TIPS FOR SMART SNACKING

See snacking as an opportunity to catch up on missed nutrients. If lunch was a little low on vegies, consider grazing on some carrot and celery sticks with hummus for afternoon tea. Going for long periods without eating can cause your blood sugar to drop, making you more likely to overindulge later. When Jennifer Aniston gets hungry, she’ll grab something more substantial like a cheese stick or a cup of soup. Beware of supersizing. That ‘healthy’ wholegrain cookie that’s bigger than your hand? Let’s just say that if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

A snack might claim to be healthy, but it’s still advisable to read the label. Vegie crisps might seem better than regular chips but they’ll often have similar kilojoules.

So,isit OK to eat between meals? Ultimately, the issue may not be so much aboutwhether you snack or not, but how muchand what kind of choices you’re making. Things like fresh fruit and vegies withhummus are often healthier (and cheaper) than pre-made stuff, so consider packing some for work to avoid making impulse buys. ‘I always have healthy snackslike fruit and vegetables with me,’ Jennifer Lopez says. Alittle bit of prep can also go a long way.Jennifer Aniston keeps a supply of hard-boiled eggs and raw vegies in Tupperware containers. Or try her fave snack, and pop some red grapes in the freezer. ‘They’re really easy and delicious,’ she says. TIP Eat slower and listen to your body – after all, no-one can tell if you’re no longer hungry except you! JODI ANASTA LUPITA NYONG’O

TIP Remember: one size doesn’t fit all. While grazing may suit one person’s lifestyle, if you live for preparing elaborate dinners at home, it might be best to go light on afternoon tea.

HOW AUSSIE DRINKING HABITS ARE CHANGING… 25% 1 in 3 No. 1 66% DID YOU KNOW?

The percentage of drinkers aged 21-34 who are trying to reduce their overall intake. The percentage of Australians who have reduced their overall consumption of alcohol.
