Staff members work as a team, providing in-home personal care and on-site adult day care, plus they serve as a community lunch site, run fitness classes, prepare and deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors and provide telephone reassurance services. All full- and part-time employees are eligible to participate in a Simple Individual Retirement Account, plus they get jury duty leave, bereavement, longevity and personal/ sick time. The center also runs the county’s only fitness facility, which is open to the public; seniors can take Zumba, tap and yoga classes and perform “The Nutcracker” at Christmas. Employees are missiondriven, kind to each other and say they are treated as well as the clients they serve, Vear said. “Every day is different; we all genuinely care about each other,” Vear said. “Our big mission is to keep people at home. We provide them with dignity and allow them to stay at home. It makes for a better life. We fulfill a purpose.”

Home Instead Senior Care No. 3

Last year, a caregiver working for the Birmingham franchise of Home Instead Senior Care contacted the inhome personal care and companionship agency in Birmingham and suggested it create a personalized check list and journal for each patient. Now each client has a plan of care record created by the office staff and nurse so caregivers know the likes and dislikes of each patient. It can include instructions for cleaning a special throw rug to how to pet a dog or make spaghetti sauce. “We listen to our employees. We take ideas here,” said General Manager Bert Copple. “There are no walls.” Another caregiver suggest-

ed staff training. As a result, Home Instead launched a paid skills development training program to help caregivers attain state certification as home health aides. Copple said he continuously looks for ways to keep the staff happy. The agency offers paid vacations, recognizes caregivers at celebrations twice a year, hold awards dinners and rewards employees for going above and beyond the job with points they can accumulate to use to shop online.
