a tragic Christmas accident leaves Rita injured and tormented as she s forced to face her mortality and her place in her loved ones’ lives... Granny Tanner! POOR CORONaTION STREET WeeKnigHtS 7.20Pm on UKTV

Octogenarian Rita Tanner is a legend on the cobbles as the face of The Kabin newsagency, but lately she’s discovered being universally adored can have drawbacks! People can just take it for granted that her cheerful, no-nonsense disposition will always be there for them.

At Christmas, Rita (Barbara Knox) felt more alone than ever. Her loved ones were busy with their own plans and, when a visit to old friend Mavis fell through, she faced a quiet Christmas Day at home alone. Her stepdaughter Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) did her best to reach out to her but when she accidentally patronised her, an overreacting Rita accused her of treating her like a charity case. Oh dear!

Those bridges temporarily burned, Rita faced up to a lonely yuletide, putting on a brave face and decorating her tree. Unfortunately, it toppled over and sent Rita crashing to the oor, crushed under its weight! Unable to get or call for help, Rita was left in dire straits for hours – before she was nally found and rushed to hospital.

Luckily, Rita was alive, although bruised and battered, and while everyone who loves her nally gives her all the attention she’s been craving, she lurches dangerously close to mental despair. The awful accident gives Rita pause for thought as she realises she could’ve perished before she was found. Sinking into misery, she begins to believe she’s become a burden on those around her, something she’s dreaded happening for many years now. Thinking she’s been taken for granted for a long time, she wonders if she still has any value to her family, friends and the broader community, too.

Desperate to make changes in her life for the better, an emboldened Rita embarks on making decisions that send seismic shockwaves through Weather eld as she hunts for a place to call home...
