BY ALEX PURCELL A PROPOSED social housing development for Cooroy, reported in the last edition of the Cooroy Rag, has gained national attention. In the 15 June edition, applicant and Eco Cottages Director, Greg Phipps, called for support from Noosa Council and the communi-
ty for the proposed development of 33 not-for-profit modular units on Carpenters Road in Cooroy to provide housing for single women over 50, victims of domestic violence and affordable worker accommodation. The story was shared widely on social media and Greg said it attracted national attention.
“The story certainly generated some interest! I’ve been interviewed by ABC News and was live on Channel 10’s Morning Show the other week.” “I’ve also had people calling me from Melbourne and all over the state and it’s all thanks to the story in the Cooroy Rag.” Greg was also pleased by the
positive response that the story received on social media, with many of the local community supporting the proposed development. “I’m really happy. It’s been so positive. I think it is great.” Greg said he is now focussing on getting the documentation and requirements that Council needs
for the application and is asking the community to show their support in the meantime by writing letters to Noosa Council or Eco Cottages. See the community’s say on the proposed development on page 12.

From your editor’s desk Cooroy Rag editor, Alex Purcell
HELLO from the Riverina in New South Wales. One of the things I love about Cooroy, where I grew up, and Pomona, where I have lived for the past 14 years, is the community. Community is what makes a town and is one of the reasons that we travel each year to a small rural village, in the centre of the Riverina district. Every Queen's Birthday Long Weekend in June (a NSW public holiday), the tiny town of Caragabal hosts a camp oven cook-off. With only a pub, school, hall and several houses in the town, the community is spread out to include the neighbouring farms and stations that make up the locality - and the camp oven cook-off is their once-ayear opportunity to come together and it raises muchneeded funds for the upkeep of the hall. Caravans are dragged in and set up around the edge of Caragabal’s sports ground, where a pile of dead trees as long as a cricket pitch and as high as a singlestory house, sits in the middle ready to be lit. Preparations begin on Saturday for a jam-packed Sunday with games, stalls, live music and of course, the cooking competition. Sibling and neighbourly rivalry are tested during the tug-of-war, spectators duck as gumboots fly overhead for the gumboot toss, and kids race to start a fire and boil water in the billy boiling competition. At 5 pm, camp ovens that have been smouldering for hours over hot coals, are opened. The steam curls away in the cold air, to reveal culinary delights - some most unimaginable - to be served to the judges in the bid to be crowned as winner of the Camp Oven Cookoff and receive bragging rights. From stews to seafood pasta, lasagnas, tacos and even cheesecakes, the panel of judges have the hard task and very full bellies in order to choose a winner. Meanwhile, the fire is lit and tired cooks and the community gather around to chat before the live music begins and goes late into the night. It is a fabulous weekend and at the end, the vans are rolled out and the community goes back to their farms, their jobs and their lives for another year.

From the Archives BEATING the King of the Mountain clock was forgotten for two contestants who came to the aid of a fellow competitor in 2001. David Curtain’s legs “were buckling under him” after the gruelling race up and down Mount Cooroora when fellow contestants Karl Higgins and Corella Edwards, the fastest woman challenger the year before, came to his assistance “almost carrying him across the finish line”. David, from Brisbane, was making his first KOM attempt in the veterans’ category when he collapsed. Ambulance officers were on hand to “administer oxygen to aid his recovery”. Unit development proposed for Pomona A GROUP of Pomona residents are upset that a proposed residential development is not open to community consultation. However, the town planner says this is not required. Pace Planning Principal Town Planner, Brooke Wildin, said that the proposed development for 20 units and 38 car parking spaces at 11C Church Street is using the land according to code and therefore does not require public notification that is only applicable to impact assessment applications. “The land is zoned medium density under the Noosa Plan 2020. Multiple dwellings are a consistent use for the medium density zone and the application is therefore code assessable. “Consistent uses are what Council will support in a particular zone, so no public notification is required for code assessment for this reason." But Pomona Community Advocacy and Action Advocate and local resident, Nick Cooke, said that they feel like they’ve been “shut out”. “A lot of residents are angry. They feel like they’ve been shut out.” After discovering the development wasn’t impact
accessible, Nick said that he organised a public meeting at the Lawson Shed. “We had 30-40 residents turn up at the meeting and Brooke and her husband Andy Snedden (Pace Planning Senior Environmental Scientist) came to answer questions.” Brooke said that she fielded calls from the floor and was able to provide more information about the development. “There are no high rises proposed, despite the community thinking it's a ‘high density’ development. “The designs are low set and ‘adaptive’, meaning it allows equitable access to persons who are disabled or aging, meaning people in the community will have the option to transition from big homes into something smaller.” Brooke said other benefits of the development include upgrading the road frontage with curb, channelling and footpaths, riparian revegetation, and new native landscaping, together with rehabilitation plans for the waterway. “The development has been modelled using Council’s flood modelling with their specialists. Because there is no curb and chan-
nelling on Red Street, the development will capture and manage stormwater to pull it away and improve the flow into the creek,” Brooke said. Nick said that Brooke “explained a lot” at the meeting, including revealing new information about the development, something that left residents “angry”. “I think people left a little more angry because new information came out about the development. “They’re going to have to increase Church Street to 4m wide to accommodate the development. Drainage is an issue. The area was assessed on a low annual rainfall. Earlier this year we had 1500mm of rain in Pomona in three days. “The site also has a biodiversity, waterways and wetlands overlay, koala priority habitat overlay, moderate to severe bushfire hazard overlay, moderate to severe flood hazard overlay and moderate to severe landslide hazard overlay. In no way is it suitable for such a development,” Nick said. Noosa Council has requested an information request response from Pace Planning. “This is a normal part of development application as-

sessment. Council information requests are part of the assessment to tidy up the final design for approval. “We are also providing the concept operational works of street frontage upgrades and stormwater designs. “Once we get our information request response back
to Council, it will be available via Council’s website and Council has 35 days to make a decision and release its decision with the approved plan. Council can still request further information if needed," Brooke said. Nick said that because Council doesn’t have to con-
sult the community over this proposed development, he is creating an online petition to “do it for them”. “We know it is not impact assessed, and Council doesn’t have to do a community consultation, so we are going to create an online petition and do it for them.”

NOOSA Council and the community are now waiting for the final decision of the Planning and Environment Court relating to the Kin Kin Quarry. After the closing submissions were heard on June 17, His Honour, Judge Long SC, reserved his decision. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart thanked Hinterland residents and those who gave evidence during the hearing and said that Council will continue to stand with the community on this matter. “Given what the community continues to live through, we all want a quick decision on this matter. But given the complexity of the legal ar-
guments and large volume of material, we understand it may take some time for the decision to be handed down.” “Extensive evidence was put forward by Council from residents, Council employees, a town planning expert and a traffic safety expert. Our legal team has done an exceptional job arguing our community’s case, and now the outcome is in the hands of the court.” “The CEO and Council staff will continue to monitor the operations of Cordwell Resources to ensure they are complying with the Quarry Management Plan,” she said.
Noosa Council CEO, Scott Waters, said Council remains committed to working with the community on the matter. “We have invested considerable resources into this legal case and, like the impacted community, hope for a favourable outcome from His Honour.” Members of the Save the Noosa Hinterland community group were present at the hearing. “We were overwhelmed with the support shown by the Hinterland community who came out in force and completely filled the courtroom,” the group said.

IT has been 12 months since the Cooroy Rag broke the news that supermarket giant, Woolworths, had purchased land in Cooroy. Since then, the Rag has contacted Woolworths on a regular basis asking for updates in order to provide the community with information only to be advised there is no new information available. Woolworths was expected to start community consultation in August last year by
meeting with local residents and community groups, holding pop-up information stands and creating a dedicated project website and access to the project team via phone and email channels. But a date is still yet to be set. Woolworths purchased the 6.6ha block at 125 Myall Street, Cooroy in May 2021 with the vision to “create a high-quality shopping and community destination”
including a full-line supermarket with drive-through and pick-up facilities, specialty retail, car parking and further other uses, depending on needs that would be informed by community consultation and planning codes. The Cooroy Rag will continue to check in with Woolworths and as soon as news is available, we will publish it in your local community newspaper.

New president for CCC THE Cooroy Chamber of Commerce has welcomed a new president. At the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting recently, attendees congratulated the outgoing president, Chris Bell for his achievements and welcomed the incoming president, Sirah Robb. Sirah is best known as the owner of Wythes Real Estate in Cooroy and Doonan. A former Cooroy Chamber of Commerce Executive, Sirah said that she is honoured to be elected to the position of President. “If I’m going to do something, I’m going to give it my all and do it well. With the support of the Executive and the combined wisdom and skill in the group, I plan on helping our members get their business to where they want them to be.” Sirah said that her plans for the Chamber include collaborating with member businesses to identify what is important to them from their Executive, what are their goals and challenges are and how the Chamber can help them thrive; increasing memberships by 160-200 members in the first year and regular networking nights including guest speakers to help businesses excel and build a community of “switched-on” business leaders.

$5000 raised for Cooroy boy A FUNDRAISER for a Cooroy boy burned by boiling water has raised more than $5000. Six-year-old Blake Gamble sustained serious burns to his face and body when he accidentally pulled a cupboard, on which a kettle full of boiling water was sitting, down on top of himself at his home in Black Mountain in May. A Go Fund Me set up for his benefit has since raised more than the initial goal. Nearly $5200 has been donated by the community to support Blake and his family during his recovery.

NOOSA COUNCIL has adopted its 2022-23 budget. The record $160 million budget centres on roads and bridges with $22.3 million, $7.8 million for waste management, resource recovery and environment initiatives and $2.3 million for parks and pathways. The minimum general rate will increase by five per cent and all levies have returned to pre-pandemic levels, with the Environment Levy now at $70 and the Heritage Levy at $10. Mayor Clare Stewart said balancing the budget has been “challenging” and “difficult” given a six per cent increase in inflation across south-east Queensland. “Like any household budget, we are not immune to the surging construction and fuel costs as well as the rising cost-of-living pressures.” “Significant land valuation increases have also had an impact.” Cr Stewart said that Council had deliberately adopted a measured approach to deal with the significant jump in land valua-
tions to ease the burden where possible. “We have reduced an on average 36 per cent valuation increase to much more sustainable levels for property rates, to lessen the impact on the hip pocket.” The minimum general rate increase of five per cent is lower than the south-east Queensland CPI. The standard household bin collection charge will also increase by five per cent to allow Council to deliver a new landfill, improve resource recovery through potential landfill-to-gas options and other waste diversion improvements. “I want to ensure frontline services like parks, roads, libraries and waste transfer facilities are improved,” Cr Stewart said. Cr Stewart said that once waste charges and levies are included, for the average Noosa ratepayer, the total rates bill increase equals about $1.53 per week. “We have endeavoured to provide some relief to cost-of-living pressures where we can and have listened to the community
during our budget engagement process. It’s been a triple whammy with increased land valuations, the February floods and recovering from COVID-19 creating enormous challenges in drafting this budget. “It’s important we continue to lay the foundations to see our shire revive, thrive and recover from the recent natural disasters through prudent financial management,” Cr Stewart said. Council’s $42 million capital works program will see $17 million directed toward road and transport infrastructure work with $5.3 million allocated to resealing many of the Shire’s roads Over 40 per cent of the reseal funding is directed at Hinterland roads. “We have focussed more on our roads and infrastructure to ensure safety and keep our assets at a level the community expects. There has been a historical underspend on many roads, and we need to and are addressing that.” Protecting the environment has
also been invested in by boosting environmental grants by almost $100,000. “The Environment Levy is back to pre-pandemic levels of $70 to ensure we can continue to invest in future projects,” Cr Stewart said. Investing in business and boosting economic growth is another focus of the 2022/23 Budget. “Feedback from the Liveability Survey made it quite clear that residents rated protecting our natural environment, neighbourhood safety, and the importance of local business, as three key priorities and that’s been our focus in shaping this budget.” “This budget has a renewed focus on rebuilding a strong foundation for the future, helping boost the economy while continuing to support our community through its post-pandemic recovery,” Cr Stewart said. Cr Stewart said support for the more vulnerable in our community would continue through Council’s Hardship Policy and Pensioner Rebate.

WATER usage and sewerage access charges for Noosa households will increase by two per cent. Unitywater announced its pricing for 202223, with usage charges locked in for the eighth year in a row. The increase of two per cent on water and sewerage access charges means that the average Noosa household (based upon 375 litres per day)
will pay an extra $7.42 each quarterly bill, which includes the State Government Bulk Water increase of $2.40. Unitywater Acting CEO, Pauline Thomson, said the increase would cover upgrades to essential water and sewerage infrastructure. “We’ve committed more than $1 billion over the next five years to continue providing
reliable services to the communities we serve. “We’ve worked hard to keep the increase as low as possible and at an annual increase of two per cent, it’s less than CPI. Our usage charges have remained the same since 2014-15. Ms Thomson said Unitywater’s Customer Care Program was always available.
“We know it’s been a tough couple of years and if any of our customers are struggling to pay their bill, we encourage them to contact us as soon as possible so that we can help them – we have payment plans and other support available.” The 2022-23 prices come into effect on 1 July 2022 and full details can be found at www.unitywater.com/pricing

ARE HERE TO ADVISE AND ASSIST YOU WITH... Call him King of the Mountain…In 2009, Neil Labinsky broke the course record in a blistering time of 22:43, a record that still stands today.
FOR nearly two decades it was not known that Pomona’s annual mountain race had inspired an international hit song. In fact, many locals still don’t know that King of the Mountain by the Aussie Rock Band Midnight Oil is in fact about the race up Mount Cooroora. Almost 20 years after it was released, it was through official correspondence with the band’s management that the Noosa Shire Museum confirmed that the KOM race was the inspiration for the song. The Noosa Shire Museum
said the Management Committee wrote to the band, seeking clarification. “We got the information from Rob Hirst, one of the founding members of the band, probably best known for his incredible talents as the band’s drummer.” In his reply, Rob wrote: “King of the Mountain was inspired by the footrace up Mount Cooroora in South-East Queensland, and the incredible natural beauty and unique history of the Noosa Hinterland. It is not a reference to motor racing at Mount Panorama, Bathurst.”
For many years it was believed the song was paying homage to racing legend Peter Brock, nine times winner of the Bathurst 1000. “Something just didn’t ring true for the song to have a Mount Panorama and Brock inspiration, because the lyrics refer to a ‘sugar cane stopped at the railway crossing’ and Bathurst is too far south to grow sugar cane,” the Noosa Shire Museum said. This year’s King of the Mountain race is on 24 July. See our KOM special liftout on pages 23 and 24.

Labrador saves injured man
Working for Noosa Communities
Extract 1: Side Road ≥50km/h
A RE-HOMED labrador is being treated like royalty after alerting her owner to a man who was injured. Owner, Susan Ford, said that the man, who was staying in a cabin on her Kandanga property, had fallen over and was lying injured in the mud. “On this day, I had come home and parked around the front of my house because the ground was so wet. Fatso [the labrador] was sitting there, barking madly. I let her out and she went off barking again. I followed her and she led me over to the gentleman who was staying in my cabin, had fallen over trying to get into his car and was lying in the mud.” The man had broken his tibia and fibula, and would later be transported to a hospital in Brisbane. “Fatso sat beside him, licking him, while we waited for the ambulance. She knew just what to do. Because I had parked out the front of my house and the cabin is at the rear of my property, had it not been for Fatso I would never have known that he was there, lying in the mud, injured.” “She’s now walking around the house like a princess.”

New no-tech play area at Cooroy Hotel
No fee for GCU customers at Pomona ATM A LOCAL community bank is reminding their customers there is no withdrawal fee when using the ATMX machine in Pomona. Gympie Credit Union has been providing customer-owned banking services to the region for over 50 years and while there is a $1.50 enquiry fee, customers do not get charged when withdrawing cash from the ATMX machine located at Pomona Newsagency. Gympie Credit Union Chief Customer Officer, Craig Armstrong, said they feel it is important to remind customers of this service after being approached by a concerned citizen in Pomona. “The concerned customer raised the issue of being charged when using ATMs
A NEW no-tech kid's play area at Cooroy Hotel has been embraced by the community. Project Manager, Megan Mason, said photos from the recent soft launch, shared on social media, went viral. "We got hundreds of engagements and so many positive comments. People overwhelmingly love the idea." Megan said the new play area is a play-based, interactive space.
"We've got rid of the electronic games and skill testers. I come from an educational background and have a personal gripe about electronic games. When kids stand behind each other waiting for a game it defeats the purpose of the play space.” "This new play space encourages collaborative play. It is focused on imagination with play-based toys such as giant wooden dominos, a dress-up corner, a timber
train set, books, and a farm shop with wooden fruit and baskets.” "The whole space has been transformed. There is even a mural of the Mary Valley on the wall. Our key elements are in line with the adventure playground in Cooroy, so our touch points are congruent with the park. We've created a space where kids can play and play together using their imagination." The redeveloped kid's play area is just the beginning of
grand plans for the Cooroy Hotel. "We're doing lots of stuff in the hotel. We are changing it into more of a country hotel by focussing on going back to grassroots, back to sustainability through an edible garden down the side of the hotel, with a paddock to plate ethos, including recycling and managing resources coupled with old-fashioned hospitality. "The kid's room is just the beginning."
and we want to remind our customers that there is no fee when withdrawing from the ATMX machine in Memorial Avenue, Pomona. “While there is an enquiry fee, we suggest taking advantage of our online banking to check account balances. “We are committed to personal service, public spirit and the highest levels of trust and integrity, helping individuals, families and businesses grow and prosper.” Gympie Credit Union is a community bank with over $100,000 in operational spending going towards sponsorships in the community each year. The Gympie Branch is located across the road from the Gympie RSL.
Happy 21st Cooroy Produce COOROY Produce store is celebrating a milestone its 21st birthday. Owner, Dave Yabsley, said that they are celebrating through business as usual. “We’re heading into cooler weather and with that brings the gas refills, warm dog coats and plenty of hay and chaff now
the grass has stopped growing. “We do a lot of gas refills for barbeques and gas heaters.” For all winter pet needs and gas refills, see Dave and the team at Cooroy Produce, 2 Garnet Street, Cooroy, and wish them a happy 21st birthday.

Bendigo helps keep race on track BENDIGO Bank staff will be “flat out” at this year’s King of the Mountain event but in town, not up the mountain. As sponsors of the main race, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge, Bendigo Bank Branch Staff and Community Bank Directors will be in Pomona to present medals, hand out water and provide gift bags to competitors. Local Community Bank Chairperson, Trish Radge, said KOM is a highlight in their event calendar. “The whole day is loads of fun, and the participants are inspirational. I can climb the mountain in 45 minutes but that just gets me to the top. To watch the runners come tearing down the hill with the winner over the line in 27 minutes is incredible.” Since 2010, Bendigo Bank has been supporting King of the Mountain and this year, the Community

public housing. Low, medium and high density residential zones are flagged as needing to be preserved predominantly for residents, not STA businesses. Council-owned land near the cemetery on Lake MacDonald Drive is proposed to be investigated for social housing. Investigations into tiny homes being sited on council-owned, community-owned or church-owned land or in relocatable home parks are recommended. Secondary dwellings are proposed to house second, unrelated households without the need for subdivision. It’s recommended that social housing should not be situated away from services and public transport, nor pushed onto fire/flood-
prone land or industrial estates where the clash of expectations and uses would be to the detriment of residents and businesses. Studio living in industrial areas will be considered. Council’s strategic planning staff advised the number of people that could be housed by the proposals in the strategy amounted to “hundreds, not thousands” and would not drastically increase Noosa’s modest population growth targets, nor overload the road network. The intention is to help improve housing opportunities for many already living here. It’s expected confidential amendments will be drafted in July, then sent to the State for approval with public consultation to occur around October/November.

NOOSA Council will help create more social, public and affordable housing through planning changes, advocacy and partnerships with the State, not-for-profit and private sectors, but will not become a public housing provider. This is the approach proposed in the draft Housing Strategy, available online now and open for feedback from July 10 for four weeks. High buyer demand, conversion of homes into short-term accommodation businesses, and cost of living hikes, have all helped to create the housing availability and affordability crisis here and across the nation. The draft recommends mandating and encouraging new unit developments to contain a portion of social/

A PROPOSED social housing development for Cooroy has received a positive response from the community. News of Cooroy business, Eco Cottages’ proposed 33 tiny homes for Carpenters Road to provide housing for single women over 50, victims of domestic violence and affordable worker accommodation has been supported by many in the community. When the Cooroy Rag story (page 3, 15 June 2022) outlining the proposed development was shared on the Cooroy Community Noticeboard Facebook group, the article attracted almost 100 comments with a majority of those positive. Here are some of the comments of what the community had to say: Sherryl Gary Davis said, “Fantastic idea. There are so many people out there with no place to call home. But the charities that buy them need to be realistic
with rent and Eco Cottages would have to sell to charities at a price that they can afford and not make a huge profit from them.” Donna Maree said, “Great idea Greg. I hope the community gets behind you with their support. The current rental crisis on the Sunshine Coast is causing havoc for individuals and families alike. You get my thumbs up.” Pamela Leitner - Irwin said, “They certainly need something like this. Too many people are homeless due to high rents.” Nicole Wellington said, “Great idea. There’s so many people struggling and homeless at the moment. Anything we can do to help, I’m all for. Yes, from me!” Wendy Schlink said, “I suggest some are also built for anybody who desperately needs accommodation.” Maxwell Blackburn said, “Great idea. I put my hand up being one who is having

nowhere to lay my head except with family where it is already overcrowded. I am very interested.” Sharon Court said, “Would be a GREAT idea, if the rent stays under $150 a week, puts homeless in first, and has some units that can cater to families. It will also create work in the area and they will pay for themselves through the rent.” Lorna Gardini said, “I think it’s a kind thought, but how is this idea going to benefit Cooroy?” Rob Neely said, “The man should be applauded for his vision.” Diane Carpenter said, “I think that is a wonderful idea. If there is anything we need, it is houses for the needy.” Andrea Mani Risby-Jones said, “Great to see help for this needy demographic. Certainly!” What do you think? Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien IN a world where democracies are fading, exercising our democratic right to vote has never been more critical. This year, more autocratic than democratic states exist globally for the first time since 2004. We are lucky to live in a free country where we have the right to choose our local representative, enjoy freedom of speech, and change government when we wish. While some were disappointed with the result of the Federal Election, we must remember that this was democracy in action. An election would mean nothing if the results were rigged or pre-determined. But in an environment where 18 Liberal seats were lost, I am truly humbled that Wide Bay elected me to serve them for a third term. Despite windy, rainy weather on polling day, the people of Wide Bay exercised their democratic right to vote in good spirit.
Everyone I met, including the booth volunteers from all parties, the people coming out to vote, and the Australian Electoral Commission Staff, conducted themselves in a friendly, respectful and professional way. It was a six-week-long election campaign, and we waited another four weeks for the Australian Electoral Commission to declare officially the Wide Bay Electorate on June 21. Putting your hand up as a candidate takes a lot of courage, osts a lot of money and rightly invites a lot of scrutiny, and I acknowledge the nine other candidates who ran in Wide Bay at this election. We wouldn't have achieved the strong LNP result in Wide Bay without our friends and volunteers. Thank you to everyone involved - whether through helping my campaign or other candidates' campaigns - your genuine participation contributes to the health of the democrat-
ic process. The new government is still in the process of establishing itself and its programs, and I wish them well. I have always put Wide Bay first and foremost in everything I do, and will work with the Government to create new opportunities in Wide Bay and ensure our voice is heard in the Australian Parliament. I am honoured, humbled and grateful for the support that I have received from many people and will continue to work with constituents, businesses, community, sporting and service groups to build a better Wide Bay. Our nation faces many challenges, particularly on the international landscape, and the new Labor Government is already being tested. Unlike Russia, China or the 70 other autocracies (many being developing nations), Australia must continue to protect our right to choose.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton THE Queensland State Budget was handed down last month by Treasurer, Cameron Dick MP. I’m thankful that we have received record-level funding across the Nicklin electorate, including $11.7 million for school infrastructure such as a new hall and refurbishing classrooms at Noosa District State High. Earlier this year the Community Support and Services Committee, of which I’m a member, recommended that the Government increase the base level of funding to neighbourhood and community centres. I’m pleased to say the government has listened and delivered on the recommendation of increasing base funding
from $124,000 to $230,000 per annum, resulting in an extra $106,000 per year! This additional funding allows centres to hire new staff, buy equipment, deliver additional services and support for people who need it most – including those experiencing domestic and family violence, social isolation and loneliness, homelessness, and financial stress. For vulnerable people in our community, this support can be life-changing. We’re putting the health of Queenslanders first and foremost with our record investment in health of $23.6 billion. We're supporting our frontline heroes to get their jobs done by delivering three new hospitals, a
new Queensland Cancer Centre, 11 hospital expansion projects across Queensland, with 2,200 new beds, new doctors, and nurses. This funding includes $1.64 billion over five years to improve mental health and wellbeing and combat substance abuse,. It represents the single largest investment in Mental Health in our state’s history. The focus will be on rehabilitation care, additional community care units, adolescent day programs and Step-Up Step-Down services to help people transition out of our hospital system or avoid it in the first instance altogether. Muso jams at the Apo a hit
THE new lunchtime seniors muso jam at the Apollonian Hotel is a hit. Host, Cooroy local, Trev Simpson, said that he was overwhelmed with the response. “Our first jam was last month and we had so many talented musicians come. It was a great day. Everyone enjoyed playing or listening to music and having a delicious pub lunch.” Trev is also hosting the fortnightly Friday night muso jam at the Apollonian and said that the talent of the musicians is mind blowing. “We had a great bunch of musos attend the Friday night muso jam and the ‘wow factor’ in that room
was amazing.” Trev said that playing solo in front of people can be hard and that’s why joining in a muso jam is a great way to ease into performing and help get over those fears. “We know that repetition improves performance, as you relax and have fun, so a muso jam is just perfect for this. “We also offer the opportunity to play in a fair dinkum beautiful old-world music hall hotel that was built in the 1870s in the Gympie Gold rush days and moved to Boreen Point in the 1980s, being plonked down there just for us to play in. Pomona King of the Mountain Event JULY 24TH 2022

POMONA GEARS UP FOR BENDIGO BANK INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE AS Pomona prepares for the 43rd annual King of the Mountain race, this year’s major event, the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge and its associated Radio Zinc 96 Prince and Princess races have undergone a renewal. With a new start location for 2022 and a different path up Mount Cooroora, the annual race to the top and back will be more difficult and will set new records, but not necessarily shorter times. King of the Mountain Chairperson, Heather Manders, said that organisers do not know what the new race benchmark time would be for the male and female runners taking part over a longer distance. “Whoever wins, it will be the new race record,” she said. Last year, the Bendigo Bank Mountain Challenge was won for the men by Jorge Hernaez Navarro in a time of 27min.11secs. Pomona State School Teacher, Leslie Saunders, ran to the finish line to loud cheers from the crowd to clinch her third title as Mountain Queen and the first Masters female to claim the Queen title in a time of 33:04.
The new race route is due to changes required by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service in order to protect the mountain after severe erosion. King of the Mountain runners and the general public are no longer able to use the trail between the base of the mountain and where the metal stairs start. For racers familiar with the old course, the new course is tougher still. The Mountain Challenge is now 5.2km in length and incorporates a 390m vertical ascent. The new start point is Hospital Street at the top of Stan Topper Park. This road will be closed during the event. To the tune of King of the Mountain by the legendary band, Midnight Oil, 100 competitors will parade before an expected crowd on Sunday 24 July, before bunching under the starter’s gun to tackle the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge and junior races. Entries for the King of the Mountain Race close on 17 July. Entrants this year so far include multiple-time King Mark Bourne, 2019 King Boaz Clark, and defending King, Jorge Navarro. This should ensure plenty of speed up front. Pomona local, Coe Vines,
will also be returning to run the mountain this year for the 26th time, taking him to the most consecutive runs, and surpassing Norm Harwood's 25 runs, which was set in 2015. In 1958, local footballer and railway porter, Bruce Samuels, ran to the top of Mt Cooroora as a hangover cure. He had a competitor run with him a year later, and the mountain race legend had begun. Forty-three years later and the King of the Mountain remains Australia’s premier mountain footrace. After scaling back the annual event last year due to ongoing restrictions, King of the Mountain Chairperson, Heather Manders, said that Pomona is buzzing with anticipation for this year. “We are very lucky that Bendigo Bank Cooroy and Zinc 96, our major sponsors, have stuck with us, and we are grateful to Noosa Council for our event funding, which allows us to put on this wonderful community event. We would also like to acknowledge our local business sponsors for supporting the other event attractions.” Join the fun in Pomona on Sunday 24 July.

A DOCUMENTARY by a local filmmaker about the King of the Mountain race will premier at The Majestic Theatre on race day. Still Running is a one-hour documentary that tells the story of Pomona’s legendary KOM race, from its humble beginnings in the 1950s through to the festival that changed the Hinterland town forever. The documentary follows the journey of the competitors, who dare to tackle Mount Cooroora, and discovers why this mountain continues to inspire, and how the community comes together to keep this race running. Local film maker, Jacob Schiotz, said he attended his first King of the Mountain festival in 2015 and was immediately drawn to the spirit of the event. “I’d heard about this crazy race and I just went along for a look. Before I knew it, I was leaning over the barriers and cheering all the runners with everyone else. It was really emotional.” “I kept coming back every year. I was fascinated by the overwhelming sense of
community and passion. It was a story I felt compelled to tell.” Jacob got in contact with the King of the Mountain Committee and with support from the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club, production began in 2019, only to be delayed until 2021. “We were just gearing up to start filming with competitors in the 2020 race when everything was cancelled. It was touch and go if the film would even keep going, and for a while, it felt like it was touch and go for the race as well,” Jacob said. But in 2021 the race and production started up again. KOM Race Director, Dan King, said the community was ready for the race to come back and they found a way to make it work. “This is an event for the community, organised by the community, and held in a community that cherishes the importance of local contribution. 2021 turned out to be a great event and we were lucky to have the documentary crew there to capture it.” With help from the Noosa
Museum, Jacob has also digitalised countless hours of archival footage to help re-live the rich history of the event. “I had no idea there was so much to discover. It’s been amazing – I can’t wait to share the film,” Jacob said. Still Running premieres at the Majestic Theatre on race day, Sunday 24 July 2022.

SMARTPUPS are looking for puppy foster families. The not-for-profit charity is looking for foster families to help them provide well-socialised and fully-qualified assistance dogs for children and veterans with special needs. Smartpups Operations Assistant, Chloe Driver, said that fostering a Smartpups puppy is immensely fulfilling. “As an integral part of our organisation, our Smartpups
foster families get to experience the joy and delight of seeing a pup grow from a little ‘ball of fluff’ into a confident, ‘worldly’ young dog.” “But more importantly, their input is integral to the overall development of a dog, which is set to take on one of the most important jobs that a dog can ever be called upon to do, that of an assistance dog, providing safety, companionship, mobility and independence for a child
with autism or seizure-related syndromes or for a veteran suffering PTSD.” Chloe said that Smartpups are special dogs that need special care. “Our puppies must live inside the home (a sleeping crate is supplied) and require lots of socialisation in order to be prepared for their very important life as an assistance dog.” “We have a range of dogs of various ages that are looking
Annual Community Garage Sale returns GARAGE sale lovers will be happy to hear that the Community Garage Sale, held annually at Forest Acres for 24 of the last 26 years, is returning this year. It all began when 26 years ago, local Maree Stansby, invited her close neighbours to join her in a garage sale. Four were held in Koala Crescent with very good attendance and very satisfied hosts. Buoyed by success, Maree continued annually with the event until her family moved away. The community decided that a well-established, well-patronised event was too good to lose, so various locals took it on and the event has continued to grow, attracting 19 homes on

Rotary’s ‘Don’t Bottle it Up’ mental health initiative A new initiative by five local Rotary clubs aims to increase awareness of PTSD and other mental health issues in the community. Rotarians 4 Mental Health is an initiative of the Rotary clubs of Noosa Heads, Noosa Daybreak, Noosa, Cooroy and Eumundi. Their purpose is to encourage people within communities touched by these issues to reach out, speak up and seek assistance. The theme of the initiative is “Don’t Bottle It Up”. This year’s program was launched with an event at the Cooroy RSL hosted by the Rotary Club of Cooroy. Over 100 people attended the event on 16 May to hear a talk by Dr Ben Isbel about how mindfulness can have a positive impact on the ageing mind and dementia. Dr Isbel talked about how mindfulness can make a difference for people touched by PTSD and other mental health issues by bringing about significant and meaningful lifestyle changes. Rotary Club of Cooroy President, David Bell, said they are aware of the ordeal people experience when they, a family member or a close friend, suffer from

mental health concerns. “The session by Dr Ben Isbel was the start of the campaign by five Rotary clubs to make a difference for those touched by mental health issues. We have been buoyed by the extent of support from a host of officials and personalities as we move forward with our ‘Don’t Bottle It Up’ initiative.” The program for 2022 will culminate with a major event during Mental Health Week that brings specialists and
others together to discuss the broad range of ways to support those touched by mental health issues. Rotarians 4 Mental Health has the support of Noosa MP, Sandy Bolton, Noosa Mayor, Clare Stewart and Noosa Council Councillors as well as four of the Noosa Shire football clubs, the Pirates, Lions, Dolphins and Tigers. They have all have joined Rotarians 4 Mental Health to endorse the “Don’t Bottle It Up” message.

Calls to support gymkhana ENTRIES are now open for Cooroy Horse and Pony Club’s Annual Gymkhana with additional calls to raise funds for the event. The Gymkhana is the Club’s feature event of the year where competitors from the region gather to enjoy the family-friendly, fun competition. Over 100 horses and riders will compete in the event on 21 August at the Cooroy Horse and Pony Club on Mary River Road, Cooroy. The Club sincerely appreciates the ongoing support of local businesses, with all major and trophy sponsors now locked-in. “That’s a massive achievement for our event and we are so, so happy to enjoy the generous support of our local business community,” says Club Secretary, Leeona Baxter. The Club now welcomes local businesses wanting
to get involved with prize donations for fundraising raffles and a live auction. “The much-anticipated raffles are always an exciting way to finish the day... Our Club is widely known for our raffles. An enviable reputation which we owe to the many local business people who are happy to contribute to the Club and continue to support our club and its members.” Sponsors and supporters gain public recognition in our community by getting
behind this high-profile, local, volunteer sporting organisation. Branding recognition will be constantly promoted throughout the day via MC commentary, trophy naming rights and business branding on donations. Banners and promotional material are welcome by arrangement. To be involved contact Wes Stephen on 0466 379 269 or Leeona Baxter 0449 787 729 or via email cooroypc@outlook.com
