FORTNIGHTLY THOUGHT
Hello, people readers!
P
HEW!!! Trying to keep up with the royal saga over the past two weeks has been mind blowing; thank goodness we have our website, www. peoplemagazine. co.za, to keep you up to date with Meg and Harry’s coming and, well, going... To be honest, when I first heard about the ‘Megxit’ drama –what with she and Harry deciding to give up their frontline family duties and announcing their plans to move to Canada – I felt anger towards Meghan: we all just love Harry – how could he do this to us?! (Oh, and the queen and the British people, too, I guess.) But then I thought about the pressure they must feel of constantly being in the spotlight, and remembered how Diana, who divorced Charles in 1996, tried to move away from the relentless media attention. She never was able to, and sadly, it eventually killed her. So now the couple will no longer be known as ‘His and Her Royal Highness’, Harry will be stripped of his military titles and patronages he was awarded after serving two tours in Afghanistan with the British Army, and they will no longer be entitled to public funding from the queen, which means they now have their own financial worries like we do! While I’m almost sure the main reason for them giving all this up is so little Archie can live as normal a life as possible, time will tell whether it’s a successful gambit. So, looking at the dramatic events that unfolded over the past few weeks, all I can say is good for you, Megs and Harry, and best of luck. Take a look at our royal timeline (pages 12 and 13) of everything that went down in the palace. Enjoy!

THE CATCH UP IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! JENNIFER LOPEZ is celebrating her long-running relationship with Versace by becoming the face of the label’s new campaign. The superstar has been associated with the Italian fashion house since 2000, when she wore the brand’s plunging jungle print dress to the Grammy Awards, with the iconic red carpet outfit leading to the creation of Google Images. She celebrated the look once again in September last year, when she sported an updated version to close Versace’s catwalk show in Milan. Now, Jennifer has revealed that she and Versace’s
MEGHAN, DUCHESS OF SUSSEX, has signed a voiceover deal with Disney, with the studio making a donation to an elephant charity in return. According to Britain’s The Times newspaper, a donation will be made to Elephants Without Borders – a conservationist group that focuses on protecting elephants from poachers. The former Suits star reportedly completed the recording before she, husband Prince Harry and baby Archie, eight months, jetted off to Canada for the festive season. Video footage obtained by the Daily Mail shows the moment that Prince Harry spoke with Disney boss, Bob Iger, about his work for his wife at the royal premiere of The Lion King back in July. The news comes after Meghan and Harry announced their intention to ‘step back’ as senior royals, with the couple fully intending to ‘become financially independent’ after streamlining their role within the institution. They went on to launch their new Sussexroyal.com website, outlining their plans for the future, with the couple intending to split its time between the UK and North America.
chief creative officer, Donatella Versace, are celebrating two decades of their professional relationship by collaborating on the brand’s Spring/Summer 2020 advertising campaign. “I am so excited I can finally reveal that I am the face of the #VersaceSS20 campaign!” the 50-year-old wrote on Instagram. ”Thank you to @Donatella_Versace and everyone at @Versace for your vision and collaboration.” In a statement, Jen explained, “To me, Versace represents empowerment and putting something beautiful out into the world. It’s a dream to collaborate with my friend Donatella again on this gorgeous campaign.”
SARAH PAULSON is returning to American Horror Story after sitting out on its last season. The actress appeared in the first eight installments of the hit series, but skipped American Horror Story: 1984 last year – marking the first series without any original cast members. While fans lamented the star’s absence, Sarah told US Weekly during the Television Critics’ Association’s winter press tour that she’ll definitely be back for the upcoming season later this year. However, the star admitted she’s unsure of what her exact role will be – but insisted she’ll be front and centre. The news comes after it was confirmed the show was renewed for at least another three seasons, with series 11, 12 and 13 confirmed. FELICITY JONES likes to start the day by lighting a candle and working on her yoga poses. The Theory Of Everything actress tries to find at least 10 minutes every morning to do some stretches on a yoga mat to help her feel more prepared for the day ahead. The 36-year-old adds that if she has time after a long day’s work, she will go for a run outdoors, and when her busy filming schedule allows, she will try to carve out some self-care time and have a proper pampering session too.

HARVEY WEINSTEI court motion denied after the judge overseeing his New York trial for rape and sexual assault refused to continue jury selection in secret. The disgraced producer’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, clashed with Manhattan Supreme Court Justice James Burke over the defence team’s request to hold the next stage of the selection process behind closed doors. “After we conclude this type of whittling down of the jury pool, we think it’s in both sides’ best interest to do what has been done in other highprofile cases: individual sequestered jury selection,” Aidala explained. He argued potential jurors, who had completed questionnaires about the case, needed to be able to speak freely when quizzed about their answers by attorneys, but insisted that may not happen if the hearings are open to the international media. “We’re asking in order for citizens to be as honest and forthright as possible to conduct the jury selection in private,” Aidala stated. However, the judge was quick to shoot down the claim, to which prosecutors also objected. The second phase of jury selection is currently in process.
SHARON OSBOURNE has insisted she was ‘being precocious’ when she claimed she fired an employee after they failed to see the funny side of having to retrieve her paintings from a house fire. During a recent appearance on UK TV show Would I Lie To You?, Sharon revealed she sent the ex-assistant into her burning house to save artwork, before firing him for not laughing with her and rocker husband Ozzy about the incident later. The former America’s Got Talent judge added the man’s arm and hair had caught on fire before she put out the flames by pushing him into a fountain, but she soon hit headlines and was attacked by fans for being a ‘horrible person’ for her purported actions. However, speaking on her popular show The Talk, the star confessed she embellished the story for the comedy show, urging her critics to ‘get off my back’. “I told a true story about a fire I had in my house, and I woke up my husband’s assistant. I told him to go in and get the paintings out of the room,” Sharon said. “He went in, he got the paintings out, and then, just be to precocious, I said at the end of this little thing I was doing, ‘Oh, and then I fired him’. It was a joke, because I was on a comedy show, and then it comes out in the papers, this man saved our paintings, then I fired him,” she added. After setting the record straight, the star quipped, “I fired him about 15 years later.” BILLY PORTER wanted his tuxedo dress at the 2019 Oscars to ‘play with genders’. The Pose star graced the red carpet at the annual awards ceremony wearing the show-stopping Christian Siriano design, which featured a traditional tuxedo on the top, but a voluminous ballgown skirt on the bottom. The dress made headlines around the world, but Billy revealed that the now-iconic gown almost didn’t happen, as he was turned away from many designers. “We had already been coming up against a wall with many designers because I wanted to do this gender-bending, fluid thing. We just got flat-out ‘no’s from a lot of people,” he explained. “It was my idea to do the top and the bottom, playing with genders.”

SELENA GOMEZ has vowed not to make any more ‘overtly sexual’ music videos because she doesn’t want to embarrass her younger sister. The star is no stranger to appearing in racy music videos, such as the one for her 2015 hit Hands To Myself, in which she appeared almost nude, wandered around a house in black underwear, and got steamy with a man on a bed. However, the star said she has no plans to recreate the look after the footage was played at the singer’s iHeartRadio Album Release Party for her new record Rare. Speaking with KIIS FM, Selena admitted she was embarrassed because her six-year-old sister Gracie was in the audience, confessing, “I didn’t know you were going to play the video. My sister is here... I told my sister I will not be doing videos like that anymore. In a statement Chambers explained the reason for his departure, writing, “There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. JOAQUIN PHOENIX and Martin Sheen have been arrested after taking part in Jane Fonda’s final Fire Drill Fridays climate change protest in Washington, D.C. The Barbarella actress and activist boasted one of the largest crowds to date recently as she staged the last of her events in the nation’s capital, as she prepared to take the weekly march to California. Phoenix served as one of the guest speakers, encouraging attendees to join him in going vegan in a bid to help save the planet. Introducing the Joker star to demonstrators, Fonda revealed Phoenix had come ‘of his own volition’ to address fellow activists, after delivering a similar message onstage at the Golden Globe Awards in early January. Shortly after he took to the podium, police officers warned protesters to disperse or risk arrest, and when Phoenix failed to oblige, he was taken into custody, alongside 79-year-old Sheen, Fonda’s co-star on TV hit Grace And Frankie.
HARRY STYLES once volunteered to keep an eye on a stranger’s dog outside of a restaurant so the man could collect his order. Rory Carroll, who works as a sports correspondent for news agency Reuters, opened up about the incident on a recent Twitter thread, in which people were to share their ‘most awkward or interesting celebrity interaction’. Detailing the incident, which occurred in January 2018, he wrote, “I was outside a restaurant in Hollywood trying to pick up my take out order but couldn’t go in because I was with my puppy. Harry Styles saw my predicament, tapped me on the shoulder and said he could watch Oscar while I went in.” Clearly still overwhelmed by the Lights Up star’s generosity, he added, “What a guy!” SANDRA BULLOCK had a very stylish Golden Globes date after the designers at Oscar de la Renta made a custom bow for her rescue dog. The Bird Box star attended the Los Angeles ceremony in a strapless ochre gown and took along her pup Sweetie, who wore a large bow made of the same fabric around his neck. The news was announced by representatives for Wagmor Pet Hotel & Spa, the organisation through which Bullock adopted her furry friend, via Instagram, when they shared a snap of Sweetie sitting by Sandra’s feet and looking up at her owner while wearing the bow. “We love this so much. @oscardelarenta dressed our rescue Sweetie for the #Golden Globes. #Sandra Bullock sent this to us and asked us to post an update,” they wrote, alongside an image of Bullock and Sweetie in the matching attire. The statement also revealed the dog’s horrific past. “To think this sweet girl spent her first three years in a kennel. Her vocal cords were cut with a spoon. She was shown zero affection. Now look at her,” the animal rescue charity bosses added. “Sandra looks STUNNING too.”
OPRAH WINFREY has backed out of her role as executive producer on an upcoming documentary about the #MeToo movement after being criticised for her involvement in the project. While the key figures involved in the Apple TV+ project have yet to be announced, it will feature former Def Jam employee Drew Dixon, who told The New York Times in 2017 that entrepreneur and record executive Russell Simmons raped her back in 1995. Media mogul Oprah had been linked to the project for some time, but in a statement to The Hollywood Reporterr she revealed she was withdrawing from the role as ‘it had become clear that the filmmakers and her were not aligned in that creative vision’. She added, “I have decided that I will no longer be executive producer on the untitled Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering documentary and it will not air on Apple TV+,” she said. “I want it to be known that I unequivocally believe and support the women. Their stories deserve to be told and heard.”

EMILIO ESTEVEZ believes his brother Charlie Sheen’s getting sober has had a positive impact on their family. The St. Elmo’s Fire star has long been known as the strait-laced son of Martin Sheen, with Charlie notorious for his hell-raising until he revealed he was HIV positive in 2015 – after which he vowed to get his life back on track. Now, in an interview with The Guardian, Emilio revealed that Charlie’s turning his life around has greatly delighted him. “He’s been clean and sober for almost two years now,” he said. “It’s a huge win for him but also for the whole family.”

DANIEL RADCLIFFE was once offered a cup of coffee while cuddling his dog in New York City by a good Samaritan who mistook him for a homeless person. The Harry Potter star often has to put up with being recognised everywhere he goes, but has opened up about a bizarre experience he had while he was out with his girlfriend Erin Darke. Daniel has grown a beard recently, and told chat show host Graham Norton that it resulted in his receiving charity ‒ as a passerby thought he was down and out. “It was very cold, and I had on a hoodie, a fleece and then a big coat over the top. Because it was so cold, I knelt down to warm the dog and I saw this guy looking at me and then he walked past me. But then he came back and handed me $5 and said, ‘Get yourself a coffee mate’. Apparently, I need to shave more often!” OLIVIA WILDE prefers to wear low-rise jeans as they allow room for her ‘gut to expand’. The actress/director has been tapped to front the February 2020 issue of US InStyle magazine, and in an accompanying photoshoot she models a variety of suits and dresses inspired by Hollywood’s Golden Age. However, in an interview held with her Booksmart star, Beanie Feldstein, for the publication, Olivia insisted that she is at her ‘most comfortable’ in classic denim jeans. “I’m still pretending to be a teenager from the early 2000s,” she said. “My most comfortable state is when I’m wearing low-rise jeans, sneakers, and a sweatshirt. In that, I am unstoppable. And if I’m in a high-waist jean, I can’t let my gut expand.” When it comes to dressing for the red carpet, Olivia isn’t afraid to opt for a long sequin gown or chic floral number, and she credits her longtime stylist Karla Welch with helping her put together looks that make her feel confident in the spotlight. SELENA GOMEZ has clarified a comment she sent to Amy Schumer following her IVF reveal after her words of support were misinterpreted online. The Trainwreckk actress appealed to followers for advice about undergoing in-vitro fertilisation in a candid Instagram post when she shared a photo of her bare stomach, with bruise marks from the hormone injections used as part of the medical treatment. In the accompanying caption, Schumer confessed she was feeling ‘really run down and emotional’ after embarking on the lengthy process in a bid to give her eight-month-old son Gene, with her husband Chris Fischer, a sibling. “If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do. We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling,” the comedienne captioned the image of her bruised stomach. Selena was one of her first celebrity friends to comment on the news, writing, “I’m praying for you and Chris. I’m sorry!” Some sensitive critics were quick to jump on the remark, suggesting the singer was ‘sorry’ they had turned to IVF, but Selena quickly returned to Instagram to expand on her short message and make it clear that wasn’t what she had meant at all. “Let me clear that up,” the 27-year-old added. “I said I’m sorry she’s feeling that way. My mom went through the same thing. It’s hard on women’s hearts.”

WHAT’S home life like now for the future king?
T’S true that the royal family in in the midst of troubled times, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement that they plan on resigning as ‘senior’ members of the royal family – and becoming selfsufficient as they split their time between Canada and the United Kingdom – ruffling some feathers. But one person who isn’t feeling any of that chaos is Prince George. Palace insiders tell us that George looked like every other six-year-old child on Christmas morning as he tore into his gifts. It’s important for the family to keep him and his siblings, four-year-old Charlotte and 20-month-old Louis, grounded, so the morning of December 25 saw the future king baking with his 93-year-old great grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and playing games with his young cousins. “I want George to grow up in a real, living environment,” Prince William once said. “I don’t want him growing up behind palace walls – he has to be out there.” George is currently a student at the Thomas’s Battersea private school in London but doesn’t get any special treatment there. “George gets excited learning about wood carving and building a fire,” says an insider. “He’s quite the adventurer.” The insider reveals that the prince is quite popular in school and has made friends with many of his classmates. In fact, he often has play dates in the palace. “It is wonderful for them – and their parents – to go to such a beautiful and historic palace and have the run of the place. But it does involve a bit more planning than a normal play date, as everyone visiting the palace has to be security vetted,” the source says, adding, “Kate’s made sure George knows his manners so George is often respectfully quiet in class. But he’s a chatterbox at home. He’s a jolly little person and inquisitive.” At home, George can usually be found watching Peppa Pig or playing with his siblings. “He’s a wonderful older brother. He’s so patient when Charlotte gets bossy,” the insider continues. “He also dotes on Louis and is so generous with his toys.” While George lives a surprisingly normal life, he certainly reaps the rewards of being born into the royal family. Prince William and Kate often enjoy relaxing vacations at Mustique where, naturally, George joins them; there is an array of celebrity visitors at their Kensington Palace home; and George can easily get his hands on VIP tickets to cheer William’s favourite soccer team, Aston Villa, or his own favourite, Chelsea, in action. But isiders say that it’s his great granny that George has a really special bond with, and that one-on-one time with Queen Elizabeth is one of his favourite ways to spend the day. “She talks to him like an adult,” the insider says. “She loves having him over, and their tea parties are the talk of the palace!”

Meghan & Harry M
LIFE is a royal mess as and quits on the crown.
ANY little girls grow up hoping they will one day meet their Prince Charming, live in a castle, and ride on the back of a white stallion. Not Meghan Markle. She was way too busy acting, practising her culinary skills, studying in Madrid and ticking off a laundry list of goals to worry about the chance encounter with a handsome royal suitor. Fast-forward to present day and life is almost unrecognisable for the striking brunette. She is the duchess of Sussex and wife to the duke, Harry. But as of now, they will no longer use their HRH status anymore. Royal blood pumps differently from that of us mere mortals. It’s expected that you adhere to strict protocols and incredibly high standards. But Meghan, 38, and Harry, 35, aren’t concerned about causing waves. In fact, they’re set on making their own life together, their own rules, and even their own money. They plan to leave the land of the Angles to settle in Canada and keep a
holiday home in Los Angeles to continue their charitable endeavours. “I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper life. I really tried, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging,” said Meghan. Her hubby agreed: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” Prince Harry said. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent.” Now ‘step back’ can have several meanings, but Harry didn’t mince his words. In a lengthy Q&A on the couple’s joint website, he and Meg confirmed they would no longer be receiving funding through the Sovereign Grant, including expenses related to shacking up. Now before you hurl the ‘you must be crazy’ comment the couple’s way, there are a few landmark events that catapulted Meg and Harry into making this decision. We take a look at what led to the duo splitting Royal ties:
12
call it
2016:
2017:
AS far as blind dates are concerned, they’re seldom successful. But there is always the exception. Harry and Meg met in London in July 2016 on a blind date ‒ introduced by a mutual friend. Harry was smitten from first glance. He invited Meg to accompany him on a trip to Africa just four weeks later. It wasn’t long before Meg found herself at the centre of a tabloid scandal that not only brought her past acting roles into play, but her race and sketchy family life too. Harry’s communications secretary issued an official public statement, condemning the British press’s torment of his girlfriend. The statement marked the beginning of the Sussexes’ rising acrimony with the press, and Harry’s personal disappointment that he was not been able to protect Meg against the public backlash.
AFTER dating for more than two years Harry popped the question in November. Not surprising, the ring was a blinger. Of course, Harry designed it himself – using one diamond sourced from Botswana and two smaller stones from Princess Diana’s collection. Not everyone was over the moon that Harry had finally met the one, least of all those inside the royal castle. A leaked e-mail from the highest level at Buckingham Palace claimed a note was sent to the royal family and courtiers by a member of Queen Elizabeth’s inner circle that read: “Duchess Meghan is a horror! Her insulting behaviour, out-of-control spending, unseemly family ties and defiance make her a liability to the monarchy.” And so the scandals surrounding the couple’s relationship continued.
2018:
THOUSANDS gathered to be part of the couple’s wedding that took place on May 19 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Meg wore a dress designed by British trend-stetter Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy.
2019:
2020:
IN what was a massive year for the couple, Meg and Harry celebrated the arrival of their first child in May ‒ a baby boy they named Archie. Meg’s pregnancy had been hard. She was constantly in the press, accused of flaunting her baby bump and touching her stomach excessively – described as ‘virtue signalling’ by some. Just weeks after Archie arrived, the couple began showing signs they may be planning to distance themselves from the monarchy and announced that their son will not have a title, and will instead be referred to as ‘Master’. They also announced they intended to split from their combined charity with the Royal Foundation, and start their own charity, Sussex Royal. By the end of the year rumours had piled up around Meg. Harry jumped to his wife’s defence, saying, “I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.” In December, instead of celebrating Christmas with the royal family, Meg and Harry took a six-week holiday in Canada, away from the drama.
THIS year started with a bang for Meg and Harry. Much to everyone’s shock, they officially announced they were stepping back as senior members of the royal family, and becoming financially independent. A move is also imminent and they will be splitting their time between the UK and North America. Moves as significant as this typically require approval from Queen Elizabeth, the head of family and state. Meghan has meanwhile fled back to their lakeside mansion in Vancouver after the pair announced their decision, leaving Harry to thrash out a deal with the queen. While it’s true that Harry inherited millions from his mom, Princess Diana, it is probably not enough for the couple to live on with their current lifestyle. According to the Dailymail, ‘sources say the couple hope to make their fortune with a film and television production company – and Netflix have already said they would work with them’. They have also assured the Royal Family they will not enter any ‘dodgy deals’ that could discredit the monarchy. Harry broke his silence at a Sentebale charity dinner, of the recent momentous events. “The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges and I know I haven’t always gotten it right but as far as this goes there really was no other option... What I want to make clear is we’re not walking away, and we certainly aren’t walking away from you. Our hope was to continue serving the queen, the commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. I’ve accepted this, knowing that it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am. But I hope that helps you understand what it had to come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.”

2012: ANGELINA JOLIE LEGS IT!
ANGELINA was once again the subject of an Oscar red carpet furore in 2012, but it wasn’t as controversial as her previous moment. Appearing at the 84th Academy Awards in a black strapless Atelier Versace dress with a thigh-high split, Angie’s right leg was exposed and went viral! As the actress held her red carpet pose, bare right leg protruding, audiences couldn’t help but be struck by the recurrent image. A Twitter account ‒ @AngiesRightLeg ‒ was even set up in honour of the lithe limb. “I had a more complicated dress and I wore the more comfortable dress, which was that one,” says Angelina looking back on the moment. “I think I was just so comfortable that the leg came out!”
2000: THAT KISS!
KICKING off the millennium, Angelina and her older brother, James Haven, made headlines with their inappropriate red carpet snog. Angelina, who was 24 years old at the time, began her acceptance speech on winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Girl Interrupted with, “I’m in shock and I’m so in love with my brother right now. He just held me and said that he loves me and I know that he’s so happy for me.” Needless to say the incident has gone down as one of the most bizarre red carpet moments in Oscar history.

2013: JENNIFER’S FROCK SHOCK
RED CARPET dresses should come with a warning because long hems and high heels are a disaster waiting to happen. Jennifer Lawrence found that out to her cost seven years ago on her way to accept her Best Actress award for Silver Linings Playbook. The then-22-year-old star took a stumble at the foot of the steps to the stage in front of her peers and millions watching at home. “What went through my mind when I fell down? A bad word that I can’t say that starts with F!” says Jen of the most famous of various falls she’s had over the years. “What can I say? I’m clumsy,” she adds.
2014: TRAVOLTA’S DAZEEM DISASTER
AS well as host Ellen DeGeneres’ iconic celebrity selfie, the 86th Academy Awards also gave us one of the most bizarre introductions in Oscar history. Welcoming Frozen singer Idina Menzel to the stage, Grease actor John Travolta somehow managed to mispronounce her name as ‘Adele Dazeem’. Who? “I’ve been beating myself up all day,” said John after his gaffe. “Then I thought, ‘What would Idina Menzel say?’ She’d say, ‘Let it go, let it go’!”
2009: HEATH LEDGER (RIP) WINS
2002: ALL HAIL HALLE BERRY!
IT was a landmark Oscar moment in 2002 when Halle scooped the award for her performance in Monster’s Ball. In winning, Halle became the first African-American woman to have ever receive a Best Actress Oscar. Hoping that the recognition would open doors for other black actresses, Halle now laments her Oscar win as not the groundbreaking moment she thought it would be. “That moment really meant nothing,” says Halle. “I thought it meant something, but I think it meant nothing.”
2001: BJORK LAYS AN EGG!
WHEN Icelandic pop star Björk wore a swan dress to the 73rd Academy Awards it ruffled more than a few feathers. The wacky singer and Best Original Song nominee, known for her unique sense of style, even went as far as to lay eggs on the red carpet! She later said of the controversial incident, “C’mon, you don’t bring eggs unless you want to take the p***, right? I was actually amazed at how many people thought I was serious. I didn’t mean to cause a riot.”
IT was a bittersweet moment in 2009 when Heath won a posthumous award for his role as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s epic Batman movie, The Dark Knight. The Australian star died on January 22, 2008, at the age of just 28, just before the film’s release. At the ceremony, Heath’s family were welcomed onstage to accept his Best Supporting Actor award. His father, Kim, said of the accolade, “I’d like to thank the academy for recognising our son’s amazing work. This award tonight would’ve humbly validated Heath’s quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here, his peers, within an industry he so loved.”
2019: BRADLEY GAGA FOR HIS LEADING LADY?
LADY GAGA and Bradley Cooper’s steamy performance at the Oscars last year had everyone wondering if they were more than just co-stars. The pair performed the song Shallow from their hit movie A Star Is Born, for which Gaga won an Oscar. Audiences were more into Gaga and Brad’s onstage chemistry, though. Most excruciatingly for the two stars was the fact that Brad’s partner of four years, supermodel Irina Shayk, was in the audience witnessing the whole performance. The pair split just months later and now share custody of their two-yearold daughter, Lea. Bradley and Gaga have both denied that there was ever anything going on between them other than raw onscreen chemistry. “We did a really good job at fooling everyone,” says Gaga. “We created that. It wouldn’t have worked if you didn’t believe they [were] in love.”

So if you’re looking for some pointers or inspiration to thrill that special person in your life, why not have Hollywood’s finest help you out?
Anne H athawa y

Jessica Alba
Valentine: Film Producer Husband Cash Warren JESSICA doesn’t hold back when it comes to treating her hubby on Valentine’s Day. “I always try to do something for my husband that is completely selfless ‒ something that I hope will rock his world,” says the 38-year-old actress and businesswoman. “Most of it is rated R, so I will give you the PG version: I’ll cook his favourite dessert!”
Kend all Jenner

HOLLYWOOD HEARTS
Chris H emsworth
Valentine: Model Wife Elsa Pataky THOR star Chris has mastered the Marvel universe and proved he can do comedy too, but is he a romantic in real life? “I’d like to think so,” says the 36-year-old Aussie heartthrob. “I make an attempt at it. I can’t say I succeed all of the time, but it’s the thought that counts!”
MattDamon
Candice Swane poel
Valentine: Wife Luciana Barroso MATT’S Valentine’s gifts are not only romantic but practical too! “My wife made fun of me because I once gave her a mountain bike,” says 49-year-old The Martian star on his idea of romance. “She thought that was typical me, I had missed the mark completely. But then I explained, ‘No, here in L.A you can go be in these beautiful canyons with these beautiful vistas. We could ride together’.”
Valentine: Currently Single “THE best gift that I could ever receive on Valentine’s Day would probably be a getaway or a holiday, going somewhere nice,” says the 31-year-old South African supermodel.
y R an Rynold e s
Valentine: Hollywood Actress Wife Blake Lively RYAN is the master at sarcastic wit with his Deadpool character but is a real softie at heart when it comes to romance. “It’s really romantic when it’s not Valentine’s Day,” says the 43-yearold Canadian star. “I have done things where I have flown half way across the world to just see my wife for a day. You gotta do that.”
Shawn Mendes
Valentine: Fellow Music Superstar Camilla Cabelo CANADIAN singer-songwriter Shawn, 21, has a five-step plan for his special Valentine date. “First, make sure you smell good, you’ve showered and you’re clean,” he says. “If you are taking someone out to dinner, don’t go to a ridiculously fancy place but don’t go to Pizza Shack or McDonalds! Make sure you dress nice to match smelling good. Also, be yourself but don’t burp or fart in front of her! Finally, don’t ramble on like I ramble on when I have something to say.” Indeed.
I HAVE done things where I have flown half way across the world to just see my wife for a day. You gotta do that.
Kate Hud son
Valentine:: Actor Partner Danny Fujikawa KATE HUDSON never knows what she’s doing on Valentine’s Day. “Danny likes surprises so I don’t know what we are going to do. Dinner I’m sure.” says the 40-year-old actress.

WHAT I EAT IN A DAY THIS mom of three is still turning heads.
Lunch And Dinner
BOTH meals consists of a lot of fish and vegetables. She loves a salad from Los Angeles vegan hotspot Café Gratitude, which consists of kale, cucumber, carrots, nori sheets, cilantro, basil, scallions and toasted almonds and is topped with a tahini, lemon, olive oil, garlic, and sesame oil dressing. She also loves a crunch salad composed of arugula, red quinoa, cantaloupe and slivered almonds, topped with olive oil, apple cider vinegar and maple syrup.
OOTYLICIOUS is just one of the many words used to describe Beyoncé, and it's not hard to see why she’s still getting heads spinning decades after rising to stardom. Despite having three kids in between, the star is looking just as fab as ever! Here's why.

BEYONCÉ’S idea of a perfect Sunday ‒ or should we say a cheat Sunday ‒ is pizza and wine. The star says Sundays are best with, “No work, not even a discussion about work; lunch at my favorite pizzeria; having a glass of red wine; and watching Game Of Thrones.”

Hydration THREE litres of water with lemon a day.
The Verdict
“I AM not naturally the thinnest woman,” she once confessed, adding, “I have curves. I have struggled with diets and finding something that works for me.” Beyoncé, who often turns to strict vegan diets before an event, such as Coachella, also has a strict rule of no junk food on the road, and the only snacks she wants are almonds and oat cakes served on glass platters. Hydration and good nutrition are both important to the singer, too, which is why she makes a conscious effort to ensure that she’s attentive to her body’s needs. “I try to take care of myself, drinking at least [three litres] of water with lemon a day and making sure to take my vitamins,” she revealed. We’d say she’s on the right track mentally and physically — no complaints here!

“FIRST you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald OLLYWOOD star Bradley Cooper had reached a point in his life where he knew he only had two choices: stop drinking or die. For more than a decade Bradley has not touched alcohol. It wasn’t an easy journey, but overcoming addiction never is. “I wouldn’t have been able to have access to myself or other people, or even been able to take in other people, if I hadn’t changed my life,” he says. “I never would have been able to have the relationships that I do. I never would have been able to take care of my father the way I did when he was sick. So many things. Alcohol affects more than just yourself ‒ it also affects those around you.” Other celebs who have battled addiction demons include Daniel Radcliffe, Billy Joel, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Elton John, Keith Urban, Stephen King, Mel Gibson, Robert Downey Jr and Demi Lovato. Demi began drinking after she was bullied in school. At the age of 18 she withdrew from the Jonas Brothers Live In Concert Tour to enter rehab, but a year later hit rock bottom once again. “I was going to the airport and I had a Sprite bottle just filled with vodka and it was just 09h00 and I was throwing up in the car and this was just to get on a plane to go back to LA to the sober living house that I was staying at. I had all the help in the world, but I didn’t want it.” Demi checked into a sober house in January 2013 after several months of sobriety, and went on to mark her sixth year of sobriety in March 2018. However, the singer admitted in June that same year that she had suffered a relapse. “My dad was an addict and an alcoholic. Guess I always searched for what he found in drugs and alcohol because it fulfilled him and he chose that over a family.”

LATE last year a 29-year-old, whose vehicle was involved in a crash that claimed the lives of five female pupils, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The students from Mashego Secondary School in Monsterlus died when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on the R574 road between Groblersdal and Mpudulle. The vehicle rolled several times and the girls were killed instantly. Scary fact: when you drive on the road at night, one out of seven cars on the road with you is being driven by a drunk driver! The legal drink driving limit is a breath alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1 000ml. When it comes to driving, the rule of thumb is a maximum of one unit of alcohol consumed per hour, which constitutes 10ml of pure alcohol. One unit of alcohol is equivalent to one half-glass of wine, 67 percent of a bottle of beer, or one shot of spirits. You should only consume this amount of alcohol once every two hours, to be safe.

What Causes Train Wreck Alcoholism?
THERE is no single cause that leads to the development of alcoholism but risk factors can increase the chance of addiction. Having a family member with a diagnosis of a substance use disorder increases the risk that one will be diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder. As does the presence of a pre-existing substance use disorder, traumatic events and stress, relationship issues within the family, particularly those that occur in the early stages of an individual’s development, and peer pressure. Children as young as 12 years old face the pressure to drink from their friends or peers. Recovering alcoholic Lauren King explains her family’s long history of drug and alcohol addiction played a huge role in where she ultimately ended up. “I was starved for attention as a kid, and I didn’t have the coping skills I needed to go through the kinds of things the adults around me were putting me through. I wanted to fit in and feel better about myself. Because I didn’t feel like I could turn to my parents for advice and guidance, I turned to my peers,” says Laruen. “At first alcohol gave me confidence, selfesteem, and filled that void I’d carried around with me for so many years. But eventually all the alcohol and bad judgement turned on me and I found myself alone again ‒ this time in the prison of my own addiction. The very thing that seemed to hold the key to solving all my problems ended up making them worse. No amount of alcohol and drugs was ever going to be able to numb my pain. Once I was in it, it was a very difficult situation to get out of. It was only when I finally got checked into a treatment centre that worked with adolescent substance abuse that I found myself a whole new set of peers who were working towards the same goals as I was. I discovered new ways to have fun and bond without alcohol. While researching my own addiction, I saw tonnes of literature that recommended parents set clear expectations for behaviour and establish rules about communicating where and with whom their teenagers are spending their time. Getting to know your child’s friends will undoubtedly give you insight into your teen’s life.”
ALCOHOL can wreak havoc on your body. Longterm abuse can kill liver cells, leading to scarring called cirrhosis and fatty liver disease. In 2015, of the 78 529 liver disease deaths among individuals ages 12 and older, 47 percent involved alcohol. Among males, 49 695 liver disease deaths occurred and 49.5 percent involved alcohol. Among females, 28 834 liver disease deaths occurred and 43.5 percent involved alcohol. Studies of heavy drinkers also show that they are more likely to have trouble pumping blood to their heart and may have a higher chance of dying from heart disease. Heavy drinking also can cause mental health issues like depression and dementia. You may get painful nerve damage that may linger long after you sober up. There is a clear link between heavy alcohol use and many types of cancers (mouth, throat, voice box, and oesophagus, liver, breast, and infections. Many lives are also lost as a result of binge drinking, vomiting and then aspirating some of the vomit back into their lungs. Musician Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning after binge drinking following a period of abstinence. The singer was found dead in her flat in London, on July 23, 2011. She had 416mg of alcohol per decilitre in her blood, enough to make her comatose and depress her respiratory system. She was found dead by paramedics, fully clothed, with a laptop on her bed and empty bottles of vodka on the floor. Amy Winehouse

IN the movie When A Man Loves A Woman, Meg Ryan delivered a heart-tugging performances in her role as Alice ‒ a wife and mother whose problem drinking leads her to rehab. Out doing errands, driving drunk and arriving home Alice realises she has lost her baby daughter along the way. So intoxicated that she can’t even remember where she has been, she has to depend on luck to locate her child. While the story line is fictional, the plot delivers a sobering look at just how serious mom-drinking can be. Many South Africans (moms in particular) are unknowingly addicted to alcohol, with wine having practically become the must-have accessory for modern motherhood. Many moms say wine helps them deal with daily stress and the pressure to have a perfect family. Research suggests that while men tend to use alcohol to have fun, women are more FERMENTED drinks, such as beer and wine, contain likely to turn to alcohol for its negative reinforcing from two percent alcohol to 20 percent. Getting Sober
(And Staying There) WHEN you’re struggling with alcoholism, sobriety can seem like an impossible goal. But with the right treatment and support, recovery is never out of reach, no matter how hopeless your situation seems. The first step (and arguably the most important) is deciding to make a change. There are many places that can assist you, provided you WANT the help. Alcoholics Anonymous is an informal society of more than two million recovering alcoholics throughout the world. In South Africa, there are about 4 500 members. They meet in over 350 local meetings spread around the country. Meetings range in size from a handful in some localities to a hundred or more in larger communities. The organisation explains that although AA is non-professional – it doesn’t have clinics, doctors, counsellors or psychologists ‒ all members are themselves recovering from alcoholism. There is no central authority controlling how AA groups operate. It is up to the members of each group to decide what they do. However, the AA programme of recovery has proved to be so successful that almost every group follows the programme as suggested in the literature.

LOVING someone with an addiction can be incredibly tough.
CAN YOUR RELATIONSHIP
urvive SADDICTION?
South Africans abuses substances like alcohol, dagga and painkillers, and around two and a half million are at risk of becoming or are problem gamblers. There’s no doubt that addicon in any of its forms can take a huge toll on relaonships. While sex and technology addicons may grab headlines, the most common dependency issues impacng couples and families are substance abuse and gambling, says mental health researcher Professor Frances Quirk. “For some people, within socially accepted norms, use can be something they can maintain all their lives and it has lile impact for them or anyone else. For others their use becomes more significant.” If you’re trying to work out if your partner has an addicon, look for changes in their behaviour. They might not be coping well with things they used to cope with, or be neglecng themselves or other responsibilies, or being secreve and trying to hide the effects of their addicon. You can also answer a simple online quesonnaire to determine if someone you love has a problem. It typically includes quesons about level of use, whether the person acknowledges their use and how they respond when it’s suggested they change or stop. There is simple addicon checklist at www.psychologytoday.com/za/blog/hoperelaonships/201411/6-signs-youre-addicted-something or you can search for one online. However, Quirk says, it is common for there to be an event or moment when neither of you can pretend any longer – which can put a relaonship built on trust on very shaky ground. “It might be the person geng busted for driving under the influence. Or you may noce significant amounts of savings missing. When you have evidence, in black and white, that you can’t dismiss, it is quite hard for a relaonship to recover from those sorts of prolonged decepons,” says Quirk. CAN LOVE CONQUER ALL? NOT QUITE ANYONE who’s ever loved an addict knows how difficult it can be to leave, even if it’s not the relaonship they’ve signed up for. If we stay, it’s mainly because we hope the person will change, says psychologist Dr Simon Crisp, from Neo Psychology. “We’re only human,” he explains, “And if you’re commied to that person’s wellbeing you may believe love and support will be enough to help or influence them to overcome this. That can be a trap at mes.” Addicts can be master manipulators, so it can
pretend everything s fine, even if it s the opposite. “The illusion of control is one of the problems with addicon There’s a level of denial about the consequences of it.” In confronng the problem it helps to gain an understanding of where the addict is in their willingness, readiness and ability to change, says Quirk. “If they’re not lined up in all three of those things, they’re not actually likely to follow through. They might say that they want to but they’re probably not going to be able to.” The reasons why are complex. The person may have a biological vulnerability to substance abuse. They may have low self-esteem or anxiety, which they manage through substance abuse. And it can be very difficult, if you’re the non-addicted partner, to understand why they can’t or won’t stop, especially if you believe it’s about simply having the willpower to say no, says Quirk. “It can come down to thinking that their habit is more important than you or the relaonship, or the children, or your finances – and that’s a very difficult posion to be empathec from,” she explains. THREE TIPS ON TALKING ABOUT THE PROBLEM 1. Avoid The Drama: Be direct, unemoonal and as non-judgmental as possible.
Quirk adds that it’s about assessing whether it’s the life you can or want to lead. “You need to ask yourself, ‘Can I continue in this relationship with this person, knowing that it’s possible these sorts of events will recur, and that I may be personally at risk financially or physically?’” she explains. “You need to assess whether you’re prepared to take those risks, and you might need to think about it from the perspective of just you, or you and your family.” TREATING ADDICTION DETERMINING the right course of action or treatment depends on the individual, their circumstances and level of motivation. If the person has supportive relationships, is employed and in good health, they’ve got a better chance of recovery, says Crisp. Here are some options to consider:
MINIMISATION APPROACH
RESEARCH shows that attempts to abstain completely can be unreliable. “So you end up with a person who’s flipflopping from extreme substance abuse to short periods of abstinence,” says Crisp. “Generally, a minimisation approach is the most effective, where the person aims to reduce their use.” The University of New Mexico found this was the leading therapy for alcoholism.
2. Think Ulmatum: “Say, ‘This is such a serious situaon and I’m so concerned; I require you to take certain steps to discuss the issue with me or a therapist’,” says Crisp.
REHAB AND DIY PROGRAMMES IN-PATIENT rehabilitation is a long-term approach to recovery, with various programme lengths available. There are also online DIY resources.
3. Explain The Consequences: If they won’t take you seriously, you may need to consider separang from them or liming your involvement with that person. “That way, they’ll understand that they’re choosing to avoid the issue, that you’re serious about addressing it, and that they can’t maintain that level of denial about the impact of the addicve behaviour,” says Crisp.
PHARMACOTHERAPY ADDICTION specialist, Professor Jon Currie at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital treats addicts with a mix of medications. He claims this method ‘switches off’ cravings in the brain and helps 80 to 90 percent reduce their use and 70 percent stop using completely.
WHEN DO YOU KNOW IT’S TIME TO GO? WHEN you still love the person, but are exhausted by the cycle of their behaviour, it’s time to weigh up the benefits of the relationship you share against the harm the addiction is causing. “The other part of the equation,” says Crisp, “Is how hopeful you are that things will improve, possibly seeking professional advice about the person’s
33
COUNSELLING WHETHER the addict heads towards reduced use or abstinence, understanding their reasons for using is key, says Crisp. “Sometimes it’s really hard for an addict to understand what their motivation is for doing those things in the first place – and working it out with a counsellor may help. Also, therapy can teach you strategies which can help or reduce the need to use.”

SE stars are flaunting their new bodies after shedding a LOT of weight.
INGING sensation Adele recently flaunted her weight loss on a beach vacay. The star, who has reportedly lost over 44 kilograms, is not only looking better than ever but she’s feeling amazing, too. Spending some time in Anguilla with Harry Styles and James Corden, the singer flaunted her new figure in a short black dress, accessorising with a necklace, scarf, great hairdo and most importantly, a fabulous smile! Adele, who has reportedly been on the Sirtfood Diet (which focuses on foods that increase certain proteins in the body that regulate the metabolism and inflammation – but also allows for red wine and chocolate!) credits her major weight loss to ‘90 percent diet’. First making headlines with her weight loss at Drake’s birthday party last year, as well as at a recent Caribbean vacation, Adele has totally transformed in the last year. According to personal trainer and Pilates instructor Camila Goodis, however, it wasn’t hard work in the gym only. While the Hello singer is not currently one of Goodis’ clients, the trainer believes that ‘90 percent’ of Adele’s weight loss is a result of a change in her diet, including eliminating processed food, sugar, and soda. “I don’t believe she likes exercise much, but she has changed her lifestyle,” Goodis says, adding, “Giving
up processed food, sugar, soda and get into an exercise routine, like cardio and strength training, will change people’s body.” The Sirtfood Diet is an eating plan that focuses on sirloins ‒ proteins in your body that effect cellular health and metabolism. This includes kale, extra-virgin oil, buckwheat, matcha, blueberries and arugula, but also allows for red wine and dark chocolate. Adele is also said to have taken up reformer Pilates with friend Ayda Field, as well as training at home (staying out of the gym was her main priority after splitting from husband of eight years Simon Konecki, whom she shares son Angelo with). Sources say Adele has been doing high-intensity workouts at home; she was using training videos by Joe Wicks, known as the Body Coach, and Canadian-born trainer Dalton Wong, who has Jennifer Lawrence as a client. “Adele’s been secretly working with these personal trainers,” reveals an insider, adding, “She’s not the sort to exercise in front of others, so she follows regimens and plans at home, using their videos and tutorials. The progress she has made in the last six months is clear for all to see.” Adele isn’t the only star to have shed a drastic amount of weight recently, though. I’m A Celebrity’s Charlotte Crosby revealed her day on a plate recently after losing a whopping 20 kilograms. “I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time,” says the 29-year-old former Geordie Shore star, who went from a size 16 to a size eight. The star, who was recently on I’m A Celebrity…. Get Me Out Of Here! Australia reveals that she’s dropped to a low 59 kilos thanks to a balanced diet and the ‘occasional cheat day’. “It’s good to have that one day where you eat what you want, because then you work towards it,” says Crosby, who does reveal though, that foods like cheesy pasta and binges that included Big Macs are not only a thing of the past, but had also the cause of many arguments with her family. “Me and my mom [Letitia Crosby] had a big argument when I was doing an appearance in Ireland,” she says, adding, “I went out and came back to the hotel with three Big Macs and 20 chicken nuggets and hid in the bathroom to eat it. She caught me and we fell out for a long time over this and I knew I had to change something.” The star now sticks to a healthier, low-calorie alternative.

Epilepsy.
FEBRUARY 10 is International Epilepsy Day, with February 10-16 being National Epilepsy Week. How much do you know about the condition?
What Is Epilepsy?
TOZA GOCO. T H E. AL ZIN HE GA RE A O M M LE R P FO P EO
EXPERTS explain that epilepsy has no identifiable cause in about half the people with the condition. In the other half, the condition may be traced to various factors, including: Genetic Influence: Researchers have linked some types of epilepsy to specific genes, but for most people, genes are only part of the cause. Head Trauma: A car accident or other traumatic injury can cause epilepsy. Brain Conditions: Brain tumours or strokes – stroke is a leading cause of epilepsy in adults older than age 35. Infectious Diseases: Meningitis, AIDS and viral encephalitis. Prenatal Injury: According to Mayoclinic. org, before birth, babies are sensitive to brain damage that could be caused by several factors, such as an infection in the mother, poor nutrition or oxygen deficiencies. This brain damage can result in epilepsy or cerebral palsy. Developmental Disorders: Autism and neurofibromatosis.
MEDICAL professionals explain that symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure. In most cases, a person with epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time, so the symptoms will be similar from episode to episode.
Symptoms To Look Out For
Temporary confusion A staring spell Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs Loss of consciousness or awareness Psychological symptoms such as fear, anxiety or déjà vu
Types Of Seizures
DOCTORS generally classify seizures as either focal or generalised, based on how the abnormal brain activity begins. Focal Seizures: This is when seizures appear to result from abnormal activity in just one area of your brain ‒ focal (partial) seizures. These seizures fall into two
36
There Is Treatment
EPILEPSY can be treated with medications or surgery. Some people require lifelong treatment to control seizures, but for others, the seizures eventually go away. Some children with epilepsy may outgrow the condition with age.
When To See A Doctor
MAYOCLINIC.ORG shares some must-know signs: If the seizure lasts more than five minutes. If breathing or consciousness doesn’t return after the seizure stops. If a second seizure follows immediately. If you have a high fever. If you’re experiencing heat exhaustion. If you’re pregnant. If you have diabetes. If you’ve injured yourself during a seizure. categories – focal seizures without loss of consciousness, or focal seizures with impaired awareness. Generalised Seizures: These appear to involve all areas of the brain. Six types of generalised seizures exist – absence seizures, tonic seizures, atonic seizures, clonic seizures, myoclonic seizures and tonic-clonic seizures.

PISCES
(February 19 – March 20) Card Of The Week: King Of Swords WHAT’S with the raging temper? It’s not like you to be so hot headed, yet lately you can’t seem to control your emotions. Flying off the handle for no reason is making matters worse with your partner and, if single, preventing a budding romance from taking off. Every time you feel the need to lash out, rather take a deep breath. This slows down your fight or flight reaction and allows you to calm your nervous system and choose a more thoughtful and productive response.
ARIES
(March 21 – April 19) Card Of The Week: The Hierophant THIS period will see you and an old friend have some business to attend to. Be honest and open about how you feel and allow the other person the chance to give their side of the story and an opportunity to explain the reasons for their hurtful actions. The relationship may be repairable but only if you both know each other’s expectations.
TAURUS
(April 20 – May 20) Card Of The Week: The Tower FOR the last few weeks there have been small problems that are increasing and situations are getting out of control. The Tower is an ‘ending’ card, without a doubt, and represents the Universe telling you that you require this change to happen for your own spiritual growth. You may have to endure heartache at first, but you will rebuild and become whole again.
(May 21 – June 20) Card Of The Week: The World: IT makes intuitive sense: if you lock yourself in your house, how many exciting, serendipitous things are going to happen to you? Not many. This period is the perfect time to try your luck, with a high probability of getting a moderate reward or, in the worst case scenario, progress towards your goals.
CANCER
(June 21 – July 22) Card Of The Week: The Moon THAT rain cloud that has been following you around for several weeks has finally burst and you are left feeling shocked and overwhelmed. Although you knew this day was coming, nothing could really have prepared you for it. While we all go through rough patches, staying in the eye of the storm won’t help your situation. We know it is not easy but when you do the work to overcome your difficult experiences, you can heal.
LEO
(July 23 – August 22) Card Of The Week: The Hanged Man YOUR privacy has been compromised. You’ve been severely embarrassed by an image taken by somebody else’s phone, a rumour spread by a friend, or backstabbing by a loved one. This will trigger a crisis in your life which needs a bit of expert advice. Go to a friend or family member you trust and report what happened. Take the steps to minimise the damage and accept the lessons learnt.
AQUARIUS
(January 20 – February 18) Card Of The Week: Three Of Swords
SOMETIMES the best way to pull off a plaster is quickly. This period you see yourself forced to deal with a conflict that has been causing you great anxiety. The best thing to do is confront it head on. Don’t mince your words. Don’t soften your actions. Just finish it.
Three Of Swords
A FLOATING heart pierced by three swords and surrounded by grey thunder clouds and a down pour of rain, the Three Of Swords is a card that represents pain inflicted by words, actions and intent. This is an image of grief, loss and literally heartbreak.

If you don’t know where to start, try visualising it. In a calm state, picture cords of light connecting both of you. Inwardly say ‘thank you’ for what you’ve learned from the relationship even if the lessons were hard. Then firmly assert, ‘it’s time to completely break our bonds’. Visualise cutting each bond completely so you’re free of any energetic ties and put the relationship to rest.

INVESTING OME of the first questions new investors ask is, “What is the difference between saving and investing money?” and “How do I know what to use each of these tactics for and when to use them to create a good financial future for myself and my family?” So, before you begin your journey to building wealth and finding your financial independence, it is important that you understand the differences and why it’s important to Barry Shrosbree plan for both. We chat to
Barry Shrosbree, senior manager in Life And Wealth at 1Life. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAVING AND INVESTING MONEY: Saving is about setting money aside for short-term goals or for emergencies in a quick and easy-to-access fund or account, for things like a rainy day, unexpected expenses or that welldeserved end-of-year holiday. Investing, on the other hand, is the process of putting money away for a longer term in order to

generate an acceptable rate or return over time. Your goal with investing is to create wealth and see your money grow, over time, to fulfil a longer-term objective, like a comfortable retirement, through investment vehicles such as a retirement annuity, real estate and stock. ALL ABOUT EMERGENCY SAVINGS: Emergency savings, however, are important to build early on, as this forms the foundation upon which your financial house is built. You should first have savings available to help with any unforeseen expenses and then examine investing for your future. For emergency fund savings, typically a good number to work towards is three to six months of your expenses for your savings. This may seem like a daunting number but, as with anything, it’s best to start somewhere and build up. You could use a variety of products to serve this need, like short term notice deposits with your bank, savings accounts or perhaps putting extra money into your access bond, if you have one, where the funds are quickly accessible when needed. And, even better, if

A MOM of a baby with the rare harlequin condition says cruel trolls mock him and say he looks like a doll.

MOM whose baby has a rare skin condition is speaking out to raise awareness of his disorder ‒ because people mistake him for a doll. Two-year-old Michal Winter was born with harlequin ichthyosis, a rare condition that causes his skin to shed every day and become red, cracked and dry and puts him at severe risk of infections. Mom Anna Ciesielska, 30, has to apply lotion on Michal every four hours to keep his skin moisturised and says her baby is half the size he should be compared to other children his age because of the condition. Anna, from the UK, says people mock Michal’s appearance online and that passers-by come up to her thinking she’s pushing a doll in her pram. “People will come up to me and ask what happened to him and if they can help,” says Anna. “I was in a shop and someone came up to us and was staring at Michal and asked if he was a doll. When Michal moved they were totally surprised; they were surprised he was a real boy. When we go out people stare at us, their jaws drop. Sometimes a person will see a photo of him online and message me saying he looks like a doll; it really upsets me. Michal is a perfectly normal boy with a wonderful nature. He just has this skin condition.” Anna only knew that Michal had harlequin ichthyosis after he was born covered in plates of thick, cracked skin. Harlequin itchthyosis is a genetic disorder that causes the body to become covered in thick plates of skin. The abnormal growth of the skin inhibits growth and movement, meaning

Michal is still unable to walk and is smaller compared to other children his age. “It was a total surprise that Michal has Harlequin ichthyosis. I didn’t know anything was wrong until he was born. It was a huge shock. I thought I was going to have a healthy baby. At first it was horrendous for us. I was devastated. The doctors didn’t know how long Michal would have. Despite that, he’s such a happy and smiley child. He’s overcome so much and despite the challenges he faces he’s such a happy and loving child. He loves meeting people and being out in the world. He has a passion for life.” Anna says that she only saw Michal a few hours after his birth and that at first, doctors were baffled what was wrong with her baby. “I didn’t see him initially when he was born, only a few hours later. When I first saw him I was obviously very upset. I was worried that he would suffer and was in pain. Eventually, one of the doctors broke the news to me about what had happened.” Anna says she has to follow a strict routine to stop Michal’s skin from cracking or becoming dangerously infected. She applies two different types of cream to Michal every four hours to ensure his skin is constantly protected and exfoliated and gives him a special moisturising bath once a day. Michal’s condition means that he’s unable to regulate his own body temperature, therefore requiring Anna to ensure rooms aren’t too hot or cold for him in case his body temperature becomes inbalanced. Anna also has to limit the amount of time Michal spends in the sun in case his skin gets burnt. “It’s a big challenge. You have to keep him at the right temperature all the time,” she says, adding, “He’s always at risk of infection and getting sick, we have to be very careful all of the time.” Michal’s family are raising money to buy him a nanobubble bath to help exfoliate his skin painlessly.

SERIOUSLY WEIRD SOME truly strange crimes – and occurrences – from around the world. N 2010, Kristine, 45, and Michael, 43, Barnett of Lafayette, Indiana, adopted a six-year-old Ukraine-born girl, Natalia Grace, with dwarfism. Nine years later, much to their confusion, they were charged with abandoning her. Within their first few weeks as a family, the Kristine and Michael Barnetts noticed Natalia seemed to be older than they’d been told, with a sophisticated vocabulary, pubic hair and menstrual periods. A doctor ordered bone density tests to check Natalia Grace her age, and results suggested she was at least 14. So the Barnetts began to treat Natalia like a teenager. Then, claim the Barnetts, Natalia began making death threats against them. She was sent to a psychiatric hospital, where she told doctors she wanted to kill her family. “She was standing over people in the middle of the night. We had to hide all the sharp objects,” Kristine Barnett told The Daily Mail. In 2012, the Barnetts legally changed Natalia’s age (from eight to 22) and helped her get benefits so she could continue to receive psychiatric care. A year later, with Natalia living independently in an apartment, the Barnetts and their son moved to Canada. Soon after, they lost touch with the girl. But inexplicably, a second set of bone density tests, performed in 2010, surfaced, seeming to show Natalia was at that time just eight years old, and she told police herself in 2014 she’d been ‘left alone’ when her parents moved away. Michael and Kristine Barnett surrendered to on September 18, 2019, and have been charged with ‘abandoning’ Natalia.

GARY VAN RYSWYK, 74, of Sebring, Florida, has been charged with practising medicine without a licence following a bizarre incident at his home. On August 18, 2019, police responded to a 911 hang-up call from Van Ryswyk’s house. Van Ryswyk told officers he’d just Gary Van Ryswyk
removed the testicles of a man he’d met on a ‘website for those who have a fetish for castration’. Officers found a 53-year-old man lying on a bed, holding a towel to his groin, with said body parts in a nearby jar. He was sent to hospital for medical treatment. Police found a ‘surgery room’ in the house with medical equipment and a camera to record the procedures. Investigators said Van Ryswyk admitted to performing the surgery on at least one other man. He also said he removed one of his own testicles. His most recent procedure went wrong when the ‘patient’ bled profusely, making it difficult for Van Ryswyk to suture the wounds.

Hanna Kostenko, 31, is an artist and founder of ‘Royal Pet Pawtrait’, where she and her colleagues who are based around the world create paintings of pets based on images of kings, princesses, nobles and military of the 14th-16th centuries. Hanna got the idea three years ago while working on projects about animals and after watching The Secret Life Of Pets. The artists use unique brushes, special techniques and professional effects to create the effect of oil painting, even incorporating some of the pets’ favourite toys ‒ and every pawtrait takes up to five days to complete. “The key moment in the creation Royal Pet Pawtrait was the [animated film] The Secret Life Of Pets,” Hanna says.

IN can Guinea tribe rumoured to have ‘butchered and eaten’ Rockefeller heir 60 years ago.
SOURCE: MAGAZINE FEATURES
ASCINATING photographs of a reclusive cannibalistic tribe that would use the decapitated heads of their enemies as pillows and allegedly committed the gruesome murder of Michael Rockefeller 50 years ago have emerged. Intense photo portraits show the men, women and children of the Asmat people who live on the coast of New Guinea – including tribal elders sitting behind their sacred masks of wood, the hard stare of an older man sporting a feathered headdress, and a handsome teenager who seems far more at ease in the front of the camera. Other striking shots include the tribe gathering for a community meeting in a rudimentary hut and a collection of the controversial tribe heading across the coastal waters of Papua, Indonesia on their own hand-hewn canoes. the Asmat people have spent centuries hunting down their enemies and removing their heads, sometimes transforming their decapitated skulls into pillows and other times using them as macabre bowls to eat the flesh of their opposing tribes. “I have always really wanted to go to Papua, in particular the Asmat area,” admitted Chiodini, who also works as a manager for an energy company. “I discarded several expeditions to the area because they didn’t include Asmat and chose a tour based on the recommendation of a local expert. Asmat handicraft is legendary, of course and a big reason for my visit. Another was the beautiful body and facial decorations on display; but most of all I yearned Photographer and explorer to explore a tribe which Gianluca is close to Chiodini ‘world limits’. But you really need to want to go to Asmat, because it takes several days to get there; you need to sleep in tents in their longhouse, to navigate in narrow rivers and they are not that friendly. I knew the Rockefeller story before I got there; I was also a little bit scared because you cannot know what you will face when you arrive in the area. Officially headhunting ceased in the ’90s. What I can say is that Asmat are relatively isolated and their most important cultural traditions are still strong ‒ you can feel it as you explore the area. Asmat did not only hunt for skulls, they also worshipped them. The skulls Michael Rockefeller

of the deceased were stripped of the brain and the eyes and nasal parts were closed up in order to prevent evil spirits entering or exiting the body. Skulls that were modified and decorated were displayed by the Asmat in an honourable place in their homes. Although the practice is said to have waned since the 1990s, the Asmat people have long believed that when they killed a man and ate him, they take his power and become him. Every person was named after someone deceased, or after a killed enemy. Without doubt their biggest alleged scalp was Michael C. Rockefeller – the great-grandson of the Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller, once the richest man on Earth, and son of Nelson Rockefeller, who became Gerald Ford’s vice president. Michael was exploring New Guinea in 1961 in search
of treasures to bring home and put on display in his hometown of New York City. He visited Asmat – where he declared the region as ‘wild and somehow more remote country than what I have ever seen before’ – where he had a pragmatic, if not overly friendly, relationship with the local tribes. As his boat approached what is now Papua New Guineas on November 19, a sudden squall churned the water and capsised Rockefeller’s boat. Despite being 10 miles from dry land, he attempted to swim to shore. In 2014, Carl Hoffman, a reporter for National Geographic, revealed in his book Savage Harvest [available from Exclusive Books] that he believed Rockefeller was murdered and eaten by the Asmat people. According to years of research, the Oil Standard heir had managed to make it back

to the island but was confronted by a bank of Asmat tribespeople who were fishing the waters.” For Gianluca, the Rockefeller murder was no reason not to visit one of the most unspoilt areas on Earth. He remembers speaking to the tribal elders, old enough to have partaken in their tribe’s history of cannibalism and headhunting, and being distracted by the notion of asking the ancient warriors to pose for a photo. “Being able to capture people in their environment and show what life is like in these places is a big part of what I enjoy about travel photography,” he says. “In other worlds, connecting with locals, even if sometimes just with non-verbal language. This is when I take my best shots.”
Little GOES A LONG WAY
A CHANCE encounter opened a couple’s eyes to an incredible way they could help pay it forward for destitute children. ATH and Danny Brink, from Cape Town, always had a vision to help children in need but never knew quite how to go about it; as with so many great things, Little Brinks ‒ a non-profit organisation ‒ started quite by chance. In 2008 Katherine and Danny went to the Department Of Social Services offices in Elsies River to meet their adopted daughter’s biological family. While in the offices they were struck by the number of children and elderly people who came to the offices destitute and unable to think of where their next meal would come from. “I remember looking at Danny and saying, ‘We need to do something!’. That year we held the first of many Christmas parties, providing presents and all important food parcels for 50 children. The following year we started taking in kids in emergency situations for the night so social workers could find them a safe long-term home. We opened a soup kitchen at Buren High School in Brooklyn that today feeds young people three times a week with a nutritional lunch.”

The kitchen feeds as many as 150 learners every day Kath explains the Buren High School lunch project started when a group of concerned teachers noticed that several learners were coming to school hungry and were struggling to concentrate because of this. The school approached Little Brinks, who agreed to help, and together they opened the Little Brinks Kitchen at the school. On the very first day 60 children came for food. The next day there were 80 and soon the kitchen was feeding as many as 150 learners every day. “We have also started feeding programmes at crèches in Du Noon and in Hout Bay, where we found many kids that were going to bed hungry because their parents, while good people, just cannot find work. We started a matric dance room where girls can borrow a dress and shoes, making it possible for them to look like princesses, for free. We also work through social workers in the specific areas that are in need of help and we do this so that it helps the family with getting grants and getting their children into schools as well as helping register children and getting birth certificates, which many do not have. We then meet families and see what they need and how we can help. Three years ago we opened a safehouse for children aged from newborn to six years old who need to be urgently placed in safekeeping for 90 days, but also take on siblings and older kids who are suicidal for a few days finding them a more permanent safe place. We also plan on doing a ‘Don’t Dump Your Baby Campaign’ early this year,” says Kath.
50
In addition, the Brinks have plans to start a project to rehabilitate teens who have grown up only knowing crime and hate through sport, and by giving them a place to stay and training them in a trade, giving them hope and encouraging them to actually have dreams so they don’t continue the cycle of gangsterism and drugs while locked up. They also feed four pensioners from an old age home, as well as run a safehouse. “The safehouse started out as an emergency home where children could stay for up to 90 days. Danny and I registered as safe parents with the Department Of Social Development. We work closely with the Department Of Social Development, as well as other government and private organisations,” she says. Katherine gave up her full time job to run Little Brinks, which receives no funding from government and relies solely on the donations of people every month – this is done in the form of monthly R100 pledges, which is then used towards purchasing the items for those who rely on them. “Our vision is to ensure that each and every child and baby has a place of safety, food and clothing. We have seen far too many cases of abuse – some of which will continue to live with us forever. SPREADING feel-good news. What a hidden delightful surprise! I always feel very pampered and spoilt when I go there. It has been in that area since the 1970s and is still going strong, and I’m sure it is because of their quality and good therapists. Alyssia F, Greenside East MY dog Petal went missing for five nights and four days. My incredible friends and family (Maria, Yael, Tal, Kim, Brett, Teal, Sach, Jess, Chris, Irit, Don, Benita, Mom and Dad) were by my side every second, helping me with supportive calls and messages, driving me around looking for her, phoning vets, SPCAs and putting posters up. A man called Padney saw a poster outside the Financial Fitness Centre where he was working. That poster was the last one of 200 to go up. He recognised her because he’d seen her at his friend Tshepo’s place in Tembisa. A special thank you to Chris for driving me to fetch Petal. I’m so grateful she was safe with someone with a good heart. Maria, thank you for always being available. Blessed to have people in my life who didn’t stop helping me and contributed to getting her back. A reward was given to both men. Beth Stein, Johannesburg

guitar vibe and the singer-songwriter thing, which I wasn’t expecting actually. It’s a case of knowing your audience, going out on tour and seeing what makes people cry, what makes people jump around and what makes people want to rock out and tear the roof off of the place. So with this next album, I was like, “Right, I’m going to go into the studio to write songs and not stick myself in a specific corner or to pigeonhole myself.” I am glad I did what I did the last time because it worked out but I stuck myself in a specific genre and stayed there. This time is different.
Niall with fellow 1D bandmates Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson you feel at the beginning of this er in your music career? eling really good. I went in with e of just going to write good pop y style and the outcome has . the new album going to be n say right now is the title is a track on the album. It was the wrote down when I started the cess. It just describes the album u felt under pressure to match the f your first album? ally because when you’re ou don’t realise what’s going your bubble. Also, I’m not a eader, unless I am going for ne! Going into this, the way I was t was, “If I just go and write going to come.”
Q: Do you get a lot of people who perhaps weren’t fans of 1D liking your solo material? NH: Yeah, I’m sure it happens quite often but not everyone is going to be into it, are they? That can be said about any type of music really. I think that’s why I did that type of album first, to try and open up with the audience and give them a good taster of what’s to come. I think Nice To Meet Ya is a good transition of that into the next period. Q: How do you decide which songs to put on the new album? NH: I haven’t got to that part yet! I’ve whittled it down to about 17. I’m going to try and drop it down from there but it’s quite hard when you are emotionally attached to songs. You have to get your ignorance ears on and just be like, “That’s not good enough! Is that really meant to be there?” It’s tough to get it down to that small number. Q: Is there a theme with this new album? NH: Yeah, It’s definitely on the rockier side of pop. I try and write my songs around riffs, which I guess a lot of pop songs aren’t now because it’s all just melody driven. I try and write my songs from the rock influence side of it. There’s all kind of ’80s grooves, hard-hitting drums and big basses. Q: What have you learned about yourself since your first solo album? NH: I definitely learned from Flicker that people still crave that singer-songwriter thing in this world of fast-moving tracks. People still crave the acoustic
53
Q: What are your plans for the next tour? NH: I love performing so the live show will be based on what I do in the studio. On the first album I wanted to keep it relatively small because it suited that type of music. Now, I’ll have two records that are starting to ramp up the tempo and they will blend together nicely. The bigger the show, the better. In my head, I’m still a 12-year-old with an air guitar standing in front of the mirror, so I love getting out on stage. Q What can you tell us about your friendship with Lewis Capaldi? NH: My cousin introduced me to his music. He had this thing with Vevo with less than 1 000 views with a song called Bruises. I just saw him and heard his voice and it was like, “This guy’s unbelievable” Then I wrote to him and said, “I love what you are doing. If you ever want to come and play a show with me...” So we met up in Glasgow, where he is from, when I was playing my show there. He came out and played a few tunes before I went on. Lewis Capaldi We had a few beers. It was St Patrick’s Day, there was a rugby game on television and we met up and we got drunk! Exactly what you see is what you get with Lewis. You will never be able to change that man, which is the best thing. Q: Finally, what do you do to relax between everything else you are doing? NH: Most of the time I just chill. I go home, snooze, watch television, watch something on Netflix or something. That’s it really. I just tend to stay at home but when I go to different cities around the world, I like to have a good look around because for a long time I couldn’t go anywhere. It’s nice to be able to walk the streets again.

HOT AND HEAVY:

WHAT you need to know about the reality show that is pushing the boundaries when it comes to what love is supposed to look like.
THE INSIDE SCOOP PICS: MAGAZINE FEATURES
H Heav ot And y prem friends T’S 2020 and we on TL ieres think he can were confident C J a n u do better than that reality TV had ary 2 5. Joy – someone reached its peak and
that there was nothing new on the horizon. How wrong we were! In TLC’s brand-new reality series Hot And Heavy, viewers get a glimpse of what life and dating is like while struggling with obesity. The series follows the lives of three ‘mixed weight’ couples who often face harsh comments and criticisms for their weight – specifically because the women are heavier than the men. The series, which has just premiered in the United States, has been met with harsh criticism, but TLC has hit back saying the series hopes to show the world that love has no size. Throughout the series, we get a glimpse into the lives of the three couples as they face the difficulties of dating as a ‘mixed weight’ couple. First, there’s Joy and Chris. The couple has been dating for three years and Chris is ready to take the next step. But his family and Joy and Chris
prettier. Meanwhile, Kristin and Rusty have been married for two years and are trying to have a baby. However, Kristin has been told that she won’t be able to bear a child because of her weight. Finally, we are introduced to Adriana and Ricardo, who are an open book when it comes to the trials and tribulations of being a ‘mixed weight’ couple. Since the show was announced late last year, people have been very quick to criticise TLC
for their bold new concept. “I get that obese people need love too, but celebrating morbid obesity is just wrong, it’s not something to aspire to. Definitely avoiding this show,” a viewer said on Instagram. Another viewer added, “Loving someone for who they are is wonderful and amazing, and we should all do it. Enabling something life-threatening is another story. These women have real medical issues and need to try and lose weight, not be skinny, but lose weight.” However, the stars of the series say that they do not feel exploited at all and are proud to be part of a show that shows the world that love stories look different to different people. “I feel empowered,” Rusty’s wife, Kristin says. “I feel like I have a voice now in this world. We are a normal couple. We have normal everyday lives, normal everyday struggles just like everybody else. But a lot of people don’t see us as a normal couple.” Meanwhile, Adrianna says, “You see it in the media all the time – larger men who are with typically attractive women… You see it on sitcoms and in cartoons like The Simpsons and Family Guy. Where do you see couples that are like us with a larger woman? It’s really underrepresented.” The series has certainly proved to be a conversation starter.
A LOOK AT THE
Feeder Fetish
WHILE shows like Hot & Heavy are out there to squash the notion that ‘mixed weight’ couples are improper, the truth is, some men are sexually aroused by seeing their partner gain weight. While fat fetishism could simply be someone attracted to someone who is overweight, it becomes a problem when one party gets obsessed with feeding to the point of making their partner morbidly obese. For feeders, it’s not just about being sexual with an obese partner, it’s the journey of getting them there. There’s a lot more to being a feeder than simply enjoying a partner who’s on the heavier side. It’s about obtaining a sense of power and dominance through the act of feeding by bringing loss of mobility and even the inability to perform the simplest life tasks without their assistance. “Some consider this fetish to be part of BDSM,” says Dr Alexis Conason, a licensed clinical psychologist who specialises in eating disorders, body image concerns and sexual issues. “Food is used as a means of control because the feeder is determining
54
what the feedee puts into their body and how the body changes as a result of his actions.” While many men and women have found ways to make a lot of money online by charging people to watch them eat, the feeder fetish has proven to be an extremely dangerous one and many obese men and women have almost lost their lives because of their partner’s desire to change their body. Donna Simpson, the world’s heaviest woman to give birth, says that she quit the dangerous lifestyle for reasons relating to her health and her ability to care for her children. At her heaviest, 330 kilos, she was earning R1.2-million a year just by charging people to watch her eat online. This is why shows like TLC’s Hot And Heavy are trying to change people’s perceptions of obesity and ‘mixed weight’ couples. While these men are attracted to their larger women, they’re not actively trying to control them through food, and are therefore challenging the stigma that comes with dating someone who’s overweight.

FATHER BROWN
RARELY does a decade begin as dramatically as the 1990s did. We were just catching our breath after the fall of the Berlin Wall when a series of extraordinary events crowded the world stage. The collapse of East European communism, the freeing of Nelson Mandela, the reunification of Germany, the Persian Gulf War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Grunge, hip hop and boy bands defined the decade musically as artists like Nirvana, Tupac Shakur and N’Sync provided an almost dizzying variety of music. From executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Mark Herzog, The Nineties explores the decade that gave us the Internet, DVDs, and other cultural and political milestones.
THE charming Father Brown, played by Mark Williams, returns to solve more mysteries in the sleepy Cotswold village of Kembleford. In this series, based on the character created by GK Chesterton, the charismatic priest investigates the murder of an eccentric beekeeper, uncovers the hidden motivations behind a deadly art exhibition and steps in when Mrs McCarthy’s family reunion is threatened by a fortune-teller’s predictions. And when Bunty is tried for the murder of a young aristocrat, it’s a race against time for Father Brown to prove her innocence and save her from the hangman’s noose.
The Nineties airs on Sundays from February 2 at 19h20 on History Africa.

Lizzie McGuire Reboot HALTS PRODUCTION
F you’re counting down the days until the Lizzie McGuire reboot premieres on Disney+, the entertainment company’s streaming platform, you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer. After filming two episodes of the reboot, Terri Minsky, the original creator and showrunner of Lizzie McGuire, took leave of the whole thing. “Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series. After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. None of the cast members has broken their silence on the show’s hiatus. DON’T EXPECT THE CROWN TO TOUCH HARRY AND MEGHAN’S ROYAL EXIT
SHAMELESS RENEWED FOR 11TH (AND FINAL!) SEASON
WE’RE only halfway through the reported six seasons of Netflix’s popular royal drama The Crown, but viewers are already speculating on what the series will explore when it gets closer to Queen Elizabeth II’s present-day story. Apparently, what we can rule out is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit ‒ in fact, any recent royal history can be taken out of the equation. “To be honest, whatever the life of The Crown is after where we are now, I doubt we’ll ever go as far into the present day,” executive producer Suzanne Mackie says. The show’s third season saw Olivia Colman win a Golden Globe in the Best Actress In A Drama TV Series category for her portrayal off Queen Elizabeth II and she, alongside cast members Helena Bonham-Carter, Tobias Menzies, Erin Doherty and Josh O’Connor have already shot the show’s upcoming fourth season which is expected to premiere later this year.

But the star says that her new role on The Queen is her best work yet. “Maintaining an American dialect, while also tapping into and becoming a mentally unstable character with a deep, traumatic and troubling past, has been so fulfilling to play,” she says, adding, “Something in me shifted. I was set to leave a mark through this role and give it my absolute all, and the audience will see a shift in me through my craft. SPOTLIGHT REVIEWS BY EL BROIDE COUNTRY DEMI LEE MOORE
LOCAL songstress Demi Lee Moore’s debut album Mis Eet Slaap Herhaall became one of the highest-selling albums of 2018, and now she’s back with her highly-anticipated followup album Country. Despite the expectation to deliver an album that would be just as successful as her debut, the songstress opted to go in a different route from that of the first, and has rerecorded some of her favourite country songs like Neon Moon, A Long And Happy Life, Queen Of Hearts and more; but the songs sound authentically Demi and not some sort of karaoke project – which is important when you look at the direction of a cover album. Demi has phenomenal vocals and you’re drawn to focus on every word she sings. She gives some of the best performances on this and reminds us why her career, though budding, has already been an impactful one. El’s Favourite Track: Queen Of Hearts

SPECTRUM WESTLIFE
EVERYDAY LIFE COLDPLAY
IRISH pop group Westlife is back with their first album since 2010’s Gravity, and they’re still very much the band we lost our hearts to in the beginning. This a pop record with the grace, growth and emotion ‒ which figures, considering the group has enlisted the songwriting skills of Ed Sheeran, James Arthur, James Bay and long-time producer Steve Mac. Vocally, the group is on top of their game and while the album pretty safe, it’s a great nostalgia trip. Spectrum isn’t ground breaking, but it’s an album one that’s easy to listen to and fans will certainly enjoy the new material. El’s Favourite Track: Better Man
COLDPLAY has embarked on a new era with their latest album Everyday Life, featuring two eight-track parts: Sunrise and Sunset, t and what can we say? They’re incredible ‒ certainly one of the most significant pop/rock groups of our time. Coldplay are storytellers and Everyday is filled with obsevations of life’s beauty and injustices, with Chris Martin’s inimitable vocals as transfixing as ever, and his willingness to continually experiment and step outside of his comfort zone something that makes each of the band’s offerings a pure pleasure to listen to. El’s Favourite Track: Daddy

RUNPEE
HONESTLY, this is one of the most outrageous apps we’ve discovered over the past few months – and it’s one we never knew we always wanted. Because there’s nothing worse for cinema-goers than an inconvenient nature call, having to run out to take a tinkle and missing out on important moments during the film! With RunPee, that’s a thing of the past, The team behind the app go and watch all major releases and highlight the right time to sneak away for a bathroom break. The app comes with a timer: you start it when the movie begins, and then it will vibrate before each designated pee time. What’s more, the app updates you with what you’re missing during your trip to the loo too!
WHILE we find ourselves starring in The One Where We Wait For A Reunion we can always satisfy our nostalgia with reruns and this gem of a book from pop culture historian Saul Austerlitz. In Still Friends, Saul looks back at the show’s 10 years and gives fans insight into their favourite characters and episodes with insider information. Saul’s spoken to the show’s creators, cast members and industry insiders to get a deeper understanding of the cultural phenomenon that is Friends and you can expect talk of trivia contests, prom videos, trips to London, Super Bowls, lesbian weddings, wildly popular hairstyles, superstar cameos, mad dashes to the airport and million-dollar contracts. A must-read for any Friends fanatic.

THIS is the world’s most entertaining ‒ and useless ‒ self-help guide! For any task you might want to do, there’s a right way, a wrong way, and a way so monumentally complex, excessive, and inadvisable that no one would ever try it. In his new book ‘How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems’, Randall Munroe goes for the third option, giving readers a different outlook on just how many approaches there are to a problem we encounter. Whether it’s describing how to tell you if you’re a millennial or baby boomer by measuring the radioactivity of your teeth, or giving tips for taking a selfie using a telescope, How To is outrageous and hilarious in equal measure.

CELEB CROSSWORD...
CODEBREAKERS require inspired guesswork. They are crosswords without clues. Every letter of the alphabet is used (you might find it useful to cross out the letters located by the grid as you find them) and each letter has its own number. In this puzzle ‘5’ has the letter ‘H’ so a useful start is to insert ‘H’ in all the boxes that contain the number ‘5’. Vowels appear at least once in a word but letters such as and are few. ‘Z’ ‘X’
