In a running race, I’m sure the former Olympic gold medallist would leave me standing in the blocks. Oh, and she lives in a stunning Malibu mansion, which I definitely don’t. (I did used to take holidays at my uncle-in-law’s mountain home in Malibu though). However, I can categorically say I do own more pairs of shoes than her. Caitlyn admits to having about 30 – mainly because of her size 13 feet. Last time I counted, there were 76 pairs in my wardrobe, and that’s not including my vast array of flip flops! But there’s so much more to Caitlyn than her shoe hoard. Some of the team were lucky enough to go to Malibu where she opened the doors, not just to her fabulous home, but also to her heart. In

Caitlyn, who came out as a transgender woman in 2015, aged 65, has lived in the sprawling four-bedroom home for six years. It’s set on 12 acres of land and has panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. She shares it with her Labradors, Baxter and Bertha, and with Sophia Hutchins – the 23-year-old beauty entrepreneur she’s reportedly romantically involved with (more on that later).

Sophia, who’s Caitlyn’s manager, is there on the day of our shoot and interjects when we ask whether Caitlyn is a domestic goddess. “No, not even close!” Sophia exclaims, before the pair erupt into laughter. The living space features photos of Caitlyn, who came in sixth place in the last series of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, with her children. Caitlyn has six biological children – Burt and Cassandra from her first marriage, Brandon and Brody from her second marriage, and Kendall and Kylie from her third marriage to Kardashian ‘momager’ Kris Jenner. During their 23-year marriage, Caitlyn helped bring up Kris’s children – her stepchildren – Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Rob. On the opposite side of the room is a picture of entrepreneur Kylie and supermodel Kendall when tthey were younger with their father before the g gender reassignment surgery. There’s also a framed h handwritten Father’s Day letter dated 2006 from Kylie – who last year was named the youngest selfmade billionaire ever – which reads, “I love you so much, you are the best dad ever.” “They’ve all done so well, it seems like I was just changing Kylie’s diapers!” Caitlyn, whose children still call her dad, tells us, adding, “Some of their drive is from me but I have to give a lot of credit to Kris.” Here, Caitlyn exclusively opens up about her family, how her life has changed five years on from coming

How did you used to feel when you looked in the mirror before you transitioned? It just never seemed right. People’s perception of me, because of my athletic background, and my personal perception were two different things. The morning after my win at the Olympic Games [Caitlyn, then Bruce Jenner, won gold in the men’s decathlon in the 1976 games] I went into the bathroom – I didn’t have a stitch of clothing on – and I put the medal on. There was a full-length mirror and I looked into it and thought, “Oh my God. Did I just build up Bruce so big that I’m stuck with him for the rest of my life?” That image of the Olympic champion, of male dominance, really wasn’t me. I got sick and tired of being identified by the 48 hours I was inside that stadium. My story got so much better after I transitioned and lived my life authentically. I feel the story of equality, and the struggle I went through, is so much more interesting than the games. You must feel an overwhelming sense of contentment now… Yes. People are learning that gender is much more fluid than they thought it was. Because of people being more open, this issue comes forward at a much younger age. I like that people can be identified and accepted – depending on their circumstances – at a younger age so they can move on with their lives. Certainly, in the community, we have tremendous challenges with

murder rates, prostitution and suicide, but I’ve also met so many people who have transitioned and are living their authentic life and have prospered now. What would you say to your younger self? Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. Yes, there were a lot of struggles – the 80s were the worst. I lived in a house for six years in my thirties and isolated myself from the world. I was going to try and transition before I was 40, but I got to 39 and couldn’t do it. It wasn’t time for me personally or in society. Then, five months later, after I’d decided I had to get back into life, I met Kris and we were together for 23 years, raised a great family and had two more kids. I don’t regret any of that. Which of your daughters gives the best fashion advice? I want to wear fun, young stuff, but in reality, I’m 70 years old and I have to be age appropriate. I struggle with that. The person I went to most, especially at the beginning, was Kim. I remember asking Kim a question about fashion and she looked at me and said, “Well, I am fashion” [laughs]. What she wears is what becomes fashion. She’s a trendsetter, so I’ve always appreciated her advice. Between her, Kendall and Kylie, it’s covered. Well, you look very glam… It does take a bit of work but dressing up is a lot of fun. I practised for 50 years and I learnt all this stuff a long time WWW.OK.CO.UK 11

ago, so I’ve been doing it for a long time. I do have hair extensions, but at the age of 65, I was blessed that I had enough hair on my head left to tie an extension onto it! You have an impressive wardrobe. How many pairs of shoes do you own? That fit? [Laughs]. Shoes are a tough deal for me. I’m a 13 wide [UK 12.5] so I can’t buy them off the rack. The ones I have were made for me and they’re pretty expensive so I don’t have a lot. I have about 20 or 30 pairs. Do you have Botox or fillers and maintain yourself in that way? Yes, all my life I’ve watched what my ex-wives were doing for night creams and for this and that, and I do all of that now. I take care of my skin, I wear my sunblock. I’m fortunate at the age of 70 that I look okay. I always thought, “I don’t want to be an old chick!” I wanted to be younger but I found out old chicks can still be cool. Life’s not over. I’m very fortunate to be in the position I’m in and I understand that I’m privileged. I’ve had male privilege, celebrity privilege, white privilege. I’ve had all these privileges and I get that a lot of people don’t have those types of things, but I try and use those things for good. When I transitioned, because of my celebrity status, I was treated very differently. I try and take that platform and use it for the community. A few years back, I started a foundation to raise money for trans organisations. In the future, I’d like to start a scholarship programme for trans youths, too. When the news about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moving away from royal life broke, there were reports comparing them to Kylie and Kim in terms of the money they could make. Is the comparison a compliment? It’s very much a compliment to the family. I don’t know much about that situation but I’m sure if they were free to do what they wanted they could probably do a lot, but it’s complicated – and I think my family’s tough!

You once said you’ve never felt feminine but always felt female. What’s your take on it now? Little Bruce was living in here for 65 years, so I’ve had to grow into my femininity. It’s a work in progress and every year I feel more feminine. I will never be totally feminine. Why? Because little Bruce still lives inside me. When I transitioned, I thought Bruce had pretty much done everything he could do in his life, so let’s give Caitlyn a chance. Caitlyn comes out and lives her life but little Bruce is still there. At the start I thought, “I can’t do all the things I did before, but that’s a bunch of baloney.” Bruce used to race cars and girls can race cars, so I thought, “Let’s go to the race track!” I’ve got back into flying planes as well. I got myself another plane and I fly myself everywhere now. Women can do anything they want! 12

How long have you lived here in this house? Six years – I was living here when I transitioned. I didn’t change anything when I moved in but I am going to do some expansions. It takes forever to get a permit around here. How would you like to renovate? I’d like to extend the kitchen and I want to make the master bedroom twice the size. I’d also like to put a screening room in. Plus, I’d like to add another garage with a guest house above it. Which is your favourite area of the house? The front porch because of the beautiful view. I spend time in the Jacuzzi there all year.

Are you a domestic goddess? I’m okay with domestic stuff but I’m really good at fixing things. It was probably a mistake telling my ex-wives that! I still have little Bruce inside me who runs around and fixes everything and cleans up, but as far as everyday domestic stuff goes, I’m not as good. I get everyone their coffee in the morning and I’m probably better at the dishes than anyone else. I’m extraordinarily good at cleaning cars, too. What’s your most extravagant purchase? I have a Porsche GT2 RS. It’s a ridiculously great car! OK! he Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were met with cheers as they put on a united front in Bradford for their first engagement of 2020. The rapturous reception, which drew crowds five deep, came as the “Megxit” drama continued to unfold. Showing no signs of feeling blindsided by the Duke and Duchess of Sussexes’ shock resignation, the Cambridges appeared to be in high spirits. There was even a touch of romance as Kate smiled with delight when William handed her a white rose. Royal expert Katie Nicholl tells OK!, “The warm reception William and Kate received has given them a huge boost. They’ve stuck to the tried-and-tested approach, promoting a united royal family and it’s a success. They’re very much a team.” During their visit, William hinted at the royal rift, saying, “It’s okay to have challenges. We just need to deal with them and move forward rather than just be stuck in paralysis.” It was the couple’s first appearance since that historic Sandringham summit where Harry and Meghan’s future was discussed. The Cambridges were visiting the West Yorkshire city to support a number of community projects, including Older Yet Wiser, which, ironically given the current situation, aims to strengthen bonds between grandparents and their grandchildren. It led some to joke that Harry should have been sent along instead to improve his relationship with his own grandmother, Her Majesty the Queen. Kate, 38, who wore an Alexander McQueen coat over a Zara dress, enjoyed chatting to local children but later squashed rumours of having a fourth child, revealing, “I don’t think William wants any more.” The royal “golden couple” also spoke to young people about life in Bradford, made mango and kulfi milkshakes at MyLahore restaurant and visited The Muslim Women In Prison project. Harry, meanwhile, was smiling and joking just 24 hours later. He hosted the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draw at Buckingham Palace in what could be seen as his final engagement as a senior royal. But his apparent good humour appeared to mask the past few days’ turmoil. Royal expert Katie has learnt from a close friend of the duke’s that he is secretly saddened by his royal “break up”. “He might

be putting a brave face on but I suspect Harry’s heartbroken,” she tells us exclusively, adding, “He’s a sensitive soul and he’s a sweetheart. “He’s deeply loyal to Meghan and they’re excited about the new adventure ahead, but this may have come at a great personal cost with regards to his relationship with the royals.” In a video posted to the SussexRoyal Instagram account promoting the Mental Fitness Charter, he urged men to talk about depression. With Meghan and eight-month-old son Archie 5,000 miles away at their

Vancouver Island bolt hole, Katie points out, “The past week must have been incredibly hard. With William busy performing royal duties, he’s not got his brother by his side right now and his father, Prince Charles, has returned to Scotland.” This is the longest time the couple have spent apart, certainly since Archie’s birth. “Meghan is Harry’s lifeline and they share a strong bond,” says Katie, adding, “Although they’re both emotional, I believe Meghan is more resilient than Harry. I think it will be Prince Harry hosted the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draw

very tough for him being apart from her – and Archie – during this difficult time. I’m sure she will have been supporting him via phone calls.” Meanwhile, as the duke, 35, Meghan’s father attempted to Thomas Markle finalise a deal with the royal family, Meghan was hit with reports that her estranged father, Thomas Markle, is preparing to testify against her in the High Court. The case concerns her ongoing legal battle with a UK newspaper, which is accused of unlawfully publishing excerpts from a letter written by Meghan to her father. She’s the first member of the royal family to be involved in a High Court case such as this, and Katie notes, “It’s extraordinary that the first time Meghan may come face to face with her father since their fallout over the royal wedding could be in a court room.” She adds that this could possibly wreck any chances of a reconciliation with Thomas, 75, but says the Sussexes will be “keen to seek closure” and draw a line under the matter. The former actress, 38, broke cover for the first time since arriving back in her adopted homeland to have tea at Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre in Vancouver. Meghan swapped her royal wardrobe for a casual outfit, which was seen as a strong message about stepping back into her old life. Her cable knit jumper by The Row even looked identical to one she wore when playing Rachel in Suits. She also made a visit to the Justice For Girls charity after they received a mysterious email from a non-royal aide. The Sussexes did have some support, with actor Hugh Grant defending Harry’s decision to step back from formal royal duties, writing, “The tabloids effectively murdered his mother.” OK! DIVORCE DEAL IS AGREED ANT MCPARTLIN IS SAID TO HAVE PAID HIS EX WIFE LISA ARMSTRONG MORE THAN HALF HIS FORTUNE TO SETTLE THEIR SPLIT

t’s been one of the most bitter divorces in celebrity history but Ant McPartlin and Lisa Armstrong have finally agreed an out-of-court settlement, with Lisa reportedly netting a massive £31 million payout. According to reports, I’m A Celebrity... host Ant agreed to give his ex over half his estimated £50 million fortune, while also allowing her to keep their £5 million west London home and share joint custody of their dog Hurley. While Lisa is said to have signed away any rights to Ant’s future earnings, Ayesha Vardag, president of law firm Vardags and known as ‘Britain’s top divorce lawyer’, says it’s unusual for a spouse to get more than 50 per cent of their ex’s assets. “It’s interesting that Lisa got more, because the general rule is a 50/50 split,” Ayesha, who has also been dubbed ‘the diva of divorce’, exclusively tells OK! “One reason for someone getting more is if one party feels they have been responsible for the breakdown of the marriage.” She continues, “Another reason is that Ant may be optimistic he can make all his money again. It may also be that Ant didn’t want to pay ongoing maintenance, so paid to get a clean break. And, of course, it can simply be that he wanted this done, and the financial and emotional burden of going through the courts would have been greater.” While Lisa has hit out on Twitter, claiming that the reports are “not true”, Ayesha says the make-up artist will be unable to comment on the specifics of her settlement – despite allegedly not signing a confidentiality agreement. “In family cases like this, there is still an implied undertaking of confidentiality, whether there is an agreement or not,” explains Ayesha. “If you breach confidentiality, you can be in contempt of court.” Ant and Lisa famously failed to sign a prenuptial agreement before they wed in 2006, and Ayesha sees this as a lesson to us all. “Everyone, not just celebrities, should have a pre-nup,” she warns. “Otherwise you are g a blank cheque to lawyers. OPENING UP ON THEIR HOLIDAY

‘HAVING CHILDREN ISN’T GOING TO HAPPEN FOR US’

DUNCAN AND NIGORA BANNATYNE TALK TO OK!’S OLIVER GRADY ABOUT THEIR CARIBBEAN GETAWAY MARRIED LIFE AND WHY THEY’VE SHELVED THEIR DREAM OF HAVING A CHILD

B

eing around Duncan Bannatyne and his wife Nigora is a bit like being around two honeymooners. The pair may have been married for two and a half years, but when OK! joins them on their January break to Barbados, we’re struck by how madly in love with each other they are. As they stroll hand in hand along a secluded beach, the 70-year-old businessman and his former dental receptionist wife, 38, never stop smiling, constantly touching each other, and their faces light up whenever they discuss their relationship. And while the warm sunshine and white sands would put anyone in a good mood, it’s clear these two would be happy in grey skies and pouring rain if it meant they were together. It’s particularly heartening to see the former Dragons’ Den star so content, considering how, just a few years ago, his life was in tatters following an ugly divorce from his second wife, Joanne. The split saw him lose a sizeable chunk of his estimated £280 million fortune, have to restructure his health club business and, as he revealed in his 2013 autobiography, even contemplate suicide. But those dark days are long behind him and, now, dad-of-six Duncan lives the kind of life most of us would give our right arm for. He and Nigora split their time between their homes in Portugal, Monaco and Miami, where Nigora’s 17-year-old daughter Gabrielle is currently in high school, but also spend much of their time travelling and seeing the world. Chatting to us during some downtime on their idyllic holiday, the pair lift the lid on their “forever” love, their struggle to have a baby and Duncan’s next reality TV gig…

26

WWW.OK.CO.UK 27

How is your holiday in Barbados treating you? Duncan: It’s been beautiful. We’re staying at Sandy Lane hotel. It’s so romantic here, the scenery is amazing and it’s a great place to go as a couple. We’ve just spent our time sunbathing, doing watersports and we also hired a catamaran for the day. Nigora: Yes, it’s been really chilled and laid-back. There were lots of headlines about you saving somebody’s life on the beach… Duncan: We didn’t actually save anyone’s life. A couple of young boys got into trouble in the water and we could see there was an issue. As I have first aid training, I ran along to see if I could help. But the situation was already under control when we got there, so there were no heroics on my part. OK! hasn’t seen you both since you married in 2017. How are you finding married life? Duncan: It feels like we have always been married. It’s hard to remember life before. 28

Duncan: We were both probably dating other people at first. Nigora: I think he had about 20 women on the go. Duncan: Slight exaggeration, but she said, “It’s me or all of them.” She took my phone and deleted all their numbers.

Nigora: Yes, it’s been two and a half years since we got married and five years since we got together, but I feel like I have been with him forever. He is my soulmate. You certainly look like you’re still very much in the honeymoon period… Nigora: We’ve been in the honeymoon period since the day I moved in with him – within a week of getting together. I said to myself, “If it’s going to work out, it’s going to work out, and if it’s not then it is better to know sooner rather than later.” So we never really dated, we just moved in together.

What do you love about Duncan, Nigora? Oh, my goodness, what don’t I love about him? He is an amazing husband and the most kind soul I have ever met. He always thinks about everyone else and never ever puts himself first. It’s the little things – like every morning, I wake up and there is always hot water with lemon next to me. He never misses doing that. Does anything annoy you about each other? Nigora: Oh, yeah. All the time. We do have our fights. Duncan: We never go to bed on an argument though. I always say to her that I am not going to sleep until we are talking again. Nigora: He always says sorry first. The secret to a happy marriage is for men to always say

your wife is right – 99 per cent of the time he is wrong and I am right. Isn’t that right, darling? Duncan: Yes, darling [both laugh]. Does it frustrate you when people focus on your age gap? Nigora: Age doesn’t really matter to me. He has more energy than I have. I can’t keep up with him. And I think people have accepted the age difference and can see that we genuinely love each other. In the beginning we got a few trolls but now they leave us alone. Duncan: I just think Nigora is so wonderful and I don’t care what anyone else thinks. I wouldn’t be happy if she wasn’t happy. Before I met Nigora, I was going through an awful divorce and even contemplated suicide. I was miserable and then I met her and my whole world changed. If I hadn’t been through all that hell, I wouldn’t have met and married Nigora and have everything I have now. I have a greater appreciation of life now than I had before. So every cloud… One could forgive you for never wanting to get married again after what you went through with your second divorce… Duncan: Yeah, but if you want something, you have to go for it. I wanted to marry Nigora from the first moment I met her. If I had allowed my divorce to make me never trust anyone again, I would have lived a very lonely life. But Nigora is my last wife. my back, I was taking six to eight painkillers a day, so I decided to try yoga. Within two weeks, I was off the painkillers. Nigora: I have noticed such a difference in him. His pain is so much better, and he looks 20 years younger. Duncan I feel 20 years younger. I’m in better shape now than I was at 50. Do you have plans to do any more television shows? I filmed The Real Marigold Hotel for the BBC last year and that will be on soon. I wasn’t going to do any more reality TV and then I thought, “Six weeks in India, all expenses paid?” And it turned out to be such an enriching experience. It was amazing. I couldn’t do Strictly or anything like that because of my back, and my inability to understand music Do you still watch Dragons’ Den? Duncan: Occasionally, maybe once or twice a year in Portugal as we have Sky there. But it isn’t on in the States so I don’t see it when we’re in Miami. Nigora: It’s kind of boring now since Duncan left. There is no spark any more. There has been a high turnover of Dragons, too. A lot of people ask him to go back. Duncan: I would never go back. I actually should have left two years earlier than I did. I wasn’t enjoying it any more. I can’t understand why anybody would want to just continue doing it after all these series. I mean Peter [Jones] has been doing it forever.

‘WE HAVE A NICE LIFE I LOVE BEING WITH HER – EVEN WHEN WE FIGHT’

You said a few years ago that you would like to have children. Is that still something that is on the cards? Duncan: I don’t think it’s going to happen. We tried, but I don’t think we are going to have children. We’re not trying to prevent it happening, so if it did, great, but I don’t think it is going to. Nigora: If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen, but we are not doing anything about it, like IVF, and we are not going to stress about it. Gabby is going to uni and in a few years she will be having children so I also think there’s no point me starting again. I want to enjoy my life, travel and see the world. Duncan: We have a nice life as it is. I’m madly in love with my wife and just love being with her – even when we fight! You look in amazing shape for your age, Duncan. What’s that down to? Duncan: I do Iynegar yoga. A couple of years ago, I was in such pain with

Are you still involved in your business Duncan, or have you semi-retired? I am involved in it, but in a very small way. I have six directors, and I speak to them on a Monday usually and they contact me in between if there are any issues. I probably work for 10 hours a week at the most – and that’s a hard week. But I have worked hard all my life and I’m 70 years old now, so I want to be able to enjoy my life. What’s on the agenda for you both in 2020? Duncan: We’re coming back to the UK at the end of January for my brother’s birthday. Then in February, we go to the Turks and Caicos Islands on holiday, and then we head to Marrakech for Nigora’s 40th. She wants to book that one with me though, she won’t let me surprise her. SCARY SPICE SPEAKS OUT

‘AS A BROWN WOMAN I’M GUTTED ABOUT MEGXIT’ IN AN EXCLUSIVE CHAT WITH OK! MEL B SHARES HER VIEWS ON THE ROYAL DRAMA AND REVEALS HER OWN ORDEALS WITH RACISM

W

ith the debate around racism intensifying in the wake of the Duchess of Sussex stepping away from the royal family, Mel B exclusively tells OK! that she’s “gutted” about the impact of her departure. “As a brown woman, I’m totally gutted by Megxit!” the Spice Girl reveals. “When Harry met Meghan, I was delighted because finally a brown girl would be part of the royal family and it just showed how far our country has come as a multicultural nation. But less than two years after marrying him, they’ve both quit the royal family and the country. I’m totally gutted because the reports say they both felt she had been treated in a racist way.” Mel says much of her frustration comes from the fact that she too has experienced racism first hand, but believes Meghan walking away is a wasted opportunity. “I was one of the very first mixed race girls in a British pop band and of course I had to put up with a ton of racist abuse. When I moved into my mansion in Marlow, I had letters pushed through the door worthy of the Ku Klux Klan. But I’d had insults all my Mel B met Prince Harry life and I thought with the Spice Girls in 1997 it was more important to show difference and diff d now th thatt opportunity is gone. what I could do You have to stick things out, no matter how and stand up for who I am rather than moan tough they get because that’s the only way about it or quit being with the girls. I loved you really prove who you are.” doing what I loved.” The mum-of-three continues, “I’m fully And while Mel is quick to point out that aware that as a mixed race girl in the Spice she is “not comparing being a Spice Girl Girls I stood for all other brown kids in with being in the royal family”, she strongly Britain. A few days later, our gig – in front of Prince Charles and Harry – was one of the biggest concerts they’d ever had in South Africa and it was all over the TV. It gave me great pleasure to think of that shop assistant seeing the girl she’d kicked out of her shop, laughing and talking with Prince Charles and Harry. At the time, Harry had a total crush on Emma which made us all giggle.” Mel also shared with OK! how things have been going since she relocated to the UK, revealing how she has gained over a stone recently but is happy with her curves. “I have put on 15lb because I’ve been relaxing and eating and having anything I fancied over Christmas,” she says. “It’s no big deal because I have no problem with being curvier and I’m excited to start going back to the gym and whipping myself back into shape.” She added that she’s also “completely addicted to Love Island” – thanks to bandmate Geri Horner. “It’s all Ginger’s fault,” Mel laughs. “I’d never got into it until I went to stay with her one weekend and she kept disappearing every night with her daughter, Bluebell, to watch it. I then watched every single episode on catch up and now I can’t function if I don’t know what’s going on. I’m obsessed!” OK!

AHEAD OF THE NTAs

‘IF WE WIN WE’LL GO TOPLESS!’

THE LOOSE WOMEN OPEN UP TO OK!’S PADRAIG PRENDERGAST ABOUT USING THEIR VOICES FOR GOOD AND WHAT THEY SMUGGLE INTO THE NTAs

W

hen OK! caught up with the stars of Loose Women, we were ecstatic as they opened the doors to give us an exclusive look behind the scenes of the iconic show ahead of this year’s National Television Awards. As always, we were made to feel right at home by panellists Christine Lampard, Stacey Solomon, Carol McGiffin and Brenda Edwards. As the only female-led TV panel show and having celebrated their 20-year milestone last year, the stars are hopeful for the NTAs next week, so much so, they’re planning to get naked if Loose Women wins! Here, they lift the lid on what they sneak into the awards ceremony and whether there’ll be a Loose Women wedding on the horizon... How much do you want to beat This Morning to win the Most Popular Live Magazine Show Award? Carol: That’s our raison d’être. Stacey: It’s not about beating This Morning. We put so much into this show year after year, so we would love to win it because we deserve it. We

34

are unique. We are the only female panel show that gives our lives away. Christine has predicted we will win. She’s like a witch. Christine: It’s been a long time coming after 10 years and we have such huge support from our viewers. We want to share it with them especially in our 20th year on air. What would you do if you won? Would you present naked?! Christine: Phil and Holly pulled an all nighter. We’ll do one better and pull two all nighters. Do it naked? That would benefit nobody. Stacey: I think we’d lose viewers if we did it naked. Brenda: If we win, we’d go topless. Carol: Don’t go topless without me, I won’t be there, I’m on holiday. Christine: I am not going topless! [Everyone laughs]. w How important is your role to show others your imperfections? Stacey: We don’t take our positions e lightly. We feel huge privilege to have a voice and a platform to speak aboutt issues we feel passionately about and

Brenda does her own make-up for the show

Loose Women gives us that. Everything we talk about is real life. Stacey, will there be a Loose Women wedding soon? You have your bridesmaids ready here... Stacey: It’s not a thing we are thinking about at the moment. We’re so grateful to have four children and we’re really happy as we are. Carol: The people want a wedding. Stacey: I will have the day. There was speculation last year when Joe wore rings, but he has worn those rings for 15 years. They’re his dad’s rings – his dad passed away when he was really young. I love Joe and we’re really content at the moment. Brenda, you’re the only one who does her own make-up... Brenda: Yes! I find it quite therapeutic. It’s my face and if I want to change my mind and do my eyebrows differently, I can. You have to do your own make-up working in the West End.

What’s the best thing about being on Loose Women? Carol: The free clothes. [The deputy editor in the room shakes his head]. I was joking. Hanging out with other women, of course.

Who takes the longest to get ready? Stacey, Carol and Christine: Not me! Brenda: I’m about an hour. Stacey: I actually do some make-up on the way in before I even get to the studio.

If you could have a dream panellist to join you, who would it be? Christine: Dolly Parton. Stacey: Oprah Winfrey. Carol: For me, Posh Spice. She watches so we need her. Come on, Victoria!

Who’s the quickest to lose their cool? Stacey: Janet, but in a good way. You know what you’re going to get. As I get older I want to be more like Janet.

If you were stranded on a desert island which Loose Woman would you bring? Stacey: Janet [Street-Porter]. She can get you out of any situation. Brenda: She is quite resourceful. In a crisis, everybody needs a Janet. Stacey: She will know one of the tribal people, she knows everyone. [Does impression of Janet] “Well, I actually know the boss of this island.” She even eats roadkill!

Who’s the naughtiest? Stacey: Kaye [Adams] and Christine. They are dark horses. Oh, and Nadia [Sawalha]. Christine: Yes! I’m pleased with that. What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you on Loose Women? Christine: Frank [Lampard] married Janet to herself. He had to get ordained and everything. Stacey: We married rabbits on the show, too. Who’s the most fun on a night out? Stacey: Carol, Christine and Brenda. Brenda is mad on a night out. Brenda: I’m a right laugh on a night out. If you’re going to go out, you’ve got to go all out. Carol: When we’re all out together, we get mad and sing on the tables drunk. Stacey: There’s no food at the NTAs so instead of smuggling in a hip flask, I smuggle in Marmite sandwiches for everyone and we eat them in our gowns. OK! VISIT NATIONALTVAWARDS.COM/ VOTE. ‘I’LL CRY WHEN EMILIE LEAVES’

OUR COLUMNIST ON HER ELDEST DAUGHTER MOVING OUT SCOTT BEING HOME AND GWYNETH PALTROW’S INTERESTING NEW SCENTED CANDLE

I

’ve been helping my daughter Emilie, 23 (left), get her new house ready. She’s hoping to move into it at the end of the month with her partner Mikey and my gorgeous eight-monthold grandson Teddy. I know I’m going to cry. She’s never left home before and it’s really scary. At 43 I think I’m still a fairly young woman but this makes me feel old! Thankfully, I made peace with the likelihood of becoming a grandparent in my forties because I had my children young and it’s lovely that I have the energy to enjoy Teddy. Polly (left) has settled really well into her new school, where Emilie used to go. It was Polly’s decision to switch because since we’ve moved house the journey to her old school had become a drag. She was quite nervous and woke me five times the night before her first day but she’s made lots of friends already. She’s also started singing lessons which she’s loving. Scott and I have spent every single minute together since he’s been home In fact our love is stronger than ever. We went

The internet is a wonderful place but dangerous and weird too. I’ve never regretted showing images of Polly online but people steal her photos and make strange accounts which is unsettling and you get the odd nasty comment. By the way, I heard that Rochelle’s sister is on Love Island. I don’t watch the show I’m afraid but I know it’s really popular.

It’s good she’s unashamed about women’s bodies but I think it’s just a shock tactic to get people talking about Goop. And it’s worked, hasn’t it?! I finally gave Scott his Christmas presents this week – an iPod touch, clothes and a washbag. No candles! Boring maybe, but practical. OK!

Scott’s only 31 but he wants to be part of Teddy’s life and wants Teddy to see him as his grandparent so we call Scott “Pops” to go with my nickname “Lolly”. I think it suits him.

COOKING UP A STORM

‘I HAVE DIVORCE FATIGUE I JUST WANT IT OVER WITH!’ AFTER SPLITTING FROM PAUL ALEX HOLLYWOOD TELLS OK!’S PADRAIG PRENDERGAST SHE’LL BE KEEPING HER SURNAME AND WHY SHE HAS NO REGRETS

D

ivorce is never an easy journey for any family. There’s often hurt and anguish, and Alex Hollywood’s very public split from ex-husband Paul is no different. Despite the heartache after their 20-year marriage came to an end two years ago after Great British Bake Off star Paul had an affair, Alex has handled everything life has thrown at her with dignity and decorum. “I have come through everything and come out the other side. I know who I am,” she says. While Alex, 56, prepares a four-course banquet fit for the Queen, OK! joins her in the Kent home she shares with her son Joshua, 18, to talk about why 2020 is her year, moving on and why she

42

is adamant she’ll be keeping her Hollywood surname... Have you been dating since your split from Paul? Dating? [Laughs]. It’s different when you’re my age. I’m not properly divorced yet so I want to get that over with first. Pity the poor chap who did ask me out. He’d be inundated with, “Oh, you’re Alex Hollywood’s new man.” I have divorce fatigue. I just want it over so I can reassess how I’m going to live my life and find out who I want to be. Will the divorce be finalised in 2020? It’s coming to an end now, though there will always be speculation while things rumble on.

What’s it like having your life played out in the press? It’s tough, but when Paul and I started out, we were a team. I didn’t know his actions would lead us to where we are now. I’ve been asked many times about his affair. I don’t want to go into great detail and talk about it because it did break my marriage. Paul had an affair. I’m getting a divorce and I have cited adultery and he has accepted it. There’s no two ways about it and it’s really sad. I just want to put it to bed. Alex and Paul were married for 20 years 44

Up until that point, did you have a good marriage? When Paul and I first came back from Cyprus [where they met], we literally had £1,000 and

a suitcase. We worked hard together and as a result of that, Paul got The Great British Bake Off and did really well. Through hard graft from both of us, he got to the point where he was so big with Bake Off and now it’s my time to shine. I’m not saying I don’t wish him well, I really hope that he will find happiness. Do you regret marrying Paul? I wouldn’t change a thing because I have my son Joshua. It’s been a journey and life is an experience and you take the good with the bad. Would I have done anything differently? No. I made a choice and I stuck by it. I always believe you shouldn’t regret anything. I made the right choice

at the time, and at the end of the day, you need to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say, “I’ve done the right thing.” Will you be keeping the Hollywood surname, Alex? I’m not divorcing my son, so of course I’m keeping my surname. I have been Alex Hollywood for 20 years, so I’m keeping it – 20 years is a long time and I have grown into that. I don’t care if people say, “She’s using it for this or that.” I have come through everything and come out the other side. I know who I am. I am Alex Hollywood. WWW.OK.CO.UK 45

Your son must love it when he brings his friends round. Do you cook for them? I think he does, bless him. I have one boy and it’s wonderful when he brings his friends round. I never know how many he’s got crashing out here. I’d rather cook for them here than have them go somewhere else because it means he’s here with me. He’s off to university in September… I am so proud of him. I told him, “This is where your life starts, a wonderful sheet of blank A4 paper. You can do what you want, you can go where you want and be what you want. Just go do it and don’t be afraid. The worse that can happen is you fail at something, but it doesn’t matter.” I am really excited about him going. I mean, it’s going to be massive for him not to be here. But he will be coming back, if not just to eat! How did you discover your love of food? I was a chalet girl for years in my twenties. I loved it. Having people turn up for lunch and cooking for them gave me a really good grounding. After that, I moved into hotel and restaurant PR which is where I met Paul. Once we were married, I worked more behind the WWW.OK.CO.UK 47

scenes writing articles, assisting on books and formulating recipes for programmes. I only started writing my own books about six years ago. Where do you get your inspiration for your recipes? When you love food and cook, you don’t actually cook by recipes. Some of the best recipes are done with whatever you have left in the fridge or cupboard. But I do get inspiration from friends’ dinners, restaurants and when I travel. I was skiing with my son in Italy recently and we were trying all these different foods in these little mountain refuges in the middle of nowhere and I was thinking, “I have got to make this when I get home!” Who taught you to cook? My mother, grandmother and father were all completely obsessed with food. Holidays were based on where we were going to eat. We were lucky that in the summer we had a little house in Spain. We would drive there as we couldn’t afford to fly, so everything would be packed in the car. My father would stop and try wines on the way while my mother headed to the markets. We would just stop and eat. I’ve got pictures of me in fields with baguettes and cheeses and all sorts of things. For me, food has always been part of my life. OK! James was shouting in pain and called it “horrendous”. Some men think it’s easy and that kidney stones are more painful, but Pete has had kidney stones and he said labour was much worse so I always use that against him! James is expecting a baby girl with his wife Ola after they underwent IVF treatment. They revealed that they didn’t tell gg g their parents they were struggling to conceive and I think that’s understandable. Fertility struggles can be seen as a taboo subject while getting pregnant is seen as an expected part of life’s journey, but it doesn’t always work like that. I’m so happy for them both.

getting enough protein as it’s more difficult to absorb protein from plant-based food. There is also a risk of deficiencies such as vitamin B12, calcium, zinc and iron. It’s possible to counteract the risk by taking supplements, but for me I’m happy to carry on as normal with the kids. I try to make sure they have a balanced diet and they never have processed meat and we rarely eat red meat. I made a cake for Millie’s sixth birthday from scratch [right] and Pete said I should go on The Great British Bake Off! I would definitely consider it as I love the show but I don’t think I’m good enough! I’m good at cakes but I’d be a let down when it came to making pastries and bread! Millie and Theo are the best of friends and they’re going to be sharing a room soon, probably in the next six months. It’s always been the plan as I think it’s nice for them to have company and I shared a room with my brother until I was 10. We’re not sure if we’re going to turn the spare room into anything yet.

here have been discussions over whether the Canadian government should pay for security for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex while they’re living in the country. I think a lot of people will feel this should be their own responsibility as they can’t have it both ways if they want to become financially independent. But it’s a difficult debate. I think their p back from the roy yal familyy is a decision to step royal real shame but we need to respect it. We don’t know the full story behind their decision, and I’m sure it wasn’t easy. PUTTING HIS NERVES TO ONE SIDE

‘I’LL TASER A CELEB IF THEIR SPEECH GOES ON TOO LONG!’ FUNNYMAN DAVID WALLIAMS OPENS UP TO OK!’S KAT ROMERO ABOUT TAKING OVER AS HOST OF THE NATIONAL TELEVISION AWARDS AND WHY HE’S GOING TO RUN A TIGHT SHIP…

I

t takes a brave man to step into Dermot O’Leary’s shoes as host of the National Television Awards after 10 years, but David Walliams assures OK! he’s up to the task. “You’ve just got to do the best you can do and I want to make people laugh,” he says. The comedian and Britain’s Got Talent judge is famed for his quick wit and outlandish personality, but he admits he suffers with his nerves ahead of live TV. “I’ve just got to relax and try to enjoy myself,” he says. As well as his presenting duties, David may be one of the evening’s winners as he’s up for the coveted prize of Best TV Judge – something he has already won in 2015, 2018 and 2019. David admits winning the award for a fourth time would be a great achievement to rub in the face of his BGT boss Simon Cowell, who is also nominated. He adds, “He’s generally very competitive with me and he will not be happy if I win it!” Here, David, 48, opens up about feeling like a rock star and why he’ll take no prisoners if award speeches go on too long... How do you feel about stepping into Dermot’s shoes as the NTAs host? It’s daunting because Dermot is a skilled and proper presenter, unlike me. I’m sure people are going to have strong opinions on me hosting and not be afraid to air them. But I want to make it funny and be a bit silly. I’ve just got to do the best I can.

Has Dermot given you tips? Yeah, and I’ve spent time watching him and how he does it. I’ve always thought he seems very relaxed, which seems mad because he’s presenting in front of 10,000 people. But he’s told me he’s always concentrating on delivering to the TV camera at home and not the whole big audience, which I think is quite smart because you can’t be shouting to the person 200 rows back!

David says he still gets starstruck seeing Simon!

You seem so confident on BGT but do you get nervous in front of a live audience? Yeah, I always do, but you just have to control it and try not to let nerves affect you.

You’re up for the Best TV Judge award alongside Simon Cowell. How would it feel to beat him again? Oh, it would be wonderful and a really nice thing to rub in his face. He’s generally very competitive with me and he will not be happy if I win it. The thing with Simon is, you won’t get him to awards unless you give him one. I hope he’s there on the night. I need someone to make fun of. But honestly, it would be the best thing if I actually give myself an award [laughs]. Ant and Dec seem like they’re set to win the Best Presenter Award for the 19th year running. Have you learnt any presenting tips from them? Well, they are the masters of their art. They go beyond being popular. We were filming in Manchester recently and I went out with them and there wasn’t a single person we passed who didn’t want to meet them and have a picture. Everyone feels like they know them and they’re best mates with them.

Are you a big fan of TV yourself? I watch the news. Although I think I should adopt Simon Cowell’s philosophy of shunning it for cartoons. The news is so depressing. When I have my son with me, we watch things like Scooby-Doo. As for shows like Love Island, I’m aware of them but I don’t think I could give that many hours of my life to a TV show. People get very addicted and feel bereft when it’s over.

Piers Morgan said he might boycott the show if Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield win the Best Daytime Programme Award again. Do you think he’s being a bit of a bad sport? I think he’s always got something to say about something, hasn’t he? How much beauty preparation will you do to ensure you look your best on the night? You can’t improve perfection! Actually I feel lucky in that way because I’m not really judged on how I look. I notice it when we’re doing Britain’s Got Talent – there’s definitely more pressure on Amanda [Holden] and Alesha [Dixon] to look super glamorous. The NTAs are notoriously star-studded. Do you ever get starstruck? Yes, always. I get starstruck seeing Simon Cowell, even though I’ve seen him the day before. I remember interviewing the fashion designer Tom Ford and asking him if he ever got starstruck and he said, “No, they’re just people.” Which is true. Apart from Simon. He’s not human. Will you be cut-throat if someone’s acceptance speech goes on too long? I’ll taser them! [Laughs] It’s the only way, then they can be carried off... OK! HITTING THE ROAD

GOING ON TOUR WITH STRICTLY

OK!’S JOSIE COPSON MEETS THE STARS OF STRICTLY COME DANCING AS THEY GET GLAMMED UP TO LAUNCH THEIR LIVE TOUR

O

utside it may be a drab and dull January day, but inside the Arena Birmingham it couldn’t be more sparkly. That’s because some of our favourite celebrities from Strictly Come Dancing 2019 and their professional dance partners have taken the show on the road, and OK! was invited along to the launch. Leading the pack is winner Kelvin Fletcher, who is still processing his shock triumph. “It’s just started to sink in,” the former Emmerdale actor tells OK!. The hunky star even impresses the pack of paparazzi who are flashing their bulbs at him at the side of the stage. “Looking rugged, mate,” shouts one man in a deep voice. “I do my best,” he replies.

54

Of course Kelvin, who won with Oti Mabuse, has one person in particular to thank for his success. After Jamie Laing injured his foot and was forced to pull out of the show, Kelvin stepped in. We suggest that perhaps Kelvin, 35, should buy Jamie a drink, to which he replies, “Yeah, I should do that. I will!” There’s one big difference for Kelvin on the tour, and that’s his dance partner. As Oti is busy filming The Greatest Dancer, Kelvin is paired up with Janette Manrara. Despite the change of partner, Kelvin says he’s taking it all in his stride, explaining, “It was organic that Janette and I started dancing together because we had already gelled. Oti is one of my best mates, too, so we talk almost every day. It’s all good!”

Kelvin won’t just be missing Oti while he’s on tour, as he’ll be away from wife Liz Marsland and their children Marnie, three, and Milo, one. “I find it hard to be away from the young ones like most working parents, but it’s a great opportunity to be able to dance in front of thousands of people,” he says. And with his profile soaring, he’s already thinking about his next move. “I should do a singing show! I love musical theatre and the West End, but TV and drama are where my biggest aspirations lie.” Putting on revealing outfits so soon after Christmas can be a nightmare for some of us – and it’s no different for the stars. Catherine Tyldesley tells us she prewarned her dance partner/BFF Johannes Radebe. “I texted him

Catherine, 36, is looking forward to having someone special in the audience during the tour – her fouryear-old son Alfie with husband Tom Pitford. Alfie wasn’t able to watch the live TV shows due to age restrictions. While the former Coronation Street actress is busy with the tour right now, she’s planning something rather special when things slow down. “We would love a second baby when the time is right, but I’m very busy now – I’m booked until spring! There’s also a few interesting scripts on my desk at the minute.” Her close relationship with Johannes, 32, means that he could not only be a dance partner, but also be enlisted as her birthing partner when the time comes. “My husband has got PTSD from the last birth so I’ve said, ‘It’s fine, I’ll take Jojo!’” History was made this series of Strictly when Johannes performed the first same-sex routine with Graziano Di Prima much to viewers’ delight. “It was incredible and the fact I got to do it with my best friend was absolutely gorgeous,” says Graziano. “We’re living in progressive times, and I’m happy to be part of that change. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’ll get there.” He also praises ITV for the partnership between Matt Evers and Ian ‘H’ Watkins on Dancing On Ice. “What they are doing is beautiful, and anyone who watches their performances will realise it is time.” Graziano, 25, is filling the ballroom shoes of Anton Du Beke and partnering with finalist Emma Barton. “Not many of the girls can say they have had two lovely partners, so it’s really nice,” Emma tells OK!. Graziano adds, “The only tip that Anton gave me was to just enjoy every second because Emma is brilliant. He was right.” Emma, 42, was the celebrity who helped Anton earn his first ever 10 scores after 15 years on the show, with the pair just missing out on the Glitterball trophy. “To get to where we did, I was just so happy. More for him than myself,” she tells OK!. 56

While she looks incredible on the dancefloor, Emma is looking forward to returning to the Minute Mart in Albert Square. “I miss EastEnders, but I still watch it. I’ll be back in the tabard as Honey soon!” she says. Also dusting off her dance shoes is social media sensation Saffron Barker, who is partnered with AJ Pritchard. The two have experienced a Freaky Fridaystyle job switch after spending many hours in a training room together. “He’s become a vlogger and I’ve become a dancer,” Saffron laughs. The pair will be working together to make sure what happens on tour doesn’t stay on tour. “I’m definitely going to be vlogging backstage and AJ will be a big part of that. He get’s no choice!” she says. Saffron, 19, credits the show for introducing her to a new audience. “When I’m out, it’s a whole different

demographic that comes up to me now. Before, the people were around my age, but now I get my nan’s friends coming up to me,” she tells OK!. BBC sports presenter Mike Bushell also has a lot to thank Strictly for. “It’s changed my life massively,” he says. “I’m physically stronger, mentally sharper and I’m even walking around in a different way. It’s been transformative.” The 54-year-old continues, “I went running with my wife Emily. I was faster and not even out of breath, whereas six months ago people would have thought she was my personal trainer.” It turns out Mike and dance partner Katya Jones have continued their friendship outside the show too. “I went over to his house and brought my dog Crumble, and we went in the hot tub,” Katya reveals. “That’s the great thing about Strictly – it’s the afterlife as well. I get on with his whole family, including his three daughters.” Rounding off what is sure to be an unforgettable show, finalists Karim Zeroual and Amy Dowden, and Alex Scott and Neil Jones have also signed up for the tour. And this year also features a blast from the past as 2018 champion Stacey Dooley will be using her hosting skills to keep things on track, taking over the reins from fellow former winner Ore Oduba. ‘I SLEEP WITH A TOY BUNNY WHICH MY HUSBAND THINKS IS SUPER WEIRD’

BOMBSHELL STAR AND TWO-TIME OSCAR NOMINEE MARGOT ROBBIE OPENS UP ABOUT CONQUERING HOLLYWOOD FINDING HER VOICE AND WHY SHE LOVES BEING MARRIED

F

ew people have nailed the transition from soap star to Hollywood superstar as successfully as Margot Robbie. The former Neighbours actress, 29, has come a long way since her Erinsborough days and that was never more evident than when she landed her second Oscar nomination in three years for her latest movie, Bombshell. The empowering femaledominated film, which also stars Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman, revolves around three women at Fox News who exposed CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. While we’ll have to wait until 9 February to see whether Margot takes home the Best Supporting Actress statuette (she was previously nominated for Best Actress for I, Tonya in 2018), win or lose, she’s still got plenty to smile about. Her career is going from strength to strength. Next up, she’s reprising her role as Suicide Squad’s villainous Harley Quinn in spin-off Birds Of Prey and she’s been announced as the lead in the upcoming Barbie movie. She also recently celebrated three years of marriage to husband Tom Ackerley. Here, Margot spills the beans on her meteoric rise, married life and the cute companion who shares her marital bed, much to her hubby’s dismay... You’ve quickly become one of Hollywood’s elite. What’s the secret to your success? I’ve been working for more than a decade as an actor.

It still does feel quick, but I got my first role in Neighbours when I was 17 and I’m much older now. I think it’s been about putting one foot in front of the other and trying to keep moving forward. Along the way, there were many moments when the easy decision would have been a lateral move and it would have been quite comforting and nice to make that easy decision. But I tried to stay on track of moving forward. I’d think, “Okay, if it’s

not moving me on, then I’m not doing it.” I’ve always tried to keep an eye on the big picture. What surprised you the most about Hollywood when you first made the move to California? I guess I was surprised by how different it was to Australia, but the most surprising thing was when I first walked on set and there was one of those director chairs with my name on the back of it. I flipped out! I was like, “This is the coolest thing. Is it a joke or something?” They were like, “No, it’s written into everyone’s contracts. It’s a union rule to have your own chair with your name on it.” That’s really cool, because everyone gets to take the back of the chair home after each job. What’s the biggest misconception people have about you? That I spend all my time sitting on a yacht or at a fancy party. I wish! It’s the funniest thing, because making films is the least glamorous thing ever. For the most part, you’re sitting in a car park and you only have portaloos. There’s nothing glamorous about it. I think people have this idea that making movies is often done in a gorgeous studio where you have a latte in your hand and you swan around to parties afterwards, but that’s not true.

Margot recently celebrated three years of marriage with Tom

How much has married life changed you? I love being married. Married life is great, but not much has changed. When WWW.OK.CO.UK 59

Tom and I met, we were best friends and we were roommates. Now we’re married, but we’re still best friends and roommates, so it’s pretty much the same. Is your character in your new movie Bombshell based on a real person? Kayla is a fictional character, but she’s an amalgamation of women who have worked at Fox News who can’t come forward to tell these stories themselves, or who have already come forward with testimonies that are on public record. It has been an incredible privilege to get to tell these women’s stories. I hope other people who feel like they perhaps can’t come forward find some solace or reckoning in watching [this movie].

Margot with her Bombshell co-stars Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman

What has playing this role made you think about in your own life? It has definitely made me think about power. You get to a certain place in your career and you suddenly have a power and an influence. When you know you can do something, it’s important to check yourself and think, “How am I using this power that I have? Am I doing something with it and am I being wise with it?” I think it’s important to recognise that you don’t have to have a huge amount of power to make a difference, because you have a voice and you can do something. I love the fact that women are now going to marches, voting and educating themselves on issues. Women are talking to their friends about things that have happened, or believing their friends. I think that with any bit of power you have, if you use it wisely, it can make a difference. Your upcoming movie, Birds Of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn, is also a movie about female empowerment. Didn’t you develop that yourself? After I finished Suicide Squad, I felt like there was still so much to be explored with the character and I was keen to do that. I wanted to see her with a bit of a girl gang, so I went away and developed a story with a writer and that was how this movie came about. In real life, I have so many groups of girl friends that are like my girl gang and I rarely see that depicted on screen. I wanted to see a group of women come together and kicking ass. It must feel very cool to be a toy… It was quite mindboggling when they said they were making a Harley Quinn action figure. That was really bizarre for me. Most of the time, we see guy characters as action figures, but it’s great that we have a female there, too. It’s cool and it’s a great honour to play a female character like that. g up, p what was your favourite toy? Growing Embarrassingly enough, I still have a bunny that was given to me when I was born. Bunny Honey is her name, because when you’re young, you get really creative with names. She’s the same age as me and she has to come with me everywhere. I still sleep with Bunny Honey, which my husband obviously thinks is super weird. OK!

We both love being in the kitchen and you will quite often find that we just end up cooking together. Would you ever give Veganuary a go in your house? This lilac dress from Welsh designer Julien Macdonald’s upcoming Spring/Summer 2020 collection was our favourite of the night. It oozes old school glamour and the British actress adopted the exaggerated one-shoulder trend with ease. WWW.OK.CO.UK 71

LAURA DERN

Orange is the new black for Laura. The fussfree silhouette and minimal accessories make this Emilia Wickstead gown a tangerine dream.

CHARLIZE THERON Charlize looked sensational in custom-made Celine. In this embellished floor-length gown topped off with a tuxedo-style blazer and cool pixie crop, she is the epitome of a blonde bombshell. 72

SAOIRSE RONAN Proving she is ahead of the fashion curve, the petite Irish actress chose to wear one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s go-to designers, Erdem. Featuring a high neck, puff sleeves and a toile du jouy floral print, it isn’t a dress for wallflowers but this leading lady pulls it off.

FLORENCE PUGH

British star Florence continued to show off her red carpet style credentials at the awards. The bejewelled Prada gown, dripping in oversized sequins and beads is totally droolworthy. Red carpet frocks don’t come much better than this.

PHOEBE WALLER-BRIDGE

There are no flies, or should we say fleas, on this lady. Taking a classic approach to red carpet dressing, the award-winning actress and writer opted for dreamy Dior. The couture creation, with its structured corset and voluminous tulle skirt is a cooler nod to the princess ball gown. A sheer delight. OK! WORDS: FASHION EDITOR LAUREN GOODWINGRAFTON PHOTOS: GETTY

A

fter being crowned Queen of the Jungle, Jacqueline Jossa has kicked off 2020 with a romantic trip to Dubai with her husband Dan Osborne. The couple jetted to their “favourite place” for some quality time together following a busy Christmas with their children, Ella, four, and Mia, one, as well as Dan’s six-year-old son Teddy from a previous relationship. A source told OK!, “After the craziness of the jungle, Jacqueline and Dan wanted to have a holiday and spend some time together. They were able to start the year with something fun.” The pair put on a united front as they enjoyed a loved-up dinner and a picturesque boat trip and put rumours of Dan’s alleged infidelity, which emerged during Jacqueline’s time on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, fully behind them. The source continued, “They had an amazing time. There were no showdown talks or anything like that. Dubai is their

from their luxury boat trip as he gushed about his “long weekend away with my wife”, while Jacqueline posted a picture of them at dinner with the caption “2020”. Just before the former EastEnders actress won the ITV show, reports emerged that Dan had allegedly engaged in a threesome with his former Celebrity Big Brother co-stars Natalie Nunn and Chloe Ayling, in 2018. At the same time, Jacqueline questioned her campmate Myles Stephenson over claims something had happened between Dan and Myles’ ex-girlfriend Gabby Allen. Dan referenced the “rumours” in an Instagram post in December and called some of them “true” and some “very untrue” as he made a public apology to his wife. The post read, “I want to publicly say, I know I have made mistakes, we all do as humans, but I’ve made some that have almost cost me my family. I have seriously learnt from these massively, so I want to publicly apologise to my beautiful wife and my family for the mistakes I’ve made.” The couple are now concentrating on the

BACK WITH A NEW PROJECT

‘THE FIERY RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE GOOD ONES’ THE LIBERTINES STAR CARL BARAT ON KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY…

R

ock‘n’roll runs through the veins of sibling duo Lucie and Carl Barât, so joining forces on their latest project, The Heartless, was a no brainer. The TV show follows a band of the same name and is loosely based on their own experiences. Carl shot to fame as one quarter of indie band The Libertines with Pete Doherty. The pair’s often turbulent relationship is well documented, but having put the past behind them, The Libs spent the end of last year on tour – much to their fans’ delight. Here, we catch up with Carl, who has sons Eli, nine, and Ramone, five, with fiancée Edie Langley, to chat about his work and being in “dad mode”...

What is The Heartless? The Heartless is a band and a TV show about the band, set in the early 2000s, before the internet. It’s about young musicians finding their way. The show is my sister’s baby – she’s the best.

The Heartless will be on our screens soon

H h off your own How much experience did you put into it? My sister’s telling the story, but I’m in that story. She wrote it and I’m writing the music with her. It’s semi autobiographical. I lived in a flat with my sister when my band was taking off, so there are parallels. Do you and Lucie ever row? I love working with her. But we have our differences and our relationship can get a bit fiery. That’s been my professional life with creative partnerships. The fiery ones are the good ones – harder to maintain but the products are always good. Like The Libertines... You could say that, yeah. The Heartless is fronted by Ellie James. Was it a conscious choice to have a female lead singer? Yeah. We wanted to support current issues. And if we hadn’t, everyone would think it’s about The Libertines.

Carl with sister Lucie

84

Has the music industry changed? There’s a certain romance and nostalgia for that time [2000s],

when you went up and down the street putting flyers up trying to get everyone to your gig. So many of the old venues have gone. Social media has changed everything. Back then, you wanted to get signed and get a record deal. It works in a different way now. How is touring life different for you now you’re a dad? On tour I’m not quite in dad mode, or quite as squeaky clean. Actually this tour has been a dry tour, which is the first time I’ve ever done that. I mean, the last tour was quite the opposite! But don’t write about us getting old [laughs]. Tours are still pretty mental.

The Libertines fans are so invested in your relationship with Pete. How would you describe your friendship? I guess we’re like brothers really – sometimes more. Our chemistry and bond is so tight that we’ve endured everything you can throw at a band and we’ve still come out strong and together. Try as we might, we can’t pull apart, and when we try and break up it doesn’t work. When you finally stop fighting it and realise that, it’s a beautiful thing. OK! eed to take your mind off the January blues? Then head to Stratford-Upon-Avon to see David Walliams’ book The boy In The Dress transformed into a musical extravaganza. It tells the story of 12-year-old school footballing hero Dennis, who quite likes wearing dresses in his spare time, and what happens when everyone finds out. The songs are written by Robbie Williams and will have you singing all the way home. The jokes about growing up with teenagers and who fancies who are spot on too because they make mums and dads laugh as well as the kids. For us, that made the outing a complete success.

S

he may have only celebrated her 30th birthday last year, but Rochelle Humes has a pretty impressive list of achievements. If having a successful hosting career on Ninja Warrior and nabbing one of the hottest gigs on This Morning wasn’t enough, Rochelle also juggles that with being a mum to Alaia-Mai, six, and Valentina, two, her daughters with her JLS singer husband Marvin. And the star isn’t planning to slow down anytime soon. In fact, 2020 is set to be even busier for the former The Saturdays singer. Taking time out of her busy schedule to talk to OK! about her 10th New Look edit launching this month, Rochelle also fills us in on why she’s been scarred from sale shopping and why she wasn’t up for doing Dry January this year... We saw that you celebrated New Year in the Maldives, how was your sunny break? It was so nice and relaxing. We’re so lucky. The Maldives is just paradise, it’s like a postcard. It’s the only place you can really switch off from everything. How did you feel getting into swimwear after indulging over the festive period? That’s the only thing with going away after Christmas, when you’re like “Woah, I’m on a beach after all those roast potatoes!” Hence the black swimsuit and me not wearing a bikini! It’s a good little classic black swimsuit, the LBD of swimsuits – it’s not part of my latest edit but I’ll definitely be adding swimwear into my summer edit. What can we expect from the new collection? My January edit is more about the New Year and thinking about the classic staples you might need in your wardrobe. There are less party pieces in there and more practical wear for every day.

Do you prefer dressing casual or looking glamorous? I’m lucky with what I do that I can do a bit of both. At this time of year, you’ve done so many parties that everyone is on that January detox. Not only with health, but with styling too which is nice after dressing up all the time. I like to be chilled but not too chilled. Do you have a favourite piece from the edit? The faux suede khaki trench – I absolutely love it. It feels incredible and it looks great with jeans. Do you like shopping in the January sales? I don’t like to go out and shop in them that much as I find it a bit overwhelming as it’s so busy – it scares me. I used to be that person whose mum made them get up on Boxing Day, and she’d be like “Come on, let’s hit the sales.” I think she has traumatised me. My mum used to queue outside the shops on Boxing Day! So would your top tip be to snap up the bargains online? Yes, but I’m a ‘save the high street’ person – it’s just the Christmas sales that frighten me. I like to get the kids’ clothes in the sales because they just grow so quickly. I bought a lot of their holiday clothes in the summer sales. I try to be smart and plan ahead as you struggle to find swimwear before a Christmas holiday. Now Alaia-Mai is six, has she ? become more aware of fashion? Yes, she absolutely loves it! She just piles everything on at once, we haven’t mastered the ‘less is more’ concept yet. She’ll have sunglasses on with a hat and glitter. She wants to be a living unicorn, I think that’s her goal. g What are your must-have spring wardrobe staples? The key buy for me is a shacket – I’m obsessed with the shirt meets jacket kind of thing. You can wear it as a shirt or with a top underneath, or even with a hoodie, especially for spring when it’s not that cold so you don’t want a big coat or heavy jacket. Is there anyone you take style inspiration from? My friends are really good at dressing, especially my best friend. She is very stylish. But my go-to

girl for inspiration would be model Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley. She’s phenomenal. Do you and your sisters or friends steal each other’s clothes? Having been in a girlband before, we used to constantly ask to borrow each other’s clothes so I’m used to it. But my friends and family, and nieces in particular, are a nightmare because if they’ve seen me wear it on TV, they say, “You’ve worn this, you’re not going to wear it for a while, are you?” They understand the process now.

I said I was going to do it and then, for my 30th last year, my best friend booked me a trip to Paris this month so I thought I’m not going to go there and not drink – that’s just really dull. What about Marvin? He says he wants to lose his Christmas stomach. He’s just taken up running. We’ve got a dog so when he takes her out he runs at the same time. What do you hope 2020 will bring? I’m hoping My Little Coco takes off and I’d really like the world to calm down a little bit. Everything just seems negative and we are barely into January. oor old summer gets a bad reputation when it comes to skincare. We’re constantly hearing how sun exposure is the number one cause of skin ageing, and God forbid you don’t have a decent SPF in your morning routine. But what effect does winter have on your skin? Cold temperatures, biting winds, central heating and the overwhelming appeal of a hot chocolate over a green juice – not to mention the excessiveness of the festive period anyway – can all contribute to fine lines, redness and dullness, leaving your skin praying for those first days of spring. Here’s how to help your skin survive the next few months...

B EAT PROTEIN EARLY

It’s well known that moderately increasing protein in your diet can help you feel more satisfied after meals. What is less well known, though, is that the time of day that you eat protein also matters. Eating protein for the first meal of the day helps you to feel fuller for longer because after a protein meal, levels of a chemical called tyrosine – a building block for dopamine – rise inside the brain. The time isn’t too important, but it does mean that when you do break your fast, eating a o stave higher protein meal will help to off sugar cravings later on.w

is that for some of us, it’s not too late to turn things around. Intermittent fasting and restricting calories to 800 a day can have a huge impact on blood sugars, although NHS experts do insist that this type of calorie restriction is not suitable for everyone and should only be done under medical supervision. We caught up with diet expert and author o shares his top Dr Michael Mosley, who ng your diet five steps to overhauling and reverse the threat of Type 2 diabetes in 2020…

AVOID TRIGGER FOODS Have you ever wondered why it is so hard, once you have started eating junk food, to stop? Just as the right foods help you feel fuller for longer, the wrong foods can do the exact reverse.

ADOPT THE THREE Fs

Fluid: If you’re not getting enough water, you’ll be sluggish, lethargic and will mistake thirst for hunger. Fat: ‘Good’ fats – rich in mono- and poly unsaturates – powerfully curb the appetite, slowing the rate at which the stomach empties and so delaying the point at which it signals for more food. To g , select olive oil, nuts, feel fuller for longer, oily fish an and (in moderation) full-fat dairy products. Fibre: Fibre promotes a Fibr be better gut microbiome, in increasing the levels o good-mood of c chemicals that are p picked up by your b brain. In addition, fi fibre induces release of a chemical called PYY which reduces PYY, appe appetite.

TRY INTERMITTENT FASTING

The Fast 800 diet is a 12-week, low-carb diet, based on the findings of the UK-based DiRECT trial, which showed that a 12-week, very low-calorie diet resulted in substantial weight loss, plus a reversal of pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes over a year in a primary care setting. Time Restricted Eating and intermittent fasting are parts of the Fast 800 plan and involve

FLORIDA’S HIDDEN TREASURE THERE’S MORE TO THE SUNSHINE STATE THAN THE EAST COAST CHECK OUT FLORIDA’S GULF COAST

WHY GO THERE?

West is best! Florida’s Gulf Coast may not be as well known as Miami on its east coast but it has many of the same sun-kissed attractions. On the shores of Tampa Bay, the city of Tampa offers hip bars and stylish restaurants as well as historic landmarks and museums. If you’re a thrill seeker, visit the city’s Busch Gardens, a 335-acre African-inspired theme park where the world’s tallest, fastest and steepest roller coaster is due to open this spring. Travel 45 miles down the coast to the city of Bradenton and Anna Maria Island where you’ll find miles of sandy beaches and p water sports – so visitors can enjoy a city and beach break in the same holiday…

MUST-DO ACTIVITIES

Dine on the beach in Bradenton 102

For the active adventurer or sporty type, Tampa has plenty to offer. OK! got our city bearings on a seven-kilometre Go! Running Tour and also went on a paddle board tour (above) with Urban Kai that takes you along the Hillsborough River, which weaves it’s way through Downtown Tampa. Once you’ve mastered stand up paddle boarding, test yourself further by doing yoga on your paddle board with the Salty Buddha crew in the calm waters off Anna Maria Island. From the island’s marina you can join a ecokayak safari with Beach Bums – where you may spot a manatee or a bottlenose dolphin – or take a more leisurely boat cruise with Paradise Boat Tours. And we were lucky enough to see a mother and baby dolphin swim past us while at The Beach House Restaurant on Bradenton Beach!

WHERE TO DINE AND BE SEEN

Part restaurant, bookstore, lifestyle shop and design studio, The Oxford Exchange is a trendy place to have breakfast and OK! recommends the Kale Scramble (eggs) or Nutella Babka. If you go on Sundays expect queues before the doors open. A former warehouse, the Armature Works is home to the Heights Public Market – a foodie paradise. The huge market showcases local restaurateurs from the bay area and is a fun place for lunch once you’ve decided which eatery to choose. Bradenton’s Pier 22 has unrivalled sunsets over Manatee River and is renowned for its seafood dishes, while over at Motorworks Brewery you can try a range of locally brewed beers with names such as Pulp Friction Grapefruit IPA and Go Go Godzilla. You’ll also find a beer g garden, food trucks and live music. The Oxford Exchange

THE LOST ALHAMBRA LONDON TELL ME MORE

Let’s face it, these days an Instagrammable backdrop is the most vital requirement of a night out. And you’ll find exactly that at The Lost Alhambra. Situated in the heart of London’s West End, the late night bar, which launched in October, is the go-to destination for cocktails and beautifully bold interiors. No photography experience is necessary as the warm lighting, mirrored walls, neon slogan signs and stylish set-up supply you with all the tools you need to take snaps worthy of any certified celeb.

WHY DO WE LOVE IT?

Aside from its Leicester Square location and fab decor, The Lost Alhambra is steeped in history. It’s on the original site of The Alhambra Theatre, which housed one of the few bars to admit women without a male companion when it opened in 1854. Actresses of the day would frequent the bar with an apparent cry of, “Come, won’t you

bring me my liquor?” – and that phrase is now up in lights above the bar. Sadly, the site burnt down in 1882, but OK! loves the new venue’s dedication to keeping its theatrical soul alive. We can also recommend the food, in partnership with Battersea burger joint Dip & Flip. There’s a mouth-watering menu of succulent sliders, loaded fries and tasty hot wings. And the best part? They serve until midnight – so that’s your late night snack sorted! Love Potion No10 – a tangy blend of pink gin, strawberry jam, lemon juice and pineapple syrup topped with prosecco (£10.50) – was OK!’s favourite cocktail. And those avoiding booze can tuck into a range of mocktails, including a Matinee Porn Star (£6), Matinee Espresso Martini (£6) or alcohol-free prosecco (£4.50). The Lost Alhambra is the baby of the Adventure Bar chain, which also runs hotspots like Tonight Josephine, The Escapologist and Bar Elba. Collectively the venues have been visited by the Duke of Sussex, Margot Robbie and body coach Joe Wicks.

WHAT ELSE?

This place is every party planner’s heaven. Whether you’re the designated maid-ofhonour looking for the perfect place to host

104

your bride-tribe or you’ve been nominated to organise your next work function, the Lost Alhambra team will make your night one to remember. With plush comfy sofas for those who don’t dance, a vibrant dance floor for those who do and a selection of tantalising drinks packages, The Lost Alhambra ticks all the boxes for your next event. OK! VINTAGE WESTLIFE’S KIAN EGAN AND HIS WIFE JODI ALBERT SHARE THE DETAILS OF THEIR ROMANTIC ENGAGEMENT ISSUE – FEB

I

t’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Westlife burst on to the music scene. The band dominated the charts with a number of hits and made rising from their stools for a key change a boyband must. The Irish boys gave the nation songs such as Flying Without Wings and You Raise Me Up during their two decades of fame, but they’ve also given OK! access to some of their most special moments. In 2008, we joined Kian Egan and his then ďŹ ancĂŠe Jodi Albert in Paris, where they revealed all the details of his Christmas proposal. Jodi, now 36, revealed she initially thought Kian was giving h h it her something quite different for her present. “For some reason I thought might be a horse,â€? she admitted, though she was very happy to receive a Tiffany engagement ring instead. The couple were planning to go backpacking in search of a perfect destination for their wedding, but Kian, now 39, insisted it wouldn’t be a ashy affair. “As much as people think that Westlife has earned a lot of money, we’re not ash,â€? he said. “We don’t feel the need to have the biggest ring, largest house, most expensive cars.â€? Jodi, who was an actress in Hollyoaks from 2002 to 2006, added, “He wants to go to the jungle. And I am not going to sit around in a jungle.â€? The pair tied the knot in Barbados the following summer, but Kian did get his wish when he entered the I’m A Celebrity camp in 2013 – and was crowned king of the jungle. Although Jodi stated, “I’ve never been able to imagine marrying anyone else,â€? there was one person who didn’t originally support their romance. “I was standing with Simon Cowell and Jodi walked past and I was like, ‘Wow, who’s that?’ And Simon looked at me and said, ‘No, no, no, kiddo. Not for you!’â€? The pair kept in touch sporadically with a few “drunken phone calls from Kian at 5amâ€?, before Jodi attended a Westlife gig ďŹ ve years later. “She walked into the dressing room and I just looked at her and was like, right, I’m done. That was it. We’ve been together ever since,â€? Kian recalls. The couple now have sons Koa, eight, four-year-old Zeke and Cobi, two. OK!
