Letter From The Editor Hi my name is Cooper Peach and thank you for reading issue one of my Zine about fly fishing. While reading this you will learn about the importance of fly fishing, and all about fly fishing. You will get to hear from a pro fly fisherman Mark Beattie. I chose to write about fly fishing for many reasons but mainly because ever since I was a kid my dad has brought us out to montana for part of the summer. In Montana one of my favorite things to do is fly fish.

What is Fly Fishing Fly fishing is a very complicated way to fish, there are so many different factors that play into the set up.
Fly fishing is different from many other types of fishing It's not just to catch fish but it’s an art form. Fly Fishing is a type of fishing mainly meant for fun. Fly fishing is done by casting with a fairly long pole with a line and a fly on the end of that line. Most people would say this type of fishing is way more fun because instead of throwing out a line and then reeling it in you get to watch the fish swim up to the fly and will jump out of the water to grab the fly.

All About Lines The first aspect to Fly Fishing is the type of line you use which is surprisingly a very complicated task. You can’t just use some random rope you have because the fish would be able to see this random looking rope with a fly on it. The fly fishing line is very light compared to other types of fishing. Lines come in weights ranging from 1-14 1 being the lightest 14 being the heaviest. The weight of the line all depends on what type of fish you use, you can refer to the chart for what type of line would be best for you. There are three main differences between lines other than weights, Floating Fly lines, Sinking Fly lines, and Sinking Tip Fly lines. Floating Fly Lines are the most common type of line, which is exactly what it sounds like it floats on top of the water. Sinking lines surprise they sink, but sinking tip line half of it sinks and the other half floats.

All About the Reel and Rod The second component of Fly Fishing is the rod and reel. Reels are meant to hold and store line while you're fishing to let you cast with so you can get the fly far away. Fly fishing reels are all mostly the same with some slight differences. Most fly reels have numbers 1 through 5 which helps you know what weight your reel can handle. Fly rods on the other hand are more complicated. Most fly rods are anywhere from 8 to 9 feet long, and are made of out either graphite, fiberglass, or bamboo. Even if you change the smallest thing it can either make your fishing way better or way worse. Too small of a pole and it wont bend the right way and too large of a pole will bend too much.

All About Flies
The last main component to fly fishing which is probably the most complicated part is the fly. There are 3 main types of flies, dry flies, nymphs, and streamers.Dry flies are fished on or at the surface of water and typically imitate adult or emerging insects like mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, midges, grasshoppers, and damselflies. Dry flies float on top of the water and are very fun to watch because fish will jump out of the water to grab this one. Wet Flies sit just under the surface and mimic what a fly being submerged in water would look like.Wet flies are fished below the surface, and are tied to imitate things like pupal- and nymph-stage aquatic insects, scuds (freshwater shrimp), fish eggs, worms, and crayfish.Streamers are larger wet flies tied to imitate baitfish, leeches, crayfish, and other small animals. Streamers are typically fished like lures

Mark Beattie Pro Fisheran Mark is the greatest Fly Fisherman I have ever met so when I had the chance to do a project on something we enjoy the first thing that came to mind was Fly Fishing, and I thought who better to interview than Mark Beattie. When I asked Mark what got him into Fly Fishing he said his dad and his grandpa were the main two people who got him into it and that they would go on family trips and vacations to Bull Lake in Wyoming. I asked Mark why he Fly Fishes and his answer was different than most people's answers, most people say for the enjoyment of catching the fish. Mark has been Fly Fishing for so long and with such dedication that he says it’s almost a sign of religion to him, that it’s like a church he is a part of with a god that created this amazing thing such as Fly Fishing. I then asked him what his favorite part about Fly Fishing is and he said the disconnect from the rest of the world, you don’t have to worry about checking your phone or being on phone calls because most of the time there is no service so you can’t check your phone even if you wanted to. Some of Mark’s favorite places to Fly Fish are Bull Lake Wyoming, North Flatt Wyoming, and in New Zealand. His favorite type of dry fly is a Royal Trude and a Royal Wolf. His favorite style of Fly Fishing is using dry fly. I asked Mark what he thought the hardest part of Fly Fishing was and he said patience, people want to just go out and catch a fish right away but sometimes it takes lots of patience. Finally I asked Mark what advice he would give to new Fly Fishermen, and he said master casting not just learn how to cast but master it because once you get that part down it makes the rest of Fly Fishing much easier.
