onica Ruiz, best known as “the Peloton wife”, appears on B&B as Dr. Escobar, an acting gig she’s grateful for in the aftermath of her polarizing commercial for the exercise bike that still has people talking on social media. “It was funny because I was getting so many people reaching out to me in every way you can imagine,” Ruiz shares of the post-commercial media blitz. “Everyone wanted me to discuss this ad. I didn’t want to discuss it but when BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL reached out I was like, ‘Whoa. Wait a minute. Is this for real?’ I wasn’t really sure what to think of it. My agent was like, ‘They want to give you a real role. They don’t want you to play the Peloton wife,’ and I was like, ‘Okay!’ ” As it turns out, Ruiz was actually a fan of the soap. “I started watching the show when I was in high school, so it’s been a long time,” she notes. “It’s funny because I

most amazing actresses ever. I’m in these very dramatic scenes delivering some pretty bad news to Sally.” Ruiz wanted to bring realism to her approach. “I tried to think about some of the doctors I’ve had in my life, especially my OB when I had my little ones; someone who was very caring that I saw frequently,” she explains. “That was someone I thought about when I thought about this character. She’s delivering bad news but is caring. I was trying to think what doctors I’ve had who’ve had really great bedside manners.” Ruiz, who has appeared in film, TV and commercials, had a great time on set. “It was a whirlwind,” she reports.

■ One thing leads to another while Eric and Sarah are bonding over Mickey’s illness, and Xander ends up finding the twosome in a state of undress. “Xander can’t help but assume the worst,” says his portrayer, Paul Telfer, noting that his character immediately thinks the pair made love. “His greatest fear all along has been that the baby will bring Eric and Sarah back together, and now it’s becoming a reality right in front of him. The bottom falls out of his world. He’s just shattered and hollowed out by this.” After Eric leaves, Sarah reveals that she couldn’t sleep with Eric because she realized she had feelings for Xander. “It’s the exact opposite of everything Xander assumed, and what he’s been longing to hear,” points out Telfer. “And it’s almost the best way he could be presented with the news. late- breaking news ■ Between worrying about her health and fretting about Wyatt reconciling with his ex, Sally’s week goes from bad to worse. “She is having a really difficult time,” sighs her portrayer, Courtney Hope. “She doesn’t know what’s wrong with her. Things at work aren’t going well and, obviously, things in her relationship aren’t going well. She prides herself on being strong and being that force to be reckoned with. But right now, it’s hard because in all of these different categories of her life, things aren’t really going well. She’s definitely scared. Because she knows she never gets sick, she’s like, ‘What the heck is wrong with me?’ ” Despite her concerns, Sally refuses to turn to Wyatt for comfort. “Because everything took a complete 180 with him since their engagement, I don’t think Sally wants to stir the pot,” notes Hope. “The last thing she wants is to go, ‘Hey, I’m not feeling well. Come to me and help me,’ and make it seem like that’s kind of her ‘Cry wolf,’ if you

“She’s definitely scared.” She’s like, ‘I don’t want you to think that I’m playing the sympathy card.’ ” No matter what her diagnosis is, “She does not want to show her insecurity,” Hope stresses. “She’d rather just say nothing. She doesn’t know what’s wrong. Maybe it is stress, or heartbreak, but whatever it is, she doesn’t want

to show all her cards just yet. In her mind, she’s being strong. She’s being independent.” Happily for Sally, she finds an unexpected ally in Katie. “Katie injects herself into what’s going on by happenstance,” explains the actress. “She was at a low point and it was hard to cover it up. Sally really wants to be honest and talk to someone. She’s scared. Katie has been through so many medical things that there’s a trust there, of someone that understands the gravity of not feeling well and not knowing what it is. It’s been nice to have her there.”

■ As Peter-related tension ratchets up between Finn and Anna, he makes a fateful choice that could have a major impact on their future as a couple. “Finn worries that Anna is getting in over her head,” sets up Co-Head Writer Dan O’Connor, “that perhaps her belief and trust in her son is blinding her to the truth about what Peter is capable of.” Picks up Co-Head Writer Chris Van Etten, “It doesn’t sit well with him, but Anna’s argument is that this evidence that Anna has come across is circumstantial, at best. That is what Anna would argue over and over again — that to use this to paint a certain picture of Peter would be a very incomplete picture. There is no smoking gun, there is no bloody handkerchief — it is purely circumstantial.” Finn relays to Anna that according to Sam, Robert is still investigating Peter, news that does not sit well with the ex-Mrs. Scorpio. When Robert shows up to see Emma, he must face Anna’s wrath over the deal he’s made with Sam and Jason 8

Help Wanted: Finn (Michael Easton, r.) may have just what Sam (Kelly Monaco) and Jason (Steve Burton) are looking for.

to get the goods on Peter. “Anna feels that if Robert is talking smack about Peter, it is largely out of prejudice,” Van Etten says. “Because he has Faison’s blood in him, Robert has no use for him. As far as Anna is concerned, Robert is half-crazy. Robert’s point of view is that he comes by his prejudice honestly. Faison put him, Anna and their friends through hell, going back decades. Robert knows that Peter’s upbringing and the way he came into Port Charles casts him in a very dark light. Robert will not be persuaded that Peter is not worth looking into and making absolutely sure that he is not a bad actor.” While Robert and Anna are having it out, Finn is weighing his own options. “Finn knows that Anna is going to protect her son the way he is going to protect Violet,” Van Etten notes. “The question for Finn is,

how does his desire to protect Violet come against Anna’s desire to protect Peter? That’s what he must weigh in the end — is there a way to maintain his family with Anna and Violet, and yet know that Peter is out and about?” Ultimately, Finn does make a decision about whether to funnel what he knows about Peter to two very interested parties: Jason and Sam. “He crosses with Sam and Jason at a very opportune time in his deliberation about whether or not he should share this information with anyone,” O’Connor previews. “He is aware that Jason and Sam’s relationship is somewhat dependent on finding information about Peter that they can give to Robert — and his hands need to be clean. Nobody can know where this information came from because he would never want Anna to know.”

■ Billy shows up at Crimson Lights at Victoria’s behest for a meeting to discuss their kids. Because she saw a compromising photo of Billy and Amanda, however, Victoria lights into him about sharing more than a friendship with Ms. Sinclair. Cue Amanda’s arrival. “When you’re having a heated conversation about a certain person and that person pops up, then it’s normal that all that energy you’ve been bottling up gets released,” says Mishael Morgan (Amanda). “I mean, the object of your conversation is standing right there, so that is very bad timing for Amanda.” Both Amanda and Billy insist that they’re only friends, but it doesn’t placate Victoria. “Amanda is a straight shooter, so she is in many ways on Victoria’s side in this situation, but Amanda is now in a place where she has to defend herself,” the actress points out. “Victoria doesn’t know that Amanda’s moral compass is very strong and that she agrees that Billy shouldn’t be opening up to her but at the same time,

she’s not a pushover and she stands her ground.” Victoria declares that she has proof of their affair. “Amanda and Billy are not only unaware that pictures of them have been presented to Victoria, but they also do not know of Victor’s involvement, so they are really taken aback,” explains Morgan. “They know they Just Friends: Amanda didn’t do anything (Morgan, l.) and Billy inappropriate, so (Jason Thompson) defend Amanda is curitheir friendship to Victoria ous about what this (Amelia Heinle). proof is.” HOWARD WISE/JPI Victoria refuses to divulge any further can’t get away from these details and storms out, problems.” Amanda returns to her hotel suite, where she’s shocked to find her ex-fiancé, Ripley, sitting on her bed. “This is the man she’s been talking about with Billy,” Morgan shudders. “She’s been trying to keep leaving Billy and Amanda track of Ripley but she lost baffled. “Amanda is very him and now here he is, frustrated at this point,” in her hotel room, and she sighs Morgan. “She relo- is instantly terrified. Sharon prepares for her first chemotherapy treatment by planning ahead and cooking meals. “Sharon is really in her own mind, as anybody would be, so she’s trying to feel normal by doing the normal things she enjoys, but she’s overcompensating a little bit,” says Sharon Case (Sharon). “She has no idea how she’s going to feel after the chemo, so she’s preparing for those times she may not want to cook.” Sharon points out to Rey that treatment protocols have changed and she might not feel any bad side effects from the chemo for a while. Case notes, “There are a lot of new medications and technology, so chemo isn’t what it used to be.” Later, Sharon is trying to sleep when she hears someone call out her name. She looks up and is pleased to see Mariah, but taking a closer look, Sharon realizes it’s her late daughter, Cassie. “Sharon’s not afraid,” Case affirms. “She truly believes that Cassie has somehow come at a time that Sharon could really use a visit from her daughter.”

Party Time: Zoe (Kiara Barnes) is touched when Thomas (Atkinson) gives her a birthday to remember.

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Thomas Surprises Zoe Thomas hosts a surprise birthday party for Zoe, but he has ulterior motives. “In this situation, he’s finding another way to get at Hope,” explains Matthew Atkinson (Thomas). “He has been pining after Hope for so long and now, Thomas is ramping that up by throwing this huge party and then giving all this affection to Zoe. I don’t think any of it is really that genuine. He’s doing it for the purpose of getting a reaction.” Thomas gets a response out of both Douglas and Hope. “Douglas feels like Thomas felt when he was a child, like he’s losing one of his parents,” notes Atkinson. “That’s the whole point of this. Sadly, he’s using Douglas again to achieve those goals. Obviously, his eyes are still 100 percent focused on Hope.” As for Thomas’s feelings for Zoe, “He doesn’t have genuine, real intentions of romance, but he’s enjoying spending time with her,” the actor shares. “He’s not out to hurt her. It’s more about enjoying the moment: ‘Let’s have some fun. Why do we have to put labels on things?’ It’s not that big of a deal to Thomas.”

GENERAL HOSPITAL Franco’s New Gig

PHOTOS: XJ JOHNSON/JPI

After a tension-filled cross with Nikolas, Franco heads off to see Mrs. Cassadine — his own ex-lover, Ava. Where her new marriage is concerned, Co-Head Writer Dan O’Connor explains, “Franco knows that not everything is on the up-and-up. Because they begrudgingly call each other friend, Franco wants to make sure that she knows what she’s doing, that she may be playing with fire.” Ava ends up commissioning him to paint her portrait. “Ava getting her portrait made to replace the one of Helena that went up in smoke basically cements her place as the co-head of the Cassadine estate,” O’Connor says. Following their meet-up, Franco tells his wife all about his new assignment. “I think Elizabeth is always a little suspicious when it comes to Ava,” O’Connor notes. “But she trusts Franco more than she is suspicious of Ava’s intentions, and she knows that Franco is an artist who hasn’t been able to create in a very long time. She wants to support that, even if she is a little uneasy about him being in close proximity to someone who could be dangerous.”

The Artist At Work: Franco (Roger Howarth, with Rebecca Herbst as Elizabeth) gets ready to bust out his paintbrushes.

And We’re Back: Nicole (Zucker) and Eric (Greg Vaughan) find love again.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Nicole And Eric Reconcile Nicole finally admits to Eric that she and Brady only pretended to be a couple to keep Kristen away from Brady — and so she could get a little revenge. “Nicole still has a huge amount of love for Eric. So if there’s even a slight possibility that they can get back together, she wants the truth to come out,” explains her portrayer, Arianne Zucker. Her disclosure pays off when Eric confesses he was jealous. “What woman doesn’t like to hear that?” muses the actress. Eric reveals he almost slept with Sarah, but is glad she pulled back. He declares that he’s missed Nicole, wants to reconcile and forgives her. “Nicole is all in,” says Zucker. “She never wanted to end their relationship in the first place. It was such torture when they broke up. Eric is the love of her life and the person she wants to spend the rest of her life with.” The pair shares a kiss, and Eric moves back in with Nicole. Then, they make love. “For them to be back together, not only emotionally but also physically, it’s such a heightened moment for the two of them,” adds Zucker. “It shows that they can get through anything.” 15

gazed blankly at the second hand of a clock, nearly hypnotized by its amplified ticking. Informed that the test was inconclusive and she required an ultrasound, Case’s head bobbed unsteadily in acknowledgment, her expression dazed. Even more rattled after learning she would need a biopsy, Sharon was not yet willing to share her burden, and she deflected when Rey wondered why she seemed preoccupied. Adopting an almost too-lighthearted disposition, she chirped that everything was fine. Back at the doctor’s, Sharon tried to keep her dread at bay, whispering to herself, “Stay positive.” In the anxious hours that followed as Sharon awaited her results, Case played her as fighting a losing battle against her anxiety, by turns jumpy, distracted and short-tempered. Then, at home doing laundry, Sharon’s whole world stopped when the phone rang, the fear in her eyes obvious. Sharon then sat Rey down to tell him that she had cancer, vacillating throughout the discussion between numbness and anguish, disbelief and pragmatism. In a private moment after another overwhelming trip to the doctor, Sharon’s stoicism crumbled; exhausted by her running thoughts, and by the sheer energy it took to stay optimistic, she broke down. When Nick came knocking, Sharon wiped away her tears, inhaled a shaky breath, and made the decision to let him in, literally and figuratively, and to let her loved ones face her uncertain future with her. In scene after scene, Case nailed Sharon’s vulnerability and her strength as she struggled to come to terms with a reality that had changed overnight. Her work was subtle, heartfelt and stirring. 29

■ Why are so many soap characters trying to force romances with people who don’t want them? Sing it with me: “I can’t make you love me if you don’t ...” ■ The poster child for desperate nonsense is DAYS’s Kristen DiMera, who wore a Nicole mask to trick Brady into bed. Kristen (ripping up a photo of Nicole): “You can’t stop me from being with Brady because I won’t let you!” Brady has no say in that? Way to neuter a popular leading man. Ditto Eli — Gabi was able to blackmail Lani away from him so she could “have” him; Eli fell for it and proposed. But nothing is more preposterous than “Princess Gina” and “Stefano”, two mentally ill characters in the bodies of beloved vets Hope and Patch, out to destroy a happily married couple. “Stefano”: “Time is of the essence if we are to win John and Marlena before our true identities are discovered.” How do you “win” a person? And if you succeed, how 30

do you “keep” them? It’ll take more than a fake British accent and pinky ring to hoodwink John and his Doc. Marlena: “I can’t explain why Steve is behaving the way he is.” What, they don’t teach “body inhabiting” in medical school? ■ Someone’s inhabiting Billy’s body on Y&R, because that comic rascal has

Nick was on a pathetic path for awhile, too. Nick: “Maybe I can convince Chelsea to come home to me.” Phyllis (sarcastic): “Yay, awesome.”

Blackmail is really the only entertaining way to go when forcing someone into a relationship. Genoa City. Billy: “You seem convinced I

light on characters fans love, with Quinn questioning everyone’s romances but her own. Quinn: “You proposed to Sally out of guilt.” Wyatt: “What’s your point, mom?” Quinn: “Flo is the woman you want to be your wife.” Because parents forcing partners on their kids always works. Wyatt: “Let’s talk about your love life.” Quinn: “You asked for it. The many uses of a spatula ...” Poor Wyatt covered his eyes and the action shifted to the other love triangle Quinn stuck her nose in. Ridge (re: Shauna): “Our friendship crossed the line.” Brooke: “Crossed the line?” Ridge: “We kissed.” As refreshing as it is that Ridge just came out and confessed the smooch, the resulting catfight between Brooke, Shauna and Quinn over “who Ridge should be with” makes him an afterthought and diminishes his character. Real people need time to heal after a breakup and can’t be “convinced” to love someone else. Quinn (to Shauna): “If they end up splitting up, you’ll be

there to comfort him.” That’s not how love works. When it comes to advice, father knows best, Ridge. Eric: “What are you doing?” ■ If you’re going to force yourself on your enemies, do it like those bawdy bitches on GH. Tracy Quartermaine not only doesn’t “make” people love her, she doesn’t care. Tracy (to Brook Lynn): “If you’re looking for someone to worry about your feelings, you’re in the wrong family.” Granddaughter Dearest then announced she had changed her last name to Quartermaine. Tracy: “What’s your angle?” Warm fuzzies aren’t her strong suit. Cue the Q board meeting and enter Nelle, who inherited her sudden husband Shiloh’s ELQ shares and relished the chance to walk into a room full of people (including her ex, Michael) that hate her guts. Nelle (to Michael): “You really think you can pay me off and I’ll go away? I had your baby!” Tracy: “That’s exactly what he thinks.” Nelle is a classic villain because the suddenly

After the Q’s threw Nelle out, she showed up at Brad’s with a suitcase and her vision board, which is now part of my vision board for 2020. Brad (opening the door): “What ...?” Nelle: “Is that anyway to treat your baby’s mother?” She’s going to drive that blackmail cart till the wheels fall off. Blackmail is really the only entertaining way to go when forcing someone into a relationship. E.g.: Ava demanded a post-nup that gives her an island in exchange for the document Nikolas needs to prove he’s the Cassadine heir. Nikolas: “As long as you’re holding onto the codicil, I have to go along with this sham marriage.” Ava: “Just because it was brought about by revenge doesn’t make it a sham.” Bam! All together now: “I can’t make you love me ... unless I have a codicil.” ■ Hey. It’s only my opinion. 앮 31

WAR GAMES Eric and Ridge discuss how to ease tensions between Quinn and Brooke, but the women refuse to come to terms. Quinn strikes back at Brooke for interfering in her marriage to Eric. Quinn shares details of the feud with Thomas. He offers to work with her against their common enemy.

FEELING BAD Wyatt tells Liam that Sally refuses to accept that he has reconciled with Flo. A concerned Wyatt hears that Sally has been off her game and assures his ex that he will always be there for her. Wyatt goes to Bill for advice about Sally. The

Spencer men acknowledge that both of them have put Sally through the wringer. Shauna and Quinn are thrilled Wyatt and Flo have reunited but worry that Sally may still be an obstacle for the duo.

I remember when Nikolas faked his death on GH and he ended up sitting next to Ava on the plane, but why was she leaving Port Charles? Thank you. Ann K., via email A Ava wasn’t leaving town for good in June

2016, as Nikolas planned to do; she was traveling to London on gallery business when she encountered Nikolas.

Q

Please refresh my memory. On B&B, didn’t Stephanie have a friend who was a social worker who oversaw Brooke’s case when she lost custody of her children? Who was that actress and is she still working today? I’d love an update, if possible. Thank you. Lorraine L., via email

Twin Peeks suggestion: Brittany Snow [ex-Susan, GUIDING LIGHT], who is on ALMOST FAMILY, and Jessy Schram, who has been in several Hallmark movies. I think they look so much alike that I often have to check the credits to see which actress is in the show I’m watching.

High Flying: Ava (Maura West) and Nikolas (then-Tyler Christopher) were seatmates in 2016. HOWARD WISE/JPI

A That was Juanita Jennings who played

Dorothy Bascomb, an acquaintance of Stephanie’s, on B&B in 2007. Perhaps best known as Edna for her 2009-11 run on MEET THE BROWNS, Jennings was most recently seen as Grandma Ruby on STAR from 201719 and in a starring role on the Gina Torres (ex-Magdalena/Nell, ONE LIFE TO LIVE) SUITS spin-off, PEARSON, and will be featured on an upcoming episode of THE CHI.

Q

I’m confused by something on GH. Were Nelle and Michael ever actually married? C.H., via email A No, although the characters were seem-

ingly wed in 2018, the union was never valid, because disappearing ink was used on the marriage license.

How many times has Katherine Kelly Lang been nominated for a Daytime Emmy? I love her as Brooke on B&B! Thanks. G.C., via email A Lang has received four nominations over

the course of her nearly 33 years in soaps. Her first nod was for a Special Fan Award alongside Sean Kanan (ex-Deacon) for America’s Favorite Couple in 2002. In 2013, she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress. The following year, she was up as Outstanding Lead Actress. Lastly, she was nominated as Senior Producer for the Crystal Chappell executive-produced digital series, VENICE, in 2017.

Q

My favorite new show is ALL RISE and the actor playing Mark looks very familiar to me. Was he ever on a soap? C.R., via email A Wilson Bethel played Y&R’s miscreant

Ryder Callahan, who was the son of Sheila Carter and Kevin’s abusive dad, Terrible Tom. Ryder showed up in Genoa City in 2009 but skipped town in 2011 and is currently still on the run from the law. Since leaving Y&R, Bethel has co-starred on HART OF DIXIE, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER and DAREDEVIL.

SOUND OFF THEY’VE GOT IT There are few couples in daytime who just have “it” in the way Billy Flynn and Kate Mansi’s “Chabby” do on DAYS. It’s been a pleasure to watch them bring their magic back to Salem. Chad and Abigail’s epic journey deserved to be explored again after their rushed exit last year. After all, they’re the scions of two legacy families who have so much to offer, so it’s been nice see-

ing them face obstacles together again while still being allowed to exist as individuals. I can’t wait to see what’s coming for “Chabby” and their family. Diandra, via email

THE BIG REVEAL The scene where DAYS’s “Stefano” revealed himself to daughter Kristen was such a great sequence. The anger in Stacy Haiduk’s Kristen was expected, but as time passed, Stefano’s

silver tongue convinced her. The play of emotions on Kristen’s face was amazing, from anger to disbelief to acceptance and elation. Haiduk is incredible as Kristen. I never thought I’d believe another actress as Kristen (or Susan), but she’s made the role her own. Her pain and anguish at losing her and Brady’s child is heartbreaking. Her scenes with Sal Stowers’s Lani are a hoot and I love their unlikely friendship. Leslie B., via email

MISSING THE ACTION I’m so happy Stephen Nichols has come back to DAYS, even if he has to play Stefano. Switching back and forth must be a real challenge, but he is up to it. I need to get something off my chest now, though. The time jump has this old lady very confused most of the
