Accredited training Coonara Community House is a Registered Training Organisation (no. 3733) approved to deliver training in the following Nationally Recognised Qualifications, in 2014:

Neighbourhood House, Community House or Adult Learning Centre, whatever the name, these places are the heart of the Knox community. More recently referred to as Learn Local organisations, we provide social, educational and recreational activities within a welcoming and supportive environment. There are five Learn Local organisations in Knox. Coonara Community House offers a large number of qualifications in Community Services, Children’s Services, Leisure & Health and Disability up to Diploma level. Subsidised computer classes run each term. Coonara offers workshops on gardening, cooking and getting ‘back to basics’. Short courses provide pathways to employment and build learner confidence. Other programs include a food garden, a community newspaper and many volunteering opportunities. www.coonarahouse.org.au

Computers for the timid - Featuring Intel Easy Steps 14INTCOM1234 This is a beginner’s class for those who are scared of the computer and may require a supportive environment to develop confidence. Learn to type simple documents, insert pictures and save them safely. Mondays 9.30am - 12.00pm 3rd Feb - 31st Mar (No class Labour Day) $30 tuition & $20 amenities ($10 concession) $5 materials

Learn Local funding for courses with the symbol is available to all those with Australian citizenship or permanent residency. Higher fees apply to those not in these categories.

Next Step in Computers - Featuring Intel Easy Steps 14COMSTE1234 This class is for those who have done ‘Computers for the Timid” or who have basic knowledge of the computer but would like to build on their skills and confidence. This class will still be at a basic level, but the next step on from what you have managed with plenty of support. Social Media and Digital Literacy

14DIGLIT1234 This course investigates different types of social media and gadgets you would like to explore and ways to improve your knowledge of new technologies. This course includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and apps, Pinterest, Blogging, LinkedIn and participant’s choice. 14INTCOM1234 This course is only for the fellas… sorry ladies. This is your opportunity to get a tune up on your computer skills to make use of that new computer you have been given or have purchased. This short course is designed for those aspiring beekeepers who would like to set up a hive this season. Prana meditation

Prana (a Sanskrit word) means life force or life energy. This gentle guided meditation helps to clear stagnant energy and stress .You benefit by improved mental activity, vitality, energy, relaxation and sense of peace. This meditation technique provides tools to help manage physical pain and illness and cope better with stress. It is suitable for beginners. All you need is a willingness to experience deep relaxation and wellbeing. It is not recommended if you are pregnant or under 16 yrs. Masterchef for kids

If you are 8-12 years old and have always wanted to learn to cook, this class is for you. Create yummy simple meals, slices and snacks that you can eat or take home on the day and learn the skills to be able to cook independently. Dani will show you how to make a small mushroom using wet and dry felting techniques. You are sure to enjoy the tactile and relaxing art of felting. All materials supplied. Making orange and pumpkin jam, zucchini pickle and homemade yogurt from scratch. This workshop will instil a passion for using your seasonal garden or market produce. You will learn how to preserve and store produce so that the original integrity of the food remains intact. Saturday 9.30am - 12.30pm 15th Mar $5 materials

Cheese making at home - Level 1 Feta, Mascarpone & Greek Style Yogurt Take home your own 3 products, and make and eat Ricotta on the day as well. This will be a full day course and cheese can be made using Cow, Goat or Sheep’s milk if you wish to bring your own, this will need to be pasteurized on the day. Espalier - Winter versus summer pruning of fruit trees Learn why most pruning is now done in summer, when to use winter pruning methods, how to reduce this work considerably and how to naturally care for your fruit trees. Select the right trees on dwarf rootstock for a farm, small spaces or for your espaliers. Bring your lunch. Saturday 10.00am - 4.00pm 18th Jan Cost $85

Cider, Perry & Fruit wine making workshop

Explore different methods of making Apple cider and the very popular Perry- Pear cider also apple cider vinegar. Discover cider varieties of apple or pear and how can you use what you have at home on your trees and will also look at ways to turn any kind of your excess fruit into a dessert wine. Government funds The Victorian Training Guarantee provides all eligible Victorian citizens or permanent residents with subsidised fees. To be eligible you must be upskilling - enrolling in a qualification at a higher level than any other completed qualifications that you hold. Students under 20 years of age are exempted.

House membership 2014

Only $20 per year. Members receive discounts on recreational courses and childcare fees as well as free events several times a year. This group meets at Coonara Community House on the first Thursday of the month from 2.00pm – 3.30pm. Term 1 dates: 6th Feb - Propagation sharing - bring your seeds and cuttings to swap and share. 6th Mar - Bees in your garden, attracting them and keeping them.

Training senior volunteers for our community

Coonara has been funded under the Productive Ageing Through Community Education project to provide free accredited training for people aged 60 years plus to increase their skills as volunteers in the aged care, disability and community sectors. The Knox Houses offer a monthly Friday night free social event on the third Friday of the month in rotation. The term 1 Coonara event will be Friday March 21st picnic under the stars. Please ring and let us know you’re coming (9758 7081).

Enrolments in Coonara courses are confirmed by payment of course fees or the arrangement of a payment plan. Coonara accepts EFTPOS, credit cards, cheque, cash and direct debit payments In person between 9.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday at 22 Willow Rd Upper Ferntree Gully Over the phone using credit card 9.00am 4.00pm Monday to Friday on 97587081 By posting a cheque to Coonara Community House P.O. Box 7041 Upper Ferntree Gully 3156. Please include a note with your contact details and the course you have chosen. Refunds & concessions Courses require minimum numbers to proceed. If we cancel a class you will receive a full refund. If you withdraw from a class at least 48 hours prior to the commencement you will receive a refund less a $10 administration fee. Within 48 hours of the class commencement no refund can be given. Concession fees apply to some courses for those on pensions and health care cards. The refund policy for accredited training differs from the above and is advertised on the enrolment form and our website. 12
