Happy New Year everyone (unless you got your copy early) and welcome to the February issue of Performance Audi. Written in November and released in late December, depending on if you’re getting your four-ringed fix from a shop, on subscription or on download. Confused? Yep, me too! The world of publishing can be a strange place at times. So... it’s 2020, which seems pretty mental to me, as it doesn’t seem that long ago, I was celebrating 2010! Then again, a quick look on Facebook memories and seeing myself ten years younger shows that maybe it’s been longer than I think. Anyway, back to the present, I don’t know what it is about the year 2020, maybe I’ve watched too many sci-fi films, but it sounds so damn futuristic. Being a child of the ‘80s who was bought up on Knight Rider and Back to the Future, I’ve got to admit, I kind of thought we’d all have flying and talking cars by now. Though I guess we do kind of have the latter, does Siri on Apple Car Play count as a talking car? Anyway, we may not be in flying Audis yet, but this month we do take a glimpse into the future of modifying with a trip to the biggest, craziest and most important car show of the whole year. That’s right, the Specialty Equipment Market Association or SEMA as it’s more commonly known. And while the show takes place in early November, it’ll have a massive effect on 2020, as it’s ‘the place’ where what’s hot and happening in car tuning is previewed, released and unleashed on the world. It’s also in Sin City, the place where you can lose your life’s savings in a casino in minutes and cut your life expectancy in half due to all the excessive partying and XXL burgers! Talking of supersizing, you may notice the mag is a bit bigger this month and that’s because we’ve gone large to accommodate our TT special. We’ve got Michael Slater’s 700bhp TT RS, one of the cleanest, coolest, carbon clad 8S’ in the UK, along with two guides to tell you everything you need to know about buying an 8J or 8S, plus 10 things you might not know about the TT. Away from this, we have a B8 RS4 with a C7 RS6 engine, Thomas Reidl’s big and boxy 450bhp Audi 200 20v Quattro, and also Stuart Davis’ show-winning S3, one of our favourite cars of 2019. And, a lot of it was built in a tent. Yes really! There’s also a trip to Ultimate Stance, the latest products for your Audi and a whole lot more… Enjoy the issue

ribal behaviour has always been at the heart of modifying culture. Fans of Japanese tuning will be well versed in the history of the bōsōzoku, for example; to outsiders, this is a subculture that often takes a lot of explaining. Literally meaning ‘reckless tribe’, the ethos traces its roots back to illegal motorcycle street-racers of the 1950s, their outrageously styled bikes tearing up the streets of suburban Japan with little regard for safety or the law. Similarly, the kanjozoku were outlaws in Honda Civics whose modus operandi was to go out on the expressways and try to outrun the police for kicks. Fast-forward to Hollywood in the early2000s and we find Dom Toretto and his cronies telling pizza boys that the street’s closed so they can engage the NOS and tear up the tarmac. So much of this behaviour comes down to camaraderie and togetherness. So it is with RS Hardcore, a German tuner collective founded in the nineties. Today, their primary goal is to take contemporary Audis and make them ludicrously fast, with aggressive styling to match. Regular readers will remember their Imola Yellow first-gen S3 from a few months back, which was running 730bhp. Well, the B8 RS4 you see here is another recent product of this offbeat tuner coven’s own personal skunkworks – and you’ll note that, as with the S3, we’re not running an owner profile box alongside this feature. Because this build isn’t attributable to one individual – its spirit and

Performance Audi

soul are owned by the group, they’re the ones who grafted to bring it into being, and the glory is all of theirs to share. Martin Lanzinger is the de facto figurehead of the tribe, so it’s his brains we’re picking to clue ourselves up on the specifics of the tale here, and it comes from an interesting starting point. “It’s a limited edition RS4 Nogaro Selection that we bought from an Audi dealer,” he explains. And this is intriguing, as Audi die-hards are generally quite keen on the preservation and salvation of limited editions. This particular one was launched in 2014 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the RS2, wearing a tribute paint shade of Nogaro Blue with a little extra pearl thrown into the mix. It had a few tasteful stylistic tweaks, like matte black roof rails, gloss black grille and window surrounds, and half-leather seats with THE MIGHTY BOOST “The hardest part of the build was actually getting it to run,” says Martin. “Making the ECU run the engine and transmission when they’re in the wrong car, it’s tricky; they’re communicating with each other all the time, so the real hurdle is making the immobiliser work correctly and not shut down the car all the time.” And now that it’s working, complete with custom cooling system and exhaust setup, is stock RS6 power enough to keep the RS Hardcore guys satisfied? “No, there’ll be more power in the future,” Martin smiles. “I think we’ll start with the turbos…”

blue Alcantara inserts to mimic those of the old RS2. The blue theme was rife throughout, with the leather having blue stitching, the carpets getting blue piping, and even blue strands woven through the carbon fibre trim. It cost about £8,000 more than a regular RS4 when new, so it’s fair to say this is a very rare and revered beast in RS circles. So presumably this particular Nogaro Selection RS4 was a bit rough and ready then, and tearing it apart to replace the drivetrain was the only sensible thing to do? “No, not really,” Martin shrugs. “When it came to RS Hardcore it was nearly new, with just 14,000km on the clock.” Why pull out that stellar 4.2-litre FSI V8, then? “Well, some English guys had put an RS6 engine in a B7 RS4,”

he reasons, “so the bar had been set and we wanted to raise it higher. We bought this car specifically for the purpose of carrying out this engine swap.” Clearly there’s no standing on ceremony here. You see, for all the RS4’s merits, for its staggering performance, its 450bhp and sub-5-second 0-62mph time, the idea of shoving a quart into a pint pot was always the game-plan. And the headline notion was to take the twin-turbo 4.0-litre TFSI V8 from the C7-generation RS6 and turn the blue bruiser up to eleven. It’s an incredibly bold idea, as the TFSI lump kicks out 553bhp in stock form, along with a brutal 516lb.ft of torque, and the notion of taking a cutting-edge motor and replacing it with another from the same stable that’s amped up

011

AUDI RS4 Right: The 8-speed Tiptronic transmission has been dropped in from a C7 RS6

to the next level is not to be taken lightly. This isn’t like it was in the old days, when you’d just hoik out your carb-fed SOHC on a home-made engine crane and drop a bigger motor in – nowadays such things take some serious qualifications in electrical engineering simply to get the wiring to work, let alone getting the powertrain to actually fit. Thankfully, the guys had this mapped out from day one, and they knew that there’d be room given that they were swapping out one V8 for another; “the reason we chose the B8, aside from the gauntlet having being thrown down, was that we knew there’d be space for the C7’s engine,” says Martin. However, despite the conversion being the whole point of the project from the beginning, that wasn’t the first thing they did. No, there was something quite important to take care of first of all, and that concerns the way the thing sits. At first glance it’d be natural to assume that this car is bagged, as its low-slung stance appears to suggest that it’s aired out over those oversized 21-inch ADV.1 rims. But no – somewhat unbelievably, this full-fat wagon is rolling static. How has this been achieved? It’s all down to the engineering ingenuity of Gepfeffert, a name you’ve almost certainly come across in relation to the Euro tuning scene. What these suspension eggheads do is to take high-quality KW coilovers and artfully re-configure them to allow the cars in question to run ultra-low without compromising any of the inherent

Performance Audi

handling characteristics of the high-performance upgrade setup. Naturally this brings with it its own clearance issues, hence why the RS4 is now wearing subtly wider front wings from Muecke to allow a bit more steering angle, and the overall effect is utterly devastating. The way this Audi prowls is supremely menacing, like it’s hoovering up the tarmac in the hunt for fresh meat. Of course, low-and-slow cruising was never this car’s bag. And that’s where the infusion of extra power comes in. “Almost all of the conversion work was done in house, working alongside PW Racing,” Martin explains. “There was sufficient space in the bay for the TFSI motor to go in, but we had to modify things to make it all work – the entire cooling system is custom, and of

AUDI RS4 B8 AVANT

“Of course, low-and-slow cruising was never this car’s bag. And that’s where the infusion of extra power comes in”

course we had to make up a custom exhaust system to fit too. And what we’re particularly proud of is that this is the first car on the planet to have not just the RS6 TFSI swap, but its native ECU and C7 8-speed Tiptronic transmission too.” The amount of bespoke work and sheer cunning to make all this possible is frankly mind-boggling, as modern cars are famously recalcitrant when it comes to changing even the tiniest electronic components, let alone a full-on heart transplant. This engine and transmission operate just as they should, squeezed into a smaller frame than they were never designed for, but perhaps the real achievement is that it all behaves like it was always meant to be there – it starts and idles like a brand new car as well as performing like one, all the dials work properly and it doesn’t throw up a whole bunch of warning lights all the time. This has been built properly. “Our plan all along was to do it as if Audi themselves had done it,” Martin explains. So that’s why there’s no crazy shaved bay or custom wire tucks, it all looks OEM. The genius of this build is that it tricks you into thinking it’s something it’s not – at first glance, you might think it’s simply a stock RS4 running on big wheels and air-ride. It’s only when you dig beneath the surface and realise that it’s rolling static and running an RS6 drivetrain that your mind gets comprehensively blown.

Yes, that is a pair of genuine R8 seats

013

AUDI RS4 B8 AVANT

“It looks and drives OEM, and we’re proud of that,” he grins, casting a cheeky bit of side-eye at his damnlow stance and grinning further. “We added the carbon Muecke wings for practical reasons, plus a few trim pieces from RS Carbon just because we wanted to, but it’s all been an exercise in keeping it factory-looking.” With great power comes great responsibility, as we know, so as well as pillaging the C7 RS6 for its drivetrain, the team also swapped in the mighty carbon-ceramic brakes to sit behind those monster rims, and it all just adds to the startling effect. For those who know what they’re looking for, this is just the build that keeps on giving. “We love it when people look at the engine compartment and don’t immediately recognise what they’re seeing,” Martin enthuses. “Usually after a few seconds they’ll turn to their friends and say ‘TFSI?’ – so they’re really surprised, and we love that reaction. Really, we at RS Hardcore just love building what seems impossible; creating what we love and having good times with our bros in the shop.” And that’s the very essence of tribal tuning. These guys already have the next builds in the works, and you can be damn sure we’ll be bringing them to you as soon as they’re done; see, this is as much Fast & Furious as it is bōsō or kanjo – it’s all about kicking back with your crew and making some memories. The fact that RS Hardcore are also building some of Europe’s coolest Audis is merely a happy by-product. ■ 014

eaturing original Polizei car markings, flashing blue lights, a hefty 530bhp and 508lb-ft this is no ordinary police car. In fact it’s not a police car, nope, it’s this year’s campaign vehicle for TUNE IT! SAFE! An initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and the German Association of Automobile Tuners. The Polizei RS4-R was built by ABT Sportsline, as the poster-boy for the German safe tuning initiative launched at the recent Essen show. The potent Avant, which accelerates from 0 to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 174mph features some serious upgrades over the

standard 450bhp RS4 B9, let alone your average German police car. Features include an ABT Engine Control specially developed by ABT Sportsline, including an additional water cooler and air intake, plus a high-performance sport exhaust system with four carbon tailpipes and 20-inch ABT wheels. The extensive aerodynamics package boasts an ABT front lip, front canards, a front grille with RS4-R

logo and a rear skirt add-on. The Bavarian tuning company also improved the already excellent standard suspension with ABT sport stabilizers and height adjustable suspension springs. Unfortunately despite its hot pursuit potential, this Avant will not be chasing German criminals down the Autobahn, shame as it would be worth getting nicked just for a ride.

MILLTEK SPORT AUDI RS6 C7 EXHAUST SYSTEMS It’s fair to say the beloved supercarslaying RS6 has done much to change the performance landscape over the last few years. Its combination of style, space and serious pace has won the hearts of many owners and bystanders. Immense levels of performance are paired with classic, sure-footed quattro handling, all wrapped up in a typically refined and understated body. And, those fortunate enough to own a RS6 C7 will no doubt be excited to learn that the model is now well catered for by the gods of performance exhaust systems, Milltek Sport. Milltek’s exhaust offering for the C7 generation can be specified in the firm’s customary, open-ended manner, giving buyers the freedom to design the system best suited to their requirements. It begins with a choice of core systems, either a large-bore downpipe and de-cat (a product intended for the race/ track market), or a large bore cast downpipe and high-flow sports cat. Choose from either a full system or just cat back, resonated, non-resonated, EC approved, or not – plus a plethora of helpful options like the Valvesonic rear silencer that allows your choice of system to integrate seamlessly with all switchable drive modes on your RS6. There are literally dozens of combinations, dependent only on the sound and legality requirements of the owner. A choice of oval twin tail pipe options; Cerakote black or polished finishes, finishes the system to

perfection. In all cases, system diameters are 2.75-inch (69.85mm) for optimum flow. Obviously, the Audi RS6 is a beautifully engineered car, one that demands that any aftermarket product bolted to it be at least as well engineered as the OE equivalent, and the Milltek Sport cat-back exhaust more than delivers in this respect. Not only is it made from aerospace grade, non-magnetic stainless steel, the Milltek system has been proven to offer subtle increases in both power and torque, plus a soundtrack that really does need to be witnessed and heard to be fully appreciated! TRIED & TESTED

GMC 18V OSCILLATING MULTI-TOOL

Even if you’re lucky enough to have a garage and don’t have to work on your drive, it’s still pretty obvious that most corded power tools suck when it comes to cars. It’s the reason we rarely plug in a drill nowadays, and the best impact wrenches come with big ass batteries attached to the bottom. But what about the multi-tools favoured by everyone from Bob the Builder to Nick Knowles, and just about every pro mechanic, fabricator and trimmer in between? Well, there are a few cordless items out there, usually either cheap and not very powerful, or useful but seriously expensive. But that’s where this all-new 18Volt unit from GMC bucks the trend – this one seems to have it all…

THE PRODUCT

Multi tools are supposed to be versatile, but this one is more versatile than most simply because it’s cordless. But that’s not the whole story, it’s a bloody powerful bit of kit. The 18V battery is exactly the same as the 1.5Ah Li-Ion unit used in GMC’s drill/impact driver combi pack that we tested previously. And very good they were too. It also makes this the perfect add-on if you already have those, or anything else in the GMC 18V range. Anyway, the real point is that the 18V battery puts this one firmly in the professional class. These batteries not only have a handy LED indicator, and they charge in an hour, but if you’re in the trade and need to run them constantly for days on end, they’re also upgradable with 2, 3 or 4Ah options. On to the actual body of the unit and the professional qualities become even more apparent. Constructed from impact-resistant materials, it’s just as solid as it looks, perfect for chucking around the workshop or bouncing about in your boot.

THE VERDICT

The Global Machinery Company is an Aussie firm that distributes here in the UK. And, like most of our cousins from Down Under, they’re not exactly subtle when it comes to power and toughness. That goes as much for their cars as much as it does for their tools. GMC are Aussie all over, they don’t like to mess about, their game really is all about no nonsense kit with the emphasis on being rugged and powerful enough for trade users. With a quick test it’s obvious that there’s plenty of grunt here. With the cutting blade attached (which is no doubt the most popular accessory) it’ll make short work of wood, metal and plastic. But it’s also nice that it’s not just about sheer power - there’s some lovely little features that show plenty of finesse too. The rubberised grips are, apparently, designed to reduce vibrations and fatigue, and there’s also variable speeds. But, hands down the best feature in my book, is the quick release mechanism that makes changing accessories a matter of a couple of seconds. There’s no mucking about with spanners or hex keys to remove blades or sanding pads, simply flip the leaver, slot in your chosen accessory and away you go. Cutter, sander, scraper, router, plunge saw, this versatile item is easily everything you want from a multi-tool.

CONCLUSION:

A master bit of toolage that’s just as suited to us modifiers as it is for everyday professional use. If you can’t see plenty of uses for this one, you simply don’t belong in a workshop. Price £93 www.gmctools.com

When the Audi TT concept car was first unveiled to the public way back in 1995, it was met with huge acclaim. And when the TT type 8N first went on sale in 1998, it quickly became one of the most popular sports cars in its class. An icon was born. In 2006, the second-generation TT 8J launched. With Audi Space Frame technology, it was 90kg lighter than the first-gen model – which translated into improved driveability as it swept the board and took award after award. Then, in 2014 the third-generation TT 8S was unleashed. Unique, distinctive and unmistakably Audi as it continued to define the notion of what a modern sports car should be. It’s an astonishing line up, so, what better way to celebrate than a packed TT special…

The evolution of the Audi TT as a model has been fascinating to observe. The key lure of this compact little coupe from the very start has always been the way it looks – the fundamental truth here is that the TT is pretty much the perfect design for a car in this segment: sublime proportions, gorgeous detailing, and just the right mix of retro styling cues and forward-thinking crispness. The Mk1’s aged superbly, and the Mk2 and Mk3 have sensitively and sympathetically continued the concept rather than radically reworking it. Of course, it’s an inherent part of the evolutionary process that sometimes unexpected things happen. Every now and then an animal will grow an extra arm or an experimental tail or a spurious poison sac, and that’s cool – it’s why creatures first crawled out of the seas and onto the land in the first place. And it’s fair to say that the Mk2 Audi TT took quite a few people by surprise when it evolved from potent sports car to face-melting lunatic with the application of the RS badge. Shoehorning in a 2.5 TFSI 5-pot broke all the rules, and its 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds rocketed it into premium sports territory, even knocking on the door of supercars. When the Mk3 went into production in 2014, there was no RS variant at launch, and it was at this moment in time that Michael Slater wandered into the TT arena, eyeing up the performance models within the smoking crucible and finding the TTS to be most suited to his needs. Michael’s a man of diverse automotive enthusiasms, having dabbled in a number of interesting custom and performance areas before arriving with us at the Audi brand. “I’ve been a petrolhead ever since my uncle used to take me to classic American custom car shows in the early ’80s,” he explains. “My first project

was a 1380 Mini, which seems a lifetime ago now. I’ll never forget how it used to gap Ford Escort RS2000s and Renault 5 GT Turbos of the time!” Fast-forward deep into the 21st-century, and we find him trading in his Mk7 Golf for a TTS, although when the Mk3 TT RS variant finally launched it was as if all the stars simultaneously aligned into four interlocking rings and started shining down right onto Michael’s driveway. He knew what he had to do, and the car we have in Si’s studio today is the gleaming evidence. Fate demanded that this guy buy himself an RS, and who was he to refuse? “With the vision I had in mind for the project, it was an easy decision to go for the TT RS,” he grins. “I put my order in at the dealer, and had the car collected from Oldham Audi by my guys at Central Detailing Manchester. They took care of the protection straight away, by way of ceramic coating, PPF and so on; from day one the RS has been treated with the utmost respect.” Michael certainly had fun ticking the option boxes too. The exterior is finished in Black Panther paint, which suits the TT beautifully and really works with the diamond-cut 7-spoke 20-inch wheels in their anthracite and dark smoke lacquer finish. He also optioned the carbon-ceramic brakes, which come with mighty 8-pot Brembo calipers at the business end, along with the raucous Audi Sport exhaust system. Inside, we find the

Michael has a large and talented cast of characters to thank for the creation of this magniicent RS: “Many thanks to the JBS team for burning the midnight oil on several occasions to get the Stage 3 build and tune spot on,” he enthuses. “And thanks also to Eventuri for providing a prototype Stage 3 induction kit prior to delivering the inished article – a quality and performance unparalleled. Iroz for pushing through just about every boundary possible and delivering the IMS850 turbo, which never fails to deliver, and Malaka for doing the same and sending over the upgraded hose kit – again, super quality. Over the pond here in the UK we have learnt so much from those guys! Thank you to BlackGlass Cheshire for working out of hours to upgrade and reine the tints and decals at short notice. And last but by no means least, Automotive Passion for letting me input into the bonnet design, truly making this a one-of-one RS with the highest quality carbon ibre – they provided the bonnet, rear spoiler and sideskirts.”

Right from the get-go, this was a very serious machine. 394bhp and 354lb. ft straight out of the box, with all the desirable options. Of course, for a seasoned modifier like this, such a thing would only ever be a starting point. “I was heavily influenced by @Doczilla and the F7LTHY brand,” he explains. “This is all about a

community of folks who share the passion for speed, beauty, and artistic expression. The vision is straight from the heart; life’s not perfect and it’s definitely about the journey - sometimes getting it right, sometimes stumbling along the way. The whole #Whatsnext ethos is about the mindset to keep chasing your dream.” We can relate to that – the legendary Doczilla (or JJ Dubec MD, to his mother) is a Canadian tuning supremo, a self-made man with a string of scene-busting SEMA builds to his name, and he’s a logical figure to wish to emulate. And with this inspiration carrying him, Michael knew precisely what he wanted to achieve with the RS; indeed, he was so clear on what he wanted, he found himself well ahead of the curve and waiting for the aftermarket tuning industry to catch up! “The biggest hurdle with this build was getting used to the fact that development takes time,” he laughs. “When I first got the car, the Mk3 was way ahead of the technology – so all the Mk2 TT RS folks were at Stage 3 and having heaps of fun, while I had to wait and let things develop. Not everything that comes to market is the best quality either, so sometimes it’s better to wait a little longer and get it done right rather than done fast.” This a very sensible outlook, and the most logical way to achieve what he’d set out to with this car. “Mostly this was about fast road driveability rather than building an

out-and-out dragstrip car,” Michael continues. “Keeping the OEM+ look is tricky to get just right as well. But the RS was going to Stage 3 from day one, that was always the vision. I’ve always balanced mechanical mods with visual refinement, it has to be a complete package.” Now that the industry’s had time to catch up with his dreams, Michael’s running a pretty stellar setup. The TFSI motor today runs an Iroz IMS850 turbo, complemented by a Wagner Tuning Competition Evo3 intercooler, Eventuri Stage 3 induction kit, and a full suite of Malaka Motorsport silicone hoses. That boisterous Audi Sport exhaust system has been further augmented by a Rogue Performance downpipe and decat pipe, making sounds that you feel in your chest (and the very depths of your soul) as much as hear. With a custom JBS Stage 3 tune, the headline figure is now a nice round 700bhp, which is frankly astonishing, backed up by a torque figure that’s had to be capped at 556lb.ft to stop the RS from actually rucking up the tarmac like a threadbare hallway rug with all four of its 255-section Michelins. JBS also remapped the DSG trans to suit, and the result is a weaponised brute that will see off any challenger short of an Aventador (and it’d certainly give that something to think about) while also cunningly retaining pleasant day-to-day driveability. It’s like a hardcore race car you can happily trundle to the shops in. This perky little poppet ticks a lot of boxes. Now, while Audi saw fit to imbue the TT RS with a fabulous chassis, such things can always be further improved. The colossal OEM Brembo carbon-ceramics remain at the front, but Michael’s upgraded the rear brakes to a Vagbremtechnic arrangement with 356mm RS7 cross-drilled wavy discs and Pagid pads. There’s also an adjustable 034 Motorsport rear anti-roll bar, and it’s all suspended by a set of KW Variant 3 coilovers, a setup

universally loved by everyone we know who’s ever run it. And because Michael’s fondness for modding is just as much about ‘show’ as ‘go’, he’s put a lot of careful thought into the RS’s appearance. Given that he’d originally specced the carbon pack, along with that awesome carbon rear brace that we just can’t stop looking at with heart-emoji eyes, this seemed like a sensible theme to continue. Thanks to carbon specialists CarbonfibreIt, this car’s now rocking custom matching seat backs along with a carbon fuel filler and wheel centre caps. The exterior’s a positive riot of carbon, you’ll find the racy weave making up the Automotive Passion bonnet, rear spoiler, sideskirts, canards, and much more besides. So we’re talking biblical performance, and also fabulously detailed aesthetics, all neatly resolved in one sublime package. When the Mk1 TT first came on the scene, and the fieriest version was the 225, we were well impressed – but this? This is just insane. Audi’s own interpretation of what the Mk3 TT RS should be is unhinged enough, but what Michael’s achieved here is the stuff of dreams. A practical daily-driver coupe with supercar performance. “Yes, I do drive it every day,” Michael assures us, with a broad smile. “People seem to love it too; everyone’s reaction is different but always positive. They love the look, plus the fact that under the bonnet it’s got the powertrain to back up the visual statement.” So we can say with some confidence that it’s mission accomplished. The ultimate evolution of an already highly-evolved being. ■ 040

The roadster didn’t go on sale until late 2006 Words Matthew Bell

AUDI TT MK2 BUYING GUIDE We know the Mk1 is a bargain, but Mk2s are now creeping into budget for most, we check out what you need to know before parting ways with your cash.

T

he Mk1 was something of a revelation. We mentioned in our Mk1 guide (issue 55) that cars simply don’t go into production in what is essentially concept form. So how does a manufacturer follow that? It does so by producing a car with cleaner lines, but thoroughly refreshing it to incorporate the latest technology, say hello to the Mk2 TT. While the Mk1 made do with a Golf platform that in some ways hindered its abilities, the 2006-launched Mk2 got a slightly more bespoke package in the form of an aluminium and steel Audi space frame based on the PQ35 platform, otherwise known as the A5. You might be thinking that’s a car too big for this application, but in truth the Mk2 offered sharper handling and driver involvement to give a more rewarding package overall.

042

Performance Audi

As Audi enthusiasts you’ll know that you got a whole host of engine choices, just like you do on all models. This allows you to properly decide what suits your needs. First up, Audi ditched the Mk1’s 1.8-litre turbo four-pot in favour of the 2.0-litre TFSI found in the Golf GTI. This meant that the starting block for performance on the TT when launched in 2006 was 200bhp, 0-62mph in 6.4 seconds and 150mph top speed. This was exclusively in coupé form to begin with, the roadsters didn’t go on sale until the tail end of 2006, some eight months after the coupé launched. The roadsters got the same engine and transmission options as offered on the coupé models. Next up, that peach of an engine from the Mk1, the 3.2-litre V6, was carried across. Performance was rated at a healthy 250bhp with figures claiming a 0-62mph sprint time of just 5.7 seconds

TT MK2 BUYING GUIDE

the model that followed that not only got Audi and TT enthusiasts excited, but the motoring world too, welcome, then, the TT RS. The long-awaited car was teased for some time before it arrived in 2009 and it came with that whopping 2.5-litre five-pot that hit the sweet spot in terms of performance as well as that exotic noise. Performance was a colossal 340bhp taking the 0-62mph down to 4.4 seconds and the top speed up to 174mph (if the first owner opted to have the speed limited lifted). Now the TT was a car that had gorgeous lines as well as a peach of an engine that when modified could worry supercars.

Mated to the DSG gearbox and quattro system, gear shifts were sharp and traction was rarely an issue. How do you follow a 2.5-litre fivepot? With a 1.8-litre TFSI, of course. It’s confusing how Audi chooses to release products in an unusual timeline, but that’s what it is. This was now the baby of the range, and the most affordable. The quattro was replaced with FWD and power was a humble 160bhp. The following year, 2010, the entire range got a mid-life update. This brought in LED daytime running lights as standard for all models badged S Line, while the

Roof off, foot down, happy days! and electronically-limited 155mph top speed. One thing to note here, all V6s were equipped with quattro, while the lesser-powered 2.0-litre came only in FWD application. That’s crucial when choosing which model takes your fancy. Following the launch of the roadster late in 2006, the TTS arrived. This boosted power to 268bhp and was fitted again only with quattro meaning your 0-62mph time was now 5.4 seconds (top speed was again limited to 155mph). The roadster version was marginally slower, but the difference is negligible. Another thing to note here, all TTS models were fitted with Audi’s adaptive magnetic damping system. While the clever damping system isn’t known to be a common problem, fixing any issues can be expensive so do take that into account. Those wanting the sports car lifestyle but with the extra economy could do so following the launch of the TTS thanks to a 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 170bhp. But it’s

2.0-litre TFSI engines got a spruce up in performance, lifting power from 200bhp to 211bhp and giving all non-RS models a sport button to adjust throttle sensors. At the top of the tree for the Mk2 TT was the TT RS Plus, a designation that Audi would later go on to use on its R8 models. This lifted power over the already bonkers 340bhp to 360bhp. Not too shabby for a so called hairdresser’s car, eh? With the history out of the way, it’s time to look at what you should be looking out for when buying one. The good news is that because it’s a 2006+ car, the oldest examples are only 13 years old; VagCom diagnostics tool can be your best friend if you know how to use it. Most of the information about the car can be read through the tool, this includes the current wear on the DSG ‘box, which is crucial as we know problems with the ‘box can be rather expensive. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that because the car isn’t old you shouldn’t be too worried about missing history or slight problem areas. History on

044

any car is always key; the car you’re looking at may only be 7 years old, but if it’s missed the last two major services and has been bashed off the limiter half of its life, you don’t want to be the person that picks up the invoice for the problems when it eventually breaks.

Engines You’ll be pleased to hear that all five engines have proven to be mostly reliable over the years should servicing have been adhered to. The intervals for such are 19,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first. If you’re looking at the 2.0-litre models, note

TT MK2 BUYING GUIDE

Transmission

that cambelts should have been changed at 75,000 miles, if the car you’re looking at is coming up to that milestone, the cost of replacement isn’t astronomical, but between £300 and £500 (depending on independent or main dealer) and could be a strong bargaining tool when negotiating. Remember, there are two different 2.0-litre engines, one before and one after 2010. The earlier cars were fitted with the EA113 engine, which is cambelt driven, the latter is the EA888 engine, which is chain driven. Both are tuneable, and both are known to be reliable. Ignition coil packs are one of the known problems and can cause misfiring. You’ll notice this if the engine isn’t running smoothly or if the engine fails altogether. Each cylinder carries a coil pack and that’ll set you back around £35 per pack, so bear that in mind. Owners have noted that the TT can be fairly heavy on oil use, so this shouldn’t be cause for concern, just something to be wary of before buying one.

The majority of Mk2 TTs were sold with the DSG gearbox. This is no bad thing as the DSG system is a sophisticated and slick operating machine, when it works. Audi did recall Mk2s built between August and September 2009 for incorrect clutch temperature readings by the ECU, which in turn caused the clutches to disengage and lose drive. Check the history to make sure that’s been completed. Elsewhere, the S Tronic DSG gearboxes can also be troublesome at low speeds, if one starts to stutter or hesitate, you’ve got a problem on your hands. It’s advised that once getting the engine and gearbox up to temperature on your test drive, slow right down and crawl, listening out for any signs

of damage, you’ll start to kangaroo if there’s a major problem. Audi specialists pinpointed the problem to the Mechatronic control unit, which will either need rebuilding or replacing at the tune of nearly £1000, but a specialist auto-electrician would have it done for under half that price. As for manual owners, the clutch isn’t high on your problems list. The clutch should have been replaced at 60,000 miles. Remember, the quattro powered cars were the more powerful models and thus will most likely have been launched hard over the years, which is something to bear in mind for both the manual cars as well as the DSG equipped ones. On all quattro models, get a mechanic to check out the Haldex system, it has been

Suspension and brakes With the Mk2, Audi introduced a refreshed multi-link rear suspension system as well as MacPherson struts at the front end. Most of the models you’ll be looking at come with this set up, but as mentioned above, some were opted with the Magnetic Ride system. In truth, owners tend to think the sport setting with the Magnetic ride is too stiff

for UK roads, so this shouldn’t necessarily be at the top of your wish list, although some cars do carry a premium with this system. There was a recall on the Mk2 for cars built between May and July 2009 for the braking system, more notably the vacuum pipe on the servo that may become damaged. This was more of a precaution, rather than a necessity. The other thing to note with the brakes is a squeal coming from the front brakes at low speed. Some owners swapped out the discs and pads which did the trick.

According to owners, tyres are a huge issue with the TT. Not only do they wear far quicker on quattro models, but some owners opt for budget tyres. This is a big no as TTs are sensitive to tyres. Don’t cheap out, get yourself decent rubber. Note, the TT doesn’t come with a spare wheel or space-saver, instead it came with a compressor and repair kit. This is likely to be missing from the car you’re buying.

Interior When buying, do the usual checks. Make sure all of the dashboard lights, the radio, sat-nav, and windows work. If you’re looking at roadsters, check to make sure the roof folds away under its own power and seals shut when erecting. It sounds simple, but so many forget to check all of the electrical points. Why have a roadster if you can’t actually take the roof down? Make sure the roof is sealed, too. This is

most likely something to test after you’ve bought the car but ask the owner if it’s OK you test that the roof is sealed properly. Just use a hosepipe over the car and check for water in the boot and cabin. Wet door cards are a clear indication of a poor seal. It’s not an expensive fix, but not worth the hassle with so many cars on the market. Audi was generous with standard equipment on the TT, so you should find Bluetooth, air con and a flat-bottom steering wheel as standard. Don’t fall for adverts claiming these as extras. The satnav and Bose sound system were optional. Word of advice, don’t buy a TT if you plan on using the rear seats. It’s not suitable for anyone unless in use by a toddler.

between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, while the one you really want, the TT RS, will set you back at least £13k. We’d expect to pay more like £15k for a nice one.

Prices The best thing about the Mk2 is that prices have decreased considerably. Now, even a 3.2 is going to cost no more than £6,000, albeit this will be a high-mileage example. The 2.0-litre petrols are the cheapest by

Modifications So you’ve bought your new TT, now you want to make it your own. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be well on your way to creating a show-ready car with enough punch to back up its looks. It doesn’t matter which engine we’re looking at, choices for modifications come far and wide. That being said, we’ll start here with a TTS, which uses the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 272bhp on tap in standard form.

EXHAUST Downpipes - There’s a ton of options out there from some of the most well-known exhaust fabricators in the UK, so the choice is down to you. Scorpion offer a de-cat system or sports catalyst for under £300. Couple this with a map and you’ll be looking at the mid-300bhp range with the torque to match. You’ll also unlock some extra grunt in the form of sound, you might even gain a few pops and bangs along the way… Cat-back - You can either match a catback exhaust up with a fresh downpipe or you can just opt for a cat-back system and mate to the standard exhaust. You’ll see less gains overall, but you’ll free up a few ponies and transform the sound of the car. Milltek will be perfect for the job, livening up the sound without adding a silly amount of drone. Prices start at around £600.

SUSPENSION There are two ways you can go about doing this, either focus on creating the ultimate show car, or focus on creating a crisp handling street weapon. The first option will see you looking towards Air Lift performance. The other option will see you looking at the likes of Bilstein or KW.

048

Performance Audi

If your primary focus is road driving, your best bet will be a spring and damper set up from Bilstein. The B14 kit retains some level of comfort on the road, but will allow you to take part in the odd track day without problem. KW, on the other hand, will be much more focused for track work with 30way adjustable damping. Prices for the KW system sits at around £1700, while the B14 kit comes in cheaper at £900.

WHEELS Again, options are far and wide here, but we’re going to focus on some APR flow formed wheels that can be bought in either Gunmetal Grey or Hyper Silver from somewhere like Awesome GTI. The lighter, classic motorsport look will transform the appearance while also helping to shed a few pounds in the weight category. The best thing is that these look at home on the racetrack or centre stage at a show.

ECU There’s a few choices out there for ECU tuning, all of whom promise similar power figures and have become household names in the VAG tuning world, we’re of course

talking about APR, MRC and Revo. A simple ECU tweak can see gains up to 300bhp. However, couple the map with the upgrades listed before and a new air intake and you can see more like 330bhp. For that extra bit more, Revo recommend an uprated high-pressure fuel pump as well as an uprated intercooler to see power up to around 365bhp. If you’ve got a DSG gearbox, don’t forget that the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) can also be updated giving sharper gear changes and higher RPM limits.

INTERIOR Last but not least, the interior. Those rear seats have got to go. They’re just no good for regular sized humans. You could then transform the rear with a half cage for that Clubsport look, or go the opposite direction with a new entertainment system. ■

TEN THINGS YOU (PROBABLY) DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE TT

050

Performance Audi

Launched in 1998, the Audi TT quickly grew into a bona fide modern classic. It’s not just a beautifully engineered and engaging sports car, it’s a style icon with a bulletproof drivetrain, gorgeous appointments, and a genuinely entertaining driving experience. Throughout its evolving generations, there has always been a variety of spec options to choose from, ranging from the modestly-powered seafront cruiser to the hairy track-monster, meaning that there’s bound to be something in the range for you, whatever your motoring proclivities. The VAG model strategy through the 1990s and into the new millennium really was inspired; their generous platform-sharing and partsswapping meant they were able to offer a staggering array of cars which were all fundamentally the same underneath, so if the oil pump went on your Golf and your mechanic didn’t have one on the shelf, they could just grab one labelled ‘Octavia’ or ‘Léon’ or ‘A3’ instead. And that versatile A4 (PQ34) platform also spawned the TT, a slinky little roadster and coupé that immediately became a hero, able to harness proven engines from across the VAG-o-sphere. The fact that the TT’s now on its third generation demonstrates that the Group was on to something. So here we’re pulling together our top ten facts about the perky little Audi that you may not know – because these cars may be so popular that they’re a day-to-day sight on the roads the world over, but they still have their secrets…

TEN THINGS YOU (PROBABLY) DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE TT 1: IT’S A ROAD-GOING CONCEPT CAR If you look through the annals of automotive design history, one thing that becomes glaringly obvious is that road cars very rarely look much like the concept cars that spawned them. Consider the gorgeous concept of the Austin Allegro, compared to the hideous production car it actually became. The Audi TT, however, is almost identical to its early design sketches. It often surprises people to learn that the archetypal modern European coupe/roadster was actually penned in the USA, but the fact of the matter is that it was Volkswagen’s California design studio that came up with those sleek and swoopy lines. (This was the same team who created the VW Concept One, which became the New Beetle, so it’s safe to say they know their stuff.) The TT concept debuted at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show, and when production models hit the streets three years later, the buying public were able to sign on the line for a concept car of their very own.

2: IT HAS HARDCORE RACE CAR CREDENTIALS Anyone who doubts the sporting creds of the TT (and we can’t imagine the sort of lunacy that would lead one to such a conclusion, but these people are out there) need look no further than the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft series. Revered aftermarket tuners ABT Sportsline began campaigning the DTM back in 2000, in a TT-R racer that they’d developed in-house to take on the might of the Opel and Mercedes works teams. The success of the TT-R was frankly astonishing; the first outright wins came in early 2001, and in 2002 Laurent Aïello did what everyone said was impossible and won the championship. The runaway success of the formula meant that, from 2004, ABT Sportsline was able to compete as the official Audi works team – and it’s all thanks to the plucky TT.

3: THERE’S A COMICAL WARNING STICKER IN THE BOOT Any TT owner will admit that it’s a 2+2 rather than a fullfat four-seater. While the rear bench isn’t just a nicely upholstered place to put your coat and you can actually fit human beings in there, it’s probably best if they’re small ones. Indeed, the Mk1 TT’s manual states that the rear seats are only for use by people shorter than 4’9”, and we’d love to have been a fly on the wall in the testing lab while they were arriving at that official figure. We like to picture a long line of people of gradually increasing height taking it in turns to sit in the back while a straight-faced man in a lab coat with a clipboard repeatedly slams the boot. This painstaking research led to the creation of a sticker you’ll find inside the tailgate, reminding you not to bang it down onto the heads of tall passengers in case you accidentally cause something tragic to happen.

4: THE REAR SPOILER IS A SAFETY FEATURE Manufacturers love to evangelise about how their aerodynamic addenda is functional rather than being cynically affixed for stylistic purposes. While it’s more likely in most cases that OEM front and rear spoilers are there for the purposes of reducing lift rather than specifically creating downforce, car makers like to tell you how their splitters and flics are wind-tunnel tested to help reduce your lap times on track days or what-have-you. But in the case of the Mk1 TT, the boot spoiler was fitted for rather different reasons… at launch, the TT didn’t have a rear spoiler at all, but the car had to be recalled after a number of high-profile accidents. Autobahn lane-changes at 100mph+ speeds unsettled the handling and caused the car to spear off the road, so Audi reconfigured the ESP and fitted a spoiler that genuinely did have tangible benefits.

SPECIAL

5: THE TT RS REALLY WAS A GAME-CHANGER When the TT RS arrived for the Mk2 platform back in 2009, it ushered in a first for the TT oeuvre: a five-cylinder engine. While fours and sixes had always been the model’s weapons of choice, the addition of a five-pot to the mix helped to tie the RS model into all of the halcyon heritage that preceded it while also projecting performance potential into the future. But the TT RS was also a marked departure for the RS sub-brand: until that point, every one of Audi’s RS models since the epochal RS2 had been built at the quattro GmbH factory in Neckarsulm, but the TT RS was entirely assembled at the Gyor, Hungary facility alongside the regular TTs. This didn’t make it any less special, of course – it’s just an indicator of what a relentless upsetter of the applecart the TT is.

6: HUGH GRANT ROCKED THE TT LIKE A BOSS If you’ve read Nick Hornby’s About A Boy, you’ll know that the main character, Will, drove a Golf GTI. But the movie industry is all about aesthetics, and when the film adaptation came out it was decided that the thenfresh Mk1 TT was far more in-keeping with Will’s suave and fashion-forward cosmopolitan lifestyle. The eagleeyed will spot that it’s got a single exhaust so he didn’t plump for the full-fat 225, and there is a moment when he painfully spangs a rear wheel into a kerb at high speed, but nevertheless it’s a stylish addition to the film. Amusingly, Hugh Grant’s character has a go at getting a child seat in the back, manages to carry a physically improbable number of passengers, and gets really excited about chasing an ambulance with it. As would we all.

7: PESTER POWER WORKS The US market has always offered different variations of spec, trim and configuration to that which is found in Europe – it’s as much a cultural as an economic thing, there’s a hell of a lot of focus groups and flipcharts that go into deciding which models get sold where. But the TT enthusiasts of the USA strongly felt that Audi had got it wrong when the company decided not to sell the Mk2 TT RS in the States. With other markets receiving the hot five-cylinder tearaway from 2009, it was felt back at head office that it wouldn’t be a goer in America, but the people thought otherwise: an online petition was started, ultimately getting over 11,500 signatures, and in the third quarter of 2011 the TT RS finally arrived as an official US-market model.

8: THE TT OFFROAD SUGGESTED A BIZARRE NEW DIRECTION

TEN THINGS YOU (PROBABLY) DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE TT

The TT is many things, but you can’t really argue that it’s an off-roader. It just isn’t. Nevertheless, Audi doesn’t always think along rational lines, and the TT Offroad concept of 2014 suggested that perhaps it might be an idea to reconfigure the popular coupe as a high-riding SUV. In an age when seemingly everything is becoming more and more SUV-shaped perhaps this shouldn’t have been a surprise, but it certainly caused a few monocles to drop. The Offroad mated a hybrid system to the TFSI motor to offer 408bhp, and the body had an extra set of doors too. Is it still a TT? Not really… but it was unveiled at the 2014 Auto China show, which tells you all you need to know. The Chinese market has funny ideas about SUVs.

9: THE CLUBSPORT TURBO CONCEPT WAS A PROPER SUPERCAR If there’s one phrase that really sums up the TT, it’s ‘sports car’. There’s no arguing about it, that’s precisely what the TT is. But back in 2015, when Audi pulled the covers off the TT Clubsport Turbo concept, they’d surprisingly turned the formula into a balls-to-the-wall supercar. It had super-aggressive racederived bodywork, with a huge rear wing and pumped-up arches designed to evoke the 90 IMSA GTO racers of the 1980s, and the power was frankly ridiculous: the 2.5-litre TFSI motor was putting out 591bhp, thanks to a clever electric-biturbo system. The interior was gutted and fitted with race seats and a rollcage, and the all-in weight was comfortably under 1,400kg. We really, really wish they’d put this one into limited production. Just look at it!

10: IT’S NAMED AFTER A MOTORCYCLE RACE The subject of what the TT name actually means has caused many a pub argument over the years. Many owners will never have given it a second thought, of course – it’s called ‘TT’ simply because that’s what its name is. Some have speculated that it stands for ‘Technology, Tradition’, although that sort of mawkish sentiment doesn’t sound very 1990s Audi. No, in fact it’s named after the legendary Isle of Man TT – which, of course, is a motorcycle race. Why? Well, the name specifically derives from the sporting endeavours of NSU Motorenwerke, an automobile and motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1873 which was acquired by the Volkswagen Group in 1969, and merged with Auto Union to create Audi NSU Auto Union AG – which later got shortened to simply Audi. NSU named some of their 1960s road cars (like the 1000TT, 1200TT and TTS) after the firm’s two-wheeled Isle of Man successes, and that’s where the modern Audi TT name comes from. So it’s named after a bike race, and literally stands for ‘Tourist Trophy’ – but it does actually make historical sense, in a convoluted sort of way.

Who wouldn’t want to own a TT RS? Just look at it!

Words Matthew Bell

AUDI TT MK3 BUYING GUIDE It may only be five years old, but the Mk3 TT can be an attractive purchase nearly-new. We take a look at the model in detail to help you understand what you’re buying.

Y

ou’re probably thinking: “wait, the Mk3 TT came out in 2014, what on earth can you cover in this buying guide that I won’t already know”. To some extent you’re right, a car that’s at most four years old shouldn’t cause you much concern. But you aren’t thinking outside the box. What options are useful? Were there any recalls? Are the running costs higher than expected? Are there any common faults that could cause a headache? What tuning options are out there? So that’s exactly what we’re going to cover here. Let’s start with the most obvious piece of buying advice. Buy the best car you can afford, but also buy the right car for you. What do we mean by that? Put it simply, the Mk3 TT had an endless supply of options that adjust the characteristics ever-so-slightly from car-

056

Performance Audi

to-car, but can add up to quite substantial differences. For example, you could get 20” wheels, or the smaller 18s or 19s. I worked for CAR magazine when the team were running a TTS on long-term test back in 2015; the one thing that we all noted was that the ride on the 20s was categorically harsher than that on the smaller wheels, but they looked the part. So, the trade-off of comfort is replaced with style. If you’re picking a diesel TT for motorway miles, chances are you want that extra bit of comfort from the 18s, so the 20” wheels won’t be right for you. Vice versa, if it’s short distances and you aren’t all that fussed with the extra comfort, the 19s or 20s are the option for you. Note here, the TT looks menacing on 20s and starts to really add that baby-R8 vibe that’s slowing being adopted by the TT over recent years.

TT MK3 BUYING GUIDE

Other options affect the cars personality too; do you want S Tronic, or back-tobasics three pedals and a gear lever? Do you want Magnetic Damping or regular sports suspension? These are things that should be crossing your mind from the offset and the only way for you to know which is better for you is to simply go out and drive them. Used prices for cars that’re nearly new are greatly affected by options, so if you can do away with the fanciest Bang and Olufsen sound system or the Magnetic Damping, then do so, because it might just save you a few thousand pounds. Don’t be sucked in by adverts expressing virtual cockpit here and there, this feature was standardised on the Mk3 so will be on every car. The clean design did away with a centre console screen for a simpler, more refreshing cabin. Everything is displayed through the instrument panel on a 12.3 LCD display. This can be a little daunting at first, especially if you aren’t fussed

about gadgets, but once you’ve messed about with it for a few minutes it’s easy to understand and you’ll be flicking through menus on the move without trouble. One last thing before we get started, the rear seats. Don’t buy a TT if you want people to sit in the back, they’re pretty pointless and even Audi admitted they’re only really suitable for persons under 1.48m, so children… Then again, it has ISOfix points, so you can get the baby seat in if you so wish, though good luck with that if your little bundle of joy is in a wriggly mood.

Trim levels Before you buy, you need to know what packs were available from factory and what they mean. First up, trim level. You had a choice of four from factory for the regular cars; Sport, S-Line, Black Edition or Vorsprung. The Sport model is actually the base model, it comes with 18” wheels, Xenon headlights with LED DRLs, the virtual cockpit that we mentioned above, cruise control and retractable rear spoiler. The S-Line gets all of the Sport options as well as 19” forged wheels, LED headlights with LED rear lights and dynamic rear indicators, S-Line exterior styling pack and

Front Super Sports seats in Black Alcantara/ leather upholstery. The Black Edition got 20” forged alloys in 10 Y-Spoke design in gloss black, a fixed rear spoiler and black styling pack as well as privacy glass and all options from the

S-Line. The Vorsprung, the top of the line trim, got 5-spoke 20” forged wheels, Matrix LED headlights, driver assistance systems including Audi Side Assist and Park Assist, as well as a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

TT RS Roadster interior is stunning

Above this you have the TTS and TTRS. The TTS was available as a regular model or as the Black Edition.

Engines Once you’ve chosen your trim level you need to select which engine. Like previous generation TTs, there’s a number of engine options on offer covering both petrol and diesel. At the bottom of the tree is the 1.8-turbo, which is front-wheel drive and offers almost 200bhp of performance. At the top of the tree is the near-400bhp TT RS with that fabulous five-pot motor that creates an eargasm each time you press the loud pedal. The Sport model was available with a 1.8-litre turbo producing 177bhp, as well as a range of four 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engines ranging from 194bhp to 241bhp. As well as these you can have a 2.0-litre TDI engine producing 181bhp. The more powerful 2.0-litre petrols can be had with quattro or front-wheel drive, while the lesser powered cars made do with just FWD. The 2.0-litre TDI could also be had with the choice of quattro or FWD, and all of which could be specified with an S-Tronic auto or manual, but most cars will be S-Tronic. The most powerful 2.0-litre TFSI engine came in the TTS, which shared most of its running gear with the Mk7 Golf R.

Controls are easy and intuitive As a result, you get a whopping 301bhp and could be specified with both manual or auto. Opt for the Auto and you’ll do 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds, while the manual takes 4.7 seconds, depending on how quickly you can slot home the gears. The later TTS cars got an extra helping hand with power up to 305bhp but the very latest are affected by GPFs for emissions. The TTRS, as mentioned above, got the fabled 2.5-litre five-pot turbo producing 394bhp. 0-60mph was over in just 3.6 seconds, thanks to Quattro and that brilliant S Tronic DSG gearbox. There are a few special editions to mention, all of which got an engine that was already on offer. For example, the TT 20 Years which marked quite obviously 20 years of the TT, this got the 2.0-litre TFSI engine found in its most powerful trim below the TTS at 241bhp. This car was auto and quattro only. You also have the Audi

Sport Edition TT, which was essentially a TT RS dressed up slightly differently. You’ll be pleased to read that there aren’t any commonly reported problems with any of the engines, but that’s not to say that you won’t have any. The same checks apply to all used cars, history. Crucially with modern cars is the run-in service, particularly on the more powerful models. Speak with the previous owner if he

or she was the first to own the car. To put it bluntly, cars that adhered to the gentle driving for the first 1000 miles varying speeds, braking and length of driving will more likely be more reliable. Cars that were ragged from the off will break quicker. The manual said to avoid full throttle and 2/3 of maximum engine permitted speed up to 1200 miles, the instructions are there for a reason.

Common problems The Mk3 is seen as a reliable car, there are no obvious problems that you should be

060

Performance Audi

looking out for, however, some owners have reported a few problems. The first of which relates to the brakes. The actual braking mechanism is faultless, however, owners reported squeaking noises that could be rectified with replacement pads. In truth, large brakes tend to squeak when cold anyway, so don’t worry too much to begin with. If the problem persists and it becomes annoying, your pads should be the first port of call. Next up, the interior. Owners reported bolsters becoming damaged easily. Sadly, this wouldn’t come under warranty as it’s

“there are so many trim levels and engine options” a wear and tear issue, so just beware of cars with worn bolsters. Other owners have reported that the virtual cockpit can be slow to start on occasion. This is most likely a software problem and can be updated under warranty, so visit your local dealership if the car is under three years old. Other owners have reported that front wishbones and anti-roll bars may need replacing at 60,000 miles. Most cars won’t have hit that mark yet, but if you’re after a cheap bargain, high-mileage cars are where you should be looking. If there are rattles from the front or rear, get them investigated ASAP or simply walk away from the purchase. WhatCar? published a reliability survey on the Mk3 TT and it scored a respectable 90%. That being said, it finished third from bottom in its class, so take from that what you will. Most problems that owners reported were non-engine related and fixed within a short period of time.

Prices Prices are all over the place for TTs and that’s because there are so many options, different trim levels, engines, packs and

TT MK3 BUYING GUIDE

then individual options. Want a TTRS? The cheapest we found was just under £40k with only 20,000 miles on the clock, which is a saving of some £20k on list price. A TTS on the other hand is going to cost you £20k-£30k realistically, depending on which options you want and how many miles are on the clock. The cars around £20k will have upwards of 50,000 miles on the clock with few options. Most of the TTs for sale are auto, but there are a few manuals about which appear to be slightly cheaper than the DSG counterpart showing it’s less desirable, despite being rarer. The lesser-powered 1.8 Sports and diesel models are where the bargains are at. In truth, a 1.8 turbo isn’t much slower than the base 2.0-litre model, but it can be

a few thousand pounds cheaper, so that’s something to think about; you shouldn’t need to spend more than £15k getting a nice example either. Don’t forget that you can still by the Mk3 straight from the factory. This is great for if you want a brand-spanker or whether

you want to understand the options better. Go on and configure the car you want, then go and see if you can match your spec to a used car. Finally, map out what you want. The more options a car has, the more desirable it becomes and therefore the prices go up. Arguably, the more basic versions of the TT are the best versions and you’ll have much more fun driving them. This makes even more sense if you’re hoping to modify your car. If it’s a plush interior you want with upgraded sound system, the aftermarket can bring you that, likewise with wheels and bodykits.

“an aftermarket exhaust adds a more aggressive tone”

Modifications It’s new, but that doesn’t mean the aftermarket list is short. We’ll focus on modifying a TTS here as the sort of middle ground between performance and comfort, but most of these parts can be applied to other models. All of the cars are turbocharged, so chipping them for extra power is a doddle. Likewise with the S Tronic gearboxes, the changes can be made sharper and limits adjusted.

ECU The EA888 engine is the one used in both the Mk7 Golf and Mk3 TTS, as it loves to be tuned. Cars on stock engines can reach 450-500bhp without too much trouble. Of course you’ll need upgraded fuel systems as well as a bigger turbo, but the internals won’t be too unhappy with 450bhp going through it. A simple stage 1 tune with no hardware upgrades should see 350-370bhp without a sweat, add in a downpipe, exhaust, and intake and you’ll see the 400bhp mark from the likes of APR, MRC or Revo.

Exhaust The stock system sounds smart, but the aftermarket adds in a more aggressive tone and you’ll get those common DSG “farts”

062

Performance Audi

too. Hit up Milltek, who offer a complete turbo back system with either sports cat, decat, resonated or non-resonated, all of which produce differing tones. You’re going to need around £2k+ for a full turbo-back system, but you’ll be able to get closer to the 400bhp with one.

Wheels When it comes to wheels, the TT could be had with 18, 19 or 20” wheels, meaning you could go for any setup to suit, whether you want an 18 with larger sidewall or a slick 20” low-profile tyre, the choice is yours. A popular choice is the Rotiform LAS-R wheel in 20” size. It’s a smart show wheel and won’t break the budget either at just over £1000 for a set.

SUSPENSION We can sharpen up the handling here substantially if you intend to use the car on track. Bilstein coilovers are a great option as the range extends from road use to full on track spec with the B16 Clubsport range at almost £3500. KW also balance track and road use well and can even be applied to cars with electronic damping, just make sure you opt for the right kit. Realistically, you’re going to need £1500 for a set, but

you won’t be disappointed with the drop or performance.

AUDIO If you’ve chosen a car that’s not been blessed with the Bang & Olufsen sound system, fear not, the aftermarket can help you. Whether that’s Vibe, Kicker or anyone else on the market, they will be able to fit a factory-fresh look with ridiculous audio quality. This is all down to choice, so you’ll need to do the digging on this one. ■

ow many Audi models does Maxton Design UK currently cater for? And what new Audi models do you have in the pipeline?

With Audi being one of our most popular sellers, we try our best to launch new products as quickly as possible while still maintaining high-quality finish and design. Some of the most popular models are the RS3, S3, R8, TT, RS6 and A3. We offer a large variety of car styling parts for almost every make and model you can think of. Considering the vast amount of products we have, the best place to navigate and search for parts that fit your car would be our website at www.maxtondesign.co.uk

For those who are unfamiliar with Maxton Design, how would you best describe what you sell? In terms of body kits, ours consist of various components such as: front

splitters, side skirt diffusers, rear splitters, rear diffusers and spoiler extensions. Our preferred manufacturing material is ABS plastic, this is due to the many benefits it offers. The durability is complimented by the flexibility, because it allows the products to be fitted easily and withstand more pressure than the rival material, fibreglass. We offer these in three different surface finishes at three different price points, not only to provide a variety, but to help the money conscious modifier. You mentioned that Maxton Design UK was founded in 2012, how have you found opening a UK branch and doing business in the UK? While difficult at first, as any business is to start, we definitely think it was worthwhile. Going from a small warehouse with a few employees, to somewhere much larger and creating more of a family. Our premises or as we prefer to call it, Maxton House, is based in West Yorkshire. Maxton

House really captures what we had always envisioned, because now we’re able to put a face to the products, and we can proudly say it’s a very inviting place to all those who make the journey to visit us. Although you have a large social media presence, is there anything you’d like to say to potential new customers who are reading this? Come and meet us and see our great products in the flesh at Autosport International, this January at the NEC. We’re very excited and looking forward to meeting new businesses and everyone in attendance. We’ll be located in Hall 4, stand 4740. There may even be some discounts and goodies up for grabs! For any Audi fanatics out there, hopefully the information we’ve provided persuades you to join the Maxton Family and take your first or continued steps into cosmetically upgrading your car with Maxton Design UK.

SHOWS

We make our annual pilgrimage to the Mecca of car culture – Viva Las SEMA baby!

T

he Speciality Equipment Market Association Show, now in its 56th year, is not only the world’s biggest car show, but it’s actually the single biggest event ever to hit the massive Las Vegas Convention Center. Think about it, this is about the biggest convention centre in the world, and it’s in the mighty Las Vegas – the place where all the big conventions converge. In fact, the LVCC is built to hold three or four massive conventions at the same time, but they just can’t have anything else going on during SEMA week, simply because the show fills the whole kit and caboodle to the brim – over 3-million square

feet of floor space. And then it spills out into the carparks, outside areas, and parts of the famous Westgate Hotel next door. In other words, we knew that we were looking at a bit more than a light stroll around. Put it like this, my Fitbit (yes, I know, don’t take the piss) says that we were averaging 12-14 miles a day, and that’s without getting there in the first place. So why do we do it? Why do we spend our own cash to go all the way to Las Vegas to visit the world’s most important modified car show? Well, that question answers itself, doesn’t it? Here’s what went on for the 2019 instalment… Words Midge photography Jules Truss

SHOW SURVIVAL Bizarrely, the biggest tip we can give you about SEMA survival, is to resist the temptation to go every day. Yes, the show is the epitome of awesome, and yes, it’s massive – shit, you might not even see the whole lot in four days anyway - but you will need to have a rest

066

midweek, if anything just for your own sanity! You see, America is seriously loud, but it’s not just that. Even if you’re not working (and being a trade-only show of course you are, honest guvnor), you’ll want to be taking pictures. And if you want to take pictures, you’ll spend half

your life waiting for people to get out of your shot. Grrr!!! On the bright side, you’re in Sin City and there’s plenty away from the show to keep you occupied. So, grab yourself a day off and check out our top tips for a successful trip.

SEMA 2019

CAR SPOTLIGHT JACKULTRAMOTIVE R8 YouTuber and game vlogger Jack Morris aka JackUltraMotive debuted his redhot Audi R8 V10 at this year’s event. On the unveiling he said: “Well here she is! Fully decked out with custom mounted Inno roof box and UltraMotive livery designed by me in Forza.” Mods include Air Lift Performance suspension with 3H management, Nitto Invo tyres, a Maxton Design full lip kit and wing and a Capristo exhaust system. He added: “This is by far one of my greatest life achievements at my age and it still hasn’t even sunk in yet.” Not bad at 19-years old, eh?

CAR CULTURE GONE WILD Some will tell you that SEMA is about as diverse as it gets, others will insist that it’s simply an overblown collection of massive trucks, American muscle cars, hypercar royalty and Japanese street weapons. Although surely there’s nothing wrong with a huge collection of any of the above, right? Casual observers aside, when you look a little deeper, it’s obvious that the show is far more diverse than many give it credit for, both in the actual cars on display, and how they’re modified. The truth is that, no matter what you’re into, there’s a tirade of almost unbelievable gems to be sought out for anyone dedicated to any facet of car culture.

WHERE’S ALL THE BLOODY AUDIS? European cars have always been popular at SEMA and in the USA in general, the reason being that import taxes ensure that they’re still seen as something of a luxury item. Any cretin can drive a home-grown Camaro you see, but it takes real class, and plenty of cash, to run a high-end European motor. We’re not sure we agree with the sentiment, of course, but we get the idea. In a way, high-end Euro cars sit where Japanese cars did a couple of decades ago; they’re something a bit different from the establishment, and here at SEMA both old skool and new cars, and more than ever BMWs, remain massively popular on the tuning front. What’s pretty controversial, though, and one thing we noticed this year, was the distinct lack of Audis on display. There were a few, of course, but nothing like the tirade of four-ringed goodness we’ve witnessed at the past few events. Maybe the introduction of the RS6 to the US will change that next year? We’ll have to wait and see.

CAR SPOTLIGHT INTEGRATED ENGINEERING RS3 8V SEDAN There weren’t a lot of Audis outside, in fact there weren’t a lot inside, but we did spot Utah-based Integrated Engineering’s minty-fresh RS3 8V parked up outside away from their Upper South Hall booth. This is a car that regularly runs in the mid 10s down the strip. Mods include IE Stage 2 tune, IE cold air intake, IE 3.5-inch downpipe, Iroz intercooler, Ohlins coilovers and 9.5x19-inch HRE F11 wheels.

CAR SPOTLIGHT ACCUAIR R8 We’ve been following Keith Ozzimo’s R8 build for a while on Instagram in the lead up to SEMA, he’s on accuair_keith if you want to follow him. This is a car that has the lot! AccuAir suspension, full powder-coated roll cage, big f-off spoiler, Rotiform OZR wheels and a whole lot more. We’ll have a full feature for you soon, so watch this space!

Rotiform OZRs are the perfect wheel choice on Keith’s R8

AND YOU ARE? Custom painted orbital polisher anyone?

TOP GEAR When all is said and done, one thing that can be easy to forget when you’re busy checking out all the awesome builds, is that SEMA is ALL about the new products and gear. Obviously, you can’t forget for long, though, chiefly because many of the massive halls feature thousands upon thousands of new bits and pieces. If it’s for a car, and many cases even if it isn’t, you’ll find it right here at the centre of the show. In fact, there’s a whole hall (probably about the size of Birmingham’s NEC) dedicated to just wheels and tyres, imagine that! You see, SEMA is designed for one thing, and that’s for the aftermarket to showcase what they have coming up in the year. Flogging your wares here is quite the investment too as stands start at about 30 grand for a small space, and you have to be exhibiting for a good few years before you’re even considered for a bigger premium spot, no matter who you represent. And, while you will be aware of many of the big names, there are guys that are absolutely massive in the US, Asia and Australia that even we have never heard of. What’s nice to see, though, is that some of our biggest brands are always there to represent Blighty. What’s even nicer is that guys like Samco Sport, Milltek, Goodridge and EBC Brakes are just as loved in the US market as they are here.

068

Performance Audi

We like to think that we know our wheels. But it has to be said that nothing blows our minds like the array of amazing rims on display that we’ve never heard of. Now, this might be because many don’t have to push their stuff into Europe because they’re already massive. Or it could be the fact that Her Majesty’s Customs continues to pull our pants down and aim for penetration when it comes to landing stuff here in the UK. But we do know that there’s no excuse for not having some of these brands in the UK. What SEMA is clearly best at is bringing companies together from every manufacturing country in the world, so while you get a lot of big names that we know – the BBS, Enkei, Rotiform, Asanti and Vossens of this world - there’s many, many more just waiting to be discovered. You may not be familiar with the likes of Ningbo, Cragar, Jianda, Centi, Voxxx, DNA Speciality, TW Racing, XIX, New Light, and Luxxx, of course, but they actually make some proper spanking wheels. All stuff that could blow the show and shine comps right open here in the UK. And, what’s more, at least 70% of them are cast wheels that come in at a reasonable price. If you’re looking for something totally different to what your mate has down the street, then a spot of self-importing could very much be the way forward.

SEMA 2019

CAR SPOTLIGHT ROBIN’S B9 A4 ALL ROAD We’ve seen a few modified Allroads, but Robin’s B9 is one of the more extreme versions. Mods include a host of bodystyling parts from X-UK including an RS4 front and rear bumper conversion, front splitter and canards, and a vented bonnet. There’s also Air Lift Performance suspension, an iPE exhaust system, Touren TR-78 wheels and Thule Vector roof box and roof bars. Nice!

GO OUTDOORS One thing we always say about SEMA is it’s not just the cars inside that are about as pant-wettingly worthy as it gets, the stuff on the outside is pretty damn spesh too. In fact, even the cars that get a little overlooked here would pick up the entire trophy cabinet at just about any other show. It really is a testament to the sort of kudos that displaying at SEMA brings with it.

We spotted this R8 just casually chilling outside

Every so often you come across the odd product that makes you laugh out loud, so fair play to China’s ShuangWang Group unveiling a couple of their copyright-busting new designs. Yep, we’re sure we’ve seen these puppies somewhere before, but we can’t quite put our finger on it…

VEGAS TOP 5 Essentially, there’s only 5-things you absolutely have to do in Las Vegas, and here’s our top tips on how to make the best of ‘em…

EAT There’s over 2000 places to eat in Vegas, and that’s just on the strip. So, you won’t starve. The biggest mistake though, is to go thinking it’s America so it’ll all be steaks and burgers. While you will find some of the world’s best patties stuffed in buns (or between two doughnuts), it’s actually a foodie Mecca, offering everything from fashionable street food to seven-star dining. They all have one thing in common though, and it’s that a meal is never cheap in Vegas. After a week you’ll even start thinking that 20-quid is actually pretty reasonable for a sandwich, it’s not.

NOT EVERYTHING IS A GOOD IDEA… Now obviously we really, really (really) love SEMA, but that doesn’t mean that everything we saw on display is what you’d call the best concept ever, quite the opposite in fact. You could put it down to a matter of taste, or a lack thereof by some of our American chums, but there’s no denying that stuff like wheels with guns on them, binged-up engines and plastic caliper covers can be a little on the rubbish side for us Brits.

DRINK Beer is a serious affair in the States - beer with dinner, beer with lunch and, obviously, beer with breakfast. Has your team just scored a touchdown thingy? Had a particularly epic Snickers? Just enjoyed a visit to the little boy’s room? Well, you’ll be needing a beer to celebrate then. And luckily you won’t have trouble finding a few cold ones here in the middle of the Mohave Desert. That said, it’s not just about the beer, or the odd Jack ‘n’ Coke. Vegas is the land of cheeky cocktails, and one of the very few places where you can walk down the street enjoying a foot-long margarita. In other words, prepare to give your liver a thorough workout… oh, and look out for the numerous happy hours around town.

GAMBLE No, you’re not gonna win big, well it’s not likely anyway. But, think about it like this, Vegas is built on looking after the gambler, and it’s the only night out you’ll ever have any chance of getting your money back. If you’re a drinker, gambling can pay off well, chiefly because alcoholic drinks are usually free while you’re playing on the tables, slots or video poker… they’re a fair few quid when you’re not. Remember what the experts say when it comes to gambling though - when the fun stops… bang another score on black (joke). It’s only another 17-quid, right?

SHOP

GO NEXT YEAR As you’ll probably know by now, SEMA is a trade-only event. This means that you’ll at least need to know and be ‘working for’ a professional at the time of your arrival. So that should tell you all that you need to know. Security is tight, that’s for sure, but it doesn’t mean a little bit of ingenuity won’t get you in the door; we’re all in this game together after all, right? Once again, 2020 brings SEMA relatively late – it’s at the LVCC from the 3rd to the 6th of November. But, on the plus side you can get out there early, put your feet up and first enjoy one of the other most mental things you’ll ever likely to see – Halloween in Las Vegas. We’ll see you there for a cocktail, or ten!

070

Performance Audi

Like your designer garb? Well you’ll love the strip then, there’s literally hundreds of big name shops all designed to make you think nothing at paying through the nose. Over the years, and after dropping way too many Franklins, we’ve discovered that there’s a far better way to grab a bargain. Head to the North (or South) Las Vegas Outlets, and you’ll find just about everything you could ever desire, all at a significant discount. Just watch those excess luggage charges on the way home, it’s easy to go nuts!

SEE A SHOW Yes, you may be here to see a big show, namely SEMA, but there’s plenty of other shows going on. Being the entertainment capital of the world, it’s not unusual to see stars like Brittany Spears, Lady Gaga and Rod Stewart being the resident act at some of the big resort hotels, all getting paid upwards of half a million quid a night to have a warble. At the other end of the scale, there are hundreds of other shows, with tickets ranging from around 30-bucks, and put simply, they’re all pretty good, they just wouldn’t be in Vegas otherwise. These include comedy and music shows, along with those that are a bit more ‘adult orientated’… if you catch our drift.

AUDI 200 20V QUATTRO

Words Dan Bevis Photography Mike Crawat

Rhythm and Stealth Audi’s five-cylinder engines have always been celebrated for making fabulous noises. And when you crank a 20v turbo up to 450bhp and hide it inside a stealthy black cruiser, that’s just about the perfect combination…

here’s a simple formula that will allow you to make people’s heads spin on the retro scene, and it is this: obscure car + obscene mods = dropped jaws. Think of it as a very basic two-circle Venn diagram, if you will; the occupants of the ‘obscure’ circle will always draw a crowd – imagine showing up at TRAX or Players in a Zaporozhets or a Goggomobil, you’ll be fighting off the gawping admirers with a smelly stick. The ‘obscene’ circle is rather more polarising; picture, say, turning up at one of those events in a Hillman Hunter with a radial engine and bolt-on Rocket Bunny arches, or a Renault Espace on air-ride – some people will want to pat you on the back and shake your hand, others may wish to spit in your eye and cast ill will over your dreams. It’s in the crossover between the two circles that the really meaty stuff happens, and among the Turner drag racers and V8-powered Daihatsu Charades you’ll find this rather naughty Audi 200. ‘What’s that,’ you ask? Well, thanks for joining in – allow us to elaborate. You see, the 200 was the car that happened while everyone was distracted by the Coupes; the sensible luxury saloon that will be very familiar to a few readers, but quite obscure to most. Badged deliberately to confuse, it was the 5-cylinder variant of the Audi 100; when the C2-generation 100 launched back in 1976, the addition of a fuel-injected 5-pot turned it into a 200, and it was much the same deal when the C3-gen cars emerged in 1982. The 200-spec arrived the following year, boasting a turbocharged 20-valve version of the five-banger. An executive saloon for people who wanted to waft under the radar, yet also possess the firepower to seriously ruffle some feathers. Everyone eulogises about the early-1990s being the glory days of the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, but the Audi 200 20v in Quattro spec was packing more power than the Ford, and

Performance Audi

it had oodles more grip too. This is a car that deserves to be remembered more fondly and widely than it is. Thomas Reidl is a man keen to reframe these perceptions, however. Known affectionately by the nickname ‘Dicker’, he resides in a small village in lower Bavaria, the heart of German horsepower junkie lore, and he’s doing things to the Audi 200 that would make your head spin. Just look at his glorious creation, glinting in the light: on the one hand it appears relatively stealthy, an unadorned three-box saloon in the classic style. But on the other, it’s clearly sitting super-low over some tasty (and frankly humongous) race car wheels. All is evidently not as it seems here. And any ambiguity is blown into the weeds when Dicker buries the throttle, all four wheels staggering to deploy the mighty turbocharged grunt as the execu-barge scampers frantically for the horizon. Well, that’s the effect of 450bhp for you. Interestingly – although perhaps not wholly surprisingly – it wasn’t the 200 that first ignited the Audi fire in his soul as a youngster, but something rather more intense. “When I was

AUDI 200 20V QUATTRO a little boy, my father took me to watch a race with Walter Röhrl driving his famous Audi Quattro S1,” Dicker recalls. “That was the moment, right there: I was hooked for life.” Fast-forward to the legal driving age, and what do we find our four-ringed friend buying for himself? Err… okay, it wasn’t an Audi, and neither was the next car, but finally he found his passion third-time-lucky with an A4. “It was a 2.5 TDI, and to be honest I had so much trouble with it,” he recalls. “So, I decided to seek out a new car – but I had no idea which would be the right one for me… would I prefer a new or an old car? And then a friend said to me ‘Why not get an Audi 200? A 5-cylinder turbo, that’s what you need’ – and so that was decision made.” With the big saloon firmly in his sights, Dicker set about scouring the classifieds for just the right example. And after a few weeks, he found it in Ingolstadt, a 1990 20v Quattro. This was back in 2006, and he readily admits that he was never planning on keeping it for this long; “It’s addictive,” he smiles, “every time I drive it, it just feels like my car.”

AUDI 200 20V QUATTRO

“the old motor was hoiked out, and replaced by an ABY engine from an Audi S2”

The condition of the car as-bought was generally good; it had been owned by a young guy who’d clearly been enjoying the mischief inherent in the stock 220bhp motor and had endeavoured to put his own stamp on the 200. “There were a few things I had to change right away,” Dicker laughs. “It had really dark window tints, and so much plastic crap attached to the exterior – but the substance of the car was good. The first thing I did when I got it home was to strip off the tints and remove the enormous ‘biohazard’ sticker stuck to the back window!” Everything was straight and solid, the original Panther Black paint still gleaming and the bone-stock 3B 20-valve engine ticking along nicely. For the first five years or so of ownership, Dicker simply enjoyed it for what it was, dailydriving it and appreciating the combination of creamysmooth torque and amusing boost on demand, coupled with a wafty ride and all sorts of elbow room inside. But all the while, those memories of Walter Röhrl and his S1 were nestled at the back of his subconscious, until the tension

076

Performance Audi

became too much to bear and, in the winter of 2012/13, the 200 was taken off the road for a bit of a seeing-to. What happened next was wonderfully surprising. While the factory-fit 3B engine was a solid and reliable little unit making decent power, Dicker had done his research and he knew just what he needed to do to level-up. So the old motor was hoiked out, and replaced by an ABY engine from an Audi S2. The fundamentals are shared (it’s still a 2.2-litre 20v unit, with five cylinders and a turbo), but this motor made a better base for what he had planned. This included the addition of a Garrett GT30/76 turbo, a home-made charge cooler setup, uprated fuelling by means of 630cc Siemens injectors and a Bosch 044 fuel pump, and a 5-branch manifold going into a home-made 76mm exhaust system. It’s all managed by a programmable VEMS ECU and has been painstakingly tweaked by the careful hands at Audiland and PK Motorsport. The results of this are a reliable and usable 450bhp, with 479lb.ft of torque, engineered to be at once hilariously aggressive and friendly enough to use every day.

CREAMY CENTRE While the exterior is largely untouched from stock, Dicker’s put a lot of effort into turning the interior into a beautifully appointed and luxurious daily cruiser. The full black leather interior from a Audi V8 Exclusive Sport has been swapped in, complemented by brown Alcantara headlining, a Nardi steering wheel, and some custom home-made wooden door inserts to match the steering wheel and gearknob. It’s got a period 1990s retro vibe, and it really suits the 200’s range-topping character. The addition of a high-end audio setup completes the picture – so when he’s not burying the throttle and revelling in the sonorous noises of that turbo’d ivepot, he can crank up the tunes in supreme comfort.

Wooden Nardi steering wheel is a perfect addition to the 200

Black leather Audi V8 Exclusive Sport interior looks right at home

It’s not highly-strung or boosty, it’s perfectly set up to balance power and usability. The stock 5-speed gearbox and the Quattro system are more than up to the task of handling it all, and so with the performance taken care of, it was time to address the aesthetics. Dicker didn’t want to rewrite history here, the aim was subtlety rather than ostentation, and the first stage was to ceramic-coat that beautiful black paint. And then, of course, it was vital to sort out the way the thing sits. “It was always clear to me that I had to drive static,” he explains. “I think airride is for cruisers - like old Mercedes, for example!” The aim here was for some extreme static lows, but with quality componentry to allow him to deploy that power effectively with decent and predictable handling. Scene superheroes Gepfeffert came to the rescue here, with a set of their custom-modified KW V3 coilovers, allied to camber-

adjustable top mounts. The brakes have been logically upgraded, as you can’t really expect 1990-spec saloon car stoppers to happily deal with 450 horses without wilting; the 200 now wears RS3 brakes with 370mm discs up front, while the rear sports a VW Phaeton setup with 330mm rotors. The wheels they sit behind are frankly phenomenal, imbuing the chunky saloon with a real contemporary Touring Car vibe, tucking the vast 19” diameter right up inside the flawless original arches. They’re BBS Le Mans splits, if you were wondering, and they pull off the neat trick of being periodperfect while also really modernising the vibe. “I just love the clean look of this car,” Dicker beams, and he’s right to be proud of it. “I think the side view is my favourite, or the rear… hell, I just love all of it! I think it would be wrong for a car like this to have a big bodykit, or bolt-on arches or large spoilers, it needs to be clean and crisp. To me, it’s perfect as it is, and it’s so much fun to cruise – and occasionally put your foot down, of course! The best reactions to the car always come from the older guys, the ones who used to own these cars back when they weren’t that old. It’s the five-cylinder engine that really makes it though – every Audi 5-pot sounds incredible.” Yep, that’ll be the spectre of Walter Röhrl talking again. Dicker’s taken a mainstream influence, a motorsport hero shared by many, and painted that enthusiasm across a fresh and unexpected canvas. A 450bhp Audi 200 is squarely in the centre of the obscure/obscene Venn diagram, and that’s just where Dicker wants to be. ■

We take a trip to the Telford International Centre for the end of year show season send-off…

A

while back show season was pretty much done by October, but then in 2013 along came Ultimate Stance, a multi-marque show from the crew behind the more VAG-centric Ultimate Dubs. All of a sudden show season was extended until November and there was something to look forward to at the end of the year. Yay! Luckily, a lot of it takes place indoors, so no matter the weather you’re guaranteed plenty of dropped cars to dribble over in the dry.

And, those with a coveted indoor space have Saturday to set-up, so come Sunday morning the indoor halls (and there’s a lot of them) are filled with more clean motors than you can shake a microfibre cloth at. Also, having a set-up day means Saturday night is a bit of an end of season party, giving car owners an opportunity to see out the year with a cheeky pint or two (possibly even three!) as they look back at the year and talk winter rebuilds, new mods and shows for 2020. Being the professionals

we are, we decided to give the festivities a miss, so we were fresh-faced and ready for Sunday. And going by the state of what we saw stumbling into the show Sunday morning, that was probably a good thing. As always, the standard was particularly high indoors, with an amazing array of first-class Audis on display. There were some familiar show car favourites, plenty of previous Performance Audi feature cars and even a few new builds for us to check out, a few of which we’ll be featuring in the

SHOWS coming months. There was also a large outside display area, with plenty of motors that were deserving of an indoor space and a photo in these very pages. Unfortunately though, just as we were making our way outside to start snapping, the heavens opened, and as it was mid-afternoon, it led to a mass exodus. So our bad, we really should have shot outside first. Luckily, we captured everything four-ringed indoors, so we still have plenty to share. So enjoy and roll on show season 2020!

What wheels… … would you choose?

CAR SPOTLIGHT SAM NOBLE’S A3 8V When it came to standing out from the crowd, nothing and we mean nothing pinged out brighter in the vast halls of Telford International Centre than Sam’s Java Green A3, what a colour! And there was plenty of head scratching as people did a double take at the different wheels on either side. You see Sam is a bit of a wheel whore to say the least, so why settle for one set of wheels when you can have two? Or three, or four…

ar shows today can be a bit overwhelming. Yes, it’s excellent fun to drink in the glory of all these top-flight project builds, admiring the countless unique details and cunning engineering solutions, design quirks and fresh ideas – it awes and inspires in equal measure. But sometimes it can get a little demoralising. With the standard so high across the board (we really are in a golden age of modifying at the moment), how can you possibly hope to compete? Achieving the sort of finish that wins trophies at Players and TRAX, FittedUK and Ultimate Stance and all the other big names… that takes huge investment at high-end bodyshops and custom houses, right? Well, not necessarily. Cars are just things. They bolt together and unbolt just like the Meccano sets and Tamiya kits you played with as a kid. The stakes are higher, but it’s just as logical. And if you swallow a couple of brave pills, you can do it

by yourself if you’ve got the tenacity to figure out how. Would you have the balls to take, say, a tidy Audi S3 Sportback and smooth and repaint the engine bay yourself in a tent out on your driveway just for the sake of it? Stuart Davis did. And look, it came out a bit more than okay, didn’t it? More than okay in fact, and it’s this car’s incredible attention to detail that got us scampering back for a second look, and a third, and a fourth at numerous shows in 2019. And, we just had to get it under the bright lights in Si Gray’s studio. This thing truly is flawless, and the amount of effort that’s gone into it is outstanding. This shoot really shows it at its best: it looks super high-end from every angle and the quality is evident when you get up close and scrutinise the details. The fact it’s been built by a couple of mates out on the driveway under a tangle of ramshackle canvas makes it frankly unbelievable. “This all started out from the first Fast and Furious days,”

089

Stuart grins, and yep, we’ve heard that one before. The ripples from that iconic movie series, showing young petrolheads a hitherto unimaginable scenescape of automotive tuning, live large in the memory and continue to resonate. “I got hooked into all that, so I decided to buy a Citroën Saxo 1.1L with a full-on bodykit, blue stripes, neons and exhaust! But that was short-lived due to some ice on the road that pointed me in the direction of a lamp post!” This was followed by some motoring highs and lows before he found himself in an Astra SRi 1.8, initially planning to keep it stock but inevitably bagging it over OZ Futuras. “That one was seen at quite a few shows over the years,” he recalls. “Although it ended with a snapped spacer and losing a wheel, meaning it was broken for parts and eventually sold on as standard.” He had a taste for modding then, that’s obvious, and clearly Stuart was levelling-up in the power stakes as he went. It’s quite a leap from an Astra SRi to an Audi S3 though – here’s a car that, in 8P guise, serves up a rowdy 261bhp in factory-stock form, the quattro system helping it to smash through the 62mph marker in 5.5 seconds. A strong choice, and an excellent way to take his modifying proclivities to the next level. “I chose the S3 Sportback because I wanted something fast, but also something I really liked the shape of,” he reasons. “I always preferred the five-door S3, so that’s the direction I went in.” It took an extensive search to track down this particular car, as initially Stuart was really keen on the idea of a Sprint Blue example. He test-drove a few S3s in the more popular Ibis White, just to make sure he liked the car and was making the right choice, and found himself having such a good time he seized the moment and bought a white one. “It was owned by an elderly gent who was moving abroad,” Stuart explains.

090

Performance Audi

“There was a decent service history and it all checked out, plus it had the full pano roof, mag ride and Bose audio that I wanted – I ended up driving it home the same day!” Much like with the Astra, the plan was to keep it all stock, maybe just a few tweaks to tease out more power. But we hear that a lot and it always plays out the same way. Once this passion is in your blood, there’s no point fooling yourself. Stuff ’s going to happen. Stuart was soon flexing his credit card and building up a mountain of delicious upgrades. “With just the help of a few friends, this was built on the driveway over the next couple of years,” he smiles. And he’s Right: The car’s stance is courtesy of an Air Lift Performance install and CCW rims

right to be proud of this achievement. The first task was to start chasing Stage 2 levels of power, and the end result is a thoroughly respectable 372bhp – achieved by an R-Tech remap, exhaust system and 1-piece velocity stack intake pipe from Turn 12 Fabrication, Peron intercooler, and a few other tweaks. “Then the paintwork needed tarting up, so I booked in for a fresh coat of Ibis… but I couldn’t help myself, and it came away with a full colour change to Audi Ara Blue Metallic,” he laughs. “Then the love for the car was again revitalised and the hunt for Air Lift was on.” This platform is well-served by the air-ride community and Stuart’s undercarriage now wears the full Air Lift Performance suite working with Direnza rear camber arms, Super Pro ball-joints and a Pro Sport anti-lift kit. “Once it was bagged, I couldn’t resist carrying on with some new wheels and a retrim to top it off,” he continues. The modding monster in his brain has fully taken over the controls by this point. The rolling stock is a square setup of 10x18in CCW D11Ls, and the interior is a masterful lesson in quality materials, being trimmed in Bentley nappa leather with subtle details in carbon fibre and Alcantara. “In the period just before show season started, a friend

said ‘Why not smooth the bay?’ So we did,” says Stuart, with impressive nonchalance. “Just us, a driveway and a tent, it was completed in around two weeks, painted by myself in said tent.” It’s this lack of fear that makes the build what it is. The willingness to get stuck in rather than taking the easy route, proving this is a game anyone can play if they really want to. “The car certainly gets a lot of attention, especially when it has the quarter-bonnet on,” he says. “Or being looked at as if the wheels are falling off! But in general it’s all good responses and comments, it’s nice to see that others appreciate your project.” And that’s the point really. Stuart’s built the car this way because he wanted to. It’s that simple. Yet the fact it exists

AUDI S3 8P Right: Everywhere you look there are little details

GUTS AND GLORY Stuart’s interior is worth a closer look, as it’s easy to be distracted by the flawless exterior and on-point stance – the innards are equally fabulous. It’s all been retrimmed in Bentley nappa leather, with the front seats swapped for gorgeous Recaro wingbacks. You’ll also spot tasteful accents in Alcantara and carbon fibre throughout, with no stone unturned – the airbag cover, the centre triangles, the armrest, everything’s had careful attention paid to it. And the most obsessive detail-spotters will also note the retrofit upgrades, such as the frameless mirror from the current-model S3, and the Q3 heater controls. Every inch of this build is a riot of detail.

within this scene means the positive peer reviews are all fuel for the fire. The ‘your ride, your way’ ethos is imperative, but we’re all in this together. It’s a community, and a vibrant one. There’s always more to do. That’s the nature of a show build. “I’m not really sure what next season will bring, to be fair,” he grins, relishing the chaotic nature of fate itself. “I’d love to take the engine out and redo the paintwork, as it was the first time we’d done something on this scale. The bay itself was smoothed and painted with the engine still in, so I’d like to get the bay paint flawless! And there’s a few more areas I’ll work on, you’ll have to wait and see…” We’re looking forward to enjoying the further evolutions of Stuart’s Sportback. It’s a car which proves that trophy winners don’t exist within an elitist clique. A cool car is a cool car, whatever the means and methods. If you build it in a draughty tent instead of a pristine and hermetically-sealed workshop, that might just make it even cooler. ■

So, why should you plump for a VBT setup instead of a more traditional, standalone offering from one of the sector’s aftermarket heavyweights? First and foremost, pure and undiluted performance; if it doesn’t work it doesn’t get supplied, however pretty it might look. The fact that VBT doesn’t do anything except performance brake kits means that there are no other distractions, and that it is perfectly placed to devise uncompromising kits that fit perfectly and perform in an exemplary manner. There’s a lot to love about Vagbremtechnic and its impressively varied range, especially if you’re in the market for some vastly uprated stoppers. The fact that the range is modular in nature means that it can be easily worked to meet your own needs, while the innovative use of Caliper Carrier Kits means that, should you feel the need, a whole other world of performance, OEM-based braking is available.

GLENN’S RS4 B7 AVANT Rotiform OZR wheels + Toyo tyres = happy face If you’ve been following my RS4 build in Performance Audi this year, you’ll know I’ve been trying to choose some wheels for what seems like an eternity; truth is there just hasn’t been anything that’s tickled my particulars. Then, bang out of nowhere along comes three wheels I love at once from Rotiform: the OZR, BUC-M and LAS-R. Probably the hottest trio since Charlie’s Angels. Anyway, after much deliberation, I decided on a set of 8.5x19-inch OZRs in satin black. I love how they look tough and intricate, yet modern and classic all at once. They tick every single box and then some! So, a big thanks to Parm and the boys at Car Audio Security for their awesome service, advice and the swift delivery as they arrived less than 24 hours after I ordered them. Quite simply, if you want Rotiforms and want them quick, Car Audio Security are the place

to go! It may have taken me a while to choose the rims but deciding on rubber was an easy choice – I went for a trusty set of Toyo Proxes T1-Sport tyres in a 255/35/19. These were on my stock RS4 Le Mans wheels, and they were great in both the wet and the dry. There’s some serious tech in these tyres! From the clever tread design that delivers great cornering performance through increased contact, through to the two wide groves that ensures water is dispersed quickly and efficiently for better aquaplaning resistance. Luckily, they were delivered in no time, which left me with one little job: getting them fitted up. Now I don’t know about you, but I hate getting tyres fitted to new wheels, as it just seems a lot of places don’t take any care of your wheels. Many a time I’ve stood close by wincing and

looking on as some clumsy tyre fitter chucks my fresh new wheels on a tyre machine. So, when a friend of mine said: “there’s only one man I’d trust with my new wheels and that’s Ryan at Protyre Bristol” I knew exactly where to go, and I am glad I did as he looked after them as if they were his own. So, cheers fella! Right, back to wheels. So… fitment wise I went for an ET25 with a 15mm spacer, as without any spacer they were just catching the calipers, but with a 15mm spacer they sit a bit wider and there’s plenty of caliper clearance. And I am proper stoked with the results; I think they look great. The car sits really well on them and they fill up the arches just right, I still need to do a little bit of tinkering with KWs to get them spot on. Anyway, that’s enough of my gibberish, I’ll let the photos do the talking…

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT ANDY SEATON’S S2 COUPÉ Andy told us: “Hey PA, please find attached some pictures of my Audi S2 Coupé. It would be great to see them published. I’ve owned the S2 aka ‘Bessie’ for over 5 years now. I’ve been into Audis for many years and always wanted a Kingfisher Blue S2 Coupé, but could never afford one, until a mate talked me into it. Over the years I’ve replaced all the suspension with OEM spec parts, refurbished all the brakes and fitted newly refurbished Avus wheels. Owning an old Audi is a labour of love and you’ll always be replacing or refurbing some part.” FUTURE PLANS: “My plans will include removal and refurbishment of both subframes and other suspension components. Also, at some point the engine will come out and have a refresh/rebuild.”

JOESPH BARSBY’S S3 8V Joesph told us: “Hello Performance Audi, here’s my S3. I bought it brand new in March 2015. It was my daily car, but then I decided I wanted to change it into a road legal track car. I like how it really punches above its weight on every track we’ve driven (Spa, Silverstone, Goodwood, Donington). People are always coming into our garage and asking what the hell is in it and how is it so fast, ha-ha! I also really like the new race inspired livery.” He added: “All the work was done by Steve Hurley of CRS Motorsport. He’s won the South African VW Championship on countless occasions and then built his son a championship winning car thereafter. He moved back to the UK a few years ago and does this now. Really good guy to work with, so professional and knowledgeable.” TOP MODS: APR Stage 2+, Bilstein B10 suspension, Scorpion exhaust, Racing Lines intercooler, Powerbrake 6-pot billet cut aluminium race brakes with Endless pads. FUTURE PLANS: “Buy a backup engine and turbo charge it, taking it to over 500bhp. And then I want to go to the Nürburgring, back to Spa and do some of the other UK tracks that I’ve not already done.”

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT NISHANT PILLAI’S B7 S4 AVANT Nishant told us: “Hi there, I don’t know if you’re accepting applications from across the pond, but if so, I have a custom built Avant in Cambridge Green Pearl. The Avant started life as a S4 Avant and was transformed into an RS4 Avant using factory widebody panels along with a rebuilt and modified 4.2-litre FSI RS4 V8. The engine was built from two torn-down long blocks. An RS4 short block was checked for balance and rebuilt using new bearings and RS4 cylinder heads, headers, intake manifold, and valve covers. The battery was relocated to the trunk, and a third RS4-style torque mount was welded to the engine bay. The engine has a custom ECU tune and remap.” TOP MODS: EB Werks Exhaust, KW V3 coilovers, 19in Work Emotion wheels. FUTURE PLANS: “Just to drive it. It’s such an amazing build, puts a smile on my face every time I see, sit and drive her.”
