Cynthia Erivo is up for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in Harriet.

As we all watch the British royal family, completely gobsmacked by their continuing controversies and the mess of Megxit unfolding (you can read all about them on pages 4-11), awards season, which is usually the talk of the town, has almost taken a back seat. But noise of the Oscar nominations has begun causing a stir of its own with sensational snubs and Aussie glory. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite has made a return after actress Cynthia Erivo was the only non-white nominee in the acting categories. She is up for Best Actress in a Leading Role for playing the title role in Harriet, a film about Harriet Tubman, a slave who famously became an abolitionist. Jennifer Lopez who starred in Hustlers, Awkwafina who won a Golden Globe for her work in The Farewell and Eddie Murphy who was Globes nominated for Dolemite is My Name all missed out on nods. There was also furore over no women receiving nominations in the Best Director

category – Greta Gerwig missed out as director of Little Women, meaning her nomination for Lady Bird in 2018 was the only one for a female director in the last 10 years. Shockingly, there have only been five women nominated as Best Director in the awards’ 92-year history with only one winner: Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010. Gerwig was however nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Little Women and the film is nominated for Best Picture. Our very own Margot Robbie has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Bombshell, and Scarlett Johansson joins an elite list as only the 9th star to receive nods in both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit respectively. Cate Blanchett last achieved this feat in 2007. The Academy Awards will air in Australia on Monday, February 10 at 12noon. – TEAM WHO

The Queen’s statement indicates there is still much work to do on the ‘divorce deal’ in terms of taxation, security costs, and what, if any, royal duties they will still perform. The monarch will insist they don’t cash in or cheapen the monarchy.

interview with them,” her representative told The Sun. The signs that the couple were going to take ‘the nuclear option’ were there. Meghan even alluded to it in her infamous interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby during their trip to South Africa in October last year. “It’s not enough just to survive something, right? That’s not the point of life. You’ve got to thrive,” she said. “I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip. I tried, I really tried. But I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.” Speaking last week, Bradby said “there have been a lot of fallouts” since Meghan came into the picture. “A lot of harsh things were said around the time of the wedding. And it’s gone a bit too far. Certainly, the rest of the family find Harry and Meghan very difficult and, from Harry and Meghan’s point of view, they’re just being driven out as they see it. It’s sad. My impression is they’re pretty philosophical about it. [It’s] ‘We are making a break for independence and freedom here. You wanted a slimmed-down monarchy. There’s no place for us in it. We need to learn to live on our own. We want to get on and do that’.” He added ominously that if they did do a no-holds-barred interview, “I don’t think it would be pretty. This is a new war of the Windsors. It’s not over yet”. Meghan’s happiness does indeed seem to be a key factor in their efforts to “carve out a progressive new role within this institution”, as the couple’s statement read. “She is the one who most wants to be back living in Canada and California, where she feels happy, and to bring their son up away from the restrictive and intrusive politics of Buckingham Palace,” a source previously close to Harry told the New York Post. As for their working life, the couple could take up paid positions, but it seems more likely they’ll start their own empire, having already filed paperwork to trademark Sussex Royal for more than 100 items including magazines, calendars, posters, greeting cards, pyjamas, hoodies, gloves and socks. “The possibilities right now are endless for them,” Fox Business Network’s Trish Regan tells WHO, noting they have the opportunity to make “millions and maybe hundreds of millions of dollars”. Additionally, Regan says, a book deal or a talk show would be lucrative. The first details about what the media have dubbed ‘Megxit’ are expected to emerge in the next few days. Who l7

evolving. “They are being prepared every day,” says royal author Ingrid Seward. “There was no school for princesses when Princess Di was around, and there’s no school today for monarchs. They learn by experience.” As talk resurfaces of the Queen stepping aside in favour of Charles, 71, the couple are attending more events on her behalf, and are at the heart of the inner circle. William had a big say on the Queen’s decision to strip Andrew of his royal duties. “He is one of the decision makers in the family,” says another well-placed source. “He’s a thinker.” In many ways, William was given a stronger foundation than his father. Charles grew up distant from his mother, and found himself in an unhappy marriage to Diana by the time he was William’s age. By contrast, even in the midst of his parents’ split, William had a nurturing childhood, and is treated like a much-loved son by Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton. “He is better set and better grounded than any predecessor one can remember,” says royal historian Robert Lacey. He also has a strong partner, whose unwavering poise and calm balances her husband’s more intense side. He is known to be devastated that his relationship with Harry has broken down. Reports have surfaced that William advised his brother against marrying Meghan, something Harry still resents. As the feud bubbled away, it was Kate who went into overdrive to support her husband. “She is the rock he can always rely on,” a friend told WHO this week. “They look after each other,

but in different ways. Some might say it’s an old-fashioned marriage, but it works.” Are they equals in the marriage? “Yes and no – I think in a very traditional, British kind of way, yes,” says the friend. “They have different roles but come together as a team.” That teamwork was on display on the couple’s triumphant tour of Pakistan last year. “They’re a great double act,” the friend adds. “People make much of William, but Kate is there too, asking questions of presidents and entertaining their wives.” The British Foreign Office, which decides where royals travel, sees the couple as a massive asset. At least two major overseas tours are already in the works for this year. The couple have also adopted a divide-and-conquer strategy, — a friend with Kate’s blossoming confidence allowing her to go her own way – as was the case on December 3, when she attended a NATO reception at Buckingham Palace while William completed a solo tour of Kuwait and Oman. “Kate is in her element right now,” says the friend. “She knows the importance of the institution and her responsibilities within it and has more confidence than ever to gradually modernise it from within.” As they near 40, both are keenly aware of how much closer they are getting to the throne. “The monarchy is approaching a very challenging period of change,” says Lacey. “Charles is going to have his work cut out coping with the transitions. It’s good to have that reassurance in the new generation that there is someone stepping up to the plate.”•

PITT’S TRIBUTE TO HIS MOVIE STAR MENTOR RAD PITT HAS SEEMED happy and healthy while racking up awards and an Oscar nomination for his performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, and now he’s revealed who is responsible. Accepting his best supporting actor award from the National Board of Review on January 8, he began his speech with a shout-out to the presenter, Bradley Cooper. “Bradley just put his daughter to bed and rushed over here to do this,” Pitt, 56, said of Cooper’s daughter Lea De Seine, 2. “He’s a sweetheart. I got sober because of this guy, and every day has been happier ever since.” Pitt spent 18 months in Alcoholics Anonymous after Angelina Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 and has since been open about his decision to get sober. “I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem,” he told GQ in 2017. “And truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good.” Last year, he told The New York Times about how AA meetings had helped him through. “I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” said the father-of-six. “You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgement, and therefore little judgement of yourself.” Cooper, 45, has kept his journey relatively private, but in 2015 he opened up about how his “beautiful” decision to stop drinking in his early twenties changed his life. “I would never be sitting here with you, no way, no chance,” he told interviewer Barbara Walters. “Because I wouldn’t have been able to have access to myself or other people or even take in other people if I hadn’t changed my life, no way.”

The 45-year-old was holidaying with girlfriend Camila Morrone, 22, on a rented boat near St Barts when they received a mayday call and DiCaprio gave the order to rush to the man’s aid. “Leo was having a day out with Camila and some friends when they joined the

The captain of the boat the man had been sailing on put his chances of survival at “one in a billion – like winning the lottery twice.“ After the dehydrated man was given water, he declared: “I should have died”, as the Oscar-winner looked on.

SHARING LESSONS

AMY SCHUMER HAS BEEN HONEST AND AT TIMES hilarious about every part of becoming a mother – from sharing videos of herself vomiting while pregnant to revealing details of son Gene’s “really scary” C-section birth in May. On January 9, she revealed she’s not done yet, opening up about her bid for a second baby. “I’m a week into IVF and feeling really rundown and emotional,” she posted with a picture of her bruised and swollen abdomen. “If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me, please do.” She added that she and husband Chris Fischer hadn’t yet planned their next step. “We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling,” she explained. A month earlier, Schumer, 38, shared details of Gene’s birth on Dr Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast. “I was throwing up through the whole first hour. It’s supposed to take about an hour and a half or something but mine took over three because of my endometriosis.” Schumer had also suffered such debilitating hyperemesis gravidarum that she was often bedridden. And yet, she says, it’s all worth it. “I didn’t know I could love someone that much, no offence to my husband,” she said. “I think were both shocked by the level of love that’s possible.”

‘I HAD TO PUT SOMETHING ON PAPER’ Actor tells WHO the story behind his bushfire poem

WHEN FORMER NEIGHBOURS STAR BEN Lawson’s voice comes down the line from Vancouver, Canada, it’s clear he’s emotional. Speaking from the set of upcoming Netflix show Firefly Lane, the proud Aussie is choking back tears as he reveals what led him to pen the heartfelt bushfire poem, which this week went viral. “I was reading about everything that was happening and had feelings of anger, sadness and also pride. I’d just spend days on my couch choked up and I just felt …” Breaking down in tears, the 39-year-old – who plays Lachlan Murdoch in Oscarnominated film Bombshell – pauses for a moment to collect his thoughts. He says his poem, ‘To my country, from an expat’, is a knot sitting in his gut. “I just had to put something on paper,” he says. “I was writing it in between takes, running into the green room to pour the words out. It was a weird couple of days.” The poem includes the lines: “I watch as ordinary Aussies rise to the occasion, feeding precious animals half-dead from dehydration. “The sending in their clothes and food to those who’ve lost it all, the kids are even raising cash with cupcakes in a stall. And suddenly I

get the pang of something deep inside, the one that starts down in my gut and rises like a tide. “The same one that runs through me putting fire in my veins, now glows deep within and so much brighter than those flames. “I know I’m far away from her, right now when she is ailing. I know I’ve never been so proud, to call myself Australian.” Lawson recorded himself reading his poem on Instagram and within hours it was being shared worldwide and has been viewed over 180,000 times. “The response has been unlike anything I could have expected,” he says. “People have contacted me – Australians and non-Australians, expats, people who are living right in the middle of the fires. Someone said they watched it with a couple of fireys and they were moved to tears.” He says he’s asked daily about the crisis. “Someone will hear my accent in the grocery store and say, ‘How’s everything going at home?’ And what do you say? If I get into it, I’m just going to be here crying. “‘It’s bad, it’s really bad’. A few people have said that they’re going to forward my poem to anyone who asks about the bushfires. That’s very touching for me.”

Golden Globe-winning ‘Rocketman’ star Taron Egerton talks to WHO about his surprise at being catapulted onto Hollywood’s A-list hen Welsh actor Taron Egerton was auditioning to play Elton John in last year’s hit biopic Rocketman, there was just one man hn himself. “I mean, if Elton’s not into it, it’s not happening,” says the fast-rising leading man, who first earned rave reviews in 2014’s spy thriller Kingsman: The Secret Service, just two years after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. “We immediately got on well,” he says of John. “But he hadn’t heard me sing, so we went to Abbey Road Studios to record a couple of songs. It was off to the races from there.” Now it’s off to the awards races. Egerton, 30, was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, and last week won a Golden Globe. Raised in a small seaside town in Wales with his three siblings by his single mother, a social worker (his parents divorced when he was young), he still can’t believe the way life has turned out. “It feels like something that happens to other people,” he says. “It’s very

surreal. But I’m very, very pleased to be part of those [awards] conversations.” He feels he was meant to play the ‘Candle in the Wind’ singer. “While I don’t look particularly like him, I have a very instinctive sense of who I thought he was. I understood the extremes of who he is. I understood his ability to be tempestuous. I could see quite clearly beyond what people have said about him, which is that he’s a diva. He’s actually quite shy in some ways. It’s a weird kind of duality. He can be incredibly gregarious and confident, but in the same instance can seem very vulnerable and shy.” Egerton, who starred in 2018’s Robin Hood, says he enjoyed pretending to be a rock star, but wouldn’t want to be one himself. “I love to sing, but I don’t think I’ll be recording an album anytime soon. I’ve sung onstage with Elton a couple of times, and I went out and did a song for Hugh Jackman on his tour in front of 20,000 people, but that’s probably as near to it as I’ll get. It’s a great thrill and exhilarating, though. “The music is a huge part of what I loved about the role. I got a copy of Elton John’s Greatest Hits in 2002 for Christmas, so his

music has always been there. I’ve always been passionate about him as an artist.” When he’s not acting, he likes to spend time chilling in his campervan. “My life hasn’t changed much [since Rocketman]. I just spent the weekend at my mum’s house, where she made beef stew. “My girlfriend [assistant director Emily Thomas] and I spend quite a lot of time in my RV camper. When I’m not filming, I don’t really have a life. Well, I don’t have an extraordinary life. But I do share my success with my friends and family. I have incredible people in my life. Without them, I highly doubt I would have made anything of myself!”

Rumours were already circulating that the couple had used a surrogate, after eagle-eyed fans spotted the Charlie’s Angels star with no apparent baby bump in November. If that’s the case, they are just the latest in a string of famous faces to engage one, joining the likes of Nicole Kidman, Kim Kardashian West, Tyra Banks, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lucy Liu, Elizabeth Banks, Elton John and Jimmy Fallon. But the laws on surrogacy – an arrangement where a woman agrees to carry a child for another person or couple who will became that child’s parent/s after birth –are complicated and often confusing. They can be different from country to country and even between states, and legislation often changes unexpectedly. Australia takes a tough stand over fears that vulnerable women may be exploited, and it’s therefore illegal to pay the surrogate, except to take care of any expenses she incurs. It means a childless couple have to find someone, usually a stranger, prepared to go through a pregnancy for nothing, a so-called ‘altruistic surrogate’. ndrea Walter, Justine Watson and Kim Blieschke should never even have met. They live in different states, are of different ages and have very different interests. But these brave women are connected by one tragic commonality. They have all had their lives destroyed by a 10-minute medical procedure which was promised to be an easy fix. Mesh implants were hailed as the perfect way to treat an array of pelvic floor disorders such as incontinence, hernias and prolapsed organs – less invasive than most surgeries, quick to insert and with seemingly no side effects. But they have had devastating impacts for hundreds of women across Australia, leading to chronic, unremitting pain, disfigurement, inability to have sex, debilitating depression and even suicide. For years, sufferers were fobbed off and lied to about what they were experiencing until finally in 2017, the government stepped in and introduced a partial ban – 27 years

after the mesh had been introduced to the country. A class action was launched soon afterwards on behalf of 700 Australians. At the forefront of the campaign to bring justice to the blighted lives were Watson, Walter and Blieschke – united in their pain – who wanted to make sure the company behind the mesh, Johnson & Johnson, was held accountable. WHO sits down with them to hear how the mesh has left them physically and mentally maimed.

Kim Blieschke’s doctor first persuaded her to have the mesh after she had some common complications after childbirth. “I had some big babies,” she smiles. “Because it’s about vaginas, it’s very private and no-one wants to speak about it. A lot of women suffer in silence.” But the procedure left her worse than before. She describes her life now as Russian roulette. “I could be in a shopping centre and my whole bladder would just release. I can only wear dark colours now,” she says. “I have to

two other women nod in agreement as she talks. They were also told their cases were unique, even though thousands across the world were in exactly the same predicament. As their pain worsened, the women sought answers and eventually uncovered the horrifying fact that there was no solution to the pain because the blood vessels and tissues intertwine around the tiny strands of the mesh so deeply that removing it would cause life-threatening damage.

“Because doctors couldn’t take it out, they tried trimming it, but it just recoils and embeds itself further into the vaginal wall,” Andrea Walter says. After starting the Facebook group Mesh Injured Australia (MIA), the trio were contacted by hundreds of frantic women, all with their own terrifying stories. MIA Inc (meshinjuredaustralia.org.au) was soon formed to help give advice and counselling as well as campaigning for action against the manufacturer. In one of the biggest health class actions in Australian history, the Federal Court heard that Johnson & Johnson had not adequately tested the mesh and “played down” the risks. In November, the judge ruled against the pharmaceutical giant, stating: “All the devices carried risks of complications … against which no adequate warnings were given.” The three women were delighted with the victory, but Blieschke is furious that the government still hasn’t introduced a full ban. “The partial ban was to stop the pelvic organ prolapse mesh being inserted through the vagina, but they can still insert it abdominally,” she argues. “It’s not a ban at all!” The case further enraged victims when an email exchange between doctors was uncovered, claiming anal intercourse would be a solution to their ruined sex lives. “We are being gang-raped,” Watson rages. “Something has been put in our vaginas involuntarily and all these people watched!” Watson is also staggered that there has been no progress since the judgement. “There were 13 recommendations, but nothing has been done. They mean diddly squat if they’re not met,” she says. “The court said it was not fit for purpose, yet there are crickets – utter silence! These are women, wives and mothers, and now men are having mesh implanted. We still don’t know how many people are out there suffering. The court case was validation, but these women now need help, and we are still not looking after the women who have been injured.” Globally, mesh has been linked to numerous deaths from infection, and women who feel they cannot go on living in such intense pain. In 2015, an Australian sufferer took her own life after her doctor told her nothing could be done to ease her suffering. Over 100,000 Americans have so far had the implant, and thousands more in the UK. Exhausted, Watson says: “People are dying all the time from this. It’s not good enough.”

Kim Blieschke says: “Australia is not a Third World country. How is this still happening?”

In 1996, Clueless was turned into a teen TV series, this time starring Rachel Blanchard as Cher. Now, there are plans to reboot the series, which will reportedly centre on Dionne’s attempts to look for Cher, who has gone missing.

hen Clueless first hit the silver screen in 1995, the classic teen movie instantly became a box-office sensation thanks to its quotable one-liners, trendy slang and undeniable style. Loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, the movie followed the daily highs and lows of shopaholic and Beverly Hills teenager, Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), on her road to self-discovery. The film struck a chord with Gen X and Gen Y audiences thanks to its mash-up of glam and grunge, and launched the careers of its principal cast while catapulting minimalist-preppy style to the forefront of the fashion world and breathing new life into the high-school film genre. From the first moment Cher walked the halls of Bronson Alcott High in her matching yellow plaid jacket and skirt, labels suddenly started stocking over-the-knee socks and tartan ensembles, while high-end designers such as Alaïa and Calvin Klein became household names.“We had no idea at the time how people would respond to the film, but we all enjoyed the process of working together and I especially loved the creative outlet,” says Clueless assistant costume designer, Leesa Evans.

As her first job on a Hollywood film, the movie provided Evans with the chance to leave her mark. “I was given a huge opportunity to focus on the sourcing and design of all the girls’ looks,” she tells WHO.“The fashion felt like another character whom everyone adored and there was a huge amount of support from the cast, producers and director for everything we were doing and creating,” she adds. While each costume was a statement piece on its own, Evans and her colleagues did their best to ensure the actors were wearing outfits that still allowed their characters to shine through. “The cast loved unveiling all of the new looks on set each day,” Evans explains. “There were a ton of laughs at some of the more outrageous and silly hats and matching themed outfits.” Evans was also tasked with sourcing pieces and making whatever she couldn’t find.“(Director) Amy Heckerling really had a clear vision of the fashion from the beginning and was a huge part of the inspiration for the costumes,” she explains. “We really had carte blanche to try to do our very best work.” Assistant costume ■ By Alana Wulff

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ALICIA SILVERSTONE

CHER

Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2015, Silverstone reminisced about her audition for the part of Cher. “I loved how seriously she took everything. That’s essentially how I played it … I felt like that was [who] Cher was.” Since Clueless, Silverstone has starred in series and films, published two books and become an activist in the sustainability and health sectors.

PAUL RUDD

JOSH

While Rudd was perfectly cast as the slightly older and wiser Josh, his role in Clueless almost didn’t come to pass. “When I auditioned for it, I had also asked to read for other parts [including Christian and Murray],” Rudd told Vanity Fair. Rudd has gone on to find epic success in a range of films including Role Model, I Love You, Man, Knocked Up, This Is 40 and Ant-Man.

STACEY DASH

DIONNE

Playing the role of Dionne, Cher’s feisty best friend, Dash saw her off-screen life become just as dramatic as her on-screen persona. Not only did the Republican candidate attempt (but ultimately give up) a bid to run for office in 2018, Dash was also arrested in September 2019 for domestic violence after an incident at her home in Florida. The charges were later dropped.

DONALD FAISON

MURRAY

After capturing Dionne’s heart in Clueless, Faison became a television regular as Dr Christopher Turk on the longrunning series, Scrubs. During this time, Faison fell in love with Jessica Simpson’s best friend and former assistant, CaCee Cobb. The two were married in 2012 and have two children, Rocco and Wilder.

After Clueless, Murphy had Hollywood in the palm of her hand and went on to star in an array of popular films including Drop Dead Gorgeous, Girl, Interrupted, Just Married and 8 Mile. In 2009, at the age of 32, Murphy passed away in her Hollywood home as a result of anaemia, pneumonia and drug intoxication from over-thecounter prescription medication.

Michelle Knight was only 21 when she became the first of his victims.

In one of the worst abduction and rape cases the world has ever seen, they were kidnapped between 2002 and 2004, and starved, tortured and raped for years. Castro admitted 937 cases of kidnapping and rape and was sentenced to life plus 1000 years. Now, in a new interview with American ABC’s 20/20 program, his survivors have opened up in detail about life in captivity in Castro’s 130-square-metre home in Tremont, Ohio. From being chained up in darkness, sleeping on dirty mattresses, using buckets as toilets, showering once a week and being rationed to having just one meal a day. Castro, then 42, was working as a primary school bus driver in August 2002 when he preyed on his first target, 21-year-old Knight. She had already had a tough life of sexual abuse and living on the streets and was on her way to pick up her 2-year-old son, Joey, from foster care when she got lost. She bumped into Castro and trusted him as he was the father of one of her friends. That moment of trust changed her life forever. Castro lured her to his

home, then his basement, where he tied an extension cord around her legs, arms and neck, forced a sock into her mouth and began raping her multiples times a day. “He said, ‘You’re not gonna leave for a long time.’ And then he starts undressing himself,” Knight, who now goes by the name of Lily Rose Lee, told 20/20. “I dropped to the floor begging him to let me go. Begging him, saying, ‘I need to get to my son. This can’t happen’.” In 2014, Knight wrote her memoir revealing horrific abuse such as the time Castro broke her jaw with a barbell, leaving her with permanent nerve damage, and starved and punched her until she miscarried a total of five times over the years. “I felt like he hated me the most, because I was the one that stood my ground,” says Knight, who now cannot carry children. In April 2003, Knight had been secretly locked up in Castro’s basement for nine months, when he chose his next victim. On m tthe eve of her 17th birthday, Amanda Berry was walking home from her job at Burger w King when Castro, the father of her classmate K Arlene, offered her a lift. A Just like he had with Knight, the predator iinstead took the teenager to his home, where he guided her to “a big closet” and raped her. h “There was a little, like, a little room off of the bigger bedroom, kind of a big closet,” o Berry, now 33, says. “He took me in there, B aand he told me to pull down my pants. And

from there I knew, like, this was not going to be good.” She continued: “I just started screaming and crying … ‘Somebody please help me’, you know? And nobody, nobody came. I was so scared that I was going to die. I didn’t think that I was going to ever make it home.” Just a week after she was taken, Castro called Berry’s family from her mobile phone, taunting them and claiming, “She wants to be with me.” The FBI managed to track down the phone’s location to within a 30- to 40-block radius, but were unable to pinpoint her exact whereabouts. Almost a year later, the last – and youngest – of Castro’s victims was abducted. Just 14 years old, Gina DeJesus was another school friend of Castro’s daughter, Arlene, and the pair were walking home from school together until they went their separate ways – and DeJesus wound up a prisoner in her friend’s family home. DeJesus, now 29, recalls how Castro asked her to help look for Arlene but then drove her to his home instead. “He starts to, like, touch me and stuff, and then I’m like, ‘What are you doing? You could go to jail,’” she told 20/20. “He just switches up like, ‘Well, OK, we’re going to, you’re going to go home now,’ he said, ‘but you can’t go through the same door you came in.’” Next thing she knew, she was in the basement and being chained up.

MONSTER’S DAY IN COURT

Months after his arrest, Castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts of rape, murder and kidnapping in exchange for avoiding the death penalty, but showed no remorse. He played the victim and insisted he was really a “very emotional” person and that the women were not only lying about the abuse they suffered, but there was “harmony” in the “happy household”. “I’m not a monster. I’m just sick. I have an addiction, just like an alcoholic has an addiction,” Castro told the court. “God as my witness, I never beat these women like they’re trying to say that I did. I never tortured them.” Knight was the only survivor who faced her captor in court, telling him she had “cried every night” of her “11 years in hell”. His sentence was life plus 1000 years.

The r t’s no secret that women are having a moment in Hollywood after years of fighting to be heard. They are battling to be paid the same as their male counterparts and want more meaty roles instead of the ‘pretty girlfriend’. And with growing support and encouragement for women to pursue their creative dreams, more and more female stars are turning to producing and directing in a bid to pave the way for future women in the still male-dominated industry. “We gotta have these models for the next generation, so someone can grow up and say, ‘I want to be the next Liz Banks’, and not say, ‘I want to be Steven Spielberg’,” producer and director Elizabeth Banks insists.

ECTION JENNIFER LOPEZ

The triple-threat star has always been one of the hardest working people in the business, but she’s taken it to the next level with her recent list of producing credits, including TV show World of Dance and films Second Act and Hustlers. “I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers,” Lopez told GQ about the film, which is based on a true story. “I did it for free and produced it. Like Jenny from the Block, I do what I love.” That passion has certainly paid off, with some critics predicting the 50-year-old could earn her first Oscar nod for her role as hustling stripper Ramona. But it’s pushing the envelope on gender equality in Hollywood that really drives Lopez. “Having all women on the set – in front of the camera, behind the camera, behind the scenes with producers – it’s definitely a different experience. It’s not something that happens every day in Hollywood,” she says.

OLIVIA WILDE

“Refreshing”, “witty”, “funny”, “electric” … are just some of the words of praise teen comedy Booksmart received on its release. A lot of that approval was heaped on its first-time director, one-time The OC actress Wilde, who earned a Director To Watch accolade at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for the film. Wilde, 35, says it was a “slow burn” to make the move from acting. “What I really enjoyed about making movies was the process of collaborating,” she says. “A director does that more than anything on set, interacting with every single department … For actors, the work process is uneven. It’s stop and start. I found that exhausting and isolating. With directing, I was plugged in 100 per cent of the time.” Wilde’s next step is deciding whether to star in a movie she’ll direct. “Before this, I never would have said I’d be OK acting in my own movies, but now I think I could do it,” she says.

Although she chose not to star in it, the 27-year-old singer was a huge driving force as executive producer for her “passion project”, 13 Reasons Why, which hit Netflix in 2017.

It’s no small feat to be one of the world’s most in-demand leading ladies and a producing powerhouse, but Witherspoon has managed to achieve that status through years of hard graft. Her company, Hello Sunshine, has produced hits like Gone Girl, but when her show, Big Little Lies, won eight Emmys in 2017, people started paying attention. “It opened a lot of doors for me,” Witherspoon says. “People wanted to be in business with me as a producer in the TV space. My mission was to create television for other women, for other female storytellers that are actresses, other directors and other writers. I think it just clicked in people’s minds.” She’s now producing and starring in Morning Wars with Jennifer Aniston, and getting set to revisit bubbly lawyer Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3.

Theron’s production company, Denver + Delilah Films, has been running successfully since the early 2000s, bringing out major films like Monster and more recently, Atomic Blonde and the buzzed-about Bombshell – a real-life story about sexual harassment struggles that Theron, 44, felt particularly passionate about. As producer, it was on her to find $32 million in funding when the initial backer dropped out. Meanwhile, co-star Robbie and her husband, Tom Ackerley, founded LuckyChap Entertainment in 2014, and were responsible for her Oscar-nominated hit I, Tonya. “When I was trying to make my name as an actress, creative roles for women were limited,” Robbie, 29, told Harper’s Bazaar. “I didn’t want to pick up another script where I was the wife or the girlfriend.” And while 52-year-old Kidman is still deep in the acting scene, she’s also inspired to add to her production projects, which include co-producing Big Little Lies with Witherspoon. ■

here are few friends in Hollywood who seem to have as much fun working together as Steve Martin, 74, and Martin Short, 69. In 2018 they decided to blend their individual comedy and musical tours into a joint show now called The Funniest Show in Town at the Moment that they’ve taken on the road. The performance is a mix of anecdotes from 35 years of friendship, funny songs and just riffing off each other. “We adore the show because of the reaction that we get from it, which is just full of laughs,” says Short, who lives in Los Angeles and has three grown children. (His wife, Nancy Dolman, died of ovarian cancer in 2010.) There are also few friends who admire each other as much as they do, both as people and as actors. “I loved Marty in LA Story. Oh, sorry, you weren’t in that,” says Martin, who also lives in LA with his wife, Anne Stringfield, 47, and their 7-year-old daughter. “And I loved you in The Jerk. The new inquest holds the possibility the case might finally be solved. At 11.30am on the morning she was killed, Maria telephoned her ex-husband, John James. She told him: “There’s someone here”, and John then overheard a muffled argument in the background. He quickly drove to her home behind the bookshop she

At the time, he investigated her ex-husband, another man she had been romantically involved with, a former customer, and a neighbour named Mario, who she’d argued with that morning. John was quickly ruled out, but then the focus fell on Mario, who was found to be in possession of the same type of twine that had bound Maria’s hands. Additionally, on the day after the attack, he had taken bloodstained pants to a dry cleaner. Despite the leads, the case went cold until 2000, when Iddles thought he had a breakthrough thanks to burgeoning DNA technology. MANDY MOORE

Q. What’s the easiest way to achieve a smoky eye? Try Mandy Moore’s fully lined black eye. “It’s easier than blending eye shadow colours, especially when you’re short on time,” says her makeup artist Jenn Streicher. First use a primer to help lock in your liner. Next draw a thick line around the eye, from the inner to outer corners, then in the waterline. Using an angled brush, set the liner with black eye shadow.

Q. Is it really bad if I sleep in my makeup for just one night? While it won’t cause major damage (we know, everyone is guilty!), we wouldn’t recommend making it a habit since it can clog pores and prevent the skin from properly regenerating. For those times when you’re too tired to stand at the sink, stash some wipes by your bedside table to remove makeup without the need for water. These ones are infused with essential oils, are kind on skin and smell divine. Whol55

Almost 2.5 million Australians now have diets where almost all the food is vegetarian, according to Roy Morgan.

BEYOND MEAT

INSIDE AUSTRALIA’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH VEGANISM AND MEAT ALTERNATIVES

Y

next to ground beef in the meat aisle. The latest crop of burgers, like Harvest Gourmet’s Incredible Burger are imitating meat so well, they even ‘bleed’. “It’s great because it maintains a similar texture to a meat patty but is made with soy and wheat protein – it also contains carrot, beetroot and red capsicum natural plant extracts – which help give the patty its vibrant raw meat appearance, just like a beef burger,” says Hurlston. If you like your vegie burgers to taste as far away from meat as possible there are also lots of good options. “You can find anything from traditional vegetarian products like falafels and vegie patties right through to the new generation of products that actually transform during the cooking process,” says Czepl. Sophie’s Kitchen is an emerging brand that makes plant-based seafood products such as Crabless Cakes using konjac, an ancient superfood that’s a staple across South-East Asia – and does not involve depleting ocean fish from the ocean. “We believe the better plant-based foods taste, the more people will choose to prepare healthy meals for themselves, their family and their community,” says Adrian Gastevski, director of Future Farm Co, the company that brought Sophie’s Kitchen to Australia. Some plant-based burgers have come under fire for being made using genetically modified ingredients (there is debate about whether GMOs are good for our health and the planet), but many of them don’t. Check the label as it’s likely that a brand will use its GMO-free status as a selling point. While you’re there reading labels, check the ingredients’ list – a long list of strange sounding ingredients is probably not as healthy as one that contains real vegetables, and remember that some fake-meat burgers contain as much saturated fat as a real one, making them a sometimes food.

HOW TO MAKE A VEGIE BURGER TASTE GOOD D Tips from Jimmy Hurlston, co-owner of burger institute Easey’s in Melbourne

1 Always use top quality and fresh ingredients.

2 Have a good quality bun. I prefer potato rolls. (Google recipes or sub with brioche buns).

3 Experiment with sauces and other additions.

4 Always keep in mind d: texture, temperature e and flavour.

ou’ve no doubt seen them in the news – burgers that look and taste like meat, but are plant-based, are big news. Going under various names such as the Incredible Burger, Impossible Burger and Beyond Burger, even Hungry Jack’s is on board with its new vegan cheeseburger. The CSIRO projects the emerging plant-based ‘meat’ industry will be worth more than $6 billion by 2030, and we seemingly can’t get enough. Meat alternatives in the form of everything from burgers to fake smoked salmon are becoming widely available in grocery stores, fast food stores and restaurants alike. “The number of Australians reducing their meat intake is continuously growing, but I think the motivations for why people are eating alternative proteins differs [from other countries]. In Australia, health is the primary driver. Environmental and animal welfare concerns are drivers, but seen as secondary,” says Kristina Czepl, Head of Foods Nestlé Oceania. Data from search engine Google revealed that in early 2019, Aussies searched for the word ‘vegan’ more than anywhere else in the world, and certainly our love affair with the vegan lifestyle is one reason for the spike in this food category, but even die-hard meat fans are curious. “Consumers are far more conscious of what they’re putting into their body and are generally more aware of the impacts of farming animal proteins. Customers also want to reduce meat and/or add in a bit of variety,” says Jimmy Hurlston, co-owner of popular burger joint Easey’s in Melbourne, where meat-free options are on the menu. “People are asking questions: what do they taste like, what are they made of, are they healthy?” he says. Plant-based ‘meats’ have come a long way in the last two years and have moved from being questionable ‘vegie patties’ to sitting

el Pritchard, 42, thought she ate reasonably well, but her portions were always out of control. “I’d eat the same size dinner as my husband every night plus my 4-year-old’s leftovers,” she says. Tired of feeling bloated with no energy, Mel decided to take on an 8-week Keto-Fit challenge, hoping to lose weight and find foods that worked better for her body. Keto is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet that tricks the body into a fat-burning process called ketosis. Using a structured meal plan with the help of Keto-Fit products appealed to Mel to take the stress out of having to think about what to eat every day. “My weak spots were always carbrelated [bread, pasta, biscuits etc]. I would drink wine every night with my husband and I would never take leftovers from dinner for lunch the next day, so would spend unnecessary money.” The Keto-Fit challenge has now opened her eyes to new recipes and foods she didn’t typically eat but now loves. In the beginning Mel found it hard to stick to the challenge at weekends, but her fast results motivated her to stick with it. “I’ve never understood when people would say ‘the weight just dropped off’ – but now I do. I lost over 3kg in the first two weeks and people began to notice so that was a huge motivator. I also felt really good – not bloated, overly full and uncomfortable all the time, but I was satiated by what I was eating. Feeling good like that all the time is addictive!” After years of trying different eating plans, Mel is finally happy to have found one that works for her. “I’m 100 per cent happy with the results. I will stick to this way of eating, although I will reintroduce a wider variety of fruit back into my diet and some wholegrains [quinoa, brown rice, n is

It’s well rounded and fully matured in Australian red wine barrels with the result being a lighter style whisky that has the ability to work with a tonic. Enjoy!

YOUR GUIDE TO THE BIGGEST ENTERTAINMENT RELEASES EACH WEEK

Pick of the week

Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood, left, with Emma Mackey as Maeve) has a more serious storyline this season.

STREAMING

Jean (Gillian Anderson) faces personal and professional upheaval – and does so looking as fabulous as ever.

SEX EDUCATION S2

STARRING: Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey In Season 1 of this British comedy, virgin Otis (Butterfield) started dishing out sex advice to his fellow students at Moordale Secondary School – what he lacked in practical experience, he made up for by being the son of an actual sex therapist, glamorous one-night-stand fan Dr Jean Milburn (Anderson). And although that case-of-the-week premise is maintained to an extent in this second batch of eight episodes – with Otis’ ‘practice’ encountering some quite unexpected competition on campus – Sex Education dives much deeper into the main ensemble’s personalities and relationships. That involves, of course, all the sex they are – and, in some cases, aren’t – having with each other. And it is a fantastic ensemble of young actors the producers have amassed. Besides the core trio of awkward Otis, loyal best friend Eric (Gatwa) and love interest/business partner Maeve (Mackey), the series has a deep well of supporting characters to draw from, so much so that you’re often left wishing we’d see even

more of bitchy mean girl Ruby (Mimi Keene) or tortured swim star Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling). For the most part, however, Sex Education does a great job of juggling its multiple characters and various inter-connected storylines, and injecting both humour and heart into its tales of teenagers actually being teenagers. That is one of the best parts of the series – that the characters feel like kids rather than adults. They might act self-assured, but, without exception, they harbour insecurities and doubts, with their uncertainties, masked by bravado, giving rise to some really compelling conflict and comedy. The adults don’t have things much more together, either. And besides Jean, who just happens to be dating the father of Otis’ girlfriend, Ola (Patricia Allison), more time this season is spent fleshing out some of Moordale’s teachers and other parents – mostly time well spent. All that and one of the most bizarre school musicals ever seen in a TV series. (On Netflix from Fri., Jan. 17)

Josh Thomas is also the creator and showrunner of Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.

THAT FEELING WHEN YOU REALLY WANT TO LOVE A SHOW BUT DON’T

have long been a fan of Josh Thomas. From his time as part of the original panel on Talkin’ ’Bout Your Generation to his work in Please Like Me to his stand-up performances, he has always impressed me as an effortlessly funny guy with a unique voice – and I’m not just talking about his accent. In a country where the straight, middle-aged, white male is the predominant perspective given air time, Thomas offered something different in two of those respects. In Please Like Me specifically, he gave twenty-somethings and gay men representation, and did so without it feeling like that’s what he was doing. In other words, the ABC comedy series didn’t hit you over the head with the issues it was tackling or the sometimes marginalised communities – also including those suffering mental health issues – it was representing. Instead, it just got on with the job of being a genuinely funny show that just happened to address those things. So when I heard Thomas was returning to TV with a new show, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay (on Stan from Fri., Jan. 17), I was looking forward to seeing it. But – and you knew there

was a ‘but’ coming, right? – based on the two episodes I have seen so far, I’m not sold on it. In Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, Thomas plays Australian entomologist Nicholas, who, while visiting his father and his two teenage half-sisters in America, learns his widowed dad is dying from a fast-acting terminal cancer and agrees to take on the role of the girls’ guardian. The elder, Matilda (Kayla Cromer), is on the autism spectrum, while Genevieve (Maeve Press) is a late developer navigating the pressures of high school cliques. It’s not that the show isn’t funny – there is a smattering of Thomas’ distinctive clever dialogue throughout. And once again, it includes characters and communities not seen all the time, and deals with them sensitively. It’s just feels more contrived than Please Like Me, like it is making a statement, underlining it and putting two exclamation marks at the end. Perhaps my expectations were too high or perhaps I just didn’t enjoy it – I’ll give it a few more episodes to work that out. But there really is nothing worse when it comes to TV shows than sitting down to watch something you had already decided was going to be your new favourite and have it dawn

on you that that’s not going to be the case. It’s like when all your friends tell you that you must watch a specific show or you read a bunch of glowing reviews and you build a series up in your mind only to have it not live up to the hype. Except in this case, the hype was all mine. •

LIST

O

n a spring morning in 2018, Robert Downey Jr is winding his way through an extras-filled marketplace set on the back lot of London’s Pinewood Studios, filming a scene for his latest movie, Dolittle (out now). In the course of the complicated shot he will chat with a gorilla-playing actor wearing a specialeffects-assisting green leotard while also conversing with a non-existent parrot that will be computer-generated onto Downey’s shoulder at a later date and voiced by Emma Thompson. For most movie stars, this sequence would be a trying experience. But after a decade playing Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Downey admits today’s labours seem positively down-toearth. “The Marvel films are literally on this other dimension,” says the actor, 54. “[Dolittle] is essentially a period comedy with a lot of heart.” Downey is, of course, playing the film’s titular character whose famous ability to communicate with animals was previously depicted in 1967’s Rex Harrison-starring Doctor Dolittle and two more recent, modern-day Eddie Murphy vehicles (1998’s Dr Dolittle and 2001’s Dr Dolittle 2, both box office hits). Downey’s version takes place in the

Robert Downey Jr, Harry Collett and a few of their feathered friends in Dolittle.

19th-century setting of Hugh Lofting’s original children’s books and finds Dolittle setting sail on an adventure with a young apprentice (Harry Collett) to find a cure for the gravely ill Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley). Along the way, he encounters Michael Sheen’s villainous character, Mudfly, and Antonio Banderas’ Pirate King Rassouli, who rules the fictional island of Monteverdi on which today’s action takes place. Needless to say, Dolittle also spends time chatting it up with a host of animals, voiced by the stellar likes of Rami Malek, Kumail Nanjiani, John Cena, Marion Cotillard and Downey’s MCU co-star Tom Holland. Like the 1967 original, which was notoriously beset with production woes, this iteration has been a bit of a real-life jungle cruise – following WHO’s set visit of the film, originally titled The Voyage of Dr Dolittle, Downey and his producer wife, Susan, saw director Stephen Gaghan’s cut and decided additional shooting was required. Gaghan, best known for directing the geopolitical thriller Syriana, is a newbie to the world of big-budget family-friendly filmmaking, and directors Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) and Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) were both recruited to help rework the project. Meanwhile, the movie’s

Tom Holland provides the voice for glasseswearing dog Jip.

release date was pushed from last April to its eventual January 16 debut. The Downeys put a positive spin on the reshoots. “We realised we just wanted more with Dolittle and the animals,” Susan Downey explains. “We brought consultants, but Gaghan was there – it was pretty much the same team.” If Dolittle proves a success, Downey says he would be more than happy to continue talking to the animals for some time to come. “There are so many ideas and thoughts and iterations that were racing through my mind from day one,” recalls the actor. “Even more now that we’re seeing [the finished result]. Once you start seeing something you like, you start thinking about how you could get it to the next level.” ■ Clark Collis

ALL SYSTEMS GO

THANKS TO THEIR ROLES IN NEW GO-KARTING FILM ‘GO!’, THESE THREE YOUNG ACTORS ARE ON THE FAST TRACK WILLIAM LODDER, 19

How similar are you to your character, Jack? He was weirdly a lot like me. Jack moves to Perth and is introduced to this world of go-karting, which he’s never done before, and I was making a movie in Perth – something I don’t have a huge amount of experience in. It definitely made it easier to connect with the character. But I’m not as cheeky as Jack – he’s such a rebellious character. How much of the racing did you get to do yourself? About 40 per cent. I wish it was all me, but no. I had an awesome stunt double – a professional who knows what he’s doing and makes Jack look good.

ANASTASIA BAMPOS, 19

Your character, Mandy, has the know-how to build Jack a go-kart. Did you love playing someone who shows girls they can do whatever boys can? I don’t have words to explain how excited I am to portray a character like this. If Go! came out when I was younger, I would have looked up to Mandy. Women can be underestimated, and having Mandy as a role model is proof things are changing. This is your first film role. How was the experience? Yeah, there were a lot of firsts for me in this movie. There were surprises and not one day was like another, and I loved that and how fast-paced it is.

DARIUS AMARFIO-JEFFERSON, 16

From left: AmarfioJefferson, Lodder and Bampos.

Your character, Colin, forms a fast friendship with newcomer Jack. How would you describe him? At the start, he’s very introverted, but with Jack and Mandy’s help, he comes out of his shell and learns how to be comfortable in his own skin. The film is as much of a development story for Colin as it is for Jack. He becomes more impulsive. He provides the comic relief. Are you a joker, too? I like to think I am. Others may beg to differ. Colin is a victim of bullying. Could you relate at all? Growing up being African-American, there was always a bit of bullying. It’s something you learn to live with, and how to stand up for your mates.

THE ALBUMS

MANIC Halsey

The first track on Halsey’s third album is titled ‘Ashley’ – the singer’s real name, with the song setting the tone for what is an intensely personal and confessional collection. As she sings about “spilling her guts” on that opener and describes herself as having “spent a long time substituting honest with sarcastic” on ‘Forever … (is a long time)’, you get the sense that this is the real deal, with the colourful haired persona stripped back. Musically, Manic is as varied as its title suggests, taking in a range of styles and feels – from the punchy rock of ‘3am’ to the minimalist ‘More’. (Out Fri., Jan 17)

AVENUE 5

STARRING: Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad After years playing a surly – but brilliant! – doctor on House, Laurie went back to his comedy roots in a hilarious recurring role on Veep. That worked out so well that the British actor has taken on the lead in the new series from Veep creator Armando Iannucci – a show that is literally millions of miles away from the political satire. Set mostly on board a space cruise ship called Avenue 5, the show of the same name follows what happens when the vessel ends up way off course. Laurie is perfectly cast as the dashing captain of the ship, which is the outer space

equivalent of an ocean liner – all-you-can-eat buffets and all – while the other characters range from Avenue 5’s eccentric billionaire owner (Gad) to the disgruntled passengers suddenly facing a much longer trip than they anticipated. Not as brilliant as Veep, the series does have moments of great comedy, but it’s mostly a clever line here or there rather than consistent laughs, and while some of the absurdity lands, there are moments that just feel a bit silly instead. (Starts Tue., Jan. 21 at 8.30pm (AEDT); Fox Showcase)

DEAR HAPPY

Gabrielle Aplin

Back in 2014, YouTube performer turned major label recording artist Gabrielle Aplin scored back-to-back Top 5 hits on the ARIA chart, but has failed to generate that same level of interest in the years since. Her third album, Dear Happy, is full to the brim with tunes that showcase both the Brit’s pretty vocals and ability to belt out a powerhouse chorus, sometimes in the same song. Maintaining her more recent shift towards synth-based production, rather than the acoustic sound with which she launched herself, the album is an easy listen that is maybe too inoffensive for its own good. (Out Fri., Jan. 17)

TROOP ZERO

STARRING: Viola Davis, Mckenna Grace

STREAMING

THE NEW POPE STARRING: Jude Law, John Malkovich Like its predecessor, The Young Pope, The New Pope is enticingly sumptuous and playfully baffling – it’s hard to know what to make of a convent of nuns who, once lights are out, slip from their cots and perform a disco dance. Pius XIII (Law) has suffered a catastrophic heart attack, reducing him to a ghost who pops up from time to time. Vatican officials angle to replace him with

Although this 1977-set family movie is a by-thenumbers tale of a group of misfits, it has plenty of Southern charm, and Oscar winners Davis and Allison Janney clearly have a ball as they face off playing rival Birdie scout troop leaders. Davis’ group are the underdogs, pulled together by the tenacious Christmas Flint (Grace), who has her heart set on winning a talent competition at the Birdie Jamboree. But can Troop Zero unite as a team and unearth whatever their talent may be? No prizes for guessing the answer, but there’s some unexpected fun to be had along the way. a sorrowful, eccentric English aristocrat (Malkovich). (He’s friends with Meghan Markle: “I’m adamant – wear the yellow Dior,” he tells her on the phone.) DIARY OF A FUTURE PRESIDENT STARRING: Tess Romero, Selenis Leyva The important word in this new comedy’s title is ‘future’, with the focus on 12-year-old Elena (Romero) as she navigates the trials of middle school. There are brief flash-forwards to grown-up Elena (played by Gina Rodriguez, who also executive produces the show), but her eventual political career is merely the framing device for a look back to

where her ambition began, as recorded in young Elena’s diary. Newcomer Romero is a capable young star and anchors the show, which in its first episode deals with broken friendships and periods in a relatable way. It’s also nice to see Orange is the New Black’s Leyva in a lighter role, as Elena’s mum. (On Disney+ from Fri., Jan. 17)

When a flight from New York to Los Angeles crashes in a Colorado field, there is only one survivor: 12-year-old Edward Adler. After weeks in hospital, he goes to live with his uncle and aunt, and begins the slow process of coming to terms with why he survived when 191 perished. Solace comes in the form of his friendship with Shay, who lives next door, and helps Edward navigate school and provides comforting reminders of the sibling he’s lost. Together, they also embark on a mission of sorts when they find sacks of letters, addressed to Edward but hidden in his uncle’s garage, from the relatives of the other passengers. Although it tugs unashamedly at the heartstrings, this book is tender, beautifully written and ultimately uplifting. (Out now)

THE Charlize Theron (left) on acting with Nicole Kidman (centre) and Margot Robbie: “Every day was pretty special.”

BOMB SQUAD CHARLIZE THERON ON THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL TRANSFORMATION REQUIRED TO PORTRAY A CONTROVERSIAL MEDIA FIGURE IN ‘BOMBSHELL’

C

harlize Theron has built her career on metamorphosis. The 44-year-old actress gained 13kg to play a serial killer in 2003’s Monster and shaved her head to play the battle-scarred Furiosa in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. But her latest shape-shift is perhaps her most uncanny yet – Theron stars as Megyn Kelly in Bombshell (out now), Jay Roach’s drama about the downfall of notorious news titan Roger Ailes (John Lithgow). With a bleached-blonde bob, pursed lips and a few well-placed prosthetics, Theron’s transformation is eerily accurate as Kelly, who in 2016 joined multiple Fox News employees to accuse Ailes of sexual harassment. But when Theron first read Charles Randolph’s script, she was reluctant to play such a polarising figure. “Everyone [in America] knows exactly who you’re talking about when you say ‘Megyn

Kelly,’ ” she explains. “It’s not like when I played Aileen Wuornos [in Monster] and people were like, ‘Oh, who is that?’” Her friend Roach, who directed HBO’s Game Change, helped sway her, and the two set out to tell a story not about Ailes but the women around him. In addition to Theron’s Kelly, Nicole Kidman stars as Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox & Friends co-host who first filed a lawsuit against Ailes alleging years of sexual harassment. Margot Robbie plays the fictional Kayla Pospisil, an amalgamation born of the actual testimonies from Ailes’ accusers. (Ailes denied all allegations before his death in 2017.) Roach acknowledges that his perspective was limited as a man telling a story about women, so he and Theron spoke to “dozens” of people close to the real-life scandal for insight. “We felt such a sense of responsibility since it’s

a story about women speaking up and being heard,” the director says. “My responsibility was to listen and to talk to as many as I could so that people could empathise [with] what they went through.” Roach notes that the Ailes scandal came more than a year before the #MeToo movement swept through Hollywood and before sexual harassment allegations brought down media juggernauts such as Harvey Weinstein, Les Moonves and Matt Lauer (each of whom denied the accusations against them). There’s also the fascination with Fox News itself, and how Ailes and his employees helped shape the United States’ conservative ideology. “These were women who would not have necessarily called themselves feminists and sometimes even were anti-politically correct,” Roach says. “And they ended up being the people that spoke up.”

The real deal: Kelly in 2016. Blonde ambition: Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly.

“All of my other issues that I have with that world, I had to put all of that aside because the story is worth telling,” adds Theron, who also serves as a producer. “It doesn’t have anything to do with how I feel about Fox News or how I feel about Republicans. That’s not what this film is about at all.” To fully transform into Kelly, Theron recruited renowned makeup artist Kazu Hiro, who won an Oscar for Darkest Hour. He’s technically retired from makeup artistry, but Mindhunter Season 2 (a show that Theron executive produces) coaxed him back to sculpt some serial killers, and Theron begged Hiro to suspend his retirement again for Bombshell. The actress also immersed herself in footage of Kelly, particularly her unscripted interviews. “She’s pretty hard, and she comes across in a certain way that feels very strong and very much like you can’t break through

any of that wall,”Theron says. “But there are moments where you watch her – especially after [the events in Bombshell] take place – where you can see some of her vulnerability.” Even with all that preparation, things didn’t always go as planned. “The prosthetics on the eyes were [especially] tricky,” Theron says with a laugh. “We were all cracking up because only one eye would blink, and it looked like I had a glass eye.” Once the prosthetics were in place, however, Theron says she simply had to approach Kelly not as a crusading hero nor a controversial villain, but as a human being. “You can’t tell a story like this if you’re not empathetic,” she says. “You don’t have to be sympathetic, but if you don’t understand or you’re not willing to for a second stand in their shoes, you can’t tell this story.” ■ Devan Coggan
