LANE’S TAKE ON SKI-DOO SUMMIT SP 600 BY LANE LINDSTROM

What I like about riding the Ski-Doo Summit SP 600 almost mirrors why I like riding the bigger Summit 850—it makes me a better rider and the sled is forgiving when I make a mistake. The Summit SP 600 is easy to throw around and responds to body English— almost like it knows what I’m thinking when I need to maneuver in tight trees or on a sidehill. I lean, it responds accordingly. I press the throttle and it goes … but doesn’t jump out from underneath me. The 600R E-Tec is a step up from the previous 600 H.O. and delivers smooth, usable power. The sled navigates fairly deep snow (I would definitely go with the 154x2.5-inch PowderMax Light with FlexEdge in the 600) but I’ll be the first to admit that for me, the deeper the snow gets the more I prefer the bigger 850 with a 165-inch track. For me, the SP 600 is a “shoulderseason” sled, meaning I like it early in the winter before the snow gets deep and at the end of the season (spring) when snow is more settled and you can get around more places with this size of sled.

HAT TRICK OF MOUNTAIN 600 SLEDS BY LANE LINDSTROM

When it comes to why I like the Polaris 600 Pro RMK, it’s not one feature that jumps out at me, it’s a combination of many smaller things—three things to be specific. 600 CLEANFIRE AND 155-INCH TRACK The 600 Cleanfire and Series 5.1 15x155x2.4-inch track is a great combination of power and flotation as well as a good amount of power to turn a track of that length and lug depth. I’m a big fan of the Series tracks and before the mid-160 track lengths came along, was a really big fan of the 155 track. That track churns through just about any kind of snow conditions and responds well to the power output of the 600 Cleanfire. 155-INCH TRACK AND GRIPPER SKIS Almost as good as the engine/track combo is the track/ski combo on the Pro RMK. These skis help keep the sled floating through the powder while not getting in the way when you are sidehilling or trying to navigate through the trees. That just means the skis aren’t too wide for mountain riding. The track floats well too, and with the Gripper skis, the 600 Pro RMK is a backcountry slayer. 600 CLEANFIRE AND 412 LBS. The 600 may not have the horsepower the 850 does, but the 600 Pro RMK is lighter than the 850 Pro RMK so the 600 is propelling a slightly lighter sled and that makes it feel powerful enough for a sled of this size.

SNOWEST JANUARY 2020 13

CHUGS RIGHT ALONG BY RYAN HARRIS

When Ski-Doo released the 600R E-TEC in the Gen 4 Summit chassis, it was an immediate hit with western riders. It was a big hit with the SnoWest staff, too. We’ve had one in our test fleet since

its introduction, and it gets as many miles as the big sleds do. Honestly, there are just not many places we go in this modern era of ultra avalanche awareness where the 600 won’t chug right along with the 850s.

Couple that with the fact that it’s lighter. The Summit 600R is one of those sleds you can ride all day long and when you get back to the truck, you just don’t feel worn out at all.

YOU’D BE SERIOUSLY SURPRISED

BY RYAN HARRIS

The 2020 Polaris Pro RMK 600 155 is the more dated of the two 600 mountain models, but that doesn’t show when you hit the mountain. The lightweight chassis still gives the 600 Pro RMK an advantage in deep snow,

14 SNOWEST JANUARY 2020

and the 600 Cleanfire engine has the perfect powerband for anyone in the family yet still gives you the juice you need if you’re riding it as your backup sled. It’s such a predictable sled, we can get into the trees and just keep it

pinned and carve any line we want. If you can keep the momentum going, this sled will claw and climb up ravines you’d seriously be surprised at. In fact, you may even consider swapping your 800 for one of these. d

9 RIDING TIPS YOU CAN PUT TO GOOD USE

So you’re thinking about becoming or already are a competitive female hillclimb racer and you’re not sure what might help you get to the next level? Similar to female backcountry riding, female hillclimb racers have a few different riding techniques to consider. I hope to provide you with some tips from my experience as a female professional hillclimb racer, and what has worked for me in the past.

1

If possible, always walk the hill as soon as possible before your class. Walking the hill allows you to get a better idea of what to expect on the hill, such as obstacles like large trenches, rocks, stumps, tight corners and gate changes and allows you to pick the quickest line. While racing, every millisecond is crucial, so slowing down to decide what you’re going to do in a particular section could cost you time and that can take you from first place to last. Watch the class of racers that goes before you and see where they went on the hill; note if it was a fast line, or if they didn’t make it, and adjust your plan as needed.

2

Always look ahead so you are better prepared to reposition on the sled to get to the next gate. It takes me more time to transition on the sled than it does my fellow male hillclimb racers, so by looking ahead it allows me to get my sled and body in a position to go through the next gate as fast as possible. Try not to watch the front of your skis while racing. That sounds obvious but gets a lot of racers in trouble on the hill.

3

Personally, I only sidehill when it’s absolutely necessary. If you take the time to get you and your sled into a controlled sidehill it needs to be worth it, meaning it’s the only way to get through a tricky spot on the race course. Keeping both skis grounded and placing both feet on one side transitioning weight allows female riders to keep their momentum up, while still making it through the race course as fast as possible. Contrarily, male racers are able to get into

16 SNOWEST JANUARY 2020

a sidehill faster and maintain a faster sidehill with the aid of their additional muscle and bodyweight.

4

Train and practice to prepare for race day. Both cardio and strength building needs to be a priority in the female racer’s training regimen. Increasing your endurance will help you maintain your athletic abilities until the finish line, and strength training will help you maneuver your sled throughout the race course as you will be pushing through corners and lifting your sled, which on average weighs 500 lbs. While practicing, set up multiple race courses with multiple obstacles so you can practice your corners and sidehills so these riding techniques will become second nature to you.

5

Always eat and hydrate to perform. I know a few racers who try not to eat anything on race day, whether it’s because of nerves or something else. But by doing this they are robbing themselves of much-needed energy to perform optimally. So don’t be afraid to eat a good breakfast in the morning and have some snacks and drinks on hand throughout the day. If you’re not interested in becoming a female hillclimb racer, but enjoy riding in the backcountry I have a few other tips that you may find useful.

1

Always keep a finger on the brake, which will help you maintain a sidehill and have control of your sled at all times. That extra second it takes to place your finger on the brake if it’s not there can cost you a wrecked sled in the backcountry. I like to use my index finger, but it depends on what your preference is. This goes for racing too.

2

Be thinking about your next line so you have time to react in tight areas, such as sidehilling through trees. And if you know you’re going to get stuck be strategic about it and try to get the sled in a position that’s easy to flip over or dig out by yourself.

3

Ride with a tether. In case the sled does get away from you, the tether can help prevent a totaled sled. I like to wear mine on my wrist because my hands will be on the handlebars, and it allows me to move my body as much as possible while riding without pulling it, whereas I’ve seen some riders wear theirs attached to their body somewhere. It’s up to you where you feel the most comfortable and safe with it.

4

Ride with people who will push your riding abilities. This will help you get out of your comfort zone and learn new skills. Don’t be afraid to take your own lines through the trees, and you may get stuck once in a while, but that’s okay because that means you are trying new things.

And most importantly, wear and know how to use safety gear so if you do get in a pickle you have a way to get yourself out or call for help. I hope you ladies have fun out there riding this season. d (Balls is a professional hillclimber and backcountry rider and is one of the newest members of Polaris’ group of snowmobile ambassadors. She made a clean sweep of the high points titles on the RMSHA circuit in 2019, winning all four womens classes.)

FOR LADIES ONLY SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR FEMININE FEATURES

For years the manufacturers of snowmobile apparel designed clothing for the majority of its market—men—and then as an afterthought, made some minor adjustments to the design and pawned it off as women’s apparel. However, in recent years some of the more popular snowmobile performance clothing manufacturers have realized there is a formidable market that continues to grow for women … and have devoted more time designing clothing specifically for this growing market. The editors of SnoWest have identified some of the manufacturers and popular designs available female riders. Here is a quick look at just of few of the product lines available.

FXR Ranger Instinct Monosuit

FXR women’s monosuits are engineered with exclusive technology, premium materials and components, and are cut specifically for women. The premium Ranger Instinct Lite Mono is designed for women who live to ride. For 2020 FXR took the most advanced monosuit in the industry and made it even better by reducing the overall weight and added a new drop seat feature, a two-way zipper that contours the lower half and can easily be unzipped making bathroom stops uncomplicated. New sublimated logos reduce ice build-up and increase the durability and mobility of the Omni-Stretch shell, while ACMT creates a dual-layer moisture shield keeping you dry and comfortable. This suit is available in Lite and Thermal Flex Insulated versions. Price: $600/$635 www.fxrracing.com

Tobe Fingo Jacket, Bib

When Tobe set out to build a women’sspecific jacket and bib, it took a different approach than most. Tobe didn’t believe that men’s and women’s gear should offer different levels of performance, durability or comfort. They should both be as reliable and technical as the materials and technology available allow. The women’s Fingo collection is the product of this belief. It utilizes the same 45,000mm Sympatex Membrane, Cordura fabrics and Armortex Kevlar reinforcements that are found throughout its 2.0 Premium collection. This also means the Fingo collection carries our industry-leading 2.0 Guarantee. Price: $349.95 Fingo Jacket; $349.95 Fingo Bib www.tobeouterwear.com

BRP highly recommends that all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and side-by-side vehicle (SSV) drivers take a training course. ATVs and SSVs can be hazardous to operate. For both ATVs and SSVs, the operator and passenger should wear a helmet, eye protection and other protective clothing. Users must always respect any applicable law establishing a minimum age for riding an ATV/SSV. For SSVs, fasten lateral net and seat belt at all times, and passenger must be at least 12 years old and able to hold handgrips and plant feet while seated against the backrest. Never carry passengers on any ATV not specifically designated for such use. For ATVs, BRP recommends not to carry any passengers under the age of twelve. Always remember that riding and alcohol/drugs don’t mix. Never engage in stunt driving. Avoid excessive speeds and be particularly careful on difficult terrain. Ride responsibly. BRP urges you to “TREAD LIGHTLY” on public and private lands. Preserve your future riding opportunities by showing respect for the environment, local laws and the rights of others when you ride. FXR BLADE HELMET HEAD’S UP

Who makes the best snowmobile helmet? That’s one question we often get asked during the course of a winter. And it’s sometimes a tough question to answer. Since everyone’s head is a little different size, some heads radiate more heat, and everyone uses different (sized) goggles, it’s tough to say what helmet is best suited for an individual’s needs. But saying that, we have used a lot of helmets in our day … some were great, others not so good. But more recently we have found the FXR Blade Helmet to fit well, do a great job in controlling temperature, and work great with a variety of goggles. The Blade’s lightweight helmet is designed to fit the face with a comfortable progressive-density liner system that keeps it snug to your head without being too restrictive. The Super-Lite composite fiber shell is constructed from aerospace-grade carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass for strength and comfort. It comes with a DOT and ECE rating. FXR offers three shell sizes to insure that its helmets are not too small or too large for a variety of heads. The Blade has a dual density EPS safety core and is compatible to most neck braces. It’s made for safety but designed for comfort. We particularly liked the quick-release/easy-adjust buckle that made it easy to put on and take off. The Blade is well-

20 SNOWEST JANUARY 2020

vented and kept us warm on the coldest days and cool on the warmest days. It has a hygienically-treated removable and washable comfort liner so we could clean or “freshen” it up after extended wear. The Blade looks great. FXR uses the highest quality UV-resistant paints and clearcoats so the helmets won’t fade with exposure to the sun. Price $230 www.fxrracing.com d

SAFETY FIRST PRODUCTS YOU SHOULD PACK Other than occasionally playing around in the field out back, most snowmobilers need to transport their sleds to the trailheads. This can be anywhere from a couple of miles to a couple of hours down the road. The editors of SnoWest Magazine are often loading up sleds to head for the snow. So we have first-hand experience in what it takes and a little insight into what features are most useful for trailering. We have reached out to a few snowmobile trailer manufacturers to see what they have that’s new and trending. Here’s a look at some of the more popular trailers on the market.

Ortovox Freerider 22Avabag

The Freerider 22 Avabag avalanche airbag pack provides the highest level of protection combined with an extremely lightweight airbag system. ICE BOXX PRO KEEP IT COOL

Every snowmobiler has encountered a situation where the weather conditions have turned a groomed trail into a solid sheet of ice that yields limited snow dust, which is vital for the cooling process of the snowmobile engine. Even with ice scratchers down, that dreaded engine light comes on and the brain box of the sled starts to retard the engine to prevent burn-down. It’s time like this when you wish there was an additional way to cool your engine. Here comes the Ice Boxx Pro. This is a product designed to keep snow packed on the top of your Polaris Pro RMK tunnel (which depends on snow circulation from the track to cool your engine) on cold days where the hardpack snow isn’t breaking free and circulating through the tunnel/rear suspension. The Ice Boxx Pro mounts on the tunnel just like the Polaris tunnel bags. You have six quarter-inch carriage bolts that fit in the tunnel slot (three on each side) which you match up with the holes in the container. Once the Ice Boxx Pro is mounted, you merely load snow in the box and shut the lid. With the snow resting on top of the tunnel, it will help cool the heat extruders mounted on the bottom side of the tunnel as the heat/cold is dispersed. The Ice Boxx Pro isn’t meant to be the only method of cooling … but it will add just enough cold to your tunnel extruders to keep you going until the snow starts to soften up and circulate more freely. The Ice Boxx Pro came in quite handy last spring when our riding area was experiencing warm days, cold nights and no precipitation. Price: $175 www.iceboxxpro.com d

TONY JENKINS’ TRIP OF A LIFETIME TO GREENLAND How many of us can truly say we’ve experienced the snowmobile trip of a lifetime? That phrase, “of a lifetime” is thrown around quite a bit these days and it seems lots of people are saying their recent experience was the best this or that “of their lifetime.” For some that’s probably the case … for others, it’s just another superlative. For Tony Jenkins, who lives in eastern Idaho, a snowmobile trip to Greenland this past spring certainly had all the makings of a trip “of a lifetime.” We sat down with Jenkins last fall and he gave us a pretty good rundown of this adventure, which included 13 nights on the ship Tulugaq or “Tulu” for short (Jenkins’ “home” for the duration of his time in Greenland) and six days of snowmobiling. WHERE NO SLED HAS GONE BEFORE Jenkins and his riding buddies rode in places in Greenland that, to anyone’s knowledge, had never seen a snowmobile before. It wasn’t overly technical riding as an extra abundance of caution had to be used due to crevasses, glaciers, unchartered territory, avalanche danger, etc. It’s not like if anything serious really went wrong, anyone else would be able to send in help. In most places, “help” doesn’t really exist. But it was adventurous riding, seeing places no one has ever seen from the seat of a snowmobile and riding where no one has been before and likely won’t ever go again. From his home in Idaho Falls, Jenkins travelled throu gh Boise, Seattle and Iceland to get to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland and the island’s largest city (population 17,796). The trip would take Jenkins and his riding group from Nuuk north along the western side of Greenland to Disko Bay, a trip of several hundred kilometers. Part of the adventure would take place near Qeqertarsuaq, a small village on Disko Island. After a few days of riding in this area, the group would head back south to Nuuk. DAY 1 This was preparation day for the group. Jenkins was the only American on the trip. There was one rider from Iceland, another from Sweden (who has since made his home in Greenland), one from Denmark and the rest from Greenland. The group (16 in all) chartered an ice breaker ship—Tulu—which in its earlier days was a ship in the Danish navy.

28 SNOWEST JANUARY 2020

Part of that first day’s preparation consisted of rounding up 14 of the snowmobiles (Lynx sleds) and ferrying them to the ship on a small flatbed pickup. Another part of the day was gathering food and other supplies—enough to last them the entire 13 days on the ship, along with a little extra in case the group got detained for whatever reason anywhere along trip. That ended up being a lot of food and supplies. About 6 p.m. that evening the group left Nuuk and headed out to open waters, turning north toward Maniitsoq. There they would pick up another rider.

DAY 2 After picking up the rider in Maniitsoq, it was another 10 hours at sea to get to the village of Sisimiut, which, Jenkins said, in his opinion is the sled capital of Greenland. They were there to pick up another rider who ultimately didn’t make it in time to get on the ship. The group did have time to tour the town and visit the local Ski-Doo dealer. Once back onboard Tulu, it was another 18 hours of sailing with the destination this time Disko Island. Day two bled into day 3 on the ship. DAY 3 Tulu and the group encountered sea ice after leaving Sisimiut. Jenkins details this part of the trip, saying, “… the sea ice was starting to move in from the north. As we were planning this trip everyone was monitoring the ice maps and were very nervous because the sea ice is always moving and shifting between the tides and wind. With these ice maps you’re given a rating of an ice scale from 1-10. As we approached the highlighted areas that showed the ice map you could read that the area was around No. 6, which wasn’t too bad. As for the owner of the ship and the locals, they knew from Sisimiut to Disko Island was probably going to be the worst area and would be the turning point of the trip. As we chugged north while listening to the ice scraping the sides of the boat like a tuna can, the guys were up in the wheel house debating if they wanted to hit the ice or not. It was determined by the captain that we were headed north and there was no turning back. “Once you start approaching Disko you start to see these massive icebergs—icebergs ranging from the size of trucks to the size of islands that stood 300 feet tall.” It was on day three that the group would finally be able to get on their sleds to ride. The group quickly realized the avalanche danger was high so they made “cautious decisions” as they headed out to ride. They headed to the mountains on Disko Island, which sits off

the coast of Greenland. They went to some mountain tops to get a view of the lay of the land. That set up day four’s ride, also on Disko Island, which we’ll get to in part two of Jenkins’ trip of a lifetime. That will come in the February issue. d

SNOWMOBILE RACING HEATING UP The 2017-18 snowmobile racing season was definitely nothing to crow about. A lack of snow in many places forced date changes and even outright race cancellations for many race circuits. But that was 2017-18. Fast forward to 2018-19 and it was an entirely different story. Abundant snow across the West meant plenty of race action in all forms from the flats to the mountains. Last year’s racing success has us hoping and crossing our fingers for another great race season this winter. We’ve once again put together a listing of some of the biggest and best racing in the West, as well as a handful of areas outside the West. For the rest of the season, here’s what you can look forward to. Of course, we all know all forms of snowmobile racing are weather-dependent, so just to be safe, check the website listed with each race association and see if any adjustments had to be made to the respective race schedules.

ALASKA MOTOR MUSHERS CLUB WWW.AMMCRACING.ORG The 2020 race schedule wasn’t finalized by the time we went to the printer with this issue so check the website for the most current information.

LEADING THE WAY

MOUNTAIN SKIS THAT WORK Although snowmobile manufacturers have come a long way in designing skis to work well in the majority of snow conditions, OEM skis still fall short of providing that added level of performance necessary for extreme mountain terrain. The editors of SnoWest Magazine have assembled a few unique snowmobile ski designs that should be considered when looking for ultimate performance in the demanding terrain of the western mountains. Here are a few skis that we have tested and can attest to as being specifically designed for mountain riding.

C&A Pro Boondocking Xtreme Skis

The C&A Pro’s Boondocking Xtreme or BX snowmobile ski is engineered for today’s technical mountain riders. It features a rocker on the bottom of the ski to allow for easy navigation through tight trees as well as a tapered rear section for ease of sidehilling. The top has integrated traction grooves for your feet to aid in deep snow boarding situations. The BX features a 7.25-inch wide tapered profile and is 42 inches long. It has a 1.125-inch center keel height; 90 degree center keel and adjustable, flexible tip; and ISR approved handle. Total ski weight is 7 lbs. including handles. It is made from UHMW Poly for ultimate durability. Price: $695.89 (with mounting kit and carbides) www.caproskis.net

SLP MoHawk Skis

The MoHawk Ski from Starting Line Products is perfect for trail, crossover and mountain riders who want flotation, aggressive bite and predictability on the new “Rider Forward” chassis of today. If you want to rail through corners while not sacrificing off-trail performance, this is the ski for you. Like its predecessors this ski utilizes SLP’s patented “Rocker Keel” for precise effortless steering. It also uses an hour glass center keel to reduce darting in hard pack conditions and gull wings for maximum control and flotation in loose snow conditions. The skis’ flex pattern design and flexible loop provides incredible control through the roughest terrain. This flex pattern is significant to the ski’s superb handling and control. It allows the ski to absorb the rough terrain, making for a more predictable and comfortable ride. These features make the MoHawk Ski the most versatile ski ever made. The Mohawk shaped traction pads on the top edge of the skis provide the rider with a place to step when climbing around on the ski if they are stuck. Price: $671.65 (with mounting kit and carbides) www.startinglineproducts.com

SlyDog Attack Skis

The SlyDog Attack ski’s tapered tail gives you a biting edge against the snow when sidehilling and technical riding. Its unique Snow Induction process improves cornering and powder riding capability by catching snow at the front of the ski and forcing it through a narrowing channel and up against the reverse angle keel. The reverse angle keel design holds packed snow between the keel and channel walls to help give the ski its own footprint and prevent darting. A taller keel height means more aggressive handling. The channel narrows the length of the ski to compress snow against the reverse angle keel. This creates a solid base for the keel to corner against, as well as creating lift when riding in powder. Price: $475.95 (with mounting kit and four-inch round bar carbide) www.slydogskis.com d

Speed Shop Polaris 850 Kit

The Polaris 850 Stage 1 Mountain Kit is offered by Speed Shop and is designed to crank out some awesome power while dropping a lot of weight. The kit can gain 7-8 peak horsepower with a lot of grunty low-end and mid-range torque gains as well. This kit has killer throttle response in deep snow and a powerful pull. The billet head gains some serious horsepower and torque, plus it simply looks cool. There are domes designed for either 3,000-plus feet or 6,000-plus feet elevation. There also are two muffler options. The stainless steel muffler weighs just more than 6 lbs.—about 11 lbs. lighter than the stock muffler. The titanium muffler, weighing 3.5 lbs., is 13.5 lbs. lighter than stock. The Speed Shop Pro-Shift clutch kit is adjustable and designed to work great in any elevation. Price: $899 or $1119 with titanium muffler www.speedshopinc.com

34 SNOWEST JANUARY 2020

The BCA Tracker S is the newest avalanche transceiver to hit the market for the 2019-20 season. Backcountry Access named the Tracker S for its simplicity and speed of operation for all backcountry skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers in need of a fast avalanche rescue. BCA’s new Tracker S offers the same proven performance and ease of operation as the Tracker 3, without the advanced features of motionsensing, micro-USB port and upgradeable software needed by snow safety professionals, providing a lower price to the consumer. The high-performance Tracker S avalanche beacon includes harness and batteries. The bottom line on the Tracker S is that it’s easy to use under stress. It gives you a fast, bright distance and direction display—even in extremely cold temps—and no extraneous icons or other bells and whistles. The LED digital display is “real time,” providing instantaneous distance and direction information, no matter how fast you’re moving. This fast processing also means that in multiple burials there’s no delay when moving from one victim to the next. Unique to the Tracker S is the blue Options button on the face of the transceiver. By placing your finger on the Tracker S Options button, you can use Signal Suppression (SS) and Big Picture (BP) modes, advanced operating modes used in multiple burial scenarios. One touch to the blue button activates Signal Suppression, which will suppress the strongest signal for one minute and allow you to move away from that and lock onto the next strongest signal. If you hold down the button and continue to hold it down, this will put you into Big Picture mode. In Big Picture, the Tracker S picks up all transmitting signals within range and provides you with a distance reading and directional light so you can determine the best possible search strategy. Price $299.95 www.backcountryaccess.com

CKX Mission Helmet

The new CKX Mission Helmet is lightweight and insulated to offer fog-free performance for trail riding. It is designed to ride at full speed and for long periods of time. This integrated Air Management System provides you with an environment free of condensation and frost to maintain full visibility while riding and when stationary. It features a wide opening with an oversized shield. Price: $569.99 www.ckxgear.com

Klim Snow Glove Collection

With snow on the way, Klim has released a healthy collection of new and redesigned winter gloves ready for highspeed trails, big mountain powder and everything in between. Fully waterproof and highly dexterous, the collection of new Klim snowmobile gloves for men and women offers an unprecedented array of features and options. All-new for this season are the non-insulated Spool and Inversion GTX Gloves. Both waterproof gloves feature fully bonded +Gore Grip Technology—a glove layer laminate system for creating a unified feeling glove and perfect feedback from the controls. These gloves share Mult-e-Touch screen fingertips, goggle squeegees, silicone control grips and reflective hits, but there are a few key differences separating these Gore-Tex gloves from each other. The Inversion GTX uses a nylon spandex palm with water resistant suede overlays and the Spool uses a full leather palm and added knuckle protection to take the sting off tree branches. Even during testing stages, both these gloves quickly became the favorites of top riders like Dan Adams, Chris Burandt, Matt Entz and Jared Sessions. The PowerXross series of gloves, which have become a gold standard among mountain riders with their highly functional backhand insulation and grip articulation, are redesigned with improvements all around. The lightweight backhand insulation combines with articulated fingers and +Gore Grip Technology that bonds key layers inside the gloves for great tactile feedback, avoiding the movement of layers between your hands and the controls. Built on the fan-favorite waterproof PowerXross Glove platform, Klim developed a female-specific version called the Bombshell. These gloves are tailored specifically for women riders and feature 60 percent more insulation over the men’s PowerXross. All PowerXross and Bombshell gloves also have new Mult-e-Touch thumb and forefingers for easy cell phone use. For trail riders, the legendary Klimate Gauntlet Glove is

redesigned with specially mapped insulation thicknesses and the grip needed for high-speed gloves. Joining the Klimate Gauntlet Glove is the new Ember Gauntlet Glove, designed specifically for women. Klim took the functionality of the Klimate Gauntlet and added more insulation while adjusting the fit to properly suit women riders. Price: Bombshell $99.99; Ember Gauntlet $89.99; Inversion $109.99; Klimate Gauntlet $89.99; PowerXross Gauntlet $129.99; PowderXross $99.99; Spool $129.99 www.klim.com

Fully insulated, waterproof outerwear is the only gear that lets you properly experience high-speed trail snowmobiling and Klim is releasing a full suite of new gear just in time for winter. Klim has four new sets of insulated gear—the redesigned Keweenaw, Klimate and Kaos sets, and the new women’s Spark Jacket and Pant. While these pieces have unique differences, all Klim trail gear shares key safety and comfort features. Klim uses Gore-Tex laminates combined with various durable exterior face fabrics as the front line against winter elements. Inside the gear, 3M Thinsulate synthetic insulation traps body heat to retain warmth, but allows moisture from sweat to escape and help keep you warm and dry. It’s highly resistant to water absorption, meaning that unlike down, it retains insulating properties when wet. The redesigned Keweenaw Jacket and Bib is Klim’s most premium trail set, with a removable insulating liner, the greatest amount of storage, the most ventilation, the best warmth-for-

weight synthetic insulation and most durable fabrics. The redesigned Klimate and Kaos gear sets offer a balance of warmth, durability and ventilation with a focus on lighter weight and mobility. The Klimate Jacket and Bib are warmer and more durable than the Kaos, but not quite to the level of the Keweenaw. Meanwhile, the Kaos Jacket and Pant offer the lightest weight and greatest mobility, with slightly less durability and warmth than the Klimate or Keweenaw. New for 2020, the Spark Jacket and Pant is designed specifically for women. Klim listened to female riders and used their feedback to develop their first purpose-built women’s trail set with all the key safety features found in the other trail gear. All four suits come in the most popular colors. Price: Keweenaw jacket and bib $419.99 each; Klimate jacket and bib $369.99 each; Kaos jacket and bib $299.99 each; Spark jacket and bib $299.99 each www.klim.com d

All three models in the new BLAST lineup—the mountain BLAST M 4000, trail BLAST ZR 4000 and sport-utility BLAST LT 4000—are true mid-size vehicles powered by the industry’s first electronic fuel-injected, single-cylinder, 2-stroke engine—the 65 plus horsepower-class C-TEC2 4000, with 397cc of power. Riders will enjoy much of the same technology found in BLAST’s fullsize counterparts, such as the Arctic Drive System and Arctic Mountain Suspension (AMS); the mountain version also features the revolutionary ALPHA ONE suspension system. And with a smaller chassis, these models offer better visibility and handling that makes it easy to maneuver and fun to drive. BLAST is the perfect entry-level option for the customer looking for a sub-$10,000 sled or the experienced rider who wants an easy-to-ride snowmobile that is a blast to ride.

MODEL DETAILS The BLAST lineup is designed and manufactured in Thief River Falls, MN, and the engine is built in St. Cloud, MN. The BLAST line includes the mountain BLAST M with ALPHA ONE single-beam rear suspension, trail BLAST ZR and sport utility BLAST LT 4000 mid-size. At the heart of the BLAST models is the industry’s first electronic fuel-injected, single-cylinder, 2-stroke engine. The 65 plus horsepower-class

C-TEC2 4000, 397cc engine has plenty of power for the experienced rider and smooth power delivery for a new rider. DIGITAL GAUGE Quickly access vehicle information on one easy-to-read display. The mountain lineup sees the addition of the revolutionary, adjust-on-the-fly ATAC (previously called iACT) suspension system on the M 8000 Mountain Cat ALPHA ONE.

SINGLE-CYLINDER 2-STROKE EFI ENGINE With an industry-first design that’s compact and lightweight (less than 50 lbs.), this EFI engine brings 65-horsepower (397cc) performance to every ride. A 3-stage exhaust valve system takes this power to the next level, delivering improved throttle response and better overall engine performance. A counterbalance shaft eliminates most engine vibration. The result: a lightweight-but-mighty power source that fuels a ride like no other. ELECTRIC START Get the convenience of a turn-key electric start system. to transfer weight when cornering. To keep the sleds lightweight, Arctic Cat equipped them with the same Arctic Mountain Suspension (AMS) found on full-size mountain sleds and hydraulic twin tube shocks—front and back—to provide ample absorption. The BLAST models feature a key start so the rider can just turn the key and go. The vehicles’ digital instrumentation provides standard data, while hand and thumb warmers ensure an enjoyable experience even in the coldest temperatures. To work or play all day, the sleds have an 11.7-gallon fuel tank. The new, sleek bodywork is all Arctic Cat and provides the perfect finishing touch to the mid-size package.

ALPHA ONE SINGLE-BEAM SUSPENSION The single-beam rear suspension unlocks more maneuverability and provides a ride unlike anything else.

BLAST M 4000 Built for the new mountain rider but still a blast in the backcountry for the experienced rider, the new BLAST M 4000 combines the DNA of the full-size M 8000 models with a smaller stature and mill, offering a fun deep-snow experience. Similar to its full-size counterparts, the BLAST M 4000 features the Arctic Mountain Suspension (AMS) with lightweight spindles and mountain-specific suspension geometry. The front suspension has 7.2 inches of travel, an adjustable 37-39-inch ski stance and is equipped with 7-inch G2 ProClimb skis for predictable handling in all conditions and deep-snow flotation. In back, the proven ALPHA single-beam rear

BLAST ZR 4000 The BLAST ZR 4000 is the perfect mid-size trail sled for the whole family. Whether the rider is moving up from a youth model or an adult who wants a fun, lightweight, easy-to-ride sled, the BLAST ZR 4000 delivers. The BLAST ZR 4000 is a true mid-size trail package. The AMS front suspension offers 7.2 inches of front travel, an adjustable 37.5-38.5-inch ski stance and is equipped with 6-inch trail skis. In back, the slide-rail suspension with dual shock and adjustable torsion springs provides 10.7 inches of rear travel and plenty of agility to conquer every twist and turn on the trail. BLAST LT 4000 Bigger isn’t always better, and the BLAST LT 4000 is the perfect mid-size sled for the cabin owner, outdoorsman or small business owner who needs a reliable work partner. The BLAST LT 4000’s mid-size lightweight chassis makes it easier to maneuver than full size sleds when hauling or towing for less driver fatigue during those long workdays. Its 4000 engine has enough brawn to take on the task at hand, and its value price is attractive to those customers who contemplated a sport utility snowmobile but were hesitant about a full-size price tag. The BLAST LT 4000 has an AMS front suspension with 7.2 inches of travel, an adjustable 37.5-38.5-inch ski stance and is equipped with 6-inch trail skis. The utilitarian XTRA-ACTION Rear Suspension provides 12.5 inches of travel, and features dual shocks and adjustable torsion springs to help when carrying loads. RAPTOR KINETIC COIL OVER SHOCKS FOR AXYS RMK When Matt Entz contacted us about testing the latest Raptor Kinetic shocks, we were excited about the performance improvements the shocks had to offer over the factory RMK shocks. Most riders don’t put enough thought into their sled’s suspension. The factories do a pretty good job at putting quality shocks under modern mountain sleds. But they’re valved for

422610-51IceAgeMfg14h.indd SNOWEST JANUARY 2020 1

a very broad range of rider weights, riding styles and snow conditions. The stock shock package on your new sled has to work well enough to cover the rider in Alaska on coastal wet snow, the rider in Colorado in continental fluffy powder and the rider in Maine, boondocking through thick trees. Additionally, sledders are historically notorious for not keeping their shocks

11/22/19 10:39 AM

serviced the same way, say, a motocross rider would. Your sled’s shocks should be re-sprung to match your weight, re-valved to match your riding style, and have the oil changed at least once a season, depending on how many miles you put on the clock. The best way to improve your sled’s handling, though, is to replace the stock one-for-all shocks with some high-tech aftermarket shocks. Raptor’s Kinetic series shocks feature a patent-pending bypass system that allows shock oil to bypass the main valve piston in certain actions, known as the Terrain Sensitive Bypass Zone. That allows the shock to maintain optimum bottom-out resistance yet provide a plush ride. The Kinetic series shocks feature a piggyback reservoir. The tuning capabilities are unreal, since you can always rely on the Kinetic’s bottoming resistance. You can build a very plushriding shock, or a very aggressive racestyle shock. We went with the Matt Entz mountain setup. We installed them on our Axys Pro RMK 850 163, which actually has a pretty good ride calibration out of the box. The Pro RMK 850 has a new front end and shock package compared to what’s been on the 800 since 2016. So we were anxious to see just how the Raptor Kinetic shocks affected the ride of the sled. Right away, the ride quality was noticeably different. At cruising speed,

the shocks took the nose-to-tail pitch and yaw out of the sled. Everything seemed to flatten out and chassis movement was reduced. Hitting the mogul trails at speed showed more improvements. The sled maintained a straight line better with far less rear-end deflection off hard hits, especially on a long line of repeated bumps where stock shocks tend to heat up. The Raptor’s performance didn’t change from the first minute of the ride to the last. The sled’s weight transfer and how the track was able to work in the snow seemed to get better as well. For our snow in the Idaho/Wyoming region, we prefer the Series 6 2.6-inch RMK track over the Series 7 3.0-inch track simple because it walks up on top of the snow better. The Raptor shocks improved that characteristic. The track seemed to get on snow better than before. The way Entz has these shocks valved allows the front rail shock to collapse under acceleration so that the rail is letting the track climb as opposed to pushing the rail down, forcing it to trench. These shocks are actually pretty incredible. The guys with the big Instagram accounts make it look like they’re in chest-deep powder 100 feet from their trailer ramp. But the reality is, mountain sledders are some of the best trail racers in the world. We all have stretches of rough trails we have to ride to get to our zones. Nobody wants to compromise deep snow ability to make the sled more comfortable on the trail. At the same time, nobody wants to ride a sled with the suspension compliance of a horse-drawn wagon down the trail, either. Raptor’s Kinetic shocks give you the upgrade to a “best of both worlds” suspension. You get the best possible rough-trail ride while actually improving deep snow performance. WPS MOVES INTO NEW WAREHOUSE We reported last fall that Boise-based Western Power Sports (WPS) was expanding its headquarters on Gowen Road near the Boise Airport and was hoping to move in soon. Well, that has happened and the additional 105,500-square-foot addition is quickly filling up. We stopped by WPS headquarters in October to see the nowcompleted facility and it’s amazing how the cavernous warehouse is now nearly full of a myriad of powersports products. The 105,500 square feet of space is in addition to the nearly 275,000 square feet of warehouse and office space that was already in place. “The new space will be used for overstock to feed the new expanded pick module,” Craig Shoemaker, WPS CEO, said last summer, “to get more products out faster and to meet the continued growth demand. This will bring WPS headquarters to more than 380,000 square feet with the new office expansion being completed spring of 2020. Stay tuned for other expansion news throughout the U.S. later this summer.” The Boise facility is one of six WPS warehouses in the U.S. d

To help answer those questions, we present our second annual Ultimate Snowmobile Travel Guide. Does SnoWest’s Guide include absolutely every area there is to ride in the West? No. But we are showing off those areas which love snowmobilers and cater to them. For ease of use, we break down these areas by state, letting you quickly find an area you might be most interested in—at least for this season. We hope you enjoy the Guide and are sure you’ll love your experience in the West.

For many snowmobilers, their dream trip would be the mountains and meadows of the West where the peaks reach endlessly into the sky and the powder piles up deep on mountain slopes, valleys, meadows and trails. It’s not just the excellent snowmobiling sledders come for, it’s also the spectacular scenery all across the West where you can access peaks up to 12,000 feet. For those of us who live here, it’s something we get to live, breath and sled every winter. For others who have to travel to get here, there are lots of logistical questions. Those might include: Where to ride? Where to stay? Which areas have trail systems? Can I rent a
