SPECIAL ROYAL REPORT :

Sussex bom THE ROYAL F WILL N BE THE W The pair’s split has torn the Windsors apart

Crisis talks: As we went to press, the Queen was convening an urgent meeting of all four royal households to try to find a “workable” future for the Sussexes. Below: The world was charmed when Harry showed off Archie wearing a Kiwimade beanie (see page 42).

hen Prince Harry said “I do” to Meghan Markle on May 19, 2018, the royal family’s future looked as sunny as it was on that historic spring day in Windsor. The fun-loving grandson of the Queen appeared to have finally found his fairytale ending with the glamorous American actress and the world couldn’t have been happier. But fast-forward 19 months and things have gone drastically wrong. Shockwaves are echoing across the globe over the couple’s astonishing decision to step aside from their current royal roles – and calls are mounting for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to be ejected from the family over their disregard for the Queen, who was blindsided by the release of their plans. The bombshell came on January 8, just a day after Harry and Meghan returned to public life following a super-secretive

i k holiday h lid d six-week da. Making the announcement on Instagram, they explained they no longer wanted to be “senior royals”, and would in the future divide their time between the UK and North America. At the same time, they launched a new website to explain their “progressive” new direction. And no-one was more shocked than the 93-year-old monarch, who reportedly received the news at the same time as the rest of the world. She’s believed to have earlier asked Harry to hold off on any announcement before further talks with Prince Charles, 71, but he sent the statement to his father just 10 minutes before going public, leaving the future king “incandescent with rage”. “Their statement was not cleared with anyone,” claims a source. “It breaks all protocol. This is a declaration of war on the family.” “The level of deceit

The controversial message from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family, and work to become financially independent,

while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the

Queen, the Commonwealth and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.

We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty the Queen, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.”

Since then, the couple have seemingly gone to war with the world. A very public rift

Despite their smiles, Meghan was clearly feeling the heat in London on January 7, the day before their big announcement.

TV host Piers Morgan “People say I’m too critical of Meghan ... but she ditched her family, ditched her dad, ditched most of her old friends, split Harry from William and has now split him from the royal family.

SPECIAL ROYAL REPORT: between Harry and opened his once-close brother Prince William, 37, with the Sussexes distancing themselves from the charitable Royal Foundation they had once headed up with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Harry, 35, launched attacks on the British press and faced criticism over his use of private jets amid his stance as an environmentalist. And in a documentary about the couple’s ofďŹ cial tour of Africa, Meghan, 38, complained that it was “a struggleâ€? becoming a new mother amid intense media scrutiny and that not many people had asked her how she was doing – a statement that drew criticism for her apparent lack of awareness of her unparalleled privilege. The renegade royals took everyone by surprise once again in November when it was announced they would not be spending Archie’s ďŹ rst Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham and would instead be celebrating with Meghan’s yoga instructor mum Doria Ragland, 63, in North America. And when Prince Philip, 98, was hospitalised for a pre-existing condition, Harry called the Queen from his luxury Canadian bolt-hole to pass on his regards but there was nothing but silence from Meghan. Her Majesty was so upset by the faux pas, she reportedly sent a letter setting out her expectations for family members. “After the Queen sent Meghan the memo expressing her hurt and upset, everyone thought the duchess would return and throw herself into her duties,â€? claims our insider. “But perhaps that letter was the straw that broke the camel’s back and made Meghan realise she no longer wants to be part of the goldďŹ sh bowl she’s been living in. “It’s no secret Meghan’s been incredibly unhappy in the UK for some time now, but no-one in the royal family thought this would happen. “She and Harry kept their plan so under wraps that not even Harry’s closest pals knew

what they were planning. Their Christmas trip to Canada was, in fact, a plot to start planning their new life.â€? Palace insiders say Harry and Meghan ďŹ rst began drawing up their plans to forge a new path 10 months ago, yet conďŹ ded in no-one. The prince allegedly raised his idea with the Queen and Charles briey before Christmas, and was told further consultation was required before anything could happen. “The Queen is deeply saddened,â€? according to our source. “Harry told her he was faced with a choice: to do what was right for his wife and son or risk losing his family altogether. “Despite her hurt and disappointment, the Queen could sympathise but she told him that splitting the family at this time was a huge blow and she was unable to give her blessing. She was deeply upset and felt blindsided – especially when she’d gone to such efforts to make Meghan feel comfortable.â€? Charles, says the insider, is furious. “He’s labelled Harry a coward and accused him of creating a deep fracture in the family, which

was now beyond repair. “And William’s so sad that he hasn’t yet spoken to Harry. This will deepen their rift even further and it feels as though they’ll eventually become estranged, which has always been his biggest fear. “William conďŹ ded in friends that he thought the whole thing was a cop-out because Harry knows full well that he and Meghan will never be able to lead the lives led by their mainstream peers.â€? Because the Sussexes’ surprise move – dubbed

“Megxit in the UK press – took the palace by surprise, a spokesman initially labelled the news “speculation before hurriedly issuing a twosentence statement saying discussions with Harry and Meghan were “at an early stage. It read, “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through. Two of those “complicated issues revolve around the couple’s royal titles and their future income.

MEGHAN’S 3-YEAR REIGN OF OCTOBER 20 2016 News breaks that Prince Harry is dating Suits star Meghan Markle. The pair met at London’s Soho House in July after being set up on a blind date by their mutual friend Misha Nonoo.

NOVEMBER 8 Harry publicly attacks the UK press over its “abuse and “harassment of his girlfriend.

WAS MEGHAN FORCED TO GIVE BACK THE RINGS? The Queen tells Harry she wants her jewels back

BBC journalist

Jonny Dymond “No other member of the royal family was consulted before Harry and Meghan issued their personal statement ... the palace is understood to be ‘disappointed’.

In their statement, Harry and Meghan said they would be “working to become ďŹ nancially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queenâ€? – and palace insiders conďŹ rm they are already independently wealthy. Together, their private fortune stands at $67 million, including the $39 million Harry inherited from his mother Princess Diana, the $14 million he inherited from the Queen Mother and Meghan’s $8 million, mostly earned from her seven-season run on the legal drama Suits.

Hours before the news of their departure broke, a glammed-up Meghan was snapped looking pensive as she rushed out of London’s National Theatre. But what was most startling about her abrupt departure was the lack of her wedding band or engagement ring on her ďŹ nger. “Word is the Queen reacted so badly to their decision to leave that she ordered Harry to give back Meghan’s wedding band,â€? says an insider.

Prince Charles also gives the pair an annual allowance of around $4 million a year from the proďŹ ts generated by his $2.3 billion Duchy of Cornwall estate, and it’s expected that regardless of his youngest son’s choices, this income will still appear in Harry’s bank account each year. The Sussexes will no longer be entitled to around $2 million a year of taxpayers’ money from the sovereign grant, but they intend to keep their taxpayerfunded Windsor home of Frogmore Cottage and their $1.2 million-ayear security detail. “They would most likely keep Frogmore Cottage because it was a gift to them by the Queen,â€? says a royal commentator. “But they would be expected to pay for their own renovations and to pay for a house in Canada.â€?

“Technically the Queen owns it. It’s made from a nugget of rare Welsh gold, and there aren’t too many people at the palace who feel Meghan is deserving of something so steeped in royal history. “As for her diamond ring, I heard she opted to take it off as though she forgot to wear either, to avoid scrutiny over where her band had gone.

KIWI WHO BROKE THE NEWS Prince Harry’s decision to step aside is one of the biggest royal stories in decades, and amazingly, it was broken by a Londonbased Kiwi holidaying in New Zealand! Dan Wootton, executive editor of The Sun newspaper, told Woman’s Day he worked on the story while spending time with his parents in Wellington. “I’d been dealing with my contacts for weeks,â€? he tells. “Harry and Meghan knew exactly what they were doing when they went rogue because I ďŹ rst put the story to their representatives on December 28, giving them at least 10 days to make other members of the family aware of what they were intending and to set some early ground rules.â€?

Dan has lived in the UK for 16 years, but grew up in Lower Hutt. He said the story was hugelyy signiďŹ cant. “I have been reporting tii on the civil war within the royal family for the past 18 months, but this has exploded out in public and it’s ugly.â€? He described the couple’s desire to work with only a select group of media as “ridiculousâ€?. He explains, “Harry and Meghan had the most incredible coverage for months. Remember the royal wedding? “What they want is Hollywood adoration rather than fair and balanced coverage.â€?

quick to point out that today’s Duke of Sussex is a very different character from the happy-go-lucky prince who, at the time of his wedding, was second only to the Queen in the public popularity stakes. His gradual detachment from the public, his family and some of his oldest friends has saddened many of his fans. A close source last week accused him of developing a victim mentality since meeting Meghan.

“They are in this weird bubble and have this strange siege mentality. They feel like it’s them against the world and are painting a very unfair picture of how this is a family that supposedly doesn’t understand or support them, which is complete rubbish. And insiders say the couple’s decision to spend much of their time in Canada – the country where they met and fell in love – was prompted by a number of factors. “Harry is extremely protective of Meghan and never wants to see her as miserable as his mother was. He will do anything to put a smile on her face, says one. Charles’ push to reduce the size of the monarchy has also been taken heed of, with two recent royal portraits featuring the Queen, Charles, William and Prince George, driving home to Harry that his role in The Firm is not as important as it once was. “That picture was the clearest indication that Harry and Meghan are not considered part of the future of the institution, says a source. “From their point of view, from that moment there was no point hanging around. By the time the couple returned from their Vancouver Island vacation, where they spent time with Doria and Meghan’s friends and enjoyed hikes and morning jogs, their resolve had hardened. They left eight-month Archie with a nanny and headed home to

Rumours of a rift between Harry and William emerge after the Sussexes split from Kensington Palace to form their own royal household.

Losing their $2 million of taxpayer funds will hardly put a dent in the Sussexes’ rather deep pockets. The couple already have a private fortune of $67 million, but social media expert Paul Sutton says the glamorous duo could earn another gargantuan fortune as social media inuencers. “They could potentially make millions,â€? says Paul. “Luxury jewellery ďŹ rms would be particularly keen on Meghan.â€? The royal rogues, he says, are in the perfect position to leapfrog over the Kardashians to snatch the title of the most soughtafter inuencers on the planet. RRY & MEGHAN QUIT detonate the d h palace l shake-up. h k Just hours after a visit to the Canadian High Commission in London to thank them for the country’s warm and friendly hospitality, they “pressed the nuclear button” on their future in the royal family. Unbeknown to even their own UK-based press team, they’d secretly created a new website, sussexroyal.com, on which they published what was essentially a letter of resignation. They spelt out the details of their new roles, including their desire to work with handpicked journalists and have greater freedom on social media. The duchess was in the UK for just three days before she returned to Canada, leaving her husband to face the fallout. After a year in which they’d hardly played ball with the British public, it’s not surprising that their decree was met with anger by many, with one aide saying, “They were given the wedding they wanted, the house they wanted, the office they wanted, the money they wanted, the staff they wanted, the tours they wanted and had the backing of their family. What more did they want?” Added royal author Ingrid Seward, “It looks like they want to keep their royal status, perks and privilege but not do the boring royal duties like visiting a hospital in Surrey. This is potentially the beginning of the end for them. They want to act like glitzy American

MEGHAN’S THE NEW WALLIS Prince Harry is not gone for good, but there are some striking similarities between the Duke of Sussex and his great-great-uncle Edward VIII, who shocked the world in 1936 when, after just 326 days as King, he abdicated for the woman he loved, Mrs Wallis Simpson. Like Wallis, Meghan is American and divorced. In addition, they both met their royal beaus at the age of 34. Now, it appears history will credit them both with having an influence on their husbands’ decisions to leave the royal fold. There are, of course, differences in their stories: King Edward felt he had no choice but to abdicate because royal protocol at the time forbade a member of the royal family from marrying a divorcée. celebrities – I feel sorry for the Queen. She’s an old woman and doesn’t want to upset her grandson.” According to our exclusive insider, despite the backlash Harry and Meghan remain determined to go through with their plan. “Ultimately they’re doing it for Archie and, hopefully, his future sibling. They want to raise their kids out of the royal spotlight where they can lead normal lives.” #

Edward abdicated as King to be with American divorcéeWallis, who loved dogs like Meghan.

By contrast, 81 years later, when Harry chose Meghan as his bride, the Californian actress was enthusiastically welcomed into the family, with the Queen even babysitting her dogs before the wedding. After abdicating, Edward and his bride were forced to live in exile, eventually settling in the South of France, where they lived in splendour, with 23 staff. Harry and Meghan, meanwhile, are making the conscious choice to exile themselves for part of the year and say they have every intention of continuing to

work both for their charities and themselves. As Meghan said before she walked up the aisle with Harry, “I never wanted to be a lady who lunches – I’ve wanted to be a woman who works.”

What it means to disgraced Prince Andrew Harry’s announcement that he’s stepping down as a senior royal may well have an impact on the line of succession to the throne. The prince is currently number six – behind Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, one – and his son Archie is number seven. Unless the Queen makes an exception, it’s likely Prince Andrew, 59 – currently persona non grata for his interview about his links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein – will be bumped up to sixth position!

NOVEMBER 14, 2019

JUNE 20, 2019 Harry and Meghan confirm they are splitting from the Royal Foundation charity with William and Kate to start their own initiative, Sussex Royal, to be launched this year.

OCTOBER 1, 2019 Meghan sues a UK paper, alleging a private letter to her father was published illegally. It’s believed this action was not sanctioned by the Queen.

It’s the fifth year in a row that the couple have spent time in the country they call their second home, and the Queen’s granddaughter recently admitted she loves the Aussie way of life so much that she’d consider a permanent move once her equestrian career is over. But according to several close sources, the family’s plans are actually much further along. In fact, Zara and Mike – who helped raise money for firefighters at a Magic Millions polo event last week amidst the country’s devastating bushfire crisis – have already viewed four luxury properties in the Queensland area and are investigating school options for the girls. The longer they spend in the country, the more they want to stay, confides a pal. “They feel incredibly relaxed in Australia and just love how happy the kids are too,” tells the source. “There’s the slower pace that they like, but the biggest drawcard is the idea of the girls growing up away from the glare of the spotlight that comes with being a royal. They say it’s the one place in the world where they feel as though they’re treated just like normal people.”

“Daddy, after this can we have a Vegemite sandwich?”

TO OZ! The royal insider says the couple have even mooted the idea of a move with Zara’s mother Princess Anne, as well as the Queen, who they spent Christmas with at Sandringham. They made it clear that while they’d still return to the UK often, they’d love their girls to experience another way of life. “They were very happy that the idea was met with an open mind. The Queen is at the stage in her life where she wants her family members to be happy, first and foremost,” claims the source. And in a recent interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, Zara, 38, and Mike, 41, opened up about their hopes and dreams for the future, as well as giving an insight into their life at home with Mia and Lena, who both seem to have inherited their mum’s love of horses. “They both ride,” Zara reveals. “Lena is in a little basket on the saddle, purely a passenger. But we just bought Mia a new pony called Magic.” While she hopes to compete at Olympic level again, the royal admitted that becoming a mum had taken a toll both physically and logistically. “You look back and realise

how much time you used to have before you had kids and then wonder, what was I doing with it? We make sure we’re looking after the kids properly and then our jobs come alongside. It’s about putting everything into place.” The couple say Mia is already showing signs of being sporty – “she does gymnastics and a lot of swimming, tennis, skiing and surfing.” Describing parenthood as “superb,” Mike says, “Mia is a fantastic bundle of energy and that challenges you as well and keeps it interesting. Lena is just starting to find her feet, but we’ve enjoyed every minute of it. You hope that’s what kids do to you and it’s been great.” And as they gushed about their love of Australia, they revealed that Mia had learnt to swim during one of her first holidays Down Under. “I love the lifestyle and the ability to get up early, go on the beach – especially for the kids, taking them in the ocean is brilliant,” he said. “The people over in Australia are so laid-back and they have good banter. No-one’s worried about talking to each other. It’s not a rushed lifestyle. I think it’s a great place and we

enjoy it so much.” And if they do make it their home, our source says they’d love to add to their family on this side of the world. After the devastation of two miscarriages between the births of Mia and Lena, Zara is said to have her heart set on one more baby to complete her family. “Zara’s longing to have a

third baby and with her 40th birthday looming next May, she doesn’t want to leave it too much longer,” says our source. “They’re hoping this trip helps them finally start making some concrete plans and taking further steps towards the move they’ve both been dreaming of. Another baby would be the icing on the cake.” #

CAM BABY ameron Diaz spent more than three heartbreaking years trying to start a family. The actress endured round after round of IVF and reportedly took “numerous cocktails of drugs that plunged her into a very bad place”, in her bid to become a mum. And finally, on December 30, the A-lister and her guitarist hubby Benji Madden welcomed a wee daughter they’ve called Raddix. A source close to the delighted couple says in the end, it wasn’t IVF that helped them start their long-awaited family, but a surrogate. “It was a private arrangement,” dishes the insider. “The surrogate was one of Cameron’s close family friends who she’s known for decades.” Adds another source, “They went through so much to get to this point. Cameron feels like this baby is truly a miracle.” Super-private Cameron, 47, and Benji, 40, took the world by surprise when they announced on social media on January 2 that they were

about Raddix

& BENJI’S SURPRISE finally parents: just six weeks earlier, Cameron had been photographed looking slim in high-waisted jeans while out for lunch in LA. The couple are now on cloud nine as they get little Raddix settled in at their Beverly Hills pad and adjust to life as a trio. “It’s been like a magical whirlwind,” says another insider, adding that Good Charlotte rocker Benji has been “waiting on Cam hand and foot. They’ve spent the last few years hoping for this and it surpassed all their expectations.” Until she met Benji, the Charlie’s Angel star was never desperate for kids. In 2014, she defended her status as a single and childless 40-something, saying, “I’m not going to do something because it’s expected. If a family happens, then it happens.” But that same year she was introduced to Benji by close pal Nicole Richie, 38, who married Benji’s twin brother Joel in 2010, and by the following year the loved-up twosome were happily married and beginning to talk about having a baby. It wasn’t as straightforward as they’d hoped and the constant disappointment of

failing to conceive with IVF was “a rollercoaster of emotions”, but they refused to give up and in 2018 Cameron announced her retirement from acting to concentrate on her wellbeing. Finally, she got what she’d been waiting for. According to the insider, the name Raddix is a combination of “rad” (one of their favourite words) and a translation of “new beginning” – a fitting sentiment after their challenging journey to parenthood. “It’s so like Cam and Benji to pick a quirky yet meaningful name,” says the pal, “and they agree it suits her perfectly.” The source adds the couple have a ton of support, including Nicole and Joel who live in the same gated community with their daughter Harlow, 12, and son Sparrow, 10. “Nicole and Joel have offered to help in any way they can. They’re going to be a huge part of Raddix’s life – the plan is to integrate the two families so all the kids can be one, big happy family.” And after so many setbacks, the besotted pair are ready to celebrate. Adds the source, “Everyone’s thrilled to see them in this wonderful place.” #

Patients will be like, ‘Are you a nurse or social worker?’ And I have to explain that no, I’m the doctor!â€? When The Bachelorette NZ premieres on TVNZ 2 on January 27, viewers will watch Lesina try to ďŹ nd lasting love. But how did this charming doctor end up on a television reality show looking for her dream man? She explains, “I’ve spent the last ďŹ ve years of my life dedicated to my career and I decided something needed

to change. I want a family and kids, and that wasn’t how my life was going if I kept on the same track.â€? After moving to Sydney last year, she took up a locum position, where she travels to various hospitals and ďŹ lls in for sick doctors or anyone on extended holiday leave. “It’s a really exible job and I wanted that time to take a step back, not work so hard, and meet someone,â€? she tells. “I also moved to Sydney because I wasn’t getting anywhere in Auckland. While she’d never thought of signing up for a reality show in the past, Lesina couldn’t resist tossing her name in the hat for The Bachelorette. “I would be terrible on The Block or any cooking show – that would just not be my thing, she laughs. “But this was perfect timing and really fortuitous. And I thought it would be a great story – imagine if I met someone like that? acting! After completing her seven-year stint to become a doctor, Lesina thrived as a junior before working her way up to surgical registrar. But a few years later she decided to take some time off for a course at South Seas Film and Television School. “I always loved drama in school and knew one day I’d like to do acting, but med school came ďŹ rst,â€? she tells. “It was my number-one dream.â€? Lesina’s appeared in a few commercials and had roles as an extra in Power Rangers, Filthy Rich and Shortland Street. It was actually one of her contacts who was

working on The Bachelorette who shoulder-tapped her to apply for the show. But the idea of being part of reality television does scare Lesina. “In a commercial, you play a character and it’s such a small-scale thing, whereas this is me – I’m not playing anyone else. So that’s going to be pretty different for me,â€? she admits. But acting isn’t her only passion – when she’s not working, Lesina says you’ll ďŹ nd her constantly travelling, saying she’s visited almost every continent. In fact, she was standing in the middle of an airport in Portugal

when she got the call to say she’d been selected as the Bachelorette. “They asked if I was alone and I was like, ‘Well, not really but I’m surrounded by Portuguese people so I think it’s OK,’ she recalls with a laugh. “It was just like the day I got the call about med school, that feeling of, ‘Stop, no way, you’re joking!’ Travelling is in her blood with her parents meeting in Samoa, falling in love and globe-trotting around the world together before giving birth to Lesina while on a trip to the US. “They didn’t quite make it

My dad’s a really kind guy – softly spoken and humble. I really want someone like that to New Zealand in time before I was born, but we ended up moving here just a year later,” she says. When asked what her parents think of the new TV adventure, she laughs, “They were like, ‘Oh Lesina!’ But they said they’ll support me with whatever I want to do and that’s all they really had to say about it.” Lesina didn’t have any hesitation about putting her name down for The Bachelorette but says she never considered signing up to be part of The Bachelor NZ. “Everyone who knows me understands that wouldn’t

be my thing,” she asserts. “I wouldn’t ever like the idea of competing with other girls.” After three seasons of watching Bachelors Art Green, Jordan Mauger and Zac Franich, many fans were crying out for a female-led series, saying it was unfair. When the announcement finally came that The Bachelorette was landing on our shores, it sent a buzz of excitement throughout the country – and even Lesina admits she felt it. “I didn’t really think of signing up at that point, but I remember reading an

article saying the show was coming and it said it’s about time we got a woman of substance on TV – and I was like, ‘Yes! How cool and refreshing would that be?’ It’s so great and I’m really excited to see where it goes.” Lesina’s most serious relationship lasted seven years, but ended not long after she started full-time work. Today, when it comes to the qualities Lesina wants in her partner, she says she’d love someone like her dad. “He’s a really kind guy – softly spoken and humble,” smiles Lesina. “I really want someone like that. It’s also

really important to me that they’re non-judgemental and open-minded because I come from a really diverse background and there are lots of different cultures, religions, political beliefs and whatnot.” It’s clear when talking to Lesina that she’s serious about finding love on the dating series and says she’s ready to be in a relationship. She enthuses, “I haven’t met my soulmate yet. I definitely loved all my exes, but I don’t think I’ve been in love from the bottom of my heart … but I hope I can find that.” #

LOVE-ALL FO STAR MICHA The Kiwi sportsman aces his big day

A

mid the leafy backdrop of a quiet olive grove, top-seed tennis player Michael Venus stands beneath a gazebo, white silk billowing softly in the wind. As his gorgeous bride Sally Trafford walks up the aisle, his heart melts. “Seeing her was really emotional,” the 32-year-old later tells Woman’s Day. “That feeling in your stomach – it was like having butterflies.” And as the smitten pair turn to face each other, a smiling Sally reaches up to adjust her groom’s crooked bow tie, causing the guests to erupt in laughter. “We’re not the most serious of people and we wanted the wedding to reflect us as a couple,” explains Mike, as he’s known to friends and family. The duo’s special day comes just days after arriving in Auckland from their home base of London. The Kiwi couple chose Auckland’s Bracu for its

minimalistic yet romantic vista, which suited their down-to-earth personalities perfectly. Mike and Sally, who share 14-month-old daughter Lila, admit that planning a wedding from the other side of the world was difficult, particularly when there were so many last-minute jobs to do. The sportsman was juggling a hectic practise schedule with tasks such as getting the cars cleaned, writing his speech and having his beard trimmed! But as their special day comes and morning rain gives way to mid-afternoon sun, the groom looks relaxed greeting guests as they arrive at the stunning venue. Among family and friends are fellow doubles player Marcus Daniell, and US players Bradley Klahn and Christina McHale. When 3.30pm rolls around, people take their seats as Mike, looking a tad nervous, chats with his groomsmen at the end of the aisle. Celebrant Ken Youngson, who Mike has known for 10 years, welcomes everyone and, catching a glimpse of a white Jaguar, asks them to stand. All eyes are on the small wooden walkway as Calum Scott’s “You Are the Reason” plays and four bridesmaids, each

The stage set, there is an audible gasp as Sally, her arm linked with her father Phil, makes her appearance. With her hair elegantly tied back, the brunette beauty wears a silk satin organza dress adorned with delicate appliquéd leaf detail. Clasped at the back by small buttons, her veil floats along behind. Following tradition, her Valentino shoes from a luxury reseller are her something old, while her dress and earrings are her something new. A bracelet, designed for Lila by her sister Amy, is her something borrowed and her wee girl’s blue sash on her dress is her mum’s something blue! As Sally’s dad shakes hands with her groom and steps aside, celebrant Ken encourages a round of applause for the stunning bride, then kicks things off with a phone call he received from Mike. “The excitement was so great, I thought he had won Wimbledon,” he teases. “But he had won something far better – Sally’s heart!” Then in a sombre moment,

Mike declares to his bride, “I promise to choose you every day and to do the hard work of making now into always. I promise to support your dreams and to respect our differences. I promise to forgive you like I hope to be forgiven. I promise to tell you my feelings even when I don’t know what I’m feeling.” And then, to much laughter, he adds, “I promise not to watch the next Netflix episode without you.” Sally, 34, repeats the same vows, but changes the last line to, “I can’t promise not to watch the next Netflix episode without you, but I do promise to watch it again with you later!” After saying their “I dos”, they exchange rings. From Brighton’s Venus Diamonds, Mike slips Sally’s rose gold and diamond band onto her finger. “I give this ring as a symbol of my love, my faith and our strength together,” he pronounces, adding that it is his, “covenant to learn and grow with you”. Sally pledges the same, but it takes a moment for his matte gold ring to fit! As they move aside to sign the registry, a surprise twist awaits – an envelope taped beneath everyone’s chair, for guests to write a piece of marriage advice to the couple. The ceremony nearing its end, bridesmaid Sarah reads The Giraffe and the Monkey, a poem by Daniel Thompson. Both funny and endearing, Sally is brought to tears and turns to wipe them away before they are pronounced husband and wife. And with only one thing left to do, Mike lovingly pulls Sally to him and they kiss for the first time as a married couple. Formalities over, everyone moves to the Pavilion, while the bride and groom have photos taken. Rejoining their guests, the sweethearts tuck into a three-course dinner.

eing rich and famous can lead to accusations of stars doing the dirty behind their partners’ backs. But when they’re forced to face allegations of philandering, what happens to the “other women” once the scandal fades away? From nannies to prostitutes, here’s what the women embroiled in some of Hollywood’s biggest scandals are doing now.

Hugh Grant & Elizabeth Hurley

THE HOOKER

I

n one of the most sordid stories in celebrity history, Hugh Grant was arrested and charged for indecent conduct with a prostitute in a public place after he was caught getting oral sex from hooker Divine Brown in his car in Hollywood. Making matters worse, the British actor was dating Elizabeth Hurley at the time. The embarrassing 1995

incident left Hugh red-faced and sex worker Divine – real name Estella Marie Thompson – a whole lot richer. She’s said to have earned more than $1 million from interviews and media appearances, and is thankful the scandal helped her turn her life around. She put her two eldest daughters through college and moved to Atlanta, Georgia,

where she had another daughter with her now ex-fiancé. Divine, 50, now goes by the name of Stella Thompson and enjoys her quiet life in the suburbs, where she works in the music industry. “Everything worked out for the better,” she says. “It helped me turn it into something positive … I was

blessed it could get me out of that lifestyle.” Hugh, 59, never denied what he did and admits, “I was just an idiot. I didn’t try to say, ‘I’ve got this psychological problem.’ I just said, ‘I did it.’” Incredibly, his famous girlfriend didn’t dump him for another five years, and they still remain good friends.

Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore

THE PARTY GIRL

O

n his sixth wedding anniversary to then-wife Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher was busted getting intimate with someone else. The That ’70s Show star spent a wild night partying in his suite at San Diego’s Hard Rock Hotel with parttime model Sara Leal in 2011. She claimed they had a steamy romp that, had Ashton had his way, would have been a threesome with her best friend. Sara insisted Ashton, now 41, seduced her and told her he was separated from his

wife, and later admitted she wished she’d never done it. “He just came up and kissed me,” she said at the time. Sara, 30, reveals she got fired from her job and her family refused to speak to her for being “the other woman”. She insists the public image of her being a party girl was far from the truth and that she just made a stupid mistake. She now works as a yoga instructor in San Diego and has been in a relationship with her boyfriend for three years.

While Jen doesn’t blame the nanny for her break-up with Ben, Christine has made the most of her fame.

Ashton told Sara (left) he was separated from wife of six years Demi (above).

THE NANNY

T

he demise of Ben Affleck’s 10-year-marriage to Jennifer Garner – the mother of his three children – was thought to be due to his alleged affair with the family’s nanny Christine Ouzounian. But Jennifer, 47, later insisted, “We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny.” Although Ben, also 47,

denied any wrongdoing, Jennifer later publicly called him out for having “bad judgement” and criticised his behaviour. The nanny in question had no problems revelling in her newfound fame, though. While Ben and Jen were navigating the messy road of divorce, she reportedly tipped off paparazzi to snap photos of her with Ben at a rental house, during a late-night hook-up. At one point, Ben was thought to have helped shelter her at a plush Bel Air hotel, but Christine wasn’t one to hide away for long and has been regularly snapped living the high life in LA, driving fast cars and flaunting her designer wardrobe. She has, however, quit nannying and is now believed to be working in the insurance industry.

 Gwen’s lookalike Mindy had a three-year affair with Gavin.

The rumours about the alleged affair took its toll on Posh and Becks’ marriage.

wen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s 13-year marriage came crashing down when it was alleged he had been having an affair for three years with Mindy Mann, the Aussie nanny of their three kids. The No Doubt singer was believed to have uncovered the relationship in 2015 when another of their nannies found intimate messages and photos between Mindy and Gavin, and told her employer. Gwen, now 50, admitted, “My life blew up in my face,” and Gavin, 54, moved out of the family home a few weeks later. Mindy – who bore an uncanny resemblance to Gwen with her bleached blonde hair and wardrobe of Gwen’s hand-me-downs – stuck around in LA for a while working at early learning centre Pint Sized Kids, which she part-owned. But when she got pregnant to her boyfriend Spencer Gutcheon, they decided to move back to her home country. Mindy now lives in Queensland with her three-year-old daughter and is still with her baby daddy, who is a rock-climbing instructor.

Jude Law & Sienna Miller

THE NANNY

J

ude Law was a very bad boy in 2005 when he was caught in bed with one of his children's nannies, Daisy Wright. He was engaged to actress Sienna Miller at the time, but that didn’t stop his antics with Daisy, who, after rumours surfaced of the affair, sold her story to the tabloids – something she later said she regretted. Daisy claimed one of Jude’s kids even walked in on them in the bedroom. She said Jude dropped her “like a hot potato” once his ex-wife and mother of his children Sadie Frost got wind of the romance. Despite that,

David & Victoria Beckham

THE PERSONAL ASSISTANT

T

hey might have just celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, but David and Victoria Beckham’s marriage was once rocked by claims of an explosive affair with his personal assistant Rebecca Loos. In 2004, Rebecca told her story to the now-defunct British tabloid News of the World, alleging she’d had a four-month fling with David, now 44, while he was playing for Real Madrid. While he denied it, she

cashed in royally on the romance with modelling gigs for an endless stream of magazines – including Playboy – and stints on reality TV shows. She’s since shunned the spotlight, and the 42-year-old now lives in Norway with her husband of seven years, Dr Sven Christjar Skaiaa, and their two sons. She wrote on her Mountain Life blog, “If anyone had approached me 10 years ago

in London and told me that one day I would be living in an old farm house in a small town in the Norwegian mountains, married and a mother to two boys, I would have laughed. Yet here I am ... happier than I have ever been.”

she described the relationship as “amazing”. Jude, now 47, didn’t try to deny the allegations and made a public apology to Sienna, 38, expressing his “sincere regret”. Daisy, 40, has since set up her own high-end nanny service called Silentnight Nannies, with some speculating it was a dig

ARCHIE’S WEARING OUR BEANIE Meet the Kiwi crafters with royal approval

laire Conza dreamed of creating a business that could change the world – but she never imagined a post on a royal Instagram account featuring adorable baby Archie wearing one of her sweet $49 beanies would make her social enterprise known across the globe! Just hours after the Duke

and Duchess of Sussex shared a snap to their 10 million followers on New Year’s Day of their eight-month-old son wearing the cute Cocobear hat by Kiwi knitting brand Make Give Live, business partners Claire, 37, and Becky Smith, 50, were faced with restocking their entire online store and even temporarily closing orders. “You could never dream this stuff up,” tells Claire, who

was blown away at how the ‘Archie effect’ had such a dramatic impact on their sales. For the Auckland mum, who crafted a unique plan to get communities of knitters purling and crocheting in company for their wellbeing, as well as giving away warm beanies for Kiwis in need, the way her fledgling business has suddenly been boosted by one of the most famous families on the planet reduced her to tears. “We had a little bit of breathing space because initially nobody knew it was

a Make Give Live beanie. But in the middle of the night stories started coming out about how intentional it was that they shared that photo because they wanted to support what we were about.” While Meghan and Prince Harry had been gifted a Make Give Live beanie more than a year ago during their tour Down Under, the businesswomen had all but dismissed any chance of seeing the youngest royal wearing a piece from their handcrafted collection. “I guess you hope that they get to use it and maybe one day you get to see it, but that’s a really slim chance. To be honest, honest II’d almost forgotten about it,” confesses Claire. Bu ut when the rare pho oto of little Archie lo ooking cute as a b button, in the mistg grey merino pom-

pom hat, lovingly held in the arms of a smiling Harry, both Becky and Claire realised the beanie he was wearing was not the same style as the expectant couple were given. “One story said Meghan had since ordered two more beanies in the next sizes up so that Archie would always have one that fit. That got us quickly checking back through our orders. We found one from early November that was for the Cocobear beanie in sizes six to 12 months and one to three years from an address in Windsor. Looking more closely, y the email address was royal.uk. We didn’t pick up on it at the time, so when it did appear we were completely surprised and blown away,” laughs Claire. Waking on January 2 to orders pinging into their inbox every few minutes, it became more than clear the message of kindness and inclusion and being there for others – a key mission of their enterprise – had struck a chord with the Sussexes. “Part of the reason we were excited that they might get a beanie is that we knew how passionate they are about advocating for mental health. We thought that if they did read about our purpose it would resonate with them. So when we found out how intentional it was, we were

both just brought to tears,” shares Claire, still deeply moved by the gesture. “It was so touching.” The former fashion graduate says the commitment to wellbeing and using knitting as therapy was born out of her own experience of depression. “The repetition and mindfulness required to make stitches broke down negative thought patterns, and having something to feel proud about at the end gave me a boost,” she explains. Forced to reassess her life, the mum-of-one daughter and two stepsons decided she wanted to use her skills to create a business venture with heart. “We have groups of people

that get together every week for a couple of hours to have a good laugh, a cup of tea and enjoy making all these beautiful things,” she tells. “That is our main purpose, although a lot of people pick up on the ‘buy one, give one’ aspect – for every hat we sell we give one to a Kiwi in need – but that really feeds into giving our makers’ purpose and enriching them through the platform to give. We all know how much we get from giving.” With orders from all over the globe – including the sunny Bahamas – eager knitters are keen to make a dent on the 1000 hats to give away following the unprecedented demand.

Tells Claire, “Our makers have been saying, ‘Where’s the wool? We’re ready!’” It’s also provided an international platform for a pair of women who have fused hobby, heart and business to make the world a better place. “Creating Make Give Live and keeping it going has come with a lot of personal sacrifice. But I never let it go because I knew what it was doing for those involved and how important it was,” Claire says. “There were days I remember wondering how I could keep going and pushing through. I did sometimes think to myself one day I’ll look back and know that it was worth it.” #

amara and Paul Hedges call themselves the family that lives in the trees. They have an outdoor aerial yoga studio in their New South Wales backyard, which sits on the cusp of generous native bushland. Over a week ago, studio guests could hang in yoga hammocks and peer up into a canopy of soaring tree tops and out at thick greenery, packed with thriving wildlife. “You can still see the tops of the trees because they’re unburnt, but at eye level it’s all grey ashen patches and blackened tree stumps,” tells Samara, 32, a part-time secondary school teacher. “It was all bushland, but now you can see down to the highway. And I’m not hearing the birds and animals the way I usually can.” On January 4, the couple and their son Quinn, 18 months, almost lost everything at their property in Tomerong, Jervis Bay, because of the ravaging Australian bushfires. But thanks to an extraordinary effort by South Auckland-born Paul, 36, only the outskirts were left damaged. After two massive fires, hundreds of smaller ones and 12 exhausting hours circling his property with hoses and water on a dune buggy, the Kiwi dad saved their home and business. “Paul’s so brave and would’ve been running on pure adrenaline,” beams Samara, who met her hubby in London in 2009. “Thank goodness he started planning and prepping in case there was a fire because he was right.” When the couple bought their dream home in late 2018, there hadn’t been a wildfire in nearly 20 years. He ran extra-long hoses around the property and replaced old nozzles, before helping a neighbour fill his water tanks from their dam. Paul borrowed a machine to clear dead tree branches and debris around the fence lines, and the couple raked every leaf and stick in sight. Then he cleared the roof gutters, packing them with wet towels to block the drains and filling them with water. By New Year’s Eve, the fires were an hour and a half from their house. Samara’s parents, sister and her young kids were amongst those who had to evacuate. It took them 24 hours to reach Jervis Bay by car because of the terrifying chaos. On January 3, Samara’s family convinced her to leave

With their two dogs in tow, Samara took off with camping gear, food and water, a wad of cash and identification documents, her laptop and a hard drive containing family photos. But Paul stayed, connecting his ute to the boat he’d filled with emergency supplies. Samara shares, “He refused to leave, so I said, ‘Don’t be stupid and make the call if it’s not safe to stay.’ I felt really sad not staying to help, but it was obviously the right decision being with my child.” At 2pm the next day, Paul rang to say the fire had arrived. Every two hours after that, he made two-minute calls to update Samara. She admits, “I was picturing every possession in my house, faced with the reality that I might lose it all. Where would we even start again?” Paul worked relentlessly putting out fires with hoses,

He’d drunk 50 bottles of water and his feet were covered in blisters. “We’re lucky the fire burnt the bottom of the trees and not the canopy because it would’ve been very different,” says Samara, whose chickens and ducks were unscathed. Three days later, a heavy dumping of rain put out any remaining smouldering ash and the proud wife tells, “We started taking yoga classes again to create a space for the community to come and not think about the fires for an hour or two.” Instead of the sounds of

Everyday food

WHERE TO START BU LOCAL In-season food sourced locally cuts carbon miles. And it’s not just fruit and veges ... Stir in the water, bringing to the boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Strain stock through a fine sieve into a heatproof jug or bowl, and discard the solids. Return liquid to the same cleaned pan, and

Return pasta to pan with 2 tablespoons of the remaining oil, tossing to combine. Cover to keep warm. 4. Heat 1 tablespoon of the remaining oil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Cook prawns, turning, for 2 minutes or until just cooked through. Remove from pan. 5. Heat remaining oil in small saucepan over medium heat. Cook garlic and chilli, stirring,

for 1 minute or until golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel. Add parsley leaves to pan, cooking for 10 seconds. Stir in rind. 6. Add parsley oil to spaghetti in pan with prawns, garlic, chilli, stock and juice, tossing well. Season.

2 In a food processor, process the biscuits and almonds until a fine crumb forms. Add in the sugar and butter and mix well. Press this firmly into the tart tin, going up the sides as well. Bake for 10-15 minutes until set. Remove from the oven and set aside. Reduce oven to 160°C (140°C fan-forced). 3 In a large bowl, whip the cream cheese until smooth. Turn the oven off and leave to cool in the oven, then chill.

4 To make the ginger syrup, in a medium saucepan on a low heat, add the sugar, water and ginger until a syrup forms. This should take about 7 minutes. Remove the ginger and allow to cool for a few minutes before adding in the fresh peach slices. 5 To serve, pile the peaches in the centre of the tart, drizzling the last of the syrup over. 1

The hardest part about starting a run journey is making the decision to begin. So start today.

2

Ask a friend (or several!) to join you on your beginner run journey. You can cheer each other on. It makes it more fun. On the days you feel unmotivated to run, it will spur you into action if you know a pal is waiting for you.

3

Small steps work best. Start with 10 minutes twice weekly. Walk a powerpole, run the next. Repeat. Take it slow and easy. This gives your muscles and ligaments time to adapt and strengthen. It’s all about time in motion at this stage and it doesn’t matter if it’s all walking. The worst thing you can do is run too hard and long too soon.

4

Spend a brief time doing some dynamic stretches – such as lunges – before you run. run This gets your body primed for moving well. p

Be OK about being an absolute beginner. Own this! If you practise anything, then you get better at it. The same philosophy applies with running. After a few weeks, you will feel stronger and fitter. After several weeks, you’ll notice you can run a bit more than before. It feels amazing! So trust the process.

Only a small percentage of runners try to win run events. Most people – like you and me – run for their wellbeing. It’s all

The “runner’s high” is science-backed and real. I explain the hormones and science behind this phenomenon in my book Balance. It’s super interesting! When you run, you can also go into a state of “flow”. This is a science-backed state too. It’s a key to feeling happy!

Guilt-free

SWAPS

No more feeling deprived with these healthy choices

S

ummer is my favourite time of year but with celebrations, barbecues, social events and long, hot days, it definitely makes it harder to stick to your usual healthy routines. While it’s OK to indulge on special occasions, it’s important you make good choices the majority of the time, and with some easy food swaps, you can enjoy the lighter versions of your summer staples.

ICE CREAM

Wellness

With Gemma McCaw

FRIES Try swapping out traditional fries for homemade kumara chips cooked in coconut oil. Kumara provides more nutrients than potato fries and cooking with coconut oil means lots of hearthealthy fats.

DRESSINGS

Most of us love an ice cream on a hot summer’s day, but here’s a low-fat, guilt-free version. Slice up soft bananas, then freeze in an airtight bag for at least two hours. Remove and whiz in a food processor until smooth. This treat is gluten, dairy and sugar-free. I’ve also been freezing bananas on popsicle sticks dipped in a little yoghurt for my little one Charlotte, a perfect remedy for teething too.

Shop-bought mayonnaise can be high in fat, salt and sugar. If you’re making a potato salad, swap out the mayo for Greek yoghurt. A tablespoon of mayo is worth 100 calories compared with Greek yoghurt, which is only eight. And when it comes to dressing a green salad, mix together lemon juice and olive oil for a healthier and delicious alternative to store-bought options.

CHIPS & DIP A classic Kiwi fave, chips and dip are delicious, but it’s hard to stop after just a few. For a healthier and more filling snack, try guacamole and vege sticks made from carrot, cucumber, celery and capsicum – or if you’re short on time, serve them with readymade hummus!

camole

sh 3 ripe ocados and mix with 1 diced tomato, ½ finely chopped red onion, 1 crushed garlic clove, salt and pepper, 1 tablespoon chopped coriander and the juice of 1 lemon.

BURGER

PICTURE: GETTY IMAGES.

Try substituting your thick white bun, which has very little nutritional goodness, for a wholegrain alternative, or even better, an iceberg lettuce leaf (a bunnace). Wrap all your salad goodies inside and add your favourite grilled meat. Alternatively, ditch the meat and pack your bunnace with grilled veges like eggplant and courgette, and add haloumi cheese.

Questions for Gemma Writeto wdaynz@bauermedia.co.nz or Woman’sDay,PrivateBag92512, Wellesley Street, Auckland.

ALCOHOL Summer means plenty of socialising, but just be mindful of your intake. Enjoy your social occasions, but try opting for alcohol-free alternatives whenever possible. Try flavouring sparkling water with mint, strawberries, cucumber or lemon, or quenching your thirst with a kombucha. Your body and mind will thank you for it the next day!

Tan-tastic

BRONZING TIPS

with these handy DIY hints f you’re an at-home pro, there’s probably not a lot you don’t already know about tanning. But you should never stop learning! Here are our favourite fake tan hacks to help take your bottle bronzing and in-salon glow to the next level.

I

Always shave or wax and exfoliate 24 hours before tanning to ensure a clear, even surface for a streak-free result. Exfoliating too close to your application won’t leave an adequate surface for the product to develop on.

4

If you have open pores and like to tan your face, run an ice cube over those areas first to tighten the skin and prevent the tan from settling.

5

If you’re nervous about tanning your face, mix one small pump of your fake tan with your night moisturiser for a soft golden glow.

For immediate tanning mishaps on areas such as knuckles, apply a small amount of whitening toothpaste and rub with a warm, damp flannel until you’ve buffed off what you need to. To help remove your tan with ease before your next session, use a dedicated self-tan remover.

6

A tanning mitt is an essential tool for achieving a flawless tan, and it helps prevent stained palms too.

2

Make sure you scrub with a non-oily exfoliator to remove dead skin cells and create a smooth canvas for your tan. If you use a product with an oil base, it may result in residue on your skin and leave you with an uneven finish.

Avoid showering right before you tan. It can open pores and if they don’t get a chance to close, you can be left with small tan spots across the skin. Showering just before a tan can also unbalance the pH levels of the skin.

64

Woman’s Day

When your mitt needs a clean, simply take it into the shower with you and wash it with shampoo, then leave it on the towel rail to dry.

8

Summer heat and sweat can disrupt a freshly applied tan. Straight after tanning, dust some talcum powder under the armpits, around the chest and on the back of the legs to soak up any sweat without affecting the tan.

10

When applying your product, try using two tanning mitts instead of one so you can cover more skin in half the time while also achieving a more even colour.

After tanning your face, use a (reusable!) straw when drinking to avoid a white top lip.

If you need to shave in the days after you’ve tanned, use an electric shaver to remove the top layer of hair so as not to disturb your tan.

13

Unless you have a willing wingman during every at-home session, invest in a handy back applicator so you can reach every last spot.

Preparation is key to achieving a flawless fake tan.

5 reasons to love

MELBOURNE

Take a detour down the city’s backstreets and alleyways

Y

1

Inside intel

Of course a short trip to a big city can be overwhelming – what do you do and where/ how do you do it with what little time you have? But this particular city has a great resource in the snappily-named website whatson.melbourne. vic.gov.au. It’s easy to follow, wildly informative and has a great section called “walks and itineraries”.With what little time I had to spare, I downloaded the Melbourne Street Art Walk, which not only showed me the city’s hidden graffiti treasures, but took me past just about everything else I would want to do.

2Guildford greenery I started my self-guided walk on Guildford Lane, one of Melbourne’s many tuckedaway brick back alleys, although this one – despite the industrial vibe – has been adorned with plants and vines to give it an urban jungle feel. It’s an Instagrammer’s dream, and because it’s Melbourne, a good coffee is never far away either.

66

Woman’s Day

Try Krimper or, for something completely different, book an hourly session to pat, play and socialise with two floors of moggies as you caffeinate at the Cat Café.

3

Shop shop shop!

After winding my way down colourful Tattersalls Lane, home to funky bars and cheap eateries, my walk took me plum into the middle of Bourke St Mall, home to David Jones and Myer department stores with Melbourne’s 1864 postal building on the corner – now featuring budget-friendly fashion mecca H&M. Turn a corner and you’re in Royal Arcade, Melbourne’s oldest covered shopping precinct with its range of popular boutiques and specialty stores. Or go in the opposite direction and you’ll find Emporium, with star resident Uniqlo and my favourite shop, Jac and Jack. I wasn’t in financial condition for shopping on this particular visit, but a girl can still slobber over window displays, can’t she?

4

Chow down

Down to the east of Federation Square in the city’s most famous laneways, Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane (yes, it is named after the rock group), are some of the city’s most popular graffiti and you definitely won’t be the only one taking photos

there. But this part of town also has some sensational eating. Cumulus is a gorgeous bustling café popular with locals, while its sister restaurant Supernormal does a roaring trade in dumplings. Following my art map, I meandered down to the Yarra River where at certain times of the year there’s a night noodle market – some nights it’s a poodle market and you can even bring your pooch! On a side trip to the Cuba St/ Ponsonby-ish suburb of Fitzroy, I found the Italian neighbourhood bar Enoteca – perfect for a late lunch and glass of prosecco.

5 The Brady bunch

My trip to Victoria was very last minute and coincided with the Melbourne Cup. Do you know it was cheaper to find a hotel in Melbourne on the busiest day of their year than it is on any normal night in Auckland? What’s that about? Anyway, I was thrilled with my boutique choice of the brand-new Brady Hotel Jones Lane. Tucked away on the cusp of Chinatown, its New York warehouse vibe appealed to me from first glimpse. The room was perfect, the bed divine, the coffee bar downstairs a delightful breakfast spot and the whole of the gorgeous city was walkable from the front door. I’ll be back!

There are plenty of Inst worthy artworks tuckedagramin the city’s many lanewaway ays.

LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX My partner was recently unfaithful and I know I should break up with him, but I’m embarrassed to say that it’s made me feel really desperate to “be” with him. Instead of being angry, I’m just worried he’ll go. I’m otherwise a normal, strong, independent person. What’s happening to me? ● Confused, Hamilton

Sex toys are not crazy, but I know what you mean. Not everybody is looking for something new as they love their sex life as it is. If you do want to throw a tiny little bit of spice into things, you could try something like a nipple arousal gel for extra stimulation.

My son wants to suddenly talk about sex a lot and even though I thought I was open, I find I’m hopeless at talking about this. He asked me why I thought pornography was such a bad thing – can you help me explain it? ● Tough talk, Blenheim

My partner and I have recently got into a new kind of sexual play, but it’s made me very conscious of my private body parts. Are there wipes made especially for that purpose? ● Clean queen, Wellington

I’d avoid giving moral judgements and instead focus on facts. I think when teenagers sense your personal position on things they can use that to their advantage. What you think is sometimes the opposite of what they want to do on their quest to define themselves. What you can provide are the basic facts. It’s illegal to view pornography when you’re under age. It’s a business based on make-believe scenarios. The women are paid to make it look like they’re enjoying themselves and their sexuality – they’re actors, and in many instances, underpaid and overexploited at young ages. It’s a distortion of real life and real relationships, so therefore it’s a dangerous place for people to “learn”.

You’re still all of those things. It sounds like you are experiencing a phenomenon known as “hysterical bonding”. It’s possible your brain is telling you your partner suddenly becomes extra desirable now you know there’s a ‘threat’ to the union. Also, when bad things happen, it’s normal for us to turn to our partners for comfort. That’s a preestablished pattern you’ve become accustomed to and even though he’s the one who hurt you, your heart is still on catch-up. Your body is experiencing a wealth of stress hormones and you’re coping the best you can. All you can do is create space and fight your urge to hold on with objective commonsense. The best way through is talking and making zero promises that you’re OK with this behaviour. Commitment to conversation and recovery will be the only way to figure out what’s real and what’s phantom.

FOODIE FAD A caveman diet is just nuts, tells Sarah-Kate

I

swear the more quinoa and kale I see on café and restaurant menus, the more I want to stay at home and eat a mince pie. Quinoa tastes like crunchy dust in my opinion and I object to its ridiculous pronunciation (keen-wa). It smacks of false advertising. Yes, it’s wheat-free and full of nutrients, but dear God, you still have to eat the stuff. As for kale, the only time I’ve enjoyed it, it was deepfried, heavy on the salt. However, anything cooked that way tastes a thousand times better, so there’s that. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I’m against clean eating. I’m very much for eating of any kind. But I’m working my way up to an enormous grudge against the cavemen because I think the Paleo diet

has a lot to answer for. I get that obesity, heart disease and diabetes are things the cavemen didn’t have and for the most part, eating only what you can hunt or gather is a good premise. But times do change. Foraging in the suburbs these days is unlikely to get you your five plus a day, unless you’re willing to go through other people’s garbage, which presents certain health risks. These are likely treatable by modern medicine but still, not what being a caveman is all about. And should poor Og turn up at a Ponsonby Road café, he’d drop his club in shock to find fully-clothed thin people forking out small fortunes for bowls of green leaves sprinkled with nuts and seeds. I mean, nuts and seeds?

They’re everywhere! Mind you, I am a nut and seed-free zone. A pumpkin seed can and on one occasion has put me in hospital for four days, so the fact that they are now scattered to the winds in all directions is a severe irritant. I ordered a bowl of soup recently, only to have it turn up sprinkled liberally with said seeds. On soup! I’m with the huntergatherers when it comes to cutting out sugary drinks, artificial sweeteners, processed meats and all that synthetic yuckiness. What my Ponsonby Road time traveller would make of frozen sausage rolls guaranteeing 16% meat I shudder to think. But no potatoes? The Lynch ancestors who roamed the Irish part of the planet millions of years ago hunted

and gathered those, for sure. And Lord knows I’ve tried just about every diet in my time, but ones that don’t allow cheese are destined to fail. Separate certain people from dairy products and the world is suddenly a very unfriendly place. Of course, anyone can eat whatever they like. Who am I to judge? Knock yourselves out, wannabe cave folk. But as we try to recreate the diets of our Paleolithic forebears, let’s bear in mind that quinoa has become so popular with all the thin fully-clothed people around the globe that the locals in the Andes, where it is grown, can no longer afford it. Imported junk food is cheaper. If my friend Og hears about that, he’ll be headed straight back to the Tardis and 8000BC.

Kate’s home truths

I

worry about my daughter – she’s insanely generous. It’s sweet now, but I worry that she’ll never have a bean to her name if she continues the way she’s going, this cruel world will swallow her up. She’s the child who always wants to buy an extra gift “from her”, even when we’re doing family-to-family gifts. “No, it’s all covered, babe,” I’ll tell her. “You don’t need to spend your money on anything else. I’ve bought from our family to theirs, it’s fine.” “No, Mum,” she insists. “It’s not fine. I want to give my own gift that’s from me, that I pay for, so that I know I have given something myself.” She’s also the child who’d pack up the contents of her

room and ask me to drive her to the local hospital to drop it off for sick children. She’s constantly emptying her drawers for neighbours. The other day, I went into her room and it was full of paper bags. Inside the bags were various things from her room – lip balms, hair scrunchies, hair bows … “What’s all this?” I asked, even though I had a hunch. “Oh, it’s for my friends,” she replied. “But why are you giving them your things?” I asked as I pulled a lip balm from one of the bags. “This is brand new.” “My friends come over and say they like it, so I want them to have it,” she stated. “Just because someone says they like something doesn’t mean they expect

you to package it up for them,” I retorted. “But I want to,” she replied. She was once at a sleepover wearing those woolly winter socks you get with pom poms on them, and someone in the house asked her where she got them because they wanted to buy some. My daughter promptly took them off and gave them away. I shouldn’t be surprised because her older brother is the same. It doesn’t matter how little money he has, he’s always shouting people. I’ll tell him he should save his money and he can’t afford to be so generous. “But I want to,” he’ll reply, much like his sister. Recently, he was asked to keep an eye on a friend’s parents’ property while they

were away for a couple of weeks. He dutifully did so, going over every day to feed and pat the cat and take the rubbish bins in and out to look like someone was home. At the end of the two weeks, he bought them an expensive bottle of wine and left it on their bench. “Why did you do that?” I asked. “You’ve done them the favour. You don’t need to buy them anything.” “I wanted to,” he said. “I thought they might feel like a nice glass of wine when they got home and I wanted to thank them for trusting me with their cat.” See what I mean about generous? “To be honest,” I replied, “they probably would’ve preferred fresh milk and some bread, but OK.”

Advice

ASK POLLY Get advice from fast-talking Rova and More FM star Polly Gillespie Pollyism of the week ’ve been pondering the subject of love. Love is the darndest thing, isn’t it? It’s such a huge emotion and takes on so many forms. Possibly the most baffling of them is the “being in love” conundrum. When I met my exhusband way back in the Middle Ages, I knew I was going to marry him. He was handsome and smart, and way too gorgeous for me. Being somewhat shallow and with way too much self-assurance, I knew I would nab the poor bloke and make him fall madly in love with me. Turns out we did fall in love and remained married for 25 years. Some of those years were spectacular and some were pretty tough. We went on a rollercoaster ride together that eventually ended for all kinds of reasons, and I think we’d both agree we each take responsibility for the end. How does love come and go? I remember that dumb catchphrase in the 1970s: “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” Are you freaking kidding me? What idiot thought up that line? I sure hope no-one took it to heart and believed that load of bull. Love means you’re going to say you’re sorry at least once a day forever. “Sorry I ate all the Weet-Bix!”, “Sorry I slept in!”, “Sorry I’m late”, “Sorry I sat on your sunglasses!”, “Sorry I made you grumpy!”, “Sorry I made you cry!”, “Sorry I forgot to get you a coffee too!”, “Sorry I spent our ‘fix the roof’ money on shoes!”, “Sorry I lost your eftpos card!”, “Sorry I can’t face dinner with your parents

PICTURE: GETTY IMAGES.

I

tonight!”, “Sorry I didn’t hear you say we needed petrol!” Love means trying to always say sorry when you’re wrong. Love is also sometimes inconvenient. I don’t know how many times I’ve been dating a man (it sounds like I’ve dated hundreds of blokes, which I haven’t) and not been in love, but friends have commented, “I love your new man. You’re obviously in love. You look so happy!” When in fact you’re just about to dump him. Then there are people who fall madly in love and no-one sees the reason why. You seem mismatched or wrong for each other. He’s a truck driver and you’re a lawyer. He’s 30 and you’re not. He’s a pig hunter and you’re vegan. Who knows why we fall so utterly in love with seemingly wrong choices? It certainly doesn’t make life easy. Yes, sure there are some couples who look so right for each other that they look like twins. You know those couples I mean. We love who we love. The heart wants what it wants. Who knows why we throw ourselves into chaotic, maddening turmoil with another individual? It must have to do with a look in their eyes or the sound of their voice, or the way they look standing in the light, but it’s very rarely convenient and nearly always life-changing. Honestly, I haven’t been out with that many men. Well, OK, maybe I have. No judging please.

NEWSFLASH!

BOMBSHELL I

Watch your back, Roger! John Lithgow (right) plays the Fox CEO.

The award-winning actress takes a stand for women

n 2016, Fox News CEO Roger Ailes was fired after at least 20 women came forward accusing him of sexual harassment. One of those women was controversial news anchor Megyn Kelly, whose story is hitting the big screen in the highly anticipated film Bombshell.

Stepping into the newsreader’s shoes is Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, who’s almost unrecognisable in the role thanks to special effects make-up – including prosthetic eyelids! Ahead of the release, the Atomic Blonde star, 44, chats about the movie, her co-stars and how people's views of sexual harassment are changing. Leading ladies (from left) Nicole, Margot and Charlize are a power trio at the film’s premiere in LA.

72

Woman’s Day

How much did you know about Megyn’s story going

into this film? I was fully aware of some of the controversial things she’d said. There were things about Megyn that were very offputting to me – but I realised we had a lot in common. We’re both incredibly strong women who can come across as hard. We’re both ambitious too. Did you know Margot Robbie or Nicole Kidman before Bombshell? I knew Nicole socially, but not very intimately. I’ve always wanted to do something with her. Margot really impressed me. She reminds me a bit of myself in that she has a vast interest in wanting to explore different things. She’s the heartbeat of this film. What do you think is most

important for people to know about sexual harassment? It’s a very wide spectrum, and there are levels of it that we’ve not called harassment. Women have believed that’s just how it is and that sometimes we have to make ourselves smaller for things to go smoothly. But that’s harassment. That’s a power play that should not be allowed. Now, so many women have bravely stepped forward to share their stories and it’s because of them that we have movements like Time’s Up and #MeToo. What do you think this movie says about the power of women? When women come together and unify, they’re so much stronger.

Who am I? I was born in the UK in 1994. I grew up in a regular family and attended a local school, but always loved music and singing. By my mid-teens, I was playing in a band and Mum suggested I should try out for The X Factor. Although I made it through to the first round, I failed to progress further, however, on the suggestion of the judges I was placed with four other soloists to form a boy band. Although we came third, Simon Cowell signed us to his record label. Our first single went straight to the top of the charts, and we became overnight megastars. Our 2014 world tour broke ticket-sales records, but by 2015 the pressure had started to take its toll, and the following year we disbanded to follow our own projects. My first solo single, Sign of the Times, was a hit as was my self-titled album, and I thrilled my fans by making my first foray into acting, earning a role in the WWII drama Dunkirk on my acting merits alone. This year, my second album Fine Lines has again hit number one and my song “Watermelon Sugar” is currently on heavy rotation on radio playlists. Also a fashion icon, who am I? SOLUTION NEXT WEEK

Aussie in our thoughts

Cook meat and poultry thoroughly, until juices run clear.

My thoughts, prayers and love are with all Australians. It’s such a terrible experience for the lovely people, the wildlife, firefighters and other emergency services. The world is reaching out to them and it’s wonderful to see everyone doing their bit, from donating money to providing much-needed essential items. Australia, you hold a very special place in all our hearts. ✦ Stephanie, Tauranga

Good on Meng Foon for sharing the story of his arranged marriage (WD, Jan 13), especially given the recent controversy over migrant couples in arranged marriages not being eligible for visas. Thank goodness our government saw sense and changed the rules – even though some unions are arranged, they are still legal and binding. In today’s world of reality TV where couples are Married at First Sight, society has definitely changed and people connect in very different ways than they used to. I think Meng Foon will make a great race relations commissioner as he has an appreciation for a diverse range of cultures. ✦ Jess, J , Wellington g

Your STARS

Your heavenly destiny for the week January 13-19 Aquarius JAN 21 – FEB 19

These go-getter stars could turn your life around. At work, don’t be afraid to step forward and present an idea you’ve been mulling over. With your creativity firing, try a new hobby or dive into a fun project with the kids. Forget about convention – it’s your time to shine!

Taurus

APR 21 – MAY 21 A luxe weekend awaits, but first, get yourself sorted. Midweek decluttering sessions prove productive, and you could unearth something lost or valuable. By Saturday, your senses demand satisfying – a feel-good concert or night of romance might be just the tonic.

Virgo

PICTURES: GETTY IMAGES.

AUG 24 – SEP 23 Your creative thinking is impressive. Whether it’s business brainwaves or projects closer to home, your ideas could prove to be inspired. As Venus heightens your senses, beautiful sounds and smells should lift your spirits, along with romantic books, movies and ... a good-looking visitor!

Holding things in? Pour it out to someone you trust or grab a notebook and start writing. With communicator Mercury entering your sign, casual musings could morph into novels. Adding to the buzz, Venus may conjure up a special gift – or perhaps it’s you passing something on?

Gemini

MAY 22 – JUN 21 With Venus perched high in your chart, your popularity is on the rise. Squeezing everything in mightn’t be easy, but relationships formed now alter your path. Just don’t get caught up in gossip or power plays, especially at work. Stay tuned for a surprise this weekend, including a little romance!

Libra

SEP 24 – OCT 23 Detoxes are written in the stars, for you and your home too. Cupboard clear-outs might prove profitable, while on the dietary front, new recipes could set you onto a healthier path. If gardening or composting has caught your eye, launch in this weekend.

Pisces

FEB 20 – MAR 20 The glamour’s being turned up a notch! As your chart’s social sector heats up, some stylish new evening wear or party shoes might beckon – along with a hot date or escapist holiday. As your emotional outlook improves, so too could an annoying health problem. Concentrate on good eating habits instead.

Cancer JUN 22 – JUL 23

Polite stars are giving way to passionate ones! Some couples may even find themselves entering a more feisty phase, but hey, making up can be fun. A second honeymoon might even hit the agenda, while for singles, an intense conversation could get you thinking – go with the flow.

Aries

MAR 21 – APR 20 Fresh air is like a magic elixir for you, so switch off those screens and head outside. With Mercury stimulating your chatty side, group pursuits should tick all the boxes. An impromptu getaway might materialise, while for couples, the weekend could prove romantic.

Leo

JUL 24 – AUG 23 Keen to embrace a healthier lifestyle? Celestial help is at hand! Fresh foods, drinking habits, fitness regimens ... with an eclipse reverberating, January could turn everything on its head. Organise a late-week debrief with friends, then prepare for a weekend full of energy, excitement and opinions.

Scorpio

Sagittarius

OCT 24 – NOV 22

NOV 23 – DEC 22

Throw yourself into something that gets you excited – both your health and your mood should pick up instantly. Dancing might hit the spot, along with study courses and weekends away. If you’re up for a challenge, why not master a tricky skill or learn a foreign language? You may catch someone’s eye.

If you’re feeling flat, throw in some zest! With Venus awakening your inner stylist, a revamp might lift everyone’s spirits. Try switching rooms or grab some colour charts, then reassess your clothes and accessories. Do something fun on Saturday.

The loved-up pair enjoy their downtime ahead of planning the big day.

James Middleton and his fiancée Alizee Thevenet are due to walk up the aisle this year – and what better way to prepare than a relaxing tropical getaway? James – brother of the Duchess of Cambridge – took French-born Alizee, 30, with him on the family holiday to St Barts, where they were joined by his parents Carole and Michael, as well as his sister Pippa, her husband James Matthews and their one-year-old son Arthur. But the loved-up pair also found plenty of time to be alone, holding hands and canoodling under the hot Caribbean sun. The London-based businessman, 32, who has spoken publicly about his battle with depression, says they plan to keep the nuptials “as private as possible”, but royal watchers predict Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be taking on pageboy and bridesmaid duties – and quite possibly their little brother Prince Louis will be involved too!
