my initial target was to create a solid building, almost NON a building, like a timeless jerusalem stone, as a reminder of the timeless city and an ancient jewish faith. i wanted to create an impact of carved spaces in the mass and not traditional rooms. some religious aspects affected the building^ separation b’ holy and secular activities during saturdays and the high holiday. prohibition from activating any kind of electric equipment during shabbos/ saturdays with an option for using preprogrammed and automatic equipment. separation b’ man and women during the prayer. prevention of distracting view during the torah reading. beside these, i tried to create a building that is a part of an urban tissue in the existing city, leaving the whole ground floor for the public, with access from all 3 free facades.
