I’m down to she joined the gym 10st and a size 12. Whenever I bump into old friends, I always hear the same thing – “You’re unrecognisable.” I can’t deny that it feels great and I’m proud of myself. Losing the weight has given me my life back. ‘I’ve given up on body confidence’ Hollyoaks’ Jessica Fox, 36, says she could never ditch cheese and chocolate and prefers horse riding to the treadmill HEIGHT 5FT 1IN DRESS SIZE 8-10 Are you body confident?

What’s your favourite takeaway?

I feel body confident depending on the day of the week and hour of the day. I’ve given up trying to be body confident all the time. I want to feel body neutral, where I don’t think about it. I want to be happy in my own skin. I think that’s really difficult as a woman and with social media. I haven’t got it right yet.

Probably a pizza. One night it will be margherita, one night it will have all the meats and one night it will be pineapple.

Are you a gym bunny? I go to the gym because it makes me sleep better and it gives me more energy.

How do you like to keep fit? I love horse riding. Weather permitting, I’d rather go horse riding than go on the treadmill.

Do you play any sports? Are you a healthy eater?

I love food and I love to cook. I try to make healthy choices and try not to beat myself up about it if I don’t. What’s life without cheese?!

What’s your favourite meal of the day?

Does being in the public eye put pressure on you to look good?

Sometimes it does. If I know I’m going to be photographed I will agonise over picking an outfit and will normally run it by my mother. But then I was in IKEA the other day in tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt with chocolate on it because I’d been baking. I was owning the fact I looked crap!

Dinner. I don’t eat breakfast. I drink coffee until I have to eat something. Lunch is normally at work, so it’s eating on the go.

Have you got a top health tip?

What are your guilty pleasures?

NUTRITION CONSULTANT IAN MARBER SAYS… “We have long been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many people choose not to eat in the morning, perhaps because they simply aren’t hungry, but also as a method of reducing calorie intake. “Jessica is having plenty of protein at lunch in the goat’s cheese and the lentils. There’s more protein at dinner in the beef, along with iron, but she should add green vegetables such as spinach or broccoli. “Anchovies are a great source of omega 3. The actress likes to work out three days a week with a personal trainer. “We do lots of cardio and strength training, especially for my legs and back, because it’s quite weak from years of gymnastics,” she explains. “I concentrate on making everything strong, and you can’t do that with just cardio.”

2

Since having her four-year-old son, Silas, with husband Justin Timberlake, Jessica has altered her outlook on her body. “Having that perfect bikini body – that’s changed,” she reveals. “I just want to be healthy. I want to feel good and free of pain, so I can have fun with my family.”

3

Yoga provides the perfect way for Jessica to unwind from her busy schedule. “I want that competitive element in my life only in particular places,” she says. “In a yoga class, it’s really just your mat, your own practice. I’ve never felt any competition that you can sometimes sense in other workout classes.”

4

In her twenties, the Sinner star decided to stop being so hard on her body. “I spent so many years of my young life playing soccer and jamming my knees, running and sprinting, and so many years as a gymnast gashing my body that I realised, ‘I can’t keep this up,’” she says.

‘All my baby hopes were pinned on one tiny embryo!’ Charlie Rawlinson, 34, from Benfleet, Essex, endured years of pain and a cancer scare before doctors told her she had little chance of becoming a mum. But radical surgery gave her dream back to her

S

tanding frozen to the spot in my bathroom, I stared down at the two blue lines. My eyes were so filled with tears I could barely see them, but I knew they were there. “We did it!” my boyfriend Mark, 29, whispered as he pulled me in for a hug. It was 15 November 2018 and I’d been running out of hope I might ever become a mummy. Suddenly, all the health worries of the previous few years just melted away. “It’s all been worth it, babe,” I replied, spilling tears on Mark’s shoulders. Mark, a database developer, and I have been together for six years, but the problems began in my teens. I had ridiculously heavy periods. Sometimes they were so bad I’d set my alarm an hour earlier in the morning to take pain relief, just so I could get out of bed for school. On top of that, I developed bowel spasms. “It’s definitely a bad case of IBS,” my doctor said firmly, sending me off with painkillers. I was in agony throughout my twenties, but when I hit my thirties things really began to spiral out of control. “You have to go and see someone, this cannot be normal,” Mark said, worried, as I doubled over in pain. “I’ve always had it. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine,” I reassured him, but he didn’t look convinced. I’d been to my doctor a few times over the years, but eventually I’d just accepted I had IBS and stopped going. But when the pains grew worse, even stopping me from going to work some days, Mark insisted I seek professional help. In 2016, I finally persuaded my GP to refer me to Southend University Hospital, Essex, where I was given an ultrasound. “Apparently my kidney is three times the size it should be!” I told Mark later that night. “Don’t sound so bloody excited!” he joked.

64

But in reality I was terrified – I had no idea what was going on in my own body. Over the following few weeks I was sent for multiple tests including a CT scan, MRI and even a colonoscopy – but medics couldn’t work out why my kidney was so enlarged. They also found a blockage in my bowel so they decided to operate as there was a chance it was cancerous. In August 2016, I went for surgery at the hospital. It lasted five hours and when I woke the nurse looked very worried. “You’ve lost a lot of blood and we had to leave some of the mass there as we couldn’t She was fitted with a stoma bag

‘The stoma bag felt horrible – I cried for days’

get to it, which means we’ve been forced to fit you with a stoma bag…” she trailed off. “What the hell?” I thought, anxiety hitting me like a train. After they explained it to me I calmed down, even though I’d been told beforehand that it was very unlikely I’d need a stoma bag. The medics reassured me that it could easily be reversed, but I was devastated and cried and cried for days. The stoma looked and felt horrible.

BAD TIMING The two-week wait to find out if the mass had been malignant was tense, but finally I got the good news that it was not cancerous. The relief was incredible, as I’d almost convinced myself I had cancer. “We have worked out the cause of your problems. You have a severe case of endometriosis,” the doctor explained. I’d never heard of it, but after just a few hours of research all my medical issues suddenly became clear. The condition means that the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus – the endometrium – grows outside the uterus, causing pain and inflammation. I was referred to a specialist at University College Hospital, London, in January 2017. “Due to such a late diagnosis, you’re blocked up all over the place,” my consultant said, giving me an apologetic look. I was told that not only were my bowel and small intestine blocked up, but also that my fallopian tubes might have to be removed. “I dread to think what this means for us starting a family,” I said to Mark tearfully. It was such bad timing. Mark was a few years younger than me and I was more keen than him to have a baby, but I’d finally convinced him it was time to start trying.

REAL LIFE Baby Eloise is “perfect”

“Let’s cross that bridge when we come to it. The most important thing is that we get you healthy,” he said, pragmatic as always. In November 2017, after exhausting all other options, I had a five-hour operation to remove my fallopian tubes and parts of my bladder. Doctors repaired some plumbing linking my kidneys to my bladder. There was a risk they’d have to remove my left ovary, but they managed to save it. And they reversed my stoma at the same time, which I was grateful for. We’d agreed with the hospital that I would have IVF after the op and I was clinging onto that hope for dear life. “I didn’t even get a chance to freeze any eggs, it all happened so fast,” I cried to my mate Demi, while I was laid up recovering. “At least you’ve still got your ovaries, think of the positives,” she said, trying to console me. I was desperate to start IVF as soon as possible, but the process was not a quick one. After many referrals, we finally had an appointment at the Bourn Hall Fertility Clinic in Wickford, Essex, in August 2018. There was a lot of information to take in, but this was our only chance to get IVF free on the

“One lucky embryo!” Mark whispered excitedly, trying to keep my spirits up. I tried to hide how upset I was as I wanted to stay strong for our one chance, but I couldn’t help but feel dejected. The odds sounded less than promising and although I tried not to get my hopes up too much, I really was pinning my chances of becoming a mum on this one little embryo. It was very stressful, so when I came to take a pregnancy test exactly two weeks later, at first I couldn’t even look at it. 50ml maple syrup Handful of walnuts Handful of pumpkin seeds Handful of physalis 3 tbsp coconut yogurt

METHOD

■ Roast the pumpkin or squash the day before. Preheat the oven to 180˚C/350˚F. Place on a baking tray and cook for an hour or until soft. Allow to cool completely, then the next day, scoop out the flesh and discard the seeds and skin. ■ To make the pancake batter, blitz the oats in a blender on full speed for 30 seconds until they’re a fine

Mix with a spatula, then blitz for 30 seconds or until well combined. ■ Lightly grease a non-stick pan with coconut oil and place over a very low heat. The pan is hot enough when a tiny bit of batter dropped in sizzles. Add 5 tbsp batter and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove, grease the pan

MY GUILTY PLEASURE is Viennese biscuits. They’re dangerous once you start. But once you’ve had three, they basically don’t count.

THE BEST MEAL OUT I’VE EVER HAD was at Kanishka in Mayfair. Their chicken tikka pies are the best things I’ve ever tasted.

MY SIGNATURE DISH is pan-fried chorizo in chilli and garlic oil – I might add prawns if I feel fancy.

FEEL FULLER FOR LONGER Hunger is one of our most powerful urges, so it’s no wonder many of us fail to stick to those new year diets. To help you stay on track, brings you foolproof ways to keep those cravings at bay START OFF WITH SOUP A bowl of warming soup helps to fill your stomach and takes the edge off your appetite, which means you’re less likely to overeat at the next course. In a study by the Centre of Nutrition and Health at Oxford Brookes University, people were fed exactly the same number of calories, either as solid or as liquid food, and the soup drinkers felt fuller for longer.

DRINK BEFORE YOU EAT

PHOTOS: Getty

Have a large glass of water 10 minutes before you’re due to sit down to eat and the sense of fullness will help you eat less. Water is a better choice than high-calorie soft drinks – a can of full-sugar Coca Cola contains around 140 calories, while a 250ml glass of wine has more than 200 calories, but can also stimulate your appetite.

68

SNACK SMARTER The hungrier you are when you start to eat, the longer it takes your hunger to subside, so you’ll end up eating more. The best way to avoid getting over-hungry but not ruin your appetite is to nibble on snacks every three to four hours. Protein-rich options (like a yogurt or a boiled egg) or fibre-rich snacks (such as oatcakes or hummus with crudités) are the best choices.

HEALTH TURN OFF THE TV With such hectic schedules, many of us multitask by eating dinner while catching up on our favourite shows. But you’re putting your waistline at risk. That’s because of something called “distracted eating”, which means that when we eat in front of the TV or computer or while driving, it can slow down the “I’m full” signal that the stomach sends to the brain. Dr Tim Bond of the Tea Advisory Panel (teaadvisorypanel.com) says, “Everyone’s on autopilot. Mindfulness is being aware of your mind and you can’t do that if you’re watching Corrie. You need to make informed choices and the only way is to pay atttention.”

EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEG

DITCH THE JUNK INCREASE THE PROTEIN

When we eat protein, signals are sent to the brain about our energy intake and this helps to curb hunger. It can take 15-20 minutes after eating food for those signals to reach the brain, but foods that are high in protein seem to do it faster than carbohyd rates and fat. Protein also helps with the feeling of fullness, as it takes more time to digest. Aim for at least one serving of protein (think lean meat, eggs, beans and pulses) at most meals – about 85-110g or a portion the size of your palm.

TAKE YOUR TIME

It’s recommended that you take 20-30 minutes to eat each meal – hard if your normal lunchtime routine is a rushed sandwich at your desk. Many of us are so used to gulping down food before getting on with the next task that it’s hard to break the habit. But there are some tips that can help you train yourself into better eating habits. Put your lunchtime sandwich down between bites. At dinner, sit at a table and lay your knife and fork down between each mouthful. Chew your food well before taking a second bite. Try to focus on what you’re eating and take time to enjoy the flavour instead of shovelling it in. Taking sips of water and talking to others also helps. Choose foods that take time

and effort to eat. Corn on the cob, a crunchy salad or fish with bones cannot be rushed, and will force you to eat more slowly and therefore help you to feel full more quickly. Time yourself for a couple days to get an understanding of how long you normally take to eat a meal, and let that motivate you to slow down in the future.

Ever wondered why, when you start eating junk food, it’s hard to stop? Just as the right foods help you to feel fuller for longer, the wrong foods can do the reverse. Things like burgers or fried chicken don’t satisfy us for as long as a traditional meal and deliver an intense reward hit straight to our brains that leaves us craving more. You can still enjoy the odd treat, but if you’re going out for the day think about taking a healthy packed lunch. It’s also a good idea to ban high-cal snacks at home to minimise temptation.

Getting our five a day is drummed into us, but while most people think of it in terms of the health benefits of vitamins and other nutrients, the high water content of fruit and vegetables will also help to fill you up. A study at New York’s Cornell University even found that eating fruit helped to improve food choices. Researchers gave 120 people a small snack before they went shopping – either an apple slice or a biscuit. A third control group didn’t get a snack. After analysing their trollies, they found that those given the apple slice bought 28 per cent more fruit and veg than those who ate the biscuit, and 25 per cent more than people who ate nothing.

FAT ISN’T YOUR FOE We’ve been told all our lives to avoid fat, but fat-free and diet versions of popular foods often have more sugar in them to make them tastier. Far from being a cause of weight gain, “good” fats – rich in mono and polyunsaturates and found in olive oil, nuts, oily fish and occasional full-fat dairy products – curb the appetite, slowing the rate at which the stomach empties and so delaying the point at which it signals for more food.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND The more fibre you eat, the happier your gut will be, so pile your plate with fresh vegetables, especially greens, unprocessed grains and legumes. Fibre boosts the amount of friendly bacteria in the gut, which increases the levels of good-mood chemicals that are picked up by your brain. In addition, fibre induces the release of gut hormones called peptides, which reduce appetite.

THE LOWDOWN: This five-star hotel is built into the cliffside in Ardmore on Ireland’s south coast. Thanks to its unique location, every bedroom has a sea view – as do both the restaurants. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, dine in the Michelin-starred House Restaurant, or for a less formal – and more purse friendly – option try the Bar Restaurant. Wherever you choose to eat, the food is exceptional – our duck couldn’t have been more succulent. THE SPA: We’re big fans of an outdoor hot tub, especially when it comes with a sea view. The heated indoor pool also has fabulous views across the bay through floor-toceiling windows. There’s a steam room and sauna alongside, as well as a fitness room and some seriously chic seats to chill out in.

CELTIC MANOR

We indulged in the signature Out To Sea treatment, which combines a hot stone back massage with a facial – perfect for anyone who can’t decide which treatment to have! OUT AND ABOUT: Head out on the circular cliff path for some fresh air and spectacular views. You can also go for a walk on the nearby beach, where water

sports such as sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are available in the summer months. HOW TO BOOK: See cliffhouse hotel.ie, from £345 per night for two people sharing a sea view room including a three-course dinner at the Bar Restaurant, breakfast and a 25-minute treatment each (or from £387 to include dinner in the House Restaurant). Complimentary yoga classes are offered Monday to Friday throughout January and February. See aerlingus.com for flights to Cork Airport, which is a 55-minute drive away. For more on Ireland, see ireland.com.

THE LOWDOWN: Set in 2,000 acres of parkland in the Usk Valley in Monmouthshire, this five-star resort offers stunning scenery and luxurious lodgings. There are several bars and restaurants to choose from. We had the best three-course meal we’ve ever eaten at Steak On Six, with succulent steak followed by a mouthwatering “burnt at the table” bourbon vanilla crème brûlée. For a nightcap, head to the resort’s plush Mulberry Bar, where we can highly recommend the Candy Floss Royal cocktail. The hotel’s Signature Collection is an adults-only floor with exclusive access to the Signature Lounge – a quiet, stylish private bar, perfect for a pre-dinner drink. It also offers complimentary coffee, tea, magazines and newspapers. THE SPA: The resort’s Forum Spa has 16 treatment rooms, a stunning 20-metre Roman bath-inspired swimming pool,

TRAVEL

DETOX favourites such as fish and chips, plus a good selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Or why not try the gorgeous Fun Fair Favourites Afternoon Tea (£23.50pp), including raspberry popcorn and cotton candy, all served on a big wheel. And don’t forget to check out the cocktail menu. We tried the Vanilla Latte Martini and the Bramble (made with Brighton gin) and can confirm both were delicious.

THE SPA: HarSpa is set over two floors below ground and is free to use for hotel guests. The state-of-the-art complex is built within old smugglers’ tunnels beneath the hotel and seafront, and you certainly feel like you’ve been whisked back in time as

you relax beneath the vaulted brickwork arches of The Grotto. Facilities include a heated pool, hydrotherapy pool, gym, hot tubs, steam room, sauna and relaxation areas. There is also a full treatment menu in the beauty rooms – we tried a 30-minute hot

stone back massage (£50), which eased away tension and left us feeling 2in taller! HOW TO BOOK: Standard rooms from £125 per night, based on two people sharing, including breakfast. Book at harbourhotels. co.uk/brighton.

The hotel is at the heart of the resort

saunas, steam rooms and two relaxation lounges. We tried the Hot Mineral Body Boost massage, a relaxing 50-minute treatment ending with a scalp massage and facial using Elemis products. What better way to see off a New Year hangover!

OUT AND ABOUT: Take the complimentary bus to see the gorgeous 19th-century Manor House – a former maternity ward where the resort’s owner, Sir Terence Matthews, was born in 1943. Then head to the Twenty Ten Clubhouse, which was

built for the 2010 Ryder Cup, and enjoy the spectacular views of one of the resort’s three award-winning golf courses from the bar and restaurant, Rafters. Footballer Gareth Bale and Barack Obama have both dined here in the past.

HOW TO BOOK: Book at celtic-manor.com, B&B from £119 in a double room. The Signature Spa Experience includes full use of the facilities, a choice of two treatments, a light lunch, a glass of prosecco and chocolatedipped strawberries, from £139.

THE

F

arewell 2019, it’s been… interesting. Although Brexit bedlam and polarising politics have dominated, there’s been plenty of fine TV, film and music to keep our chins up across the year. Love Island gave us the summer of love (and plenty of mugging off), while Lil Nas X and Lizzo ruled the radio. Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Olivia Colman became our Brit queens in Hollywood, while Jen An nearly broke the internet with her Friends teaser on Instagram. So, as we head into 2020, here’s our round-up of entertainment’s big winners over the past 12 months. Enjoy!

LOVE ISLAND

! S D R AWA LIZZO

HERO

She came, she saw… she conquered. OF THE Yep, Lizzo was our YEAR stand-out performer, a multitalented singer, rapper, actress, flautist and advocate for body positivity, who made such a mark on pop culture in 2019 that the likes of Beyoncé and Rihanna have had to bow down in her honour. Although she’s been on the circuit since 2012, it’s only now that people have finally stood up to take notice of the US star, who landed eight Grammy nods for her third album Cuz I Love You, and starred opposite J.Lo in the hit movie Hustlers. Her tunes are banging, her style is impeccable but it’s the message she spreads of self love that makes her our most worthy hero of 2019. “Never, ever let somebody stop you or shame you from being yourself,” she preaches like the queen she is. In her own words – she is “100% that bitch”. Long may she reign.

Could it be any other? It may not have been the best series (the third takes the title for us) – but for the sheer impact it made in OF THE 2019, Love Island runs away YEAR with the title of the most talked-about show of the year. From Amy’s tearful goodbye, to Sherif’s unceremonious exit to Maura’s now infamous “fanny flutters”, the gang provided hours of entertainment (did anyone actually leave the sofa over the summer?!) that culminated in Amber and Greg leaving the villa victorious. Take that, Michael. HONOURABLE MENTION LINE OF DUTY WORDS: Sarah Morton PHOTOS: David Appleby/Paramount/The Hollywood Archive, Getty, © 2018 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc

SINGLE OF THE YEAR

FILM OF THE YEAR

JOKER

OLD TOWN ROAD LIL NAS X This country-inspired novelty rap song was inescapable (if you have a child of primary school age you will know every word) and it launched about a million different celeb remixes. But the fact it’s now officially the longest-running number one in US chart history cements its importance and wins Old Town Road this coveted award. Newcomer Lil Nas X couldn’t have produced a more iconic 113 seconds of music. We doff our cowboy hat to you, sir.

LOTTIE LION

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea and the violence and grim subject matter raised some eyebrows, but for all those who didn’t give the sublime Joker a chance… well the joke’s on you. This was an acting masterclass from Joaquin Phoenix, who played failed comedian Arthur Fleck’s descent into madness so convincingly we’re surprised he didn’t really lose his mind. The result is the best depiction of a clown we’ve seen since Tim Curry’s Pennywise emerged from a washing line like something out of a demented HONOURABLE Daz advert in the original IT. MENTION ROCKETMAN

HONOURABLE MENTION BAD GUY BILLIE EILISH

VILLAIN OF THE YEAR

For those of you who watched The Apprentice, you’ll know the hero of the piece was loveable legend Thomas Skinner, the “pillah” salesman whose infectious enthusiasm for every task made him perfect TV fodder. And then there was Lottie Lion, the antithesis of terrific Tom – a spiky, bossy, ruthless teen whose desire to succeed in front of Alan, Claude and Karen instantly got people’s backs up. The pushy posho won zero friends – and zero investment HONOURABLE from Lord MENTION Sugar as TRISTAN a result. THOMPSON

REALITY SHOW OF THE YEAR

RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE UK We weren’t sure if the big-budget US juggernaut would translate to the UK, and sure enough when we first clapped eyes on Baga Chipz and Sumting Wong, we realised we weren’t in Hollywood any more. But the Brit queens with the rough edges ended up making fantastic TV, creating some of the funniest moments in Drag Race her-story, and a Snatch Game that will surely go down as one of the greatest ever.

THE ! S D R A AW FRIENDS COMEBACK

OF THE YEAR

HOLLYOAKS It may nott gett th the viewing figures of its prime-time rivals – and OF THE people still YEAR consider it a teen soap – but Hollyoaks consistently tackles huge subjects with solid performers who deserve this accolade as much as anyone in Corrie or ‘Enders. In 2019, the residents of the not-so-quiet Chester village dealt with radicalisation, abuse and even a serial killer did the rounds. And the recent “Who Shot Mercedes?” storyline proved they can pull off the ultimate soap whodunnit with a bloody brilliant twist to boot. WORDS: Sarah Morton PHOTOS: Getty, Shutterstock

HONOURABLE MENTION EMMERDALE

Well, strictly speaking it wasn’t a Friends comeback as such (the show’s 25th anniversary provided lots of nostalgic content, but no film or new series) but when Jennifer Aniston joined Instagram she gave fans the reunion they’d been dreaming of. Posing alongside the other cast members, Jen basically broke the internet, as the planet appeared to go wild for the gang’s enduring Friendship. Could we be any more excited to see six people in one photo?!

HONOURABLE MENTION THE JONAS BROTHERS

LIAM PAYNE AND NAOMI CAMPBELL

Young Mr Payne sure has some moves. Fresh from his split from unlikely baby mama Cheryl Tweedy, cougar-loving Liam then set his sights on arguably the biggest supermodel of all time – and got her! RANDOM COUPLE OF THE YEAR

MICHAEL CHOOSES JOANNA OVER AMBER

In the most dramatic episode of Love Island, Michael mugged off Amber in a brutal recoupling. To recap, poor Amber had stayed loyal to her man in Casa Amor – all while he was sticking it on new girl Joanna – and had to walk back into the main villa alone. She was then forced to come face to face with the pair around the fire pit, where Michael told her he had a stronger connection with Joanna. Unsurprisingly, Michael and Jo’s HONOURABLE romance ended before it even began. MENTION FLEABAG KISSES THE HOT PRIEST

KEANU REEVES

MAN OF THE YEAR

KHLOE IAN KARDASHIAN N VS JORDYN WOODS It’s hard to imagine FEUD a world where OF THE folk could care so much about two YEAR rich kids fighting over a basketball star. But when it was revealed Jordyn had been partying with Khloé’s baby daddy Tristan Thompson, we all lost our minds because Jordyn was BFFs with Khloé’s sister Kylie Jenner. Awkward. We were glued to Twitter as the drama played out, and the pair haven’t spoken since, although Jordyn recently took a lie detector test to prove her innocence. But in typical 2019 style, we’d lost interest by then.

TV MOMENT OF THE YEAR

The Keanu resurgence was in full effect, with two new movies and the accolade of being named “the internet’s boyfriend” among his many achievements. And it’s easy to see why the public adore him. As well as starring in hit after hit on the big screen, he’s a good guy who secretly donates millions to charity. To top off his fab 2019, the Bill And Ted star confirmed he’d found love when he stepped out with artist Alexandra Grant in November. Most excellent, dude!

HO HONOURABLE MENTION M GARETH THOMAS GARE

KID

OF THE YEAR

PRINCE ARCHIE OK, so he’s not strictly a child of reality TV, and he’s rarely been seen in public, but that doesn’t alter the fact that Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was the most anticipated new arrival of the year. Meghan and Harry’s firstborn has been largely shielded from the limelight, but that just means when we do get a rare glimpse of him we all go wild. He’s got some way to go before he can match the majesty of the great Prince George, but as royal babies go, he wins HONOURABLE 2019’s crown. MENTION SUNDAY MCCANN

WOMAN OF THE YEAR

HONOURABLE MENTION TAYLOR SWIFT VS SCOOTER BRAUN

PHOEBE EBE LERWALLERBRIDGE GE

Seriously, is there anything this woman can’t eatest do?! She’s responsible for some of the greatest television of the past decade in Fleabag and nd agic Killing Eve and she’s been working her magic on the new James Bond movie. She’s an Emmy and BAFTA award winner and her one-woman man live show sold out in seconds. There’s no doubt Phoebe is the most soughtafter female in the industry right now, and with her very British wit and shedloads of talent we, as a nation, couldn’t be prouder of her. Watch her dominate HONOURABLE all over again in 2020. MENTION OLIVIA COLMAN

TV Q&A

‘THERE WERE NO EGOS AMONG US!’ The Masked Singer panellists Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross and Ken Jeong, and host Joel Dommett, on your new TV obsession

J

anuary is shaping up to be a pretty decent month of telly, if ITV’s latest offering, The Masked Singer, is anything to go by. Already a raving success across the pond, the show sees 12 celebrities perform each week in a singing competition, while keeping their identity concealed behind an extravagant masked costume. The job of the panellists – presenters Davina McCall and Jonathan Ross, The Hangover star Ken Jeong and singer Rita Ora – is to try to guess who the person is behind the disguise, while host Joel Dommett oversees proceedings. At the end of each episode at least one of the singers is unmasked after competing in a sing-off. Got all that? We’ve had a sneak peek at the first instalment and it doesn’t disappoint – not least because some of the suggestions for the masked singers include Angela Lansbury and Nigel Havers! Here, Davina, Jonathan, Ken and Joel (Rita phoned

76

in sick!) tell us what it was like to work together and the masks they would’ve chosen to sing in… Hi guys! It looks like you had fun filming this… Jonathan: Yeah, we had a good time. Some of us have worked together before, but never on something as regular as this. None of us had worked with Ken before and we were all so excited when we heard he was doing it, partly because we were fans of his and partly because when you look at the American show and what Ken brings to it [he’s a panellist on the US version too], you can’t imagine the show not having that.

High praise, Ken! You’ve been a doctor, actor and a comedian. How did this job compare? Ken: I’d never done a panel show prior to The Masked Singer and it wasn’t necessarily a goal of mine. Everything has happened organically in my life. I didn’t plan to quit medicine and do comedy. I’ve had a habit of going with the flow. There’s something unique about The Masked Singer. In the US it’s the No.1 show. It’s the biggest family show out there. Davina, have you and Rita become good friends? Davina: Well, Rita’s extremely busy. I was a great friend of hers while we were filming and we do message each other. I’ve been sliding into her DMs. Jonathan: Rita’s lovely. Davina: Very funny. Joel: There’s one time where we have a day off between filming and she goes to Milan. Davina: Her schedule is brutal! Davina, how was it on the panel – you’re usually presenting? I’ve never done anything like this before. I really

enjoyed it and it was nice watching Joel work his arse off, running around the stage. He was really amazing. Did you get any tips from Davina, Joel? Davina: He doesn’t need any tips. Joel: I’d always go, “Davina, how am I doing?” It was daunting for me being in front of legends. Davina: You were very confident. Joel: It’s such a pleasure being part of a show where the format has been tried and tested. And it works so well across the world. What helped me was the fact that these four got on so well. They had their own vibe going. We all got on well. There were no egos and it’s so rare for that to happen. The proof is in the pudding. If you weren’t panellists, would you take part as contestants? Davina: I think it would be a lovely show to do. I’d love to do it. Jonathan: I wouldn’t, because I don’t sing well enough. Everyone can actually sing. Davina: No, wait, come here… [Davina whispers in Jonathan’s ear] Jonathan: Yeah, he was bad, but… Davina: No, but you love them because they did it.

ZONEIN

Which costume would you have chosen? Jonathan: I would quite like to be a boa constrictor, but after it’s eaten a goat. You know when you see a boa and it’s eaten an animal far too big and it’s like, “Man, you really had to dislocate your jaw for that one.” That’s me after Christmas lunch. I’d like to make it difficult and be a jellyfish or a velvet worm.

Ken: I love the monster outfit. Davina: Cougar. I’ve thought about that a lot. Jonathan: Haven’t we all?! Who would be your dream celeb? Davina: Whoever comes on the show would be our dream person! Every single person gets into the character of their costume. They’re all big celebrities, so it’s actually a bit daft running around in a monster costume, but they

own it and we love them for that. Jonathan: Also, the element of surprise. It’s so great being surprised. Were there any big reveals that were totally different to your guesses? Jonathan: There were a few! Davina: But then you go, “Oh!” Jonathan: Some of us were close, but not close enough. Other times we weren’t close at all.

Are the singers ever offended by the guesses you make? Jonathan: I hope so. We made sure to be supportive of the singing as much as possible. Sometimes we did say, “Maybe that’s not a professional singer,” and it was. That’s the closest to being awkward it got. The Masked Singer, Saturday 4 January, 7pm, ITV

RUSSELL WILL BE A M MAGNIFICENT MARCO

SOAP In these drab times of Brexit-laden QUEENS doom and gloom, there’s one GLAM person we can rely on for good old-fashioned, big-haired glamour UP – and that’s Dame Joan Collins.

It’s a question many of us have asked ourselves – who’d play us in a movie of our life? Well, fiery chef Marco Pierre White gets to have not just one or two Hollywood stars portraying him, but potentially more, with Gladiator actor Russell Crowe confirmed as the “third or fourth Marco”! It’s a brilliant piece of casting and Crowe – a bit of a bad boy himself – is also writing and directing the movie. He’ll be perfect as the more grizzled Marco we know from TV shows such as Hell’s Kitchen and, er, the Knorr ads. However, it’s yet to be announced who’ll play him in his younger years, when he set the culinary world on fire and ditched his wife Lisa Butcher for wearing the wrong wedding dress on their big day. If you’re wondering, I’ve always thought Renée Zellweger should play me, as everyone says I’m like Bridget Jones. But I’d need to do eserve something amazing to deserve a film about me. There’s still time…

FAMILY MATTERS FOR BROOKLYN

78

ELLIE TO THE RESCUE

Brooklyn first started dating Transformers actress Nic in October after his split from model Hana Cross – and while she’s the daughterr of a billionaire and pretty much New York royalty, it’s great to see she’s quite happy with such a downto-earth gathering. Hold on to her, Brooklyn – she’s clearly a keeper!

Singer Ellie Goulding recently S c came to the aid of a YouTube star w whose car had been “T-boned” by a Royal Mail truck on the A40. Nothing says true love like introducing your girlfriend to your grandparents, does it? Brooklyn Beckham’s had some fairly rocky romances in recent times, so I’m sure Posh was pleased to see him opting for a family night out with new girlfriend Nicola Peltz and Vic’s mum and dad Jackie and Tony, as well as his siblings Cruz and Romeo. The group took in a West End show and were happy to tuck into street food rather than going to a swanky restaurant.

Over the festive period, the Dynasty legend met up with fellow 80s soap stars Linda Gray and Donna Mills at a lavish Christmas bash and all three women looked fabulous in their leopard print and glitzy finery. In case you’re not quite as long in the tooth as I am, the trio played Alexis Carrington in Dynasty, Sue Ellen Ewing in Dallas and Abby Cunningham in Knots Landing respectively. Being in different soaps, the threesome never got to have a cat-fight together, but they’re a reminder of a more fun, fabulous era, when shows weren’t issue-led, but unashamedly offered storylines dominated by greed, back-stabbing, betrayal and infidelity. Oh, how I miss those shoulder pads!
